You are Reinhold Eschenwald, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

After freeing the carriages and seeing to Takamaru's wounds, you and the others are back on the way to the castle.

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a fearsome DIRE WOLF!
>Much larger than their the other types of wolf, the Dire Wolf's size also means that they are also that much more dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her dear friend!
>But while dire wolves are massive, they still don't -quite- stand on the same level as people.

After Marianne's safely inside the carriage, you close the door behind her.

"Reinhold?" Marianne shouts through the small window of the carriage door. "What are you doing!? Don't tell me that you're about to chase after Luciana right now!"
"I'm not," you reply, shaking your head. "I'm riding up front with the driver just in case something else comes up."
"...oh," she breathes a sigh of relief. "Thank you."

You're really not in any mood to ride inside the carriage with Marianne and the others anyways... that means either casual talk or crying, and you'd prefer to avoid both of those options. So instead, you take a seat next to the driver of the carriage and keep watch as you ride back towards he castle.

Over on the other carriage, you notice that Reya had the same thing as you.

There are more guards posted at the gate than usual, most likely because of the Salamander sighting that Sir Vincent went out to take care of. They wave at you in a friendly manner when they spot you riding up front with the carriage driver, but the solemn look on your face quickly chases away any pleasant mood that had been present.

Right, I missed a few threads. So far as I can tell, that crazy hobo/conspiracy theorist from several threads back was just foreshadowing this turn of events?

If we go the throneroom with everyone together we'll have a better chance of getting ALL the information to the king. Going off what just our memory is may not yield all relevant information. Get the lolis to a safe spot then take Marianne+Takamaru to king and leave Reya as the lolikeeper.

I like how they think that doing this is going to guarantee sovereignty, when all it's actually going to do is call down both Marconetti and Granache and all of their allies down on their heads like the hammer of the divine.

To paraphrase Tony Stark: There is no way that this ends up with them coming out of this on top.

Even if they take out Lucianna, the vengeance that will be wrought will exceed any notions of political discourse whatsoever.

Honestly, if I were Ancelottan royalty, I'd take the hostage. Ancelotta's been on everyone's shit list for a good while now, and a war is pretty much inevitable. No point in keeping a good face when everyone hates your guts anyway, so might as well do the one thing you can to keep them at bay a little while longer.

And while everyone's fretting about Princess Luciana being abducted, I'm hauling my despotic ass out of here the first chance I get.

They also have a habit of starting wars that makes all thought of politics, peace, and low body counts go out the window faster than Reinhold goes through leviathan heads.

I can't help but think it'd be better to track them from the air with the assistance of someone like Arnaud rather than trying to do it from ground level.

Especially since GOFAST means if he starts raising walls or spikes once we're within his range, we're guaranteed to smash headlong into them on account of limited maneuverability.

That, and I'm a little worried that trying to follow the trail they're leaving might be complicated if he's tricky enough to have remotely set fake tracks in the earth to try and shake pursuers.

So what's our kidnappers' ideal scenario? Luciana is married off, Celestino begrudgingly abandons his war plans, Reinhold dies from netoraritis, Marconetti and Ancellotta have awkward royal family reunions?
>>
>>38163066
Losing Luciana either by death or escape basically results in them being so unbelievably fucked it isn't funny, and even if everything goes as well as possible for them, she isn't going to live forever.

The meatgrinder that's going to happen when the dam bursts is going to make escaping safely ridiculously uncertain, as would the hypervigilance that's going to spring up in response to the kidnapping.

"We incinerate anyone who sets foot across your borders. Hurt her and we burn your entire fucking country to the ground. Return her unharmed and the collateral damage an invasion would cause might just dissuade us from butchering every last one of you"

It's like they're bank robbers taking hostages in order to demand transportation. Sure, they're probably going to come after you, but you're a smarmy asshole and you probably think all you need is to get out from under the gun in the short term in order to vanish yourself entirely.

After the carriages come to a full stop, you hop down to the ground and hurry to open the carriage door... or rather, you lift it off of the broken hinges and drop it to the ground.

You hear surprised murmurs from the guards posted, naturally they're surprised to see the dainty princess casually carrying a weapon akin to what the King collects, much less one as long as she is tall.

Once Marianne's clear, you help Karel and Emilio down as well.

"Marianne treated him as best she could, but he still needs to see a doctor," you say to Melanie.
"Umm, okay," Melanie replies with a nod. "You two, carry him to the infirmary as quickly as you can!" she shouts to the guards who arrived with her.
"Ma'am!"

The guards do a quick salute to Melanie before carefully taking Takamaru from Reya's arms. Once he's secure, they hurry through the inner corridor of the castle with the unconscious swordsman in tow.

"Okay, he's being taken care of," Melanie says, glancing at the departing guards for a few seconds before turning back to you. "Now would you please tell me what in the world happened? You've got the same look in your eyes as Sir Gregory gets when he wants to run out and kill someone!"
"That's because he does," Marianne replies.

>The guards do a quick salute to Melanie
For a brief moment I was confused that guards would treat meido like a superior officer. Then I remembered that she is sleeping with their boss, so that is probably wise.
>>
>>38164314
She's also head meido and direct servant to the princess. Outside of military rankings she's of a higher social status than any of them.

Which is another reason why that moron who kept saying Carina being a maid was 'degrading' was so stupid.
>>
>>38164273
Do you have the Luciana commission yet?
>>
>>38164314
It's more because Melanie's the acting head maid and the head butler actually IS their boss so there's a bit of overlap in those things.
>>
>>38164158
I think it's gonna be a case of convincing not to come than it will the opposite. Pretty much every badass we know has a personal stake in this;
Greg - Rescue favorite niece
Ariane - Rescue favorite niece
Nico - Rescue cousin
Sylvie - Rescue Dad
Thierri - Rescue best friend
Marianne - Rescue best friend
Takamaru - Rescue charge
Emilio - Rescue sister
Karel - Prevent mentor from doing more harm

And then people like Rana and Reya will want to help because they're good people like that, even if they aren't particularly close to Luci or Vincent.

Nodding in agreement, you help your grandmother into what looks like the comfortable chair in the room while the others find their own places to loiter. Karel and Emilio sit together by the door, Marianne takes a seat beside Agnes, and Reya simply stares out the window.

With nothing else to do, you collapse in the remaining chair next to Agnes. Closing your eyes, you just let all of the murderous thoughts in your head run wild... you can feel the bracelet on your wrist churning and stabbing you in the thigh, but you don't even fucking care.

"Reinhold?"

You feel something resting on your hand. Prying your eyes open just enough to get a slight view, you look down and see that it's Agnes's hand.

"The only thing I can think of is to run out there after him and run my sword through that man's eye," you reply. "And then I'd hand it to Luciana and let her have a turn with the other one."

There isn't a doubt in your mind that Luciana wants to kill that traitorous bastard every bit as much as you do.

"I dunno what the King'll even say," you mumble.
"Thierri always goes cold at moments like this," Agnes replies, squeezing your hand. "The stark opposite of his brother... or Gregory, for that matter."

Just as the room goes silent, the door swings open and Thierri comes stomping in.

"Marianne!" he shouts.
"F- father!?" Marianne leaps from her seat, startled by her father's boisterous entrance.
"What happened!?" he shouts as he places his massive hands on his daughter's slender shoulders and leans down so that he's eyelevel with her. "The only thing that Melanie said was that something horrible happened, and-"

His words are stopped by Marianne's sudden bout of sobbing as she wraps her around her father and buries her head in his chest.

"I..." Marianne sobs, "...I'm fine, but..."

Stunned, the King looks down at his daughter for a moment before hugging her right back.

"Karel! Reinhold!" Adrien calls out as he, Arnaud and Sir Gregory enter the room. "You're not hurt either, are you!?"
"No..." Karel shakes her head slowly.

"Gregory!" Agnes shouts just as he's in the midst of opening the window.
"Don't try and stop me, Agnes," Sir Gregory replies. "Luciana is my sister's first child. I was there the day she was born and I held her even before her own father did. I... I can't. I just fucking can't."

It sounds like he's on the verge of tears.

"If you go in without a plan, you'll just get her or yourself killed," you say, finally getting up from your chair.

You then turn to the King.

"And once you do form a plan, I'm coming along too."

"No," you shake your head. "He said that the collar he used on Sir Vincent was originally meant for Luciana, but that's about it."
"Okay," he nods. "And you're sure that he's an Earth-type Contractor?"
"That's the only way I can imagine he was able to do what he did," Marianne replies as she dries the tears from her eyes with her sleeve.
"So that's all we know..."

Thierri walks over to Melanie, who's doing her best not to start sobbing herself.

"Melanie, go find Nicolette and tell her that to put the Guard on full alert.

"Yeah," he nods. "So he's on foot... maybe underfoot. He'll see us if we try and search for him by air, and we don't have any idea of where to even start searching," he sighs.
"Most Contractors can sense stuff with their element, right?" Adrien asks, turning to Arnaud. "Like how you can sense... whatever it is?"
"Yes," Arnaud nods.
"He has some kind of earthquake sense," Karel mumbles. "And he said that his range was a mile. Might be lying again, though..."
"Maybe he can sense things on the ground?" Emilio asks. "Or footsteps, or..."

Niklaus predates the quest, he was initially a magical researcher who gave another character a lance with the same crystal parasite things as Reinhold's sword. I decided to put him and the crystal parasite itself into the quest as something of a precursor, depending on if you guys wanted to go along with it or not.

Initial form was the bracelet, phase two is the sword. The final objective is to recreate "Gran," which I've mentioned before.

All the background mechanics of this were decided years before I even had the seed idea that eventually became Princess Guard.

"Fuck!" Gregory punches the wall. "So what, we're supposed to tracking hounds!? He'll be in Ancellotta or wherever by the time we find him if we do that!"

You could have had it reforged normal-style and maybe had it enchanted in some way or stuck with Agnes's sword forever or maybe found a new sword entirely to use.

He then turns to you.

"It looks like I'm going to have to take care of this shit before we get overrun," Sir Gregory says, "so I'm going to have to leave this up to you. Bring my niece back, you got it? I don't give a fuck how or who you have to kill or how many-"
"I got it," you reply, the look in your eyes a reflection of his own.
"Good."

Right after Sir Gregory races out of the room, Thierri follows after him.

"Arnaud, you and Raoul are in charge of this now," he says. "Do whatever you have to in order to rescue Luciana, okay?"
"Yes, Your Majesty," Arnaud replies.
>>
>>38167840
That's why I dismissed it. Since I don't think the collars remove your free will I didn't think you could construct a willing fighting force stuck in them, and I wasn't sure of how enclosed in something of the metal you had to be to become movable.

Presumably the wooden things are banded with the metal to make them shift the occupants.

>Also, have you got any solid rules on the collars like radius limits etc. for what they contain? This kind of stunt is pretty interesting.
In order to do this, they needed to get an object that they owned (the collars around the two salamanders' necks) into the area that they wanted and then they'd be free to switch it with another object "in hand." This brings the "property," namely the salamander's corpse, back to them while switching its place with the object that was filled with soldiers.

You don't need to own the thing that you're switching out, only the thing you're switching in. and the entire object is transported, including its contents whatever they may be. like people

To take it one step further, the folks behind this plot had prepared several of these soldier-filled constructs, and would swap a full one out for an empty one on a timed basis. This is what they're doing right now.

>continued...
>>
>>38168053

Doing something as simple as breaking the object enough for it to no longer be the proper shape to be swapped out is enough to render the effect useless.

>>38168111
>so the transports do have the metal on then, to allow the repeated swaps since at least one of the pair needs to be magically "in hand"?
The metal is only needed to directly transport living things. Objects themselves don't need it even if they contain living things to be transported.

So smash a construct and they won't be capable of substituting it anymore?
>>
>>38168179
Isn't the idea that Thierri and Celestino would eventually be doing that?
>>
>>38168179
>lol you think reinhold's able to do that on his own
Anythings possible if you kill enough people

We might just have to kill thousands

Evidently.

Even if Greg doesn't go in full area-of-effect guns blazing and do it by accident, he's going to go to town on the constructs themselves the first time he sees one get substituted. If he was somehow suddenly rendered too retarded to have figured out what was going on and take action to stop it, after the first substitution the new construct is going to be packed with enemy troops making it the best target to get most of them at once by blowing it the fuck up.

So yeah, Greg shouldn't be tied up for very long at least, which is good because he's a fun character in combat.

We should just set the damn place the containers are at on fire.

when everything around them and they themselves are on fire, its abit hard to fight.

Anything along those lines would work to end the sending of new troops, either by making the LZ completely untenable so everyone is basically dead on arrival or by wrecking a container such that it can't be swapped out.

If bombs were a thing, I'd suggest throwing one in to an empty container to give them a nice surprise when they swap them out back at home.

Well is Delayed Blast Fireball a spell in this setting, and does Niklaus know it?

If not he should invent it.

If he doesn't know it the Ara Ara might. Even he admits she's better than he is.
