You don't see any reason not to spend some time with the old man. He is being quite nice to you after all. You expected him to be grouchy and uncooperative, not to just let you in to see the scroll without complaint. Making your way across the room with scroll in hand, you sit down on a small couch next to the old man's chair. The tea pot, seemingly of its own volition, rises into the air and pours itself into a cup, which in turns sets itself down on a small porcelain saucer.

The old man starts to speak, but is interrupted by a mild coughing fit. Once it runs its course, he resumes what he was saying. “Would you like any sugar or honey? I'm afraid I'm all out of milk.”

You don't think you've actually had this particular type of tea before. Tea in Pidjata is usually lighter, with notes of citrus. This tea is nearly solid black. More like coffee than tea, really. “I'll take a spoonful of honey, if you don't mind.”

The old man obliges you, the spoon currently sitting inside the jar of honey rising into the air, its contents somehow not spilling all over the table despite honey's strange ability to get absolutely everywhere. He stirs the spoon into your cup before placing it back in the jar of honey, then floats the saucer into your lap.

You raise the cup to your lips and take a hesitant sip, surprised to find that the tea isn't particularly bitter. Rather it taste like mint, with a hint of some sort of berry you can't quite put your finger on. It's surprisingly pleasant. You savor the drink until the old man's voice interrupts your thoughts. “Now then, tell me about yourself. What drives you this far north? The only one of your kind I've ever seen that was not a merchant is the Archmagos and he was cast out. Oh, and I suppose that girl as well. I forget her name.”

The Shahzadi, you assume. You shrug your shoulders. “I was cast out as well, for slandering the son of the Shah. However, that son has since become the Shah and I managed to save his life after he was poisoned by assassins. He unbanished me as a reward for my services. At least, he's going to unbanish me. He hasn't done so yet, but he has granted me the right to move about freely in Pidjata. Anyway, I've come this far north because during my Banishment I traveled these lands and I have a number of friends and acquaintances in this city. I'm primarily here to collect on my share of the profits from a business endeavor I started with one such friend.”

The old man nods sagely, although that's not really saying much. Everything he does seems sagely. “In the North, where I come from, we think of your people almost as a myth. The strange dark skinned inhabitants of the southern deserts. Each of them a mage. We tell stories of your crystal spires and magical wonders, of your infighting and madness. Some call you demons in mortal skin. Truthfully, I have found your kind no better or worse than any others. Merely taller.”

You're not really sure what that has to do with what you've said, but you suppose it's interesting if nothing else. Your people don't really tell stories of northern humans. To you, humans are just humans. There's little difference between one group and another. At least in terms of appearance. Their cultures can vary wildly.

The old man continues speaking before you have a chance to respond. “Why do you wish to learn the Vys metamagic? It is a powerful spell, not to be trifled with. Misuse can lead to the death of not only the victim, but the caster as well.”

You take a sip from your cup whilst considering your response. “I wish to learn it because it is a powerful spell which will improve my understanding of magic. I am quite capable as a Vatis. I've trained for more than a decade to do what I do. I'm already a Grandmaster in one element and a Master of another at only twenty six years of age. I have seen worlds beyond our own and traveled far and wide. Quite simply, I am competent enough to handle myself.”

The old man laughs softly, shaking his head. “I don't doubt it, child. I never meant to cause offense. Merely a warning. I have seen too many good men and women driven to an early grave due to unchecked ambition. Regardless, feel free to read and enjoy your tea. Thank you for satisfying an old man's curiosity.”

You wonder just how old this man is. You can assume that he's human, but you're not sure if he's a hundred, two hundred, or perhaps even three hundred. You don't know what the upper limit truly is for a human Grandmaster. “Is there anything I can do for you by way of repayment? Any aches or pains you'd like healed? I've Grandmastered Water Magic, and I'm specialized in healing. If I can't fix it, nobody can.”

The old man waves a hand dismissively, a coughing fit striking before he has a chance to speak. Once it subsides, he speaks a little clearer than he had been previously. “No, no. It's fine. I've consigned myself to this body of mine. I don't imagine I'm much longer for this world. That's the way I prefer it, though. Best to die in your sleep, peacefully, when the alternative is madness.”

You're not sure if you would agree, but then again it's not like you really have a choice. You can't choose to die of old age. Regardless, you leave the man be and focus your attention on the scroll. Reading from the top, you find the language initially hard to read. It's in an older dialect of Rhynian than you're used to. Some spellings are weird, words that you'd usually see combined are instead written separately, grammar is strange. You manage, but it's more difficult than usual.

Apparently the Vys metamagic allows one to manipulate not only the Vys they possess, but the ambient vys and the vys stored in all living things as well. When used on a human, it allows the caster to control them almost like one would a puppet. They can, of course, resist this manipulation. However, it's quite difficult to do so without also knowing the Vys metamagic.

It has other uses as well, more mundane uses. It can be used to cast spells using someone else's reserves, or even ambient vys. According to the report, some Vatis have managed to use it with the Destroy effect to turn a being into a nonmagical entity, without any vys reserves. Doing so essentially destroys their identity, and might kill them if done carelessly. This can of course be reversed with the Create Vys spell, which has its own set of dangers to take into account. Apparently only the greatest of Vatis can use the Vys metamagic, as it's so costly to use.

The Vys metamagic was apparently poorly explored at the time that this scroll was originally written. Few had actually investigated its uses because it was thought that Enchanting was the school better suited for the manipulation of vys itself. Regardless, some posited that the Vys metamagic might have some interesting effects if combined with Metal magic, or perhaps Nature. It was apparently well known that one might erode the vys reserves of another by using Earth magic in conjunction with this meta.

As far as actually learning the effect goes, it seems more a process of overcoming previous misconceptions rather than learning any new techniques. The scroll instructs you to 'attempt to cast a spell without a target'. To you, that just seems like you'd be bleeding vys into your surroundings. The scroll recommends finding a quiet, isolated location devoid of distraction to meditate in. The writer, whoever they were, reports that many found greater success after first disassociating themselves from their physical forms in meditation. It all seems surprisingly simple, for a meta so rare.

You gently roll up the scroll, sliding it back into its wooden tube and bowing your head just slightly towards the old man. “Thank you, for both the tea and the opportunity to read the scroll.”

He waves you off. “Don't mention it, the company was a welcome change. You can just leave the scroll on my desk, I've been studying the text over these last few days looking for clues as to what the Vys metamagic might do when used simultaneously with the poison effect. Unfortunately that scroll is incredibly lacking when it comes to details.”

Alright. I think this scroll is genuine. If what Varvar said about vys is correct, and I'm inclined to believe him, this lines up with both how Vys is a byproduct of the soul and how having no distractions/separating from physicality (via void meditation) makes it easier to learn metas.

Simply, I think varvar's stuff backs this up.

You use a manipulate spell to imitate the feat Grandmaster Albrecht performed earlier, refilling your teacup. You're surprised that it's still hot, after you've been sitting here chatting and reading for what must nearly be an hour now. Perhaps the pot is enchanted? It wouldn't surprise you. Regardless you try a sip of the tea without honey and find that it does have a bit of a bitter aftertaste to it after all that the honey had obscured. You decide to stir in a spoonful after all.

Once you've gotten yourself situated, you send the wooden tube containing the Vys scroll flying across the room with a flick of your wrist. It lands gently on top of the pile of books which covers the old man's desk. “I'm in no hurry, really. I was hoping I might learn a little bit more about you, Grandmaster Albrecht. Where you come from, what it's like to be a human Vatis, how your research is going, so on and so forth.”

The old man takes a moment to straighten himself in his chair, a coughing fit seizing him. Once it subsides, he clears his throat before speaking. “Well, I suppose I wouldn't mind obliging a young man a story or two. I've always been interested in foreign cultures, after all. I suppose I cannot be alone in my interest.” He takes his pipe out of his mouth for the first time since you met him, cupping it by the bowl whilst mumbling to himself.

“I suppose I ought to start with my homeland. I come from a city called Grossefestung. I know that name will sound odd to you. It does to other humans as well. My people were never assimilated by the Rhynians and we maintained our own language throughout the course of their hegemony. When the Empire fell, my people united to retake the lands that were once theirs, the northeastern corner of Heimat, what most seem to call the Rhynian Mainland or simply Rhynia. We have ourselves a pleasant little kingdom in the far northern reaches, though raids from Voibardians are a frequent problem.”

“Ah, right. Voibardians. They've become something of a problem here as well from what I've heard. They're a vicious little race. They used to control a vast empire, stretching across much of what is now the eastern half of Heimat and Karge. Sorry, Karge is what we call this continent we're on now. Anyway, the Voibardians were driven underground by the Rhynians and more or less fortified themselves in the farthest north, but lately they've been raiding more and more frequently.”

“They possess strength which one would not typically expect of creatures their size, and some have horns as long as a man's forearm. The length of the horns is said to indicate their magical potential. Incidentally, they perform magic quite differently than you or I do. Where as ours is focused on affecting the world around us, theirs is focused on enhancing their own natural attributes. Often they will tattoo themselves, the tattoos serving as a focus for casting their spells.”

“Anyway, I've gone off on a tangent. My people are constantly threatened by the Voibardians but we trounce them every time we clash. It is only unfortunate that my people do not look kindly upon Vatis. You see, we have a limit on the number of people allowed to train at our version of this Academy we're sitting in. No more than thirty students a year. I was not accepted, and so was to be cast out into the waste. I was only fortunate that my father could afford to pay a ship to take me south.”

He places his pipe in his mouth, sucking at the wooden stem briefly before exhaling a cloud of harsh smoke. “I spent my youth as an adventurer. I was not a very good mage, but I was powerful and the Successor Kingdoms are always in need of powerful mercenaries to fight their wars. After years of fighting in battle after battle, I grew tired of the mercenary life and resumed my wanderings."

"Eventually I happened upon this Academy here and settled down. Truthfully, my life story is not all that remarkable. That was... oh, perhaps a hundred and fifty years back. I'm two hundred and three years old, now.”

You're a little taken aback, he's incredibly ancient by human standards. Perhaps one of the oldest of their race to ever live. “You have lived a rich life, and a long life as well. A rare combination among humans, I find.”

The old man chuckles softly, exhaling another cloud of smoke. It burns your lungs just to be near the man, but it would seem incredibly rude to ask him to stop. “I suppose so, I suppose so. As for my research... well, it progresses. I find that poisoned vys is difficult to control. It loses its coherency, or destroys itself, or begins to expand exponentially. I've been trying to devise some way to contain vys, but it does not seem constrained to physical limitations. It flows through walls just as readily as air. Regardless, I doubt I will make a breakthrough before I pass on. I've been preparing to pass my notes on to one of my apprentices, a bright lad. I have high hopes for his future.”

You can't help but ask the obvious question. “How can you be so at peace with your own death? I could not imagine being so calm if I were to die at only two hundred years of age. Especially considering I've met people of my race five or six times that in age.”

Grandmaster Albrecht shrugs his shoulders. “It is something you learn to live with as a human. We have a saying: There are only two things certain in this life, death and taxes. While I may not be particularly fond of either, I recognize their necessity and would rather live with them than without them.”

The concept of desiring mortality is entirely foreign to you. Sure you suppose committing honorable suicide when you grow too insane to function in society isn't exactly everyone's idea of a good end, but it only comes after many centuries of life on this Earth.”

You finish your tea whilst chatting about largely inconsequential things. You learn a little more about the city the old man was born in, and about his family. Apparently his father was a 'Ritter', some sort of small time landed noble responsible for defending a stretch of land from raiders. After you finish your tea you finally excuse yourself and make your way out of the room, thanking the old man for his time and his kindness.

After you've shut the door, you start to make your way down the hall towards the staircase in the central atrium, all the while debating where you ought to go next.
