> Previously, on Mage: the Awakening Quest!

After getting geared up, you met up with Diana, Jemma, and Sarah. Together with Liz, you five began your infiltration into the Tower in an attempt to locate Tsukuyomi's base of operations, where you suspect her Profane Urim is located. Sarah and Jemma ran into resistance first, it being the brainwashed Hunters and Heimdall. You, Liz, and Diana soon arrived from the Shadow World side, and you quickly disabled the Hunters and Smokey Bandit, one of the Mages that Liz had supposedly killed.

Now Heimdall has returned from a sudden fall down the Tower and looks to be the next one to stop the group's pursuit for the truth.

> And now, back to the action!

"Get down," Jemma yells as you feel a growing heat source on your back. You and Liz drop to the floor, keeping an eye on the quickly approaching swarm of hornets. A cloud of flame eminates from Jemma and into the hallway, barely avoiding her fireball. The cloud engulfs the swarm of hornets and strikes the mountain of muscle, though it just seems to buffer off him like water breaking against a dam.

"The most vulgar, destructive form of magic versus the most powerful restorative magic known to Mages," Heimdall says, cracking his neck and knuckles in his hands. "What is the saying, an unstoppable force meeting an immovabile object?"

"Yeah, well lets see how you handle getting a Sun shoved up your ass," Jemma replies, a wicked grin on her face. "Go, I got this."

For those new/wondering about the quest, ways to contact me and ask me stuff outside of threads, and the archives, check the pertinent links.

Resource document is up to date. Michael is currently sitting on 3 exp. He has 13 Mana remaining, and the spirits he has in his brass knuckles are healthy, though the Lightning spirit is mostly drained after using most of it's juice in the fight against Smokey Bandit.

Liz healed the damage inflicted upon him in the fight in the few moments since it (4 bashing damage total).

Not comfortable with leaving her against this guy alone. We should stick in groups of at least 2, so either leave Liz with her and join up with Sarah or stick around until Sarah rejoins us.

Mind magic is most effective when used on those separated from their groups.

Overhead the sprinklers turn on, after the burst of flames broke their heat sensors, the ringing of a fire alarm now going off all around you. "Where's Sarah," you yell over the screeching sirens.

"Dealing with another Mage," Jemma yells back as she pulls out her handgun, slipping in another magazine of bullets. "Couple floors up, go help her!"

"Go, I'll stay behind to help Jemma out," Liz says, quickly casting a pair of spells on you to speed up your escape. You nod and hurry back into the stairwell as time slows down, and within moments you climb two flights of stairs and escape out into...

You aren't entirely sure what. Parts of what looks like office rooms are smushed together, walls ending abruptly, showing exposed wires and piping, and you swear there's a pretty cold draft blowing throughout the floor.

"Sarah?" Your voice echoes out, and moments later she appears next to you in a swirl, materializing out of nowhere.

"Stay close, the floor isn't real," she says, and within moments teleports you back with her into what looks like a small hideout she's made amongst the office supplies, the room appearing much bigger than you think it should be.

"What's going on?"

"Space Mage battle," she replies, slowly creeping about the room, peeking out from behind places and trying to discern some unseen thing. "Tiny's scouting for the enemy Mage, so I'm just waiting."

"You ok otherwise," you ask, seeing her unusually focused.

"I..." At that, she pauses, eyes looking up into her forehead for an answer. "I think the swap fixed something."

"Do you mind if I..." She shakes her head in agreement, and you turn on your Spirit Sight, analyzing the damage to her soul. And while it still looks heavily damaged, one particularly twisted segment you remember seeing looks to be healed... At least partially so. Concerned that the swap left something behind in your soul, you inspect yourself, only to see it looking as healthy as it usually does.

"It might've undone some of the damage," you tell her. "Though it's still greatly injured."

"Hmm... I think-" She goes to talk, before stopping, raising a finger to her mouth, pressing it to her lips. Her hands glow black for a moment, and a loud rumbling echoes out around you, as the office space shrinks down, the draft blowing through the area disappearing, and she begins to cast more spells, and within moments you and her are crouching in a cubicle. You poke your head up and see that you both are in the middle of a series of cubicles, and she quickly stands up and walks over to another one.

"I win," she grins out, dragging an unconscious body out from behind a cubicle wall, a tarantula crawling up her arm and resting on her shoulder.

"Have you seen Diana," you ask her. At that, she shakes her head. "Great... Now I gotta find her."

At that, your footing gives way.

As you begin to sink into the floor you leap as hard as you can, and barely are able to clear the edge of the newfound pit that formed right where you were standing. You glance back and see the floor continue to give way, so you continue moving, grabbing Sarah as you run and pull her with.

"Running time!" You and her begin dashing down the office hall as the floor continues to break apart, and with a mighty thud you both barrel into the staircase and tumble down the flight of stairs to the floor below.

"Ow, my ass..." Sarah rubs her behind as she slowly gets up, looking around her. "Uhh... Raguel?"

You slowly get up to see Diana throwing various balls at someone, who is deflecting the orbs into the ceiling above with a glowing quarterstaff, where they explode and turn the ceiling and floor above into clouds of dust, disintegrating office supplies falling down onto them both.

"What the hell is this," escapes from your mouth as the person with the quarterstaff shoots a bolt of energy out of it. Diana raises up her arm, a bracelet on it flashing to life as the energy bolt strikes an invisible force field.

"... Matter Mage battle?" Sarah shrugs, looking around at the half-disintegrated cubicle walls and literal piles of dust and sand forming on the floor around you as the pair continue their ranged battle.

Also, upon reviewing the last thread I realize I made a potentially huge mistake. The four spirits you selected for use were a Kinetic energy spirit, an Ailment-curing one, a Resolve-boosting one, and the machine gun spirit. However, people elected to use a Lightning spirit to deal with Bandit, and in my haste to continue running the thread let it go through, thinking you chose it instead of the Kinetic energy one.

Now, as I see it, there's two ways I can go about correcting it:

> Swapping the Kinetic spirit for the Lightning one so last Quest remains vailid
> Having the Kinetic spirit be the one you used to defeat Bandit, and re-writing how you dealt with her.

Let me know what you guys want to do.

I say we use a spirit shot. A matter mage won't know what the fuck to make of it, especially since we seem to be the only person to have figured out how to weaponize spirit.

The Urim is what we're here for. There's a Space mage in the building, so we can't dilly dally and let them escape with it.

> Swapping the Kinetic spirit for the Lightning one so last Quest remains vailid

Either way, we'd have a spirit with one big attack left in it.

Also, what was that business with Celerity spirits? Do they exist? Vampiric Celerity just gives you some speed bonuses and a dash movement, not extra actions.

IIRC, that was Spirit Shot. But it only deals Bashing to non-spirits. I think we're basically making a bit of spirit matter and stabbing directly at a soul. Hopefully it's not any worse than that.
>>
>>38273397
You're thinking of Spirit Blast, which does Bashing damage to humans, Mages, vampires, and werewolves.
>>
>>38273448
That's basically how Spirit Blast works, anon.
>>
>>38273463
Ah, I thought that was it. Either way, that's my vote is a Spirit Blast. Even though it's only bashing damage, it could still be distracting enough to open up an attack angle for Diana.

Ok, if you want to Spirit Blast, then give me a 9d10 roll (Spirit + Gnosis), best of 5 rolls or until 10 minutes pass.

It's not a rote yet, hence why we're still using Gnosis. Remember, if it was a rote it'd be Intelligence + Occult + Spirit vs. opponent's Resistance. The benefit of making it a rote is potentially Aggrivated damage when used against spirits, compared to the Lethal damage it does currently to spirits.

Is the non-rote also a contested roll?
And where are the rules for making custom rotes? This sounds like a spell unique to us, so finding an existing rote formula seems out of the question.

>>
>>38274026

>>
>>38273993
The rote version is still a contested roll vs. the opponent's Resistance.

Making a rote is similar enough to making your own custom spell (which Spirit Blast is), and that both are outlined on pages 289-291 of the Mage: the Awakening book.

I based the rote die pool off similar die pools used in Spirit magic rotes.
>>
Rolled 3, 9, 1, 2, 7, 2, 6, 4, 3 = 37 (9d10)

>>38273878
>>
>>38274053
It's a Spirit 4 spell base, so it's at least 12 exp. If you make it a Spirit 5 spell base (for the Aggrivated damage to spirits option) it's 15 exp.

I outlined this in the archives, but I figure I'd save people the trouble of looking back in them for it.

Also, remember that no matter if it's made into a rote or not, it takes 1 Mana to cast as you are making a tiny bit of spirit matter.

You begin shaping a small ball of spirit energy into your hand, and fire it at the quarterstaff-wielding person. The bolt strikes their soul and you see them flinch in pain, looking over at you and Sarah. She points the staff at you both, but before she can fire a blast off one of Diana's orbs strikes her leg. Instantly it explodes, vaporizing the poor girl's entire left leg almost from the hip down. She bellows out in pain as her quarterstaff strikes the floor, using it now for support, as she magically gathers up some of the surrounding dust and sand to create a cauterizing agent against her open wound before she bleeds out.

"Tough little bitch," Diana says, strolling over and knocking the quarterstaff away, as the woman struggles to stay upright with her one remaining leg. "Now where's the Profane Urim!"

The woman spits at Diana, who dodges the flying liquid. It impacts the ground and sizzles, smelling like rotten eggs. "I'll never betray Mistress!"

At that, you walk over and deliver a solid punch to her jaw, feeling the bone shatter at your blow. She falls over in a heap of sand and dust being kicked up, bleeding from her mouth, finally unconscious. "So... That makes four Mages we've had to deal with so far."

"Four?" Diana looks over, counting fingers. "Well... That was Rusty, one of the finer Powersmiths I've ever had the displeasure of studying their handiwork." She points at the quarterstaff, which is still glowing slightly. "She used her Magic to make some pretty sturdy and powerful artifacts, with rather unique properties."

"Like shooting bolts of energy," Sarah asks, stepping slowly over the piles of sand.

"Yeah. Which ones did you guys run into?"

You describe your encounter with Smokey Bandit, Sarah with the Space Mage (who is still unconscious, now resting with his face buried under a mountain of sand, butt sticking straight up in the air about 20 feet to your left), and how Liz and Jemma are dealing with Heimdall.

"Tsukuyomi makes five... So in theory, there's up to two more Mages left that the Mystic supposedly killed." She moans, looking in her messenger bag and pulling out some sort of geigar counter sensor device. She reads various numbers on it and groans once more. "And we're no closer to finding the Urim."

"We should check in on Liz and Jemma," you say to the other two. "And be careful, we don't know where the other two Mages are at, or what they can do." The three of you hurry over to the stairwell and walk down a flight, where the water from the sprinkers continues to seep out from the door and down the stairs. There's a fair bit of commotion echoing up from the stairwell, as the few workers and Sleepers in the building today continue to evacuate. You mentally thank God this is occuring on a Sunday and not a work week, when the Tower would be full of people going about their daily business.

"Holy fuck," Diana murmurs out, looking around the area. Save for the couple stairwells and the shafts for the elevators to go up and down, the entire floor looks like it was blown up, debris and twisted metal all around, the panicked yells of Jemma and Liz fighting Heimdall echoing out all around, with various windows having spider-web cracks running through them. You look around and see a bloody mess of what looks like jemma flying about, firing white-hot gouts of flame at Heimdall.

For her part, he looks pretty damaged, as singed flesh looks ready to flake off him, as Liz dodges a heavy slam of his fists. She taps his leg and instantly the large, muscled thing deflates as though she pricked a balloon with a pin, and his body falters, mouth hanging wide open.

"Duck," Jemma yells as she quickly forms a miniature Sun and flies at him, shoving it in his mouth. He gulps in shock as the sun explodes, and for a moment you think his entire head is about to go poof. Instead, he just falls onto his back, head smouldering as the inside of his mouth looks like a smouldering crater. She slowly lands, tries to put weight on her mangled leg, then stops, instead preferring to hover a couple inches off the ground.

"About damn time he ran out of Mana," Liz moans, hurrying over to heal Jemma's leg.

"You guys ok," you ask, hurrying over as best you can, making sure to not get hung up on anything that's still smouldering or looks to be particularly sharp or pointy.

"I'm ok," Liz replies, who besides being completely soaked is little the worse for wear. "Jemma here took the brunt of the damage."

"Yeah, well I tried punching him really hard," she replies, grinning at us. "He didn't take to kind to that, and decided to use me as a rag doll for a couple seconds before I fried his hand off."

"Leave the punching to the blockhead here," Diana replies, thumbing at you. "He's the only one dumb enough to get away with it."

"Did he mention where the Urim was located," Sarah asks, aiding Liz in healing her sister.

At that, both shake their head in disapproval. "Well, we've dealt with 4 Mages and wrecked three floors, so lets try to find it before we accidentally collapse the whole building."

Jemma grabs the gun and smacks Liz, and her eyes also snap out of whatever haze the unseen foe was trying to put her in. Sarah just looks off into the distance, the iris in her eyes growing wide.

You mentally ask for the spirit to temporarily extend it's mental buffing to the others in the circle, which it denotes as being possible but will require Mana from you to keep active. You do so and grant it some Mana, having it inform you when it needs more. You drag the man to his feet by lifting him up from the collar of his shirt, pulling him close to you.

"One chance dickwad, where's the Urim. Otherwise you're taking a fist-induced dirt nap."

He focuses his gaze on you, and you feel him trying to worm his thoughts into your mind. The other four look on in a mix of fear and worry. After a few tense moments his smile turns into a look of horror, lips curling into a scowl that makes him look ready to scream in fear as you seep your quiet but raging anger and hatred out of your thoughts to assault his invasive tendrils.

"T... The 100th floor, office 1010!" He tries to pull himself free, feet kicking wildly against your knees.

"Thank you," you say, before punching him square on in the face. His nose breaks under your swift punch, head flopping back and forth. You drop the sack of unconscious flesh to the ground, the pressure of his thoughts quickly being lifted from your own train of thought. "Let's go."

The others nod in agreement, and Liz induces a magical coma in him before you five quickly depart up the nearest stairwell. You reach the 100th floor quickly, and track down the office he described. Inside stands Tsukuyomi, holding onto something that looks like a crystal orb.

"I must say, I didn't think Tomas would fold so easily," she says, a hint of disappointment in her voice. "Then again, he always was weak-willed."

You mentally ask the machine gun spirit to assume the largest, most powerful form it can, even offering up a bit of Mana to help him assume the form. He's all to kind to oblige, and you begin to shift into a rather entreanched stance as a chain gun materializes in your hands, the weight of the weapon nearly pulling you to the ground. You stay steady and standing though, as the four behind you gasp in shock, Tsukuyomi's eyes growing wide. You really dislike using guns, but hopefully this is a case where quantity will outweight quality.

"Don't fuck with my family," you yell at her as you pull on the trigger. The gun spins to life as she throws up a magical barrier of some kind, and the stream of red-hot metal slugs fly out and impact her force field. You can see her straining behind the barrier, ripples growing deeper and wider as she is slowly pushed back, metal fragments going around the shield and piercing the window behind her. The window itself shatters instantly as a gust of cold air blows in, sucking out the fresh air inside the room and seeping in the thinner atmosphere from outside.

"You... Little... Bitch!" She struggles to stay on her feet as the shield bends in closer and closer to her person, as one eye looks back at the quickly encroaching abyss that is an outside fall from 100 stories up in the air. The gun barrel grows white-hot red as the last few bullets fly out of it, the magazine of the spirit empty. You thank the spirit for his use before letting him go, drained of nearly all its Numira, barely enough for him to go back to the Shadow World and rest.

> [1/2]
>>
> [2/2]

Tsukuyomi looks back at you, flecks of broken glass and bullet fragments scratching up her form, including one noticeable bullet hole going through her right leg, the wound cauterized automatically from the white hot bullet burning through her. "Ok, punk. You want to bring out the big guns?" The orb glows brightly in her hand, and she lifts it up above her head. "O' Great Ones above, please grant your servant the Power needed to Smite your foes!"

That orb can be many things, and I don't much like those possibilities. Knock her ass out before she has a chance to complete the invocation!
>>
You don't know what she's doing, but you don't want her to finish it. You quickly dash over to her, as Liz and the others begin to throw various spells her way. Some of them strike her (including what you suspect is a lightning bolt to her chest) but she doesn't falter. You reach for the orb to pry it from her hands or smash it, and the moment when you touch it you are struck with an overwhelming sense of fealty and the desire to serve whomever this orb draws it's power from.

"Do you see now, just how weak and puny you struggle about?" Tsukuyomi looks down at you, as her eyes begin glowing white with raw magical power coursing through her body. "This is but a hint of what the Exarchs are capable of!" The orb pulsates outward, and a force of kinetic energy blows you off your feet and back to the others. You collapse amongst them all and you five come crashing to the ground. The windows shatter all around her as the wave of kinetic energy expands outward, collapsing walls around you as you feel the building shudder underneath your feet.

"NOW," she speaks, as the orb is slowly absorbed into her body. "NO LIVING THING CAN HARM ME! SWEAR FEALTY TO YOUR NEW MISTRESS!"

>>

Technically speaking they are not alive, though many of the ones you talk to will say otherwise.
>>
>>38278853
Oh, I wasn't paying attention.

Well, either way, fuck her up with a spirit. Spirits are not alive in the same sense we are, ergo, no living thing will touch her. It's the Witch-king of Angmar weakness.
>>

Good, then spirit once again proves to be supremely useful. Even if she ain't bluffing, we can just get our buddies in the shadow world to do our dirty work for a few points of mana. God Spirit Arcana is awesome!

No, i definitely agree. The flavor of the spirit isn't what's important here. I mean, our character does work in a law office, so getting her on a technicality like this is totally in character.

So no living thing can harm her, huh? Time to see if she means that in a literal sense or a figurative sense. You call forth the Lightning spirit from your brass knuckles and ask for it to give up every last bit of power it has for one large lightning bolt. It complies, giving all of itself save for a tiny, tiny amount to keep itself alive, and with a mighty throw, not unlike Zeus throwing a lightning bolt, strike the Orb as it begins to be absorbed into her torso.

Her body recoils in shock as the orb shows a large crack in it, but it remains intact. Her body shudders as the lightning courses through her body, before she looks over at you.

"DIE." She magically lifts your body up into the air, and with a flick of the wrist tosses you through one of the shattered windows, as Liz cries out in vain, hand outstretched to grab onto yours.

Writing. Probably one or two more scenes for tonight.
>>
You don't even know if this is possible, as your prowess with Forces isn't as good as you'd like, but this is as good a time as any. You try and form a momentary solid force of kinetic energy to push your feet off of, or create a force of energy to throw you back inside, but her magical throw was too strong and too fast, and what few feet you move back to the building isn't outweighing the pull of gravity to the ground below.

"<Spirits! HELP!>" You cross over into the Shadow World as you fall, the quickly approaching cement turning into a quickly approaching mushy swamp, as you magically call out for any form of aid and willing to pay whatever amount of Mana they desire to fly and grab or catch you. Instantly Tony, a hawk you were considering to pick up as a Familiar of your own, swoops down and latches onto your shoulders.

"<Mana please,>" it asks, a strain of effort in it's voice. You quickly feed it as much Mana as you can swing, and feel his claws grow in size, the beating of it's wings on your back growing much heavier as your descent slows as he grows several sizes larger, and soon it looks as though he is going to eat you as a snack, before you slowly come to a stop about 30 feet off the ground.

> I lied, not the last one. Next one is last one

"<Hang on one second Tony, I may have another passenger for you.>" You call out for Bruce, asking if it's possible for you to borrow his services for a moment. He agrees, and after paying his rather hefty summoning fee, he soon materializes on the ground, bowing politely to you. You wave your hand in greeting, having Tony fly down to pick up Lee. You quickly catch him up to speed, and explain that this person is only vulnerable to spirit-fueled damage, and that the orb seems to be what she is drawing her power from.

"<And once she is defeated, you will no longer need my services?>"

"<No, you'll be free to go back to your journey.>"

He nods in agreement, sheathing himself in his violet and red illusion you first met him in, and you three quickly ascend through the portal you made to enter the Shadow World, back to the Material World and back to the 100th floor.

You hear the sounds of battle going on overhead, as bits of glass and the crackling of lightning echo out overhead. Tony bemoans how this is pretty dangerous even for him in his increased size, though you urge him to stay around in case she tries this again.

Your eyes finally see into the room as Tsukuyomi throws another lightning bolt at Liz, as Jemma struggles to keep Sarah and Diana alive as there are large scorch marks on their torsos.

"Michael!" Liz's eyes avert from Tsukuyomi to you, her magical barrier shuddering under the bolt bouncing against it.

On her part, Tsukuyomi looks surprised at our arrival, as Tony moves his legs forward, giving you both momentum to enter into the room at full running speed. "WHAT!?"

"It pays to have friends, bitch!" At that, you shape what little energy you have left into spirit energy, sheathing your fists with their energy. Tony releases you both and you two descend to the floor, Lee's face a snarl of rage and fury, your fists glowing white with spirit energy.

"<Go low, I'll go high,>" you magically mutter to Lee, who nods in approval. She fires a bolt of lightning at Lee, who quickly dodges her arm before the bolt flies out as Tony squaks in disapproval, barely avoiding her bolt of lightning. He slides in first with a quick series of blows to the left side of her body, as you hear her knee pop and leg wobble.

"YOU WHORE," she exclaims in pain, her balance wobbley as her eyes look down at Lee, who is quickly backing away for another strike.

"Over here bitch," bellows out from her mouth as you land a series of blows to her stomach, her arms flying to her chest to protect the orb from your attempted blows. Instead, you take the opportunity to smash her face, as she recoils in pain.

"ENOUGH!" She shoots a pair of bolts at you both, and while Lee dodges one the other strikes your left shoulder. Your body screams in pain as your arm goes limp. "YOU INSECTS ARE BENEATH ME, BENEATH THE EXARCHS! BOW TO THE WHIMS OF YOUR GODS!"

Seeing the opening even as your body tells you to do the exact opposite, you look to see Lee mimicking your movements as he closes in on her. You stretch your right palm forward, focusing all your remaining energy and effort into this final blow, and your palm strikes the orb sticking out of her torso at the exact same moment as Lee's palm strikes the orb sticking out of her back. The Orb crackles more, and her body shudders in pain as you pull in close to her.

"I bow to no God," you whisper to her, as you feel the Orb shatter in your palm. Her glowing white eyes look onward in shock, breath leaving her body.

The Orb explodes outward in raw magic, as your eyes see nothing but white light engulf everything around you.

Everything from here-on out is meta discussion. Currently, you've got 1 Mana left.

Current things to get caught up on:

Michael has 3 Lethal damage, and his left arm is currently immobile/limp, with no motor control over it.

Also, as things stand I think next quest will be the last one, as time to set aside for running is getting harder to nail down and real life priorities are starting to require more attention.

I had hoped to have it go a bit longer, but I'm sure you guys know how annoying/time consuming real life can be.

In a general sense, this is how I tend to run my games in real life (try to follow the spirit of the law/rules, allow for some Rule of Cool so long as it's tempered or limited in use, and mix in some anime/pop culture jokes).

*OUT OF GAME POST*

Okay, I'm fairly new to RPGs and completely new to /tg/, (I'm a newfag, yes yes) and I really don't understand how this works... Is each decision merely voted on by each thread user, or is it based on 'rolls' or is there some more ingenious system at work...?
>>
>>38281235
To determine what action is taken in a quest, we vote. Sometimes the quest runner will call for dice rolls to determine the success of an action.

It's honestly like playing a regular RPG only there's an insane democracy going on inside the player's head.

Most quests on /tg/ are run where the person (GM or QM) will present a scene or moment of action, and at the end allow players to influence how the story/action plays out via options (the green text I write at the end of each scene).

For my quest it certainly helps to know the system ahead of time (if you use/abuse it) but I tried to be welcoming to anyone new to the game, and encourage new people to ask questions.
