That seems to be a commonality among all your loved ones, that hidden layer of self-destructive tendency. Yui-chan seems to be mostly cured of hers, at least, which is a step in the right direction. Kiki-hime's ignorance is being slowly and firmly trained out of her. Akari's....you're not sure if Akari shares that peculiarity, unless you count her getting violent towards high ranking dragonettes. You don't, really, because you felt much the same both times. Er Yin-sensei seems pretty stable, aside from her religious experiences and beliefs, which are a little out there even for you, considering she practically worships you as a deity.

You're pretty sure you're no deity, demigoddess-ness aside.

The third question, is why the freakin' heaven you're still awake after all the fuckin' crap you kamidamned dealt with today! At first you thought it was because of Er Yin's help to balance out your Chi nature, but you've been having this problem before that happened. Ever since you started on this mission, as a matter of fact, when you brought Yui to the safehouse and Akari woke up after you started looking over the paperwork. That was the first time.

In fact, outside of when you're suffering deadly injuries, you barely sleep at all anymore. There was a space of about three days where you DIDN'T sleep at all. Not for lack of trying either. You simply didn't feel the need for it. Unlike the sleep deprivation training you went through as a girl, you didn't go catshit insane either....but you slept for about ten hours back then and the you were fine, unlike everyone else on that training. Hallucinating oni-children, kami what a mess that was.

And you're still awake.

You've been awake for the past two hours, while everyone else has been sleeping soundly. Currently, Akari is sleeping on your left side, while Kiki-hime is on your right. Yui-chan has exchanged Akari for a compact model, namely Kiku-chan, who is the little spoon to Yui's not-quite-so-big spoon. Kiku-chan has barely stirred since she was put in bed, and doesn't seem to be bothered by anything, which is a relief.

You can feel their presences in your mind, their sleeping thoughts a sort of beacon you can sense. Oddly, even though Er Yin-sensei is sealed into a coma, you can feel her sleeping as well, right through the seal. You're even aware of the seal, which is a very handy thing to be aware of. Even though the wards that Kiku, Er Yin and Jinyuu-onee-sama created for your home are still up, your sense of Water lets you know everyone else – including Inau-san – is at least in bed, if not asleep.

Now if only you were asleep to take advantage of everyone else being asleep, it would be just fine.

As usual, you can't manage to concentrate long enough to make a decisions about what you should really do while coping with the lack of sleep. Despite your injuries, and they were pretty bad, you're still unable to sleep, and being safe and warm with your loved ones isn't helping.

Regardless of what you actually decide to do, the first step is not being in bed, because all you are doing is worrying about waking the others up. You won't, of course – you can and will slip out of bed without disturbing the soft futon any more than you need to. You can, and have walked through rows of sleeping oni-children and dragonettes before. Slipping out of the covers is as easy as....

Akari looks at you, instantly awake and alert, her carnelian eyes gleaming in the dark. Her sleeping presence in your mind vanishes an instant LATER, which is a little freaky. You narrow your eyes at her, and she slides out of bed with the same caution and skill as you would use, moving to kneel at the side of the bed and waiting for you. Sighing noiselessly you slip out the same side of the bed, and join her and she gestures to two girls sleeping at the foot of the bed. You agree, and help her move them with tail and arms – carefully not using your hands, as promised – to place the sleeping oni-chick and the bundle of warmth she's cuddling to where you and Akari had been sleeping.

Kiku-chan shifts a little, and Kiki-hime rolls over, laying her arm over both the sleeping dragonette and the sleeping oni-chick protectively, and all three settle into a more relaxed sleep. You reach for Kiki-hime's hair, and then look at the glove you are wearing. With a sigh you pull back and walk with Akari-niji-chan to the door. She opens the door in utter silence, and you follow.

Closing the door, she remains there a second, her palm pressed to the door. She glances around the house slowly, looking through the stone walls. “Everyone else is still asleep or under their seals,” the Stone dragonette murmurs quietly to you as she walks with you into the living room, and from there, the kitchen. “I felt you move, is all. You are having more trouble sleeping, aniki?”

She smiles, shaking her head as she prepares two cups for tea. “I always feel movement through what I am touching. I can ignore it or not as I wish.” Stone dragonette power, then. That explains a lot – she probably could feel your heartbeat through the floor if she were so inclined. You always wondered what it was that made Akari able to wake instantly just by you thinking of it. It wasn't the thought – it was your movements to prepare to wake her.

Oba-san is going to be so pissed you stole her.

“Well, as I said, you needn't worry, I'll come back to bed before anyone wakes. You need to sleep. I don't seem to need it as much any longer. At least, I don't think I was this bad before, was I?” It's not a question you would have thought of before, but considering how insane the past few weeks have been – has it even been three weeks?

Your question seems to bother Akari somewhat. “You have always been strangely excitable, aniki. You have never been good at waiting with no reason to wait.” She is very much aware that if you need to wait, you will be as still and silent as death as long as you need to. And promptly go berserk later, but you can manage. “I am beginning to wonder if Oba-san has been using drugs to keep you sedate all this time.”

You study the hot tea brewing in the cup, holding it on the tips of your nails. Or talons. Whatever they are right now. The gloves support it well enough, and you watch the water darkening slowly as you gather your thoughts. It has been too long since you had the chance to talk with Akari alone, and so much has happened. “As troubled as things have been, we are alone for the first time in too long....I want to know what you think of this situation.” She glances sidelong at you, and you glance back in the same manner. “Yes, honestly, don't be ridiculous.”

“Well, it is a ridiculous situation, aniki,” she replies. “But there is no way out of it save the one you are making. I could not have managed this level of....of cartoon-like madness with the meager skills I have. You are trapped in situations of other's making, and we are making our way as best as can be imagined.” Akari takes the small chain that the tisane dangles from and lets the liquid within pour into her cup. She steeps the tisane several more times, and sets it back in the cup. “I cannot even imagine the things you have suffered through so far, aniki, and am glad they are happening to you, rather than myself.”

You snort laughter, and shake your head. “You're understanding and concern are so heartwarming, Akari-chan....” She giggles, that soft, melodious noise you only heard recently. “What would you do next then?”

That makes Akari become very serious indeed. “The most pressing problem are the exorcists, now. Too much that we are depending upon is tied in with them, and the nekomata is a very dangerous creature to cross. I would rather have dealt with the repercussions of killing Kuroukami's daughter, than to upset the nekomata. We need their help to deal with the servants that Toshio Ryoga has at his command and has set against us.”

You sigh. “I was hoping to put them off a little longer, but if they're hunting the nogitsune-children, we have to stop them. I'd say it isn't our problem, but I suspect....” You have to let that trail off. Amaterasu-Omikami has told you why she needs you, in no uncertain terms. And the idea of an exorcism being performed on any spirit-child is horrifying in the extreme. You've seen the results once, and it was horrific.

“You haven't any regrets, have you?” You phrase the question casually, but you mean it in a very real manner.

She turns her attention fully upon you, and smiles, a strange little smile. “Aniki, are you asking if I am sorry that it was Kiki-hime and not me who is your first wife?”

Her question is not more teasing than you meant yours to be, and it puts the other questions you have out of mind for the moment.

“No – wait, what the heaven are you saying?” The question catches you off guard, even beyond your normal capacity for cleverness. It takes a moment to parse what she's implying, and a little longer than that to consider what she's suggesting outside of that. Setting your tea aside you turn in your seat and look directly at the girl coiled on the couch next to you. She is looking at her tea, of course, and smiling faintly, but then again, she hides her true feelings behind those simple, stoic looks all the time.

Leaning against the back of the couch, you mirror her pose, tucking your legs under you on the couch, you pout at her, your tail sliding up behind her to caress her back through the silk of her robe. “That isn't entirely fair, niji-chan....you shouldn't play with my heart like that at all.” To say that she doesn't look contrite would be understating the matter. She tilts her head, her tail sliding along yours, following it to your back, and slipping her tail under your own robe to gently trace the line of your spine with the hard jade spikes. You lower your eyes, and let the blush come to your cheeks naturally. “Please, Akari-chan, don't tease....”

Akari sets her tea on the table and leans forward on her hands and looks at you seriously, speaking softly. “Ryukusa....I could never be your wife.” You blink, taken aback by her forwardness. She looks at you, her eyes sparkling with amusement. “I will always be your niji-chan, your kohai. I would never be your equal, in any of a dozen ways. It simply isn't in me.” You frown at her and start to say something but she shakes her head. “Even though she is weaker, untrained, unfamiliar with her powers, your princess is a ~princess~, and she will not let you become overwhelming or too full of yourself.”

Akari smiles and lowers her head, eyes closing. “She, in many ways, is the foil to your perfection.” Your tail slides down her back as you stare at her. Lifting her face to look at you once more, she speaks very softly. “If there is a thing that I regret, it is only that we did not have the opportunity to learn with each other what we learned with others.”

With a blink, you realize she means every word of what she says.

You lower your head, thinking on what she's saying. What you think she's saying. She may not have the subtle nuances of Water dragonette diplomacy, but she's more thoughtful than people expect her to be. You understand what she means despite the way she says it.

“Akari-chan....I taught Kiki-hime that there are consequences for teasing Water dragonettes.” You slowly peel off the gloves, and rather than stopping you, she watches you do it. The wrappings come off next, and you flex your bared hands slowly. “You're wrong though. I'm not perfect. I am very far from perfect.” You slowly peel the wrappings from your right hand, taking care not to cut deeply with your talons. “But for you, I might try to be that perfect. You are....you always have been, very close to me, and not simply because Oba-san made it so. You were always my friend, right from the very start, and you will always be the one to back my plays, my desires, and support them all.”

You finish peeling off the bandages, and you flex your hand slowly. What seemed to be the case the last time you looked at your hands is truly the case: your flesh isn't healing. Your bones are growing. Rather, the gem-like substance of your bones is becoming your flesh. You don't have fingers any longer, as much as they are truly becoming talons of petrified flesh. You have your doubts that this was intended by Yui, but your physiology isn't entirely dragonette any longer. Working on your left hand, you speak softly.

They're not complete, not yet, but it won't be long before your palms are finished healing. “when you and Yui-chan showed me, taught me, I learned a lot more than perhaps you meant to teach. Akari watches, seeming fascinated by the revelation of your hands; she seems to see it as well, the way they're healing. Unnatural, if you were a dragonette. For a demigoddess? Who knows. You certainly don't. “What I learned from Kiki-hime, is that it doesn't really matter whether you are kohai, senpai, seme, uke, top, bottom, switch....all that matters....” You slowly remove the stitches in your right arm, slitting them apart. She reaches over, and helps you slip the tiny bits of string from your flesh. You don't speak as you finish, the red line of the completely closed scar shiny and slick.

Sitting up, you turn to face her, and she watches you, eyes wide, soft lips parted. “All that matters is that it is you and I, at this very moment, here.” Her eyes are shimmering and she smiles and you place your hands upon her thighs, and kiss her, slowly, and deeply, tails entwined.

It is a long, long time before you break the kiss, and you revel in every heartbeat, every breath of that moment. Her hands cover yours – they ache, but there is no pain, not now. When you finally break the kiss, she is breathless, and you're not much better off. She lowers her forehead to yours and whispers very softly to you.

“Aniki....Water will help you feel better, won't it?”

You laugh softly and keep her quiet with another long, slow kiss, your taloned fingers moving up from her thighs to part her silk robes. You bare her body and slowly caress her with the strange, warm claws of sapphire and ruby tracing the lines of her body with a touch as gentle as possible. She shudders and her tail winds around yours more tightly, before she breaks the kiss breathlessly.

“I can't kiss....that long, Ryukusa....” she complains with a smile.

“And yet you want to get in a tub full of water with me, as well? Isn't that a little like playing with fire?” Her hands come up, cupping your face, your cheeks.

“I'm not your beautiful little miko, aniki,” she reminds you softly.

“And I'm not worried about what is good for me right now, niji,” you reply softly, slowly pushing Akari back against the arm of the couch, your powerful, deadly hands gentle and careful, as if she were a fragile thing. Breathing heavily, she falls back, and you slowly straddle her, heedless of your own robe coming loose.

“Aniki....” You place a finger over her lips and kiss her again, feeling the sleeping loved ones around you, hearing none stirring in the other rooms. Skin to skin, you kiss, and she wraps her arms about your neck, taking the moment you claimed was yours and hers alone.

You and Akari are curled up on the couch, her in you lap, her head against your shoulder, your arms about her waist. You're both wrapped in silk once more, and the scents of your love and warmth fill the room. It is an easy enough thing to clear out, if you wish, but at the moment, you're spent and so is she.

Akari murmurs softly, “I am worried about the demigoddess, because you're going to be like her some day.” You run your finger though her short hair, and shift slightly to pull your breast into a more comfortable position. The only problem with a lover lying on you, really. “It is....a strange, frightening idea, aniki, that you could be so....”

“Pretty? Cute? Charismatic?”

She giggles softly and shakes her head ever so slightly. “So pure.”

You almost choke.

“Akari, I realize you may not have met as many as I have, but do they seem that way to you really?” She only met Kushinada briefly, and at that time throw a house on her, but your niji-chan is perceptive, and not as slow or dull as she likes to seem to others.

The Stone dragonette slowly rolls over, careful to sit up so she doesn't do unpleasant things to your breasts as she turns, and lays atop you again, resting her head along your shoulder and looking at the couch. You stroke her soft hair, and pet her tail with your own as she answers. “They are very pure. They are....they are exactly what they are, and nothing changes that. You change, so much, from day to day. Even your body is changing. You're like a cauldron of the elements, seething, boiling away, until all that is left is what you become, instead of what you are.”

You kiss her atop her head and run your talons over her horn gently, making the stone sing and she sighs as if it is a soothing noise. “What a ridiculous idea, me being 'pure.' You're more likely to end up with a whirlwind of hyperactive O.C.D laden nerves chasing everyone's skirts.”

“Is it so strange, aniki?” she asks seriously. “You were always kind, always protective of me. You practiced and fought, but you never bullied or were cruel to anyone, even when they deserved it. You were pure, even in your rebellion, even when you were causing trouble for others.” You don't have much of an answer for that, not right away. “If you asked Chisato, I would bet she would say you were kind and pure. I would bet even the demigoddesses you fought, your cousin, I think they would say you were pure. Kind and hard and pure.”

She's starting to scare you a little with that kind of thinking.

With a soft sigh, you whisper to her, reassuring her. “Well, if I am going to be pure, then I will be purely Ryukusa, and you will make sure of that for me.” You trust Akari with more than your life; you trust her with the lives of those you love, and with your back. You fear nothing because she is there to make sure that you are all right. She is your rock solid niji-chan, and not in the punny way either.

Akari tilts her head up to look at you, her soft, warm carnelian eyes unblinking, fearless, trusting. Loving. “I promise, Ryukusa.” The sincerity with which she says it silences any quip, and joke you might make of it.

“Thank you, my Akari.”

Demigod metabolisms are incredibly efficient, even beyond dragonette metabolism. Ryukusa is unlucky in that she's never learned how to cope with her natural metabolism and how it affects her. Her 'hyperactivity' is a symptom of her overpowering drive to Do Things.
