You are Siegfried Schmidt, a former guard from the city of Morsland. Due to various circumstances, you have become the temporary wielder of Galadriel, a holy sword which houses a powerful (and kind of rude) angel.

You had just decided to accompany the two representatives from the church who came here with Galadriel back to the White Watchtower, a fortress to the east which in the days of the crusade was a major defense point against the invading demons. But before you did that, you decided to go and tell those close to you that you were leaving, starting with your family.

You step inside your old home, the smell of cooking luring you to the kitchen. Your mother, Katrina Schmidt, is just setting the table. Along with her you see your sisters husband, Fredrick, still wearing his armor. Like you, Fredrick is a guard, though he has the benefit of being the Captain's son. He's a good man, and it was through his recommendation that you were able to become a guard in the first place.

Your father, Gerhard Schmidt, follows from behind you, taking his seat at the head of the table. "Katrina, look who decided to come and pay us a visit." he says, smiling.

You mother looks up from what she was doing and smiles. "Siegfried, how nice of you to join us. Come on, take a seat, I'll grab another plate for you."

You oblige, taking a seat next to your father and setting the can you'd been using to help support yourself next to you. Your mother comes back with a large plate full of warm ham and bread for everyone, and a plate and silverware for you.

>"Thank you mom. Sorry I haven't come to visit lately."
>"Hello Fredrick, just come back from patrol?"

"Thank you mom. Sorry I haven't come to visit lately."

"Well then perhaps you should have stopped by to visit sooner!" you mother says, feigning anger. You smile, thinking of how long it's been since you came to visit. You think it's been a month and a half since you last came to visit your family, not because you didn't want to, but because work made it hard to visit sometimes.

"It couldn't hurt you to stop by for a meal every now and then. You know we enjoy having you over." your father says, already working on his cooked ham.

"Just means there's more for me when I come to visit then." Fredrick jokes, causing both your parents to chuckle.

"You know how work is. I'd like to stop by more often, but work keeps me busy." You offer. Around this time, you notice there is another plate lying empty next to Fredrick. "Where's Sarah? Is she not here today?"

"She's just taking care of the tools in the workshop real quick." your father tells you, still eating his ham. "She's learned a lot since I started teaching her. Reminds me a lot of when I used to teach you."

"That's good for her then." you say, before getting started on your own ham. Originally, you were supposed to inherit your father's workshop, but you decided life as a blacksmith didn't quite suit you. In the end, you became part of the city guard instead, so your sister Sarah has been learning from your father in your place. You'd heard she recently passed the test to become a Journeyman.

"At the rate she's learning, I'm sure it won't be long before she passes her Master's examination as well!" your father says proudly. "But what about you son? How has life in the guard been treating you lately?"

>"Good enough I suppose. What about you Fredrick?" Avoid the question.

"Well, it was fine...until the festival, at least."

Everyone looks at you a little confused. "The festival?" Fredrick asks. "I'd heard something happened at the festival while I was gone. What happened?"

You explain to them the details of what happened, from the fight with Andras to Galadriel, trying to tone down the results of said fight so as not to scare them. You also decide to leave out the part where you spoke to Galadriel, where she deemed you only a temporary wielder.

At first they think you're joking, and you have to show them the sword yourself. The plain dagger at your hip changes into a golden longsword at your request, leaving them all very quiet.

"I'm leaving with the church's representatives for the White Watchtower the day after tomorrow." you conclude.

At first, no one says anything. Finally your father speaks up. "This is...this is a lot to take in so suddenly, son. Do you know how long you'll be there?"

You shake your head. "I don't know for sure. But I will come back at some point, even if it's only to visit."

"I should go fetch Sarah." You mother says solemnly. "She should probably hear this too."

"I'll go with you." Fredrick offers, before the both of them disappear into the workshop, leaving you and your father alone at the table.

At first, no one says anything. You've already said everything you needed to say, and it looks like he's still trying to process it all. Finally after a very long silence, he speaks.

"Son, would you mind setting the sword on the table?" he says, clearing a spot. "I want to take a look at this sword myself."

"Sure" you tell him, setting Galadriel down on the table. "It's quality workmanship, don't worry. No clue what the gold is, but it's not regular gold. Way too solid. The silver might be platinum, but that's a bit of a stretch."

He grunts in response, something he does when he's busy smithing. He tries to lift it for a better view, but gives up when the sword won't budge. Instead he leans in to examine the sword closely, occasionally asking you to turn it over or hold it at a certain angle.

After that he reaches over and picks up a spoon from the table, giving the sword's blade a gentle knock with it. The sound is peculiar, not like the normal sound of metal hitting metal. It sounds less like a clang and more like a small bell ringing. Something easily missed by someone not experienced with the sound of metal striking metal.

"Not platinum" he says, sitting up and crossing his arms. "Not gold neither, like you said. To be honest, I don't think I've ever seen metal like this before."

"Do you know anyone who might know what it is?" you ask.

He shakes his head. "No, I doubt it. Whatever it is, I think it's something a priest would know more about than an average smith. I can tell one thing though; it's very well made. Something I can trust my son's life with." He turns to you, a serious look on his face. "Son, I don't know why you got caught up in all this, I'd honestly prefer you didn't have to go to the Watchtower. But if that's your decision, then I'll stand by you with it, just as I always have."

"Thank you." you say, relieved your father is taking this as well as he is.

"Just make me two promises." He says, holding two fingers up. "The first, that you'll come back to visit us from time to time. And the second, that you'll stay safe so you'll be -able- to come back and visit us again."

In the back of your mind, you're thankful that Daniel promised you wouldn't have to do anything too dangerous at the watchtower against your will. "I promise." you tell him.

He smiles, sitting back down. You move Galadriel off the table and put it back onto your belt, once again in dagger form. He moves the plates and silverware back to where they originally belonged. "Good. Now then, enough with the gloomy talk! If this is the last night you'll be spending with us for a while, it's best we not think about all that mess and enjoy ourselves now."

Shortly after, your mother and Fredrick come back with your sister, still covered in soot like your father. They all ask you a few questions, but for the most part everything goes back to normal, with everyone talking happily and enjoying their meal.

After the meal is finished, you start to make your way back outside. Before you do though, your father stops you.

"Before you go, would you mind taking this?" he says, offering you a very well-made shield. "It was the shield I made to show the guild back when I was taking my Master's examination. It's one of my finer works, and I'd like you to take it with you when you go to the watchtower."

What type of weapons should we focus on? shield and sword, dual wield, two-handed...?

Everything. Switching mid fight will throw opponents off.

The question is, can we change it mid-swing? Someone bracing for a longsword to hit them and suddenly getting slammed by a mace would really suck for them.

"I will, thank you." You tell him, taking the shield and strapping it to your arm.

He smiles, and pulls you in for one last bear-hug. "You'll do fine out there, I know it."

Before you leave, you give your mother and sister a hug as well, and exchange a firm handshake with Fredrick. You will miss them all after you leave for the Watchtower, but you are glad they have faith in you.

Stepping back outside, shield strapped to your left arm and holding onto your cane with the right, you make your way back into the streets. It's night time now, you were planning to speak with the Captain and Reinhardt about you leaving, but they will probably be asleep now. You decide to do it tomorrow, heading back to Arniel's shop, where you'd been resting since the fight with Andras.

The next morning arrives, you are awakened by the light shining through your window. You pull yourself out of bed and get changed. Galadriel seems to have shifted back to it's normal sword form while you were asleep, just as she said it would when you visited her yesterday. After you shift it back to it's inconspicuous dagger form, you ponder what you should do now. You feel you can walk without your cane now, so you could probably run some errands before heading to the guard post where Reinhardt and the Captain will be if you wanted. You remember asking Erika to accompany you there so your story would have some validity with the captain, so you make it a point to go find her at the church first before you do head to the guard post.

>Go get Erika now, you want to head straight to the guard post

You decide it's best to go get Erika and head to the guard post first thing, so you head out to the church to find her.

The local church, a cathedral said to have been here almost as long as the town itself, is an amazing sight as always. Stained glass paintings of scenes from the Creation decorate it, from the birth of men by Aureus to the final confrontation between Aureus and his brother Malal. You step inside, asking the local priests about an old priest in a white cassock and a woman with red hair and white armor. They direct you to the altar, where Erika can be found praying. You wait for her to finish before walking up to her.

"Morning Erika. I was about to head to the guard post to break the news to the captain, are you free yet?"

"Oh, right, almost forgot you wanted me to tag along for that. Sure, I just finished my morning prayers, so I can go."

"That's good." You tell her. "The sooner we get there and tell the captain , the better."

A short walk from the church later, you find yourself inside the guard post. You walk past a few guards who are just checking in for their shift, and ask them where you could find Reinhardt and Captain Gregory. When they tell you they're both in the captain's office, you wonder if Reinhardt is already speaking with the captain about what happened now.

When you arrive at the captain's office, you hear people talking inside. Well, one's talking at least, the other is shouting. The captain tends to do that a lot, not just when he's mad. The man has a very loud voice, one he doesn't mind using as you've learned.

>Wait for them to finish. The captain hates to be interrupted.
>Knock now. At least with Erika here he won't be too mad. Hopefully.

The last time someone interrupted the captain without a really good reason it didn't end well, Reinhardt could attest to that. So you decide to wait outside with Erika until they're finished.

You can't quite make out what each side is saying, but you can tell the captain isn't very happy. Erika listens to it all with a face of concern. "Is your captain always like this?"

"Only when he's in a bad mood." You answer. "And he usually is."

After a bit of waiting, the door finally opens and Reinhardt walks out, nearly bumping into the two of you.

"Whoa, watch where you- oh wait, Siegfried? Didn't expect you to be walking around again so soon."

"Arniel did a good job." you tell him. "Daniel helped too."

"Must have for you to be walking already. And here I thought you might be able to get out of using that damn sword by pretending to be crippled."

"Thought never occurred to me." you jest. "Maybe I should have tried that actually."

"It still wouldn't help you with the captain. he tells you, pointing backwards at the captain's now-closed door. "That man's been positively livid after the incident. I tried to explain what happened, but he doesn't believe me."

"Actually, that's what I came here to speak with him with. You should probably come in too, you should hear this as well."

He sighs. "Great. double meeting with the captain. Just what I needed to start my morning.

You walk up to the door to the captain's office and knock twice. A moment later, the door is practically flung open, and you find yourself face-to-chest with the captain. The captain is a very large and imposing man, wearing plate armor bearing the town's heraldry and carrying a two-handed axe on his back.

"Reinhardt, I told you for the last time I-" he starts to yell, before noticing there are three of you standing there.

"Ah, Siegfried. About time you checked in. Step on in, I've been meaning to have a word with you about what happened at the festival." You gulp. That's the captain's "Step inside, I'm going to yell at you until your ears bleed." tone.

"Uh, sir, I actually came here to talk about that too. I actually brought someone along with me, and Reinhardt should be here for this too."

He turns his gaze back to Reinhardt and Erika, then back to you. "Fine then. All of you, come inside. I want an explanation for everything that happened three days ago and I want it now."

The three of you step inside the captains office together. You and Reinhardt stand at attention, while Erika takes a seat. The captain heads to his desk and takes a seat as well.

"Now then. Siegfried, how about you start by telling me just what the hell happened in my stadium during the festival."

----------------
You recount everything that happened during the festival and everything that happened after. The battle with Andras, picking up Galadriel, being a temporary champion and, most importantly, that you are leaving to go to the Watchtower starting tomorrow.
>>
>>38363183
Reinhardt tries and fails not to laugh at the part about being a temporary champion, earning a dirty look from the captain. When you mention that you will be leaving for the Watchtower, however, he stares at you in disbelief.

"Wait, hold on, you're actually going with these people?" he asks you incredulously.

The captain, who has been listening to your story with a stony demeanor, looks over to Erika. "Is everything he just said true ma'am?" he asks.

"Yes, everything from Andras to the sword is true." She says.

He nods, then looks at you. It feels like he's sizing you up, or you suppose sizing you down given his huge stature.

"Then if a representative from the Watchtower is willing to confirm it, I'm willing to believe it." He says, looking between you and Reinhardt. "What everyone just heard is not to be repeated by any of you to anyone. Is that clear?"

You and Reinhardt both nod.

"Good. Then get out of my office. Reinhardt, you should be on duty, and Siegfried you should be getting ready for your journey to the Watchtower. You can expect to have your job back when and if you return, but you better do your best to watch over that sword from now on. I won't have anyone saying that the man who lost Galadriel to the forces of Malaphas came from my city. Dismissed."

You both head outside, and immediately Reinhardt turns back to you. "You're seriously going to the Watchtower? Are you out of your damn mind?"

>"Maybe. But hey, it probably pays better than here."

"Uh huh, and what if no one better comes along? It's been two hundred years since that sword chose someone Sieg. Two hundred years. How do you know you won't be stuck with it your whole life?"

"You worry too much man. Besides, it's not like I'm getting sucked into a new crusade."

He sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose in frustration. "If the thing doesn't even want you to use her the whole time, why can't you just say 'no thanks' and give it back?"

"Galadriel's already chosen him. There's nothing we can do." Erika intervenes. "And besides, it should be an honor to carry Galadriel, even if it's only temporary."

"'Honor' she says." Reinhardt mocks, before shrugging. "Look man, if you really want to follow through with this crap, go right ahead. Just do me a favor and don't get yourself hurt out there, that thing's practically cursed."

Erika doesn't seem too happy with that last comment, but you intervene before she can say anything. "Hey, it's just for a bit. I mean, come on. It's me! We'll probably find someone better suited on the way there and I'll come back with a bitching story to woo the tavern girls with."

He chuckles, finally lightening up a bit. "You're the only person who would take something like this so lightly you'd use it on tavern wenches." As he says this, he comes to a realization. "Hey, there's an idea! Why don't we head out to the tavern one last time while you're in town? "Wait, me?" She asks, pointing to herself. "Why?"

"Well if we're going to be working together, might as well start off by drinking together."

She shrugs. "I...guess? I've never really been to a tavern before, but I guess it couldn't hurt." Wait, did she just say she's never been to a tavern before?

Reinhardt looks at you, his expression says "Are you sure you want to bring her?" You reply with your own "It's fine." expression, and he shrugs.

"Well if you've never been to one before, then that's all the more reason. Reinhardt, your shift ends around 5 right?"

"Yeah, same as usual. So let's all meet up at the tavern around 7 then."

"Sounds like a plan to me. We'll see you then." You tell him, before he has to leave for his shift.

You've got some time before 7, if you wanted you could go run some errands around now. Alternatively, you could just head back to Arniel's and rest until then. Erika is still here, you could ask her to come along if you wanted as well.

A spray bottle with holy water. It's basically a perfume bottle, and those have been around for a long time, right?

We aren't particularly educated in medicine, but maybe a first aid kit? splints, bandages, etc?

maybe a small hammer, to do that ring test if ever we find something that looks similar to Galadriel.

Another dagger, and have Galadriel copy it.

"Well, since we have time before heading to the tavern, I should probably grab some stuff from my house and buy some supplies. You're from the Watchtower, any suggestions for the trip or what I'll need when I get there?"

She thinks for a moment. "Well, let's see. For the trip, you're probably going to want some rations and a waterskin for the trip, a mess kit, a bedroll and a tent for when we make camp, and maybe a lantern and some oil. Once we actually get to the Watchtower though, they should have most of what you need there."

"What about some armor?" You ask, thinking of the scorched mess your old armor was left in after the fight with Andras.

She shakes her head. "The Watchtower has an armory. If you need something, you can probably get it there."

So some rations, a waterskin, a mess kit, a bedroll and tent, and a lantern with oil. You could probably purchase all of that in a kit that would cost probably around 10 gold. You have 30 gold in your coin purse, and you believe you have more at home.

"Let's make a stop by my house first then. I should have more gold stored there."

So, the two of you make your way to your house first, Erika waiting by the door while you rummage through your things. Not a lot of it will be particularly useful on the road, but you do scrounge together a backpack, some rope, a small knife, and another 20 gold, giving you 50 gold pieces total. You also find your great helm, which you remember your captain had you forgo the day of the festival.

With your things gathered, you head back outside where Erika is waiting. You head to the merchant's district together and you purchase

You decide to pick up the kit Erika recommended, as well as a few other things while you were at it. You pick up some medical supplies from Arniel's shop, remembering that discount Thalia mentioned before. Some healing potions, a first aid kit, some splints and some bandages. After that, you grab a map and a small hammer, thinking maybe if you ever come across material similar to Galadriel, you could use it to identify it. Finally, you stop by the church and buy a spray bottle of holy water.

"Wait a minute, you're a paladin aren't you? Can't you make holy water yourself?"

"Uh...not really. I've never really been any good with magic, so I can't really help you there."

Well drat. Thankfully, Daniel comes to save the day while you're there, and blesses a container of water for you at half price ("The church needs to make a little money, after all.")

Total, you end up paying 28 gold for the supplies, leaving you with 22 gold.

With all your supplies gathered, you drop your stuff off at Arniel's. There's about an hour to go until 7, so you are just about to leave for the tavern when you realize something.

"Uh, Erika? Are you planning to go to the tavern wearing plate?"

She looks at you, genuinely confused. "Is that not normal? What would I do if there were a sudden attack again, like at the festival?"

You suppose she was serious when she said she'd never been to a tavern before.

"No, it's not normal. Isn't that uncomfortable to wear all day anyways?"

She looks at you as though you had three heads for a moment. "...Sort of?" she says, more of a question than a statement.

You think of how you felt the one time the captain gave you an all-day shift as punishment for sleeping in one time, and how it felt wearing that chainmail all day and all knight. Something has to be up with this girl to not be bothered by that. Is everyone from the Watchtower like this?

"Look, I understand where you're coming from, but I don't think our black knight friend is going to be popping in for a quick drink, so I think it's safe to lose the armor."

"Then what am I supposed to wear there?"

"Street clothes, like any normal persona would."

"I...don't think I have any with me." Oh Aureus, this is going to take a while, isn't it?

"Look, just...just follow me, we'll get some normal clothes for you real quick."

Erika is confused, but follows. Quickly, you stop by a store and purchase some normal street clothes for Erika to wear. It's nothing fancy, but at least it won't weigh a ton or make the bartender think she's a mercenary or some other sort of troublemaker. There is a place in the store to change, and you wait outside while she does so. Other customers stop and look in confusion due to the loud CLANGing sound her platemail is making.

Eventually, she come out wearing normal clothes. She'd look like a normal citizen, if it weren't for the greatsword she's still carrying on her back.

"Is this better?" she asks. "I don't see what the point of this was, now if there's an attack of some kind I'll just be less effective."

>"Just go with it, you look good by the way."
>"There won't be another attack. You'll scare everyone in the bar if you just walk in fully clad in armor though."

"Just go with it, you look good by the way."

She eyes you suspiciously at first, before realizing you weren't trying to be snide. "Oh. Thanks? I still don't see why this is necessary."

"I guess that means I'm not going to get you to budge on the greatsword am I?"

"No." she answers immediately. Well, it was worth a shot at least.

"Just trust me on this. Now lets get going, Reinhardt will be wondering where we are if we don't get there soon."

With that, the two of you left after paying for the clothes (Erika payed). In front of the tavern, you saw Reinhardt waiting outside, wearing his usual off-duty clothes.

"I was starting to wonder if you'd show up." he jokes.

"Sorry, would have gotten here earlier but we had to make a quick stop." And by quick stop, you mean you had to educate this girl on why wearing heavy armor to a public bar isn't normal.

"Well, we're all here now, let's head inside. The place is packed tonight."

Indeed, the inside of the tavern is full of people. By the looks of it, not all of them are from Morsland, some are probably stragglers from the festival. The three of you find some seats together and wait for the barmaid to come around.

"The first round's on me." Reinhardt proclaims. "That way after you've gone off on your little adventure to the Watchtower, you can't say I've never done anything nice for you."

"How about the second round then?"

"Hey, I never said I was that nice."

You're here to have a good time, not to show off. Not yet, at the very least. You order some ale as well, which the barmaid brings back a few minutes later along with Erika's and Reinhardt's brandy.

"Let's have a toast." Reinhardt says, holding his brandy in the air. "To my unlucky friend Siegfried, and this new shitty adventure he's gotten himself caught up in."

You laugh. "And to my boring friend Reinhardt, doomed to work the long shift for the rest of his life."

"Well damn, when you put it that way I almost want to go with you."

"Great idea, we leave tomorrow morning."

"I said -almost-. I'm not ready to get skinned alive by demons just yet. Nice try though."

The two of you joke and laugh as you drink your booze, enjoying yourselves. Erika seems somewhat confused by your senses of humor, not saying much unless directly questioned.

"So." Reinhardt says, with his first round of brandy finished. "Not much of a start for a hero's tale now is it? Nearly killed by an angry demon, chosen by a magic sword because there's no better options, and spending the rest of the time you have left in town drinking to forget it all. Quite the hero you are, aren't you Sieg?"

"Humble beginnings friend. Of course when I go fight the lord of all demons even he will be just a temporary lord. Maybe I'll bring you his head as a souvenir."

Reinhardt almost spits out his drink from laughing. Even Erika chuckles at your sarcastic comment.

"Yeah, sure, and by the time you get back I'll be the king of Iseria too." he jokes. "Maybe if you tell him that he'll laugh himself to death and you won't have to fight him."

"Well I have been known for my amazing sense of humor."

"More like how full of shit you are." he says, waving the barmaid over for another round. "Tell you what, you ever bring me Malaphas' head, I might just pay for your second round."

You and Reinhardt continue to chat and joke. Meanwhile he continues to buy more booze for himself. It doesn't take long before he's completely drunk, and eying some of the tavern wenches.

"Hey." he says, his speech slightly slurred by intoxication. "I think I'm gonna go talk with the ladies over there, tell them I'm best friends with the temporary hero that'll kill Malaphas."

"Sure. Maybe they'll be drunk enough to actually believe you."

He smiles. "I'm not really gonna tell em that ya dumbass, captain would skin me alive."

"Hope you've got a good backup line for picking up wenches then."

"Please. I'm so handsome I don't even need to say nothin'"

"Good luck with that one."

"Luck ain't nothing to it. Just watch."

He stumbles away, off to woo the various wenches of the tavern. Or, more likely, to get slapped in the face a few times and forget it all happened in the morning. Good fun to watch.

After he leaves, you turn your attention back to Erika, who's been mostly quiet this whole time. You notice she's barely even touched her ale, despite Reinhardt already going through a few rounds of brandy himself. Come to think of it, you've only had one mug of ale yourself.

You tell the barmaid when she comes around again to bring you another round of ale. She obliges, and you hand her a gold coin as payment

"You see that?" you ask Erika, pointing over to Reinhardt talking with one of the wenches. "That right there is normal tavern behavior. Nobody getting hurt, all good fun."

She raises an eyebrow in confusion. "It's normal to get drunk and make a fool of yourself in a tavern?"

"Well some handle their booze more gracefully than others, but pretty much, yeah." You take a sip from your mug of ale as you say it, feeling your head start to get a little light. Nice and buzzed, enough to enjoy yourself without making a fool of yourself like dear old Reinhardt.

"I don't get the appeal." she says with a shrug. "Getting drunk, looking like an idiot, all the while completely unprepared for an attack. Do people really do this for fun?"

"Maybe if you actually drank some of your ale, you'd start to understand."

She looks into her mug, looking hesitant for a moment. Finally, she takes a deep breathe...and chugs the whole thing in one go.

"I said start, not down the whole thing at once."

"S-same difference." she says with a stutter, blinking her eyes as the taste of the ale hits her at once. "What does it matter if it's all at once or not?"

"Because you'll hurt yourself, that's why." You say, finishing the rest of your own mug. "Have you never drunken before either?"

"I have." she says defensively. "Just...don't remember much of it."

Oh boy, well that's a good sign.

"Now what? Should I try again?" she asks, already waving the barmaid over.

You let her buy another round from the barmaid, but this time you stop her before she can drink it.

"Don't just chug it all down at once this time. Drink it slower this time, let the buzz from the first one hit before really drinking this time."

She does as you say, taking only a small sip before setting the mug down again.

"Don't just guzzle down everything in your mug at once like you did last time, it's no wonder you can't remember much from the last times you drank if that's how you do it."

"Now that you mention it, I guess I do sort of see the difference." she says

"It makes a huge difference. How has no one ever taught you this before?"

She shrugs. "Booze isn't very common at the Watchtower. Every now and then Gunther will make something for everyone, but that doesn't happen very often."

"Gunther?"

"The cook at the Watchtower. He's a dwarf."

Right, of course. Well on the bright side, at least now you know it won't be a complete dry spell when you get to the Watchtower.

Erika takes a few more sips from her mug. Looks like she's learning at least, that's a start. Eventually, she finishes her drink, more buzzed than you are, but at least she's not as bad as Reinhardt, who you see from the corner of your eye being slapped by another one of the wenches. If only he learned as quickly.

"So." Erika says, mug now empty. "I've been meaning to ask. Why are you so unhappy about carrying Galadriel?" She slurs the name of your new sword, making you take a second to understand what she's saying. "I mean, do you know how many people back at the Watchtower would kill to be in your position?"

"I guess that's fair." she says, looking down at her mug. "But ya know, it's not just about the glory. There's still people who live in the Forsaken Lands, and we get reports of them kidnapping more from the border time to time." You can tell she's trying hard to sound comprehensible, though she still slurs some of her words. "It might be dangerous, but I dunno. Doing nothing doesn't sit right with me. Doesn't with anyone else at the Watchtower either."

You think about what she said for a moment. True, there are still people that have to live in the Forsaken Lands, but still, is it really worth all the trouble the past crusades brought about?

"Maybe you're right. But I'm still just a guard. I don't like the idea of getting forced into this whole thing because some angel in a sword decided 'I'll do.'"

"So find someone better for it then." Erika says, as though it were that simple. "Besides, it's not like Daniel's going to force you onto the front lines. You're just sitting in the watchtower for the most part."

That is true. At least you're not being forced onto the front lines because of the sword.

She chuckles. "Alright, well, let's see. I guess the direct answer is because they saved me when I was a kid."

"Really now? What happened?"

"You remember those stories of kids getting kidnapped when they wander too close to the Forsaken Lands? Well, I was one of those."

"Why were you even anywhere close to the Forsaken Lands?" you ask. Morsland has the benefit of being far away from the border, but even you'd heard stories of parents warning their kids never to stray too close to the border. Demons sometimes notice them or some other poor soul who wandered too close and steal them away.

"It's a long story. All you need to know is I wandered to close, and one of them swooped in and carried me away."

"And I guess this is the part of the story where someone from the Watchtower shoots the demon down?"

She nods. "It was Daniel, actually. It was a long time ago, I was 8 then. He doesn't actually go on patrol like the rest of us anymore, but back then he did. I was lucky he was passing by when it happened, otherwise I'd probably be in the Forsaken Lands right now."

"And that's why you joined them then?"

She nods. "I owed Daniel a lot. Joining the Watchtower just seemed like a natural choice."

"Okay I guess. You still didn't say why you were close to the border in the first place."

She sighs. "I think that's a story for another time."

You shrug. "Fair enough. In that case, on to my second question. Back in the arena with Andras, when I snuck up behind him and stabbed him from behind. Why did you get so angry? I didn't do anything wrong."

"Right. Sorry about that. It was stupid, both the fact I yelled at you and the reason why."

"Never doubted that. But out of curiosity, what was the reason behind it?"

"Well...like Daniel said, I still have a lot to prove now that I'm fresh out of initiatehood. I guess I thought if I could beat Andras, that would be a big step in the right direction. That and Galadriel was right there, so maybe I thought she'd have picked me if I beat him?"

"I wish it had."

She laughs. "Right. So while I was thinking that, getting ready for the biggest fight of my life, suddenly there's just a sword sticking out of Andras' head, and there you were standing right behind him."

>"Well shit, maybe I should have let you fight him on your own then. Maybe then the sword would have picked you over me."
>"I hope you realize just how dumb that idea was now. Andras was way out of both our leagues."
>"Well hey, if you want to look good in front of Galadriel, by all means, I'm sure her expectations are much lower after meeting me."

"You know, even though it was extremely life threatening, those were some hilariously ridiculous series of events looking back on them."

"I guess they were actually." She laughs. "One moment I'm fighting for my life, and the next some self-proclaimed 'jackass with a sword' is standing over Andras with a sword wedged in his head."

"Yeah, must have looked even funnier from where you were standing."

"It would have. If I hadn't been so mad about being shown up at the time."

You pull out the sheathed dagger on your belt and set it on the table. "Well hey, if you want to look good in front of Galadriel, by all means, I'm sure her expectations are much lower after meeting me."

She looks at the dagger carefully, before reaching a cautious hand out towards it. Sure enough though, when she tries to lift it, it doesn't budge even in it's dagger form.

"Figures." she says, shaking her head. You think you hear a little bitterness in her voice, but only a tinge.

"Well don't worry about it." You tell her, putting the dagger back on your belt. "Her expectations are ridiculous anyways. She's really kind of a bit-"

Before you can finish that thought, the sound of fighting can be heard in the tavern. You lean out of your seat a bit and see that there are currently two people, probably drunk, pushing each other around, while a crowd starts to gather. Bar fight, nice.

"What's going on?" Erika asks

"Just a tavern brawl."

"Tavern fight? What happened to 'nobody getting hurt, all good fun'?"

"Well these tend to happen when you get two people with bad tempers and too much booze. Can't really be helped."

"By 'nobody getting hurt' I sort of meant 'nobody getting killed or maimed' you know. Come morning they'll wake up with nothing but a few bruises and a raging hangover, probably."

She looks a little conflicted at first, but in the end she just shrugs and watches as well.

The one on the right, an elven man with blonde hair, and the one on the left, a human man with black hair and the start of a beard, continue to hurl insults at each other, punctuated with shoving. Eventually the human swings first, smacking the elf square in the jaw. The elf then retaliates with a hard knee to the human's gut. After that they grapple each other, trying to push the other one down, but end up knocking each other off balance, right into one of the tables. A minute passes and neither get up. You think you hear snoring coming from one of them.

"See, like I said, they'll wake up in the morning with nothing but a few bruises and a hangover."

She shrugs. "I suppose."

You spend more time chatting with Erika before finally the tavern owner is ready to lock up for the night. He asks that everybody who doesn't have a room rented show themselves out, and so most of the bar's patrons shuffle outside.

You don't see Reinhardt anywhere outside. For a moment, you wonder if he just got tired and left early, but you distinctly remember seeing him talking to one of the wenches not long ago. Maybe he got lucky, who knows. He probably won't remember tomorrow either way honestly.

"Do you see Reinhardt anywhere?" Erika asks.

"No, I don't think he'll be coming out actually. He's probably rented a room for the night."

"Why? Something wrong with his house?"

"Sure. Let's go with that."
>>

The two of you walk together back to the church, chatting some more along the way.

"You know, I think I'm starting to see the appeal in taverns now." She says when you arrive at the church.

>"Well that's good. We'll have to drink again some time."
>"It was fun. You're a lot less rude when you're drunk."
>"Just don't forget what I told taught you today. You really shouldn't be chugging booze the way you were earlier."

Seems like it. Let's bump the thread a bit so it doesn't die. He'll probably wake up in 4-5 hours anyway. Also Red is too pure. We should daughter-zone her.

I'm more interested in a drunk one-night fucking, a few months of awkwardness, and then a gradual friendship leading up to a long-term marriage.
>>
>>38371227
Sorry. If you want that kind of magical realm then post your ''other choices'' when OP gets to writing again. Otherwise, you're a virgin aren't you? Chicks kind of dig the big protective brother type (i've used this at a decent success rate of 80% to get it but you have to be patient and hold back).
>>
>>38371271
Actually, that's how me and my current girlfriend met. We were friends for a week, went out drinking, fucked, and slowly rebuilt a serious, longer term friendship and relationship.
>>
>>38371297
Oh. Well good for you then and sorry about calling you a virgin. Anyway can we rather discuss the HolySwordQuest?
What kind of weapons would you suggest for our protag to shift his sword into?
I for one want to see him using a quarterstaff.
>>
>>38371353
Trident does not get enough action.
>>
>>38371454
Ah how about that Korean trident spear?
It's used like a halberd and is the same lenght as a proper quarterstaff to ensure that it's easy to wield. Koreans stoped using it after some lunatic developed the chinese 5man formation further and replaced the 2 spears with those bamboo trees whose branch tips were laced with blades.
>>
>>38371509
Oooo, those sound like fun. Would be a nice little add-on to the halberd.
>>
>>38371547
Well it's great for hooking an opponents weapon , easy to wield etc. We can make Sieg into the good guy version of Rance with it.
>>
>>38371616
Plus the reach and defensive capability make it win against your standard sword, though it'll take some training to use. Good thing we're using it.
>>
>>38371637
We got to main this form so we can fuck sword-fags sideways. The only melee weapon that can deal with it would be some sort of whip or a pike that's longer but you can guard against that since you can wield the spear faster since it's shorter and better balanced.
>>
>>38371782
Archers will beat the shit out of us, since there's no wielding even a buckler with this shit. Maybe we can learn defensive magic to compensate?
>>
>>38371824
Wind magic it is. Also add some earth magic so we can make a ''crouching tiger and hidden dragon'' pun.

"Well that's that's good. We'll have to drink again some time. Just don't forget what I taught you today, you really shouldn't be chugging booze the way you were earlier."

She laughs. "Right, I'll try not to. Maybe next time Gunther whips something up we'll do this again."

"You'll have to introduce me to him when we get to the Watchtower. I was worried it'd be a complete dry spell after I left."

"I'll do that. But you should probably go get some sleep. It's a long road ahead of us tomorrow."

You nod. It's definitely getting late, so the two of you say goodbye and you head back to Arniel's apothecary. Tomorrow is when you leave, so you need to get some rest.

Drinking. Eating. The table in front of you has enough food and drink for a king's feast, and it's all yours. You gorge yourself on it all, consuming everything within arm's reach. Firsts, seconds, thirds. The endless bounty of food seems like it'll never end.

"Hahahaha! Now this is a feast fit for a hero!" you proclaim, gobbling down a chicken's leg and washing it out with a gobblet of wine.

"This is excessive." Someone says. You can't see who said it, your eyes are too fixed on the feast to pay attention to anything else. "You need to stop."

"Why should I?" you say. "If the king is so kind as to prepare a feast for me, then I'll be damned if I'll turn him down."

"This is still far too much. You're going to hurt-"

"SHUT UP!" you shout, slamming your fat fists on the table. "I'm the damn hero, I can do whatever the fuck I please! And after a long battle in the Forsaken Lands, I want food to eat and booze to drink. Can't I at least have that?!"

The voice is quiet for a moment while you continue to stuff yourself. After a while it speaks again. "Henry, I know you are stressed, but this is not."

"Stressed? Yeah, I'm stressed. And who do you think is to blame for most of it? Now just sit there and shut up or I'll-"

The words catch in your throat, as does the mutton you just ate. You grab at your throat and try to cough it up, but to no avail. You can't breathe. You fall out of your chair, grasping at your throat, unable to speak.

"Henry?! HENRY?!"

------
You bolt upright, finding yourself in Arniel's house, where you've been sleeping since the festival. You massage your eyes, 'Another bad dream' you think to yourself. You climb out of bed and start to gather your things. Today's the day you leave for the Watchtower, you should get ready to go now.
>>
Okay, I'm going to call it a night (morning?) here. Sorry I fell asleep near the end, but thanks for keeping the thread alive while I was out. I'll stick around for a bit if anybody who's still here has any questions.
