Despite complaints, despite your scatter-brained-ness extending to leaving highly venomous friends sleeping beneath other friends' pillows-
You finished off dinner with a smile, and a smattering of new goals.

The smile being largely due to the sheer amount of food you managed to eat.
Despite the attempts of one thieving snake- which in your endless patience, you have somehow managed to forgive- or, perhaps, in denial of her attempts, you quite likely demolished the guild's stores of meat.
Truly a feat worthy of song.

Afterwards, you hauled several snoozing monsters back to your sister's freshly built house. She was kind enough to provide you with a wide variety of blankets, and you wasted no time in laying yourself in a sea of silk and closing your eyes.

And now, it's morning.

Sunlight glittering through the windows gives it away.
It also informs you that you have slept far past your normal time to wake. Whether that's a remnant of the sluggishness your wounds have imparted, or just the slow repair of your sleeping habits after a night of combat, you aren't sure.
You're not overly concerned, anyway.

Your friends are in similar straights, lazily spread across your blanket fortress. Jin is immovable, as always. Sheszka tried lying across the 'nose' of your skull for a change, and apparently rolled down it till she got caught in the nostrils.
You're not certain how her back bends like that, or what kind of magic is involved in keeping a tongue that size in her mouth.
Ezzy opted into some sort of hibernation test, bundling away beneath your skull.

And Nin has wiggled free of her blanket cocoon, spreading her wings wide, allowing you to appreciate the almost golden tones of her patterns.

You settle down a moment, and give yourself time to check on your friend.

It doesn't look like her height has changed much, if at all.
The rest of her, though-

Her fluff has expanded again. You can't see her neck for the thick scarf of downy fluff wrapping it. Her wings look... stronger, for lack of a better term. Less papery, more like felt? It's not really something you can draw comparisons to. Not easily, anyway.

The brown and beige patterns she sprouted before have fade, and in their place is a shimmering golden tracery. It runs all across her wings, outlining the shapes of her past pattern. Even her antennae are flecked with gold.

Still pale enough to pass for a ghost, though.

You turn your attention back to yourself, leaving the moth to her rest.
Gods, she snores like a saw.

Your chitin is duller still, even compared to yesterday. The cracks are widening. And it seems... thicker? Like you've got mitts on.
That's a good analogy. There's sensation, but it's like you're touching things through your chitin. And before, the sensation was right there at the surface.
And you still feel slow, to boot.

You know that Mom told you that this is normal. That you'd be better in a few days. But this is just- It's irritating. Not being able to do what you could before is sending that 'be active!' itch straight up your spine.

You hope you heal before you snap.

Nin is starting to stir awake. And Sheszka, bless her soul, has once again rolled over- this time straight off your back and into the blanket sea, where she has started to thrash around as she tries to wake up all at once.

Does Lyra know IC about moulting? Has it been explained off screen?

You might want to have Spidermom suddenly remember to mention it, because she's going to freak the fuck out if her chitin starts splitting open without explanation.
>>
>>38769217
We probably already know because of the whole reincarnation thing. Most people know snakes and crabs molt, shouldn't be too big a leap to figure out why we're falling apart.

Any idea what the hell we're meant to do with a shed carapace?

What do you do with something that looks like the corpse of an Arachne that had the human half eaten?

Do we bury it? Or..... ?
>>
>>38769596
We nail eyes to it, put it on a spring, and use it to scare people walking by.
>>
>>38769596

Use our magic to reinforce it with steel.

Turn it into a shield for Lyra.

If it does not just come apart.
>>
>>38769596
Does it retain its sturdiness and durability? If so, for how long?

Could we make a table out of it?
>>
>>38769671
Pretty sure it'd make a good harpy, moth and wolf bed then.
>>
>>38769596
>implying our "elf" half won't also molt.
We are 50% renegade elf, 50% reincarnated human, and 100% giant spider
>>
>>38769733
Our elf parts don't moult. This has been confirmed by QM. Our exoskeleton heals by moulting, the fleshy parts just heal like a normal elf.
>>
>>38769777
Well, that's bullshit.
Elf-moult would have been ideal.
>>
>>38769777
So we really do have elf fangs.
>>
>>38769722
We ARE a Harpy, Moth and Wolf bed.

Also Snake and sometimes half Elf.

We don't need to carry around something for that.
>>
>>38769845
Mom is not part Elf and she has fangs though.
>>
>>38769991
shhhhh

Also, I'm sort of dissapointed we won't have the thickening of carapace over the eyes. Nothing better than the ol' whiteye for shedding.
>>
>>38770014
That would make us briefly blind and helpless, and universally sucks for animals that shed... We can't even meaningfully communicate with reptiles and we know it fucking sucks for them.
>>
>>38770164
Well, yeah, it would suck.
It would also be cool.
>>
Nin will wake up all her own. And then you can get her.
Diabolical schemes parade through your labyrinthine mind like spiders, and you pluck one out to set the stage and you have completely lost control of this metaphor.
You're going to pull a prank on Nin, is what you're trying to say.

For the time being, though, you need to help your neighbourhood wolf, who has undeniably proven that she should never be allowed anywhere near actual webs, ever.
And she's compounding it by the fact that she still hasn't stopped flailing.

You pick yourself up, stepping carefully as you turn. And then you just as carefully push down on your packmate, pinning her to the floor till she stops squirming.
"Lyra?" She manages to wheeze out.
Maybe a little too much pressure.

"Good morning, yes?"
"What? What happened?"
You start to pick at the blankets as you answer, turning the wolf this way and that as you search for an end to her silk prison.
"You have somehow trapped yourself in blankets."
"Why?"

You sigh, and start to unravel her cocoon.
"Because your response to being beneath blankets was to struggle, yes?"
"If you're trapped, you fight."
"This is a different sort of trap."
"Okay."
>>
>>38770179
I question your definition of cool. Just sounds like a massive pain in the spider-ass.

I'm glad it's not something we have to deal with.
>>
>>38770206
You unwind the last of the five separate blankets. How many did Elle make? In what, a day? Two?
Your sister is some sort of wizard.
A different sort of wizard than your other sister who is a mage and not a wizard because there are some sort of lines drawn in the sand between mages and wizards?
You use a spear.

With one friend free, you turn back to the other, just now examining her arms and wings.
And as soon as she spots you looking, she flares them out- They're actually beautiful like that, the light filtering softly through them, the gold almost glowing.
"Well? What do you think?"
"I do not know any golden moths, yes? Have you seen my friend? Small, brown and white, very fluffy. She is a moth too. Answers to Nin?"

There is a moment of silence as Sheszka stretches next to you, standing at your side. She glances between the two of you. Nin looks vaguely peeved.
You have acquired a twitch in your leftmost top eye, and have pursed your lips to prevent laughter.

You can do this, Lyra.

Poor centaur... he likely came to civilization our of fear and lives in eternal terror of the spider locals...

Also I've come to the conclusion that the non existent inspiration for this quest must be as terrible as everyone says after seeing the goblin evo chart. seriously, I could understand goblins becoming orcs, I could sort've see them becoming ogres... but vampires and minotaurs are a step TOO fucking far... seriously, vampirism is usually a whole other process entirely, and minotaurs don't even physiologically make sense to be related to goblins...

>I wonder how close he's going to stick to some of the stuff from.... The Thing That Shall Not Be Named?
Not at fucking all. The only thing taken is the evo system and reincarnation starter, that's it. The actual monster setting is wholecloth new.

There may be goblins at some point because they're a staple in fantasy, but the turbo-sue MC is not going to appear, ever.

You somehow force yourself to frown, broken as it is.
Tapping idly on one arm- which makes a whole lot of crackling noises and very little tapping- you start talking to 'yourself'.

"Hmmm. Maybe she went ahead, yes? Trying to find food for herself before the day starts."
You nod to your wolf, ignoring the incredulous look plastered across Nin's face.
"We will head to the guild. Maybe she will meet us there?"

Sheszka, for her part, just looks confused. Nin looks halfway to worrying and all the way to irritated.
You smile.
And hold out a hand.

"You can join us, if you like. I do not mind. You are much quieter than-"

Nin reaches her limit before you, throwing herself at your head with a yell.
It's too late. You've already won, already started to cackle as she tries something approaching a headlock.
"You- You!"

Your chest is heaving as you try to keep enough air moving as you laugh ever harder. Each peal finishes with a chorus of clicks, completely out of control. You start to reach for her, but she's scrambling around your shoulders, one leg over an arm, both hands wrapped around your head. Her wings flare out, starting to flap above all of you.

"I'll get you! Spider!"
The fact that she's trying to wrench your head around and accomplishing next to nothing is doing very little to help you contain your mirth.

Of course, that's when the first wave of dust hits you.

You snort and spit and sneeze, trying to clear it as you grab at the furry little rat on your head.
"Blagh! Cheater! You cheater!"

Sheszka retreats, covering her nose and mouth as you start to buck , waking Jin with a squawk.
"I'll teach you!"

___________________________________________
>>
>>38771566

It takes another hour and a half before you head out for breakfast.
You pried the moth off your head before the dust set in, but you were laughing too hard to avoid inhaling it.
You wound up paralyzed, Nin trapped in a cage of your arms as you laid on the floor, limbs twitching haplessly every once in a while.

Jin was similarly stuck behind you, though you imagine she didn't mind awfully much.
Sheszka stood around hopelessly for a few minutes, then curled up next to you again and went to sleep.

And now you're eating.
And arguing.
But the food is the important thing.

Nin is glowering from across the table. Sheszka is still mostly confused.
Which is sort of making the whole situation more amusing, but not particularly defusing it.

"It was Nin all along, Lyra. She grew!"
Nin growls.
"I see, yes. You are very-"
She points a quivering finger at you, her face still red.

Honestly, if we want to drive her up a wall, we just need to mold some rock or metal armor on her. A day wandering around on the ground for every time she annoys us would work.

Or... you know, we could be reasonable, or maybe legitimately clever with our pranks. Seriously, if I wanted to prank Nin, I'd wait until she was knocked out before stealing some of Elle's dyes and making a butterfly
>>
>>38772525
>making a butterfly

This is just evil... I like it. But evil so we better dont do this.
>>
>>38772525
Dying her is probably a bit too far. That could easily end in tears.

The metal armor grounding thing is also a bit cruel.

Those are both over the line.
>>
>>38772663
Dying her would be fine... dying her with elles dyes would not be... we'd want something water soluble, and maybe it'd be easier to just paste a dyed cloth layer over her wings. It'd come off relatively easier too.
>>
>>38772663
Yeah, these things are a bit too far.
And all the extreme pranks are coming from the same ellipses guy that was so into meeting the goblins
>>
>>38772701
Dye of any kind could really fuck up her pretty wings. Don't be a dick man.
>>
>>38772736

How bout we have elle make a butterfly type night gown or pjs and change her into it one night.
>>
Dress her up as a fairy when she's asleep maybe?

You stop eating for a moment, drawing the attention of everyone sitting at the table with you.
You shift your weight to an elbow, leaning forwards as the table creaks beneath you.

"Do not worry, yes? The red cheeks go very well with the white fluff. It is very cute."

She clams up immediately, her cheeks turning even redder- this time from blush rather than exertion.
Ducking her head, she flips her bangs to the fore and does her best to hide behind them, leafy greens vanishing into that dim space.
"That's not fair."

You lean back onto your shell, and the table groans it's approval.
"Dust is not fair, yes?"
She snorts, a lock of hair flicking forwards with the puff of air.
"Forgetting me is not allowed."
"I could not forget you, yes. You would never let me."

She catches her chin with an empty palm at the comment, burying further into her scarf.
There's a few murmurs from beneath her hair. It sounds like 'Not fair, not fair.'

You grin again.
"So!"
"Nnn?"
"Yes?"
"What kinds of changes, yes? Do you know?"

"I have not changed. Yet."
"Not you, Jin."
"Oh?"
"Nin changed, yes?"

The harpy leans around you for a better look, head cocked ninety degrees sideways.
You know she's an owl, but sometimes it's creepy.
"You are gold now."
"Yes."

She nods to herself- still sideways- and slides back into place, ruffling her feathers as she settles.
You glance between them with a smile, settling on the moth.
"You got more than just beautiful colours, yes? Though, I think it would almost be enough."

She sits straight upright, still blushing, lips pursed.
You'll probably pay for that later.

>Well?
>Finish up breakfast while she talks. You can probably empty the table.
>Make some light travel plans, maybe. You've got a snake and a moth to take care of.
>Other (?)

This works.

That works. Just put a zipper on the back so she needs help getting out of it.

It's weird how much we are able to eat, when you think about our size.

We're not actually that big, compared to the things we eat.

We need to give nin a chance to say goodbye and see if ezzy needs anything special for hibernation or can outright skip it.

YES! Have Elle make a butterfly costume and dress her up while she sleeps.
>>
>>38772854

But get mom's blessing first. Or maybe see if she'll come with?
>>
>>38773038
In theory she can outright skip it with only slightly lethargic activity... might not be too healthy for her long term... although I'm pretty sure thats the kind of thing that takes multiple years to actually fuck you over with, and the actual health issues were all relevant to tortoise health and there obscene calcium requirement so its not necessarily as bad for a snake.
>>
>>38773038
That's more than light travel, but I do completely agree that these two need to visit their homes once more.

huh... I wonder if the healing dust could be used as a supplement to keep kidney health going well... its the kind of thing that would either make them function perfectly or shut them down in high dosage...

Hey REQM, what WOULD happen if you took daily dosages of healing dust as a supplement?
>>

>Finish up breakfast while she talks. You can probably empty the table.

You've gotta prepare to actually eat it.
And it doesn't taste the best.

Generally, it would keep you healthier. Drinking potions when youre already fine doesn't do much

>>Finish up breakfast while she talks. You can probably empty the table.

>>38773483
Monstergirls dying from exhaustion
>>
>>38773488
Huh... that'd be a way to handle any of the several long term health issues that COULD potentially occur from not hibernating... its definitely viable for ezzy...
>>
>>38773521
Probably not too big of a concern. The setting is magical and evolutions probably change the physiology of the monsters affected by them.

Give her one or two more evolutions and she'll be safe from side affects of missing hibernation. She'll just never be safe from tail rubs / headpats as long as Lyra's around.
>>
>>38773639
eh, I'm just speaking from the purely biological perspective (lel), which, arguably in a high magic setting is the WORST case scenario as it is the one where things that should go wrong from excessive mildly poor decision making do go wrong. You know, things like forgetting to sleep regularly, forgetting to eat a balanced diet, forgetting to actually bring oranges with you, and other mistakes all lead to horrific deaths from easily avoidable conditions.

The chance of a QM doing this is near 0%, but the fact is with our knowledge, even this is preventable in the case she starts showing signs of any of these issues, were in good shape I'd say.
>>
>>38772854
Man, you have to think about this from Nin's point of view here. There's a good reason she's crushing hard on Lyra, and now Lyra is being a massive tease.

Not that it isn't 100% warranted, but still. Very cute.
>>
>>38773737
You know we are pretty sure about how mom would react to a boy, but what about a girl? Then like everything else we let her squirm and then start laughing
>>
>>38772462
Oh my god that little bugger is so fucking cute it hurts.

You make to get more food into your mouth when Lann cuts in.

"What's it like?"
"Huh?"
"Your change thing. What's it like? You wake up one morning bigger and stronger."

You shake your head.
"Just stronger, I think."
Nin kicks you under the table.

You chuckle, and she turns back to Lann.
"I don't know."
"You don't know?"

She switches back to all of you, looking to each in turn.
"Noone remembers changing. There's a voice, and when you wake up-"
She shrugs.
"There's nothing."

Lann raises an eyebrow, leaning forwards so she can glance at all of your friends.
"So you don't remember anything? No feelings of stretching or warmth or anything?"
You shake your head.
Jin and Sheszka chime in all at once, voices mixing overtop each other.

"I remember a whisper-"
"Someone said Moon."

"Moon? That's it?"
The wolf shrugs. Jin's wings tilt in a gesture of helplessness.

The half-elf looks to you, and you wave away her curiosity with an empty hand.
"I woke up with a skull one day. Do not look to me, yes?"
She laughs, and you gesture back to Nin.

"You have still not told us if you can do anything new, yes."

She's cleared her plat, perching her head overtop it with a pyramid of her hands.
She shrugs.
"I'm not sure yet. I think dust? My wings feel- uh- tingly? I don't know."
>>
>>38774053
You reach for your plate, nodding.
It's empty.

You push it away with a sigh, and look around the table.
Sheszka is still eating, taking it slowly and savouring her food. Nin is finished. Lann is working at it.
And you think Ezzy only eats every other day or something.

As for Jin, you felt someone take a plate away from back there, so she's probably done.

You relax for the moment, just resting on your skull as you wait.
The caravan is soon. You want to visit Nin's village before you go. You should definitely hit Ezzy's home, if only to check in about what she needs to do to continue living. And saying your goodbyes, and you should talk to Dad more about his family. And maybe learn some elvish? You could even bug Lann right now, couldn't you. Wait, does she even speak it?

Maybe you could just....
>>
>>38774076
huh... whats the chance all of ezzys village is basically comatose right now? I mean they're further north than us and ezzys already lapsing into inactivity.
>>
>>38774076
We need to
A. let our friends say goodbye to their families
B. say goodbye to our own family
C. find out the exact date of the re-union festival every year so we can come back on it
and
D. get dad to make letters for his family so we can deliver them

most of them are much larger than ezzy and stay underground though, and size keeps in heat.
They'll probably sleep later than her.

see you thursday! thanks for running
>>

They're getting ready, eating extra and bringing more material underground.
Ezzy is lazy.

>>38774161

>>
>>38774174
So any reason for that weird twitter convo between you and lamb?

Any confirmation or denial into whether or not smokey the bear is also canon in this quest?
>>
>>38774076
>Maybe you could just....

We need to have our armour upgraded with spider silk padding as well.

So much to do....
>>
>>38774190
Not really. I'm a bit under the weather with a headache at the moment, but I hadn't thought it was showing in my writing.
Apparently people can read these sorts of things? It's a bit interesting!

I will likely not feature smokey the bear, haha!

>>38774196
You've already got spider silk beneath the armour. Did you want something more?
>>
>>38774053
Really taking that advice on board, REQM. It's much easier to tell who is speaking now. Nice work.
>>
>>38774174
Does moulted chitin retain its strength or become really fragile after a while? Could we turn this into furniture?

It'd be pretty funny if you ended up giving the town "Genuine spider furniture" as a reminder that you were there.
>>
>>38774271
>Did you want something more?
It might help to produce some armour that's light enough for Sheszka, Jin, and Nin.

Especially the fliers would profit from spider silk as I'd imagine it should be pretty effective against projectiles.

Maybe the smith could even come up with something to improve Lyra's armour as well.
>>
>>38774271
I've been editting people's writing for years, I tend to notice pretty minor changes in their writing style.

Also, no wolf birthday?
>>
>>38774336
Also lamb, do you intend to end your quest on the grounds that there is no way in hell you will be able to beat the quality and win of yesterdays thread?

>>
Hue here, I'm still terrified of all of you insane people...

>>38774281
It's not as tough as it was, and it gets pretty warped by the process of shedding it.
It's usually possible to boil it to soften it, but who knows if that will work with yours.

>>38774324
I'll keep it in mind. Bring it up next thread- Weaving isn't your specialty by any means, but it's something you could do without strain.

>>38774336
That's pretty cool.
I'll mark it down. Remind me when we start up, and we'll see where we can fit it in.

Well, there's always Elle for the complicated stuff.

do you really think if I could write for shit I'd be writing smut, my writing skills are so poor I can only write painfully shallow deaths of characters in a quest. Often relying on deus ec machina to actually kill them.
