You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

Your legs dangle down over the street below. You’re sitting on top of a roof in Chinatown, sharing a coat with a girl. Above, the night seems to shift and churn in monumental slowness, a thick blanket of heavy, dark clouds crawling across the sky. You can just about make out the curve of the moon behind them.

Laura watches the restaurant on the opposite side of the street with an air of quiet diligence, her eyes barely moving. You’re supposed to be doing the same, but you’re – quite understandably, you’d say – a little distracted. Her closeness dominates your senses. Every time you settle into a comfortable rhythm, you find yourself drifting toward her, your perceptions shifting subtly inward, aligning themselves to her warmth, to the flow of blood through her veins. Then you realize what you’re doing, and you remind yourself to stay focused, and the process repeats itself.

The night deepens. People begin to depart from Uncle Wu’s friendly Chinese eatery (and, apparently, part time kidnapping operation? Kidnapping base? Something along those lines), and less and less customers stop by to replenish their numbers. The streets begin to thin out – there are still people everywhere, but their collective hubbub goes from deafening to barely notable.

You feel like you should say something while you’re up here.

Basically "Have you had the chance to keep looking for your dad? Want to do that after we deal with this gang war thing?" Because JJ doesn't let a little thing like gang war be the last on his to-do list.

“Hey…”

Laura blinks, her focus shattered, and glances up at you. The sudden movement makes you realize just how long you’ve been sitting there – her warmth changes, the step of her heart lurching forwards slightly, as though coming out of a long, deep sleep. You can’t help but think of her stare as a little catlike.

“I was thinking…” You pause, feeling a little exposed suddenly, like a jutting lump of bone. If she notices, she doesn’t show it. “What do you want to do, after this? I mean, after this whole thing with the gangs and Creeper and everything?”

She furrows her brow, eyes lowering, and for a moment you’re not sure what her expression says. There’s something strange and bitter about it, like the face you used to make when you took a gulp of cough medicine.

“I… I don’t know.” She says, eventually. “I haven’t thought about it for a while.”

The tentative silence that follows makes you wonder whether she hasn’t thought about it for a while, or whether she’s avoided thinking about it for a while.

Unnerved a little by the quiet, and feeling a little like you’ve plucked at an exposed nerve, you try to fill the silence:

“What about… what about your…” You’re not sure what the etiquette here is, exactly. You don’t want to say ‘original’, or ‘father’, or anything like that. They seem kinda presumptuous. “…I guess he’d be your twin, right? You still want to track him down?”

She thinks about it. Her breath rises and falls in slow, measured heaves, and for a moment it’s almost all you’re aware of.

“I have thought about him.” Her voice shakes you back to reality. “But it’s…” She trails off, her jaw still working minutely, as though she’s sounding things out in her heard. “…it’s been… less and less.”

>[X] Phantom.
>[X] Why?

You guess you kinda understand. Since you started living in the Scar, you’ve felt almost like time has stopped, or slowed to treacle. The world outside barely seems to exist when you’re there – if you didn’t know better, you’d think you could just curl up down in the station and outlast it all. Creeper, the Maggia, the Facility, all of it. The concerns of the universe at large seem to freeze in place and dwindle away behind the curtain of the ruins, as though they lose track of you somehow.

It’s a strange place.

“I could ask the Phantom about it.” You offer. “She’d probably help, I think.”

A frown passes over Laura’s features, short-lived and barely perceptible.

“She knows too much already.” She says, a quiet firmness to her tone.

“Right, okay.” You say that, but you’re not quite ready to back off. “She’s nice, though. She’d probably understand where you’re coming from, if you told her about it.”

“Why do you think that?”

“I did, didn’t I?”

That seems to make her think about it. As it sinks through, you ask her one of the questions you’d had on your mind since you learned about her quest:

“Why’re you looking for the guy, anyhow?”

She almost flinches. You feel her muscles tighten, just for a second, under her skin. The green of her eyes recedes, dropping toward her lap, and for a moment you think she almost looks sorry about something, like you’ve uncovered something raw and bleating and horribly shameful. Half of you wants to take it back, to tell her it’s not important, but the other half of you is too tensed up to actually do it.

“I was going to kill him.” She says, as though repeating the words from a script. “And then I was going to throw myself into a blast furnace.”

Oh, right.

You remember the look in her eyes when you first met her – that immense, crushing expanse, void of all but the faintest scraps of hope.

Of course.

The silence is deafening. To the eye, Laura is utterly still, but you can feel the tension in the air, feel the tiny intricacies of her body as they shift and squirm uncomfortably.

You don’t really know what to say, so you don’t say anything. Slowly, you wrap your arms around her, surrounding her in your warmth. It’s a little awkward – she’s already in the same coat as you, so you sort of end up with your arms folded clumsily against her, probably hugging more of your coat than Laura herself. She seems to get the message, though.

She lets her weight relax against you. The tension doesn’t drain away immediately – you get the impression that pressure had been building behind that particular bulkhead for some time – but she at least lets herself breathe naturally once again. You stay like that for a moment before she swallows heavily, clearing her throat.

“I’m not going to do that anymore.” She says. “Just clarifying.”

“Good.” What else are you supposed to say? ‘Cool?’ ‘Probably wasn’t the best idea?’ Good just about covers it, you think. “…You know you don’t have to be”–

“Something’s happening.” She states, cutting you off, and you follow her gaze down to Uncle Wu’s, where the lights have flickered off.

She was still watching the restaurant while you were having your little heart-to-heart?”

A trio of college-aged kids you recognize as waiters file their way out, lingering a little while before dispersing. The chef follows soon after.

You don’t see anyone else, though.

You wait, your breath thrumming in your chest. You still get nervous before this stuff, even after all you’ve been through. The minutes drag by, no sign of the manager in sight, and for a moment you entertain the thought that he left via a back exit and you’ve lost him.

Then a light flicks on in the building above, and you almost slap yourself.

He lives above his restaurant. Duh.

You feel really dumb.

“I feel really dumb. These guys almost always live above their”– You pause, to meditate upon your lameness. “Well, whatever. Doesn’t matter.”

You slip out of sight, the two of you descending along the side of the wall. Holding Laura’s hand, you flitter through the sparse crowds that move up and down Chinatown at this hour, making your way toward Uncle Wu’s (and, presumably, Uncle Wu).

“Guess we should be quiet…” You say.

Laura simply nods, as if to indicate that the quietening has already begun, and you’re doing it wrong.

Whoops?

Placing a scaly palm down upon Wu’s dark green paintjob, you heave yourself up, a tiny static tingle passing along your fingers as you adhere to the wooden exterior of the restaurant. Cradling Laura in one arm is easy (seriously, she’s tiny. You bet her ‘dad’ or ‘brother’ or whatever is a total manlet). Doing it while climbing your way up toward one of Wu’s windows is a little harder, but the surfaces offer few difficulties, and you soon find yourself hanging just beneath a window frame. The angle prevents you from seeing exactly what the place looks like inside, but you can smell a distinct lack of traditional furniture, so you’re thinking kitchen or bathroom.

Nope. not how her powers work.
She shifts density within her body. As such, it cant all be invulnerable at the same time.

pfffft
>>
>>38430505
True, but if that skin is invulnerable and essentially acts as contiguous armor to instantly distribute and transfer the force of that blow then it's a lot harder to hurt that soft tissue. The problem we're having is the efficiency of energy transfer through a arrive that works on comicbook-logic.
>>
>>38430567
>(seriously, she’s tiny. You bet her ‘dad’ or ‘brother’ or whatever is a total manlet).
kek
>>
>>38430573

Her powers work however Crusty says they work. If he says a maximized Force Blast wouldn't be enough to kill her, dem's the breaks.
>>
>>38430638
Doesn't she have handwavium bones or something?
>>
>>38430638
So, we just have to hit her twice then.
>>
>(2/2)

Laura nudges you, pointing upward, and wriggles very slightly out of your grasp. You hold on tighter for a second, a little afraid that you’ll somehow end up seeing her plummet down to the pavement below (you know it wouldn’t kill her, but it’s gotta really hurt), but eventually you loosen your hold enough that she can pull herself up onto your shoulders (you have to force yourself to keep your eyes closed at one point) before grasping the bottom of the frame and heaving herself up.

SNIKT!

You hear a low, almost inaudible whine as her claws pass through both the glass and its metal framing, removing the lock. She eases the window open and darts inside, her feet barely making a sound as she lands.

You follow behind her. You’re not as quiet, but you’re not too loud either, and you have the benefit of being invisible. People generally don’t look up, and those that do will brush off mostly anything if there’s nothing for their eyes to immediately latch on to. If there’s one thing you really know, it’s the ins-and-outs of being invisible.

It’s a bathroom. A shower hangs over the bathtub in one corner. Laura crouches nearby a sink, the tendons stretched tight in her back. Lights are off, casting the whole place in mottled blacks and greys.

You can hear the guy in the next room over.

Dunno.

As far I as I'm aware, Kimura has been shown to be invulnerable to physical harm. She can be tossed around and overpowered, but you can't break her skin, and she almost entirely nullifies the force that should liquify her innards.

I'm sure someone like, say, Molecule Man or Toyo Harada (never doubt the Harada) could tear her apart, but blunt trauma is never going to damage her.

>[X] Creep it, sense the place up.

You hold out your hand for Laura, and the two of you vanish once more.

You creep across the tiled floor, out into the thin hallway that connects the bathroom to the rest of the apartment. Light emanates from one of the doors up ahead, and you think you hear the guy sitting down, his back groaning against the shape of a big, overstuffed sofa. You tap your foot quietly, and watch the concentric bursts of stark, monochrome information spread outward, sketching out an internal image of the apartment.

Aside from the bathroom, there are five rooms. One is clearly a living space, and beside it is a small kitchen. You can ‘see’ the manager relaxing in the latter. Upstairs there’s a small little niche of a room (guest room, maybe), and two that seem pretty much laid out as bedrooms. A king in one, a queen in the other.

You can hear someone snoring on the bigger bed. Long, fitful breaths, only an inch into the realm of slumber.

He’s not alone in here.

Comic book science anon. Except for a handful of very narrowly defined ways, just think of her as invincible to mundane damage. Otherwise we could just wail on her head with a moderately sturdy club until her brain slammed into her cranium enough to kill her. Or just shoot her in the head and let the force transfer and secondary trauma do its work.

Can't we just kill her via old fashioned physics? Have her copy that scene from Taken where he talked into the phone via the radio, except we do that into a highly enclosed space, and rig a pressure bomb in it. The massive pressure gradiant WILL wreck your brain, armor or no.

Out of the three tank crew deaths experienced by America in recent years, one was by an IED causing a massive fatal TBI.

If it can kill a tank crew it can kill her.
>>
>>38431572
>Point 1 - the dislocation of joints.
I've thought about this one before since it should be possible, but Kimi's a very high level CQC specialist so I'm pretty sure no one's ever pulled it off... So maybe.

>Point two - Massive trauma to her soft tissue.
That one we know doesn't work since she's survived gun shots and...look, Luara's claws (like Logan's) have been sharpened to as close to mono-molecular blades as to being functionally the same. She can't with a full force stab or slash cause any soft tissue damage to Kimi or break any of her bones. That means the at force of the attack is incredibly dispersed by her skin or outright negated (...like some sort of vibranium-like bootleg?). Probably the former since I have no idea how we'd deal with the latter.

>[X] 3 20’s
>3 20’s

Well, you guess you have to keep the guy quiet.

Luckily, that doesn’t look like it’ll be hard. Uncle Wu, when he comes into view, is a squat, portly man in his late forties, the hair atop his head beginning to grow thin. He slumps down against his sofa as if he’s about to turn around, wrap his meaty arms around one of the seats, and make sweet love to it. Hard day’s work, you guess. All that kidnapping and cooking noodles and shit.

You remove your gloves and stalk your way across the floorboards. He neither sees nor hears you coming, and he nearly cakes his pants when you slam his head back against the back of the sofa, your palm closing around his mouth. He thrashes, eyes bulging wildly, full of specific kind of panic you’ve come to recognize as the terror of being assaulting by an invisible attacker. A low, muffled scream beats at your palm, but you hold on tight.

Nobody’s going to hear him until you want them to.

Laura detaches from grasp, flickering into vision, and his eyes wheel toward her. One SNIKT later and he has a really horrifically insanely sharp blade pressed up against his throat.

That quietens him down somewhat.

“Alicia Manfredi.” You growl, still invisible. “Where is she?”

His eyes dart along the length of the apartment, searching for some sign of you. None appears.

“Speak quietly.” Adds Laura.

You remove your hand, and, for the most part, he takes her advice.

“…Y-you won’t kill me.” He says, exceptionally well-spoken considering his circumstances. “You’re superheroes, right? You don’t kill people.”

>You’re superheroes, right?
>>
>(2/2)

A hungry, sibilant hiss unwinds its way up your throat, passing like a knife along your lips. You can smell the blood in his veins, his meat. He smells tender.

You try to put it aside, to focus on being angry rather than hungry. It travels up through you like a dark, hot warmth, a heat without flame that bulges along your intestines and crawls up your throat and splits into two sharp, hot motes of neural lightning, pressing urgently against the curve of your skill.

“Does this feel like a superhero thing?” You turn visible, and see his eyes wide. “Do you feel safe?”

Apparently not.

“It’s… she’s far away from here by now, she”–

He flinches, a dark, red slither of blood flushing along his neck, Laura’s claw biting just very slightly against his skin.

“Where are the Triads keeping her?” She says, her tone entirely, unnervingly flat.

“N-not the Triads!” He sputters, desperately trying to push himself further into the sofa, away from the blade at his throat. “The Russians! They paid to well to say no! I-it was a one-time thing, a way out! Please, Mr. Negative cannot know, he’d”–

“Where?”

“They took her to Chaucer Street! It’s in the Bronx, near the waterside!” He practically rasps it out. “The new woman, the burned thing, she’s based somewhere near there! Please”–

“Quiet.” You say, mostly because you’re starting to get a bit of a migraine.

You feel like your skull is folding outward, spiraling off into two distant points. Front of your head feels kinda heavy.

Laura’s giving you a sort of worried look.

“He could be lying.” She says, not taking her eyes off you. “I am trained in enhanced interrogation. I could verify what he has told us.”

Enhanced interrogation. That means torture, right?

>JJ’s senses become attuned to the fine details of human locomotion. He becomes capable of accurately predicting a person’s mood and immediate actions based on the subtle flexes and tensions of their physiology. In some cases this ability can reveal more than just mood, and stops just short of reading another person’s mind.

I don't know if there's anyone who still buys into the whole idea of buying powers related to adapting to relevant situations (I don't), but Kinesics would be pretty damn handy in situations like these.

>[X] Ask.
>[X] Taze.

“New woman?” You ask, the words coming out serrated and harsh, as though cut into blades by your teeth. “Who is she?”

“S-some burned-up bitch from Russia!” He replies, immediately. You vaguely remember someone like that at the White Rose Gala – a blonde woman with extensive scar tissue. She didn’t seem like she had superpowers or anything, though. “Word is Chameleon pissed off someone over in Moscow, she’s here to whip the local Bratva into shape. S-she’s a soldier, or a vet, or… or… I don’t know, something.”

“Alright, then.” That’s enough. “All we needed to know. You need to know that I can smell you near enough six miles away”– an exaggeration, but you’re betting it doesn’t seem like one right now, not to him –“and my friend can probably double that. If you tell anyone about this – anyone – I swear to God we’ll find you, and then we’ll draw straws on whether we hand you over to Manfredi or Negative. You get that?”

He nods hurriedly, his eyes wet with latent tears.

“Yes! Y-yes, I get! I get it!”

“Good.” You say.

You let a current build along your arm, lashing out through him. He rears up, thrashing spastically against the sofa, and goes prone. Should be out for a while.

You take the opportunity to pat him down for a phone, promptly crushing it between your talons. The landline phone sitting nearby meets a similar fate.

Laura’s still staring.

Why is Laura starring and who else is in the house?

She's staring because JJ just sprouted horns.

Crusty had a vote awhile back to just bundle in the Horns extrapolative into the existing Claws and Fangs. That's what all that text about pulses and heaviness in JJ's forehead was talking about, and why Laura is looking at him like he has three heads.

Well, what a curveball. Russians.

Creeper always told you he liked Russians. They had this thing, this stubbornness-ish thing, he liked (ish, because you’re not sure he liked stubbornness in anyone else). He saw them as sort of similar to him, somehow – ‘protectors of the faith’, he called them, though you can’t imagine what kind of faith Creeper of all people would protect. As far as you can tell, he was a staunch worshipper of Mammon, his trust lying primarily in money, drugs, and blood. Things he could control, things he could control people with.

You know what could be really useful at a time like this?

Your nifty Moon Phone.

You make like a good Moon Boy and whip out your Moon Phone (you’ll have moonarangs, next. Lunarags?), bringing up the weird GPS equivalent ‘Mr. Kamar’ has installed. Your breath catches in your throat – by the time you’ve typed in “CHAUCER STR” it’s already giving you suggested locations.

One of them is a shipping complex apparently owned by the Bratva.

Jesus Christ, Moon Knight.

“Well, I guess we know where she is…”

Stowing your phone away, you notice that Laura is still staring. You pat experimentally at your chin.

“What’s up?” You slip your gloves back on and trace your finger over your eyebrows. Nothing weird going on there. “Something on my face?”

She shakes her head slowly, and steps in closer.

“Your head.”

“Wha”–

She reaches up with one tiny, delicate hand, and you feel nerves flashing along the length of something you don’t recognize. She pulls, and your head jerks forward slightly.

“What the hell!?” You hiss it out as quietly as you can, reaching up to feel at your head.

You have a pair of… growths… curving back along your scalp, protruding near the front of your skull before arching along the turn of its dome, flicking upwards slightly near the end. They feel sort of bony, almost like gnarled oak, tiny protrusions prodding occasionally from intermittent points across their length, like thorns.

Thorns. Thorns.

Horns.

You have horns.

ANIMAL AFFINITY
JJ develops the ability to communicate with and command fauna.
Level 1: JJ may understand the basic gist of what an animal is conveying. He may suggest actions but not compel them.
Level 2: JJ may entirely understand ‘animal-speak’. Smaller land bound animals almost automatically trust him and are more suggestible.
Level 3: JJ may sense nearby wildlife. Airborne animals and large land bound animals almost automatically trust him and are more suggestible. JJ may emit a loud noise that acts as a ‘beacon’ to chosen creatures.
Level 4: JJ may unleash a roar almost guaranteed to cow most animals, including humans. Insects now automatically trust him and are more suggestible.
Level 5: JJ may piggyback the senses of a chosen creature and compel it from a distance.

Probably because most of the extrapolatives connected to Agility and Senses are absolutely fantastic. The stealth ones are decent enough, but none of them have really grabbed me in the same way.

As for me, I'd like to boost Taser Hands to rank 2 and Optic Force Blasts to at least Rank 3--though I'd love to max it, given that it's by far our strongest ability in terms of destructive potential, and as time goes on we're probably going to need that in order to protect the people we care about from the likes of Sentinels or Typhon.

Just for reference:

>Level 3: At this level, JJ’s force beams can smash reinforced materials and cause significant damage to bones and deep tissue. The beam can be widened to a meter. If shot in standard or lower width, the beams may change direction at one point in their flight.

This. Think back on how many times the taser has come in handy for us. Now imagine it strong enough to cook bacon in the palm of your hand.

I don't believe our current bullet avoidance capabilities are going to do well enough. Those gunmen we escaped a while ago had no idea of our capabilities (they'll know next time), and a single shot can still fuck JJ up easily. And since JJ's best defense is his ability to avoid hits, I would always want it higher.

Why not dodge better?

Like what?

I cannot imagine a series of events that would result in JJ breaking up with or otherwise abandoning Laura, short of mind control.

Yeah, no.
>>
>>38435725
The point about Subdermal is you can't dodge all the time. That's why armor is there, for when you DO get hit.

I'd vote for JJ to kill himself.

Seriously though guys, both are worth getting. I'd rather take both armor for when we do inevitably get hit and shadow field to let us avoid getting hit in circumstances where we would have without it.

>>38435776

Only two of those things needs two points.

I meant those 2 points you're hung up on can put into other powers, not necessarily pay for powers just by themselves

I don't hate shadowfield, its just on the bottom of the totem pole for me
>>
>>38435863

I'd like better dodging, personally.

I have asked Crusty on his Ask.fm exactly how much Shadow Field would buff dodging, so we can get an answer there.
>>
>>38435821
>>38435764

if CJ says it can stop bullets (and he did) then it can stop bullets
>>
>>38435931

I don't doubt it can stop bullets, but it doesn't make JJ bulletproof. More like, it just makes it much more difficult for bullets to fully penetrate his skin/muscle. Which is admittedly pretty great, but I still think I'd like to buff both his ability to take and avoid damage in roughly equal measure.
>>
>>38435931
>it's capable of stopping bullets therefore we don't need to worry
Kevlar can stop bullets too, it doesn't mean the wearer is bulletproof.
>>
>>38435992
its his fucking skin

last time I checked JJ is covered in that shit
>>
>>38435992
Don't know if it was already mentioned but it would probably only work well with low caliber rounds.
>>
>>38436018
For fucks sake, do you know what kevlar is? It doesn't matter if your whole body is covered with it, it isn't bulletproof. It can stop bullets. Emphasis on the "can".
>>
>>38436079
>>38436049
Level 5: The biowave under JJ’s skin is now roughly as strong as Kevlar, and can stop bullets – even, for short periods, those of heavier calibre or anti-armour design – from fully penetrating his skin.
>>
one more level in claws and fangs and one more level in taser hands, then we can get warp-spasm
>>
>>38436122
Alright, still think it's expensive for what it is though.

We picked the armor that didn't fuck with stealth

because synergy
>>
>>38435905
I dont see how we can conceivabley get better at dodging at this point. We can fly, turn invisible, climb walls, move faster then a normal person can react, echolocate, predict bullet paths, read body language...
Short of...The P Word, I think we're good. We dont have a problem running away from things, we have a problem taking care of situations we cant run away from. Hence the Offensive powers.

I've read the pastebin too. That still doesn't make JJ bulletproof, which is all I'm saying.

I still want it for surprises, a safety net, and incase some asshole throws a frag grenade or two near us.
>>
>>38436122
It may be always on and stealthy, but shit, is it expensive.
