As you think over your options, they all really narrow down to just one. You need to get things for ALL of your girls. A few you could probably just get away with flowers and chocolate, like Riela, Imca and Selvaria, seeing as how they aren’t technically in your harem, but since you’d be giving everyone else stuff it’d be a little awkward to just ignore them.

Irisviel and Illyasviel are also difficult, seeing as how they’re technically houses and all…but it’s not like you could just slap on a fresh coat of paint. Well, maybe you could but you wouldn’t know what they would want. So more gifts for them.

Aurora and the Headmistress are definite choices, though you aren’t sure what to get one of the least girly girls you’ve ever met and the woman who is probably breaking or bending several rules to date/flirt with/mess around with you.

Jewelry, definitely jewelry first. Besides the fact that all of the other things can go bad, wilt, melt or generally be a pain in the ass, jewelry is probably necessary for you seeing as your girls put up with a lot of crap from you, including the fact that you’ve got a lot of other girls and don’t have enough time to spend with all of them. The fat that they don’t kill you on the spot is enough for jewelry.

Thankfully you manage to find a jewelry store relatively easily, seeing as how there’s several in the mall and they all like to advertise on the main thoroughfare’s so nobody can miss them.

Stepping inside, you look around, the store is simply MASSIVE, having what looks like every type of jewelry in existence along with a few you didn’t know existed until right now. As you look about, one of the clerks steps up to you, a smile on her face.

Please don't give it a rushed end. I, as a player, would much prefer you take a break from it and come back to it when you want to, than have an end written by a dissatisfied QM. There's still a lot that's been hinted at that I'd like to see John do, such as fight it out with Chris' Dad for approval, go back to school and do normal things again (at least before the final showdown), help Selvaria deal with what shes dealing with, more about the boat girls, get our own sentient warship/aircraft/thing hinted at near the beginning of the quest, that tournament the strike witches are undergoing, having a war using the delinquents in some capacity, etc etc.

I understand that Merc Quest is much more engaging for you, and this by comparison seems like blatant wish fulfillment. Which it is. But its fun. It's fun because you gave us time as players to explore and do the things we wanted to do. To add the people we wanted to be with; to have those funny little moments with certain harem members and to laugh in the face of typical anime tropes. I know you have a plan, but I don't want to see a great journey end on a mediocre end; or something that's too sudden. Please give consideration to having a break instead of running yourself ragged finishing this.

That's fine, I think what makes enchanting enchanting is that you're putting power into something and making it stick. It's the difference between making a broom fly and making a broom that CAN fly. You could enchant things like air/water/ice but the enchantment would quickly unravel as the material separates, so it would only be good for very simple things.

Next stop is clearly the food emporium. You need not only your supplies for cooking dinner, but you’ve been wanting to try to make your own chocolate and now would be the perfect time to do so. Lots of candy bars only have a bit of cocoa powder in them anyway, so this will be an extra treat for your girls.

Still carefully carrying your bag full of jewelry you and Jenkins step inside one of the biggest and most well stocked food stores that you’ve ever seen.

Jenkins looks at the list casually, but you see his eye twitch a hair at some of the ingredients you have listed.

“This is going to be quite a lot of money, you know that right?” he asks you with only mild concern.

“I know,” you say, already headed off to find everything you’re going to need to make homemade chocolate, the good kind, “But seeing as how it’s a special occasion I need to make the best I can.”

Jenkins just nods, heading out deep into the store in that special flash step he has, moving quickly from place to place.

You head off into the store, selecting the best ingredients you’ll need to make chocolate, actual milky chocolate. It’s funny, you’ve mostly just stuck with entrée’s and sides, you may need to start breaking out into more desserts.

Eventually you arrive back at the front of the store to find Jenkins waiting for you, a grocery cart full of goods waiting for you to pay for it.

“I found everything you wanted,” he says, “Though it’s probably going to hurt your wallet.”

“It’s fine,” you say, walking up to the counter to pay for it all, “I’ll deal with it somehow.”

Jenkins is right, the final total hurts your wallet pretty badly.

However, you’ve got most of what you need for Valentine’s Day, even if you almost forgot.

You look at Jenkins, deep in thought. You really want to do most everything yourself, but you know as a good chef that sometimes help is needed. So you decide to compromise just a little bit.

“You and her can get everything set up,” you say, pulling out your enchanting tools even as you speak, “If I’m not back in time to make everything in time for an appropriate dinner, you two start. But if I get done fast enough then I’ll make everything myelf.”

“Alright,” says Jenkins, taking the food out of your workshop and heading towards the kitchen, “We’ll have everything ready for you.”

You don’t even acknowledge the fact that Jenkins is gone, already pulling out the jewelry you bought everyone. You need to enchant every last one of them and to do that in time for you to do most of the cooking is going to take your best.

Luckily, you already have the perfect enchantment in mind for all of them, one that you think will come in handy and assuage their fears at the same time. Not that all of them actively worry about you during the day, but it’ll also let them know if you’re in danger and how you’re doing if they want to, at least in general.

It takes you a bit longer than you had hoped, but not enough so that you can’t cook your food like you wanted. Still rubbing your hands from the workshop and the intricate work it took to get the enchantments on such small objects as necklaces and earrings, you make it into the kitchen just in time, Irisviel is moving towards the stove to put some items in.

“Ah John, you made it,” she says, holding out the tray for you to slide in.

“I always do,” you say, even as you begin to make your best meal ever.

I won't lie, Guide, I'm not exactly happy that this has fallen second to your new quest, even if I understand why, and the several month hiatus before this doesn't make things better either way.

Still, I'd rather you do what you enjoy and not force yourself to write this because its an obligation rather than something you enjoy. This might not be a traditional TTRPG, but it's still important that both sides of the game enjoy playing. All in all, I'd say taking a break is probably the best option, even if it sucks for those of us who aren't followers of merc quest.

As for HPQ, I wouldn't mind it being more of a Slice-of-Life kind of quest for a while similar to what went on in this thread. Loosely connected stories where we go on small adventures with our girls, all the while leveling up what we can and getting each of them to Permanent Harem Member. Then when every little adventure seems to be exhausted, launch into the final arc that covers how we fight the Anti-Lover. That way it gives the sense that, "this thing is finally coming to an end, let's make it something to remember."

They can be run sporadically in-between Merc Quest to keep your sanity in check, maybe as a sort-of breather episode after something particularly heavy. This quest has been running since, what, last spring? I can understand how it can take it's toll after having so many characters become so overpowered in such a short time (like, "Alright, so she's legendary in everything. What now?")

I'll admit, I was rather disinterested in Merc 2030 when you first brought it out, and felt pretty resentful when I noticed you giving more attention to it than HPQ. Call it an old guard growing disillusion with fancy new quests, I'd been around in HPQ since the beginning and would've liked the focus to stay on it.

That said though, with time, I've come to enjoy Merc as quite a bit so far as well, and am interested in seeing how it develops. The setting and characters are interesting, and so is our good boy Will. (I might be slightly biased on that aspect since you introduced Not!Esdeath, though...)

So Guide, I'll say, do what you what. I've learned that when the QM isnt having fun writing his quests, the players wont have much fun with it either, so what you want is most important.

My votes for Option 2. This way, your players still get to have fun with your quests, and most importantly, so do you.

HPQ is my favourite quest on /tg/ right now, so if its gonna be done, I'd want it done right, when you're having fun bringing it to its well-deserved conclusion.

Understand that I too, am not happy that I've let my enthusiasm for this quest slide. It feels like a betrayal to you all for not having it all planned out and ready to finish. But I guess it comes from starting with no idea what I was doing either.

We can see that this is wearing you out. I have loved this quest and want to see it end well, but realize how exhausting this quest is. I do think this idea could alleviate some of the stress as our entire harem doesn't need to be there for the entirety of the random threads. Power creep is a problem that is always impossible to figure out without cribbing the ending. Maybe the ending can knock us down a few power levels before the random quests. As it stands right now option 2 may give you some R&R from the quest. If on the other hand you feel that you just need to finish the quest and get it off your plate, then feel free to intersperse it. I still can't believe the quest lasted this long.

Just know that however you want to do this you have my full support. I have been here since the first thread and continue to think you are the best QM. Whatever you do I will be here until the end.

Just run when you feel like it Guide. As the other anon pointed out you could try running smaller episodes with a focus on fewer characters at a time instead of constant large group events. Rather like how Mercs Quest tends to work actually. This would cause "time" to pass slower in the quest but it would be easier for you to write.

We all know that, sadly, the likelihood of another HPQ thread will dwindle as time passes.

Anon Dude, give Merc Quest Guide runs a shot. Grants, it's full of FEELS, but it's got some great lighthearted moments, mostly at the bar or with regards to blankets (I feel Will's middle name might be Linus)

I am new to HPQ as far as questers go read this in the Archives and only started reading this January for real time quests however as an avid quest reader I like seeing things done right. HPQ is a wonderful quest thread and I'd hate to see it have a bad ending because you have gotten bored and disinterested.

Next Merc Quest when? That shit is #1 on my quest list and I've been there since the start atleast.

I understand. I don't blame you either. But I really do want to finish HPQ right. I look back on things like the Karasuba fights, angel cuddles and many others with great fondness. But I also wonder where the spark went, which was probably when I let John get massively OP, with little chance of failing. I think a break will do me good and allow me to come up with a proper way to challenge John and co again without making it a stupid ass pull.

I've read to much fanfiction to really believe the 'it's not abandoned till I say so' thing so many authors pull.
