"I-"

I stop myself, before searching around to make sure nothing else is in the room with me.
"I think I know what he's talking about." My hand wraps around the gold band in my pocket.
"Uh..? You do? Do you have something like that?" Kaori asks, confused.

"Yeah, I picked it up during the fight when he flashed it at me, and-"

Wait, what the heck are we doing!?

"No wait! We're not here for that! He just told us that to stall us!"
"H-He did? Why would he do that?"
"Because he probably has something bad planned, duh! We have to find Mom!"

Kaori looks as if she just mentally slapped herself.
"Oh right! Mom! Listen, if she's not on this floor, then she's probably back on the 13th floor. We could get there really quickly by dropping down the stairwell!"

"Right, let's-"
"You go ahead, without me!" Kaori heads back into the room, toward Asai's desk.

I look at her as if she's really lost it this time.
"Are you crazy?! I already told you that I'm not leaving you alone in here!"
"This is different! I think I can find out where Mom is from in here. If you lock the door, no one should be able to get in!"

"Yeah, no one except Asai. He's a crazy guy, I don't think you should be doing this!"
"Please Masami! I want to find Mom as much as you do, but wandering the building blindly isn't going to help either of us!"


>"uuuu OKAY FINE! But stay hidden, and leave through the roof when you find her!"

I look at her, and with a pouting glare, my lips purse together.
"No."

"B-but! We can't search by ourselves! Fortune is huge!"

Ergh. I hate to admit but she does have a point there.
"Okay FINE. But only if we find someone to wait here with you."

That gives Kaori pause for thought. I tell her who could wait here with her.
"That monster, the one who has never been a big jerk could do it."

"Oh, OH good idea!" She says, happily hopping toward the door. I open it for her as we step out into the hallway.

We walk down, past the meeting rooms, when.
CRASH.

A monster flies through the wall and crumples into dust.

Speaking of which, there's that monster now! He seems unhurt, and even seems to be looking for a fight!

"Hey!" I call out to it. He stops and steps through the hole in the wall.
"Masami, what are you doing here."
"Mom came to Fortune, and I can't find her!"

"Yes, but you being here would make her even more worried. I'll show you out to the roof exit."

"No wait!" I grab his hand. "You have to wait here with Kaori, she wants to try to find her from Asai's office."

"But-" He looks around, noticing nothing else seems to be in the area. "I'm going to miss the fight.. Come on Kaori."
"Quickly!" Kaori greedily grabs onto his other hand. "Masami, I'll call you when I find something!"

"Uh.. Okay." I wave to them as they disappear down the hallway.

I leap down the gap in the stairwell. At freefall, it shouldn't take me too long to reach the lower floors.

That is until an unseen arm sticks out from one of the stairways and knocks me off course. I tumble along the stairs until hitting one of the corners.

"Ow." I rub the back of my head as I look up to see what hit me.

It's a gigantic beast that looks not unlike a cockroach. If cockroaches were made out of metal.

Gross, I don't even want to touch it.

Looking at this shiny, metallic monster. There's only one word that comes to mind.
"Ew."

Wait, what am I doing!? He's just fighting everything that gets into arms reach, I have to find Mom!

Quickly reaching into my pocket, I find the invisibility card and quickly put it on. Turning, I dash opposite of him-
Right into another monster. Oof.

I fall onto my back as the other monster steps over me and approaches the first one. I'm glad I didn't try to fight now, or I would be stuck between two of them.

13th floor. Here it is.
Opening the door reveals-
Nothing. There's no one here.

Oh no! Now I really don't know where she went!

Quickly taking out my phone, I tap the tile for Kaori's phone.

Ring. Ring.
"Who is this?" A gruff voice on the line responds.
It's.. that friendly monster?

"Why do you have Kaori's phone?" I ask him, a little worried.
"I'm sorry, but it's the strangest thing. She immediately walked in here and took a nap."

"A... Nap? She's sleeping?"
"That's right. I don't know what to make of it or if it's intended."

I suddenly remember that she seems to have some kind of special powers while she's sleeping. While I don't see where she's going with this, I do understand that she at least has a plan of some kind.

"Let her sleep, I'm going to search around here and if I find anything, I'll call you back."

I hang up the phone and start searching through the rooms. First is the Chairman's office.
Before, when I could at least feel that there was hidden furniture and things inside of here, now there is nothing. It's very clearly an empty room, and I can feel that it's empty even on the 'other side'. They sure didn't take a lot of time looting his office, did they?

Next to it is the room that had the weird clock in it. For some reason, it's locked. Strange.

Lastly is the room with the cigarette smoke in it. It still smells, and I'm still not sure why a monster would need to smoke.

So that means the only door of value is the one that's locked.
That's when, I feel something shaking me. I don't feel anyone's hands on me, but it's still like I'm feeling a shaking sensation.

I don't see anything, though!

I look behind me, then to the side of me. Then something taps my shoulder again.

I turn around to be face to face with a WHITE KAORI IN A WHITE DRESS?

WHAT?!

"Ah-"

That's all my mouth is able to say.
Slowly I droop backwards onto the floor. The same half-sentence gasp that left my lips still the only thing on my face.

White-Kaori gasps, but nothing comes out. Then she starts frantically jumping up and down while waving her arms.

"I-I'm fine but.."

You know, Kaori looks really cute when she's so frantic.
"-but that dress looks really good on you! Where did you get it? And when did you dye your hair?"

I dart up to my feet and walk up to her. But she puts her hand to her ear and taps on it like that's supposed to mean something.

"Aw don't be that way." I kneel down and look at her shoes. Even they're white! So white and glossy and the laces are done almost perfectly.
She looks down at me and tries to say something, but doesn't say anything.

That's when I noticed the buttons on her dress! They're white too! White and shiny!
"Wow!" I exclaim, wrapping my fingers around them. They're just so.. bright! "This dress is almost spotless, how do you keep it so clean!"

She responds with a pout, before waving her arms at me again. I'm not sure what she's telling me. Her feet move backwards as she tries to pull away from my grasp. But I'm still holding onto the delicate frills.

Then the entire bottom of her dress lifts up, revealing something else.
"Wow." I say in amazement. "You even changed into white underwear, too!"

She whaps her dress back down to her knees and tries to slap at me. But-
Her hand goes straight through me!
"Wait."

Her face, despite being completely white, is clearly in a very intense pout. That's when it dawns on me.
"Wait, this is- One of your abilities?"

She waves her arm in the air again and points toward the locked door. I stand up and walk over to it.
"This? I can't get in."

Kaori slowly walks past me and melds into the door. There's a light click, and the handle spins without resistance.
"Oh wow! Thanks!"

Gently, I open the door.

"MOM!"

There she is, passed out on the desk. There's a card on the table, and she appears to be trying to refine it.
I have no idea how long she's been there, and her cheeks are already flush red.

Oh no!

"MOM! MOM!" I shake and shake her, but nothing happens.

Kaori points to another chair in the room, cutely trying to move it but failing.
I grab it and pull it up next to her. Kaori suddenly looks very nervous as she sits down. She appears to be doing something, but I can't tell what without her telling me.

"I'm going in right now!" I yell to Kaori as I take out a card.
Slowly, I feel myself drifting away to the other side.

Fortune's tower still has a presence here in this world. The walls are almost translucent, and the window shows the landscape of endless sky and water.
Inside the room, it's quiet and desolate.

"MOM!" I yell.

Wherever she is, she is not in this room. Neither is the card she was drafting.

That's not good, I don't know where she could have gone!

I'm right back to where I was before!
I open the door and run into the lobby, but-
There's Kaori again.

She's drawing a square on the floor, gently she draws what appears to be a.. trap door?

"Kaori what are you doing?"
"Get in!" She ghost-shouts. "I can't go with you, but this should take you to her!"

"Ah, uh. Right. You can talk now."
"Yeah, and I'm still mad about you flipping up my dress." She crosses her arms.

I was wanting to tell her how cute she is, but she grabs me and practically throws me onto the magic square. Quickly, I find myself moved.

To the outside. Fortune seems to be a small toy building.
I'm.. standing thousands of meters in the air!

Next to me, there's Mom, concentrating on a floating card.
"Mom!" I yell at her, the card stops glowing as she turns to look at me.
"Honey! What are you doing here?!"
"I came to get you back!"

"Masami, I'm glad you're worried but I have to do this! They're going to run amok through the city. I'll be done soon once I just.. figure something out."

With that, she gently droops to her knee, quickly she shakes her head and stands up again.

"No! Mom! You look like you're going to collapse, just leave! None of this is worth your health!"
"Honey.. I have to.. you won't be safe unless-"
"I got the signet!"

"G-good. Hand it over. I can maybe use it to finish-" Her face is still turning red.

"I can do it! Just, stand aside!"

"Honey. no. I don'-"

Her legs buckle out a second time as I rush over next to her. I grab her just before she hits the ground.
"Honey.." She whispers. "I'll try to help you, as long as I can stay here."

Right! I can do it then!

"Okay.. you're trying to rebuild the seal. Just do what I say, and you should be able to. If you do anything wrong, we'll have to start all over."

I walk through the motions she instructs me through. They get more and more complex as we go on.

"And finally, you need... you.."
She coughs, and then flickers out of existence. She just returned to the real world from exhaustion.

I'm left with the card floating in front of me. And no one around to instruct me.

"Oh no." I whisper.

Well, the theory is still sound, I think. Maybe if I just do this, I can finish it by-

"Oof." I say, clutching my head.

It didn't work out, and it kicked me out of that world. The card in front of me has quit glowing and is now blank.

The door has been opened and Mom is laying on a couch out on the lobby. Real-Kaori and the monster kneel next to her.
"Ah! Sis!" Kaori jumps up and runs over to me. "Did you do it?!"
"No.. I.. uh."
Kaori puts her hand on her chin, "Mom was saying just before she passed out that she messed up and we should take the ring to Asai. She said he could do it with just the ring."

"Wait, take it to Asai?"
"Yes, as in give it to him." She crosses her arms, "I don't like that as much as you do."

"No! I don't like that at all!"

"So.. What are you going to do, then? Mom will probably want to try the card thing again when she wakes up."
"I.."

I don't know!

I liked this, a nice long thread where something was accomplished!
