You smile to your father, bowing low. “Of course, Father. My apologies for keeping you so late, though I do hope you enjoyed yourself. Please, let me show you to the door.”

As you walk towards the door, you reach out to your Master via the brooches, finding his thoughts sluggish and hazy. {Master, could you corral the Vatis while I show my family to the door? I think now is a good time for that meeting of Vatis I talked about. To warn everyone about the void and the Child who dwells within.}

His response comes only after a long pause. {Aaaabsooolutely, Mikhael. I am on the job. Just let me find my legs again, I can't feel them anymore so I assume they wandered off.}

Gods above, he's stoned out of his mind. Hopefully he's still cognizant enough to remember what you have to say. If not, you suppose you've already told your Master of the dangers. However, if the other Masters are as bad as he is then you're going to be in trouble.

You turn your attention back to your father as you reach the door to the foyer, holding it open so that your family may pass through and then moving to open the front door for your family as well. Before leaving your father pulls you into a hug, patting you firmly on the back. “You've done well, son. Take care of yourself whilst wandering the globe and if you ever need anything, do not hesitate to visit.”

You return your father's hug, you get the feeling he's going to miss you more than he'd be willing to admit. After a short time he separates and strides through the door, your mother almost immediately taking his place. She places a kiss on your cheek, before wagging her finger at you scoldingly. “Make sure you eat well, and even if you are a Vatis I expect some grandkids from you. If you keep sitting on the fence the woman you like may slip through your fingers.”

With that warning she strides out the door. You say goodbye to each of your family members in turn. You hug your older brother tightly and wish him the best of luck, promising to pray that Pani blesses him with a healthy child. You ruffle Chetan's hair and congratulate him on his first kiss, which causes him to turn a shade of purple you didn't think a Samjan could turn. Pratima, Duha, and Halima each hug you in turn, Pratima and Duha pecking you on opposite cheeks, while Halima merely pulls you into one of her rib-crushing bear hugs.

Nadiyya merely nods to you and states that you have performed admirably whilst abroad. She instructs you to keep up the good work, lest you shame the family, then strides out the door with one of her twins cradled in each arm. Semiha pulls you into a gentle hug before claiming that she enjoyed the party and calling your friends the 'strangest bunch of freaks she's ever had the pleasure of getting to know'. Ayda bows to you only slightly and says she enjoyed the party before leaving.

Finally, the last of your family to depart is Azra, your younger sister. She stops in front of you, folding her arms in front of her chest and turning to face you. She waits until the rest of your family are waiting out of earshot before speaking, her voice low. “Look, Mikhael. I know I did a shitty thing turning my back on you. I don't want to keep feuding with you like this. What do you want me to say? I really am sorry, honest.” She sounds sincere, but she refuses to meet your eyes. Some voice in the back of your head tells you that she's just lying to earn your trust. She's probably after your money.

Would you just forgive someone who literally spat on you when you were on your lowest? I am not saying we should seek revenge or continue to fight with her or anything. The first time wasn't an actual apology, so it's the first time she's apologized
And she didn't look us in the eyes.
It's far from senseless to be peeved when your little sister publically snubs you as you are being thrown the fuck out of town.

You poke her lightly in the stomach, causing her to squirm. You keep doing it, too. Just to mess with her. “You know I don't think I trust a person who won't even look at me when they apologize. Seems shifty, if you ask me. Maybe try that again, hmm? Whaddya say?”

She takes a step towards the door, swatting at your hand lightly. “Stooop! You know I hate it when people touch my stomach!” You don't stop, and eventually she gives in. “Fine! Fine I'll do it better this time just stop poking me in front of our family. You're embarrassing me!”

You fold your arms in front of your chest, drawing yourself to your fool height. “Huh, how ironic. You spit on me in front of a crowd of onlookers, my own sister, whom I grew up with. I found that terribly embarrassing. You're right though, how rude of me to poke your stomach.” You make a point of looking her in the eyes. “I'm sorry, Azra. Now then, I believe you had something to say.”

She shrinks away from you slightly, stumbling over her words for a moment before finally meeting your eyes and replying. “I am sorry for spitting on you.” She hesitates a moment. Some voice in he back of your head screams that she's a filthy liar, and for an instant you agree with it. Then she continues. In contrast to the rather passionless tone she'd delivered her previous apology with, this her voice cracks and her eyes water. You get the sense that she really is ashamed of herself, or a very good actor. “I betrayed you, and it was an awful thing to do. I knew you needed the support of your family then more than ever and instead I chose to selfishly advance my own public image. I can't excuse what I've done, but I hope you can forgive me.”

(1/2)
>>
You relax, and pull her into a brief hug, planting a kiss on her forehead, like you used to when she was little. “You're forgiven, Azra. Not to say I'm not still hurt by your actions, but I too hope that we can both move past this.” You release her. “Now, I have important matters to discuss with my Master. Get home safe, and good luck in your search for a husband.”

She smiles, bowing to you briefly before running off to join your parents, siblings, and Vasuda. You think your mother might be crying. Regardless, you wave goodbye to your family and shut the door before finally returning to the ballroom.

As you enter the ballroom you're greeted by a mass of your friends and acquaintances. The Vatis who attended your party. The Masters have gathered everyone into a herd around the refreshments table, and you note that snacks as well as ice cold water are being passed around to help sober everyone up at least slightly. Their attention turns to you as the door shuts with a echoing thud behind you.

Before they leave I want the masters to each give us advice on an element.
I know each of them have done their own studies and research. They could each give us a tad bit of help in an element.
hell our friend is a gm? in metal so he should be able to dish out some knowledge and I am sure they could give us usefull insight towards nature/earth/fire. at least at the level we're at. At least a good meditation we could use. And possibly anything useful towards grandmastery in each element.

You clear your throat, mostly to buy yourself time while you consider what you actually want to say to these people. You could reveal everything to them, and thus run the risk of them using the information you give them to seek out the void, endangering themselves. You might also withhold information and run the risk of them stumbling upon the void by accident or worse, inciting their curiosity and ensuring that they go on to risk their lives and sanity.

In the end, you decide to tell them everything. Hopefully everyone will realize the severity of the threat they would face should they enter the void right now. “I've kept you here because I have an important announcement to make. There exist a realm beyond our own. A distinct dimension, part of our reality and yet separate as well. It is called the void, a realm of endless black inhabited by mind bending horrors.”

Everyone in the room awaits your words with baited breath. Save your Master, of course. He already knows all of this. “I have journeyed this strange realm, I have interracted with its denizens, I have read about it extensively in accounts both modern and ancient. My cloak,” You hoist the garment, which is draped over one of your arms, into the air. “is a portal to the void guarded by an ancient entity of alien intelligence. It allows me to store a seemingly infinite number of items within.”

You drape your cloak over one shoulder, beginning to pace the room as you continue your speech. “What I have come to tell you, indeed what I must tell you, relates to a discovery I made whilst meditating before a massive gateway within the void. Many of them exist, they're a swirling vortex of color and magic. Varistha Sehzade, a name I'm sure you're all familiar with, dubbed them Gates to Surya's Heart.”

(1/4)
>>
“Whilst meditating, a creature approached me. It had the appearance of a man, and indeed may once have been counted among our number, but its time in the void had twisted it into an unrecognizable thing. It proclaimed that it was a herald, proceeding before its lord to warn others to flee, lest their lord's glory reduce them to a shriveled, empty husk. Its lord was dubbed Rikama Malaka, the Lord of the Void, and he was a Child of the Gods. An entity created upon the dawn of creation by the gods themselves, split from the same divine essence which our gods are composed of.”

A murmur of excitement runs through the room, but before people can grow too enthusiastic you continue. “This is not good news, my friends. For it is said that the gods themselves tore down the Rhynian Empire for daring to challenge their might. It was the attempt to resurrect a dead god which destroyed Hiacia. The presence of a Child of the Gods, one of their enforcers, is bad news indeed for us. I caught only the barest glimpse of its great horned head as it stepped through a portal it had ripped in the fabric of reality as casually as I might tear paper. That glimpse alone was enough to boil away my very soul. I seriously considered killing myself in honor of this entity I had only glimpsed, a sacrifice to its greatness.”

Silence reigns, and so you press on. “My friends, I must beg of you. Do not tamper with the void until my Master,” You gesture to Master Karim where he stands at the front of the crowd. “Informs you that it is safe to do so. I have left with him the knowledge necessary to safely determine whether or not the Child is still present.”

(2/4)
>>
You stop your pacing, turning abruptly to face the crowd. “You're probably wondering why it is that I tell you this. So far as I'm aware, none of you save Master Barakat and my own Master have managed to enter the void as I have. I tell you this because the knowledge necessary to reach the void is out there. It exist. If one searches the Grand Library hard enough they will find a way. I tell you this to preempt a tragedy, but this is not all that I wish to tell you.

“In my travels I have encountered many strange beings. Void entities composed solely of disembodied hands. Capricious spirits of fire wishing to consume the souls of the mad. I have learned through my readings that spirits, as we know them, and void entities, are in fact one and the same. Spirits are merely void entities adapted to live within our dimension. Void entities are those spirits which remained in the void. However, in both cases there is a strict hierarchy. At the top of that hierarchy are the gods themselves, from whom all spirits are descended. Below the gods are the Children, and below the Children are the Ancients. Below the Ancients are Elders, and finally from Elders we derive Progenitors.”

“Spirits are those Progenitors which crossed over into our reality, or those entities born from Progenitors. Spirits themselves are divided into a sub-hierarchy based upon age. They call these categories 'Circles', the top circle comprised of the Sarvocca. They are the oldest spirits, or the progenitors themselves, and usually the most powerful. Beneath Sarvocca are Mahana, and beneath Mahana are Thora. Mahana are usually powerful in their own right but Thora are most often subservient to other spirits. The lowest circles of spirits are the Atma and the Kami. Both of whom are comparable to a particularly powerful Vatis in terms of strength. Usually, that is.”

(3/4)
>>
You sigh, taking a moment to catch your breath. Gods above, you've talked a lot already. You're not used to actual speeches. “Finally, I have one more morsel of information I wish to share. Reality is held together by a network of thin golden threads. They pervade everything; me, you, the furniture in this room, the rats in the gutters outside, and even vys itself. Every facet of what you see exist because of a pattern formed by the threads which bind reality and dictate its properties.”

You run over what you've said in your head, ensuring that you haven't forgotten anything. Satisfied, you clear your throat. “The floor is open for questions.”

Ha, and you thought you were done.

You're assaulted by questions, a dozen at a time. Your friends, save your Master and your Companions, crowd around you. They shout to be heard over one another, in the process destroying any semblance of understandable speech. When finally you get them to calm down, you're forced to spend the next several hours expounding on points you've mentioned, fleshing out your explanations, and generally clarifying statements. Arguments break out, passions are incited, and at one point you think things might come to blows. However, in the end, discussion remains peaceful and informative.

Dawn advances upon the world steadily when your friends have finally exhausted themselves of questions, and you can tell that you've given them much to think about. Masters Barakat, Padma, and Tarik already slipped out at some point over the course of the discussion. Rasim is asleep on a pile of pillows, snoring softly. Sushila, Delshad's apprentice, sleeps next to him. You note with some curiosity that their fingers are intertwined.

(4/5)

I mean, I like dialogue. I think I'm pretty good, or at least acceptable, at writing dialogue. I enjoy the opportunity to expound upon the personalities of my characters. I also recognize the necessity of downtime and slow periods to contrast with the fairly stressful experience that is combat-heavy dungeon delving.

But fuck, man. Dialogue takes a lot out of you as a writer. It's not hard per se, it sort of just flows out naturally and requires only a little tweaking, but it's mentally draining.

>>38346001

Nah, this is how I always conceptualized the Vatis meeting. It wasn't like you were going to gather in a shadowy room in hooded cloaks and have this big open debate. It was going to be a speech, an announcement, and a warning.

Totally understandable, anyone who has written before should know what you mean, and you do do a good job with dialogue, in my opinion at least. Profectus isn't gonna learn Marsla ve.
>>
>>38346431
Well there is no point for him to learn it
>>
>>38346431
Prof is a soldier first and a vatis second. He also has to have someone to give him direction constantly or he kinda just sags and lies about. Darzi is pretty much a grandmaster or master, and can help with that. We've been totally ignoring his specialization as a soldier and focused on his magic. It's time to stop wasting his potential.
>>
>>38346456
But the problem is he gets nothing from learning learning it. He only uses shield and swords. He would get more out of learning maneuvers than a martial art he'll never use hell we have book for him in the library on just that
>>
>>38346456
At the least having him spar with her semi regularly would help hone his own skills even if he dosen't choose to learn Marsla Ve.
>>
>>38346456
When the fuck did Darzi become a grandmaster?
>>
>>38346456
Yeah, he'll learn something that supports his style of fighting. Not Marsla Ve which contradicts it.
>>
>>38346515
>>38346456
Unless you mean a grandmaster of Marsla ve
>>
>>38346515
She is our strongest melee combatant so its no strech to think she might be the martial equivalent to a master/grandmaster.
>>
>>38346510
>>38346519
I'd prefer Marsala Ve because it might synergize with the learning five magic

Battle Meditation, Fire Synergy: She frowns, slightly. “Fine. Essentially the method involves shifting through all of the basic forms of Marsala Ve. I found it difficult at first to perform without a spear on hand, as many of the forms are reliant on the spear. I've been trying to turn it into some sort of 'battle trance' but I haven't managed to perfect the method yet. I find that it's particularly useful if you're trying to learn fire magic, likely because the forms of Marsala Ve are so closely tied to the ancient orders of warrior-priest dedicated to Surya. That said, it's just as useful as normal meditation for any of the other elements.”

That said, I'd be fine if with him training up in any style just as long as he's not lying on his ass meditating all day.
>>38346515
I meant a master or grandmaster in Marsala Ve, not in magic.
>>
>>38346533
There is no such thing only Legend however Darzi is just a Veteran
>>38346557
That's Battle Meditation you moron if he tries it in combat it'll kill him.

At least look at the pastebins instead of assuming things.
She is either a veteran or master.
One's skill in a certain style is broken up into tiers, similar to the way magical Elements are divided into separate levels of expertise. These tiers are as follows:
-Legend (No Further Advancement)
-Master (DC 35 for Insight)
-Veteran (DC 30 for Insight)
-Practitioner (DC 25 for Insight)
-Novice (DC 20 for Insight)
-Trainee (DC 15 for Insight)
In order to advance from one level to the next you must either use a style frequently over a fairly long period of time, train on your own, or train with someone more knowledgeable in that specific style. You receive bonuses to Insight rolls based on your tutor's skill, with training on your own granting no bonus.

Oi. I meant using Battle Meditation in synergy with meditation to get over that "block" or plateau he's been going on about with his advancement in fire. The bint who taught us that even told us not to use it in real fights. Why would I want Prof, one of the least magically included mates to do so?
>>
>>38346557
Prof can probably GM Fire, don't underestimate his magical potential, they modified him specifically to have much more magical potential than he should, especially Fire

>>38346577
How do you know? Darzi is most likely a Master in Marsla Ve.

Speaking of which Soma should put our companions proficiencies in martial combat in the companions pastebin.
>>
>>38346591
He literally just said he got over his block not even 3-4 threads ago.

>>38346591
Let Prof advance as he pleases, as long as he is getting better the rest is his business.
>>

No.

According to what he said,

"Profectus shrugs. “I don't know, for the longest time I felt like I'd hit this wall. Like I wasn't making any progress. I did a little reading though and I feel like I've pretty much pushed past that plateau. We'll see if I make any sort of significant progress.”

I believe he's starting to hit his limit as a Vatis. Furthermore, he can't spend all day meditating. Giving him more avenues to advance can only be a good thing.
>>
>>38346683
That was before he met the old samjan who enscribed runes onto him.

Though bleary eyed and exhausted, you draw yourself up and shake free the insidious tendrils of sleep which coil around your thoughts, constricting them as snake does its prey. You turn your attention to Hadia, her research being the most groundbreaking. Were she able to reinvent a metamagic that allowed the use of ambient vys instead of one's reserves, it would revolutionize the roles of Vatis within the Shahdom.

“So, alright. Hadia. Casting using ambient vys. You already managed that much, right? The problem is you can't filter vys and you can't really control the spells you cast. Have you considered that maybe you ought to look into the properties of the Weapon Channeling meta? Perhaps if you could construct it such that the ambient vys itself was your 'weapon' you could channel it even though it isn't technically a part of your vys pool.”

She opens her mouth to respond, but quickly closes it again, rubbing her chin contemplatively. She speaks only after a long, contemplative pause. “I do not believe that will be enough, but it is a good starting point. I will work on that, Mikhael. I'll tell Master Karim should I have any breakthroughs.”

The two of you bow to one another, and she makes for the door. You turn your attention to Ismail next, since your advice for him is simple. “Whilst I'm abroad, I recommend you seek out my friend Skull Kid, or Thaddeus as he prefers to be called these days. He is a genius, a man straight from the age of Old Rhynia. Speak with him, and he will be able to help you with your plans to revolutionize industry.”

Ismail grins. “Fantastic, Mik. I spoke with him during the party. Nice guy, weird face. Perhaps I should say, weird lack-of-face. Anyway, I'll seek him out tomorrow. Not like, later today tomorrow but tomorrow tomorrow.” With that, he pulls you into a brief, comradely hug before making for the door.

Than give the man another book. How about the one on Rhynian martial arts or a book on effects. You have to realize what you're suggesting will slow his progress unless he reaches a certain level. Hell he could just do group meditation instead and make it a competitive fire slinging for max bonuses.

Mohan is your next companion to advice. He seems barely able to keep his eyes open, but you snap your fingers to get his attention and he stirs awake. “Mohan, I have good news. I know for a fact that Earth magic can erode the soul of a man or beast. I think, in targeting the 'mind', you are missing your true target. The soul is a tightly wound ball of... well, it's not quite vys. It's similar to vys, it's the source from which vys originates. Meditate deeply with a clear mind until the threads of reality become visible. The glowing orbs which fill your field of view are the souls of the living. It is those glowing orbs that you wish to erode, not the mind.”

He nods his head slowly, taking that all in. “Hardly sounds ethical, but if what you say is true I'll need to attempt it at my earliest opportunity. Hopefully I can get off of construction duty early and get home to experiment.” With that, he clasp your forearm tightly. You return the gesture briefly, and then the two of you part ways. Mohan makes for the door.

Neither Rajani or Delshad are struggling with anything in particular. Well, that's not true. You just already gave Rajani advice. You pat Delshad companionably on the shoulder and wish him the best of luck in life and all of his endeavors. He, in turn, goes to fetch his apprentice from the mound of pillows she's collapsed in.

Much to your surprise Rajani pulls you into a brief hug, placing a chaste peck on your jaw before hurrying towards the door without a word. Gods above, that woman is strange. It's terribly rude to lead a man on, if you didn't know she fancied women you might start getting ideas that she had a crush on you. That's impossible, right? Yeah.

Finally you turn your attention to Derya, who's currently clutching his head and moaning in pain, mumbling curses under his breath. Most of them directed at wine, or himself, or opium. You make your way over to his side, taking a seat next to him and patting him on the pack. He winces.

“Everything aches.” He complains. “Why did I drink so much? Why have the Gods cursed me with this foul punishment? Have I not honored them?”

You sigh heavily. “The Gods punish those who overindulge. You should have paced yourself, Derya!”

He interrupts, waving a hand in your general direction. “Not so loud, please. No need to shout.”

You'd been talking fairly quietly, but you lower your voice further still. “Listen, Derya. You said you were having some trouble figuring out invisibility. I'm going to assume that you're trying to twist light in such a way that it lands on the space behind an object rather than on the object itself, right?”

He nods his head, and you continue. “Good, that's how I conceptualize invisibility as well. What might be the case is that you're simply not yet able to manipulate Fire magic on such a small scale. I would recommend first reaching Mastery of Fire Magic, and then coming back and trying to turn something invisible. I'd bet you find it a whole lot easier.”

He nods his head, pushing himself unsteadily to his feet. As he stumbles towards the door you call after him. “Are you going to be able to get home alright? I could have my carriage drive you there.”

His response is a incoherent grunt, and then he slips out of the ballroom. You collapse into the pile of pillows surrounding you, finally letting yourself relax. Your head aches, but only mildly. Hopefully your hangover won't get worse as the day progresses.

Your master comes to sit next to you after a time, sighing as he lowers himself to a seat on a cushion next to you. After a comfortable silence he reaches over and pats you on the shoulder in a way you can only describe as fatherly. “You've done well, Mikhael. I raised you well.”

Mik believed she was a lesbian so he never considered a potential partner.

I'm the anon who came up with it, and I still think making the plasma itself invisible should make the meditation even better.
Though I wonder if letting it slowly burn off an arm or something wouldn't be good, since many methods of meditating on fire involve letting heat harm one's body, probably to become intimitely familiar with it.
Also, isn't lightning the same as plasma? If no, we could also have the cocoon have lightning run over it constantly.
>>
>>38347344
Lightning causes plasma, it superheats the air and makes it but it isn't plasma. I think science is hard

>>38347373

>>38347344
Now that I think about it, doing this while underwater would probably make it even harder. If that's possible at all, maybe doing it with our whole body underwater except the head would be better, and more possible. Or just have Water vatis douse us with water while we're meditating?
