Interlude: The Persian Club, Indigo Plateau, Kanto (Last Night)

Joseph Bryant was having the time of his life. The music, the drinks, the girls, it all came together to make a truly amazing night. He had no idea what he’d done to make Rocket Industries so interested in him, but they certainly knew how to get his attention.

“Excuse me,” A low, feminine voice whispered in his ear. “Are you Joseph?”

Joseph turned around to see a tall, voluptuous woman with long red hair giving him a sultry look.

“I am.” Joseph drawled, slightly slurring the words. “But my friends can call me Joe.”

The woman smiles. “My name is Jessie and I have a… proposition for you.”

[Fate Points: 3]

You are Victor Kane, Sentinel Cadet, Savant, and Special Forces Team Leader and right now you’re conducting trials to determine who is worthy of joining your Squad. The current test: a non-lethal Pokemon battle between Katherine Clarke, Engineer Extraordinaire and Electric Trainer, and Ivy Ravel, a fellow Savant and a Medic.

The two young women stand on opposing sides of the battle field, staring each other down. Ivy’s eyes, normally soft and timid, blaze with an inner strength you haven’t seen in her before. In contrast, Katherine’s gaze is cool but lacking strength. As one, the two trainers reach to their belts for their Pokeballs and throw them out into the field while calling out for their Pokemon.

“You’re up Giselle!” Ivy shouts.

“Come on out, Watt!” Katherine yells.

Twin flashes of white light reveal a Ivy’s Kirlia and Katherine’s Magneton. You blink in surprise when you see the Magneton. It looks… strange. The Steel and Electric Pokemon is completely grey, with the normally colored magnets on its ends being slightly darker. On occasion some Pokemon have unusual colorations but this is the first time you’ve seen this.

Katherine acts first, “Watt! Use Thunderbolt!” It doesn’t look like she has a command style.

The Magneton points its magnets directly at Giselle, energy gathering at the tips and being discharged immediately. Without Ivy saying a word, the Kirlia quite literally dances out of the way, pirouetting as the electricity strikes the ground where it was standing and throwing up a small explosion. Giselle immediately begins running towards the Magneton, dodging the lightning strikes it sends out with ease. The Psychic Faerie is either extremely experienced, or incredibly light on its feet. You think it’s probably the latter.

Without warning, Katherine shouts out another command. “Thunder Wave!”
The Magneton, not having moved at all from its initial position, begins gathering electricity directly around itself. Giselle, acting without prompting from Ivy, leaps into air apparently trying to avoid the attack. The wave of electricity that explodes from Watt is directly in a half sphere directly to its front. The Kirlia, despite its impressive dodge, is caught in the blast and knocked to the ground. And that’s when you realize what one of Ivy’s strategies is: Deception.

Before your eyes, the form of Giselle begins to warp and twist before dissolving into the dark-furred form of Zachariah, Ivy’s Zoroark. The Poisonous Dark Pokemon jumps to its feet and shakes itself, before turning to face Watt again.

“Damn, wasn’t expecting that.” Ryan mutters from your side. You and Darius nod in agreement.

Katherine apparently was not either, as the widening of her eyes attests. “Watt, use Thunder Wa-” but the next action causes her command to die in her mouth.

>[Cont.]
>>
>>38403136

Zachariah blurs into motion, crossing the remaining distance between himself and Watt in seconds and striking the Magneton across its top sphere with claws wreathed in Darkness. The Electric Pokemon whirls in confusion as it tries to back away from the wickedly fast Dark Pokemon, but to no avail. Zachariah keeps its strikes up, landing blow after blow, rending steel and disrupting cohesion. But the Zoroark takes its own injuries as well, the energy radiating from the Magneton’s body crackling across his arms and torso.

Katherine has frozen up, not issuing any commands at all to her flailing Pokemon. Eventually, Watt loses cohesion and falls to the ground in a crackling pile. It’s alive, but severely injured.

“Match over!” You shout.

Zachariah pads back toward Ivy and begins licking at the electrical burns across the upper half of his body. The Savant pulls a canister out of her medical bag and begins spraying a substance on the Zoroark’s torso. Katherine on the other hand, doesn’t do anything, just staring at the heap of her Magneton with a stunned expression plastered across her face.

>[Cont.]
>>
>>38403183

Finally, she pulls out a Pokeball and recalls Watt with the red beam, worry replacing the shock. With the Magneton safely stored in stasis, she begins walking back towards you. Ivy, finishing her treatment of Zachariah, recalls him as well and makes her way to you.

The two female trainers stand in front of you. Ivy exults in her victory and Katherine is dejected in her defeat.

“Great job Ivy.” You say. “That was an impressive bluff. How’d you direct Zachariah without any commands?”
Ivy grins at your praise before answering. “I have a Psychic Link with all my Pokemon so I can command them without any noticeable signals.”

“Damn.” Ryan murmurs. “That’s useful.”

“It really is.” Darius agrees.

You then turn to Katherine who looks positively depressed. “Chin up Katherine. You did well against a strong opponent. With a little practice, you should be able to keep your cool easily.”

Katherine nods but doesn’t respond.

“Alright then,” You say. “Last Pokemon battle. Me versus Lyn.”

Lyn smiles while walking to her side of the field. You finger the Pokeballs on your belt as you walk to the other end, contemplating which Pokemon to send out. On the other side of the pitch, Lyn has already unhooked a ball from her belt and spins it in her hand, still grinning.

You decide to send out...

“Cobalt!” You yell as the Pokeball leaves your hand.

At that same moment, Lyn throws her own Pokeball while shouting, “Light ‘em up Ruck!”

Two flashes of White Energy reveal Cobalt in her gleaming glory and a Jolteon, fur crackling with electricity. Cobalt’s mind connects with yours and you feel her confidence at facing her enemy. You take a look at Lyn before issuing any commands and notice something odd. She’s just put on odd metallic gloves and is flexing her hands, as if getting a feel for them. Then she puts her hands down by her sides and curls her fingers toward her palms. You see a small flash of bluish-white light as a spark jumps from one finger to the next.

Immediately, Ruck bursts into action, charging Cobalt while trailing lines of Lightning.

Over the telepathic link between you and Cobalt you instruct her to...

{Psi-Bolt Barrage.} You transmit to Cobalt.
Immediately, a crackling blue energy field surrounds Cobalt. Within it, small bolts of condensed energy form and begin to shoot forward. Ruck dodges the first few bolts, zipping around them without losing speed. That’s when the full brunt of Cobalt’s attack is released. The wave of blue bolts that hits Ruck is impressive, knocking him off his feet and tossing him through the air like a ragdoll.

“No!” Lyn cries, the gloves on her hands sparking like mad. But the Jolteon doesn’t repond.

When the barrage subsides, Ruck lies on the other side of the field, singed and collapsed in a pile. You think Cobalt may have overdone it, but the fallen Electric Pokemon begins to stir. Its fur crackles and it leaps to its feet. There’s a sense of determination in its gaze as it focuses on Cobalt. It begins padding softly towards Lyn, keeping an eye on the Metang. From its movements you can tell that it’s hurt, but not too badly. It’s tough.

Lyn’s expression betrays a little relief, and her gloves crackle again. The Jolteon begins crackling even more, but otherwise doesn’t move.

{A Mental Attack} You transmit, foregoing niceties.

Almost immediately, you feel a Psychic tendril reach out from Cobalt to Ruck’s mind and the Metang’s eyes glow an eerie red. At first, Cobalt tries shifting Ruck’s perceptions but the Jolteon’s mind is… set. As it charges up the electricity in its fur, it’s practically impossible to change its mental state. Cobalt tries to communicate or introduce other sensations, but they are ultimately in vain. So, the Metang resorts to a measure that works on practically all beings: Pain.

Ruck shudders as Cobalt introduces a burning sensation to his system but holds the charge. Even as the phantom sensations of freezing, bludgeoning and cutting affect his mind, he continues to build and build. And finally, that energy is released.

The spiraling arcs of electricity streak across the field and hit Cobalt with enough force to throw her back several feet. It’s a powerful attack, but Cobalt’s construction is sturdy and it doesn’t do much damage. Until the electricity coursing through Cobalt’s system is wrenched out in a large parabolic arc that streams back towards Ruck.

>[CONT.]
>>
>>38407488

As soon as the arc hits the Jolteon, you see the injuries he had sustained diminish. The arc of electricity vanishes and Ruck stands ready, in much better health than before. In Contrast, Cobalt has taken quite a bit of damage, the edges of her frame glowing red hot.

{DAMAGE SUPERFICIAL} Cobalt transmits. {CORE SYSTEMS UNHARMED.}

So she’s still good to go.

Lyn is grinning now, and energy crackles across the surface of her gloves.

{MASTER VICTOR.} Cobalt transmits. {I HAVE A POSSIBLE COURSE OF ACTION. IT IS POSSIBLE FOR ME TO MANIPULATE ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY TO CAPTURE ELECTRICITY IN BATTERIES. IT WOULD BE A POWERFUL DEFENSE AGAINST ELECTRIC ATTACK BUT I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO CARRY OUT ANY OTHER ACTION. {Oooh.} Geist murmurs. {Even I felt that.}

Lyn cocks her head on the other side of the field and you can see her narrow her eyes at Cobalt. She senses what’s happening, but hopefully she doesn’t know what exactly. As her gloves crackle once more, Lyn commands Ruck to attack. Lightning gathers underneath the Jolteon’s fur and rips forth in a crackling yellow beam. That beam hits Cobalt head on and… disappears.

{Cobalt, I want you to take the energy you just absorbed and concentrate it into a very focused kinetic blast.} You tell her.

{CONCEPT IS SOUND.} Cobalt transmits back. {HOWEVER, I CANNOT CONVERT ELECTRICITY DIRECTLY TO KINETIC ENERGY. I CAN CONSTRUCT A PSYCHIC ATTACK THAT MIMICS WHAT YOU HAVE ASKED FOR. WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO DO SO?]

{If you would.} You transmit, sending a little approval along as well.

You sense Cobalt beginning to focus psychic energy into the spike between her eyes which begins to glow a pale blue. Across the field, Lyn’s gloves are constantly sparking but her Jolteon isn’t attacking, instead just pacing back and forth in front of her. Its fur issues crackling sounds at intervals as well along with some growls and barks from the mouth. You think they might be talking to each other. Damn, that girl is smart.

Cobalt sends you an impression that she’s halfway charged. That’s when Lyn releases a series of sparks from her left glove. Ruck’s form blurs and crackles and… splits? Suddenly there’s six Rucks standing in a row in front of Lyn.

>[Cont.]

The Double Team Gambit. An Advanced Battle Technique that must be honed through years of training. It’s unknown how the illusions are created as they often display different properties dependent on the Pokemon in question. While the illusions are generally classified as Psychic Phenomena, due to the fact that even Psychics can’t tell which illusion is real, they generally are created by Pokemon with excellent speed. Ruck definitely fits the bill.

{MASTER.} Cobalt intones. {I CANNOT DETERMINE WHICH TARGET TO FIRE AT. YOU MUST CHOOSE AS I CANNOT HOLD THE CHARGED ENERGY ONCE IT REACHES ITS PEAK..}

Damn. You’re just going to have to guess. Unless…

You concentrate on the illusions, reaching out with all your senses. Including those you never knew you had. And there, you have it. One of the Doubles FEELS full of energy while the others are simply shells.

{The one on the far left.} You command.

The bright blue beam that shoots out from Cobalt’s spike slams right into Ruck and hurls him right off the field, causing his Doubles to wink out in the process. He slams into the side of one of the storage buildings scattered around the Fields with enough force to leave a dent in the corrugated metal before falling to the ground.

>[Cont.]
>>
>>38411312

For a moment, you think the Jolteon is dead but it staggers to its feet before falling over once more. Lyn immediately rushes off towards Ruck.

On your end, Cobalt’s nose spike smokes as she stiffly sinks to the ground. She lands on her forearms and doesn’t move.

{ENERGY FEEDBACK HAS LOCKED MY FRAME INTO AN IMMOBILE POSITION.} She transmits to you. {REPAIRS MAY BE NEEDED.}

{Great Job Cobalt.} You tell her. {I’ll get you healed up soon.}

You feel her pride in a job well done as you pull a Pokeball off your belt and beam her up. Looking to where Ruck has landed, you see Lyn recalling him before beginning her walk back to the sidelines.

Speaking of the sidelines, your Spectators begin applauding. Darius grins at you while Ryan gives you an impressed look. Ivy’s eyes are practically sparkling as she smiles while Katherine looks a little stunned while she claps slowly.

You wait a moment for Lyn to rejoin your group.

She raises an eyebrow before speaking. “You know, I honestly didn’t expect to lose that fight. Well, I actually didn’t expect you to win. I was thinking a tie, maybe. But you’re way better than I thought.”

"It was a tight match. You did well and you should be proud of yourself and your Jolteon.” You say while holding out your hand. “You had some really impressive teamwork. I take it that glove is how you communicate?”

She grasps your hand and shakes it once before letting go. “Thanks. You were pretty coordinated yourself. And yeah, I developed these things a while ago.”

She holds up the gloves. Up close, you can see that they’re made of wire mesh and plated with steel.
“I initially tried making an amplifier for my electrokinesis.” Lyn says as she stows the gloves in a belt pouch. “And they worked pretty well for that. But the communication thing was something I came up with last year. Both my Jolteon and Luxray responded really well to these signals. Anyways, what’s next?”

You clap your hands and look at the group. “Alright then, lets go get our Pokemon healed.”

“Alright everyone.” You say. “We’ll be testing Melee Combat abilities now. Ryan, we’re also going to see if you’re as good an archer as you say.”

Ryan smirks. “Oh, I’m way better.”

“We’ll see.” Darius chuckles.

You lead the group back to the Training Fields, noting that the Major is still standing at the edge of the field, and over to the dummies. The wooden dummies have long been a staple of melee training for all Sentinels and they should do just fine for melee testing. You direct the candidates to line up in front of the dummies.

“First things first,” You order. “We’ll determine your baseline. Draw your weapons.”

Ryan has his saxe knives out in a flash, the curved handles gripped carefully in his hands. Next to him, Ivy has drawn her short sword from the scabbard on her left hip and is holding it up with both hands. You note the tip of the blade is rather rounded and the guard has a neat little figure eight shape.

On the other side of Ivy, Katherine has drawn the staff on her back and holds it with both arms in front of her. She gives it a little twist and spearheads pop out of both ends. Lyn on the other hand has just a standard combat knife held in an equally standard combat stance.

>[Cont.]
>>
>>38413768

“I’ll let Darius handle this part.” You say and take a step back.

Darius steps forward, immediately barking out commands while walking around the dummies. You recognize them vividly, having spent many hours drilling with those same orders ringing in your ears. The prospects act on the commands in a way unique to each of them.

Ryan strikes weak points with blinding speed. Joints, nerve clusters, arteries, he’s accurate and deadly. When he wants to disable, he hits with the flat of the blade.

Ivy is not nearly as effective. While competent in her own right, striking the points ordered without difficulty. She too disables with the flat of her blade.

Katherine prefers to keep her distance and attack with stabs but she gets close and hits with the shaft of her weapon as well. She’s good at fighting with a staff and a spear. When she disables, she quickly retracts a blade and hits with the blunt end of the stave.

Lyn is very good with that knife, hitting weak points like Ryan. She might actually be a little faster than him and easily just as precise. Probably due to her powers. When she disables, a small arc of electricity jumps from her hand to hit the dummy.

>[Cont.]
>>
>>38413801

Darius calls out the halt order and comes back around to you.

“Ryan and Lyn are really good. Fast as hell.” He mutters to you. “Katherine and Ivy are competent. Although, ‘competent’ for Sentinels means ‘deadly’ for the average soldier.”

You nod, making note of his comments.
