The sudden movement makes you realize just how long you’ve been sitting there – her warmth changes, the step of her heart lurching forwards slightly, as though coming out of a long, deep sleep. You can’t help but think of her stare as a little catlike.

“I was thinking…” You pause, feeling a little exposed suddenly, like a jutting lump of bone. If she notices, she doesn’t show it. “What do you want to do, after this? I mean, after this whole thing with the gangs and Creeper and everything?”

She furrows her brow, eyes lowering, and for a moment you’re not sure what her expression says. There’s something strange and bitter about it, like the face you used to make when you took a gulp of cough medicine.

“I… I don’t know.” She says, eventually. “I haven’t thought about it for a while.”

The tentative silence that follows makes you wonder whether she hasn’t thought about it for a while, or whether she’s avoided thinking about it for a while.

That seems to make her think about it. As it sinks through, you ask her one of the questions you’d had on your mind since you learned about her quest:

She almost flinches. You feel her muscles tighten, just for a second, under her skin. The green of her eyes recedes, dropping toward her lap, and for a moment you think she almost looks sorry about something, like you’ve uncovered something raw and bleating and horribly shameful. Half of you wants to take it back, to tell her it’s not important, but the other half of you is too tensed up to actually do it.

“I was going to kill him.” She says, as though repeating the words from a script. “And then I was going to throw myself into a blast furnace.”

You remember the look in her eyes when you first met her – that immense, crushing expanse, void of all but the faintest scraps of hope.

Doing it while climbing your way up toward one of Wu’s windows is a little harder, but the surfaces offer few difficulties, and you soon find yourself hanging just beneath a window frame. The angle prevents you from seeing exactly what the place looks like inside, but you can smell a distinct lack of traditional furniture, so you’re thinking kitchen or bathroom.

Laura nudges you, pointing upward, and wriggles very slightly out of your grasp. You hold on tighter for a second, a little afraid that you’ll somehow end up seeing her plummet down to the pavement below (you know it wouldn’t kill her, but it’s gotta really hurt), but eventually you loosen your hold enough that she can pull herself up onto your shoulders (you have to force yourself to keep your eyes closed at one point) before grasping the bottom of the frame and heaving herself up.

You hear a low, almost inaudible whine as her claws pass through both the glass and its metal framing, removing the lock. She eases the window open and darts inside, her feet barely making a sound as she lands.

You follow behind her. You’re not as quiet, but you’re not too loud either, and you have the benefit of being invisible. People generally don’t look up, and those that do will brush off mostly anything if there’s nothing for their eyes to immediately latch on to. If there’s one thing you really know, it’s the ins-and-outs of being invisible.

It’s a bathroom. A shower hangs over the bathtub in one corner. Laura crouches nearby a sink, the tendons stretched tight in her back. Lights are off, casting the whole place in mottled blacks and greys.

You can hear the guy in the next room over.

As far I as I'm aware, Kimura has been shown to be invulnerable to physical harm. She can be tossed around and overpowered, but you can't break her skin, and she almost entirely nullifies the force that should liquify her innards.

I'm sure someone like, say, Molecule Man or Toyo Harada (never doubt the Harada) could tear her apart, but blunt trauma is never going to damage her.

You creep across the tiled floor, out into the thin hallway that connects the bathroom to the rest of the apartment. Light emanates from one of the doors up ahead, and you think you hear the guy sitting down, his back groaning against the shape of a big, overstuffed sofa. You tap your foot quietly, and watch the concentric bursts of stark, monochrome information spread outward, sketching out an internal image of the apartment.

Aside from the bathroom, there are five rooms. One is clearly a living space, and beside it is a small kitchen. You can ‘see’ the manager relaxing in the latter. Upstairs there’s a small little niche of a room (guest room, maybe), and two that seem pretty much laid out as bedrooms. A king in one, a queen in the other.

You can hear someone snoring on the bigger bed. Long, fitful breaths, only an inch into the realm of slumber.
