You've managed to dodge your mother so far-
Spending half the day sort of limping around town, seeing how everyone made out after last night.

Of course, you're still sort of a mess. Bandages and cracked chitin and all.
The pain isn't all there, but you're not quite as responsive as you should be.

It's a nice day, at least.
With your walls torn down, you can feel a light breeze flitting between the buildings of the village, the slow, crawling warmth of sunlight on your skin. The town itself is as lively as ever- maybe more so, after such a brush with destruction. The village is crowded, people resting wherever they can find solace, laughter and the scents of food- burnt and otherwise- drifting through the streets.

You suppose that the workers took the day off. Or maybe the adventurers are expected to secure the woods before they head back out?
What a mess.

>You can't actually dodge your mother forever. Right?
>You could totally try.
>The sun is up. The weather is nice. Just relax. Let your injuries clear up and calm down.

Seriously, I don't think this is a "get it over with" type deal. Mom knows Lyra is injured. She actually bent over backwards (well, bent other people over backwards) to make sure Lyra could rest and recuperate. She isn't about to beat us into the ground.

She's in Mama Bear mode, speaking of which, I can't believe she hasn't been trying to stuff us to the gills until we feel better.

Well, it's apparently getting an anime now. And the manga is coming along, albeit slower than fucking molasses.

So as long as you're armed with patience, you can skip it!
Although it appears you might have started, so Im just gonna go ahead and assume you're a masochist anyway.

>>38699892
Honestly, I'm surprised she hasn't found us already.
She's in town, right? It's not that big a place. And there's a giant stone tree overlook she could use to spot the VERY OBVIOUS giant red spider.
>>
>>38699992

I guarantee you, she's yelling at the armorer and the merchant lady trying to get something to keep us from getting injured again. Mikhael probably got in a shouting match for at least a day over the armor that got bitten to pieces by lousy wolves.

Yes, since when have I listened to other's taste? Especially on 4chan? Should have listened LN is basically garbage but the manga isn't half terrible.
>>
>>38700377
Anin, it didn't even require you to blindly trust others' taste. There were extensive listing of what is bad in it, you could have applied your own taste.
Why didn't you listen.

Also manga didn't get to the point of LB going off the rails last time I checked. I really wonder how the hell are they going to handle the rapecamp.

Probably lightly glossing it over. Seeing it in action is better then reading it as a diary of how awesome he was.

The lack of real dialog hurts it, it moves too fast and no real character interaction.

You briefly consider running.
In your current state, you most certainly have no chance of actually keeping away from her- but if you were to hide, you could...
No, no. It would never work. The caravans come into town. All she'd have to do is watch them, and you wouldn't be able to escape.

You condemn yourself to your fate, and start looking for your mother.

It isn't hard. Between Sheszka and yourself- and the fact that there is only 3 arachne in town, one of them being you- you follow her scent easily.
She spent the night at Lia's house, apparently.
Which is completely expected. Chances are she didn't know that you'd built Elle a home already.

You knock at the door lightly. With the loss of feeling in your chitin, you're not willing to take chances with people homes and things.
You idle outside as you wait for an answer. An excuse, maybe? You can probably get out of any training with the injuries, even if it isn't too bad.

"Come in!"
Your friend's mother's cheery voice defies your mood, and you pull the door open, entering the cabin.

Your mother is sprawled on the floor, a solid looking glass of amber liquid cupped in her hand, her cheeks tinted red with the heat of drink.
Lia and Jared are on the bed, sitting easily next to each other, their faces in much the same state.
Though Jin's human parent has to hold both glasses.

"Lyra?"
"Mom."
Her face clouds over as the brings herself to her feet, liquor swirling dangerously close to the lips of her cup. She manages to remember to drop it onto a table before she clatters towards you.

"You- you!"
"Um-"

"What are you doing up, you little idiot!"
"I- what-"
She seizes you in a hug the second you're in range, your ribs creaking under her strength.

You wheeze out an answer despite the pressure.
"I was- There is lots to do, yes?"
"And lots of people to do it, you, you eight legged fool!"
"You have eight legs-"
"I have a brain atop them!"
>>
>>38700632

"I-"
"Sit."

Your legs fold beneath you at the tone alone.

"Not there! Come inside!"
Your friends parents are trying very hard not to laugh, though not entirely successful. Lia keeps snickering under her breath.
You can hear it though. You can hear everything. Damn elf ears!

You half scuttle, half drag yourself inside. Nin skips to the table and takes a seat, while Sheszka takes something like a guarding pose next to you.
Jin starts chirping to her mother in harpy speak.

And your mother glowers.

>>
>>38701421
Yeah, but with this you gotta include some size difference, which means shoving in one (relatively) huge egg by abusing the snake's stretchy mouth rather than dumping a clutch in the ass.
>>
>>38701340

Everybody has divergent tastes, and you won't please everyone all of the time. Be content with that from the start, because otherwise you'll never be satisfied.

From there, first person or omniscient third person perspective is probably your best bet, because that particular view allows you to focus more deeply into the world of the participating characters' sensations and thoughts, which can matter as much as physical feelings, so don't be afraid to explore the character's state of mind.

Beyond that, remember that writing is a storytelling exercise. It can be helpful to imagine that you aren't writing at the keyboard at all, but rather telling someone a story with your own words in person. Think of how you would keep them entertained, tickle their interests, and how much detail they would really need to feel like they were there.

That's my two cents at any rate. I've written some 300 pages of smut since mid January with mostly positive feedback, for whatever that's worth.

I understood some of the words and phrases you said.

You swallow your excuses, folding your frontmost legs before you, leaving your hands resting in your 'lap'.
Your mother- well, it's not really pacing. The cabin simply doesn't have room for the angry roaming he clearly wants to be doing. That slow, burgeoning silence as she marches from one side to the other, your head following her around, the the suspense building till you need to stare holes into the floor, unable to take it-

In any case, it's denied to her.
So she makes due with what she has, folding her arms over her chest and glaring down from above you.

"What were you thinking! You were fighting and you were injured- you passed out in the street! And when I manage to get you into a bed and assume you are safe-"
She releases her elbows, arms unfurling as she waves them around, trying to work off her excess anger as she speaks.
"-This, this, all of this- Why did you not stay in bed?"

She stand over you, waiting for an answer.
You swallow again, tongue wetting suddenly dry lips as you open your mouth to speak.

"I, I could not- I couldn't just stay, yes? The town, and everyone-"
"You could not stay why?"
"I woke up."

She steps close, one arm reaching out to prod the chitin of your hands.
"And you are not feeling dull? Slow? Tired?"
"Well-"
"Do no even try, yes."

You go quiet again.

"You are hurt. More than that, your shell is cracked, yes? So you are hungry and slow and tired. You feel strange. And for some, some reason that I cannot even imagine, you think that this means that you should get up and walk around and do things!"
You look down, lips pursed, keeping your eyes on your legs. You aren't going to cry.
>>
>>38701511
Tl;dr:
Don't try to please everyone
Write as if you are one of the characters or as a voyeur.
Tell a story.
>>
>>38701902

Your mother takes a long look at your bowed head, one of her hands brushing her hair from her face, resting on her forehead around closed eyes.
She lets out a deep sigh.

She folds her legs, lowering herself in front of you, hands reaching out to brush your hair from your face.
She cups your chin, drawing you to face her, thumbs rubbing gentle circles into your cheeks.

"Lyra. Dearheart. Please look at me, yes."
Your eyes slowly shift, trailing up your mother's arms till you reach her mouth.

You pause, hesitant.
You push it aside with a sniffle, meeting your Mother's eyes.

Her face is a mirror of your own.
Brows pushed to meet, worry written across her features. Unshed tears beading in her eyes.
"Lyra. Please. I understand, yes? That you are grown. That you will make your own. But this... Take care of yourself. Please, please, little one. If you are hurt, there is no shame in recovering. Listen to your body."

Her hands slip down to your shoulders, pulling your forwards, resting her forehead on your own.
"I want to see you grown and strong, little one. And I am scared... that..."
Her voice trails off, and you are dimly aware that your friends- all of them, and even one's parents- have escaped the small, silent cabin.

"Promise me. Please."

Nah, remember the town isn't the one actually buying the silk, merchants are. And there aren't many spiderbutts willing to trade their silk. One family isn't going to even dent the demand for it.
>>
>>38702413
I doubt it. A local surplus just means exporting it to a wider market. Elles silk will be traded far and wide. Meaning the demand won't drop and the price will stay about the same. Probably.

If LOTS of Arachne follow her example, the price might drop, but one will only ever be a drop in the ocean.

You let your head fall to one side, pulling your Mom closer, muffling your sniffles with her shoulder.
She holds you like that, for a little while.

Eventually, you pull back from her shoulder, scrubbing at your face with your sleeve, trying to clear away the mess.
You're mostly successful.

Mom is red nosed and red eyed, but the sadness is gone from her expression. Her smile is wan, but her eyes look soft.
"You look a mess, little one."
"Mmm."

You sniffle again, trying to clear your nose.

"I promise, yes? Not that I will not- will not ever take risks, or that I won't ever be in danger-"
"I wouldn't ask you for that, Lyra."
"Yes. But I, I- I will let people help. I won't try to do everything myself, or alone. I can heal and people can fix things, and it will be okay."
"Mhm."

Mom strokes your head again, combing some of the worse tangles from your hair. You dip yourself towards her, letting her work in silence. For a little while, at least.

"I think we chased them all out, little one."
"It was probably you. Even the guild people were scared, yes."
"Oh?"
"They tried to stop me doing anything."
"That is good. I won't need to do anything drastic if they kept their promises-"
"Mom!"

She chuckles, working on a stubborn knot.
"I am your mother, yes. It is allowed."
"I- Fine."
"You will find out yourself, some day."
"I have a lot of things to do before then, yes."
"Good."
>>
>>38702865

You snort, and she pushes your head to one side, working on another length of your hair.
It's relaxing, like this. Quiet, only your family for company.

"Will- Will healing take long?"
"What you did to your arm will take a while, yes? But your chitin should be fine before the week is through."
"It feels dull, yes?"
"It will do that. Let it heal, dearheart."

You feel her fingers pull free from your hair, combing it out to something less resemblent of a mane.
"There. Now stand up, little one. There isn't room for us all here. There isn't room for you all in your friends room, either, but she doesn't complain as much."

well since we're not going to be doing anything I say let mom know about your sister's new house, ask her what she was like in her adventuring days, see if you can't figure a way to spread out the monsters so you all don't just crowd one place (Like Jin sleeping at her own house since we're all staying in town), and then just sunbath the rest of the day away. Unless that get's boring, then we can try smithing again since I'm not sure if we've done that in awhile.

Writing!
>>
You mother stands first, pulling you up after her.
Which you are grateful for, even if you don't vocalize it.
You both smile at each other, though.

You walk easily through the door, out into the sunlight. It's past its apex, starting its daily decline- Late noon or something like it.
You've got time, though.

Jin is currently engaged with her mother, trying to convince the older harpy to convince her father to share their drinks.
Her father, for his part, is wearing a look that tells you in no uncertain terms that he will drink every drop of the liquor before he allows Jin any.

He shoots you a smile full of gratitude when you pick up the errant owl, saying quiet goodbyes and thanks to her family for their patience.

Sheszka uncurls herself from her spot beneath a tree, and Nin stands up as well, following along after you as you march away.

All in all, maybe not as bad as you thought?
Emotion-wise, you're feeling... drained almost. There's a definite sense of relief beneath it all, though.
You manage a light smile to yourself as you walk, searching out a nice clear spot to lie down in.

"So."
"Nin?"
"What happened?"

You blink, shrug.
It isn't really the sort of thing you can summarize, is it?

"We talked, yes?"
"And?"
"And I promised that I would rely on people more. And not try to do everything myself."
"And not get up hours after you've been injured and walk around looking for work?"
"...Yes."

She nods, and your wolf follows suit.
"Good."
"You too?"
"You have a pack. We should be working. I am strong and fast, and Jin is strong and fast. You can-"
She frowns, shaking her head.
"I do not know the word."
"Maybe-"
>>
>>38703847
"Hey!"
"Hey, what?"
"What about me!"
The white haired wolf nods again, keeping an even stride next to you, loping along.
"Nin is soft. And small?"

The moth sputters, crossing her arms as she frowns, and you let yourself smirk a little as you pick out a nice even patch of sunlight.
You call up a perfectly shaped stone and sink onto it, giving it a little burst of flame powered heat to start you off.

You sigh as you spread yourself out. Sunlight is a magic all it's own.
Your friends arrange themselves as best they can around you, wings flapping and shifting to make room for one another.

"This is nice."
"Yes."
"Are we staying in town again tonight?"
"Mhm. I think we will bother my sister instead of Lann."
"Well, there'll be no shortage of space then."
"No beds though."
"There aren't any at home, either."

You smile again, wider this time.
Home.
Not just to you, but to your friends as well.
It's a good feeling.

>>38704262
REQM, I would suggest you start using a little descriptive text to show who's talking.

As long as it's just Lyra and another taking turns speaking, it's fine with just dialogue text, but with more people talking it can become unclear who is saying what.
>>
>>38704969
>As long as it's just Lyra and another taking turns speaking, it's fine with just dialogue text, but with more people talking it can become unclear who is saying what.

This is important. During that last exchange I had trouble telling jin nin and shezka apart.
>>
>>38704969
A good point. The 'confession booth' style works fine when it's just two people, but beyond that requires a little change in style.
>>
My apologies.
I had to run around picking people up from bars, but now I'm back, and I have food at my computer, which is sort of a plus?

I'm glad people liked the conversation. I'll keep in mind the tags for next time.
Should I be using things like 'says', or is there a better way to go about it?
>>
>>38705421
I see three ways to go about it, more verbal-quirks to identify the speaker by, which is hard but rewarding.
Putting in [Name] behind the line.
or describing the conversation more, and going with variations of "says X", basically describing from where the line comes.
>>
>>38705421
When writing dialogue, I like to make a rough list of preceeding statements such as, 'X cuts in' or 'X says' or so on. I find it helps things flow with little extra effort.
>>
>>38705421
Proofread. Just run through the conversation in your head a couple times to make sure it's clear who is speaking at any given time.

Using 'says' every other line would be a mistake, there are a lot of ways to differentiate between multiple people in a single conversation. Description of facial expressions before the speech, description of posture, that sort of thing. 'says' and variants are alright, just don't overuse them. Maybe also use names more often, 'she' only gets so far when every participant is female.

That said, your writing is already good, just these little issues that need addressing.
>>
>>38705493
>>38705570
Combination of these two, basically. Mix it up a little to make sure words don't get stale.
>>
>>38705421
In most cases, the way that feels most natural in the flow of a conversation is to add a short description before or after the dialogue.

>"Hey!" The little moth squeaks indignantly.
>Sheszka faced the little moth with a sly smile, "hey, what?"
>"What about me!"
>The white haired wolf nods again, keeping an even stride next to you, loping along. "Nin is soft. And small?"

>The moth sputters, crossing her arms as she frowns, and you let yourself smirk a little as you pick out a nice even patch of sunlight.

Just adding 'said' is fine sometimes, but constant use can become grating.
>>
>>38705743
This is how it should be done.
>>
>>38705743
Pretty much this. Don't feel the need to go over the top with it until you feel comfortable, though.
>>
>>38705421

It's with more than a little regret that you pull yourself off the stone, yawning and that's it.
Stretching is making your chitin make weird noises.
So you'll skip that step.

It takes a little longer to pry your friends from the rock, but you're on your way to Elle's house in no time at all.
You knock twice in rapid succession, waiting for a muffled yell from your sister before you push your way in.

"Ellllle!"
"Lyra."
"Hello."
"You're back soon."

"Yes."
"Is that it?"
"No? Can we stay the night?"
"All of you?"
"Yes."

"Sheszka, Nin, Jin and You?"
"Ye- No? Ezzy too. But she takes no space, yes?"
"The lamia? She isn't here, yes?"
"What?"

You grope for your neck.
There is no scaly necklace in place at your neck.
"Whoops."
"Did- Did you lose your friend?"
"No! No, no. I am, uh. Very certain, yes? She is under Lann's pillow."

Your sister looks to your friends with a pitying look on her face.
No, stop that!
"Lyra, there are limits to being scatterbrained, yes?"
"I am not that bad! Right?"
Your friends have turned away.

"It's- I know where she is! This doesn't count!"
"You can stay if you'd like, yes? You built it."
"Oh. Ah, thank you."
"But I will count your friends at the door before I let you in."

You flee blushing.
Nin's giggling doesn't help.

_________________________________________________________

Thirty minutes have gone by, your face is full of food, but it isn't helping.
"I can't believe you forgot her under my pillow."
You try to protest through a mouthful of food, but you're fairly certain that noone is listening anyway.
"Ssssshe laid down on me!"

You manage to force yourself to swallow as nin looks away to laugh.
"You didn't bite her, yes?"
"That issss not the point!"
"You're hissing again."
>>
>>38706631
She just hisses outright at you.
Jin has a spot on the bench down the table, sleepily poking at food.

You catch her by the back of her shirt before she pitches straight into her plate, replacing her on your shell.
"I am sorry, yes? I thought I had you on my neck."
"What would have happened if you had forgot me?!"

Lann pushes some greens around her plate with a fork, then looks up.
"Would you have even woken up all day If I hadn't laid down?"
The snake opens her mouth, but looks doubtful as she raises a finger in complaint.

You press the advantage.
"You do sleep a lot, yes?"
"You are covered in ssleeping people."
"That is fair."

She sighs, her tongue flicking out as she lies on the table.
Nin takes a shot at comfort.
"It is getting cooler. Staying warm is, uh, normal."

The lamia props herself up on her elbows, her face scrunched in concentration.
"Hnn. I wasn't thinking about the time- It is getting close."
"Getting close?"
She nods at you.
"We sleep through the cold. I... might not even have still been active by now if I was not riding you everywhere."

I think we need to look at snakes at the moment.
Do they need to hibernate, or is it just what they do to survive the winter?
>>
>>38707531
Depends, in captivity many can brumate, but often will just slow down a little and stop eating/stop eating as much without becoming fully inactive. There is debated arguments as to how healthy this is to not hibernate them however.
>>
>>38707580
I thought it was necessary for breeding/lifespan?
Though it varies heavily by species and location, right?
>>
>>38707531

Snakes actually bruminate (become less active) rather than hibernate (go totally asleep) during the colder months.

So I'd guess that we're far enough north that the lamias bruminate so intensely as to effectively hibernate, while the cockneys on the Elflands probably just get a little sluggish.
>>
>>38707621
Tropical species do not brumate... Temperate species however (lets assume these are the ones we are talking about), do usually brumate and there is debate of whether or not there system can support them 365 days of a year, some say this contributes to metabolic issues if you don't, others debate this fact. Regardless, usually most temperate snakes stop eating up to two months of winter period and will be a bit less active, usually not significantly so... although they are incredibly hungry afterwards.
>>
>>38707621
>Though it varies heavily by species and location, right?

Yes. For some breeds, that live over a wide territory, it can vary by location. A Northern snake might hibernate or go semi-dormant over the winter, while his Southern cousin will stay active all year.

We'll have to talk to the Tiny Snek to figure out what she'll do if we take her to warmer climates.
>>
You leave your food uneaten.
For the moment, anyway.

You're still hungry.

"Well- What if we kept you under the skull, yes?"
"Huh?"
"It is warm and dark, right? Would that be what you need?"
"I don't think so?"

She coils up, one hand on her chin as she relaxes into her own spiralling tail like a cushion.
"I think it is the cold that puts us to sleep? And we group up so we stay just warm enough."
"And my shell isn't enough?"
"Your shell is too much. If I am not cold enough then I won't be able to- to...."

She snaps her fingers and taps her tail against the table at the same time.
"Hibernate! It is hibernating!"
"Mhm. Then, do you need to?"
"I- I do not know?"

Well you have something approaching a half answer?

Yeah, that doesn't help at all.

You make a dissatisfied noise, slightly muffled by the fact that the instant Ezzy stopped talking, you put more food in your mouth.
You chew your way through the latest piece of dinner, and clear your throat to get some attention.

"We will find out, yes? It seems important."

The snake nods, and tears a piece of your meat free from your plate.
Your eyes narrow.

You will forgive her.

There's a fine idea, perhaps we could start trying to use our natural forge abilities to lessen the physical strain involved in smithing. It's not like Michael gives a damn what spidermom has to say about it either.
