Markel cheers in jubilation as you hand him the cash. "Don't worry, friend! I will get you your T-62! Come back here in two days and your Leopard will be repaired!"
"You know which T-62 you're looking for, right?" you ask him.
"Oh, ah, haha, nein, you will have to tell me. Is there any identifying marks?"
You shake your head with a smile. Markel gets way too excitable sometimes. "It has 'Cherepkha' written on the side in Cyrrillic. Hard to miss."
"Certainly, certainly friend! I will find you and bring you your tank! Count on Markel!"
You take his hand and shake it. "Thanks Markel. We'll see you in a couple days then."
"Don't worry about a thing, haha!" He waves as you walk away with your two friends.

"He's certainly interesting," says Pearl. "The THO has its own engineers and mechanics, so I've never met the one in town before."
"What have you done, exactly?" you ask Pearl.
"Well, I've only been in a wiesel. And I've only been to Frankfurt and here. I was born in Frankfurt, and then when I joined the THO, I came here. I've actually only been here a few months, actually."
"Huh," you say.

20mm. Recon variant.

The Weasle is usually fitted with AT missiles if I remember correctly, but we don't have one so we shouldn't be concerned about it.

Our tank however is a Leopard 1 so we have a 105 mm gun and a co-axil machine gun so all is good in the hood

No, it's not.
We don't have a cute Wiesel to scout ahead and cover our flank.

Can we at least get a 20mm cannon installed in a sub-turret in lieu of a pintle-mount?
>>
>>38709988
We should really get Pearl a new Wiesel.

"Hey, let's go get a drink before we continue. You ever been to the New York?"
"No, I haven't I'm not much of a drinker, and my crew took me to the Maustrap whenever we did go out."
"The Maustrap?" you ask as you lead them towards the New York. "I haven't been to that one. Still new to this whole business. Funnily enough, I was considering going there to look for people for crew." You turn to Susan. "If I had, I wouldn't have met you, huh?"
"Of course not," Susan replies. "America! Fuck yeah! No way I wouldn't go to the American Bar, I'm American through and through!"

The walk to the New York is short, with the miniaturised Statue of Liberty greeting you out front. You've only seen pictures, but according to all the stories of the oldest folks before they passed away, it's a perfect replica. You wonder what happened to the original. The door jingles as you enter, the sun just beginning to set.
"Hey Jack!" You call out, waving. "We're taking a booth." Jack nods back, turning towards the kitchen and getting his son to start the kitchens up. Seems your group is one of the first ones in, but it's a friday, and you know the crowds can get pretty big.
You pick a booth in the back, your favourite, with the girls sitting across from you.
Jack comes over almost immediately, a notepad in hand and with little menus. You don't bother to look, ordering your regular, to which Jack just nods and jots it down. Susan takes a little bit longer, ordering a steak and the local beer. Pearl takes the longest, but she eventually orders a small steak with salad, and a lemonade. Jack writes it all down, then heads back into the kitchen.
People have begun to stream in.

Urge to start the next sentence with: "Hömma, Perle!", rising.
Two words that will fill a German with visions of greasy coal miners in their 50s doing a bad job at talking up girls. "Perle" is German for pearl and when used to address a woman amounts to "tart" with a more positive intention but still insulting to the addressed.

"So, I'm American, Susan's American, what about you, Pearl?"
"Huh? Who, me?" Pearl asks.
"Yeah, you. You're American, right? With a name like 'Pearl' it's hard to imagine otherwise."
"I'm part American," Pearl says. "My father is American and my mother is English-German. They met in Frankfurt, fell in love, got married and had me. Nothing special about that."
"Nothing special indeed. So your father is diaspora?"
Pearl nods her head. "My mother is too. Her great grandfather was BAOR. Didn't want to go home after the Great War, though unlike my father's ancestors he still could. So my family settled in West Germany."
You scratch your chin, and you drinks arrive. You pop your beer open and take a swig before you talk.
"About the same with my family," you say, thinking back to the stories your mother told you, and your grandparents before they passed away. "Both sides of my family are diaspora. From around here actually. They settled down, found wives, had kids. Most of the family moved to Frankfurt or Bonn, rather than stay out here. My gradfather was a tanker, though, and my father after him, and now me. Fulda has strong links with my family, way back to the War, so it's not like we can leave it."
>>
You look over at Susan. "Your turn," you say with a smile.
She huffs a bit. "Well apart from being American, I don't actually know. Dad was a bandit of American descent out in the wastelands, and Mom wasn't much. She had a hard time taking care of me before she passed away, so I never really got to find out."
"Hmm," you mumble around your bottle, taking another drink. "My parents are gone now too. Mum passed away a couple years ago, and dad went missing in the last war."
"Sucks," Susan says. "Such is life on the front, though."
The two of you look into your drinks for a while, considering things. When you look up again, Pearl has a dark look on her face.
"Whoa, sorry," you say. "We're supposed to be here to get our minds OFF of this shit."

"So, Susan, what's it like in Dresden? Me and Pearl, we're just a couple of kids from around here. We don't know what it's like on the real frontier." You give her a meaningful look, and hope she gets the hint: no more sad shit.
"Oh, yeah, it's actually pretty great," she says. "It's dangerous, obviously, and full of thugs, bandits and Russians," she pokes her tongue out at the last bit. "But behind the grime there's a real shining core. Apart from a few assholes, everyone tries to get along, and it works out. And not to mention the tanks!" Her eyes light up at this. "You think you've seen stuff here? Megatron? The Turtle? Babies. I've gotten to work on tanks you wouldn't be able to imagine. I've seen an Abrams. I see Leopards 2s. I see the Polish Winged Hussars and their space tanks."
"You ever seen the Rex Immortalis?" you ask.
"No? Have you?"
You grin around your beer.
"Hey, hey, what's that supposed to mean, huh?"
You just lean back, smug taking over you.
Pearl giggles. You let a genuine smile take over your face. Mission accomplished.

That's when the food arrives.
The girls get theirs first, a pair of steaks, Susan's the larger. Then Jack places 'The Usual' in front of you. A giant god damn hamburger, just the way you like it. You thank Jack as he goes to attend his other patrons. You see that the bar has filled up a bit now, with a few faces your recognised. It's not a large bar, so even with the small amount of people that are here it still feels rather cozy.
You dig into your burger, far too busy to talk, while Susan and Pearl look on in astonishment. The girls get to their own food, and three of you chat about other stuff. You find out a bit more about Pearl's life before the THO, and things Susan has done in Dresden.
>>
Later on, you've all finished your food. You're on your third beer, Susan on her second, and you've convinced Pearl to have one as well. It's gotten pretty late at that point, but you're interrupted by a loud raucous outside. You crane your necks to look. A parade of people, mostly in tank uniform, are marching in the street, uphill towards the rest of the bars.
"Bandits ain't got shit on us!" someone yells, to cheers from the rest of them. They continue walking.
"I recognise some of them," Pearl says. "Tankers from the 11th ACR, the Megatron crew, and a few others. I think I saw Cate with them as well."
"Good eyes," you say.

It's probably the strike force from the counter-attack returning home. If you know those guys, they're probably heading for the Maustrap.

You knock back the rest of your beer, and Susan does hers as well. Pearl's is about 3/4 done but she looks at it hesitantly, so you grab it and finish it off yourself.
"We're following them," you say to Pearl.
"O-okay," she says as she hops out of her seat. You pay for the three of you out of your own funds, and then the rest of you trot out to meet the group. There's tankers patting each other on the back, and much laughter and retelling of stories. You catch up with them, following a short ways behind them, searching for someone you recognise. Unfortunately, you're still new at this, and you don't see anyone you know. It's not until the group makes a turn for the Maustrap that someone is recognised, and not by you but by Pearl.

"Cate! Cate!" Pearl calls out, but her high voice can't be heard over the roar of the crowd, and they all pile into the Maustrap. All told, it's much bigger than the New York, with two storeys just for the bar. An old turret is mounted up next to the entrance, from a Panzer VIII Maus, with the name of the bar painted in white letters across the side. The crowd streams in, with a big man nodding at them as they went. The last of the crowd enters, leaving you and a bunch of onlookers outside. You make to enter, but the big man stops you.
"Whoa, whoa, tankers only. Let's see some ID."
Susan pulls hers out in a flash, seemingly having hers on hand for occasions just like this. You need to fiddle around in your wallet for it, but produce it just fine. The two of you turn back to Pearl. She's on the edge of tears.
"I-I left mine at the barracks," she whimpers. "I didn't think I'd need it tonight. Guys, I'm so sorry!"
"Hey, hey it's fine, Pearl," Susan says, coming up and holding her. "There's no need to get upset."
"S-sorry," Pearl half-sobs. "It's just, it's been a long day."

"Hey, Pearl, calm down. I'll get your ID for you."
"Really?" she asks.
"Yeah," you tell her. "Where did you leave it?"
"Uh, I think it was on my bedside table. Mine is the room on the left. Oh, wait!" She hands you a set of keys. "D-don't forget these."
"Okay, got it," you tell her. You jog off into the night, working off the alcohol by the time you make it to the barracks. You unlock the door to her barracks and step into the dark room. Nothing's changed since you left, a good sign. You head into the room on the left, and find the ID card easily, sitting by one of the beds. You pocket it and head out again, closing and locking the door on your way out.

You jog back to the Maustrap, the cool night air and your tanker's uniform keeping you from sweating too hard. When you arrive, though, the girls are nowhere to be found. You walk up to the bouncer.
"Hey," you say. "Where'd the girls go? I got the ID."
"Inside already," he says. "The Captain recognised the short one, brought her inside. Said they had big news."
Big news? "Thanks," you tell the bouncer. He lets you through, keeping an eye on the street.
You walk into the bar, to the noises of celebrations and laughter. Tankers are all around you, clinking tankards and having a good time after a hard day. It seems like there was a big party going on. You recognise the Freeman Freelancers sitting in a corner, keeping to themselves. You recognise a few other faces; the especially loud man with a british accent and a truly ridiculous moustache you assume to be the commander of the Megatron.
>>
But in the centre of the room, surrounded by cheering tankers, are Captain Carlyle, your driver Susan, and Pearl. The tankers give another cheer as the Captain shouts something, rousing up the crowd. Susan spots you, and points you out to Carlyle. Upon seeing you, she waves you over, and the crowd turns to look and parts, letting you through.
"If it isn't our resident wunderkind, Robert Bradley!" cries Carlyle. This sends a murmur through the crowd, and you can hear your last name being mentioned. "I've got good news, wonderful news!"
"And what would that be, ma'am?" you ask. Pearl and Susan are glowing and grinning at you.
"We've found the girls! We know where they got taken! And once your tank gets fixed, Pearl has asked that you, personally, lead the charge."
There's a rousing clamour as tankers slap you on the back, wishing you luck and good fortune and all the rest.
"So, commander," Carlyle says, crossing her legs and giving you a look that sparkles with expectancy. "You think you're up to the challenge?"
It only takes you a moment to think. You grin. "Of course!"

And that's all for this week. What the hell do I usually say in these bits? Next thread will probably next weekend unless catastrophic circumstances get in the way. I'm hoping to get us moving out of Fulda and on to bigger things soon, but we'll see how things lead us.

Also still trying to get the hang of writing after so many long breaks and being out of it. It's a hard slog but I'll get there.
