"Whatever you came here for, you can forget it."
The lady glares at you. Her will is unwavering, and her guards crowd around her.

You are Jack Albator, trained negotiator, and if not that at least you're a good shot. You've come to this strange country, Konditorei, in order to find the summoner of a hero who was stranded in your country. You don't have very long to find that summoner, the hero is gravely ill and is expected to only last a few more day.
So, you did what any self-respecting scout would do and went to a backwater village in the middle of no-where and asked the village elder. Hey, you got to start somewhere, right?

It seems this village is fighting misfortunes of its own. Many of them were kidnapped recently during a local festival. With no evidence of their disappearance except for a single magic circle which mysteriously appeared in the town square.
A week after she reported it to the authorities, a small unit of guards came by to arrest her. She's been hiding with what few villagers are left ever since.
As much as you want to shed tears for her, you have your own problems to worry about. She's not being the most cooperative, but you don't really blame her for it.

"So" She continues, "I know you're not merchants during this time of the year. I can't report you to the castle, so both of us are outlaws. You can stay the night, but by morning you need to pack up and leave to wherever you're going and keep me out of this."

"Lady. I'm not here to argue. I'm here to save someone's life."

"Even if I believed you, I don't know why you think I could help."

>"I want to know where the princess of this country is. It's urgent. "
>"Don't believe me? Let me show you for yourself."
>"I want to know how I could be recognized as a merchant caravan around here."
>"I need help finding my way around the countryside."

"Lady, I'm sorry yer village is in hard times, but-"

Then a thought hits you.
"-but if you want to know how you can help. I can show ye what's at stake."

She looks at you, incredulously.
"What did you do? Kidnap my handmaiden? It's been ten minutes and I haven't heard back from her."
"No no, Lady. Let me show ye."

-

Yep, the sadwagon is as it's always been. Yuuki looks increasingly sad, Louise and Keiko have taken over headrag duty.

Nearby, Akiko is getting information herself from the girl who was trying to cross the street earlier. The handmaiden wrings her dress in hand as Akiko tries everything she can to appear as nonthreatening as possible. Must be hard when she's wearing a sword on her waist.

"Here." You say to the lady, who is staying a few steps behind you with her guards in front. "This is the life at stake."

You whip the moist cloth off of the head of the unconscious hero. The medicine is working, but her cheeks are starting to match her lip tone again.
"Stand back." The lady orders both you and her guards.

Gently she leans forward, and lays a glowing hand onto the head of the ill-struck girl.
Is that.. barrier magic? You saw Lyn do something almost identical before you left.

She frowns and steps away.
"She's a summoned hero."
"Aye."
She looks toward you, "So that means..."

>"Nope, just someone who found a sick hero."
>"I know a few heroes, yar."
>"Aye. In the flesh."

"Aye." You say, with a slight smile, "In the flesh."

She blinks, before slowly looking toward the other members of your group.

Cody gently smiles at her, nodding. Louise smiles real big and waves in her direction.
Yuuki doesn't say or do much, but she does halfheartedly put her hand up.

"Uh.. huh." The lady seems even more confused now than before.

"Aye, this one here has been away from her summoner for too long. She's wasting away."
She looks back toward you, "That summoner, who is it?"
"Well, Aye'm in Konditorei. Ye can probably guess by yerself who it is."

She stops for a second as her face blanks. Slowly she tilts her head down.
"No one has seen anyone from the royal family in years. So-"
"Aye already know that. I'm interested in directions, I'm in a land I've never been in with a crew who is suspicious already."

Gently, below her hair, is she smiling?
"Yes... I understand. Come. I might have something that could help."

She wasn't kidding.
Spread across a table is a map of the entire region, lines and pencil sketches mark the features. Clearly listing trade routes, where caravans usually approach at what time of the year, good rest destinations.
What is most important right now is a finely-drawn line that leads from the village you're at all the way to the castle.

"A-are you really sure about this!? You're giving information to foreign invaders!" One of the guards pipes up.
She waves her off, instead approaching you.

With her hand, she grips onto your shoulder, hard.
"I'm not doing this because I trust in you, or because I like our kingdom. I'm doing this because that girl you have is Konditorei's hero. OUR hero."

She glares at you coldly, "I don't know who any of you are. But if my country needs anything right now, it's someone to have faith in."

"Aye, You can count on me."
"I wasn't talking about you." She glances out the window, at the wagon with the sick hero on it.

"Doesn't change what I said lass. When Jack says ye can count on him, you can believe mah word."

On a side not, why hasn't the royal family been seen? How long they be out of the public eye?

Tell her about the other disappearances, that wherever they are they are probably safe, and that we're on the case.

You smile at her.
"Doesn't change what I said, Lass. When Jack says ye can count on him, ye can believe my word."

Her ears twitch.
"Charming lad, you are. I wish I could feel the happiness to be charmed."

"Let me take a burden off ye shoulders, the village disappearing thing has happened all around the continent."
She stares, "And..?"
"And.. I know they're out there somewhere. I'm gonna bring them back."

She thinks about what you said for a minute,
"Is that your word?"
"That's my word."

Slowly, she stands up before walking over and hugging you.
"I was worried for a while, but I guess not everyone is out to get me."

"Yar, sometimes I used to feel the same way myself."

Your fingers gently brush against her ears. Round ears, that's a new one.
She twitches before stepping back, a light blush across her face.

"I'm going to hold you to your word, whoever you are."
"Jack." You smile, "Just call me Jack."

"Jack.." She crosses her arms. "You're not the kind of help I wanted, but you'll do"

Ha, that's as much of a compliment if you ever heard one.

Hey everyone, sorry for cutting this one a bit short. I need to rest and the end of the week is wearing me down.

Thanks for everyone who participated. Sorry technical issues cut this thread short, it'll get better next week, I promise!

If everyone wants, I could try to run another day sometime extra to make up for how short these threads have been. Tell me what you think

Until then, thanks for playing!

Well hey. We got a compliment and we haven't even saved the little hero yet.

This is already turning out better than the cat nation!

sure, as long as you can take it

I certainly wouldn't be against an extra day. Even if it's another small thread, I'd take 3 of them a week vs 2 a week

Thanks for running Announcer!
