Your name is Michael Dunkin, and you work for the Inquisition. Previously you were a sergeant in the 291st Cadian Shock Troopers, but now you find yourself in the company of Inquisitor Christina Massey, of the Ordos Xenos. Following your recruitment into her ranks you took to your new occupation well, going beyond the call of just a standard bodyguard. Despite your initial suspicions about Inquisitional life you’ve met many interesting but welcoming characters in the Inquisitors company. However, with it came the drama you heard of. And then some.

Delving into the less pleasant parts of the Antebellum, you help Melodi track down...something. Though a bit of your pride is damaged, the trip is lacking in excitement besides a surprise run-in with Father Mikel. Before that, however, you had a long talk with Melodi about the story behind Naomi and all that entails. Going further by talking with Vincent, you're slowly beginning to get an idea of the whole picture. However, things never seen to stay calm for long.

You step out of the elevator and grow closer to the Inquisitor's quarters when you hear shouting coming from within. Normally you'd be reaching for your gun at this point, but you recognize the voices and it fills you with a different sort of dread.

It's Naomi and Christina. Neither sound particularly happy.

Approaching with caution, you quickly weigh your odds. As it stands, none seem too appealing.

Though you lack the gear for the job, you set up as if you're about to breach and clear the room. However, lacking a det charge to blow open the door you wait and listen.

"I didn't lie!" Naomi says. "I just..."

"Endangered the lives of yourself, the Lieutenant, and everyone else on this ship," Christina cuts her off. "I can't fault you for your intentions, but that's still no excuse."

"You keep acting like I'm some sort of ticking timebomb. I'm not a little girl anymore, Mom."

"No, you're not, but that doesn't change anything. Your abilities can do as much harm as they can do good. You need proper supervision to ensure you do not-"

"So you're where Mr. Danil got that line from."

"Naomi!"

"But you don't care about that, or him, do you? Do you know what the last thing he said to me was? 'Run, Miss!' Him, Mr. Alto, Miss Swun. Everyone at the Villa. They died for me. For YOU! And you've never even given enough of a damn to even say anything to acknowledge the fact!"

The silence that follows signals now or never. Gripping the door with one hand, you give a brief knock with the other before opening it and stepping through. Inside, you find both women looking equally surprised at your arrival. At once Naomi appears guilty while Christina reverts back to her Inquisitorial mask.

"Lieutenant," She says, briefly looking from Naomi to you. "Is there something you need?"

"Just checking in, seeing if you needed me for anything," You say, closing the door behind you. "I heard you two from down the hall."

At that Christina briefly shares Naomi's guilty expression, but it quickly passes.

"Have we gathered a crowd?" She asks.

"Not yet," You shake your head. "Though I can't say that'll last if you keep at it.."

"And...how much did you hear?"

"Mainly the last bit."

"I see," Christina says, clearly uncomfortable. For her part, Naomi seems equally thrilled. "I'm sorry about that. We were talking, and I suppose we both got a little... carried away."

Though she remains silent, Naomi's expression is a clear cry for help.

While you may not be family you were tasked with protecting both of them. Even from each other.

"Mind filling me in on what started all this?" You ask, though your gut already knows the answer.

"I suppose it was good you stopped by," Christina sighs, leaning against her desk. "We were discussing several things, but among the primary issues, you were one of them."

"Ah," You say, suspicions confirmed.

"As you may have overheard, and as I told you before, I was...upset to hear about what she had planned," Christina says. "I was attempting to explain why this was not a wise course of action, but she's proving...difficult to see reason."

"She won't listen to me, but she'll hear you," Naomi spoke up. "We've already done some stuff not in the beginner's handbook. I mean, I may not be the greatest, and I wasn't completely aware of the whole story at the time, but you know I can handle myself when it comes to being a psyker. I can show you for real if you just give me a chance. Just...try telling her that."

While perhaps the most disorganized Psyker you've ever met, Naomi certainly has a knack for her psychic abilities. Even if she wasn't fully aware she was using them to a major extent. However, you've also known plenty of Psykers that fit the bill of Ticking Timebomb. Both women look to you to say something.

>"Naomi's no child, ma'am, and she's not as reckless as you think."
>"You don't know how it can get, Naomi. I've seen what the Warp can do first-hand. It's...not pretty."

>>"You don't know how it can get, Naomi. I've seen what the Warp can do first-hand. It's...not pretty."

>>38701608
Hmmm. Naomi's not given much indication that she's particularly gung-ho with her powers. On the other hand I think Mike should note that he's seen some shit, and she should be wary, especially at her tender age.
>>
>>38701608
Let's split down the middle, warning of how the warp is fucking nasty AND how she shouldn't be treated like a child.

It's not something either of them want to hear, but you can only tell them the truth of the matter.

"Naomi," You say. "I've fought Orks, I've fought Tau, Hell, I've fought just about anything out there with teeth and at least one good eye. But if there's anything that'll make the hair on the back of my neck stand besides a Tyranid, it's the Warp and everything with it. I've seen good people meet terrible ends because of the Warp and what it brings. I'll admit, it's left a bad taste in my mouth."

Though clearly downtrodden, Naomi offers no rebuttal. However, before Christina can continue you turn to face her.

"You just have to keep in mind, a lot of times it was because some crackpot was actually TRYING to sacrifice himself to a dark god. You ask me to think of an Imperial psyker and I see a twitchy, hunched over poor sot with a psychic hood over his eyes with a firing squad always at the ready. Looking at Naomi, I wouldn't know she was one unless you told me. Well, I mean, besides..."

Having tripped over your thoughts, Naomi offers a quiet giggle while Christina seems to take in your words with a thoughtful smile.

"What I'm getting at is that Naomi's not a kid, but more importantly, she's not stupid," You continue. "You have to give the girl credit, ma'am, but I agree you've got good reason to be worried. But... we've both seen the types that turn bad, haven't we? I can't say she's one."

"No, I can't say she is," Christina admits. "I'm only overzealous because I have to be, you know this."

"I do," You nod. "Just...cut the girl some slack, ma'am? She's yours after all; she's got the brains to handle herself."

Rolling her eyes, Christina briefly smiles before becoming sullen.

"Thomas Danil, age 42," She says in a quiet tone. "No living family, no major contacts outside my other operatives; he was a good operative, a great teacher, and a kind man. The yearly bonus I gave him primarily went to you, along with the rest of his salary. He may have been your primary instructor, but I suppose I also paid him to be the parent I couldn't be."

"Mom..." Naomi says, expression softening as she approaches her. At first hesitant, she embraces Christina, and though caught off the Inquisitor returns in. For the briefest moment you see Christina smile in a way that's neither forced nor sarcastic. It's a rare but pleasant sight.

Then she seems to remember you're there and it's gone as soon as it came. Gently but firmly, she pushes Naomi to arms length.

"I'm sorry," She says.

"I think we both needed to get it out of our system," Naomi admits.

"Hmm," Christina nods, then raises a brow. "On the subject, where did you pick up your new penchant for swearing?"

At that Naomi's cheeks redden and she offers a very guilty laugh.

"N-Nowhere," She says, but quickly wilts under the Inquisitor's gaze. "Uncle Vinny says it adds character."

"That man," Christina sighs. "I'll talk with -him- later. In the meantime, I need to speak with the Lieutenant."

"Don't worry, I get it. Super secret Inquisitor stuff," Naomi says in a resigned tone, turning and making her way towards the door.

Before she passes you she mouths a silent 'thank you.' When she's gone, Christina clears her throat, embarrassed.

"It wasn't my intention for you to play referee," She admits.

"I gotta earn my meal ticket somehow," You shrug.

"Of course you do," She replies dryly. "While you're here I may as well tell you now. We'll be visiting Alexi in two days to discuss the situation here and in other parts of the sector involving the insurgents."

"Belly of the beast," You note.

"You've spent too much time with Vincent," She warns. "I ask that you keep on your best behavior while we're there. Understood?"

"Just do what you do best," Christina says with a smirk. "Stand there silently and glare at everyone."

"Sounds doable."

At that Christina laughs, and at the sound you smile.

"Well, that was...certainly something," She notes, moving around to sit at her desk. "Was there anything else you actually needed?"

Remembering your original purpose, you decide things ended well enough for you to still ask with little problem. You hope.

"Roxy asked for me to join her and Alpha for a night out on the town," You say. "I told them I was all for it, but I thought I'd check in with you first. Make sure I wasn't needed."

"As far as I'm aware, no," Christina answers. "No, no, please. You've earned a break from all this madness."

"So have you," You point out.

"I have plans for tonight as well, rest assured," Christina says, smiling at your surprised expression. "Nothing so grand, I assure you. Simply a night spent with Naomi. After what happened before, I think we could use the time to bond."

"Happy to hear it, ma'am."

"Now, go have fun. Just...not too much fun. I need you sober by tomorrow night."

"Will do."

Bidding her farewell, you left her room to find Naomi waiting for you in the hall. Pushing herself off the wall, she smiles wryly.

"I suppose it's my fault," She admits. "I thought the 'don't tell Mom' bit went without saying for our agreement."

>"She's my boss, Naomi. I couldn't -not- tell her."

"Have you ever tried keeping something from an Inquisitor?" You ask, trying to make light of it. "I can play Tarot with the best of them, but she can read me like a book."

"I suppose," Naomi admits. "She doesn't stop until she gets what she wants, that's for sure. Must be why she's an Inquisitor."

"Yeah, she's an Inquisitor. She's also your mother," You say. "She's a bit overbearing, but remember where we found you?"

You may have overstepped there, judging by her expression, but you press on.

"She only does it because she cares, Naomi," You say. "You can't blame her for caring."

"No, I can't. I just..." Naomi shakes her head, smiling. "I know, I know. It's alright. Thanks again, for sticking up for me."

"Happy to do it," You say, returning it. "Just...try not to give her anymore reason to worry."

"She's gonna do that all by herself," Naomi mutters. "I mean, will do!"

Though you feel as if the girl's going to be further trouble, you leave to get ready for tonight. Though you don't expect trouble you're also fairly paranoid. Knife being a given, you debate taking something with a bit more kick.

Having learned a few cliche but effective means of hiding firearms on you, the laspistol is hidden beneath your clothing in short order.

In short order the time arrives and you enter the hangar to find Alpha there and loading onto a public transport meant for general crewmen leaving for shore.

"LT!" Roxy called, waving you over. "Glad you could make it."

"So, what's the plan?" You ask, taking a seat with them.

"Ain't it obvious?" Casus asks. "Get shitfaced."

"Some of us," Burk says, looking none to approving.

"How much you drink's on you," Roxy shrugs. "But if we have to carry your ass back to the ship you're sweating it off in the brig."

"Sounds fun," You say. "Glad to see we're all here."

You nod to Gabriel who replies in kind, looking more than happy to finally be off the ship, even if only for shore leave. He seems to have grown more accustomed to the new legs, reclining in his seat as he usually did.

"So where we heading?" You ask.

"Still deciding on that one," Roxy admitted. "Where we go'll dictate the quality of company and drink. As well as how many Arbites are around."

"Do we plan on being criminals?"

"Well, no, but you gotta consider every outcome."

You can't help but chuckle as they continue to try and decide on which level of the hive to try.

It's more or less unanimous that the middle hive is your target, as is it that of the majority of the rest on the transport. Before long you reach a docking bay and are offloaded with the others, spilling out into the bustling street as the nightlife begins to pick up.

"Don't have too much fun there, Jo," Wyack says.

Having no qualms with openly displaying a firearm, Jonah regards the other trooper and his surroundings with an equal amount of neutrality. You sense it wasn't his own desire that brought him out here.

"I'll make every effort," Jonah replies.

"That's the spirit," Wyack chuckles.

Inspecting your surroundings, you remain next to Roxy at the front of the group.

"So, plan on joining us in a drink or are you joining Burk as Designated Herder?" She asks.

"Herder?" You ask.

"Well we sure as hell ain't driving. We're a bit like a herd of ornery grox when drunk, hard to keep together. So we keep one or two sober to play sheperd."

"Eh," You shrug. "A drink or two won't hurt."

"That's the spirit," Roxy grins.

After a bit of searching you all find a bar not looking particularly upstanding or too grimy. Piling inside, you find a table able to seat you all and go about ordering the first round.

"So, you gonna fess up now or do I gotta drink you under the table first?" Roxy asks lowly, voice lost to the others in the buzz of the room.

"What do you mean?" You ask.

"Don't be coy," She squints. "Something's up with the Inquisitor and the Commander. Vincent's gotta a bigger pole up his ass than usual. You're with them more often than us, so you've gotta know something."

It'd raise too many questions to just cut and run, but you can't just ignore her either. She'd make sure you couldn't.

"You don't want in on this, Rox," You assure her. "Trust me."

"Why not?" Roxy asks, objection clear.

"Because talking about it can get us all shot."

At that her eyes widen.

"You remember the guest from the ball?" You ask. "Put me in a damn near coma on the spot?"

"Hard to forget," Roxy mutters. "I'd have kicked his ass if She'd let me."

"Well, he's around and being a real pain in the ass about it," You say. "I can't say more."

Before she can reply Wyack cuts her off.

"Gettin' cozy over there early, ain't we, sirs?" He grins, jabbing a thumb behind him. "Bathroom's that way, for future reference."

"Piss off, Wy," Roxy replies sweetly with a one-fingered salute.

Letting out a snort, the Trooper regards you curiously for anything as some of the others watch on.

"Thanks for the worry, Trooper, but I went before I left," You answer dryly. "Besides, Sergeant Kelleher and I were just talking about how well Alpha's been performing."

"Top scores all around?" Casus asks.

"You bet your ass we're the best," Roxy grinned. "Well, most of us. Then there's Wy."

"You're just not addin' in morale support," the man chuckles. "Somebody's gotta have a sense'a humor on that damn tub."

"No arguments there," Gabriel chips in.

Letting the conversation remain casual and low-key, you lean back and enjoy the time spent with friends. And amasec that's not too terrible.

The first few rounds come and go with little to no effort. You've managed a lot more, much higher quality stuff back on the ship. Most of your own comrades are the same, though the youngest member, Jami, seems to be a bit happier and more outspoken than usual.

"Fffuck you, man!" Jami grumbles. "That shit wasn't funny!"

"You nearly drowned in a puddle," Roxy says. "You didn't actually drown, so we're allowed to laugh."

"Even I laughed at the time," Jonah admits.

"Scariest fuckin' sound I ever heard..." Jami mutters.

The next set of rounds soon arrive and the night is still young. You admit you're feeling good, but not too good. Enough to unwind.

"Ah, come on, LT," Roxy grins. "You sure?"

"I think Burk could use a hand," You say.

While others lightly scorn you, the Troopers gives you a grateful smile and a nod. Sitting back, you enjoy the slow but steady decline in quality of the conversation at the table as the others grow steadily more intoxicated.

"...and BOOM!" Casus declares, opening his closed hand dramatically. "It was...i-it was like a message from the Emperor himself. I kn...kna...knew, then, what I was going to do with my life. Granted, the...garden...shop...thing, was never the same, but. BUT! I've been blowing things up on purpose ever since."

"Explains the lack of eyebrows," Jonah notes, sending several of his comrades into giggling fits.

"They're there!" Casus objects, looking hurt. "Just...ya know...regrowing, from last time."

"What was last time?" You ask.

"Don't remember."

The rest of you laugh, if a little at his expense.

It's faint, difficult to sense at first with your merry mood, but it soon becomes clear. Your gut's warning you of trouble, but as always the specifics are left for you to find.

You glance around casually, trying to look for anything out of the ordinary, but see nothing but the crowd befitting such a place. It might be nothing, and you don't want to ruin the mood because of your own paranoia, but the feeling remains.

As it stands only Burk and Jonah are fully sober, you and Gabriel being a close second with the rest varying degrees of intoxicated but still coherent. The three still paying attention turn to you.

"We've got trouble," You continue. "I don't know what, but something's up."

"Agreed," Jonah adds. "I've felt it for a time now. We're being watched."

"Great," Gabriel mutters. "What do we do?"

"Let's split before whoever's watching makes a move," You suggest.

"And proceed to walk into an ambush," Jonah deadpanned.

"Better to catch us on our feet than sitting down," Gabriel adds. "Each of us grab a drunk; Jonah, you take the lead."

"Will do," Jonah replies.

Of the group, only Jami and Wyack are intoxicated enough to require any serious help. Casus and Roxy are obviously under the influence, but not enough to be too much of a pain.

"So," Roxy murmurs, playing up her role as she cling to your side for support as you both stand. "How many do you think it'll be?"

"Probably a few too many," You answer back.

"Packing?"

"Yup."

"Fuck yeah. This should be fun."

With Gabriel assisting Jami and Burk taking Wyack, Casus manages to pull off a surprisingly believable 'I'm not drunk' look despite the truth of the matter.

Covering the bill, the group begins to make its way back into the crowded street.

"Okay, we're out and nothing happened," Jonah notes. "Do we head home or double back, lay an ambush?"

>>38709681
Why would you even take Rox when she can barely stand?
>>
>>38709440

"We're in no shape for anything crazy," You say. "I can give as good as I get in a fight, but I don't want those two in the middle of it."

You signal to Wyack and Jami.

"Smart," Gabriel nods.

"You're the Lieutenant," Jonah replies with a shrug.

Calling ahead to the transport of possible trouble, they acknowledge and report they'll keep an eye and an ear out for trouble. Trying to make it not seem obvious of the urgency, you and the others begin to make your way back.

Continuing on, you make good time as you grow closer and closer still to the transport. Roxy is less than thrilled to be skipping out on a fight, but as it stands she's much less stubborn then usual.

"See anything?" You ask.

"I do," Jonah says, and the rest tense. "We do, in fact, have company."

"How many?"

"Three, as far as I can tell. No obvious weapons, but they're no fools by any means."

"So we get to kick their asses now?" Roxy asks.

"We're close enough for the others to make it," Jonah muses. "If the Lieutenant wishes, he and I could hold back and...talk, with our pursuers."

"You sure that's a great idea?" You ask.

"I can watch over this bunch," Burk assures you. "I'll throw them onto the transport and come back with as much muscle as I can."

"I'm stayin' too," Casus says. "Got somethin' ya might need if it gets hairy."

"Me too," Roxy offers.

After breaking off from the main traffic your group heads for the docking bay you came from. However, shortly after breaking off you and Jonah become scarce and let the others go on.

"So," Jonah begins. "How are we going to go about this, Lieutenant?"

"Ambush the ambushers," You say. "And spare one if you can. We could use the intel."

For perhaps the first time you see Jonah smile. It's not a sight you'd like to ever see again. Bringing his laspistol to bare, he retrievers a dampener from his pouch and slides it onto his weapon.

It's not long after that you hear footsteps approaching, and both of you take cover and wait. Sure enough, a trio of figures appear, no weapon easily visible but all three looking fairly mean.

Jonah waits for you to make the first move, and as they close in you spring the trap.

The ever wise GM forgot to add in that you still have two Fate Points left. Just for consideration.
>>
>>38711438
Use one.

should we go for it?
this isn't the most dire of situations but a clean ambush would be nice.

Dunno we might be able to bounce back from the 1, you've done failing fowards before

we'll probably just completely fail to take out 1 of the guys and our friend apparently is looking forward to doing some damage.

You guys have played this before right? Elijah has done failing fowards before, that 1 is just going to botch the ambush not the whole battle.

Didn't one guy die and another guy lose his legs?
>>
>>38711825
I guess thats true too...Fuck I don't know anymore.

As >>38711785 said I'm not gonna bring down the TPK over just one bad roll. Death isn't going to smack you in the face if you don't spend the point, you'll just not be in the greatest position in the world by any extent of the imagination.

Starting now, vote yae or nae for the fate point. Voting ends in five minutes, lightning round.

I was young, and foolish. Think of this as the New Testament; I've mellowed out in my malevolence. To an extent.

You and Jonah strike at once, pouncing on the trio. A heavy right hook from behind sends one man sprawling to the ground, a muffled crack from Jonah causing another to follow shortly after for a more permanent stay.

However, the third man avoids your next blow and slams into you. Forcing you back, he bashes you against the wall, landing a blow into your gut that briefly robs you of air.

"Picked a bad night for a walk, soldier," He growls, then freezes.

"I think not," Jonah says, pistol pressed against the back of the man's head.

Before either of you could react a shout of alarm gets your attention. Back from where the men came, four more have appeared and are making towards you with due haste. Using the distraction, the man pinning you turns around and slugs Jonah in the face, sending the man stumbling backwards as the first man begins to climb to your feet.

Alright.

Fuck this.

Reaching behind you, you bring your laspistol free from its place tucked away under your shirt. The men in front of you is only partially turned back around when you shoot him in the head. A kick to the face of the man attempting to stand sends him back down, out cold.

Without a dampener it's loud, but as a slug round whizzes by your head you know stealth is out the window.

Moving behind a nearby dumpster, you fire a few quick shots at the men. You managed to hit one and send the others scattering as on the opposite side of you Jonah takes up position and joins you.

"Yer fuckin' dead now, mate!" One of them snarls.

"Feeling's mutual, 'mate'!" You answer.

"That backup sure would be nice right about now," You mutter, snapping off a quick shot.

To answer, a hand grabs your head from behind and slams you into the dumpster. Whipping around, you throw a blind punch that catches a man in the throat, but his companion pounces on you before you can recover. Where the hell had these guys come from?

Wrestling with the man, you spot Jonah in a similar situation with a man twice his size keeping him in a choke hold that he's scrambling to break.

You almost overpower the man attacking you when his companion recovers and moves in to assist. And judging by the shouting, the men from in front are closing in.

As much as you struggle, there are simply too many of them for you to take on. Your gun and blade are wrestled from your grasp and a rain of blows send you down to the ground.

On the bright side, being pinned between a dumpster and the wall means only three of them can beat on you at a time.

You don't know what kind of damage Jonah's getting.

As the attacks continue you can only curl up, gritting your teeth as the assault seems to last for eternity.

Then, finally, it halts.

All at once they halt, and you risk opening an eye to see them having stepped aside to let a middle aged man approach. Squatting down, he looks at you, bloody and bruised, and grins.

"Where's your God Emperor now, dog?" He chuckles lowly.

The 1 wasn't even in the first 5. It is a stupid rule though.

it's a trade off since we for whatever reason seemed to get a lot of saving nat20s after the first 3 in the previous threads.

The rule is, first five roll count for our average barring any crits in the first ten rolls. Got to take the good with the bad and that rule has saved us a couple of times.

No...its first three rolls with extension to five in they are crits.

"I'm not a guardsman you fucking idiot!" You growl, spitting blood.

"A sheep in wolves clothing, then?" The man asks. "I'm not sure if you're incredibly brave or incredibly stupid."

"And who the fuck are you supposed to be?"

"Simple," He says, smiling. "We're the sons of-"

A lasrifle cracks and cuts him off, followed by several more and within seconds all hell seems to break loose. A number of men fall while others turn to return fire. Several throw themselves in the way of the man who spoke, at least two receiving a lethal blow for their efforts.

As soon as the shooting began it stops, and with effort you pull yourself up to see Burk, Gabriel, and several armsmen sprinting towards you.

"Sir," Burk says as they arrive, helping you up. "We came as fast as we could. When we heard the shots..."

"Let's get the hell out of here," Jonah cuts him off, shoving off an armsmen despite obvious injuries. "Grab that one."

He points to the man you'd knocked unconscious.

Accepting the support from the large Mordian, you grimace at every movement but keep the complaint to yourself.

Looking behind you one last time, you and the others make your way back to the hangar bay just in time to hear the distant sounds of Arbite sirens.

_____________________________

While the first five rule may be a bit odd, I'd like to point out all the nat 1's that counted (the last did not because you were able to stand after help arrived) were within the first three rolls. If there's really a major complaint about it I'm willing to go with the flow. You guys decided on the rule, I'll continue to let you guys have your two cents put in on it and anything else. I like to keep good feedback with you guys.

Dunno about a Monday thread, but there's still a small chance. We'll just have to see.

As always, any complaints/questions/whatever you have, now's the time to voice'em.
>>
>>38713660
Ah, nobody expects the spanish inquisition!

Also honesty always wins, especially when you get to throw people off with it!
>>
>>38713660
I wasn't there when the rule was enacted, but I remember all it was, was a few anons were mad about 20s being on the 4th rolls and what not.

The issue is it makes me not want to participate in rolling cause I am afraid by the time I do it'll be already past the first three and I'll fuck everything up with a 1.

Would rather just have straight first three personally.

Thanks for the run though.
