Fuck yeah, time for the adventures of sky

The Bao Clan's campfire roars loudly in front of you as drink the yellow wine Bao Boqin keeps presenting you and try to extract yourself from Si Xiang's grip on you.

You'd explain that you're too busy to focusing on dealing with your father's convoluted history and everything else in your life right now, but you have no idea if she'd even understand you her Han is so bad.

'So why ARE you looking for your father anyway kid?' Boqin asks as he tears off a haunch of meat. 'Seems to you outta know if anyone where he'd be. I mean nobody else has seen him in two decades.'

I guess we won't see him in about two decades either, if this game of hide-and-seek against the pan-Asian champion keeps up.

Just out of question Sage have you heard/looked into the manga kingdom?

If you don't know it's a military focused series about a fictionalized version of qin shi huang and the events surrounding his asent to the throne of Qin and the unification of china.

It feels like dynasty warriors to me but with a bigger focus on the tactics of war.
>>
>>38606322
Next up kill the Zhuge Liang and Guan Yu look-alikes. Only then will you bring peace to this land. Zhang Fei is cool though.
>>
>>38606486
Not Guan Yu, he's Ao Zhengzhu's father.
>>
>>38606419
Never heard of it, but sounds interesting.
Though it's kinda funny that the protagonist of such a thing is generally regarded as one of the worst and most unredeemably awful tyrants in history.

I mean even the Chinese, who LOVE to go on about how awesome it is for All Under Heaven to be united fully admit that their first emperor was kind of one of the worst they ever had.
>>
>>38606508
You know what must be done anon, even if it hurts.

Seriously though I hate that guy. Only things he does is kill Yan Liang under Cao Cao then dies and loses Jing to Wu. And for some reason this guy is worshiped as a deity. Gotta love folklore.
>>
>>38606516
if you ate thinking of looking in to it, be warned that the first arc is the weakest so far,but once it hits the first war(kingdom vs kindom battle) it gets truly awesome
>>
>>38606516
Quin shi Huang (or Sei as he's called in series. They change names a bit) is kindof the secondary protagonist and he's not a douchetastic tyrant since the manga is on chapter 423 and they are in the midst of a battle during his coronation as Emperor of the Qin nation. So maybe he becomes a tyrant after being emperor or all.

Main protag is a slaveboy (Xin) working his way up the ranks of the military I think he's currently a 10k man commander.

>>38606555
Yeah this guy is right. Also don't watch the anime. It's really bad. they tried to substitute 2d for 3d but the animations are stiff and clunky and sometimes they go back to 2d and its really jarring
>>
>>38606601
fun fact Xin is supposed to be Li Xin whos decendants become emperors of the Tang dynasty
>>
'Not really,' you admit, eventually ceasing to push the woman off you and taking a another bowl of soup and slurping it. 'I didn't even know his NAME until I came out of the mountains where we stayed. He was just "Ba" to me, that was it.'

Boqin frowns.
'You didn't even know your own father's name?'

'No. He never saw anyone and never talked to anyone, so I never knew him as anything other then my dad. All we did mostly was stay in the mountains and practice kungfu day in and day out. Occasionally I went into town to buy rice or potatoes, but that was it.'

'Wow,' he says, raising his eyebrows. 'That's pretty hardcore. Sounds like something he would do though. Your father always seemed like a pretty intense guy truth be told. What changed?'

You frown, finishing your bowl of soup before putting it down.

'I made a mistake. I used my Heaven's Blessing techniques in a fight, and somebody recognized it. A day or so later there was a fight I only saw the aftermath of, and he was gone. Kidnapped. Been looking for him ever since. All that crap that happened at Chengdu, that was all kind of accidental,' you admit with a shrug.

It's been months but it STILL hurts knowing your father was only discovered because of your mistake.

'Huh...,' he says, looking confused.

I still say that Sky shouldn't be feeling guilty about that. The fight happened the very next day. The people who came for Ba must have been in the area already. Someone seeing us use Form Two might have confirmed their suspicions, but they were closing in anyway. It's not Sky's fault.

'....what's wrong?' you ask, curious.

'A couple parts of your story don't add up,' he answers. 'You said the next DAY? That doesn't make much sense. As far as I know everyone assumed Storm Dragon died twenty years ago. If someone was looking for him they had to be either in the area, which means they were close already to finding him or it was just dumb luck.'

You think about this and realize he's right. You weren't thinking at the time but your father was taken TOO quickly, especially since you're almost certain Nine Village Valley has no local wulin factions.

'And kidnapped? By who?' he asks.

'I don't know. By at least four people, I think. I didn't see any faces though,' you admit. Though you refrain from mentioning even their number is based on a half-remembered memory you see in your dreams before getting knocked out.

'Yeah, but who?' he presses. 'I mean, your father wasn't exactly a pushover. He took on practically the collected heads of the entire wulin twenty years ago and won. NOBODY else has ever done anything like that, not that I can ever remember hearing about. Even Dugu Qiubai never did anything like that. And it sounds like he did nothing but train while he was with you as you grew up, so it's not like he got rusty or anything....'

'What are you getting at?' you ask, unsure of what he's dancing around saying openly. Boqin seems like a fairly direct hit normally.

'Well...the only thing I can think of is if he WILLINGLY left. Like they had something over him or coerced him somehow. Maybe they fought but it would take four insanely powerful fighters to hold Storm Dragon off for so long. They'd have to be four of the most powerful xia in the jianghu. I mean, what did anyone have over him, do you know?'

You pause, coming to the only logical conclusion all by itself.

'Nothing....just me,' you say quietly.

'Then I don't think he was actually kidnapped at ALL. He might've left to stop whatever was dogging his heels from coming after you too.'
>>
'I mean,' he goes on, heedless of your distress at his words, 'you haven't mentioned your mother in this. Where was she?'

'Nowhere. I never knew her,' you admit. 'Ba never spoke of her and I never asked. I think I'm more like her then I'm like him though. Hard to say why. Little things I guess...'

'Well, if she was gone before you were born, ever think that maybe whatever he was trying to ensure never caught up to you caught up to her first? Maybe that's why she's not around, eh?'

>it would take four insanely powerful fighters to hold Storm Dragon off for so long. They'd have to be four of the most powerful xia in the jianghu. I mean, what did anyone have over him, do you know?'
We just fought a guy using a Muay Boran that, somehow, resembled way too much our Formless style.

Mom was a foreigner, and a xia. Mom was also supposed to have an arranged marriage...

Could it be that Mom was (also) kidnapped by (those) foreigners?

People from the Joe Foreigner's equivalent of the Wulin?

Am I doing it right?
>>
>>38607821
Maybe? We know she's from the west, in the Kunlun Mountains, while the Flame Doctrine comes from the south-west. So it's possible her sect and the Flame Doctrine were in contact. But if her arranged marriage was to someone from the Flame Doctrine it doesn't make sense that she'd be sent to the central plains to meet her husband. So, barring some future revelation, I don't think that's the case.
>>
>>38607821
more like maybe she had some previous connection to the flame cult (possibly the group she was gonna mary into) and elopng with ba kickstarted their conflict with him
>>
>>38607912
>>38607918
Does the number four have anything to do with the cardinal directions?

As in "it literally took people from all four corners of Tianxia to bust Ba"?
>>
>>38607821
there is also the fact that to the mainstream wulin both stormdragon and the flame cult appeared out of nowhere, wich means there could be other extremely powerfull xia both inside and outside of China
>>
ya know i get the feeling that the end of this story will be sky killing his mom his dad and every one else that fucks with him an then just vanishing.

>>
>>38608071
Tiankong the Lightning Bard
>>
>>38607949
Again, the answer is "maybe?". There is directional symbolism in Chinese folklore, yeah, but nothing that would specifically tie it to Ba. The only thing that comes to mind is the five sacred animals, if you assume that Ba being the "storm dragon" represents the Yellow Dragon of the Center. But that feels like a reach, there hasn't been any mention of him having four counterparts representing the other animals (Blue Dragon of the East, Black Tortoise of the North, White Tiger of the West and Red Bird of the South). So I don't think that's the case.
>>
>>38608134
But the quest is indeed divided in 5 books named after the elements.
>>
>>38608156
Yeah, but that theme is everywhere in Chinese and Chinese-inspired fiction, it doesn't mean that the five animals are going to be used as symbolism.
>>
>>38608134
actually i think the tortoise was shown in the side story of how sky's parents meet the school brother who could turn his skin into iron.
>>

>The Azure Dragon of the East represents Wood, the Vermilion Bird of the South represents Fire, the White Tiger of the West represents Metal, and the Black Turtle (or Dark Warrior) of the North represents Water.
Not surprising that the Southeners here are using fire-based attacks, right?

Does the Azure Dragon have anything to do with Ao Zhengzhu or her father? They are in the East and do wear blue, right?
>>
>>38608340
Nah, that's probably separate symbolism. Everyone uses dragons to represent themselves in China if they're powerful enough to get away with it. Ao Guang, being challenger to the imperial throne, is definitely going to call himself that. And they've got a water theme, that probably explains the blue. Like I said, I don't think that's where this is going.
>>
'I'm...going to go get some sleep...,' you say, finishing the last half of your soup bowl.

It's still spicy as hell but you notice it less now as you extract yourself from Si Xiang, and make your way to the empty hut where you were shown you'll be resting earlier.

You feel...numb.
This is all just too much to deal with sometimes. How can you find your Ba when nothing about his dissppearance makes any sense? How do you find a missing man that everyone assumed was dead?

How do you deal with knowing it's all your fault in the first place?

You turn and flop limply onto the cot, resting an arm over your eyes.

This was all so much easier when you were constantly dealing with other people's petty problems and rivalries, when you had an actual GOAL to move forward to then just some vague notion of searching for someone who might not even want to be found.

'I miss Lei and his drinking,' you say to no one.

'I miss Tang Zhu and her skinny spider legs. I miss Zhengzhu and her weird mood swings. I miss that guy, what's his name, who always followed her around. I miss Honglan and her corny innuendos. I even miss that shitty monk.'

'I don't WANT to be alone anymore....,' you finally admit.

So as someone who knows jack about chinese history what language does sky speak? He said Han before but is that closer to Mandarin or Cantonese, or is there no modern equivalent?
>>
>>38620847
He probably speaks in Mandarin, since usually referred to as the Common language. Wouldn't be surprised if his father taught him Cantonese, though.
>>
>>38621162
Okay because I was listening to both the mandarin and cantonese versions of be a man and was wondering which would fit better

Mandarin
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6IYt2qMj1A

Cantonese
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SLJJc8siyU
>>
>>38621319
Well, I'd go with the Mandarin.

Of course, seeing as how I'm only familiar with Mandarin, my opinion is probably biased.
>>
>>38620847
>>38621479
Most of the characters are speaking Mandarin, which is the dominant language of the Han ethnicity and has been since there was a "B" from of the "CE" calender. It's called "Mandarin" because the early English used that word for a LOT of Chinese shit; scholar officials were called "Mandarins" for example.

The actual word for it is "officials language" since pretty much the every government since the Qin Dynasty used it as their official tongue and it became the lingua franca of the region by default.

Cantonese on the other hand is an extremely regional dialect; in modern days it seems quite common because English-speaking countries and foreigners in general had the majority of their contact with the Chinese in Hong Kong, which is a Cantonese-speaking region.

Currently in the rough era WHQ portrays there actually aren't even that many Han IN the Guangdong region and Canton in general, and it's all jungles and sparsely populated fishing villages.

The region only became massively urbanized after westerners got involved basically and a slow migration of Han went south where their dialect drifted and began to more resemble that of the tribal folk found there, with more hard consonants.
>>
>>38623740
Okay thanks.

On an unrelated thought what would you suggest for an intro to what wulin is? This quest has got me curious and was wondering if there was a good movie that could be considered a quintessential wulin film.
>>
>>38624790
The genre is wuxia, anon. Wulin is the soceity.
