“You have it?” Lakia asks, indicating the runway with a red highlight- something added in the avionics system. She means the landing- you've been handling all of them since your first last night, but she's asked every time since then. To be fair, you don't think she's carrier qualified- you come in at a much heavier sink rate, and you can feel nervousness through the VDNI link every time.

“Yeah.” You respond, lining up. The Wyvern's a few miles out ahead of you- you can only just make it out as the wheels kick open and the landing gear drop and lock into position. He'll still be taxiing as you land, you think, probably just clearing the runway.

You land with a slightly lighter thump than the last couple times, trying to moderate your sink rate more. The Skyfox just doesn't have the same weight- or thrust- as the Wyvern, and once it's on the ground, your speed rapidly drops to a fast taxi.

“Hey, careful!” Lakia says as you taxi- you're distracted by the Wyvern, it's modified, you can tell- a pair of short, flat, booms extend past the exhausts, just below the tails, and there's a pod mounted on top of each the tailfins as well. Plus, while you can't tell from here, you're pretty sure you see a pylon mounted near the wing root. External stores?

“Sorry.” You respond, focusing on the task at hand. You park nearby, in the spot the marshal indicates, and begin powering down. That's become almost routine, and you're done almost before Rex arrives. He's joined by Maman Brigitte, and your girls, all nearby. You smile when you see them standing there, both of the girls in their color-coded dresses, wide brimmed sun hats on their heads. Brigitte is somewhat less colorful, wearing a desert camouflage top and a pair of brown thighighs, just a shade darker than her honey colored skin.

“Who's that?” Lakia asks, curious. You can't see her, but you know she means the girls.

“My daughters.” You say, just trying the phrase on. You can't help but smile, though, as you say it. “And our escort.”

“Nuh uh. Really? You don't look that old!” She says, surprise filtering through the link. “They're not really!”

“Oh. So they're like me!” She says, her voice coming, somewhat strangely, from behind you- it takes a second to re-orient after flight, you've noticed, get used to your real body again. “So when's our next flight?”

You shrug, sitting up front and filling out the last bits of the flight plan information- landing time and actual travel distance- for filing. “Not sure.”

“I hope it's soon!” She says. “I love flying!”

You laugh. “I've noticed.” You say. “I'm sure they'll find you as soon as we're turned around.”

He deposits her in her wheelchair- keeping a hand on one of the handles as she wheels over to talk to the girls. You don't hear the exchange, but Brigitte does some of the talking as the girls give Laika their trademark blank look. She rolls off just as you leave the cockpit, Rex following close behind.

The girls aren't quite so reserved with you- both of them rush over to hug you when you reach the bottom of the ladder. “Papa!” Stasya says as you return their hugs. You shoot a look at Brigitte, who's doing her best to look innocent.

She's not very successful.

Stasya smiles and nods, along with her sister. “Mmhmm!” She says. “And look!” She turns around and lifts her shoulder-length hair up, exposing the four flesh-covered hexagonal covers of her VDNI system. “See?” She asks. “Like yours!”

“Look at mine too!” Lilya says. “These feel so much better.”

“Do they?” you ask, noting that there's a bit of redness along the incision lines- yours are faded and pale, like they're years old, the girl's still look recent. Months old, surely, but newer than yours.

She turns back around, smiling, and nods. “they're so much nicer. No more buzzing!”

“Buzzing?” You ask. “What do you mean?”

“In our ears.” She says. “well, not really, but it sounded like it! With the old ones, there was a buzzing in our ears all the time.”

“Well, I'm glad it's gone.” You say, looking at Brigitte again, noting her look of concern too. “So have you two been to our room yet?”

You shake your head. “Not right now,” You say, patting her on the head when she looks disappointed. “She's probably training.”

“Aww.” Stasya responds. “Will she be done soon?”

You shrug. “No idea. But let's see if we can go look at some of the planes instead!”

She nods, and Lilya holds her arms out, prompting you to laugh and pick her up, letting her ride on your shoulders while Stasya holds your free hand, your helmet set at an awkward angle on her head. It's a bit large for her, and you had to make sure the VDNI connectors were off and wouldn't engage before you handed it to her. Brigitte walks on your other side, quiet.

The four of you make your way to the hangar where you saw the Wyvern landing- there's four aircraft in here, a pair of wyverns, and a pair of smaller fighters with swing wings- they look almost like a sibling of the wyvern, though not quite the same size. They're leaner, more angular- almost dagger-shaped, you think, with a single boom extending rearward from between their jet exhausts and a pair of pylons hanging on their wing gloves. You've never seen them before- and you're about to walk around them when Admiral Longstreet interrupts you.

“C-can we see what's inside?” Stasya asks you- you look over at the admiral, who nods.

“Don't see why not.” He says. “Afterall, they're yours.”

“Both of them are.” The admiral says. Lilya looks over at the other one and rushes to it, Brigitte following dutifully behind to unlock the ladder.

“So it's a hornet?” You ask. He nods. “Basically, same concept. The twenty seven is a lighterweight multirole bird to support the wyvern and fill in where it can't. We're figuring that when they're in service, a carrier will put to sea with three to four squadrons of twenty sevens and one or two of Wyverns, plus their support. Probably three and one, that's still a lot of birds.”

“So they've done away with the limited production thing with the wyvern?” You ask. He nods.

“Yeah. They're still tweaking it, but there's two models, it looks like. One VDNI equipped for witch squadrons, and one without it for the rest of the fleet.” He says. “They're about the same in terms of base performance, but the VDNI-equipped ones will have a beefed up skeleton and airframe to handle increased stress.”

You snort, turning your attention to the newly-arrived Wyvern. “I take it that's because of me?”

He nods. “Yours held up pretty well, and Chance was ecstatic to get their hands on the Wyvern-Merlin.” He grins viciously. “Right up till legal told them that everything that had been done to it was property of the USN.”

You laugh. “They try to pull one over on Samantha?”

“Not really.” He says. “They're not going to kill that golden goose when getting her on as one of their lead R&D people is every aerospace company's dream right now. But it's hard not to want to take a look at what she's done.”

You nod. “Fair. So what's that one?”

The question catches you off guard. “I thought we had longer?” You ask.

“Things have changed. The Polish and krauts are pushing on Minsk hard, and Dick's been bothering us to get you back into it. If you're comfortable, we'll cut your orders and send you back to Torun south as soon as possible. If you're not, we can probably buy another couple days here.”

You consider the request. You're fairly confident- most of your problems have stemmed from having to learn a new airframe, not necessarily the VDNI. While you still make the occasional error, usually it's from wanting to do something outside the VDNI- old habits die hard, and leaving your hands on the grips on your ejection seat is harder than you'd thought.

Still, You're at least as good as you were when you first shipped out, and it's not like all this re learning is hard, everything comes to you almost as soon as you try it.

They both nod and head off with Brigitte following along. You're glad they like her, though you suspect they'll like- or at least accept- anyone you like.

You busy yourself checking the Wyverns while you wait. The newer of the two is the twins- there's no VDNI link on the ejection seats, so you don't do much more than a quick look around it. Externally it's the same as yours- with a pair of pylons fitted, almost at the wing root, and the new pods and booms.

Yours, though, is the same as ever. There's still the same worn spot on the seat where you always adjust your ass forward when you sit down and strap in, and the one belt that's off color from the other, from where it had to be replaced. The console is the same- the whole thing looks untouched, except for the addition of the pair of simple grips on the sides of your ejection seat for your hands.

“Sooo....” Merlin says from directly behind you- you didn't hear her approach and she nearly scares you out of your skin. “Wanna fly it?”
