You are Reinhold Eschenwald, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

One of many issues that you're forced to deal with at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

Your grandmother's sword is in tow, and Marianne's holding the books that you bought to help teach Carina how to read. Now all that's left is for them to actually get here...

...but at least you have Alberto here to keep the two of you company while you wait.

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a magnificent WYVERN!
>Among lesser dragons, Wyverns are ranked third in intelligence, right behind Leviathans.
>Though they can't be domesticated outright, it is still possible to tame them if they're raised from an egg.
>The Princess considers you to be one of her dearest friends!
>But while Wyverns inspire awe in the humans who watch them take flight, they still don't count as people.

"So what brings the two of you to wander the castle halls on so fine a day?" Alberto asks.
"I'm letting Reinhold take the lead today," Marianne replies, "since it's the least I can do to thank him for everything he did yesterday."
"Yes, that..." the Prince places a hand to his temples. "I myself need to figure out what I can do for him in return for saving my little sister," he says, patting you on the shoulder.
"Thanks," you say, smiling awkwardly. "But you really don't have to do anything..."
"Nonsense," he shakes his head. "Archmage Sucher is going to be handsomely rewarded for his assistance in this matter, any doubt of Takamaru being knighted after this is gone... the only question is how to properly thank you and Sir Monique for your efforts.

Since Alberto neglected to mention Inaba, it's likely that Monique was told to omit that information from his report.

Since he's likely to end up seeing her before he heads back home to Marconetti, you decide to leave Inaba's ascension as a secret for now.

"Knowing Luciana, she probably already has something in mind," Marianne says with a slightly annoyed look on her face.
"Hm?" you turn to her.
"I'm sure you'll find out whenever we next see her," the Princess replies. "But first, I believe you wanted to see your grandmother?"
"Oh yeah," you nod. "I guess we're all going in the same direction, huh."
"More or less," Alberto laughs.

With that, Albert joins you in walking to the castle's main gate in anticipation of your family's arrival.

It really anoys me how little sense this makes. Why would she have a crying a aheago face when showing someone that she's pregnant? It's probably useful to get some insight into how this will all be received in Marconetti, beyond Celestino having a minor meltdown over these many and varied shadowruns he failed to detect.

We do need to make sure we're present for Alberto's initial meeting with Inaba as well, because it will be wonderful.

Inaba's gonna hug the shit out of Alberto and it's gonna be cute
>>
>>38759837
It's strange either way. I'm not sure what the legality is regarding adopting somebody on behalf of your dead grandson but if it's stipulated that Agnes can't do that and had to adopt Rein and Citrine herself, that makes them Volker's Uncle and Aunt.
>>
>>38759974
>Implying anything with Inaba isn't cute

"What a day..." Alberto says with a long sigh as he leans against the wall.
"Something wrong?" you ask. "Besides the obvious, I mean."

Imminent war and all that is sure to have him stressed out.

"It's nothing -wrong-," Alberto replies, "Just... surprising, I guess."
"Something to do with Karel?" Marianne asks.
"First I find out that she's actually a girl, and then a few minutes later I learn that she's actually your uncle's daughter," he says with a weary laugh, "...and then Emilio declares that they're a couple and kisses her right in front of me."
"Ah, that," she nods.
"I guess Giancarlo can't call him a wimp anymore..."

>[1/?]
>>
>>38760014
I suspect that in this case the legality is They'll Damn Well Be My Grandchildren Unless Celestino Wants A Very Severe Talking To.
>>
>>38760053
I'm half convinced Agnes will talk Vinny into making a contract with her so she's be spry enough to enjoy a extra decade or two with her new family and chasing after all the new kids. Plus it'd let her teach Elena and Carina how to be the best Swordies of the next generation.

Tl;dr - yeah, Agnes seems the type to drive kingdom policy with her little chats with Celestino.
>>
>>38760035
"It's like, as soon as she revealed herself to be a girl, all the masculinity she was feigning jumped straight into Emilio. All of it."

"You're not angry?" Marianne asks.
"I was for a few seconds, but then I remembered all the reasons why Karel would have wanted to keep that under wraps," Alberto replies. "Living in Marconetti all her life, there's no way she hasn't heard stories about how my father became King..."
"Yes, that was the first thing she brought up when asked why she kept her parentage a secret from us."
"How do you think your father'll take it?" you ask.
"Oh, I'm sure he'll be livid," he replies. "The entire system that we have in place regarding bodyguards was to keep this very thing from happening, after all.
"Yeah..."
"But I'm sure he'll change his mind VERY quickly once he realizes that Karel was a Princess of Granache all this time," he laughs.

>[2/?]
>>
>>38760226
>"And it was a good thing after all."

Even then, sometimes being Karel is suffering.
>>
>>38760295
It's kind of bittersweet when you account for the fact that if not for her sudden Princess Ex Machina, their story would likely have ended with "And the star-crossed lovers were separated immediately and/or they fled, breaking Celestino's heart into even smaller pieces and everyone lived miserably ever after."

"...you -do- realize that Karel doesn't have any actual claim to the throne, right?" Marianne asks. "My uncle gave up his place in the line of succession when he decided to run off and be an adventurer."
"Of course," Alberto replies. "But while my father is sure to find it a shame that the Princess that Emilio won over wasn't the one that he was hoping for," he says, winking at her, "it's still a chance to even further strengthen the bonds between our two countries."
"I suppose so," Marianne nods. "Though I do hope that your father won't end up entertaining any strange ideas."
"Eh, he's too old for that," Alberto shakes his head. "You don't have to w-"

Alberto stops speaking when he notices something off in the distance.

"Looks like the long-awaited guests have arrived," he says.

Eagerly, you lead Marianne outside and find yourself meeting the carriage just as it's pulling through the gate. And practically the moment it comes to a stop, a certain someone comes leaping out.

"Reinhold!" Carina chirps as she races right for you.

Having prepared yourself for the little girl's flying tackle hug, you're able to take on the full brunt of it without even being forced a single step backwards.

"Nice to see that you haven't forgotten me." you laugh. "Are you guys doing alright today?"
"Uh-huh!" Carina says with a big smile on her face as you set her back on the ground. "I helped Marius make breakfast 'cuz Citrine was throwing up and it didn't really taste too good but it was still fun!"

"Now Carina," Marianne says in a motherly tone of voice, "your grandmother just got her sword back, don't you think that she'd like to hold onto it for at least a little while?"
"...yeah..." Carina bows her head. "...sorry, I shouldn't be selfish."
"Oh no, I wasn't scolding you!"

She's starting to get nervous.

"I just wanted to say that you can have your own things to play with, Carina!" Marianne says as she holds out the books that she'd been carrying.
"Huh?"

"...it's books?" Carina tilts her head. "But I can't read."
"I know," Marianne replies, "but Reinhold bought these so that Citrine and Marius and maybe even Reinhold himself could help you to learn."
"He did!?" she gasps.
"How sweet of you, Reinhold!" Citrine says, seemingly having recovered from her carriage sickness.
"Yeah," you shrug. "But Marianne's the one who picked them out."
"Heh, I'd forgotten your soft spot for little kids," Alberto laughs.
"Yes, well..." she mumbles.

Deciding that maybe out here by the gate isn't the best place to be conversing, your little group retreats into the hallways of the castle before resuming.

"This one right here..." Marianne holds up a book with rabbits on its cover.
"Ooh, that's a bunny!" Carina gasps. "Like Inaba!"
"Elena's rabbit?" Alberto asks.
"Uh-huh!" she nods. "She's really cute and really nice!" she says with a beaming smile.

Her cheerfulness is infectious.

"But, um..." Carina peers at Alberto's face. "Who're you?"

And then he realizes that he's talking to a little girl so he stows the formal act.

"I'm Alberto," he says, with a tired smile. "I'm the Crown Prince of Marconetti, and my father is friends with Agnes there," he says, pointing to your grandmother.
"He is?" Carina raises her eyebrows.
"That's Luciana's big brother," Marius clarifies.
"Oh!" she claps her hands together. "So that's why you have the same color hair!"

"I'm Carina Eschenwald!" Carina chirps.
"Carina... -Eschenwald-?" Alberto squints.
"That's right," Agnes nods. "I've taken her in and she'll be returning to Marconetti with me once Citrine's baby is born."
"...I see..." he scratches his head. "I guess I'll have to tell Father about that when I get back."
"Please do."

You can't really blame him for being confused here.

"AHEM," Marianne clears her throat. "Now that the introductions are done with, I still haven't explained these books..."
"Oh yeah," Carina nods.

Looks like she was really eager to do so.

"This one with the bunnies is about numbers," Marianne says. "And this one with the tigers is about letters."

As the others prepare to part ways with you, you turn to Marianne.

"Want to go and see if your father's still busy with letter writing?" you ask.
"If that's what you want to do," Marianne replies.
"I suppose we'll meet up later, then," Agnes says.
"Sounds good," you say. "We can have lunch or something."
"Umm, can I go with you guys?" Carina asks.
"Carina, you really shouldn't..." Citrine sighs.
"It's okay," Marianne shakes her head. "I don't know how interesting she'll find our wandering around to be, but she's free to come along if she likes."
"Yay!"

And so, having gained a new hanger-on, the three of you make your way to the King's office. As you've never had any reason to go there before, Marianne leads the way.

You can't help but notice the increased servant activity as you walk along.

"Father?" Marianne calls out as she peeks inside a cracked door. "Are you busy?"
"Marianne?" Thierri's voice shouts back. "What're you doing over here?"

The sound of heavy footsteps inside the room grows increasingly louder until you find the King standing right before you. Naturally, you greet him as respectfully as possible.

"Something wrong, Marianne?" Thierri asks.
"Not at all," Marianne shakes her head. "I'm only here because Reinhold wanted to see you."

Emilio doesn't know, and he's not the type to really pry. The only thing he knows is that Reinhold is from Cateno and that Cateno is a shitty place.

I'm relatively confident that two or three dudes is not "everyone". I'd have been just as happy streamlining this end run somewhat rather than doing the whole last-hurrah SoL shebang, but concluding it without SOME kind of denouement would have been silly.

>>38762875
>The "what do?" choices have never been good for the quest
This has been my feeling on the matter for basically forever, since I feel like things might've felt a lot smoother if most of the "talk about ___ as you walk?" prompts and their ilk had been automated somewhat.

Regardless, thanks for running, as always.
>>
>>38762889
Probably because there have been a few anons who have been EXTREMELY vocal in how much they've hated these past few threads while there hasn't been much voiced sentiment to the contraty.
>>
>>38762947
It's simpler that way. If your overall enjoyment exceeds your dislike, choose "yes". If not, choose "no".
>>
>>38762949
I've been rereading the archives and it's interesting how the early threads seem sets of choices rather than the open ended statements that have been the norm for a while.

I wonder if you can pinpoint when the quest shifted to the other style.
>>
>>38762949
>but concluding it without SOME kind of denouement would have been silly.
I don't think anyone wanted it to just end but this has been a whole lot of nothing

>talk about ___ as you walk
Man I hated those so fucking much, every time one would show up I wanted to punch something.
>>
>>38762949
I've voiced my opinion on the "Talk about?" options before, but they really add nothing of value. Just include tidbits from thread-chatter if there's something people want to ask about, but else just insert some random talking or skip to whatever destination we're going to.
>>
>>38762933
See, Arch? Don't worry about the players hating you, it's only a vocal minority.
>>
*taking notes just in case I run a quest some day*

Structure good. Freeform bad. Always have something precise for the player to do.
>>
>>38763005
But if it's too structured, players will feel railroaded and lose interest. Best to include options/suggestions, but always encourage write-ins.
>>
>>38763002
I don't hate arch (Though I'll admit my comment before was a little harsh)

I like the SoL stuff but this all has been aimless and disorganized, we went to see the king, why, what the hell for?
>>
>>38763033
Options shouldn't just include an action, but also a reason.
>>
>>38762723
Ask about any changes or dangers we should be aware of due to the coming war.

If he doesn't look too busy, talk some about Adrien, and how we still kinda want to strangle him for leaving Citrine in Cateno.
