“I don’t know” you admit “short of killing them, I don’t think many of the Reunited will stop, but you’ve always said you’ve been working with backers who want to protect the Hive, that’s why you needed to know what Kaelyn knows. “This is...this is...” says the sergeant as you grow a small apple tree next to her and pluck one of the fruits from it, handing it to her.

Sara takes the apple in a shaky hand, examines it for several minutes and then bites it very carefully, as if expecting it to shatter, or taste foul of something.

If you use a low-ammo weapon (i.e. plasma pistol) with an attack that uses a lot of shots (Rapid Shot) may have character reload in combat. Hasn't really come up so far.

With that done, you Tenley and Gambon head back to the Waystation. You have a quiet night in with your friends planned, but before that, you want to talk to the King of Hell about something he said to you earlier today.

Once you’ve stored the weapons in your Realm, you sit down on the sand, and think really hard, about Hell...

You find yourself in vast halls of white marble, all around you figures in long robes of all colours are scurrying to and fro. Some are smaller than you, others easily top 6 metres in height.

None of them look human, oh some are humanoid shape with long horns, red skin and sharp teeth and claws, others look like nightmarish spiders or lizard people or hulking rock-folk

You’re standing at an intersection and they rush around, some bumping into you as they pass, glaring at you as if it was your fault they walked into you.

“Um excuse me” you ask one “can you tell me” he rushes off before you can finish.

“I want to know where I can” you ask another, who simply ignores you. Each time you try to talk to the robed figures, they simply ignore you, hurrying around. All are carrying stacks of paper files.

Eventually a birdlike woman wearing thick glasses marches up to you “Shee Hyul?” she says

“Yes I-” you start

“You’re late for your appointment with His Majesty” she says severely “come this way, quickly now” Well at least she’s speaking to you, you head after her “can you tell me where I am?” you ask

“You’re in the Hell of Bureaucracy” she replies “Third Layer Fourth Circle Ninth Elliptical 133rd floor West Sector Nine in Corridor 6J.” How...precise

“And you’re 37 seconds late already” she says severely “What must the King think of you!”

“I’m sorry” you say “I only thought to talk to him a few minutes ago, I-”

“Sorry, sorry!” cackles the bird woman “That won’t put us back on schedule will it, no, it’ll be error codes all around, and simply because the General Order Officer couldn’t stick to his assigned task, oh here we go again...” she rambles on in terms that make no sense, until you’re shown into a vast office.

A desk the side of a sports field has small mountains of paperwork upon it. All around the room there are complex multi-tiered filing cabinets and strange machinery.

In the middle of the desk lies a vast bloated demon, or rather, given the streams of blood flowing from it, soaking into the paper work, the corpse of a demon. At the desk sits the King of Hell, but far larger, far more *real* then you’ve seen him before. He towers over you, a giant of red and brass, you barely come up to his ankle as he sifts through the papers with a bemused look, ignoring you.

Your guide coughs and says “Your Majesty. Lord of all Hell, Ruler of All He Surveys, The Beast, the Brass King, The Thousand-Tongued-”

“Yes, yes” says the King of Hell, bending over the desk and peering at you both “Thank you, you may go.”

The birdlike woman dithers “But, Sire, there is no form 17GY76B to say that the person or personage of interest has been-”

“I said go” rumbles a voice like a forest fire. The woman flees as the King of Hell bends down, grabs you and then deposits you on the desk. You step away from the spreading pool of blood.

“Thank you for seeing me your majesty” you say “um, is this...Hell?”

“One of them” says the King, sifting through the papers “Where’s the blasted list of bribes? I can see why he rebelled, anyone would go mad with this, but where in my realm is the list? Anyway, yes, what did you want?”

“I wanted to ask about the rules of the contest of the Reunited.”

“You already know them” says the vast form of the King of Hell. This close you can clearly smell brimstone and a strong animal-like musk, most definitely male, overwhelmingly so.

“Ah, I don’t actually” you say “I mean, I know a few, such as no favours given in battles between Reunited, how Gifts are given out, but not the full list.”

“Those are the important ones” says the King of Hell “The rest are...esoteric, such as no destroying your rivals through long-distance magical rituals, line of sight is the maximum, things like that” he continues shuffling paper. You file away that little fact.

“And in particular” you say “What the deal with Lord Reaper was.”

“Hah, his superiors more like” chuckles the King of Hell, his laughter making your bones vibrate.

“Ah yes” you agree “But what was the-”

“The rules were simple” says the King of Hell “The fae nor their forces could focus attention on the Reunited as a group, or individuals, nor upon their followers, save where laws were broken, in which case a proportional response was allowable. In short that the fae had to treat you as ordinary and unremarkable, despite knowing you are not. Now if you broke the laws, they could send the police after you, even the army if you took out swathes of cops, but no surgical strikes, no magical rituals to depower you, just a playing field with a few...hazards as it were.”

“Lord Reaper came after me personally” you point out

“Lord Reaper argued that he went after his daughter” says the King, “That you were simply in the way, a...debateable position, in any case your protection has been reaffirming” he looks a little disappointed “after your deal with the Darkness.”

“Some, though not all of those who work for you” says the King of Hell “Desire, to varying degrees, and for different reasons, to become demons, for immortality, power and so on. They are unlikely to achieve this in their lifetimes with their own talents, but you could do it for them.”

“How?” you ask “and, also, why?”

“The lure of powerful servants not enough for you?” asks the King of Hell with an amused smile.

“I mean, why ask it as a task?” you say “Surely having demonic followers is its own reward.”

“Because it would teach you about yourself” says the King “about how far you would go for your followers, for power, and which boundaries you cannot cross, Jagganatha is not the only one into self-improvement, he just approaches things differently.”

That makes sense, sort of.

“So I could still aim for this” you say “if I wanted to?”

“Of course” says the King of Hell “When you receive a Gift of mine, you can shape it into demonhood for a follower – who must be willing and know what they’re getting of course.”

“It’s that simple?” you ask

“It is” confirms the King “Unless done as part of a larger task.”

“What do you mean?” you ask “A larger task?”

“Had you chosen it as a bargain” says the King “then you would have to undergo specific trials to earn a specific type of demonhood – for a warrior demon you would need to battle certain foes, for an imp you would need to steal something, for a succubus you’d need to...well, you get the idea.”

That...yeah, you’ll come back to that, maybe.

“So how do I get my facility back?” you ask “can I not simply clear it out myself?”

“Not so simple” says the King, shaking his head “Reaper has designated it a hazardous site under army jurisdiction, he could argue that levelling all sorts of foes at you is a proportional response.” Damn....

“And if I asked it as a favour of you?” you say “or one of the others?”

“The same terms would apply” says the King, with an unpleasant smile “complete a major task, and we would tell the fae it belongs to you.”

Well, that’s something at least...

“How high does the deal with the fae go?” you ask “I mean, could Lord Reaper ask a more powerful fae to attack me? Like Geheganesh?”

“It’s possible” admits the King “but any fae powerful enough to risk a confrontation with the Five is unlikely to listen to one as lowly as Reaper. Geheganesh has other things to occupy him, he never did get over his defeat by Ydes all those years ago, I would be very surprised if the Endless Sands even noticed you little one.” Huh, unlikely, not impossible...

“Now that I rejected it” you say “could you tell me who Jagganatha wanted me to free?”

“I could” says the King “but if I did, he’d probably take the deal off the table, and you want your facility back, yes?”

“Yes” you say grudgingly “But he could offer another task, could he not?”

“Oh indeed” says the King “indeed.”

“My father was a follower of yours” you say quietly “could I see him?”

The King gazes down upon you with a look of...compassion “you may if you wish” he says “though he is currently involved in a war at my request, against the Twenty and One sons of the Golden Emperor, your meeting with him would be amidst a bloody battlefield. Calling him away would hamper my forces chances, but I can arrange for you to go and see him if you wish. I warn you though, he has certain knowledge about Reaper and Ordeyen that was agreed he must keep secret, if he attempts to tell you anything he shouldn’t, I will end the audience.”

“The fae lords here are weaker than us” responds the King of Hell “But the eldest of their kind could challenge us if so inclined, they agreed that our contest could take place on their world, and thanks to Baalzamon it is we who can interpret the rules of the contest, but certain concessions had to be made. You father, and a few others with connections to other Reunited had discovered certain weaknesses of the fae lords. It was agreed that since the fae lords where not, officially, part of the contest that these weaknesses were not to be revealed.”

“So my father knows Lord Reapers weaknesses?” you say “Is that how he beat him?”

The King just nods, as he starts arranging the paper stacks, you dance around his hands as they lift house-sized stacks of paper.

“Would it be possible for one of you to free Kaelyn of being one of her fathers Subsidiary Souls?” you ask

“Yes” says the King of Hell “though you could do it yourself were you to learn the power.”

“How?” you ask

“Once you have the power to divide your soul” says the King of Hell “you could...steal one of Lord Reapers souls, turning it into your own.”

“Then she would be my Subsidiary Soul and not free” you point out.

“But free of her father” says the King “But to answer your next question, yes, any of us could truly make your friend her own individual...for a price.”

Ah yes, it always comes back to that, you think glumly.

“If my father is in battle” you say “then I’ll not see him, now but perhaps another time?” you say hopefully. The King nods in acknowledgement. “And could you tell him I miss him” you add in a small voice “please?”

“A welcome message given his current task” says the King gravely “or perhaps merely a painful reminder, in either case, I shall pass the message on.”

“Thank you” you say, adding “I would like to know what Jagganatha was asking of me” you say.

“Ah” says the King, “Therein lies a tale. To save you a year or two of your life, I will give you the shorter version.”

“A long time ago we were many, then the war came, and many died, reborn again and again through their many souls. For some the poison of death lingered however, having died too many times they became...something else, something obsessed with the destruction of all life. We struck a temporary truce with the rebels and those of our siblings that had become death we named the Hadaens and imprisoned them.”

You wait calmly for the King to finish his story.

“The main chained in the desert was once mortal, long ago, but he gained immortality through his service to the Hadaens and was at one time their highest servant, called the Prophet of the Apocalypse – a grandiose title for a jumped-up necromancer. Still, killing him would only send him to his masters, who would send him out into the galaxy again and again, so he was imprisoned within Geheganesh, chained to a rock, and beneath the rock were buried a number of his creations, foul things. Jagganatha obviously feels unleashing him would be beneficial in some ways, which I doubt.”

“If he was freed” you ask “What would he do?”

“He’d travel far from this world” says the King “and try to free the Harbingers, his greatest works, I expect he’d be puzzled to find at least one of them gone, but still, this world he would ignore for a time, though his creations would run rampant, and upset the field of play.”
