Let's assume that humans are soul + body.

The soul is the "core" of the human, while the body produces the magical energy required for the soul to continue to exist in this world. The soul strengthening causes the body to live longer, but the body weill eventually die and the soul will be lost in this instance.


For an Elemental Spirit, they're just a free-floating Soul.

This Soul acts as the core around which a great amount of magical energy is gathered, and this excess in turn allows the Soul to continue to exist. A certain amount of magical energy is spent in order to keep the Soul tethered to this plane of existence, and more still is used to form a vessel with which they interact with their surroundings, magic that they cast, etc.

Since they have no true "body" that they're tethered to, one would need to force them to expend magical energy beyond the limit at which a Soul can exist in order to kill them. Basically, their HP and MP bars are one, and everything they do whittles a little bit away from it.
