Stage 60: Bakemono.

You stand in a field of grass, the mask over your face a simple cloth square dyed with angular patterns. Tied to your horns, it flutters faintly in the breeze as you clutch your sword tightly in one hand. The bodies around you, those standing, and those you've cut down, are those of your family, your friends, fellow warriors of Clan Ryo. They turned on you, they always turn on you. It doesn't matter how obedient, how efficient, how good you are, they always turn against you.

Not this time. You're not letting them have their way this time.

They come for you and you cut them down, slicing their bodies open and apart: one stroke, one life. You move through them, the closest to you, the ones you trusted the most, your loved ones. They fall like rattan bundles, cut down in their prime by your effortless skill. All die before you. You stand in the red field, looking down at their bodies: your kohai and her lover; your bride to be; your fortuneteller; the priestess; the one with E.S.P. All dead, by your hand.

No more. No more will they hold you back. You're done with all of them, and they'll all pay now. You reach up to tear the mask off

there's a hand reaching for your shoulder.

[] “You know, it's incredibly dangerous to wake us by surprise.”
[] Gently stop them from waking Akari.
[] Open your eyes and glare at them.
[] Gently wrap your tail around their ankle.

Well lots of possibilities anon. Just a dream, a dream leaking into reality as we're woken by, I dunno, Yuuhi or something, or just a surprise assault by the forces of evil. They're all basically the same thing.
>>
>>38194478
But why would it mention stopping them from waking Akari when it seems like we're the one dreaming?
>>
>>38194478
The title combined with the cliche 'they're all going to betray me' dream suggests we may have wanted to accept the gift of the scarf, or are now under the effects of a curse.

The demigoddess of Destruction had a dream about murdering the ones who wronged her after a large ammount of sex with one of her wives. Also, waking up assassins trained in avoiding getting killed in their sleep may be a challenge

[X] “You know, it's incredibly dangerous to wake us by surprise.”
[X] Gently stop them from waking Akari.
[X] Gently wrap your tail around their ankle.

Your tail slides around a slender, cloth wrapped ankle and the talons of your right hand come up against a small, calloused palm. Your left hand remains where it is, around Akari's side and along her back. The person freezes in place, tense and worried, though not necessarily frightened. You murmur softly, “Akari-niji-chan isn't always conscious before she wakes up, and neither of us can be held responsible for our actions if you startle us out of sleep, Inau-san.”

Akari is laying across your body, as you lie back on the couch, sleeping peacefully and deeply, her open robe covering you both, though you've managed to mostly keep yours on. It's still dark out, you can see, and the only light there is is coming from the reflection of moonlight off the wall of the compound. Not that you need it to see the delicately androgynous form of Tokei Isusangi, also called Inau-chan. Your eyes work just fine in the dark.

“Please forgive me, Ryukusa-sama; I thought you might be cold....” She holds up a soft and unfolded blanket in her other hand. At least she had the presence of mind to wake you before trying to cover either of you. Inau-san is also blushing quite a bit, and is only wearing her linen wrappings, and a simple robe for sleeping. It's interesting that she keeps her breasts, ankles and wrists wrapped though – Yui-chan does that to, but Yui-chan is an oni-child.

[] Gently slip out from under Akari-niji-chan, and let her sleep; you two can talk quietly enough.
[] Take Akari-niji-chan to bed, then come back out.
[] Ask her what she is doing up this....um, late, it's not even much past midnight, kamidamnit.
[] Gently wake Akari-chan with a kiss and send her to bed.
[] Let her place the blanket and then go on with what she was doing.

[XX] Take Akari-niji-chan to bed, then come back out.
[X] Ask her what she is doing up this....um, late, it's not even much past midnight, kamidamnit.
[X] Gently wake Akari-chan with a kiss and send her to bed.
[+] Pet the niji-chan.

You carefully sit up, and Akari shifts in your arms, her eyes fluttering open only for a few instants before closing once more. You gently pick her up in a princess carry, and kiss her softly. That wakes her up, but only for a moment; you thoroughly exhausted her apparently, or she feels incredibly safe with you. You're not even sure if you could manage that level of sleepiness anymore.

Your hands don't hurt at all as you walk to your bedroom, and open the door with your tail. Everyone is still sleeping peacefully, though now Kiku-chan is spooned against her younger sister's big spoon, and Yui is sprawled over half the bed and barely covered by a blanket, much less her robe. You set Akari down in the bed, next to Yui who rolls over and becomes part octopus. Akari smiles sleepily and you pull the blanket over them both, stroking your kohai's soft black hair as she drifts back to deep sleep in the arms of her lover.

You stand up, looking down at all of them

>betrayers, liars, backstabbers, fakes

and frown at the fragmented dream. It wasn't you, you're sure of that now. You don't know what it was, but that wasn't you in the dream.
>>
>>38195300
You slip out silently, sparing one last glance at your loved ones, sleeping peacefully and safe, and you can't help but smile at their closeness, the warmth they bring to your heart just by being safe. Inau-chan is still in the living room, the blanket folded and sitting on the arm of the couch and she's picking up your teacups. As you belt your robe closed, you glance at her still blushing face, though she's a little more composed than she was when she woke you.

“So why are you up this early, or late, Inau-san? I know we weren't that noisy, and I know we didn't wake you.” She blushes a little more deeply at your frank words.

“I don't sleep very much at all, Ryukusa-sama. A few hours, here and there, usually just after nightfall and a little before dawn begins. Tsukiyomi-no-Mikoto and I are pretty well acquainted.” You're not really sure she means literally or figuratively. “It is common among spirit-children like myself.” Demigoddesses and demigods, obviously.

>Stage 60: Bakemono.

"Obake (お化け?) and bakemono (化け物?) are a class of yōkai, preternatural creatures in Japanese folklore. Literally, the terms mean a thing that changes, referring to a state of transformation or shapeshifting.

These words are often translated as ghost, but primarily they refer to living things or supernatural beings who have taken on a temporary transformation, and these bakemono are distinct from the spirits of the dead. However, as a secondary usage, the term obake can be a synonym for yūrei, the ghost of a deceased human being.

A bakemono's true form may be an animal such as a fox (kitsune), a raccoon dog (tanuki), a badger (mujina), a transforming cat (bakeneko), the spirit of a plant—such as a kodama, or an inanimate object which may possess a soul in Shinto and other animistic traditions. Obake derived from household objects are often called tsukumogami.

A bakemono usually either disguises itself as a human or appears in a strange or terrifying form such as a hitotsume-kozō, an ōnyūdō, or a noppera-bō. In common usage, any bizarre apparition can be referred to as a bakemono or an obake whether or not it is believed to have some other form, making the terms roughly synonymous with yōkai."

[+] ….I've been having more trouble sleeping....

Inau-san slips into the kitchen to wash the cups, and you follow her. Hands tucked into the sleeves of your sleeping robe. You smile at her rather shy reaction to the suggestion of your intimate relations, but you note that said shyness doesn't include any disdain or disapproval. Maybe it's an Ainu thing.

“Would you like some tea as well? I'll make a pot this time....” You say, lightly moving up behind her and purposefully brushing your body against hers ever so slightly. Yes, that's the reaction you expected: she's not adverse to the idea girls of liking lilies, though you haven't any idea if she is a lily herself. You fill the pot and smile at her, and she ducks her head, her cheeks almost as red as Kiku-chan's hair. Even your unusual hands don't distract her from that light brush of breast against her arm.

You slip away to set the pot on the stove, and relax in the corner of the kitchen, watching her finish cleaning the tisanes Akari had prepared, dumping the tea out and rinsing them carefully and thoroughly. “Are all demigods truly insomniacs then?” you ask politely.

“Not insomniacs, really,” she answers with no hesitation. “More that most demigods are incapable of being idle. Or bodies and minds push us to be active, regardless of whatever else is going on. We do not need that much sleep, our bodies are much stronger and more healthy than others. Our elements are, I suppose, more balanced than others tend to be, in a natural way.” She sets the tisanes aside but the shake of your head leads to her putting them away as you pull out the jar of green tea syrup.
>>
>>38196299
“So you don't actually suffer from ADHD or ADD – you just are naturally active in body and mind alike....” Mulling that thought over, you can see why you're having trouble all right. She's dealt with it all her life; you have only started dealing with it recently. “Is it something that happens from birth?”

Inau-san hesitates. “Well, yes, I was told so. My father used to have to give me low doses of aconite to make me sleep when I was a baby.” You glance at the tattoo along her right shoulder, recalling Akari's mention of the poison used on Ainu arrows. It would be very easy to give you low doses for most of your life, until it seemed like a natural state of being. “Once I was old enough to not keep him up all night with my crying it was easier for him."

Such long term dosing would also leave you immune to aconite when you were no longer receiving it, because of your Water nature. You wonder if Oba-san realized that.

“It was mostly bad dreams this time, in my case....but I have been sleeping less and less. Sometimes I don't sleep for days. It's a problem, I think.”

She looks at you curiously, her hands tucked behind her back, her short robe – a boy's sleeping robe really – most open, revealing the bindings along her chest and her rather cute silk boy-shorts style sleepwear. “Well, when I'm hunting or dealing with a special problem, I can easily stay up for several days without any problems. Do you think it is part of your Mikoto that allows you to do that?”

Her question comes as something of a surprise. Apparently her mother and Kamuy Fuchi didn't see fit to inform her of your true nature.

[+] “What have you been told of me, anyways?”

You tilt your head, somewhat confused. “I was under the impression you knew about my peculiar nature to start with....was I mistaken?”

Inau-san doesn't blush, or seem embarrassed by the question, her forthright answer somewhat strange considering her earlier reactions. “Well, auntie said that you were a little peculiar in your love, and that you would inherit the mantle of Ame-no-Horobi-no-Mikado, but mostly she sent me to make sure you had the assistance you needed for the babies and to protect Er Yin and her friend.”

….seems they wanted to let you explain yourself, rather than explain for you. Which is respectable. Apparently the kamuy are a little less forthcoming than the kami tend to be about such things.

“So....you don't know who fathered my children?”

She looks quite startled. “I thought you know who fathered your children, Ryukusa-sama! Do you need me to find him?”

….oh, this should be fun!

“Oh, I know exactly who fathered Kiki-hime's and Akari-niji-chan's children. I didn't think your aunt wouldn't have told you, really.” You pull the boiling water off the stove and fill the cups. “You see, they're really both mine.” She blinks, and then slowly starts turning red. “Everyone in my room, and Er Yin-sensei as well, they're all my lovers, in one way or another, and with one exception I've made love with each of them, so the 'peculiarity of my love' is that I like lilies, is all. And I happen to have one wife and four lovers.”

Ryukusa is rather more well-endowed though. No wonder Inau was going crimson.

She's beet red and fidgeting as you take the spoon and dip it into the tea, twisting it to collect the right amount before placing it in her cup. “Oh, I didn't realize Ryukusa-sama had that kind of surgery....”

“Well it's – uh, no, wait, what?! Oh, no! No, I'm a girl, even though they use the wrong honorifics, really!” You look her in the eyes, and she looks shyly back. “I thought you'd seen before, I guess not! No, I'm definitely a girl.”

She looks baffled then, and her face turns even more red. Her blood pressure is awfully high. “Um....if I may ask....if you do not mind....”

[X] “Oh, you can ask, certainly!”
[X] Well, if she isn't sure....you could open your robe for her!

You look at her interested, as you take the spoon out of her tea, the syrup completely dissolved. You hand her the tea, and smile. “Certainly you may ask me whatever you like. I don't mind, since you are related, in a way.” You wrap the spoon in the syrup once more and set it in your own cup, and then turn to her. “Of course, if you want to be sure....” You start to un-knot your belt and she turns a deep sort of red, which probably would be heart attack territory for any normal human being.

“Um, I meant, I would like to ask...that is....” She doesn't look away when you finish untying your robe, though.

So you open your robe to prove you're a girl.

Inau-san looks at you, seeing that you are in fact a girl.

In the tiniest little voice ever, she whispers the smallest “....oh....” sound! So cute! …..wait, why is she swaying?

“Holy crap, are you okay?!”

Well, she's pinching her nose shut and her head is bowed forward. You had to catch her before she collapsed – which totally isn't helping with her blood pressure issues – because her knees gave way. You take her to the floor gently, and clean the blood out of her bindings and her own robe, as well as off the floor. She mumbles something softly. “Excuse me?”

She murmurs almost inaudibly, “....you're all clean down there....” It would have been inaudible to a human, for sure.

It takes you a moment to figure out what the heaven she's talking about. “Oh, yeah, all dragonettes are. The only fur I ever got was on my tail,” you point out, showing her the soft stripe of midnight blue fur that stretches from your lower back to the fins of your tail. “Except for our eyebrows and hair, and sometimes tail fur, we don't grow anything like that anywhere. I think it's fifty-fifty for oni-girls, and you get all sorts with youkai-children.”

Pulling a handkerchief from ~Nowhere~ you gently clean her face, and she doesn't resist at all. She's totally dazed. “Well, I know what you were going to ask....I'm kind of different from most dragon girls. I have a whole lot of Jing, and when I have sex with other dragon girls....well that special thing happens....so I'm really their father. Sort of.” You smile and she blinks stupidly at you. Well, maybe not stupidly, more like 'totally blew a gasket in her head' blinks. “I'm not really a dragonette....I'm like you. WOAH, careful, Inau-chan!”

You clean up her bindings and robe a second time, and include her shorts this time, because buy the kami she has got to have one of the worst blood pressure issues you've ever seen in your life. For kami's sake, she's a demigod, she just told you they were totally healthy! “I mean, I'm a demigoddess, or I will be, when I have my mikoto back!” you explain in a rush.

[] “What did you think I meant by that?!”

[X] I thought that only happened in stupid cartoons! ….medic!

You set a reminder for yourself that contrary to everything you supposedly know about the real world, there are in fact people who suffer spontaneous nosebleeds when confronted with ecchi situations. Apparently Inau-chan has a case of delicate blood pressure sensitivity. At least she's not a hemophiliac as well, because at this point, she's probably lost about a pint of blood.

Well, not really. It wasn't THAT ridiculous; just a few drops here and there, but it was definitely a nosebleed caused by her blood pressure spiking.

You princess carry (what's that, four times in one night? This is habit forming!) the dazed demigoddess and lay her on the couch gently, kneeling next to her. A larger handkerchief doused in the cold oceanic waters laid across her forehead seems to reduce her blood pressure to something manageable. A little blood manipulation on your part and she sighs softly, nearly passing out.

Painting her neck, upper chest, and shoulders with the cold cloth, she finally recovers her wits enough to sit up carefully. “G-Gomennasai, Ryukusa-sama,” she starts, and you look up at her, a little worried she might faint on you. “....I haven't been around girls all that often....”

….huh?

“Well, please don't tell you you're a yuri-fangirl. Shojou-ai is all right, but those fangirls are kind of crazy, and if you do that too often, i'll have to replace all my carpets with linoleum.” She blushes faintly. “Oh, hey, don't start that again! I mean, what did you think I meant?”

She flushes, rather than blushes – embarrassment, rather than the sensitivity of a girl. “....my father works on a very small island, for the military, and the only school was an all boy school, so....” Well, that explains a few things after all. “I had to learn how to fit in, and things....became kind of complicated later when I met my cousins and they were very different than I was expecting.” Sounds like she's got same-sex-school issues, except inverted. You've heard about such things, but never encountered it before.

“I don't really cross-dress, you know. My business suits are tailored for me, by me, I'm pretty sure they're very feminine.” You consider, and really, you can't help it. “I should warn you, I guess, that Kiku-chan really makes a cute reverse trap. Er Yin-sensei and I both dress her nicely.”

“Re....reverse....trap?”

….oh, all hells and darkness. “Ah, never mind. So, no, I'm not a transvestite, and I'm not a guy, and even though they call me aniki, I really am totally a girl. Sorry for the confusion.”

Shaking her head she bows over her folded hands. “I am sorry to trouble you, with such matters, Ryukusa-sama, please forgive your humble servant.”

….um. Okay, this needs real clarification.

[] Are you really my servant? This isn't a temporary thing?
[] Hold on, Inau-chan, just how long are you meant to stay with me?
[] ….exactly what duties did your aunt ask you to perform....exactly?

“Well, as I keep telling others, you really haven't done anything to ask me for forgiveness. It's more like the other way around. But I am a little confused....what is it that your aunt explained to you you would be doing?” She looks a little confused, and you phrase it more carefully – her Japanese isn't that strange, but her social niceties are a little....well, a lot weird. “I mean to ask, what exactly did your aunt ask you to do.”

She smiles, understanding your question. You hope. “Ah, she wishes me to assist you in protecting your family, and to serve as midwife for all your children.” Yes, she said that the first time you met....no, wait, she didn't. She said she was going to help you take care of your wife and serve as midwife, as well as to assist you. There was no mention of how long or in what capacities outside of that.

“....so, you're to stay as long as I have need of you, is that it?”

She bows her head once. “I am to assist you in every way I can. Yuuhi-sama said she is planning on remaining with you as long as you will allow it; Shoko-sama is also here to help. They say that you are a very good head-woman and can be trusted to make the decisions that must be made correctly and with the guidance of the kamuy.”

“Well, I wouldn't go that far, but I take care of my own. Given that the chances of me causing my other lovers to become pregnant is very high, you might be with me for a long time.” She nods, though her cheeks are pretty pink. You sigh. “And I'm inclined to trust Shoko-san and Yuuhi-chan's opinions as well, though Akari might have some doubts still.” You consider it....you consider it hard, but you know, it's just too good to pass up.

“There is one other thing I should point out, Inau-san....” She looks at you curiously. “....I've made love with more than half of the people who consider themselves my servants....often more than one at a time.” Kiku, Akari, Yui....yep, more than half.

….and, there she goes, out like a light. Yeah, you really need to look into some blood pressure medication for her.

You clean up the poor thing and let her rest on the couch, laying on some cold compresses as you consider what to do next. You forgot to ask about the aconite, but you'll have time. Much more important is the sick, queasy feeling deep in your Pearl that is screaming that something awful has happened. Something bad enough that sleep is out of the question. Something bad enough that you are worried about Rie, Reiha, Chisato, and Peta-chan, just because they're not here.

Your cousin's words come back to haunt you. 'She's incredibly unbalanced now. A simple push will turn her into a bakemono.' And then the dream....'done with all of them. They'll all pay now.'

And a mask.

Tearing off a mask....

Oh, heaven. Heaven and burning light.

….Wakaba. It was Wakaba. She's becoming bakemono. And you know which kind....

Noppera-bo....

No-Face.

>To Be Continued.

When might you post more stories of the characters? Just finished reading Akari, Yui, and Kiki's tales and they were excellent.
>>
>>38199545

oh fuck.

I forgot about her since the last two threads

Okay, if she was dealing with the Catholics, we can still do damage control.

>>38199570

Do we know if the transformation is still going on, or if it's over?

Also, what does Ryukuza know of Noppera-bo, and would it be Kiku's job to deal with one?

Thanks for the thread! Incredible as always!
>>
>>38199545
>Noppera-bo.
Wait, what do those do, in this universe? Don't they mostly just scare people by impersonating people before wiping off their faces at awkward moments?
>>
>>38199590
It would have been exceedingly unlikely for someone to have called it, but on the off chance it had been called, a bonus would have been in order. Not a family bonus, but more like a treasure or situation gift.

>>38199636
As far as classifications of youkai go, in Ryukuza's world bakemono are basically 'those transformed into youkai' instead of 'transforming youkai' (which would be obake). The fundamental changes in the nature of those who become bakemono are too drasdtic, often destroying intellect as much as spirit.

On the other hand, Ryukusa could be overreacting - it might just be a dream, or it may have been a prophetic dream: she's definitely got a measure of the family ESP.
>>
>>38199660
I have a story in the works currently, but it may take a week or so, perhaps two.

>>38199662
Yes, that is somethgin that could be important. Non-Shinto/Buddhist exorcisms used on spirit-children go very badly in Ryukusa's experince.

Ryukusa doesn't know that it has gone on at all - just a drream and a sick, sinking feeling that could be recognition of having sent her own kind up agaisnt the Catholics unprepared for what might have been waiting - they were doing bad things to the Nogitsune clan and the Cat youkai....

>>38199699
Yes, that is what most humans know them to be and in human experience, that is what they do.

Unfortunately, spirit-children's experiences with Noppera-bo is something quite different, as they are usually spirit-children or other youkai that have been stripped of identity, humanity, and sanity.

In RL stories there are typically two types - relatively harmless but frightening or even helpful; and outright terrifying tormentors. Spirit-children in Ryukuza's world usually deal with the second kind.
>>
>>38199545
Time for a certain Catholic Priest to banish the youkai out of her.

AMMEEEEEEN!
>>
>>38199886
Thanks for running.
Any idea when you can run next?
>>
>>38199949
Either Tuesday or Wednesday, timing subject to change.

.
>>
>>38199886
So basically she's driven her so mad by her obsession with Ryukusa that she has forgotten who she is and gone insane enough to become a monster? And aside from the typical physical strength, she's probably going to try to kill and replace those close to us?
>>
>>38200014
Her obsession was more with Akari, and your cousin exacerbated the matter.
>>
>>38200030
Why is our cousin so a shit?
>>
>>38200014
No, I think its a Catholic exorcism gone wrong, because Christian exorcisms react badly to Shinto entities.
Not in the "it was super effective!" way but in the "u dun goofed, nigga" and the birth of an eldritch abomination.
>>
Well, it looks like we'll have to deal with the Catholics and our crazy family member tonight, after all.

We'll definitively need Kiku, Yui and maybe Kushinada (being part-divine, I think she will tank whatever the Catholics have that can damage the other spirit-children). Inau's tracking skills will be useful, too, if they can find the girl.
>>
>>38200186
You have Hidesato in your barrier, not Kushinada, but same difference.

>>38200047
Kamuy of Insanity.

'nuff said.
>>
>>38200047

He's a demigod of madness and the reincarnation of the one who killed Kiki's previous incarnation, among other people.

Also, he needed someone to hinder us and he only had this method to achieve it.
>>
>>38200232

Doesn't Kushinada own us a service as well?

I remember you telling us that she'll have to do what we asked unless it was beyond her capacities (using the example of her laughing to our face if we asked her to fight a major oni while she's several decades past her prime)
>>
>>38200353
She does, and your command was to have her serve under Hinata-hakase and heal, seeking redemption and purifying herself.

She's still too new an acolyte to be allowed out of the temple, sadly. But Hidesato is no one to laugh at....
>>
>>38200412

Thanks!
