What's that? It's 3 AM?

Lovely time to start a quest.

Work that day had been... work.

Full of little tiny events, that while detailed in and of themselves, weren't really all that remarkable. In other words, it was routine. A hundred pieces of equally important minutiae, blending together to form the memory equivalent of white noise.

It paid decently at least.

But you couldn't help but feel like something was missing.

When you're a child, you're told you can grow up to be anything. A scientist, a doctor, even the President of the United States. You look forward to growing up, to becoming awesome. To doing something amazing.

Filing form J-79 in accordance with CF 40-41 is almost the complete opposite of that.

Having to deal with shitty office politics giving you a supervisor who wants to be promoted and damn anyone underneath him for daring to want a life outside the company? Shitty.

You'd have liked to quit... But where would you have gone that you wouldn't be doing the same thing somewhere else? At least there you knew what annoyances lurk in the shadows, sharpening their pencils to write bad performance reports.

But then, something changed.

I was tempted to just adapt the opening monologue straight up, but that would've been too lazy in my opinion.

Looking back, it seems like chance.

Simple happenstance, and nothing more.

Ordinarily, you don't think you'd have talked much with a person you didn't know. Especially if they were wearing a cloak. But it was a cool evening, the train was already late, and you were anxious to pass the handful of minutes.

"Cool night, isn't it?" They blinked. Not that you could see their eyes beneath, but the way the shifted surprised you.

"That it is!" She chirped back, remarkably cheery sounding to your ears.

The pair of you chatted for a moment. Nothing but small talk, really. How the weather was so very strange that week (that heatwave followed by the bizarre freeze), the debatable fashion choices made by one of the other women on the platform (green hair styled like a leaf? And dressed like that, she was certainly going to be cold later, though you keep your thoughts about her maybe being a prostitute to yourself), and even touch a little on politics.

You honestly didn't pay attention to whoever the mayor was usually, but given how she toured the offices the other day and gave a small speech you at least got a look at her. You'd honestly thought that the mayor was a guy in his fifties, not some super-model looking woman.

With each passing topic, little miss Cloak's invisible smile seemed to get a little bit wider.

Then, she popped a strange question.

"Say, do you think you'd make a good villain?"

That time, you were the one to blink. Where did that come from, you wondered?

"There's lot of stories like that, you know? Where the hero is someone ordinary summoned to another world, or chosen by some strange artifact. Or is lucky enough to meet someone at just the right time. If the heroes can do it, why not the bad guys too?"

That made sense.

You turned the question over in your head.

>>

Hard to say, filling out paperwork doesn't seem to be the most wanted skill for a villain, but on the other hand everything's better than your current Job. And maybe you'd be able to finaly leave your mark on the world.

"In order to hear an answer, please fill out form J-35 and add a twofold F7 to that. I'm a bureaucrat, I already am one, technically."

You laughed. And were a little surprised when the girl chuckled a little as well.

An odd list you remembered reading online years ago coming to mind, and you ended talking a little more.

"Well, I know enough to know that you never turn into a snake, because it doesn't help. Puts me a cut above the villains in most of the stories. So yeah, sure, I could make a good villain if I suddenly woke up in another world. But it won't happen." You sighed, almost wistful

"Nothing amazing ever happens here. Everything is ordinary."

"Is it really? I wonder..." Cloak remarked, oddly happy sounding.

You exchanged a few more pleasantries, before the train pulled into the station and you said your goodbyes.

And, for three days, you didn't think anything more of it.

Just a strange conversation on a cool evening.

Well, until you were 'recruited'.

A man's home is his castle.

And you're lucky enough to own yours.

It was small, just an ordinary ranch, in a neighborhood full of them. Entirely unremarkable. It had belonged to one of your great uncles, a man who you barely remember. A childless man, he passed the house to the family on his death.

As the only one who lived anywhere near there, it ended up falling to you.

The lights are off, making the house appear almost unusually dark in the shadows of the evening. The door is locked, and you didn't see any windows broken in the front.

So, you think your response to flipping the light-switch and seeing a complete stranger sitting in your favorite chair is perhaps justified.

Judging from the woman's expression, she doesn't really think so, though.

Tails...

Setting aside the archaic kimono that rested just below her shoulders to show off how much of a bra she's not wearing to support her massive chest, they're what grabbed your attention.

Five big, fluffy tails.

They curled and arched in the room, slowly shifting and twisting like living things with minds of their own. That also happened to be massive golden fluffy pillows. It kind of made you want to touch them, just to see what they feel like.

Except for one small problem.

They're attached to a woman with tall, peaked animal ears poking out from her head.

The angry eyes with animalistic pupils didn't really do much to reassure you either.

A small portion of your brain wanted to say that there's no way this could be real. Fox-girls don't exist. That you'd been reading way too much of those Japanese comic books of yours.

The other part pointed out that if this is a hallucination, you'd likely suddenly developed a serious mental condition, and were likely to die very soon of an exotic brain disease. If it was real, then you weren't dying.

Alternatively, you'd been drugged.

Since none of these options appeal to you, the only choice was to take the 'not dying or drugged' assumption and roll with it, because the other ones were horrible.

You asked, a little more politely this time, what she was doing in your house.

"I'm here to make you my Servant." She said without an instant of hesitation. "I was told you were both honest and had potential, although I'll be the first to admit the Shroud has a twisted sense of humor." Her gaze shifts to admire your dwelling.

"I'll admit it's... fairly rustic, but this house is situated atop quite a confluence of magic. It's hardly the most fitting place for one such as me to spend their time, but rarely do needs match wants, I suppose." And now she's planning to move in.

You wondered if she was even going to introduce herself.

"Shouldn't the host introduce themselves to the guest first?"

"Smith." You said almost automatically. "John Smith."

"Yuzuruha." She replied, and you nodded because you had no intention of allowing how weird that name sounds get in the way of being polite.

"Can I get you something to drink?" A casual offer. She shook her head, and made a gesture for you to take a seat on the couch.

"I thank you for the offer, but my time is limited." And so she began her explanation.

It seemed that the energy she'd spent a good portion of the last millennium collecting for her ascension to godhood was stolen away by a group of teenage exorcists in abnormally tiny skirts. Who then 'purified' her hoshi no tama. The resulting spiritual injuries and loss of power knocked her down from nine tails to five.

Ordinarily, she could forgive an over-zealous exorcist or two. Ordinarily, she'd simply shrug, 'be defeated' and be on her merry way.

Ordinarily, she hadn't just lost almost five hundred years worth of collected power and get four of her own tails forcibly removed, not less than five years from her window to full on god-hood.

So, she's decided 'ordinarily' can go sit in a corner and fuck itself.

She didn't phrase it that vulgarly of course, but her flowery descriptions do such a good job of carrying the acid in her tone, they practically scorch the floor.

She then went on to explain your role in this little misadventure. For one, your house is situated atop some large intersections of naturally flowing magic. This would speed her recovery, while you, having been recommended to her by someone named Shroud, would gather life-force for her.

You wondered what on earth could make her think you could do something like that.

"You will be wielding my authority, and giving directives to my underlings whilst I recover."

On top of allowing her to not advertise just how much weaker she'd been rendered by the attack, her messenger being a completely normal human lent them a level of protection.

A hero won't hesitate to fight a monster, after all. But a completely ordinary seeming human?

She doubted that even if they made the connection, they'd be able to do anything other then try to sway you to the side of 'Justice' with words.

Put simply, you'd take command of her forces in the city and manage their operations to gather energy and ferry said energy from there to your home so that she could recover.

"The health benefits are quite amazing. You see, if you accept, you don't spontaneously die in a completely preventable house-fire."

"But in the event you are injured in the line of duty, we do have access to the resources to ensure that you recover."

>>38372139

> What do I get out of this?

My underlings are generally competent enough on their own to manage their operations without direct input, but may require guidance to prevent themselves from stepping on one another's toes. This is, of course in addition to ensuring that we do not lose more to those annoying exorcists."

>what in the unlikely case the don't just want to talk it out how would I protect myself?

"It would be considered a spat among mortals. They'd be limited to mortal means and mortal recourse. In that case, all you would need to do is get the police involved." A lazy smirk settled on her lips. "That would be amusing all on it's own, I think."

>Also will it take another 500 years for her to recover?

"Hardly." She shook her head, even as her tail's thrashing seemed to grow agitated for a brief moment. "When they... removed them, they couldn't be destroyed. More then likely they were dispelled into the local area, or hidden somewhere. Recovering them or their component energy would allow me to recover."

"Quite simply, I don't." She forced herself not to move, not to allow her body to become any more tense, to simply remain relaxed. "I had planned to simply have you manage my organization until I recovered. They represent a threat that would be very dangerous with to handle directly. When I resumed my position, I would eliminate that threat." Her eyes opened and her smile was razor sharp. "In the event you are capable of eliminating any at all, I could care less as to the means and method. Merely that you keep collateral damage limited."

>>38372202

>What does gathering life force entail? How do we obtain it exactly?

"Humans produce life force naturally." She explained. "More if they are frenzied, or passionate about something. We have simply positioned ourselves over the years to be in places where passions and frenzies occur more naturally, and take the energy from there. Most of my associates are capable of storing the energy inside a physical medium. A stone, or perhaps a small vial. From there, you take it to me."

>>38372292

>What's your endgame?

"To crush the exorcists, see them and their ilk drive before me, and to drink their desperate lamentations." She chuckles. "But more seriously, I mean to complete my ascension. It will be my retirement from this mortal world, and you will very likely not perceive any change in your day to day life. Gods have little reason to trouble themselves with the mortal world, after all."

A great deal of arrangements, whether they be for physical objects you covet, certain misdeeds to those that have wronged you, or even indulging in carnal pleasures, they can all be dealt with."

Nope, accept the job. What is the first task?
>>
>>38373498
Nope we got ourselves a deal.
>>
>>38373498
who would we be working with? subordinates? peers? How would we get in contact with them.
>>
>>38373498
Nope. Sounds like a fun career change to me. And that pay is nice too.
>>
>>38373498
Silently mouth "fifty thousand a week" to ourself. Then, "What is thy bidding, my master? Heh. I've always wanted to say that."

One of the most immediate changes we should make is having all businesses have 'All who enter agree to have their energy drained' signs put up. So we have legal avenues to arrest any magical girls.

>Apologize for our lack of respect and accept the job

>>38373670

I agree with this
>>
>>38373670
Can we formulate that in a way that won't make ppl think we are crazy?
>>
>>38373670
Do you really think the law is going to actually belive these Skirtorcist if they go about saying "He's helping a kitsune to recover the four tails we stole from her so that ace can become a god!" to them?
>>

She, I mean

"The Kitsune Corporation's staff reminds their beloved custommers that their venues may cost them a lot of energy. Please let the staff handle it and do not overtax yourself"
>>
>>38373848
thank you kind sir, this will do nicely.
>>
Altering it a bit.

"The Kitsune Corporation's staff reminds their beloved customers that their venues may be physically and mentally strenuous. Please inform the staff of any complications and please do not overtax yourself. We hope you enjoy your time here."
>>
>>38374024
>Insert catchy company jingle here
>>
>>38374024

I think we do need to have the word "energy" in it. Maybe "Please inform the staff of any complications resulting from a loss of energy" or something like that.

Though your wording is way more elegant.

At this point, you can think of no really sane option that involves saying no.

Partly because you're not seeing a lot of downsides to accepting, while rejecting means likely instantaneous death.

"Good." She nods.

"My assistant will be by in the morning at seven AM sharp to pick you up and ensure you are capable enough to perform this job. In the event you prove incapable, she'll undertake a course to ensure that you either improve or, in the event that you continually fail to meet expectations, that you'll be properly disposed of. That being said, good night."

And with a puff, she seemed to disappear, leaving only a tiny snoozing ball of fuzz in her place.

... You really wonder just what you got yourself into.

Indeed.

This was kind of supposed to be a one-off, but fuck if shit didn't keep going wrong on top of that.

Burned breakfast between updates too.

I'm just going to call it quits here for the day while I'm still ahead on things.

As usual, I'll be lingering to answer questions and take comments , as well as to shoot myself in the foot for not planning this shit out properly.
>>
>>38375726
I enjoyed it. All our questions slowed it down perhaps, but at least we know what's going on (if only a little).

Looking forward to the next one.

'Fraid not. You see, each route is occurring more or less simultaneously.

Each route would have a different focus. Fox-Route is more about defending your infrastructure while managing a criminal empire.

Cloak-Route would've been more discreet espionage, taking advantage of the fact that you are a normal human to gather intelligence on the sudden congregation of exorcists, magical girls, and various other 'Forces of Justice' moving in, on top of the goings on between other factions.

Meanwhile, mechamusume route would've been the closest to straight-up villain, what with you playing an emerging faction carving out their empire.
>>
>>38375726

It was pretty nice. Your writing is a bit dry, but nothing major, and I enjoyed this thread.

Hope we'll see more of this Quest

damn as much as i enjoy the fluffy tails if i knew what each one persons rote was about i would have gone with the robot just because i love building empires but im ok with this.

>>38375726
I'm enjoying it so far. Setting up a twitter for updating when you intend to run the next instalment seems to be the standard nowadays.

I tried to keep my strong 'Rock' tone, but I couldn't keep it up properly beyond the OP.

I also ended up bouncing between different ideas for how you were supposed to gather energy, before settling on just leaving it to your underlings in a massive criminal organization.

But this also paved the way for your stronger influence and benefits package, while helping me refine what each faction was based around.
>>
>>38375978

While I agree the robutt route would've been interesting, this does play to our strengths. Can you imagine a young set of shounen heroes trying to stop the evil supernatural threat from ascending to Godhood, only to run into a wall of paperwork, legal obligations and completely innocent policemen?

>Okay, while that's incredibly adorable, I'm going to need you kids to fill out these Twelve-Thirteens in triplicate so I can get you the GH-791. Then, when you've got three of those, you'll need to fill those out too, as it's a triplicate matter as well, so you can get a J-55. Now, the J-55's a bit tricky and honestly isn't needed, but you do need to submit one for another process which nets you the very much required KP0-22...

And then after about five minutes more of just explaining that shit, they'll be begging for mercy. We're essentially the magical double!evil IRS.
>>
>>38375909
This should be fun. We could possibly come to an arrangement with the espionage faction. I believe the robos will more than likely be an antagonist to us though, since it sounds like they want this turf.

Yokai vs Robots sounds fun though.
>>
>>38376108
shouldn't be much of a problem ,unless we are compeeting for the same resurces, which i doubt
>>
>>38376061
so next session will be banana training from hell?
and then we maybe can get worj´king on getting shit done.
>>
>>38376150
Well, I think it also depends on what they are planning with humans (or life in general).

If they go around killing humans, that lowers the amount of potential life force for us to gather. And I don't think we can get said life force from them robots as substitute either.
>>
>>38376241
Why do ppl always assume intelligent Robots are out to kill all life, or at least all humans?
>>
>>38376150

Well, as Spectral points out, youkai feed on life force from humans. Robots would very likely not make that.

There is, of course, also the point that when it comes to building them, you get what you put into it. A fit human is better then a weak human.

And, naturally, a youkai is better then a human.
>>
>>38376425
eh wait are we talking robots or cyborgs?
>>
>>38376378
I didn't say they are. I pointed it out as a possibility.

Until we find out, there is always the chance.

Mechamusume.

So, technically cyborgs. But also androids.
>>
>>38376523
Now i'm regretting i didn't go for the robots.
>>
>>38376523
Hmmmm. If the Robots/Cyborgs/MechaMusume's objective is to, say, uplift humanity to immortal but-technically-not-living bodies, that would be a nice dilemma between what can arguable be overall good for humanity (functional immorality), vs. overall bad (draining of life energy).
