You are Siegfried Schmidt, a former guard from the city of Morsland. Due to various circumstances, you have become the temporary wielder of Galadriel, a holy sword which houses a powerful (and kind of rude) angel.

After a night of drinking with Reinhardt and Erika, you returned to Arniel's shop and got some sleep. Today is the day you and the representatives from the church will leave for the Watchtower.

After waking up from yet another bad dream, you get dressed and gather your gear. Once more, you shift Galadriel into it's inconspicuous dagger form and strap it to your belt. With everything ready, you head for the church, where Erika and Daniel should be waiting.

When you arrive, you see both Daniel and Erika waiting outside for you. Daniel is still wearing his white cassock, and Erika is once again wearing her white platemail. What you didn't expect to see, however, was Reinhardt standing there as well, wearing his guard's armor and carrying his halberd.

"Good morning Siegfried." Daniel calls out to you. "I hope you slept well, because we have a long journey ahead of us today."

You nod. "Slept about as well as I could. what are you doing here though Reinhardt? Decided to come with us or something."

"In your dreams." he says groggily. Sounds like he has a bad hangover from last night. "Captain decided he wants me to accompany you up to the edge of the forests. Apparently bandits have been causing trouble in that region lately, so he told me I had morning duty today so I could come along." He winces, holding his head. "Damn my head hurts."

"That's what you get for drinking as much as you did last night."

He groans. "Yeah, I suppose your right. But hey, it was an occasion. And I'd say it ended pretty well to." From the way he says that last part, you assume he's talking about whatever wench he managed to find last night that didn't just slap him.

"Well good for you then. Hope you're ready for a long march though."

He groans. "Don't need rub it in, you know."

Daniel, who has been standing back politely while you two talk, steps forward. "We are ready to head out now whenever the two of you are ready. It will be a few days before we get to the Watchtower though, so if you have any last minute preparations to make, I suggest doing so now."

The road from Morsland to the Watchtower is a long one. It will be a five days journey traveling northeast through the forest to get there. Most of that will be through the forests. As you and the others are marching, you come across a few people on the road, most are stragglers from the Festival, on their way back to their homes. You notice that most of them are carrying weapons of some sort though. A few of the wealthier ones, you wager they're merchants, are actually traveling with bodyguards.

Everyone is quiet for the most part, focused on the long road ahead of them, although in Reinhardt's case it's also because of a bad hangover. You could make conversation to help pass the time if you want.

You decide to ask Daniel about the dreams you've been having the past few days. He is walking at the head of the group, so you quicken your pace to match his.

"Hey, Daniel, I've been meaning to ask you something about Galadriel."

He raises an eyebrow. "You have questions? Then I will do my best to answer them, though as you know there is much I do not know."

You fill him in on the dreams you've been having. The terrified crusader who was blasted away by a demon, the fat and greedy hero who choked to death, and that you think your dreams are actually visions from Galadriel about how the past wielders died.

He listens to you quietly to the end, waiting until you finish to answer. "I'm afraid I've never heard of Galadriel granting dreams to others, but that is indeed how two of her past champions died, that much I know."

"Well do you have any idea why she's doing it?"

He shakes his head. "Who knows? Perhaps it is a warning, for you to learn from the mistakes of past champions. Or perhaps she has another reason for showing them to you. I cannot say for sure, but you could always ask her yourself. We have been walking for a while now, we could stop to take a break so you can meditate if you want."

"I am sure she has good intentions, though I understand why it would be unnerving for you. Do you have other questions for me?"

You think for a moment. "Well actually I have been wondering. What exactly is going to be expected of me once we the to the tower?"

"Well, besides our basic protocols, not much will really be expected of you. As a temporary champion, I imagine the Knight-Captain will not ask much of you except that you protect Galadriel to the best of your ability. If you are staying at the Watchtower, however, I doubt there will be any situation where you must do so. Since you are here to learn how to defend yourself as a temporary bearer, however, you may be expected to train with the other crusaders from time to time, just in case a situation should arise where you do have to defend yourself and Galadriel."

"Alright, so protect the sword and learn how to fight. What about those basic protocols you mentioned?"

He thinks for a moment. "Well, meals are served at a specific time each day, so you should be sure to wake yourself in time for breakfast. Curfew for everyone who is not on the night guard is at 10 at night, so that everyone is well rested for their duties the next day. No infighting is allowed, of course, and everyone is expected to have their weapons close by in case of an attack as well, though there have not been any en masse attacks on the tower since the days of the crusade. And finally, the Knight-Captain is the head authority of the Watchtower, so if he gives an order, it is expected that you will follow. The Knight-Captain is a reasonable man though, I am sure he will not cause any trouble for you."

Curfew at 10? Seems a little strict, but you doubt it will be too much of a problem.

"That's everything for now at least."

Daniel nods. "Very well then. Should you have questions about the Watchtower or Galadriel again, you are always free to ask Erika or myself."

You continue to walk in silence with the others for a while longer. Just as the sun is starting to set though, you can see the edge of the forest in the distance.

"Well, this is where we part ways." Says Reinhardt. "Keep an eye out for bandits on your way to the tower, and Siegfried?"

"Yeah?"

"Make sure you stay safe out there." He walks up to you and whispers. "And be careful with that sword. I still think it's cursed or something."

"I'll be careful Reinhardt. Stay safe on your way back to town, there should be an inn or two a ways back the way we came, you should stop there for the night on your way back to Morsland."

"Right, I'll do that." He says, as he starts to head back the way you came. You think how you'll probably not see each other again for a long time, and for a moment you feel a pang of homesickness. But still, like it or not, you have a job to do, so it's off to the Watchtower until someone comes and takes the sword off your hands.

-----
You, Daniel, and Erika make camp for the night at the edge of the forest. Daniel makes a fire while you and Erika set up three tents. Crickets are chirping and you can hear owls hooting in the distance. The three of you sit around the fire and eat the rations the three of you brought for the journey. After a while, Erika volunteers to take the first watch, then it will be your turn, and then Daniel's.

You head back to your tent and sit down with Galadriel, now in sword for, laying across your lap. You remember what Daniel told you to do last time, and focus on a mental image of Galadriel, everything from the engravings on the sheathe to the ring it made when your father struck it with a spoon.

Once again, you feel a gust of wind seemingly come from nowhere and when you open your eyes, you find yourself sitting on top of the clouds again, except this time you can see the stars and the moon shining above you. A ways in front of you, you see Galadriel, standing on top of the same mountain peak from last time.

"You have returned." You hear. Her voice echoes inside your head, just as it did last time. "What is it you wish of me?"

"It's about the dreams you sent me, the ones about your past wielders. What are you trying to tell me with them? Are you trying to warn me about their failings and how to avoid them?"

You can't see Galadriel's face behind her helmet, but for some reason get the impression she is...surprised? You can't really tell how you know that, you just do.

"What dreams do you speak of?" She asks. "I have not sent you any dreams, much less of past champions."

What? If she didn't send them to you, then why did you see them?

"I'm not lying, I've been having bad dreams for a few days now, and I think they're about past heroes. The first one there was a battle, and you were in halberd form. Then some huge black demon flew in and blew everyone away, then killed the one holding you while he was too scared to run. Then in the second one, there was a guy stuffing his face at some feast, I think his name was Henry? I couldn't see you, but I'm pretty sure I heard you tell him to stop stuffing himself, and then he got mad. Then he choked on his food."

Galadriel listens quietly to you as you explain everything you saw in your dreams. You feel as though she is watching you very carefully as you speak. When you finish, there is a long pause before she finally speaks.

"I did not send you those dreams. But indeed, those were visions of my past champions. I do not know how you saw them."

"Wait, then how come after the first dream you turned into a halberd without me knowing how to do that?"

"I am not entirely sure myself. However, I believe it was a subconscious act on your part. Though I can choose to grant or deny you my powers, there is still a bond that connects us, one which I only have partial control over. It is possible that while you were asleep, you activated my power without intending to."

There is a long pause of silence. Finally, Galadriel answers you.

"27." She says, with a hint of...sadness? "And no, not all of them, though many did. All of them aside from Andras did die however, either in battle, by accident, or through foul play."

"27?! Holy shit, no wonder Reinhardt thinks you're cursed."

You can feel Galadriel grow angry. Once again, you can't see her face, but you can tell. Maybe it's because of that bond she mentioned earlier?

"I am NOT curse." She says firmly in your head. "Your friend Reinhardt is a fool if he believes so. It was not my fault that they died, it was just-" She trails off. Once again, you can feel that sense of sadness coming from her. "The task was just too much for them."

"You mentioned foul play. You mean they were poisoned or something?"

"Some of them, yes. As you know, there are many who do not think fondly of the crusades. Thought that is understandable, it is a necessary task. But not everyone believes so, and because the selection of a new champion often heralds the start of a new crusade, some of my champions were...killed. So that they would not start a new one."

Killed so that they won't start another crusade? That's pretty damn harsh, but you could see it happening back then. Those were dark times, and some people just wanted the crusade to end so the fighting would stop.
>>
>>38390724
"You sound sad talking about them. I thought you said your past champions didn't meet your expectations?"

"They did not." She says. "Some of them were close, but none of them were perfect. And because of that, the task proved too great, and they all died as a result. Though it was through their failings, it is me who chose them, and thus it is me who is responsible for their deaths. It is why I have not chosen a new champion for 200 years, because I was waiting for a champion who was both virtuous enough to take on the task and strong enough to see it through."

"So basically, you were waiting for someone you were sure could do the job."

"Correct. But because Andras seeks to capture my blade, I was unable to wait any longer. You are not perfect, you would not be able to see the task through. But you are capable enough to stay alive until someone who can comes along, and that is why I have chosen you for the time being."

>"You'll be waiting forever then, there's no one like that."

"What do you mean I 'wouldn't be able to see the task through'? Where do I fall short?"

Galadriel extends her six wings and flaps over to where you are standing, towering above you. She examines you closely, to the point where you feel a little uncomfortable.

"You do not have the experience for it." She says flatly. "You have not been in a life-or-death battle before, save your fight with Andras. Even then, you were only able to wound him, and were it not for Daniel and Arniel, you would have died right there. You could not hope to tackle Malaphas, let alone his lords as you are now. On top of that," she continues. "You are afraid. You did well to face Andras back at the festival, but you still dread the idea of going on crusade. Just like your friend Reinhardt, you fear that you will be killed by the demons, just as Andras nearly did on the day of the festival. And finally, you lack the zeal. If given the choice, you would sooner remain in Morsland as a simple guard. Because of all this, if you were to go to crusade right now, then you would surely be slain."

Ouch. As brutally frank as she was the last time. She's right on some fronts, you've only ever had to deal with pickpockets with knives before all this, but her expectations are absolutely impossible for anyone to fit. If they did, they wouldn't need her to win the crusades.

"You might be right to an extent." you tell her. "But if those are your expectations, then you'll be waiting forever, because there's no human, elf, or dwarf that can fit that. In the end, we're all human, and we aren't perfect."

She looks somewhat taken aback by your statement. Eventually however, she starts to nod. "Perhaps you are right. But even if my expectations are too high, I will just have to stand by them and hope for the best, for it seems that is what it will take to end Malaphas and reclaim the Forsaken Lands."

You shake your head. You tried to talk some sense into her, but it looks like she's going to stand firm, even if she does know what she's looking for is impossible. You are about to sever the link and return to consciousness, but before you do Galadriel says something else.

"I still stand by what I said, that you are not a perfect champion. But perhaps I did not give you enough credit either."

That's...good, you guess. You sit back down and sever the connection, and when you open your eyes again, you see that you are back inside your tent again.

Good timing too, because shortly after you return to consciousness, you hear Erika tap on the side of your tent.

"Hey, it's time for your shift, are you awake in there?"

"Yes." you respond, exiting your tent.

"Good. Then go ahead and take a seat by the fire. If you see anything, wake the rest of us up. Otherwise, it's Daniel's turn next."

You nod, and take a seat next to the fire, poking at the low flames with a stick. All the while, you keep your eyes and ears open for something out of the ordinary.

You stand up as calmly as you can, so that whatever intruders are here won't know that you've noticed them. You walk back over to the tents, like you're going to retrieve something from yours, and tap on Erika and Daniel's tents.

"Hey, wake up. I think I heard something out there."

There's a short pause where no one says anything, then a moment later Daniel and Erika exit their tents, Daniel carrying his staff and Erika her greatsword, with her armor hastily put on.

"Where did you hear it coming from?" Erika asks, scanning the forests.

"From over that way." You tell her, nodding in the direction you heard the sound coming from.

"Then let us check it out, now that the three of us are awake." Daniel says.

The three of you sneak over to where you heard the noise coming from as best you can. When you get there, you see the snapped twig in question, but nothing else.

"Did they leave?" Erika whispers.

"I don't know." You tell her.

Out of the corner of your eye, you see a sudden movement. Quickly, you move out of the way at the last second, and an arrow flies right past you.

"Bandits!" You shout out. And sure enough, four more of them come out of the bushes. In the trees, you see the one with the bow who shot at you.

Erika draws her greatsword, while Daniel backs up and begins to mutter some sort of incantation. You draw Galadriel and get into a stance yourself. Two of the four bandits attack Erika, while one of them tries to move around to get at Daniel. The last one moves up to attack you. The archer in the trees draws his bow, it's too dark for you to tell who he's aiming at.

You meet the bandit with a hard swing, but he manages to block it just barely with his shield. He swings his own sword at you, and though you manage to disengage before it hits it's mark, he does deal you a grazing blow

>-1 HP, 9/10 remaining.

Around you, Erika manages to land a solid blow on one of the bandits fighting her, and he falls to the ground. The remaining one swings his axe at her, landing a grazing blow on her as well.

Daniel finishes muttering his incantation, and a bolt of light flies from his staff and strikes the bandit in the trees. He falls, his shot going wide and missing everyone.

The last bandit now attacks Daniel with his spear. Unarmored and unarmed save for his staff, all he can do is back up and dodge the bandit's thrusts as best he can. He manages to avoid being hit for now, but he won't be able to dodge forever, and he can't concentrate on his spells while dodging.

You swing your sword at the bandit. He puts up his shield to block it...but you shift Galadriel into a warhammer mid swing, smashing his shield in a mighty blow.
>2 damage dealt
The bandit is not looking too good, but he's still standing. His shield is ruined now as well, which means he won't be able to defend himself as well now.

Erika is having a hard time fending of the axe-wielding bandit attacking her. Both have landed minor blows on each other.

Daniel is having difficulty avoiding the spear-wielding bandit's blows. The bandit lands a stab to one of his legs, which slows him down. Before he can land a serious blow, however, Daniel casts a spell which causes a sudden bright flash of light right in front of him, blinding the bandit. Daniel limps towards you, trying to put some distance between himself and his assailant.

You dodge the sword bandit's weakened swings and make a break for Daniel. Shifting your warhammer into a halberd mid charge, you rush past Daniel and towards the spear bandit, who seems to have regained his vision. He makes a jab at you, but you deftly dodge passed it and stab with the point of your halberd. The bandit gasps when he sees your halberd coming, and your halberd's actually point goes into his mouth and stabs up through the roof of his mouth and into his skull, killing him instantly.

You rush the blinded sword bandit, expecting this to be a quick kill.

Boy, were you wrong.

Despite being blinded, the bandit seems very intent on surviving, because when you go to finish him he swings his sword around frantically, managing to knock aside your thrust. Realizing that he hit something, he steps forward and swings frantically, trying to hit you. He nearly does, but you duck below his blows just in time and stab him in the gut. He falls dead.
>2 damage dealt

Erika finally manages to finish off the axe bandit, slashing him across his left leg, then decapitating him while he's down.

With the bandits finished, you check on the others. Daniel has a nasty wound on his leg where the spear bandit stabbed him, but he'll live. Erika is wounded as well from her fight with the axe bandit, but nothing major. You yourself suffered only a grazing blow along your right arm.

>>38392657
a bit slow. There's no need to micromanage every "hit". A round could last 2-4 clashes before one has enough of a breather to think.

Don't immediately abstract things, though. Slowly test-change the combat bit by bit to see what flows better.

What you've got now works for this scale of combat, anyway.

Not going to talk about dice probabilities, because caring about that tends to kill QMs.

"Is everybody okay?"

"Yeah...I'm fine." Erika says between pants. "Just...just a little worn out."

Daniel winces at his leg. "I will be fine, do not worry." he says, sitting himself down.

"Wait here you two, I have a first aid kit and some bandages in my tent." You tell them, starting to head back to your tent before Daniel stops you.

"No need." He says, as he raises his staff. When he does, the wound on your arm starts to glow with a warm gold light, as does Erika and Daniel's wounds. When the light clears, you see that your wound has been healed.
>10/10 HP remaining.

Daniel lowers his staff, breathing heavily. "Hah, I fear I'm getting much too old for this."

"Oh yeah, I forgot you can heal."

"Only if the wounds are relatively fresh, which is why I'm glad you brought a first aid kit."

Erika scopes the area while the two of you are talking. "You think that was the last of them?"

"I believe so." Daniel says. "But just in case, we should continue to keep watch. I believe it is my turn to take watch while the rest of you sleep."

>"Nah, it's fine. I'll take watch again, you get some rest."

>>38392657
I liked it, honestly. One shot rolls for combat are pretty solid, and the changing weapon thing was handled well, as well as the combat options. About the only thing I could think of changing is maybe we only need to roll once for each weapon, and have the rest be simply choice based.
So, one roll determines our weapon effectiveness, and we switch weapons to either remedy a bad roll, or to adapt to situation.
By the way, I'm almost completely new to the whole /tg/ scene, so feel free to tell me this idea sucks if it does. Spade's a spade, after all

Okay, so some of you think it was a bit slow, while others think it was just fine. I'll try to think of a way to make things move faster.

As for 5 being a bit low for buffs/debuffs, would 10 be a better number for a d100?

And as for a fate point system, I'll think about it. Maybe what I'll do is give you guys a "Hero point" No relation to the Pathfinder system of the same name for doing cool things (crits, doing heroic things, etc.) and let you use them to get a bonus on certain rolls or reroll nat 1s. How does that sound?
>>
>>38392847
Sure to both
>>
>>38392847
I'm against messing with the dice. If we need an edge, let it be a power granted by Galadriel. Rely more on narrative and descriptions.

If you want a balanced dice mechanic that is actually fun to use for both player and QM, it takes too much effort to figure out.
>>
>>38392847
If were doing best of 3, then 5 should be fine.
Fate point system works, but only sparingly, because it's HIGHLY unlikely there will be 3 rolls out of 3 low enough to warrant a re-roll.
>>
>>38392847
This sounds good to me. Might want to hold off on buffing up the dice until Galadriel realizes we're a half decent hero for thematic reasons, but yeah this is good.

Hm. These are good points. Alright, for the time being at least, we'll stick with 5 for most of the buffs, since fighting defensively and striking hard shouldn't make a humongous difference, particularly for someone with relatively little real life battle experience.

As for fate points, I think what I'll do to limit it is cap it at one hero point, so you guys have to think carefully about whether you want to spend it or not. You won't just trip over them all the time either.

You practice archery with Galadriel, whom you learn can form arrows of holy light for the bow. In your free time you practice, shooting at the trees. The light arrows pierce like a normal bow, but they don't seem to burn, though maybe that will change as you grow more used to Galadriel. Thinking back to the fight with Andras, when you cut off his arm and saw steam rise from the wound, you imagine it will probably burn like fire for demons anyways, though for now at least it seems that's limited to demons.

A few days pass, and you all set up camp again. This time, you have the first watch. You sit outside, stoking the fire and making sure it stays lit. For a while, everything is going fine, but then something strange happens. While you're sitting on a log by the fire, you think you feel the ground start to vibrate a bit.

Even if it's a perfectly natural earthquake you wouldn't want to try sleeping through one, espicially in a building of unreinforced stone and mortar construction. I speak from experience on this issue.

You're not sure what's going on, but you go to wake the others just in case. The ground continues to shake as you walk over to the tents and tap on their sides.

"Guys, wake up. Something's causing the ground to shake, you might want to get up."

A moment later, Daniel and Erika come out of their tents, ready for battle if necessary. The three of you stand there, waiting for something to happen and...nothing. After a while, the ground stops shaking, and everything returns to normal.

"What was that all about?" You ask.

"Not sure." Erika says, just as confused as you. "Daniel, do you have any idea?"

Daniel thinks. "It could have just been a small earthquake, though I am not sure. For now, at least, it seems everything is fine. I believe it is time for my shift now, so the two of you should go back to sleep, I will wake you if anything should happen."

Shrugging it off, you head back to your tent and sleep for the rest of the night. Daniel does not wake you until morning, when it is time to go.

The three of you continue to travel down the road, when finally you see the edge of the woods in the distance. The three of you exit the woods, and on the horizon you can see it. A large white fortress, with spires that reach high into the sky. The White Watchtower, found close to the Forsaken Lands' border with the Kingdom of Iseria.

"There it is." Daniel confirms, smiling proudly. "It's quite the sight, isn't it?"

>"Looks just like I heard. Big white fortress, tall spires, everything."
>"Why is it called a watchtower? It looks more like a big White Castle."

You whistle. "That's pretty damn impressive."

Daniel smiles. "I'm glad you think so. The watchtower has stood here since the days of the crusades. It is an impressive structure, I'm sure you will-"

Before Daniel can finish his sentence, however, the ground begins to shake, just like last night. Only this time, it's more violent, to the point where you almost lose your balance and fall. A moment later, a giant worm-like monster bursts out of the ground ahead of you. It turns to you and roars, acid leaking from it's maw.

You and Erika quickly draw your weapons, while Daniel raises his staff. "It's a Wurm!" Daniel shouts. "Watch out for it's acid!"

Erika, having only a greatsword, moves forward to attack the wurm head-on. Meanwhile, Daniel begins to recite incantations. And you

You shift Galadriel into a crossbow. It won't fire as quickly as a bow, but it should have some more power to it, which should be good considering how thick this thing's skin looks.

You separate from Daniel, and decide to offer covering fire for Erika. When the Wurm is about to attack her, you take aim and fire.

You fire a shot just as it's about to attack Erika. Your shot pierces it's soft underbelly, making it roar in outrage, spewing acid all around it.

Erika closes, avoiding the falling acid as best she can, and strikes at it with her greatsword. Her blade appears to cut into it's skin, but given it's size a greatsword wound is not so deadly.

Daniel finishes the incantation to his spell, and you feel a warmth around your arms. For some reason, you feel a little stronger.

You fire two shots, the first on strikes it in one of it's big black eyes, and the other pierces it's soft underbelly once again. Now half blinded, you think another well placed shot or two might end it.

Erika contributes to this, as she stabs the Wurm's underbelly with her greatsword, and runs around it's side, dragging her greatsword along and ripping through it's skin.

Daniel casts another spell, this time firing a beam of light from his staff, which strikes the wurm's underbelly, leaving a large scorch mark.

In the distance, coming from the Watchtower you see a collection of people on their way, 10 mounted figures leading the way.

The Wurm, close to death and enraged, dives back into the ground. For a moment you don't know where it is, until the ground begins to rumble and the wurm resurfaces, jumping into the air and falling towards you, it's acidic maw gaping wide open.

Fuck it, the thing's nearly dead, and you don't think standing in place to shoot at it is a very smart idea.

You bolt out of the way, the wurm's shadow getting darker as it closes in. You leap as you get to the edge, and manage to just barely get out of the Wurm's way before it plummets back into the ground.

As it does, Daniel finishes one last incantation, and a blast of fire explodes on the Wurm's midsection as it's burrowing into the ground. The Wurm lets out one last roar, and then goes quiet. When you look over the edge of the huge hole it made in the ground, you see it lying there immobile, surely dead.

Around this time, the cavalry from the Watchtower arrives. All of them are wearing white platemail, similar to Erika's. They head over towards Daniel, who is standing a fair distance away from you.

"Is everything alright brother Daniel?" The one in front asks. "We came as soon as we saw the fighting from the tower."

"I am fine, captain." Daniel says. "I believe that last spell killed it."

"That is good. I am glad both you and Erika are alright." He looks around, taking notice of you. "But where is Galadriel? And who is this stranger you've brought with you?"

You decide it's better to be safe than sorry, and shoot the Wurm one more time, just to be sure. When that's done, you walk up to the man on horseback speaking with Daniel and introduce yourself.

"I'm a guard from Morsland. We need to discuss an event that occured there. Andras is back."

The man seems taken aback by this news. "Andras? He has not shown his face since the end of his own crusade, why would he-?" the answer strikes him mid sentence. "The sword! Galadriel, what happened to it?!"

"Calm down." you tell him. "Galadriel is safe, but that's something we actually need to speak with you about in private."

The man considers your words for a moment, then nods. "Very well then. In that case, come with us. I'm sure we will have much to discuss when we get back to the watchtower."

Hey, next time we suggest halberd, can you make it a Dangpa? It's a Korean trident with bladed edges, can be used like a halberd but is also capable of a few neat tricks.
>>
>>38394823
If the majority agree on it, sure. Try posting a picture of one next time an opportunity to shift weapons shows up, maybe other anons will agree once they see what it looks like.
>>
>>38394823
Nah, halberd is a better weapon and doesn't look half as gay as a dangpa.
>>
>>38394823
Hell yeah. We talked about that one in the last thread.
>>38395079
A halberd is much more tip heavy. The dangpa is more comparable to a spear or a quarterstaff and thus faster. + calling a trident spear gay when it's the weapon of one of the most masculine gods, Poseidon, who was so manly he shape-shifted into a horse just to rape a priestess of Athena.
>>
>>38397113
>manly he shape-shifted into a horse just to rape a priestess of Athena.
As funny as that is I still don't like multiple pronged weapons as they don't pierce as well and they are more easily blocked. I apart from being faster I don't see any benefit and if speed polearm is what we want go stair up spear.
>>
>>38398297
The dangpa is used for the same purpose as the billhook to break spears and other pole-arms.
It's a defensive weapon with multiple purposes.
It's just a more lightweight halberd used for more defensive purposes.
>>
>>38398422
>It's a defensive weapon with multiple purposes.
Yeah and I think it's too focused in that area the three prongs makes it shit at offense a bill would be better as it has penetrating power
>>
>>38398670
Three prongs makes it shit at offense? Sir, have you seen what a trident can do? Depending on the specific make of the bill, the dangpa would have -more- penetration, the bill could cut deeper, sure, but armor would mitigate it better, if it's a bill with a point it would penetrate better of course but it wouldn't go too deep because of the shape, if it's a bill with a spike on top, that is basically a halberd. And overpenetration is also something to avoid, it's the reason most trusting spears have those little wings at the end of the blade, so the spear doesn't get stuck so deep that it is hard to retract so a dangpa or trident would be a very functional weapon depending on how you use it, it would be useful against shorter weapons, or as an impromptu sword breaker if you choke up on the handle so far as to be essentially holding the base of the blade. The benefit of lighter spears is that you can hold them farther up to use them as a shorter weapon if the enemy gets too close, that is something a bill would be shit-tier at. All of this however is negated by the fact we can change the weapon on the fly, a bill would be great against a slower opponent, but anyone with decent skill and speed would trump it rather easily, on the flip side the same is said for any pole weapon, polearms are utterly devastating if the person using them is very skilled but if the wielder has only basic understanding, the type doesn't matter much.
>>
On the subject of polearms, I'd like a Bardiche.

With the Wurm dead, you and the others follow the Knight-Captain back to the Watchtower. It's even bigger close up. You walk up the ramp and across the bridge that leads to the entrance. Men in white armor stand guard there, just as you once did back in Morsland.

Inside is a large grand foyer, with doors and hallways leading in every direction. It is bustling with activity, like the city square back in Morsland. The Knight-Captain leads you up a few flights of stairs to his office. He holds the door open and gestures for the three of you to step inside.

Inside, you see several bookcases lining the walls of the spacious office, and a desk almost completely covered in stacks of papers. You pull up a chair in front of his desk, as Erika and Daniel do the same.

The Knight captain takes his seat behind the desk and removes his helmet. The first thing that strikes you is his pointed ears. The second is just how old the Knight-Captain appears to be. Unlike Daniel who's aged well, this man's face has several deep wrinkles, and his ears seem to be slightly droopy. He's probably the oldest elf you've ever seen, and you know that they can live a pretty long time.

"Now then." He says, setting his helmet down on the desk and crossing his arms. "If you have news for me, tell me now, starting with whatever happened with Galadriel."

>"Well, the good news is she's found someone to carry her."

"During the ceremony, when everyone was coming up to try and lift the sword, Andras appeared and tried to take the sword. We managed to fend him off though."

The old captain sighs in relief. "I see. That is good news. But what of Galadriel?"

You smile, and idea coming to mind. "Oh, it's right here." you say, shifting the crossbow you were carrying into it's normal sword form again in a sudden flash.

The poor old captain nearly leaps out of his chair in surprise at the abrupt revelation. He quickly recomposes himself though, and leans in, looking at you and the sword in confusion.

"Galadriel..? Then the crossbow you were carrying, and the sword, you...By Aureus, are you telling me you lifted the sword?!" The old captain's voice is a strange mix between confusion, disbelief, and...relief?

"Yes." You respond. "But I'm not a permanent champion. Galadriel chose me to wield her temporarily, until either someone more qualified comes along or Andras is dealt with."

"Oh." He says, visibly disappointed. He regains his composure and sits back down in his chair, crossing his arms again. "While that is disappointing, it is good that she has at least chosen someone for the time being. I must admit though, I have never heard of her choosing a temporary champion before. Things must have been dire at the ceremony."

You think back to the battle with Andras, how he managed to get back up despite being stabbed in the head and having most of his limbs severed by Erika, and how he nearly killed you had it not been for Daniel and Arniel. "It was pretty dangerous. I probably would have died if Daniel and a local apothecary hadn't saved me."

"I see. Then I am glad he was able to help. However, if the situation is dire enough to force Galadriel to choose a temporary champion, I must ask. Do you think you can protect the sword, should Andras or some other foul demon come to take it?"

"Well I managed to chop off his arm last time we fought, so that's a start. But right now, probably not. Which is why I'm here."

The knight-captain looks surprised. "You actually managed to sever his arm? I'm impressed, it seems Galadriel chose well."

'Tell that to her.' you think to yourself.

"Well then, if you came here to learn how to defend yourself, then you've come to the right place. The watchtower has been training to fight the forces of Malaphas since the first crusade. I myself am a survivor of the last one. If anyone can give you the tools to protect Galadriel, we can."

Hold up, did he just say he was in the last Crusade? That was 200 years. You weren't even sure elves could live that long.

"But first thing's first, we have to decide on something." the knight-captain continues. "News that Galadriel has chosen a new champion, temporary or not, will surely spread like wildfire in the watchtower. They will look up to you and expect much, even if you are only to watch over the sword for the time being. Some will even think it is the beginning of a new crusade."

Oh shit, here comes the part you were afraid of.
>>
>>38410241
"We have already told our friend Siegfried that he was not required to go to crusade." Daniel intervenes, sensing where the conversation is about to go.

The knight-captain furrows his brow. "Even if he is just a temporary champion, the others will expect much from him Daniel, you know that. I'm not proposing we declare a new Crusade, I'm just saying that they will expect him to fight the demons, even if it's just assisting them on patrol when a demon is found outside of the Forsaken Lands. The boy wields Galadriel, it is his duty to fight, and in due time maybe Galadriel will even deem him worthy of being a champion in his own right."

"I gave him my word that that is exactly what we would NOT do, captain."

"It's not much I'm asking, just that he go on patrol from time to time, help guard the tower once in a while. I'm not asking him to just charge into the Forsaken Lands. Besides, if he can stand up to Andras, he can handle a few imps."

Great, now they're talking as if you're not in the room. It seems the captain wants you to assist in some way, but you really don't want to get involved in all the demon fighting. Not after you nearly got killed the last time. Maybe there's a compromise somewhere? Or you could just flat out leave and tell him to deal with it, or you could agree and do what he said. You doubt anything as powerful as Andras will just be wandering close to the border anyway.

>"Forget it. I said I wasn't getting involved in all this demon fighting crap, and I meant it."

"Screw it, if it's just patrols I'll help. Doesn't sound much different from what I did as a guard anyways, except it's demons you're looking for and not pickpockets."

The two of them stop arguing and look over to you. Daniel looks concerned, but the knight-captain looks relieved.

"I'm glad to hear that." He says, sitting back down.

"But hold on." You continue. "I said I'll help, but I'm not heading out there until I've had some training on how to fight those things first. I'll just get in the way as I am now anyways."

The captain thinks over what you say for a moment. "You have a point. It would be unfair of me to throw you out on patrol without teaching you how to defend yourself." He pulls out a sheet of paper from one of his stacks and starts scribbling something down. "I will give you a months worth of training with our instructors before we start putting you on patrol. You'll still be training when not on patrol, but this way you have time to learn before you need to go out there." He finishes writing, then folds the paper over and hands it to Daniel. "Take this to Wilhelm and Leonard. We'll have them watch over his training."

Daniel takes the letter. "Very well then sir." He says, rather unhappy.

"Good. Then if there's nothing else, you are all free to go. Dinner will be in two hours, I'll make the announcement that Galadriel has chosen a new champion then. Until then, keep it a secret for the time being, just so that people don't start getting the wrong idea."
>>
>>38410971
The three of you exit the office and leave the old knight-captain to his paperwork, but before you do you change the sword back into it's discreet dagger form once again and place it back on your belt. Almost immediately after the door closes, Daniel starts apologizing to you.

"I am terribly sorry about this Siegfried." He says with a guilty expression. "I believed the captain would be more understanding, but I suppose the idea of a new champion aiding the tower was too much for him to resist."

>"Don't worry about, it's just patrols. Could be worse."

"Don't worry about it, it's just patrols. Could be worse."

Daniel cheers up some. "I'm glad you aren't too upset. The captain is usually a reasonable man, but he was a Crusader during Andras's Crusade, so he is eager for a new champion to present themselves."

You shrug. "I guess that makes sense. I get the feeling I'm going to hate dinner though..."

He laughs. "Not looking forward to the attention, are you? I understand." He looks to the left and right, making sure no one else is there before whispering. "You should know though, attendance to meals is not mandatory. If you were so inclined, you could probably grab something from the kitchens before dinner and skip dinner."

Huh. That doesn't sound like a bad idea, actually.

"In any case though, I should be on my way and deliver the captain's letters. Erika, would you mind being a guide for Siegfried while I am gone? I am sure he will want to drop his things off and get an idea of where everything is."

Erika, who had been quiet this whole time, nods. "Sure thing. Where should I take him to leave his stuff?"

"I believe there is a vacant room on the 12th floor, close to the library. Take him there."

Erika nods. "Alright then."

With that done, Daniel leaves to go find the two people the captain told him to find, leaving you and Erika alone.

"Sorry I didn't do much to defend you back there." she apologizes. "Daniel can get away with it because he's a senior here, I'd never be able to get away with arguing like he did."

"Like I said, it's fine."

"Good. In any case, it looks like I'll be the one showing you around this place. Is there any place in particular you want to see first?"

>"Take me to the room I'll be sleeping in here, I want to drop my stuff off first."

"Is there a practice field of some kind here? I want to go see that. Also, is there like a bath house or something? I need to clean up before dinner, wash all the dirt and such from the trip."

Erika thinks for a moment. "Bath house? No, not really, but the mages here have something like that set up for everyone in their rooms. You can head there to wash up later if you want. We do have a practice yard, follow me."

She leads you back down some stairs, passing by more of the watchtower's occupants on the way. You stand out since you're the only one there not wearing white armor or a cassock, but no one stops to question you at least.

Eventually the two of you come to a courtyard of sorts in the center of the tower. The roof is open, revealing the orange sky overhead, and there are several practice dummies for both melee and archery practice standing around. You also see several weapons racks standing to the side, holding what you assume to be dulled weapons of all sorts, from halberds and spears to swords and daggers. People all around are either practicing with one of the dummies, or sparring with a partner.

"This is the training yard." Erika announces. "You'll probably be doing a lot of training here."

"Looks good." you think aloud. "Does everybody come here to train?"

"For the most part, yeah. A lot of people come here during their free time as well. Usually I'll come here in the afternoons when I have time."

>Alright then, you've seen enough. Move on to (specify)
>You feel like practicing. Grab a weapon (specify) from the rack and practice with one of the dummies.

"I get the sense I'm going to be spending a lot of time on my back here for the next month."

Erika smiles. "Depends on who you're sparring. But yeah, probably."

"Ha ha" you say dryly. "Alright, I just needed to know where this place was. Can we head to my room next? I want to drop my stuff off and get ready for dinner."

"Sure thing, this way."

Once again you follow Erika around the tower, up the stairs this time. You're glad she's here to show you around, because this place is practically built like a maze. You imagine it would be very easy to get lost here.

Eventually, you arrive on the twelfth floor, where Daniel mentioned your room would be earlier. Erika brings you to a room on the west side of the tower, just down the hall from a large set of double doors with a plaque reading "Library".

"This is the place." Erika says, opening the door for you. "I'll wait out here for you."

You step inside, closing the door behind you. The room is quite spacious, much more so then you would have expected, actually. There is a desk to the side with an empty bookshelf standing next to it, as well as a closet to store your clothes, and an armor rack to store your armor...when you get a new set, that is. Speaking of which, you set down your pack and pull out the great helm you brought with you from home, and set it up on the armor rack, along with the shield your father gave you as a gift. You drop your bag on the floor, deciding to organize everything later.
>>
>>38412873
In addition, there is another door on the left side of your room. When you open it, you find a large basin to the right and a stone seat directly in front of you, as well as a smaller basin on the left.

You suppose the large basin is meant for you to bathe in and the small one is to wash your hands, but you don't see any water around. Erika mentions the tower's mages had a hand in these, maybe they're suppose to summon water or something? You notice they do have strange knobs on top of them.

The stone seat you recognize as one of those weird chamberpots you find in castles, the ones that have a hole that lead down to the castle moat. However, when you lean over to look down into the hole you see nothing but darkness.

>Turn one of the knobs.
>Use the stone seat.
>Look inside the stone seat. You have no idea where that's suppose to lead.
>You don't understand any of this fancy magic crap. See if Erika knows how to work these things.

You don't understand any of this fancy magic crap, so you decide to see if Erika knows how to work these things.

You head back to the door to your new room and find Erika waiting outside. "Uh...Erika? You said the bath house thing was made by the mages here, right?"

She raises an eyebrow. "Yeah, why?"

"Well can you come here and explain to me how this stuff works? I don't understand what any of this shit is."

Erika laughs. "Haha, right, I suppose you wouldn't have any idea how the stuff in there works. Well, you're lucky I'm here to educate you."

You let Erika inside and she heads to the strange bath house room to the side. The first things she does is turn to the large basin and turn the knobs. Suddenly, water starts to fall from the spigot fixed into the basin.

"You just turn the knobs here for water. The one on the left is for warm water, the one on the right is for cold."

Wait, it can summon warm water too, without boiling it first? You head over to the smaller basin and try it yourself, putting your hands underneath the water's flow. Sure enough, one knob summons warm water, while the other one summons cold water.

"Damn. The mages here built something like this for every room?"

"Yup, every one. From what I hear back in the day you had to go to the river close by and clean up there, but the mages thought up these things so people didn't have to walk all the way there to get cleaned up."
>>
>>38413358
"Huh, interesting. What about that thing there?" You point to the stone seat. "How does it work?"

"It works exactly as you'd expect it too, dumbass." she jokes.

"Okay, but where does...'it' go, exactly? I look inside but I don't see a bottom or anything, and we're too high up for it to go all the way to the moat."

She starts to say something, but catches herself. What you can only describe as an evil grin starts to form on her face. "I dunno, look inside and see." She says. You don't have to be an experienced guard to tell she's hiding something, but at the same time, you're kind of curious now...

>Fuck it, you'll bite. Look inside.

You don't trust this, not one bit. At the same time though, you ARE curious. You think, trying to find a way to do this without falling for whatever trick Erika has for you, when you have an idea.

Pulling the dagger from your belt and shifting it into a bow, you draw the string back and fire off a shimmering arrow into the stone seat.

The arrow flies in, and then...nothing. It just seems to disappear into the Aether. The inside doesn't light up at all, leaving it's contents a mystery.

"Nice try." Erika says smugly. "I guess you just don't care then..."

Dammit. You know this is a trick, but you've already bitten the bait by this point.

"I swear if some Void creature eats me I am going to haunt you."

She grins. "Oh no, no. Nothing like that's going to happen, it's perfectly safe."

Uh huh. Well whatever, you stick your head inside the stone seat. There's a strange "vvvwooop!" sound when you do so, and you get the strange feeling this isn't inside the castle anymore. You turn your head and look around, but it's still too dark and you can't see anyohsweetaureusfatherofcreationwhatthefuckisthatsmell

You pull your head out as fast as you can, hearing that weird "vvvvwoop!" sound again as you do and gasp desperately for air. Your eyes are bloodshot from the horrible odor stinging your eyes. While you're trying desperately to get some air, Erika is buckled over laughing at you.

"Pfffft, hahahahaha, oh man. I didn't think you'd actually do it."

You cough, trying to get the last of the remaining stench out of your lungs. "Oh sweet Aureus, that was the most foul thing I've ever smelt in my entire life. What in the Void was that?"

"It's where 'it' all goes to." Erika says, still chuckling to herself. "No idea exactly where that is, but I know it's not here, and I don't think wherever it is has been cleaned since the mages set it up. And you just went and stuck your head inside like a moron, hahaha!"

You glare at her, eyes still red. "Yeah yeah, laugh it up. Just you wait though, I'll get you back for this."

"Haha, yeah, yeah sure. Whatever helps you sleep at night. Anyways, that's how everything works, I'm going to go wait outside again while you get cleaned up." She leaves, closing the door behind her. You won't forget this, sooner or later you'll be sure to pay her back. But for now, you focus on getting yourself cleaned up and trying to forget the smell that just assaulted your nostrils.

After getting yourself cleaned up, you meet Erika outside your room. "Alright, that's settled then." She's still grinning from earlier. "Anywhere else you want to go see? We should have enough time to see one more area before we need to head down for dinner. That is, if you're planning on going that is."
