You are Reinhold Eschenwald, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

At long last, you found out who was behind everything that's been going on for the past two months.

You've never wanted so badly to kill someone before.

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a fearsome DIRE WOLF!
>Much larger than their the other types of wolf, the Dire Wolf's size also means that they are also that much more dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her dear friend!
>But while dire wolves are massive, they still don't -quite- stand on the same level as people.

"LUCIANA!!" Elena shrieks at the top of her lungs. "Reinhold, you have to go save her!"

But her voice sounds like it;'s a million miles away. While she cries and wails, you the only thing going through your mind is how much you want to kill that man.

"Reinhold!"

You feel a pressure on your leg, but pay it no mind.

"No... no no no no no no no..." Elena sobs. "S... streaking through the sky, a trail of stardust-"

Your arm darts out and grabs Elena by the shoulder.

"No," you say, your eyes fixed in the direction that Leopold ran off while carrying Luciana. "Don't."
"Why not!?" Elena screams. "He took Luciana! Don't you love her!?"
"Elena," Reya takes her hand.
"It's too risky," you say in a near-whisper. "If what he said is true then we'll risk everyone in the carriages dying if you or I try to chase after him."
"...his heart beat steady," Inaba says to her. "Not lying."

Yes... while there's nothing in the entire world you'd love to do right now than chase after Leopold and rip out his entrails through his mouth, you can't risk the lives of Citrine or Marianne or the rest of your family or anyone else in order to do so.

So you stand there and wait.

Takamaru's on the ground clutching his bleeding torso and Valerie and Racquel are weeping for their father and you can hear Karel doing the same... but still, you wait until it's safe to move.

After taking a deep breath to calm your nerves (it doesn't work), you turn to Reya.

"Go check on Takamaru," you say to your fellow bodyguard. "I'm going to try and get the carriages free."
"Y- yeah," Reya nods nervously. "Got it."

Patting Elena on the had as he passes her, Reya hurries to the fallen swordsman's side. And as for you...

"Don't worry," you say to Elena. "I'll get Luciana back from that bastard once you're all safe."

Still sobbing, Elena nods weakly while Inaba tries her best to console her friend.

Though the driver of your carriage has done well to keep the behemoth that pulls it calm, the carriage itself is being held in place by an array of earthen spikes that pierce into it. Coldly, you stare them down as if they were capable of looking back at you...

...and then you draw back your sword.

Thee crumble before your rage, falling apart once you sever their connection to the ground itself. So that Marianne and Emilio can get out, you attack the ones by the door first, then move on to the others...

"Reinhold?" Marianne calls out from inside the carriage.
"That was me," you reply. "It's safe to come out."

Just as you raise your sword-arm in the air to hack away at more of the spikes, the door to the carriage practically explodes from its hinges. He wants to finally go adventuring with his old friend Therri again? Fuck if I know man, empires generally seem like an administrative nightmare that would do better by being governed at a regional level. But rulers like ruling bigger territories and having more subjects, so we have bloody (and occasionally bloodless) geographic mergers. And stuff.
>>
>>38146142
Because Granache is vulnerable from Ancellotta through Marconetti, Lucianno's kingdom is not as well unified as Granache. Lucianno doesn't have awesome people running the country and knows he has traitors high up in his ranks.

He want to unify the kingdoms to put Granache's people in charge and unify the loyal subjects he has in Marconetti to be even closer with Granache to make it harder for traitors to infiltrate.

Nodding in acknowledgement, Marianne gracefully jumps from the carriage onto the ground. Emilio follows after her, though he's much more cautious about it.

"He took her," you say through clenched teeth.
"So he-" Marianne reels back like she was just slapped in the face for a few seconds before turning back towards the carriage.
"...so I heard it right after all..." Emilio mumbles.

While Emilio tries to shield his crying face from view, you decide to leave him be and instead ask for Marianne's help.

"That BASTARD!"

In a normal situation, you'd have been surprised by Marianne's outburst as she swings her halberd as hard as she can onto the spikes that surround the carriage, but you'd honestly much rather join her instead. In between each profane outburst, she crashes the polearm into the ground, sending rubble flying into the air.

"...Marianne," you place your hand in the Princess's shoulder before she can draw back for another swing. "Takamaru's hurt and I need your help."

Marianne looks back at you with eyes that are already red from crying for a splitsecond before clutching her face with her free hand and nodding to you.

"Yes... sorry," Marianne says. "I'll see to him right away."

Since the Princess's tantrum served to destroy the rest of the spikes around your carriage, you hurry off towards the one that the others rode in on to do the same for them. But before you do, you turn back to the still-stunned Emilio.

"Emilio," you call out. "Karel hasn't moved from the spot, could you check on her while I do this?"
"...yeah, okay," he nods.

You make quick work of the remaining spikes that surround Citrine's carriage, making sure that there aren't any more piercing it before you make your way to the door and open it.

"Citrine!" you call out as you stick your head through the door. "Are you alright?"

Your question is instantly answered when the scene that your eyes are seeing actually registers in your brain. Though they're all huddled in the middle seats of the carriage, all four of them are safe and unhurt. Narius has his pregnant wife in his arms while Carina tries to to the same for Agnes.

"Yes," Citrine replies. "What's going on outside, are we under attack?"

You've never hid anything from Citrine and there's no point in doing so now.

"Leopold Massenet?" Agnes gasps. "Who in the world could have done that to him!?"

"Wha-" Citrine gasps. "So that look in your eyes is..."
"Yeah," you nod solemnly.
"Well don't think that you need to keep watch over us, go and save her!" Citrine says, pointing out the door.

I'm guessing Arch will be able to do at least 4 threads a week, so in a two month period that'd be roughly another 34 threads. 34 threads ago we were starting the Karel lake-interlude so we've done a lot of stuff since then, even if it was at a snails pace. I think Arch could feasibly end the quest within a 60 day timeframe.

"...no," you shake your head. "I want to, but I need to get you guys to safety first."
"Oh yeah," Marius nods. "You do have Princess Marianne to worry about."
"And the rest of you," you reply.
"A bad man took Luciana?" Carina asks. "He didn't take Racquel and Valerie, did he?"

You glance back outside and see that the two girls are still crying...

"No," you say, "but he did take their daddy."
"But you said that their daddy was even stronger than you!" Carina says, clinging to Agnes. "If he took him then how are you gonna-"
"I'll be fine," you say with a weak smile. "Don't worry about me."

After taking a few moments to make sure that none of those spikes broke off inside the cabin, you head back outside.

Takamaru is lying on the ground, his white robes stained with blood while Marianne crouches over his wound.

"Is he going to be alright?" you ask.
"For now, at least," Marianne replies. "I cast the strongest healing spell I know on him and closed up the wound, but I don't have enough medical training to be able to tell if I actually healed him a hundred percent properly."
"He should be until we get back to the castle, at least," Reya says.
"Anyways, I just finished here so if you could...?" she turns to the half-dragon.
"Got it."

With little effort, Reya lifts up the unconscious swordsman and carries him back to the carriage that they were riding.

"Reinhold..." Marianne grips your sleeve, but pulls her hand right back and sticks a finger in her mouth. "What in the...?"
"Shit," you say, rolling up your sleeve to reveal a piece of metal clinging tightly to your wrist, covered in undulating spikes.

This thing reacts to your mood so of course it would be going nuts at a time like this.

Would this sequence or bad guy change depending on what route we were on?
>>
We need a plan.

We also need intel. The guy was quite powerful, we'll need to find what else we might be facing and be prepared accordingly.
We'll need disguise for ourselves and anyone who would come with us.
We'll need to go through Perricone, since anything coming from Marconetti will be suspect by default after the closed border thing.
We could use Millien's help, if we can find out with reasonable certainty that he's not in league with Them.
And we should probably make it a point to free Vincent first for firepower.

I wonder if The Boss in the whorehouse doesn't know someone who might help us in this quest...
>>
>>38147829
How desperate is Ancelotta? Because hostage taking is one of the worst methods of pressure possible considering it makes your opponent despise you and if you actually do anything to the hostage they lose all reasons to restrain themselves. There's a reason it's generally only done either as a "fuck you" gesture from short-termist groups planning on killing anyway, or as an exchange token for cash or an escape route with the intention of disappearing to escape the other partie's wrath, which a country can't really do.
>>
>>38147872
>Would this sequence or bad guy change depending on what route we were on?

Can't think of any bad guys for the other routes

>>Is this the sole Endgame you have planned out?

This feels like kind of a shame (not about Leo being the big bad guy no matter what, but rather having one designated end-game scenario Mad Libs with spaces filled in depending on the path you took to get there), since even though it's reasonable enough for the story as a whole, aside from Marianne/Luciana, I can't see the whole kidnap scenario feeling like a satisfying climax to any other given route. Feels a bit like a throw-away "Sorry, this was one of the plot-agnostic romances. Better luck next time!"

Amusingly, the only scenario that seems like it would be appreciably different off the top of my head would be the one with the defector Devil Child, and that's the one that's least likely to actually be a thing.

Not to mention I feel like Karel's would be better served without a kidnapping at all so as to put the main focus on the whole Leopold-is-evil, now-the-student-must-overcome-the-master thing.
>>
>>38154171
Emilio kidnap works for Karel because Emilio's still her charge and best friend even if Rein is the love-interest in that scenario.
Would also be cool to see more of Raoul in that scenario, having her actual father helping her take down the guy who's presumably been something of a father figure throughout her life.

>>38154171
>This feels like kind of a shame (not about Leo being the big bad guy no matter what, but rather having one designated end-game scenario Mad Libs with spaces filled in depending on the path you took to get there), since even though it's reasonable enough for the story as a whole, aside from Marianne/Luciana, I can't see the whole kidnap scenario feeling like a satisfying climax to any other given route. Feels a bit like a throw-away "Sorry, this was one of the plot-agnostic romances. Better luck next time!"

I said that Leopold would always be the Big Bad of sorts, not that this exact scenario would have played out as it did here.

Though I do understand that sentiment, which is why I set up False Dendrite in the way that I did.

Hey Arch on a scale from 1 to 10 1 being mook 10 being legendary hero of epicness, where does Reinhold fall atm?
>>
>>38156535
That type of thing is a sliding scale, but I'd put Reinhold somewhere around the middle.
>>
>>38156632
About what I expected to hear.

Is Vincent strong enough to break those collars without magic?
>>
Just got caught up on the quest.

Archelon, I was planning on dropping by the next live one and thanking you for all the good times and cute imoutos doing cute things.
>>
>>38157675
He's running tonight unless RL intervenes.
>>
>>38149394
Reinhold can't control the bracelet like that, at least not without physical contact.
>>
>>38157675
Should be tonight. Hope the archive binging was fun.

Remember to polite sage on dead threads.
>>
>>38156697
I doubt anyone could break a slave collar with pure physical strength.
>>
Shit. if Arch is going to start running soon, I might actually be able to cath the whole thread by staying up real late, instead of just going to bed right now.
>>
>>38158031
If anyone could do it he could though.

>>38158071
Arch starts around 10-12 est.
>>
>>38158210
>Arch starts around 10-12 est.
What's that in CET?
>>
>>38158258
4-6 am so your better off sleeping and waking up to it mid thread.
>>
>>38158258
4-6 in the morning I believe
I'm also in CET and just got through the archives, this could be my first live thread
>>
>>38158383
Mandatory who is best girl?
>>
>>38158379
>>38158383
Well, fuck. I'm not liable to wake before 10. I guess I can hope you guys don't go for the retarded options, but the last thread crushed all hopes of that.

>>38158383
Welcome. Hope you enjoy your stay.
>>
>>38158383
i'm in pst and can only catch at most until midnight on most nights, 3am arch time
>>
>>38158438
Archelon is my favourite girl
Every girl is best girl, but i like Luci the most

>>38158443
Thanks! I'll try my best not to be retarded
>>
>>38158506
> but i like Luci the most
Fuck yeah! Been supporting her since right after she left Granache for the first time.
>>
>>38158506
You have passed the test.

Carry on.
>>
Doesn't our sword feed off of our magic? Could we use it as an antimagic user weapon. Or have it "eat" our opponent?

Reinhold of the Demon Sword when?
>>
>>38158607
Thing is too much magic overloads it like our bracelet.
>>
>>38158607
The weapon could technically eat magic from anyone touching it, so it could theoretically work like Sierra (from Hellborn Quest)'s claws.
>>
>>38158607
It doesn't do that. It "eats" magic in that it piggybacks off our natural magic output to live, it doesn't devour it in a weaponizable way.
>>
I hope we get a chance to pet our sword and admit our love some time soon. Before it's too late.
>>
>>38158791
I wouldn't go so far, but we should at least ask it if it has a name it would prefer
>>
>>38158914
But anon, we practically sleep with our sword every day, and it's the second oldest companion of our life.
>>
>>38158955
Third. After Spinelle and Citrine.
>>
>>38158982
Not sure I'd rate Spinelle as a companion, but point.
>>
>>38158438
Another CET here.

Rana. Fite me, faggots.
However I believe Sylvie would be best match for Reinhold personalitywise. But rules of chinese cartoons dictate that first girl should win anyway.
>>
>>38158714
A limit which I'm very certain is going to change, or perhaps already has, given that it has already developed sapience, which is clearly beyond the theoretical limits it has.
>>
>>38159164
That's just Archelon teasing us before he takes our swordwaifu tragically away, just like he did with Luciana.

Tina must suffer great pain and exhaustion every time she communicates. She won't last much longer. Her last words will be... Behind you... danger...
>>
>>38159113
>But rules of chinese cartoons dictate that first girl should win anyway.
First girl lost tho
>>
>>38159242
Hell, the first several lost.
>>
>>38159164
Doesn't that imply that the bracelet is reasonably close to ascending?

Inaba didn't think like a person until she got extremely close.
>>
>>38159277
The order was something like:

1: Marianne
2: Nicolette
3. Sylvie
4. Melanie
5. Luciana
6. Rana
7. Karel
>>
>>38159336
I believe Spinelle was first girl, I'm pretty glad she didn't win
>>
>>38159307
IIRC archelon has stated that only organics can ascend, though I might be wrong.

I'm also still curious how the process for sparking Tina's conscience compares to that of marionettes, and how many similarities there may or may not be.
>>
>>38159363
>I'm pretty glad she didn't win
Nice shit taste
>>
>>38159242
>>38159277

In quest, yes. But in a story she would likely not.
Besides, Sylvie was liable to win if not for retarded anon-politics and intense anti-sylvie campaign.
Quest became much easier to read after the wars ended. Although still not as nice as it was before they started.
>>
>>38159377
I think it's all up in the air regarding the bracelet, since we haven't been told about any precedent for it, and can only go on vague theories based on the lore we do have.
>>
>>38159414
>Although still not as nice as it was before they started.
Part of that is probably the setting losing a lot of mystery and mystique as it went on. The beginning was very fish-out-of-water for the reinmaster, and since has become slice-of-life and follow-karel-around'ing.

>>38159425
It still breaks my heart that we'll never dissemble and rebuild a marionette with Niklaus, or discuss crystalline lifeforms with him, romances be damned.
>>
>>38159492
*dissassemble
>>
>>38159492
>crazy wizard's assistant quest
>tfw this will never be an option in the VN
>>
>>38158031
Given Sylvie could punch through a thick wooden door, something that inherently handles concussive force well, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Vincent could destroy the hinge on the collar given that he's much stronger still. Even if he can't do it directly, he wouldn't need much of a lever to be able to exert a force that would wreck a metal hinge on a collar small enough to fit on a persons neck.

He is really ridiculously physically strong, to biological impossibility level in reality.
>>
>>38159907
innate magical reinforcement so inherent in him that he surpasses biological limits unknowingly?
>>
>>38159673
Maybe on the single route, Anon.
>>
>>38159948
Given that he routinely punched bears to death long before learning any magic, I'd say he was at biological impossibility from the get-go.
>>
>>38159985
I wish.
>>
>>38158438

Citrine.

She is the emotional Gibraltar that let Reinhold survive and remain a human being through his life.

Best girl does not always have to be a romance option.
>>
>>38160159
If you give me that answer, though, I can't bitch about how your tastes are objectively wrong. That's no fun.
