You are Reinhold Eschenwald, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

One of many issues that you're forced to deal with at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

Luciana.

You've finally found her.

And nothing is going to keep you from taking her back.

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a ferocious TIGER!
>Strong and fearless, tigers are the only predators known to feed on lesser dragons.
>The Princess considers you to be her dear friend and fierce protector!
>But while tigers truly are impressive, they still fall short of being considered as people.

"Monique!" you shout. "He's getting away, I need a lift!"

Alerted by your call, Monique creates a thick wall of ice between himself and the man who he was in the middle of fighting, then kicks it hard enough to sandwich his opponent in between it and the nearest wall of the hallway itself.

"Snowflake Step!"

Leaping as high as he can, floating platforms of ice in the shape of snowflakes materialize under his feet. True to the spell's name, these snowflakes serve to allow Monique to step along the air itself, enabling him to safely run across the entire scene of the battle unscathed.

Monique lands on the floor just in front of you, and you pull him with you into the room from which Leopold fled outside.

"So this is..." Monique grits his teeth. "Reinhold, hang onto my shoulder and I'll fly both of us out there."

Nodding in agreement, you do just as Monique asks. Making sure you get a firm grip, you wrap your arm around his shoulders and hold on tight...

...and Inaba leaps into your free arm shortly before the two of start running towards the makeshift opening in the wall.

"Shining lights of the night sky, free me of my shackles so that I may soar to your boundless heights!"

Crimson Script carves itself into the very air around you as you and Monique race towards the wall and leap outside...

"Starlight Wing!"

Morning fog may hamper Monique. It's far too early to use a boost, and we're not sure how ready Leo's defenses are so let's go for a speed-check on him when we land/need to tackle him out of the sky.

Found something amusing. Ran a search on the archives for 'Steel Knight' text by archelon, and about half of them are in reference to the Fragment Blade that Monique gave to Emilio, which was once used by the Steel Knight.

Fun with shitty diagrams!

Leopold's ground-sensing works as such:

Anything within a mile's radius that's touching the ground, he can sense. This works best when on a flat surface, he can tell where every moving thing is without any effort on his part.

But in a stone building such as the one they were in, his perception is thrown off by a lot. Anything along a single direct plane connected to the floor he's standing on, he can feel just fine. But this is limited to the outer wall of the room he was in and the floor of the third story/ceiling of the second.

His perception of everything else is extremely dulled, thanks to there being no direct connection between himself and the surface that they're standing on. All the vibrations are sent along the various interior walls of the building itself, and all he's able to detect from that is "something is here."

And that's how you were able to get the drop on him.

With one arm, you cling to Monique for dear life. For a few seconds, it feels as if you're going to lose your grip and fall to your death, but before that can happen you find yourself being held in place by something very cold.

"Thanks, Setsuranka," you say as you get yourself situated.
"She says that you're welcome," Monique replies.

Though you and Monique took flight, you soon find that Leopold didn't. Eschewing the use of anything resembling a flight spell, instead he causes massive columns of stone to rise from the ground and act as makeshift platforms on which he can descend safely.

In short, he made himself his own personal stone staircase.

Monique's there too, I guess. That's what makes it the true route (male).
>>

>>38280189

>>
>>38280189

>>
>>38280192
Besides casting Morning Fog, what is our plan exactly?

We can't really go all out on Leopold while he's carrying Luciana. The only thing I can think of is counting on Inaba to catch Leopold by surprise and grabbing Luciana away from him.
>>
>>38280277
Stab the cunt.
>>
>>38280277
First we boost.
Then, we boost again just to be safe.
Next, we boost some more because we can.
Then we hit Leo until he's paste.
>>
>>38280141

But the effort needed to pull off such a feat means that all of Leopold's concentration is focused on easing his descent... and that means that he has no idea that you're in pursuit.

"You can sense heat with your sword, right?" you ask Monique in a hushed tone.
"Eh?" Monique seems surprised. "...yes..."
"Well mine can detect magical energy... or something," you glance at your side, "So rely on that for now, okay? "I'm gonna throw up a smokescreen, and he shouldn't know where we're coming from as long as we're not touching the ground."

At least that's how you think it works.

After wasting a few seconds mumbling to himself (maybe he's talking to Setsuranka?) Monique speaks up.

"Tremor sense since he's an Earth-typed Contractor... in that case, I'll do you one better."
"Eh?" you turn to him.
"Hurry up and cast the spell and then I'll do my part."

You make sure that Inaba is snugly tucked in under your arm so that she doesn't fall, then use that same arm to reach into your jacket and bring out one of the scrolls that you've been holding on to for the past month and a half. Holding onto one end in your mouth, you pull your arm out, causing the long roll of paper to unfurl.

Remembering what Sylvie told you when you asked how exactly to use this thing, you focus on the area around where Leopold is descending down his pillar-stairs...

"Morning Fog."

You toss the burning scroll aside before its flames can reach your body... and then your plan takes effect. Starting in the area immediately around Leopold, who's just managed to reach the ground, a cloud of water vapor explodes into the air and renders the entire area in what may as well be whiteout conditions.

"Th'fuck!?" Leopold screams as his entire field of vision is cut off. "Son of a bitch!"

You resist the urge to taunt him, and instead look back down at your sword.

"Keep me posted on where they are," you say to it. "Every few seconds, tell me where they are."

<below>

"Thanks."

Having put your plan in action, Monique decides to finally put forth his addition... though you can't see anything right now, the fact that the temperature most definitely show down below freezing definitely says otherwise.

"Monique!" Leopold shouts. "I know this is you, you miserable little shit! Once I'm on the ground, I'mma put you down for g-"

What this guy said
>>
>>38281625
The issue is that he knows someone is coming on account of us having changed the terrain. If Inaba goes in solo, he's still on guard for an attack to come.

If everyone he expects to be coming shows themselves, he assumes that is the attack he was expecting, and Inaba gets to do her sneak attack as planned.

We don't need to do anything that actually involves putting Luciana at risk, we just have to make him think we blew our chance to take him by surprise so he lets that portion of his guard down.

You crouch down and gently place Inaba on the ground.

"I need you to sneak in and get Luciana, okay?" you whisper to her.

Fortunately, she's close enough to you for you to be able to see her nod in affirmative before scampering away.

<left>

<forward>

Following your sword's directions, you slowly begin to creep forward while trying your best not to give away your position through sound. Leopold, on the other hand, is making no such attempts, screaming obscenities while loudly smashing the ice on the ground somehow. From the way that his cursing is starting to trail off, you can more or less make out the general direction in which he's trying to flee even without your sword's instruction.

Also, you realize that maybe you don't need to be quite as quiet as you initially thought.

"Reinhold," you hear Monique whisper. "He knows I'm here, so I'll act as the rabbit's distraction. Once she has the Princess freed, that's when you come in."
"Got it," you reply.

Once he has Luciana free, he'll lose the only thing keeping you from bashing his face in until it's nothing more than ground meat. Moving steadily in the direction that your sword indicates, you can tell from the sound that you're drawing close...

"Got you!" Leopold shouts.

You feel a gust of wind rush past you and then the loud crashing of stone colliding with ice. Rubble and broken ice falls all around you as the two men shout...

"Wha!?" Leopold shouts. "FUCK!"

You pull back, leaping to the side seconds before the ground beneath you erupts into a mass of spikes. Even through this fog, you're close enough to be able to tell that those things would have delivered until you a most painful death.

"Fuck'n..." Leopold snarls. "Playin' me like this..."

In the dissipating fog, you can see the figure of a large man clutching his forearm.

Given that it's being made in Ren'Py, you could probably just make your own PGQ VN if arch releases the assets. (Portraits, backgrounds, music, etc.)

Before the fog clears up, you reach into your pocket and pull out your backup scroll, creeping away from Leopold as you unfurl it.

"Morning Fog."

And once again, you are surrounded by a sea of white.

And then nearly bite your tongue while leaping away from -something- that launched itself right towards where you were standing when you cast that spell. You take a few deep breaths to cool your nerves while Leopold curses incoherently... just from that you know exactly where he is, but the fog's such that you're completely unable to locate your allies or tell whether or not they're hurt.

If Leo's getting frozen by Monique then we'd have no problem cracking it with the weight of the metal. If he has stone bodied himself then we'll rip him a new one.
>>
>>38283127
Move aside then charge the spot he was at, ready to grab and stab but not leading with the blade.

Maybe tell the sword "avoid friends" or somesuch before we move.
>>
>>38283127
Rapid hit and run attacks with Dead Line Fault. Should pierce through any blocking he does. Don't stop moving and change up the directions we come from.
>>
>>38283127
We need to stone body up since he can pretty much kill us instantly with those earth spike.

I say just Stone Body + Tailwind
>>
>>38283127
He's going to be jumpy, given he was able to attack within the incantation for Morning Fog, which is shortened by virtue of being a scroll. He'll definitely hit us if we try and cast an actual, full-length-incantation spell.

Throw a disposable object into the ice slightly off to the side to get him to attack in that direction, then use the distraction to close in and shank him again.
>>
>>38283178
>We need to stone body up since he can pretty much kill us instantly with those earth spike.
The problem with that is that while it would make us harder to kill with a single hit, it would also make us a whole lot easier to hit. And considering that Leopold is capable of simple burrying us alive, that is not necessarily a good trade off.

You hear Leopold swearing and Monique calling out attack spells and lots and LOTS of shattering rocks and ice... you're not sure where Monique is, but Leopold's making no attempt to hide his own location.

"Lead me right to him," you say to your sword before chanting the incantation for Stone Body.

And then you run.

Though your steps are slowed by your increased weight, a quick casting of Tailwind serves to increase your pace by a great deal...

"SHIT!" Leopold screams just before you're able to slam into him. The ground beneath the two of you erupts through its icy covering, sending a column of stone racing into the air seconds before a wall of ice shoots right into it.

Coming to a sliding halt, you turn around and ponder your next move...

...and curse the fact that it's so difficult to coordinate attacks when you have no idea what your allies are even doing.

"I have Luciana!" you hear Inaba shout. "She okay!"

You breathe a relieved sigh... though the fact that Inaba was the one to say it most likely means that Luciana's still gagged. But at least the both of them seem to be staying out of the way...

...though that still leaves the issue of this giant pillar that's in front of you. Though this second casting of Morning Fog has yet to dissipate, the rocky outcropping is large enough for you to be able to see it even in these conditions.

And only one thing comes to mind.

"My path is undeterred, forever moving forward..." you chant., rattling off the incantation for this spell as quickly as you can while drawing back your sword. Once you're finished, you let loose onto the base of the stony platform with all your might. "DEAD LINE FAULT!"

The small chipping that you made with your sword quickly spiders along until the entire thing's broken through.

...but it's not falling.

INstead, it seems to be... pulled into the air. And though you're not quite sure, it kind of looks like it's breaking apart as it goes.

And you can hear a whistling sound.

Oh shit.

>cast holy shine
>use a shade guard scroll
>>
>>38283455
Because we kept Fog up, which eliminates most of the reasonable cues, which makes the combat system kind of arbitrary. He doesn't know where we are, so there's not much "fighting" to do. Just sniping at him and buying time for Inaba/Luciana to get out of range for immediate retaliation and free from her restraints.

More likely than not it'll kick in once we've worn him down a bit and the scenario gets more conventional.

"Quick!" you grunt while reaching into your jacket for another of the scrolls that you'd almost forgotten you even had. "Where's the nearest person!?"

<left>

Heeding your sword's instructions, you run in that direction as fast as you can while pulling the scroll open.

"Shade Guard!" you shout.

Though it isn't much thanks to the low light conditions and fog, you still have enough of a shadow to pull it over your head and extend it for a short distance further. Fearful of losing your balance, you come to a halt once you hear the first of what sounds like droplets of rain hitting an umbrella.

But it's not rain that's falling, but instead small, sharp rock projectiles that are falling from the skies, presumably the remains of the pillar that you split a few seconds prior.

Standing perfectly still while the rocks fall, you continue to extend the shield of darkness over your head and as far as it'll stretch around you. While you're doing this, you feel a pair of small arms wrap around your chest.

"Thanks."

Through the dissipating fog, you look down and see Inaba's white hair and floppy ears.

"Where's Luciana!?" you shout.
"There," she replies, pointing just at the edge of the range of your shield at the still-gagged and bound Princess. "Couldn't see to take things off, but she not hurt."
"Thank God," you say, breathing a sigh of relief.

Immediately after the last of the rocks hit the ground, you hear something much heavier slam down. And though you're unable to make out any real details, you're pretty sure that it's Leopold, returned to land.

Fragment Blader and give her an implement, or else she's going to have to gnaw or rip through, which is way less efficient. Gag first, both for casting and in case she knows something that needs to be told urgently.

Gradually, visibility returns to the area and you're able to get a good look at the area once again. To your right, Leopold's standing in place staring at something that's most definitely not where you're standing. You follow his line of sight, finding a large shell of give that promptly melts away, revealing Monique. He seems to be bleeding from the head, but he's still standing and that's probably the best that you can hope for at this juncture.

While the two men stare each other down, you glance at the two ladies who are in front of you. Despite standing barefoot on the sheet of ice that's covering the ground, Inaba seems otherwise unhurt, and Luciana...

...her clothes are torn and her mouth is gagged and seeing her like this up close fills you with incomparable rage.

"Inaba," you say, pulling a dagger from your boot, "get that gag off of Luciana."
"I do that," Inaba replies.

Without thinking, your legs propel you forward. Filled with rage, you grip your sword with both hands and ready yourself to plunge it through that man's heart. But he isn't even looking at you.

Only Monique.

He took Luciana from you. In front of you. He placed everyone in this entire stupid world who you love in danger at once, and now that you're standing right here, he doesn't even pay you any mind.

That is soon to change.

"LEOPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLD!!!!" you scream at the top of your lungs as you race towards the former Knight of the Tiger's Claw. Taking your lead, Monique dashes towards his former comrade at the same time.

Leopold darts his eyes at you. And then Monique. Raising his hands in front of his face, he quickly clenches them into fists. And then the ground erupts.

At either side, a long serpentine tendril of stone shoots from the ground. ONe races towards you, and the other flies at Monique... still far enough to dodge, you leap to the side.

It traces your movements.

That looks like a crash, so I'm going with strike. And Reinhold, you dumbass, why shout out his name when you could have tried to get in a sneak attack while his attention was on Monique.
>>
>>38284221
I think he was genuinely confusing it with a crush. It's the same problem some people had with the earth controller in FDQ. If your enemy is controlling the earth everything looks a little bit like it might be a crash.
>>
>>38284239
"Telegraphed" means there was a huge wind-up to the attack, this is standard video-game style fight terminology. This attack was pitched at us with a brief gesture, and everything needs at least that much in this system which relies on describing the initial motions so we can pick our response.

Meanwhile, it is a tracking attack, meaning it depends on a precise hit: strike behavior. Crashes are broad, sweeping area-of-effect or large, unwieldy projectile type attacks that can't be steered (the rules give examples like "flinging a tree"), but will blast through any guard you put up if you don't evade.
>>
>>38284250
Because stop ignoring me senpai.
>>
You're not going to be able to evade this one, and you've no intention on wasting effort trying to break through it with your own attack. Staring the earthen tendril down, you take a deep breath and begin chanting.

"I shed this frail husk," you growl, "biding my time so that I may be reborn within a carapace of steel!"

Just before the oncoming projectile plows into you, you invoke the spell.

"METAL BODY!"

The tendril hits you head on, and the force of its momentum actually knocks the breath from your lungs. But even so, you are unharmed. Digging your heavy heels into the icy sheet that's covering the ground, you stomp forward while what remains of the tendril shatters harmlessly against your chest.

"Junpaku na Shinkirou!"

Repeatedly changing direction, Monique leaves countless ice afterimages in his wake. Once enough of them are made, Monique leaps back into what's become a veritable forest of his copies...

...this seems to prove that Leopold's attack was controlled directly by him and wasn't an automatic spell, as they crash harmlessly into several ice clones in an attempt to follow his movements. And with every change in direction, more of those same copies are made... it's clear from the look on his face that Leopold is getting frustrated from having to put up with this.

So frustrated that he barely even sees you coming. Once you're within swording range, you stab right for his heart. He dodges it just barely, however...

...but then you reach out with your free hand, curl your fingers, and drive it right into his torso.

"Ghaa!"

Leopold reels back in pain, clutching where you just struck him. Not one to leave yourself open, you also leap away from your opponent and reform the talons that were growing around your fingers back into their original bracelet form.

Can we do this with it? Longer of course.
>>
>>38284522
In that case, say Reinhold became a metal contractor and could maintain his metal form for an extended period. Could Niklaus prep us with crystals?
>>
>>38284554
No, we would still be us (just metal) and therefore our mana intensity is way too high for crystals to survive on our body.
>>
>>38284512
Could he hypothetically switch what type of sword it is, say make it more rapier like for thrusts or like a falchion for swings.
>>
>>38284554
Crystals get blown out by trying to infest things with human-level magical energy, so I feel like they'd just get blown up even if we tried to integrate them in metalform.
>>
>>38284562
The mass wouldn't change, so the options are limited. Making it a curved blade is doable though I'm sure.
>>
>>38284512
I know we can make the edge serrated.. can we make it move back and forth rapidly so it effectively acts like a chainsword?
>>
Shaking the blood from your hand, you grip your sword and stare Leopold down with eyes every bit as filled with hate as his own.

"Fuck'n Eschenwalds..." Leopold growls. "I should've killed that old bat when I had the chance, just to spite you."

You don't respond.

"But maybe she'll drop dead from grief anyways when she finds out that I killed her beloved grandson!"

Leopold stomps onto the ground as hard as he can, cracking through the icy shell and hitting the firm ground underneath. Suddenly, you feel the ground beneath your own feet rumble.

Before you know it, everything within a five-yard radius of where you're standing shoots into the air at such a velocity that you find yourself having a hard time standing.

>[1/?]
>>
>>38284543
That seems like it would be an enourmous hindrance compared to just holding a sword. You would be sacrificing half an arm worth of reach and the articulation of one joint for what exactly?
>>

>>
>>38284589
Chainsaws are actually pretty terrible "blades".

We can't have unrealistic weapons in our animu-ladden quest.

The constant movement would drain Reinhold's reserves in an instant.
>>
>>38284599
Well first, fusing with the blade would be roughly the same length as holding it normally. And I think we could bend the blade almost organically if we did so, similar to the sword shaping antics we do already but better. I'm sure there's a few uses for that.
>>
>>38284609
I think at this point he is just trying to stack reasons to kill him in the hope that any end we could actually bestow upon him feels unsatisfactory.

>>

Considering that this would require the expenditure of magical energy for every movement I still don't see the actual benefit. Especially since we can still do the sword bending stuff if we just hold the blade normaly. In fact we would be giving up some of these capabilities because we are busy using them for stuff that we would have gotten for free if we had been holding our sword normaly.

Too heavy to leap out of the way in time, you instead crouch down as low as you can until the ground beneath you comes to a stop.

"Reinhold!" Monique shouts in horror as you ride up so high that he can no longer see you.
"Judging from the fact that he hasn't come back down yet, I beet that piece of shit can't even fly..." Leopold snickers. "So doing this gives me a little breather to deal with you."

Punching at the air, Leopold sends a wave of earth flying at Monique, who blocks it all off with an ice wall formed with a simple swing of his sword. Once the attack seems to have stopped, Monique runs around it in order to counterattack the traitorous Knight, and his eyes widen with horror when he hears just what Leopold is chanting.

"I call upon thee, oh well of power that exists within me," Leopold says as he points upwards at the platform that you're trapped on with both index fingers. "Surge through these frail hands of mine and outward with all of your force..."

You can hear him chanting something down there, but you're not at all familiar with the incantation. But even so, you're almost one hundred percent sure that this isn't going to end well if you let him get whatever spell that is off. You peer off the edge of the platform that you're trapped on... about the size of a house, it's too dangerous for you to leap down on your own.

THUD

you feel something hit the side of the platform. A wall of ice, sloping down to the ground, courtesy of Monique. Nodding in silent thanks, you race towards its edge while chanting a spell of your own...

Down on the ground, Leopold is casually pushing away Monique's ice attacks while Script continues to gradually form around him. THen he looks up, and you're DAMNED sure that you see him grinning at you seconds before throwing another volley of dirt at Monique.

Your ally covers himself with a dome of ice, but that's all Leopold needs to continue casting unabated.

"...to this cause, I pour my entire soul," Leopold chants.

Shit, he's surely aiming whatever the hell spell this is at you. And from the ever-widening smile he has on his face while chanting, you're pretty sure that he's almost done.

Good thing you're almost done with your own. Holding your sword off to your side, you race to the edge of the platform and slide down the wall that Monique made for you while glaring at Leopold all the while.

"...the final glimmer of light before TWILIGHT'S WAKE!"

You swing your sword in Leopold's direction as hard as you can, sending an arc of light that crashes into the ice ground.

But he leaps aside, completely unharmed.

And the Script from his spell is still in the air!

>>
>>38284867
>[3/3]

Your lower lip curls under your front teeth, forming the first syllable of a certain word...

"Ghaa!!" Leopold shouts in horror as a small glacier's worth of ice shoots up from beneath him. Though he manages to convert his body into stone before he ends up impaled or frostbitten, he's still held in place.

And the shock of that sudden attack from the still-trapped Monique served to shake his concentration enough for him to drop whatever death spell he was trying to cast on you. Not one to waste this perfect opportunity, you divert your momentum from having slid halfway down the ice wall into a long leap right for the hapless Leopold.

"My path is undeterred, forever moving forward," you chant. "No matter how massive it may be..."

Leopold stares in horror at the sight of an opponent composed of metal flying towards him. Frantically, he tries to free himself from the thick ice that holds him in place.

"Any obstacle that may stand before me," you draw your sword back "...is naught but glass in the face of my unyielding might!"

In perfect range, you throw all of your magically-enhanced weight into the downward swing.

"DEAD LINE FAULT!!"

You aim for Leopold's face, but he manages to free an arm just bare in time to intercept your sword. Instead of bisecting his head, your blade sinks lower

and lower

and lops his forearm right off.

Not about to leave yourself open for reprisal, you quickly leap away while watching the impact fractures from your swing travel up the remainder of Leopold's arm. any further spread is blocked thanks to his return to his flesh-and-blood self, but the damage is done.

Like the shoddy mud-brick siding on the houses of what passed for "luxury homes" in Cateno, Leopold Massenet's left arm crumbles to the ground.
