You are Giles, Master Thief, babysitter extraordinaire, and professional terrible brother.

Your job has taken another interesting turn, as you’ve now gone from the princess’s babysitter to kind-of party guest.

Your kind-of sister strong-armed you into that, as penance for not contacting her in half a decade. It’s not all bad though, as things are still very much going according to plan.

But she does want you to dance with her at the party, if only so that she doesn’t have to do it with some other prick. Even though you hate dancing.

But as much as you might dislike it, even a Devil must dance on a Devil’s whim…

You lug the VERY HEAVY suitcase back up through the ship.

Back on the docks you’re greeted by a giggling Selene cuddling with an incredibly happy Laura, a stoic Marcellus, and a VERY flustered Eleanor.

As soon as she sees you, Selene wiggles out of her sister’s grip and hops over to you. She motions for you to get on her level so she can whisper. “Did you say sorry?” She asks.
“Yyyep.” You reply
“Then why is your face all red?” She asks.
“Because I was not quick enough” You say.
“Is Melissa still mad at you?”
“Probably, but she’s less mad than before.” You say, patting her on the head with your free hand. At least you hope she’s less mad than before…

Selene’s smile lightens the load on your soul, but not the load on your back. Is Melissa making you carry bricks or something?

“Awwww, she’s so cute!” Melissa says, picking up Selene and hugging her.
“I told you she was adorable.” Laura says.
“You didn’t say she was THIS adorable” Melissa says, and then she puts the little princess down and extends her hand. “I’m Melissa Disiera” She says.
“Selene Laustright” Selene says, shaking Melissa’s hand. “Your hair is really pretty.”
Melissa starts gushing about how cute Selene is. Funny, you never remember her being like this. You wonder if she’s being serious, or if this is just a part of whatever façade she’s put up…

“So how does it feel to be back home?” You ask Laura, unwilling to interrupt Melissa. False front or not, she seems to be enjoying herself.
“It feels good. The adventure was nice and all, but it’s nice to come back. I’ve got a few months of little sister hugs and kisses to catch up on, but I’ll have a while yet to make up for lost time.” She says, happily patting Selene’s head as the kid and Melissa talk. “Though I can’t say that I’m looking forward to the discussion that my parents are going to want to have, I still say it was worth it.”

“Yeah, I heard that they weren’t too pleased.” You say. You distinctly remember the Queen having some very unkind things to say when you overheard her talking to Bartholomew…

“What about you? I don’t think you were around when I left.” Laura says.
“I just started a few days ago on a recommendation.” You say.
Laura sighs, sounding very annoyed. “And Mother put Selene in your care, didn’t she?” Laura asks.
“Well yes. Is something wrong?”
“No… nothing to do with you at least…” She says. Sounds like someone isn’t happy that her little sister was left in the hands of a newbie.

Not that you blame her, you could’ve been (and are, technically) a very bad person. Come to think of it, the Queen does seem very dismissive of Selene as a whole…

“But dragon slaying, though. That must’ve been interesting.” You say, very obviously changing the subject.
Selene pulls away from Melissa and looks up at Laura with bright eyes, the prospect of hearing about some of her adventures having drawn her attention.

“Well, yes. It absolutely was.” She says bashfully.
“How big was it?” Selene asks.
Laura leans down to Selene’s eye level and taps her on the nose with a finger. “Big enough to eat a whole house with one big CHOMP.” She accentuates this by chomping, eliciting a happy giggle from Selene.
“How did you manage to off something that big?” You ask. Something big enough to eat a house would require some VERY heavy weapons to take down.

“Why, Princess Laura herself dealt the final blow with her own arrow.” Marcellus says. It seems him and Eleanor are finished with whatever they’re talking about.

Selene gasps. “You killed it with just ONE ARROW?” She asks, her eyes full of wonder.
“Not a normal arrow, an arrow enchanted with a very powerful spell. I would never have managed something like that on my own.” Laura says. Seems almost like she’s trying to downplay her accomplishments.

“Nonsense, all the rest of us did was keep Belgir busy while you worked your magic.” Marcellus says.
“Yes, you should at least try to take some credit Princess. Even if it wasn’t an amazing accomplishment, Tempest Arrow is not a beginner’s enchantment.” Melissa says.

Tempest Arrow… she’s a mage-archer? Where would someone like Laura learn an art like that?

>You do. Mage-archers and other magic users are uncommon, but not unheard of.
>>
“Where did a Princess pick up something like mage-archery?” You ask.
“Oh, my guardian before Marcellus was a mage-archer. He taught me some of the basics and I did much of the rest on my own.” She says.
“And I for one am glad you did, Princess. We would have been in serious trouble many a time had it not been for your skill and foresight.” Marcellus says.

He’s laying it on a bit thick, though it seems that someone has to make this woman take credit for her accomplishments. And he’s right, mage-archery and other arts like it do require a lot of foresight. Enchanting on the fly is difficult, if not impossible at times. Most magic users will keep several objects with more powerful enchantments on them that only stay on for a day, forcing them to re-apply enchantments every morning.

This also means that you have to guess what sort of problems you may have to deal with before the day is through, and enchant your objects (in Laura’s case, arrows) accordingly.

“Oh! Speaking of magic, I got you something Selene.” Laura says, pulling a small necklace out of her pocket and putting it over Selene’s head.

“What is it?” She asks.
“That, my lady, is the head of the arrow that felled Belgrim.” Marcellus says.
Selene smiles excitedly and hugs her big sister. The arrowhead looks completely unusable, like the wind has worn it down to almost nothing, but it still makes a nice gift.

“Oh, there they are.” Melissa says.
As she says this, a carriage pulls up through the crowd.
“I thought that the carriages were all tied up.” Eleanor says.
“The Palace’s carriages are. This is one of mine.” Melissa says.

The six of you make your way into the carriage that Melissa had apparently sent for. Come to think of it… “When did you send for a carriage?” You ask.

“Hah. Like I need to send for one. My employees knew when I would be arriving here, and they sent one for me.” She says, looking more than a little proud.

As the carriage pulls up, a kindly man steps off the front to take Laura’s, Marcellus’s, and Melissa’s luggage so he can put them away. You thank the man, and more importantly your back and shoulders thank the man.

Marcellus steps into the carriage first, and helps Laura in. Then you pass Selene up to him, before stepping in yourself and lending a hand to Melissa and then Eleanor. Once you are all seated, Melissa taps on the window between the cabin and the driver and the carriage takes off.

“So how is business going?” You ask.
“Well enough, That old miser down on Degri Island has been causing trouble as of late. His wobbly allegiances make any trade agreements just as sketchy. But otherwise things are going well, as you can see.” She says.

Melissa talks about different trade deals she’s picked up, as well as her plans to expand her fleet. You listen, mostly out of interest in what she’s been up to. But the others in the carriage appear to have started to talk of other things.

>[1/2]

Problem, OP?
>>
The carriage pulls up to the front gate before long. Which is a good thing because as interesting as catching up with Melissa has been, business has never been an exciting topic.

“We aren’t going inside?” Laura asks.
“No, we get out here. Getting an outside carriage into the palace is more work than it would be worth to save us the walk.” Melissa says.
Well, you assumed that. The guard would have to check the carriage thoroughly, in case someone put hidden panels or other odd things in it. So you all pile out.

“Cedric!” Laura exclaims as soon as she exits the carriage. She then dashes over to the hapless guardsman and almost knocks him over.
Once he regains his footing, he returns her affection. “Welcome back Laura” He says. “Should I send word to the King and Queen?”

Laura relinquishes her grip and visibly shrinks at the mention of her parents. “No, I’ll just go up there myself.” She says.

“Well, I guess I’ll see you later then.” Cedric says.
Laura smiles and waves him goodbye as she and everyone else head on towards the Palace.

“Well, I guess I’ll see you around too.” You say. You’d like to stay and chat, or even get some work done out here, but you aren’t sure if you’re still on babysitting duty still now that Laura is back.

“If you need me, you know where I’ll be… all damn day…” Cedric sighs. He does not seem to like his current position.

You pick up your pace to catch up with the rest of the group, and find that they’ve become somewhat scattered. Laura and Marcellus seem to be discussing something, while Melissa is carrying Selene. Eleanor has fallen to the back of the group, seems like she’s gotten lost in her own head.

Since nobody else mentioned it I should probably add why it's a terrible idea.
While I doubt that Melissa would have a lot of moral issues with us teaching the little duckling how to be a thief, we just told her 10 minutes ago that we basically abondoned her, because we didn't want our hobby to put her in further danger.
>>
Smiling, you sneak up behind Eleanor. She’ll get you back for this, you know she will.

But that’s what makes it fun.

“Thinking about what to name the kids?” You ask Eleanor.
She immediately snaps back to reality, redfaced and stammering. “Th-th-th-that’s not… no. You-“ She stops and stews in her embarrassment.
“I could help you along a bit, you know?” You say, gently placing a hand on her back and smiling like the Devil you are.
“Wh-wha-? No-“ She tries to object all too late, and you give her a good shove. She stumbles forwards until she crashes into Marcellus.

Well, she doesn’t crash. He catches her. Good reflexes on that one. “Oh, Eleanor. Are you alright?” He asks
“Uhhh-… Uhhmm… Y-yes.” Eleanor stutters out. The way she acts all nervous around Marcellus is actually kind of cute, and pretty funny all at once.

As you chuckle, Melissa comes up beside you with Selene. “Into playing matchmaker now, are we?” She asks.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. Eleanor obviously tripped.” You respond.
“What’s a matchmaker?” Selene asks.
Melissa laughs. “It’s a person who works behind the scenes trying to get people who they think would go well together to get together. Like what Giles was just doing there.” She says.
Selene nods in understanding, then wiggles away from Melissa and walks around behind you.

Then she starts trying to push you…

Is she…?

You can hear Selene grunting behind you as she tries her hardest to push you. You decide it’s best to just give in, and you let yourself be pushed.

And then you feel a hand on your back…

You look over just in time to see Melissa looking very content, before you’re shoved forward and sent stumbling much like Eleanor before you.

But you are much better at keeping your feet than she is, and you make quick work righting yourself.
And then your foot catches on something, and all of your work is lost.

Helplessly, you fall directly into Princess Laura…

This could be bad.

Laura looks back just in time to see you fall, but her reflexes are nowhere near as sharp as Marcellus’s are.

The Laura squeals as the two of you go tumbling to the ground. You weren’t able to catch yourself in time, but your instincts do kick in. Instead of simply landing on top of her, you land on your right hand and roll onto your shoulder. You come to a stop a few feet ahead of where you would have fallen, and quickly assess the damage that caused.

Marcellus is already busying himself helping Laura up. Laura looks unhurt. Eleanor looks more than a little guilty, as she should. Melissa is ignoring all of this, and continuing whatever conversation she was having with Selene.

You walk over to Laura and bow your head. “Terribly sorry Princess” You say.
“It’s okay, no harm done. These things happen from time to time.” Laura says.
“Yes, I’m certain it was an accident.” Marcellus says, giving Eleanor a stern look. He probably saw her trip you. “I’m impressed by you dexterity, actually. Though I am curious as to where a servant learned to move like that.” He says, eyeing you suspiciously.

“You can do that too?” Selene asks.
Melissa nods, and Selene attempts to wrangle up another teacher.

“Oh, Giles did you and Melissa grow up together?” Laura asks.
“Yes, we were raised in the same orphanage.” You say, welcoming the change of subject.
“Melissa never mentioned an orphanage. I thought she got her merchanting knack from her parents…” Laura says.
You look back at Melissa to see her reaction to this, and she gives you a look that says ‘don’t you dare talk about that’. You’ll oblige her. It’s not a story you’re particularly fond of either…

“So considering that I’m now a guest, what exactly should I expect at this party?” You ask.
Laura looks at you strangely, then clues in and smiles. “Oh, so Melissa did indeed invite you. Wonderful!” She says, before thinking about what you asked. “Well, the two of you will have to enter together. But you won’t be expected to stay together the whole night. I’m sure that you know Laust’s tradition when it comes to dancing by now. As a servant you’d know most of the etiquette…” She ponders.

“I’d suggest staying out of the way and taking everything anyone says with a grain of salt. The first time I ever went to one of these with the Princess, I wound up challenging three people to duels…” Marcellus says.

“And he won them all!” Eleanor blurts.
“Yes, I did. But it would’ve been better if I had left those slights alone. I’m afraid that I’m no longer very well liked…” Marcellus says
“Well I like you just fine.” Laura says.

“Speaking of dances, have you managed to find a partner?” Melissa asks.
Laura laughs nervously. “I was hoping that maybe cousin Louis would be free at some point in the night, or maybe even Father…”
“I wouldn’t plan on that. Word is that your dad wants to set you up with Sir Roderick” Eleanor says.
Laura visibly cringes at Roderick’s name.

“I could probably help you out with that, or Marcellus-“ You say
“I cannot. It would be improper for me to monopolize my ward’s attention.” He says. Huh, you didn’t think that guardians were forbidden from doing things like that with their wards.

“If you want to get out of spending time with Roderick-“ Melissa says the name like it tastes bad in her mouth “-I would gladly part with Giles for a while.” She says.
“Would you? I mean, if that’s okay-“ Laura says.
“I’m fine with it. It’s the least I can do for knocking you over earlier.” You say.
”Great!” She says. “I’ll most certainly be calling on you then.”

Out of the corner of your eye you see Melissa and Selene high five. Subtle Melissa, very subtle…

After that, it comes time for you all to part ways. Laura and Marcellus have to go see the King and Queen, Eleanor apparently wasn’t given the day off and still has some duties to attend to, and Melissa is going off to find the kitchens with Selene.

“Aww, you missed me so much that you can’t bear to part with me now?” Melissa says jokingly.
“Not you, her. I’ve been appointed with the not-so-official title of royal babysitter.” You say.
“I’m not a baby!” Selene says angrily, and then she pouts.
“No, you’re not. But that doesn’t mean that I’m not a babysitter.” You say, patting her head.

“Sorry about earlier by the way” She says. Her red cheeks stand out quite a bit given how pale she is. You never did figure out how she could stay so pale, especially back in Tulia.

“No harm done, it was all in good fun.” You say. All in good fun until Eleanor joined in. You aren’t sure if you should one up her or stop this little game before one of you ends up getting killed.

That was my plan from the beginning, steal the crown while it rests firmly on the crown princess.

“I’ll… try. Who knows? Maybe I can convince the King and Queen to let me stay on after this is all over.” You say, trying your best to smile genuinely.

Melissa sighs, and you’re pretty sure you know why.

“Really?” Selene asks.
“Really.” You say.

Selene smiles.

When you finally reach the kitchens, you head in and let Debra know that the three of you are looking to eat. Then you all head into the dining room.

Just as Sir Roderick storms out and almost bowls Melissa over the way he did to Selene the other day. Melissa is quick though, and manages to get out of the way in time.

“Hey, watch it!” She says.
Roderick seems pissed about something. “Who in the-, oh. If it isn’t the Lady Melissa, and the servant from yesterday. What, they run out of willing bodies in whoreland?”

Melissa absolutely bristles with anger. This doesn’t seem like the first time she’s come across him, and she definitely hates his guts. She’s usually better at keeping her mask on than this…

“Did you already forget our discussion about teaching children words they shouldn’t know then?” You ask him.

“Nobody asked you, grunt.” He says.
“Perhaps you’re the one who needs to be taught some manners. I’ve only seen you twice and you’ve proven yourself to be a stain on the reputation of Lausts knights.” You say.
“What did you just say to me?” Roderick turns the brunt of his anger towards you.
“Need I repeat myself?” You ask.
“Yes. Then I can have Cassandra write it down so they can read it at your fu-“

“What is the meaning of this?!” An unfamiliar voice shouts from somewhere down the hall.
The voice belongs to a man in his mid-twenties, with short black hair and grey eyes hidden behind a pair of simple glasses. His clothing is simple, almost military in style.
“L-lord Louis, I-“ Roderick begins.
“Prince Louis. I don’t remember the two of us being on such equal standing that you could drop titles as you please.” The apparent prince says. “I’m starting to think that this man may be right. You do need to learn some manners, Sir Roderick.”
“Prince Lo-“
“No, I don’t think I feel like continuing this conversation.” Louis states firmly, his eyes definitely give that feeling of ‘conversation over’.

Roderick looks like he’s about to say something for a moment, but stops himself. Instead he stomps off down the hall.

Prince Louise walks up to you and Melissa “Terribly sorry about that Lady…” He trails off.
“Melissa” Melissa says, her cheeks red.
“I am Prince Louis Harthright. Pleased to make your acquaintance.” He says, turning to you.
“Giles” You say, firmly shaking his hand.
“Louis!” Selene runs out from behind you and jumps on the prince.
“Ah! There’s the little one. Did you miss me?” He says, his demeanor going from ‘serious business’ to ‘happy fun times’ in no time flat.
“Mmhmm!” Selene hums happily.
Prince Louis puts Selene back down and addresses you. “Like I was saying, terribly sorry about that. I’d heard of that man’s temper, but I hadn’t thought it would be that bad.”

“Yes, well. Thank you for your help.” She says, both to Louis and to you.
“No thanks required. Someone apparently has to keep Laust’s knights in check.” He says, laughing in a friendly manner that almost makes you forget the fact that he’s a prince. “But, in the future you may want to hold your tongue in these situations Mr. Giles. Even if he is not allowed to kill you in the Palace, the rules won’t change the fact that you are dead.” He says, back to serious mode.

“Good. Now, I heard Laura is in the castle. You three wouldn’t happen to know where she went, would you?” Louis says.
“She was going to see the King and Queen last time I saw her.” You say.
“Oh no…” His face goes white. “She’ll be needing backup then. I’d rather not see my dear cousin get thrown out so soon after returning.” Prince Louis says, and then he bids you farewell and takes off down the hall.

Melissa takes a deep breath, and lets it out. Then she walks into the dining room.
So she still does that when she wants to calm her nerves, huh?

“He’s… an interesting guy.” You say.

“You certainly seemed to think so.” You say.
“Please don’t. I think I’ve had enough joking around for one day.” She says.
“So I guess he’s your cousin then?” You ask Selene.
“Yeah. Louis is super cool.” She says.

If you recall correctly, Harth and Laust have a very close blood relation right now. The Queens of Laust and Harth are sisters. The previous king and queen had two daughters. The younger sibling was married off to King Julius of Harth, and the elder married Mercutius, who is now king of Laust.

The three of you talk about politics while you await your food. Apparently if King Mercutius wasn’t set on having Roderick on the throne, his best move would be to name Louis the heir of both nations. Which would be a pretty good outcome.

Well… you could sit a dog on the throne and it would make a better outcome than having a twat like Roderick up there…

Lunch passes quietly as well. And things don’t actually pick up until just as you’re leaving, when Laura shows up.

“Uhh… well, you see.” Marcellus begins.

“Yes. Your uncertain answer was good enough for me. But if you’re going to be out on the floor with the Princess, you’ll need something more than a simple ‘I can dance fine’.” She says.

“I actually thought you were going to say no. But I was ready to drag you if that was the case.” She immediately goes to the bag she had you dragging around and starts running through it.

Melissa’s room is about the standard size for suites within the castle. In fact you cleaned several just like this one yesterday. Only this one has two beds instead of one.

“Is someone else staying in here?” You ask.
Melissa looks back at you. “What do you mean?”
“Well, there are two beds. And-“
“Not that. It’s obviously you. You’re my guest after all, why would you still be sleeping in the servant’s quarters.” She says, going back to searching her suitcase.

“Seriously? You want me to sleep in here?” You ask
“I don’t see what the problem is. The three of us used to share a room when we were younger.” She says, now flinging clothing all over the place. “Where the hell is it?” You hear her mutter.
“Well, that was different. We were kids and-“ You stop. And Klaus was there. Every night the three of you would sleep in whatever place you could find. You’d find a nice comfy spot and the two of them would sleep together when they thought you weren't awake.

You never heard them doing… things… But it still felt weird to you.

-this room will be fine.” You finish. You’d rather just accept her offer and get her off of finding out what you just left out.

“Good. Ah! Here it is.” She says. At last, it seems she’s found what she’s looking for. Hang on, you know what that is.
“Wow, I can’t believe you still have that.” You say in genuine disbelief.

Melissa pulls a small wooden bow out of her suitcase. It’s a music box. More specifically, it’s the music box you gave her.

Well… kind of. You had stolen it from a wealthy merchant who was visiting Tulia, only to find that no one wanted to buy the damn thing. When you took your dilemma to Klaus, he suggested you give it to Melissa. It was right around the time that she started living at the orphanage, and she was really down. So you and Klaus made it a gift.

“Of course. I have many like it now, but this one will always be my favourite.” She says, gingerly placing it on a table and winding it up. “I was actually worried that I’d forgotten it for a second there…” She says.

“What, do you bring it everywhere you go?” You ask.
Melissa stands up walks over to you. “Only places that I know are going to be… difficult.” She says, taking her position as the metallic tune starts to play. She then extends a hand to you.

You take up your own position, based on what little you know of dancing. “And just what do you find difficult?” You ask.

“People. Merchant dealings I can do, but lords and ladies and stuff like this gets to me. As I’m sure you’ve gathered.” She says.

The two of you start to move with the music, and you find yourself needing your focus for the first few seconds. But you quickly get into step. Footwork is one of your fortes after all.

“I got that impression, yes.” You say, carefully going through the steps once more as Melissa changes up the dance you’re doing. She’s probably running you through the variations you’re most likely to run into tomorrow night.

“They all have this air of superiority. Like they somehow deserve to be above you, even if they haven’t done anything to earn it.” She says.
“I could see that getting to someone like yourself.”
“And that’s supposed to mean, what exactly?” She says. Wow, she is on a hair trigger today…
“Someone who built their name from almost nothing wouldn’t want to be looked down upon by someone who has had everything handed to them.” You say.
“Oh… sorry again. I guess I’m still a little flustered.” She says.
“Not a problem”
“But you do seem good at this. At least, you’re better than I thought you’d be. You haven’t been doing this in your spare time, have you?” She asks.
“Dancing? Yes, but not this type.” You reply.
Melissa switches it up again, and it takes you a moment to get the new steps. “I figured. You probably still keep knives hidden all over you.” The hand on your shoulder moves back slightly, resting on a spot where you do indeed keep a dagger. “Thought so.” She says with a playful smile.

>[1/2]
>>
As she moves her hand back to where it was, the music box starts to slow down. Figuring that it makes a good time to part, Melissa pulls away.

“Well, at the very least you seem to know what you’re doing. Where you’re at now, you’re reliable enough to not do anything embarrassing with Lady Laura.” She says, closing the music box and putting it back in her suitcase.

“I aim to please.” You say, bowing to Melissa.
“It was nice chatting with you, but you’re dismissed for now. I have some other business to see to before tomorrow.” She says, gathering up the things she threw while she was searching for her music box. “I’ll have your things brought up before tonight, and your outfit for tomorrow should be here before then as well.”

“Do I get a key?” You ask.
Melissa raises an eyebrow. “Do you need a key?”
You laugh. She does know you, after all.

“You want some company?” You ask. Chances are that Eleanor is still busy, and you doubt that Laura has gotten her fill of ‘sister hugs’. And while you do feel bad for Cedric, Melissa does trump him.

“Really? Okay, if you really want. I was just going to head back to my carriage and get Terrence to bring your stuff up here, and then relieve him for the day. If you really want to tag along…” She says.

“Honestly? I’m a little short on better things to do right now.” You say.
“Okay, let’s go then.” Melissa says.

You follow her out the door and down to the main floor. At the very least, her mood seems to have improved. Though you aren’t really sure if you had anything to do with that…

The two of you make your way back out of the Palace and down to the front gate, where Melissa’s carriage is still waiting. In the driver’s seat is a middle-aged man whom you assume is ‘Terrence’.

Melissa tells you to wait there while she goes to talk to him, and you’re met with…

“Hey man, didn’t think I’d see you back here.” Cedric says.
“Oh hey. Still on gate duty I see.” You say.
“Please don’t remind me…” He says.

“Very well Madame, I shall have Mr. Giles’s things brought up to your room.” He says.

“A reputation that is made up. Also she’s my sister.” You say.
“Adopted sister” He says.
“Still a sister” You reply.
Cedric sighs. “You’re being intentionally unhelpful, aren’t you?”
“You never asked for help.” You say.
“What are you guys whispering about.” Melissa chimes in from your other side.

Cedric hops back though, completely flustered.
“Oh. Giles didn’t mention that he had handsome friends. Nice to meet you, I’m Melissa Disiera.” She says.

“Oh, everyone. Probably.” You say.
She slumps over. “Well, at least I have some people who know me well enough not to spread that shit…” She says, picking her shoulders back up. “But I’m free now as well. So I was going up to see how Lady Laura was doing. Feel like tagging along again?” She asks.

“Speaking of kids crying at night, the little princess had a bit of an odd nightmare.” You say.
“Odd how?” She asks.
“It was… I dunno… Specific?” You say.
Melissa gives you a look. “Specific how?
You tell her the about the dream. About how Laura and Marcellus fought off the black things, and then the ‘big guy’ made Selene’s mother watch while he cut off her body.
“Okay, what’s specific about that?”
“Well, the big guy she mentioned had black breath.” You say. “I knew I’d heard about something like that, so I went into the library and looked it up. It’s Rog’s breath.”
“And how is that weird?”
“Selene doesn’t even know that such a thing exists.” You say.
Melissa’s eyes narrow as she gets your meaning. “It’s probably nothing, but I’ll mention it to Laura when I get the chance.” She says.

You hope it’s nothing. As far as prophetic dreams go, that’s about as bad as it gets…

The two of you talk about little else on the rest of the way to Laura’s room, except for the fact that you broke into the library. Melissa clued into that pretty much right away.

When you reach the door to Laura’s room, Melissa knocks twice.

“Who is it?” Marcellus calls out.
“It’s Melissa and Giles” She says.
“Oh! Come in, it’s unlocked.” Laura says.

>[1/2]
>>
“Welcome back.” Marcellus says as you enter.

“Good to be back. I take it you haven’t gotten your fill of hugs yet?” Melissa asks.
Laura and Marcellus are both sitting at chairs on opposite sides of a square table. Sitting in Laura’s lap is Selene, who appears to be taking a nap.

“No such thing~” Laura says, rubbing her cheek against Selene’s head.
Marcellus laughs at his ward’s antics. And even you have to admit, it makes a cute sight.

“Please, take a seat you two.” Marcellus says, motioning towards two empty chairs on the other sides of the table. “We were actually just wondering when one of you would show up.”

“So I take it the talk didn’t go well?” You ask.

Melissa glares at you. Right, like she wasn’t wondering the exact same thing.

Laura laughs nervously, and then hugs Selene more tightly. “No, no it didn’t. It goes without saying that Mother and Father were angry… I knew they would be, but that was the risk I decided to take when I left.” She says.

Melissa puts a hand on Laura’s shoulder.

“They wanted to force me to marry Sir Roderick…” She says.
“What? They want to give their only daughter to that thing?” Melissa stands up and shouts.
“Shhhhh… You’ll wake her.” Laura says.
Melissa freezes, embarrassed by her outburst. “Sorry…” She says, sitting back down.
“You didn’t let me finish. They want to marry me off. But they won’t, not yet.” Laura finishes.
“Why not?” You ask.
“Because Prince Louis forced the king’s hand.” Marcellus says, scratching his head. “I’ve gotta admit, your cousin has more balls than I’ll ever have.”

Apparently just after King Mercutius told Laura his decision, Louis burst in. He basically told the King that their alliance is over if he hands his daughter over to someone like Roderick.

“Do you think he’ll change his mind?” You ask.
Laura sighs. “No… I don’t. But there’s always a chance, right?”

“Mmmm-mmmm… Mommy you’re squeezing.” Selene says, her eyes still closed and her voice still half asleep.
“Mommy’s not here sweetie, it’s just me.” Laura says.
Selene wakes up a little more. “Hi Laura.” She says.
Laura plants a kiss on Selene’s head. “Hi sleepyhead. Did you enjoy your nap?”
“Yes” She says, and then she turns to see that everyone else is here. “Hello.”

You laugh. This is too cute. “Is it possible for anything to be as cute as you two?”
Laura blushes and gets noticeably flustered. “It’s Selene! She intensifies cuteness, see?” Laura holds Selene up in front of your face.

“Breakfast?” Selene asks you.

“Not breakfast.” You say, patting the mostly-awake girl on the head. “But yeah, food.”

After talking about what to do about dinner, you all decide to just have it brought up here. Which meant that you had to go down and let the kitchen staff know. After all, you are still technically a servant here.

You make your way down to the kitchens as quickly as you can, using the pathways that you mapped out.

On the way, you notice that this place is definitely getting more crowded. Nobles of all shapes and sizes litter the halls, discussing whatever it is they discuss in little groups all over. You give them all a wide berth. They probably aren’t all Roderick levels of jerk, but you’d rather not find out by ramming into one of them.

Once you’re at the kitchens, you head inside and see Debra. “Hello.” You say.
“Oh if it isn’t Giles, you lady-killer you.” Debra says.
“I’m not sure what you’re talking about.” You say.
Debra giggles. “Cedric told me aaaaall about your new rooming.”
“I’m sure he did…”
“So, sharing a room with Lady Melissa. You scoundrel, you. How ever am I to break this news to Eleanor. Why, she’ll be absolutely heartbroken!”
“Melissa is my sister.” You say
“Not by blood.”
“Does that really matter?”
“Of course it does! It could make the difference between calling her your sister and calling her-“ Debra leans in close and finishes her sentence in a whisper “-your wife.”
She has a good long laugh at your reaction, and when she’s done teasing you she finally asks what you came for.

You tell her about everyone’s decision to eat in Laura’s room, and ask her to send dinner up there.
Debra makes a note of it, and you get the hell out before she can make any more jokes

You once more navigate the almost-crowded halls to a more secluded area of the castle where you can move more freely.

It seems like there’s a pretty sharp drop-off in the crowds once you get over the third floor, as that’s where most of their rooms (including yours) are.

You’re in a lesser used stairway, making your way up to the top floor when you feel a familiar yet annoying sensation.

You’re starting to get tired of this woman’s interruptions…

“What do you want?” You ask.

Sure enough, you hear Cassandra step out of wherever the fuck it is that she hides.

“Such hostility, and all I came to do was check up on a dear friend.” Cassandra says.
“You and I have very different definitions of what a ‘friend’ is.” You say.
“I actually came to apologize to you for my lord’s behaviour. He does not realize that every person can be worthy of respect. Though I think he will, in time.” She says.

“Is that it?” You ask.
“No, there is one more thing. The girl, her nightmare worries you does it not?” She asks.
“I’m not even going to ask how you know about that, but yes. It does.” You say.

Cassandra turns away from you, her dress flairing out as she does so. Then she looks back at you. “Good.” She says.

And then she walks away, around the corner.

You run after her, but she’s already gone…
Just who the fuck is this woman?

Your mood soured, as it always seems to be after you run into that lady, you head back on your way.
