In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium there is only war. Imperium of Man, once strong and proud, now is slowly crumbling, whole regions of space are lost to the horrors that lurk in the darkness of the void. Sector Deus is just one of the thousands of Imperial provinces that form the front line in the war to defend Humanity itself. Corruption from within and aggression from without threaten it. But the Emperor sends us hope. High Lords of Terra commissioned a Chapter of Adeptus Astartes, finest warriors Humanity has ever seen, to defend this region of space. They are the last line of defence that hold Age of Ruin at bay. They are the Ghosts of Retribution and this is their tale.

The Wise Ones enter the cave.

There are only three of them, but they are unlike any Gnar you've seen before. They are elderly, their fur is greyish and their skin is scared. You have no idea what Gnar lifespan is, but they are clearly old. However the strangest thing about them is what they bring with them. One of the elders wears a crudely made amulet on his neck. Other one has something looks like a bag, full of various small tools, probably used for stonecrafting. Third one is carrying a huge bow made of a young tree and has a patch on his right eye.

Gnar are widely considered to be nothing more than wild beasts by majority of Mormarkians. You fought them when you first arrived to this Sector more than three decades ago. They were brutal and cunning, but they looked more like monsters than sentient beings capable of crafting and using tools.

Harmantos stands up and approaches them with a jar full of honey in his hands. He growls. After a moment of silence, the Wise Ones growl back. A conversation begins.

(Roll Logic -10 if you wish to understand)

After a few minutes of grunting and a few roars, Harmantos turns to his brothers and with a look of ecstasy on his face proclaims:
>Wise ones are pleased by the gifts we brought them! They thank us and they offer us to go on a Dreamwalk with them!

Wild cheers erupt from the Ice Wraiths.

>Please, Sergeants, arrange your Squads and send one representative each to go with us to experience the Dreamlands. As always, only the most deserving members of our warrior lodge will be granted the privilege!

As you traveled here with Sergeant Grison's squad, you are automatically included in his Squad and find yourself in another voting session. After a quick debate, two candidates appear to be in favour.

Kastus voices his opinion:
>Grison is our Sergeant and our Brother. He went on a Dreamwalk for two times and each time he returned stronger and more determined. We need our leader to be strong and I cast my vote in his favour.

However Arden has a different offer.
>I vote for the Chapter Master. He is the guest of our lodge and guest in our Squad. He was the one who urged the whole Squad to wait for me when I fell down the cliff. He has never been on a Dreamwalk, I vote to grant him the honour!

Do you agree with being nominated or do you pass and hold onto your original decision not to participate in the ritual?

Harmantos smiles warmly when he sees you among the marines who stepped forward to go on a Dreamwalk.
>Please, Brothers, follow me.
He leads your group, a total of 9 marines, including Harmantos, into a separate cave. Unlike the previous cave, this one is warm and there is a spring running through it. As you step into it you realise that it's coming from the depths of the earth, that's the reason for it's warmth. One of the Wise Ones is waiting for you here. He motions towards a pile of animal furs, which you use to make beds for yourselves. Harmantos warns you:

>The Trip might last for days, depending on what paths you shall take, make yourself comfortable. Be ready for an intense mental experience... The hike through the mountains was just a formality. This is the real Trek.

As you lay down on your bed of furs, the Wise One approaches you and grunts, extending you a crudely made stone bowl, full of some kind of blueish moss and weird bright red berries. Harmantos explains:

>You will have to eat both of these together. Space Marine metabolism is very strong, but when consumed together, these have a kick worthy of a Basilisk. In order to weaken our immune system we also cut our veins open and Apothecary Krayvir shall apply serum to stop our wounds from closing until we fall into trance. Then he will patch us up. After you are in the Dreamland, don't fall back. First trip can be disorientating. Are you sure you want to do this?

You manage to enter the Dreamlands without any trouble even without wounding yourself through sheer force of will.

>51
At first you are strongly disorientated and you are not sure where exactly you are, it seems as if this is some kind of forest and everything around you seems to be covered in a green mist... You notice a group of lights appearing deeper int he forest, you can't make them out, but one of them is especially bright and somehow you realise, that it must be Harmantos.

>20
You feel quite confident about your abilities and despite what Ice Wraiths think, this is not the first time that you venture into the realms of Limbo. You feel that this... "Dreamland" is different from the realms you visited before, but it is similar. There is power here, real power, but you are not sure what's the nature of it yet. There are shadows among the trees that seem like doors, doors that lead to answers you seek. -Warpsmith trait activates-

What shall you do next? Try to reach Harmantos and his group? Follow them in secret? Go find answers to the questions that bother you..?

-If you wish to make your own path, think of a single thought (up to 10 words) and roll d100-

>Chapter Master! We thought you didn't make it because your body was too immune to the ingredients... Glad to see you are with us! We are making the Trek to meet with the Mormark... It is not far, but the road is tricky, let us stay together!

The spirit-marines follow Harmantos' lead. You are traveling on what appears to be an often used forest path and the journey is easy. However as time goes by you notice that you have seen that same tree before... And that stone... And that bush! You ask Harmantos:
>Brother, do you think we are travelling in circles?
He looks at you with a serious face:
>Yes, I know that. It always happens. Some of us have doubts. But soon we will move on. They are coming.
You are not sure what he has in mind.

Shadows come from the shadows. They are formless and it hurts to try to comprehend them. They charge your group, attacking your brothers. When they are attacking, some of them turns into horrible beasts, others become human, turning into mothers, siblings or friends. They spirit your brothers away, monsters drag them into the forest, while "good doubts" simply make them disappear. Even Harmantos is attacked by something, but you are unsure what...

>>38754475
Only you remain untouched. Nothing approaches you, until... A shape appears from the shadows, dressed in full Imperial uniform. And you recognise him. Larion Ursus stands in front of you, looking straight at your very soul. Harmantos and the forest suddenly disappear. You are in a crowded hall. You recognise it. The Halls of Justice on Tachion Primaris. The faceless crowd is screaming and shouting, it barely held in place by a thin line of Arbites. Between the two of you a guillotine stands. Ursus speaks:
>Well, boy? Whose execution is this? Is it me, whose head will roll, or yours? Are you sure that I am the heretic you think me to be? Will you put whole Sector, possibly whole Segmentum, at risk just to justify your paranoia? You know that I am that single bolt which is keeping this Sektor together... And you are no Saint to judge me, your sins are just as numerous, if not greater, than mine. But you are blind to your own heresies... So what shall it be?

"You're right, I have no place to execute you over crimes for which I have no evidence. The crime of questionable parentage perhaps, but heresy? No. Mark my words though, I shall find the truth, and on that day none but the Emperor himself could stop the vengeance that will descend upon you. 'Hold this sector together'? Ha! Under you this Sector has grown idle and weak so you can maintain your veneer of stability to the High Lords who tolerate your existence!

On all sides the enemies of mankind gather.Chaos Warbands roving the sector unchecked by all but my own Chapter. The pirates of Tartarus, free to ravage Imperial shipping with any attempt of a return strike 'mysteriously' terminated. And the Styrians in Mortis, treacherous dogs and heretics that YOU allowed to secede, abandoning the loyal Imperials that remain there in the process. Even now they intend to strike back upon Deus, and you do nothing, perhaps something worse than nothing...

You know I was gone for several years, but you do not know why. Well I have gazed into the abyss, and seen the face of the true heretic. The lust for power, the unflagging certainty of their own benevolence, and the arrogance to think they alone can control the fate of mankind. I destroyed that heresy, but I return to find it lingering amongst my own home. One way or another Ursus, Sector Deus shall be freed of it's taint and become great once more."

>Who was it? I don't think that your doubts were based in fear... No, not someone like you. Father? Mother? Siblings? Love? For me, it's always my little brother. I am the leader of the lodge and I always go on the Trek. More than twenty times, but it's a single doubt i could never forget. When they took us from the underhive, back on Terra, I promised him that I will come back and take care of him. I never did. By the Emperor, I know that I did the right thing and my existence now has a meaning, but the doubt lingers on... Others have fell. They must be back to the cave, disorientated, possibly vomiting, or maybe in ecstasy. But they failed the journey. It will be only the two of us who will make the journey this time. Let us move on.

The rest of your journey is easy, the road is safe and clear. Soon, you leave the woods and find yourselves at the foot of a gigantic icy mountain. Thunder rumbles somewhere around it's peak. You feel that this mountain is the epicenter of the power you felt earlier... Then the rumbling becomes more coherent.

>Little-life. Thoughts. Many patterns. Speak.

Harmantos kneels and shouts out.

>We have come to pay our respects, oh Mormark. May the Spirit of the World live till the stars burn out. Please, accept our praise, oh Lord, we seek your guidance.

He turns to you:

>Congratulations, Chapter Master. You have made the Trek. Your reward - audience with the spirit entity of Mormark, World Spirit itself. Now you know whom the Ice Wraiths truly worship. >Manyfold. Orphan you made will threaten your blood-life before the listening one comes back. Those who carry the plague are preparing a medicine that will make the dead walk. The mushrooms will grow on the tree world later. Vision of you killing many little-lives because of these things. Danger.

You feel that your questions have changed the way you will react to some things and threads of Fate have moved, dreamlands are becoming unstable. You have two more questions you may ask, before your audience will come to an abrupt end... What are they? (if you posted, please link and confirm)

"I am looking for one called Silencus. He is a keeper of forbidden knowledge, lost to his brethren. I wish to find him, can you aid me in the search?

>The blood-branches you speak of are existing on the world you call Solstreim, they hide in the shadow of the throne. If you save their lives, many others will perish, but some others will survive.

The silent one left his sons on his own will. They know, they lie. He follows in the footsteps of the one you have slain, believing old lies. He believes that Terra must burn in order for Humanity to live. He is seeking cure that does not exist. At this moment he is descending to the world you know as Ophelia VII.

The Dreamlands are starting to crumble around you and your return back to your body in the cave. Harmantos approaches you and extends his hand, helping you to stand up.
>So, Chapter Master, I hope you now realise what our lodge is about? Please, cease to ask us questions and we shall serve you faithfully.

Is there anything else to do or should we timeskip until you return to the Tombstone?
>>
>>38757446
I'm good, timeskip back to the tombstone.

Ask if it would be possible to utilize the gnars and or other creatures on Mormork as beast of war.

>So, Chapter Master, I hope you now realise what our lodge is about? Please, cease to ask us questions and we shall serve you faithfully.
I agree on the condition that you return to Tombstone and before the chaplains renew your vows to the Emperor. Furthermore I expect a report from you personally to me after every activity you undertake such as this trip into the mountains. If you accept then there are no further impediments.
>>
>>38757446
Damn, and i had so many questions fine let!s return
"You have lied to Harmantos, ever since the day we found you again in those caves with broken armor.
However, you have also served me, the chapter, and the Emperor faithfully since that day. You and all your brethren. As long as it remains so, it is fine"

*you have lied to ME Harmantos
sorry typo

>Possibly yes, Wise Ones would probably help us to tame their less intelligent brethren. However the real challenge will be making Mormarkians see this as a good thing, they've hate Gnarrs for as long as Mormarkians existed... Also such tactics would be VERY unorthodox.

>>38757567
>Emperor was a great man, and I still serve him, but unlike the World Spirit, he was no god. However out of respect for you, I will take the vows again, Chapter Master. You will be welcome to join any of our activities as well, however I will have to ask you to lift your invisible "blockade" of initiates to the IInd Company. We are not Soulkillers, we are trying to have a dialogue with you. But IInd Company is ours and we need more men to function properly on the battlefield.

>>38757615
>I knew that it was too soon to let the truth be known. My loyalty to you or to the Imperium never wavered.

New year! And shall we finish here for today or you have any replies to Harmantos?
>>
>>38757735
My loyalty to you or to the Imperium never wavered.
I know brother. It is good to have you. I know I promised to be prudent, but have you found out anything about the humans slaves taken? The Wise Ones dont seem like someone who would ask for blood sacrifice.
>>
>>38757828
The first line is indicator what I am responding to if it isnt obvious
>>
>>38757735
There was no blockade brother I assure you, I was simply obeying the wishes you conveyed yourself*.

Oookay back to the drawing board then

>Possibly, however it was a long time ago. IInd company needs to take its rightful place in the battle line of the Chapter and we can't do that with 50% strength!

>>38757828
>I assure you that to my knowledge no servants of the Emperor were hurt by the hands of the Ice Wraiths. However if that rumour still bothers you, I will look into it.

Thank you for playing, next session - next Monday!
