You are Reinhold Eschenwald, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

One of many issues that you're forced to deal with at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

Alberto's here, your family's here... who knows who else wil turn up before the day's over.

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a magnificent WYVERN!
>Among lesser dragons, Wyverns are ranked third in intelligence, right behind Leviathans.
>Though they can't be domesticated outright, it is still possible to tame them if they're raised from an egg.
>The Princess considers you to be one of her dearest friends!
>But while Wyverns inspire awe in the humans who watch them take flight, they still don't count as people.

"It's not exactly urgent like 'right now,' but I was kind of wanting to ask you about something, Your Majesty..." you mumble.
"Well I'm standing right here," Thierri shrugs, "so go ahead and spit it out."
"Umm, okay,"

After taking a deep breath to calm your nerves, you face the King once again.

"After what happened yesterday, are Granache going to be going to war?" you ask.
"Er, I was actually wondering the same thing," Marianne says. "I wasn't expecting Reinhold to ask, though..."

She glances at you like she's pleasantly surprised.

"Don't worry," Thierri shakes his head, "I'm, not about to send Reinhold back out there to Ancellotta if that's what the two of you were wondering. His job is to look after -you-, not to fight in wars."
"I see," Marianne says with a sigh of relief.
"From an objective standpoint, I probably shouldn't have even let him chase after Leopold yesterday," he says, shrugging, "but as a man, I didn't really have any right to stop him, you know?" he glances at you.
"I guess," you reply with a nervous chuckle.
"I mean, if -I- was in your position, I'd have punched me in the face if I even TRIED to tell me that I wasn't allowed to go rescue my girlfriend,!" he laughs.

Not to say it's unimportant, but I just can't imagine that any sort of 'war' Granache brings against Ancellotta is going to be the conventional grunts-with-boots-on-the-ground sort, so it'd be silly to try and get more details about it before they've really had a chance to think over the specifics.

"That doesn't really answer my question though," you say with a nervous smile.

Not to be pushy, of course.

"Oh..." Thierri sighs, "sorry about that."
"The answer isn't something confidential, is it?" Marianne asks.
"Nah," he shakes his head. "By nature, stuff like that -can't- be confidential."
"I suppose we -would- know rather quickly whether or not soldiers get sent out..."
"Exactly," he says, patting her on the shoulder. "And as for Reinhold's question, my hand's kind of forced in this situation. Their agent kidnapped a member of Granache's royal family as well as a Princess who was under our care from our oldest ally... instigated several attacks on us... -not- doing something would make us seem like pushovers, and open us to further provocations down the line."

>>
>>38822002

"And to everyone who's paying attention, Vincent's rampage in their capital city yesterday served as Granache's declaration of war," Thierri says.
"I can understand how it could be seen as such," Marianne nods.
"Fortunately, we don't actually share any borders with Ancellotta so an all-out invasion isn't a threat to us."
"What about that thing with the Salamanders?" you ask,

Another option is to rip out its ruling class and upper military, and populate it with lesser nobles and military leaders from a mix of the opposing countries. Not ruled by another country yet still secured by them cooperatively.

Even of becoming king isn't a thing that happens in quest, it totally has to be an option in the vn. Although it actually makes most sense in Luci route...

I can picture it now, in forever alone route we're bros with all the awesome nobility yet leave their daughters alone. This makes them trust us more as we're not trying to get an in with them by marrying up. Instead they give us a country.
>>
>>38822510

"Eh, it was a nice change of pace. Feel free to stop by later if you want, maybe I can show you the right way to use a halberd!"
"FATHER!"

"Yup," you nod. "We're going to her uncle's place to pick her up."
"Is Elena gonna be there too?"
"Yes, she will," Marianne replies while taking her hand. "Would you like to come with us?"
"Uh-huh!" she chirps.

It looks like Marianne isn't only good with babies...

You waste no time in heading to the castle gate and finding a carriage to ride you out to Sir Gregory's mansion. While you feel kind of bad about not taking them along with you, this is probably for the better... after all, you'll be coming right back and then you'll have plenty of time to spend with everyone together.

Not to mention a certain announcement that you have yet to make public.

When the carriage comes to a stop, you help the two ladies down and lead the way to the front door. A few seconds after you knock on it, Rana greets you with an apologetic smile.

"Should've known it was you guys..." Rana sighs. "Sorry, but we JUST got done with breakfast."
"Don't worry, we already ate," Marianne replies.
"Oh, well that's a relief," she laughs. "C'mon in."

She's bound to know where everyone else is if they just got done with food, and it's been a while since we've actually talked, so some casual chat on the way might be nice.

And at least

Following Rana along the usual path, she leads you to the living room where you spot pretty much everyone who's currently living here (plus Andreas).

"Guess who's here!" Rana calls out, announcing your arrival. "The hero of the hour and his associates!"

Clapping "politely," Rana steps aside so that the three of you can enter the room. While the others laugh at her theatrics, Marianne just rolls her eyes...

And naturally, Luciana springs from her seat the second she sees you.

"Reinhold, what brings you here so early?" Luciana asks, greeting you with a kiss. "I was going to ride to the castle in a little bit, you know..."
"He's just -that- attached to you," Marianne sighs.

"Well there -is- that," you say with a smirk, "but I also thought that Luciana and Elena might like to know that Alberto's at the castle right now."
"WHAT!?" both Princesses shout in unison.

You can't say that you weren't expecting exactly this reaction...

"Alberto's here1?" Elena gasps, her mouth completely agape. "For real!?"
"This isn't some kind of joke, is it?" Luciana asks, gripping your hands a bit tighter than can be considered pleasant.
"Not at all," Marianne shakes her head. "He's at the castle on business, but he also expressed interest in getting to see his sisters for the first time in over a month while he's here..."
"Inaba!" Elena shouts. "C'mon, we gotta get ready!"
"Ready?" Inaba asks.
"This's gonna be the first time that Alberto sees you like this!"

Elena takes her friend's hand and starts to drag her along with her.

"You need to change into that dress that Marianne bought you yesterday!" Elena says.
"...don't want to," Inaba pouts. "Want to wear this today."
"You wear that EVERY day!"

While Inaba is forcibly pulled upstairs by Elena, Andreas slumps back in his chair.

"I guess this means that I'll be heading back with the Prince," Andreas mumbles.
"Aww..." Guillaume groans. "You never got to show me your sword moves."
"Now now," Ariane ruffles her son's hair, "Andreas is sure to come back to visit once this mess with Ancellotta is over and done with. Isn't that's right?"
"I sure as hell hope so," he says with a weary laugh. "I'd almost forgotten why Gregory's always bragging about how good he has it here."

And with that, the Knight of the Starry Skies heads upstairs to gather his things.

"You're not going to go change too?" Marianne asks Luciana.
"And why would I do that?" Luciana replies. "I'll have you know that I am -always- presentable."

She wraps her arm around you.

"And I'm sure that Reinhold would agree that I'm lovely regardless of what I'm wearing..." she draws her face close to yours. "Isn't that right?"
"Yeah, you sure are," you shrug.

Lovely regardless of what she's wearing... or what she's -not- wearing.

"If Andreas is going to be leaving, I guess one of us ought to go with them to the castle," Reya says.
"Oh yeah," Rana nods. "Might as well report to the Prince too while we're there..."
"Yeah, that's what I was thinking," he replies.
"Since we're both on the same page here," Rana says with a wide grin, "that only leaves the question as to who gets to stay and who gets to go."
"Please no arm wrestling again," Ariane sighs. "I'd like to avoid the risk of any more furniture breaking."

You're not even sure why they'd even pick THAT as a way of settling anything...

"Just get someone else to decide," Bernard says.
"Who, like maybe the Princess?" Rana teases.
"N- no, I didn't say that!" he blurts out. "Just ask Reinhold, I don't think he'd mind!"

Luciana smiles to herself.

That's it for this thread, folks. Sorry that I started so late...

Come back on Friday night for THE [END] OF PRINCESS GUARD.
I'll be running until the end of the in-game day, whenever that may be, regardless of how long it takes. The end is nigh.
I might run a final character epilogue thread, but yeah. The ride is finally coming to an end.

and now I take questions.

I kind of want it to be a short epilogue, like a couple of years into the future at most, leave things semi open ended.
>>
>>38823860
I imagined that the epilogue would be after their adventures and Luci would be pregnant or something.
>>
I honestly want the epilogue to be multi part, first showing the immediate aftermath, then jumping princess adventures with nicolette, Luciana and Reinhold, then married life as pseudoroyal, then finish on children.
>>

As important as it may be, I'm not really interested in writing out an entire wedding ceremony scene.

>>38823831
>It should end with an epilogue of sorts, not with 'just another ordinary day in the life of a bodyguard'

I only follow arch for pgq so I really hope the VN happens.
>>
>>38823894
>As important as it may be, I'm not really interested in writing out an entire wedding ceremony scene.
Agreed. Weddings are long, and much of it is not terribly interesting unless you're actually there.

The lucky couple being all cute on their wedding night after the ceremony would be better as part of the epilogue than the wedding itself, since you could compress anything interesting about the important event into some reflective chatting embedded in character moments.

As a side note, would you consider posting some more of the world building books that Rein was reading? I imagine it'd make a change of pace from VN writing/coding while still ultimately being useful for it, and would probably serve to keep things on people's radars better than just status updates on the core game. Though this being /tg/ I imagine more of us are into the nitty gritty of game construction than most audiences.
>>
>>38823967
I hope so too. Fortunately, the turtle seems stubborn when it comes to writing.

Hell, I'd volunteer to help coding up the content if neccessary; Injecting the tags into a VN script isn't generally difficult, just tedious. The conditional logic is usually fairly straightforward as well, since most VNs lack any recursive components.
>>
>>38824098
I know that if it happens it will take a while
And the most I can do is fund it.
>>
>>38822258
Just so everyone's aware, this would have been the perfect time to ask if he got (read: enjoyed) the halberd Marie got him.

And then when he asks, "What Halberd," we can wallow in Marie's suffering while we explain and then she strangles us.
>>
>>38823753
God speed you glorious turtle!
>>
>>38823753
Thanks for running, Arch.
I can't believe we're so close to the end.
