[Fate Points: 3]

You are Victor Kane, Sentinel Cadet, Savant, and a (pending) Special Forces Team Leader. You recently just trawled through the Sentinel Archives looking for Cadets to fill out your Team and successfully discovered Four of them.

You are currently interviewing Ryan Blackburn, Archer Extraordinaire and a Wind-Affinity Trainer.
_

“I've read your file and have to say I'm impressed.” You start. “But I'd rather get to know you face-to-face instead of a computer screen.”

“Makes sense.” Ryan agrees. “But that goes both ways. If you’re asking me questions, I get to do the same for you.” He looks behind you at Darius. “Same if you want to ask anything big guy.”

Darius chuckles, “I think I’ll let Victor handle it.”

“Sounds fair to me.” You reply. ”So, where are you from?”

“I was born in Fortree City in Hoenn.” Ryan begins. “Spent the first ten years of my life there. You?”

“I was born in Orre, on the Frontier.” You reply. “Grew up in a small town and came to the Academy when I was nine. What lead you to join the Sentinels in the first place?”

Ryan looks toward the window, apparently thinking. “I guess… I wanted more from life. I didn’t get along with my family and Fortree is honestly a pretty crappy place to live. It’s easier to put our homes on top of a tree than deal with the monsters that live in the forest and it’s so remote that you almost never have contact with anyone. So, I left when I was ten. Best decision I ever made.”

He looks back at you. “Same question right back at you. Why’d you join the Sentinels?”

You think back to ten years ago. The Rangers that had found you in the wreckage of your hometown had brought you back to Gateon Port. It had taken days before you were ready to do anything besides lie in bed. It took a while to find your motivation, but it came to you.

“I honestly became a Sentinel to help people.” You answer. “My home was destroyed when I was young and I swore that I wouldn’t let that happen to anyone else. So I joined the Sentinels.”

You smile a little, thinking of the second reason. “Also, my father was a Sentinel. I’d like to think he’d be proud of me for choosing this life.”

Ryan smiles a little himself. “You usually don’t hear too much about altruism these days. Alright, what’s your next question?”

“Well, group chemistry is going to be a major factor,” You muse. “I already booted another prospect because she couldn’t be civil at all. I looked you up because you seemed like the best Scout and Stealth Specialist we have. You have any problems with that?”

The Archer snorts. “Not at all. I know what I’m good at and I work to get better at it. That’s not really a question.”

“Fine then, can you work in a team environment full of high stress situations and face possible death or the death of your comrades?”

“Yeah, I’m good with teams. Helping coordinate plans is one of my better skills.”

Ryan then pauses, pursing his lips and staring at the floor. “I can’t say that I’m going to be just fine if someone I like is killed. But I think I can cope. Death is a part of life, and even more so for us. And if someone I don’t like gets killed...” He shrugs. “No skin off my back.”

He looks up at you. “Can you handle death? If someone under your command dies?”

>[Cont.]

You are making these too late, killing me here man.
>>
>>38095431

You take a deep breath as painful memories resurface.

“I've... known loss before.” You say. “I won’t say that it wouldn't affect me, I'm not heartless. But I can handle it well enough to not just break down on the spot. There is a time and a place for grief. I learned that the hard way.”

You shake your head. “Anyways, any hobbies? I can tell that making arrows is a good guess.”

Ryan grins, “You can say that. I’ve just been coming up with new and improved ways to take down enemies. Aside from fletching, I like music and camping. You?”

“Reading, mainly.” You say. “Though I do go for some wargaming and video games from time to time. Any chance you can give us a demonstration of your Archery skills sometime? Say, tomorrow?”

Ryan shrugs, “Sure, I don’t have a problem with it. Is that everything you wanted to ask?”

“I think that's everything I need for now, unless you had anything else you wanted to ask me or Darius?” You reply.

Ryan thinks for a moment before looking at Darius. “So, I’ve heard plenty about Victor, but what about you Darius? You got any answers to those questions? Where are you from? Why’d you join the Sentinels? How do you deal with death?”

Darius chuckles, a deep rumbling sound that fits the giant man all too well. “Victor knows most of this but I’ll tell you all the sam. I’m from Hoenn, like you, but from Dewford Town. Southernmost outpost for the entire League, but fuckall actually happens there. It’s customary for members of my family to enlist for military service but I wasn’t going to settle for being a Guardsman so I went to the Sentinels.”

“As for death…” Darius trails off. “I’ve seen many members of my family enlist. I’ve seen many return, some whole and healthy, some injured, and some in coffins. Death is something I’ve lived with my whole life. I will mourn. I will make my Peace. And I will move on.”

Ryan is silent for a minute as he stares at Darius with piercing eyes. Darius returns the gaze, calmly and evenly, seemingly unperturbed. Eventually, the Archer looks back to you.

>[Cont.]
>>
>>38096905

“I don’t have anything else to ask,” He says.

You nod. “What’s a good time to meet up tomorrow?”

“Thirteen Hundred Hours.” Ryan responds. “I don’t have class then and more fields are empty since most people are at lunch.”

“Got it.” You say. “Oh, do you know anyone who you think might be a good addition to the team? I've got a few lined up for other positions but I'd love to hear your opinion."

Ryan shrugs. “Depends what position and who you’ve got in mind. Who are the other candidates?”

“Joseph Bryant-” You’re immediately cut off by Ryan’s scoff.

“Bryant? That hothead? I’ll grant that he’s good at what he does, most of the time, but he’s a loose cannon.” Ryan says, anger evident in his face. “He blew our position during a training exercise last month when he tried hitting the other team’s flank. Alone. We lost that one badly. We’re all better off without him.”

You blink. “Well, I haven’t interviewed him yet, but I’ll keep your opinion in mind. The other two are Katherine Clarke and Lyn Strom.”

Ryan frowns. “Don’t know much about either of them, so no opinion.”

>[Cont.]
>>
>>38096930

“Well, thanks for your help Ryan.” You say, walking towards the door. “I’ll see you around.”

Ryan waves. “Glad to help.”

Darius gives Ryan a nod, which is returned, before he falls in at your side. Behind you, Ryan returns to his worktable.

You exit the Dorms, making your way to the Machine Shop in the Research Hub.

The Research Hub,more often known as the Hub on Campus, is an underground facility owned and maintained by the League. It lies just South of Sentinel HQ and links directly to the Guard HQ and Ranger Base via tunnels. It contains a plethora of labs and engineering stations for military research. The fact that Clarke and Strom both have direct access to facilities that are normally restricted only to scientists speaks a lot of their abilities.

As you approach the entrance, you’re stopped by a Guardsman wearing regulation fatigues and carrying a heavy musket.

“Sorry,” he says. “Only authorized personnel allowed.”

“Is there anyway we can send a message to someone inside?” You ask the Guardsman. “I need to talk to Katherine Clarke and Lyn Strom?”

The Guardsman’s eyebrows rise. “You wanna talk to the crazy chick?” He looks behind him to the Hub entrance. “Yeah, we can do that. Wait here a moment.”

He turns around, walking towards the entrance to the Hub. It’s a grey concrete bunker surrounded by trees. Two more guards patrol around the area, but they're a pretty token force. The Guardsman you talked to walks up to the metal door set into the side of the bunker and presses a button on the panel next to it. He says something into it and waits a moment before receiving a scratchy response. He turns around and waves you and Darius forward.

“Okay, Clarke said that you can come in. Strom is a bit busy though so you’ll probably need to check on her later.”

“That’s fine.” You say.

The blast door slides open with a grinding jutter revealing an airlock lit by harsh white light. There’s another blast door on the other side of the airlock.

“They’re going to have to decontaminate you before you go down.” The Guardsman says. “You don’t need to strip down to you skivvies anymore, thankfully. Good luck with your meeting.”

The door grinds shut behind you as you enter the airlock, leaving you and Darius alone in the painful light. There’s a hissing sound and some kind of white gas fills the chamber from nozzles in the floor before being sucked out by more nozzles in the ceiling. The interior blast door opens up and you and Darius step through.

This side of the bunker is extremely heavily defended. Barricades, heavy metal slabs, are set up in a wedge formation, facing the door. No less than six Guardsmen stand ready here clad in heavy armor and carrying massive advanced rifles which just so happened to be trained on you and Darius. A Scyther, Mightyena and Torkoal all stand ready next to their respective Trainers, who are clad in lighter armor. Behind the security team, several open elevators stand ready, some passenger, some cargo.

One of the Trainers steps forward, a woman, and the Scyther steps up behind her.

“Identify yourselves.” She orders, glaring at the two of you.

You hold your hands up in a placating gesture as you speak. “I’m Cadet Victor Kane and this is Cadet Darius Hammerworth.”

The woman doesn’t back down. “What is your business here?”

“I need to talk to Katherine Clarke and Lyn Strom.” You say.

The woman glares for a few more seconds before sighing and turning around. “You’re cleared to enter. I’m here to guide you around during your visit.”

>[Cont.]
>>
>>38098795

“Well?” She turns to glare at you again. “Are you coming?”

You and Darius quickly exchange glances before hurrying after the woman. She enters the elevator and it’s all you can do to enter it yourselves before it closes.

“I am Captain Hathaway.” The woman says as she presses a button on the elevator panel. “You will address me as Captain at all times. We are going directly to the Level 4 labs after we deposit your weapons and Pokeballs at the secondary checkpoint.”

She affixes you with another glare, as though daring you to object. “This is not negotiable.”

You and Darius nod as the elevator doors open. You’re surprised, you didn’t feel the elevator move at all. That’s impressive. Outside the doors is a second checkpoint, filled with just as many guards but several empty armory stands bolted to the walls as well. You guess that there aren’t many people visiting the Hub who don’t work there.

You slot your sword and bow and quiver into the provided spaces, and step back in surprise when the rack slides into the wall and is covered by a glass shield. Next to you, Darius lets out a grunt when his hammer is also sealed.

“Your weapons will be returned when you leave.” The Captain says, as she reaches out a hand the other holding a canister of some kind. “Now, your Pokeballs.”

>[Cont.]
>>
>>38098812

Darius hands his Pokeball to the Captain and you follow suit, albeit relectantly. You calm yourself with the knowledge you still have Geist with you. The balls are slipped into the canister, which shuts itself and beeps once.

“I will carry your Pokemon with me.” The Captain says, hanging the canister to her belt. “They will also be returned to you when you leave.”

The Captain leads you two to the elevator once more and presses another button. The doors shut and you get the feeling you should be moving. Instead, the doors open once again after a few moments, revealing a hallway, spaced with doors on either side. The Captain leads you down to one door and presses her hand, still gloved, to the scanner on the side of it. The door slides open with a hiss and you are lead in.

Inside, is a mess. Mechanical parts hang from the ceiling and other doodads clutter the shelves and workbenches. You make out scrap, car parts, robotic arms, computer pieces and all manner of knick-knacks. On the far side of the room, standing with her back to you and fiddling with something on the table in front of her, is who you presume to be Katherine Clarke.

"Excuse me, Katherine Clarke?” You begin. “My name is Victor Kane and this is my friend Darius Hammerworth, if I can have a moment of your time I have a proposal I'd like to discuss with you."

The young woman puts down the device in her hand and turns to face the two of you, standing up straight as she does. She’s a few inches taller than you but still well below Darius’s height. Her hair is a reddish-brown and her eyes a pale blue. A small silver chain is hung around her neck and there’s a few greasemarks on her face and arms and the tank-top she’s wearing. The very small tank-top that clings very very closely to her torso. You try to focus on her face.

“Yeah, I heard ya when they called me.” She drawls, her voice low and a little gruff. “And I know about your ‘proposal.’” She makes air quotes with her hands when she says proposal.

She walks over to another bench which is covered by wires and computer parts. Reaching into the tangle, she presses a button and a holographic screen pops into life above it.

“I got a ping when you looked at my file in the Archives.” She continues, while poking the screen, actually manipulating the contents. “So I checked who could be looking at my info. You also looked at the profiles of a few other students and your search history told me you were looking for Special Forces info. I can put two and two together.”

>[Cont.]
>>
>>38099459

“So,” You venture. “are you willing to leave your lab to test your inventions in the field?”

Katherine smiles at you, revealing a chipped front tooth. “See, now that’s a question I don’t know the answer to yet. I love working here. It’s safe and I have everything I need. But testing my tech in the field would be awesome. The problem is, I don’t know if a Special Forces Unit is the best place to test it. Not to mention I don’t know if I’ll get along with the folks in my squad. It’s a hard choice, and you’re going to have to sell it to me.”

She leans back against her computer… mangle, still smiling. “You can ask me any questions you want too. I guess whether or not you want me is gonna be a big factor as well.” She crosses her arms, which incidentally pushes her… assets up.

>>
>>38099479
"Normally I'd start with more general questions but, I think it might be better to talk about your research if that's ok with you. What project are you currently most passionate about and are there any hangups keeping it from progressing?"

I don't think personality will be much of an issue, she seems agreeable enough after all. Everything is irrelevant until we figure out if field work is right for her.

You cough before speaking. "Well I can personally say that I do indeed want you for my squad, someone with your skills would undoubtedly be an... asset to the team.”

“But?” Katherine interrupts.

“... But I'd rather you accept knowing everything about those involved and what opportunities you’ll have.” You say. “ To make this all fair we'll go question for question. Tell me about yourself. Where are you from? Why’d you join the Sentinels? What do you bring to a team, as a Cadet and an Engineer?”

“Hmm,” Katherine rubs at a spot of grease on her elbow with her left hand. “Well, I was born in Sunyshore City, in Sinnoh. The city is pretty dependent on Engineers to keep things running so I was pretty much destined to become one from birth. Only, the problem is that I like tinkering way too much. I could have attended a University, gotten accredited, then applied for research grants but that would have taken way too long. So, I joined the Sentinels to get access to military funding and proved that I was a damn good inventor. That’s a decade shaved off of that time.”

Wait, if she’s in your class, then she joined the Sentinels when she was nine or ten. Damn, she had a plan prepared when she was that young. That’s some dedication and intelligence.

>[Cont.]
>>
>>38100173

“And as for what I bring to a team… anything and everything related to technology.” She says. “Computers, armor, weapons, gadgets, you name it, I’ve probably had a hand in designing something like it. I can access and build all of it, if I have the facilities. I’m a good hand with my Wrench too.”

She hefts a heavy looking metal rod from the pouch on her side and swings it. It immediately extends into a staff. A twist at the center makes both ends spark with electricity. Another twist makes blades pop out of the ends. A final twist makes the whole things collapse. It’s a versatile weapon, definitely.

“The Wrench is my name for it.” She continues. “I was gonna come up with an acronym, but I couldn’t find anything I liked.”

She shrugs, “Oh well, what are you gonna do?”

Putting the Wrench back into her pouch, Katherine crosses her arms again. “So, my questions. Let’s see…”

She taps her chin while thinking. “Well, I already know where you were born and what skills you’ve got. Okay, why’d you join the Sentinels, what makes you think you were chosen to lead a Special Forces Team and… how much did my inventions play a part in your decision to recruit me?

>Answer?

>>38100187
"I joined in memory of my hometown, you probably wouldn't find it on any maps anymore. I was chosen to lead because some of the higher ups noticed my unusual variety in pokemon types and grew to believe that I was very adaptable. Your inventions were definitely a driving factor in my choice to interview you. From what I've read I think they could greatly expand the options our team would have in the field."

You nod. “Thanks for hearing me out.”

“No problem.” Katherine says. “I’ll think about your offer. I can’t say that I’m uninterested, but I need to really consider it.”

You and Darius return to the Captain, who appears to be typing on her Pokegear. She looks up when you approach, flipping the device shut.

“Ready to go?” She asks, her voice still hard.

“I’d like to see Lyn Strom now.” You answer.

“Follow me then.”

The Officer leads you back to the elevator and hits a button for the third floor this time. Another motionless elevator ride and you’re looking into an identical hallway. Hathaway leads you down the hall to another blank door. Pressing her hand against the scanner opens the door once more revealing a very different sight to the workshop you saw before. It’s very sterile and white, lots of lab tables, computers and people in white coats.

You’d assume that it’s Lyn Strom but she’s wearing a full face covering helmet. The helmet itself is covered in sensors of all sorts, but it doesn’t look like the girl has noticed you at all.

“I’ll leave you here.” The Captain says before walking away.

Well, you’ve apparently found Strom. Now, how to approach her…

>Action?

[Currently helping my parents clean crap out. Also, being nostalgia bombed by my Pokemon cards.]
>>
>>38112169
Cadet Strom? We are going to need a few minutes of your time. Provided whatever your working on right now can wait.
>>
>>38112169
Observe what she's doing

Dont wanna accidentally ruin an experiment and make her hate us
>>
>>38112226
seconded. also, if she really is smarter than us than i want her on our team.
>>
>>38112256
Yeah, katherine seems a bit antisocial and considering everyones been calling her crazy id prefer to have someone else as long as storms abilities are comparible.
>>
if she doesn't have her hands full, introduce yourself and ask for a few minutes of her time.
>>
>>38112169

You decide to step back and observe the woman you assume is Cadet Strom for a moment. She continues to stand motionless, her arms at her side. The helmet pretty obviously has a front, but you’re not sure how one would see out of it. A few lights flash on the outside every once in a while and occasionally a panel twitches.

After five minutes of just standing there, you’re beginning to grow a little annoyed. Darius has sat himself down on a stool nearby, patiently waiting. He’s always been pretty relaxed.

Eventually, the lights on the helmet all activate and stay on and the girl moves her head looking around the room. What you assume to be her gaze passes over you before twitching back to focus.

“Oh! Hello there.” Her voice is surprisingly clear through the helmet easily showing how chipper and upbeat she is.

“Sorry, if you were waiting on me.” She continues. “I was calibrating this helmet and that takes a really, really, long time. Did you need something?”

You clear your throat. “Cadet Strom?”

She nods. “That’s me!”

“We are going to need a few minutes of your time.” You say. “Provided whatever you’re working on right now can wait.”

>>
>>38113339

“Well, so long as you don’t mind me wearing this helmet the whole time.” She replies while putting her hands on her hips. “I need to test this interface out and it’s still feeding data to the computers.”

“That’s fine.” You say. “I’m Victor Kane and this, “ you gesture to Darius, “ is Darius Hammerworth. We’ve come to interview you for a position in my Special Forces Team.”

“Oh.” Lyn says in a small voice. “I really wasn’t expecting this. Uh, um, I’m definitely interested in the position. But what made you chose me?”

One of the best in your field, and a good fighter as well.

First: LOOK AT THAT HELMET I WANT HER ON THE TEAM NOW

Second:
>Well we were looking for somebody with your skill set for the team and you were among the best suited.
>>
>>38113369
Combat ready, solid tactical skills, engineer. She's got the makings of a great team member if she can work well with others.
>>
if she's as smart as people make her out to me, she should know exactly why she'd make an excellent operative.
>>
>>38113540
Clarke did say not to underestimate her. She's probably evaluating us or something.
>>
>>38113369
>I really wasn't expecting this

If Kat knew about us so easily, and if this girl is as smart as they say, then I'm not buying this. But what exactly does she gain by feigning ignorance?
>>
>>38113369
"Your prowess in engineering is superb, for one thing. Should I stop there, or does someone have an ego?" That last part is a bit of a joke, so laugh or something. Follow it up with: "Anyways, you should know exactly why we're interested in you as a candidate."
>>
>>38113636

Just because shes smart doesnt mean she's the kind of person who would hack into the database to keep tabs on her file. Seems like Kats gotta be pretty paranoid to do that.
>>
>>38113746
now that I think about, she does spend like all her time in the lab. didn't her dossier say she only leaves to beat people up? She also took forever to notice us. Maybe she's super absorbed in her work and doesn't pay attention to much else.
>>
>>38113369

Katherine said this girl was smart. Gauging competence incorrectly never turns out well for anybody.

“Well, your engineering prowess is superb.” You begin. “ You’re ranked among the highest in our class. Should I stop there or does someone have an Ego?”

You chuckle, making the last part sound like a joke.

Lyn giggles herself, a definitively girlish sound. “I guess I can be a little vain.”

“You probably know why we want you on the team though.”

Lyn nods. “I’m a polymath, good in combat and outside of it. And, I can do this.” She holds up her left hand and a small spark of electricity jumps from her middle finger to the tip of her index.

“So, I guess you might as well start this interview. What did you want to ask?”

>Questions?

>Assuming, that you ask her where she’s from and why she joined the Sentinels.
>>
>>38114020
>Apart from where is she from and why did she joined the sentinels, question her about her relationships with his previous training groups and how comfortable is she in a group

>>38114020
Besides what we always ask, ask her if she'll have any problems deferring authority. We're going to be leading this team, and while we really do appreciate all the help and input we can get, we have to know that our decisions will be upheld. Don't forget to ask her opinion on the other possible members as well.
>>
>>38114020
Ask her what she actually does involving engineering that could benefit us.
>Also point out how dope that helmet it
>>
Bump
>>
>>38114020

“Well, let’s start off with basics.” You say while pulling up a stool from under a nearby table. “Where are you from and why did you join the Sentinels?”

“Ah!” Lyn hops up onto the table she was working at. “I was born in Vermilion City. Technically not that far from here. I joined the Sentinels because… well, I kinda just Knew that I should. I mean, it’s not like it was a bad idea. Probably one of the best decisions I ever made. But I pretty much decided the entire course of my life based on a hunch.” She shrugs and you get the feeling she’s probably looking a little sheepish under that helmet.

“Well, I’m not going to criticize you for that.” You reply. “I joined because I wanted to help people. And because my father was a Sentinel before me.”

“That’s awfully noble of you.” Lyn says, leaning forward, her arms pressed between your legs. “Your father must be proud.”

You feel a small pang of pain in your chest and grimace. “Well, he’s dead.” You mutter.

“Oh!” Lyn sits up straight and brings her hands up in front of where her mouth would be if she wasn’t wearing that helmet. “I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to-”

>[Cont.]
>>
>>38115393

“No, no.” You interrupt her. “It’s fine. It happened a long time ago. And I’d like to think that he’d be proud of me.”
Lyn nods eagerly, lowering your hands. “I’m sure that wherever he is, he’s happy for you.”

“Anyways, more questions. How well do you work with groups?”

A shrug. “It really depends on the group. I synergize pretty well with Vanguards. Let them draw attention, and strike the enemies’ weak spots. Your friend is probably really good at that.”

Darius nods silently, a small smile gracing his face. You know from personal experience that Darius is a damn good Vanguard. When working together with Yamo, he’s an unstoppable force that completely annihilates everything in its path.

“How about following orders?” You query. “If I’m going to be a Team Leader, I’m going to need you to listen to me, no questions asked.”

“Ehhh, that depends.” Lyn replies. “I’m willing to obey sound tactical decisions and stuff like that. But if you order me to do something suicidal, we’re going to have problems.”

You nod in assent. “I expected as much. I probably won’t be giving you orders like that without good reason though.”

“In that case, I’m going to ask for that reason. I really, really, like being alive and healthy.” She says with a giggle.

>[Cont.]
>>
>>38115414

“Hah.” You snort. “I’ll try to accommodate you. What kind of engineering specialties do you have?”

“A little bit of everything.” Lyn immediately replies. “Chem, Bio, Physics, Electronics, software, hardware…” she rattles off a few more topics while ticking them off on her fingers. “I’m only an amateur inventor though. Most of my stuff is based off of Crazy Clarke’s. Like this helmet.” She raps against said head covering. “I just optimized some of the cameras and overhauled the software.”

“Well, as a person who’s pretty bad with tech, I can say it looks damn impressive.” You reply.

Lyn giggles. “Thanks.”

“Now, an important question,” you say. ”How do you deal with loss?”

Lyn goes very still and is quiet for a few moments. “... Honestly, I don’t have much to compare it to. My mother and father are still alive and my friends here haven’t ever left me. I’d like to say that I can deal with it just fine, but honestly, I don’t know yet.” She hugs herself.

death will be a huge part of our life. of she joins the squad, she will face it. she or her pokemon may die. maybe her comrades will. we'll likely have to use lethal force at some point, and deal with war and murder.

does she still want to actually join a special forces squad despite these things? if so, does she have a good enough reason to leave the comfort of her safe and pleasant life here in the Hub?
>>
>>38115639
I'm guessing Clarke is Katherine. Her last name is Clarke.

Yamo is Darius's Blaziken.
>>
>>38115437

You’ve never really had much experience with the fairer sex. Now you have to comfort one that you barely know. Striding over to her, you stop about a foot away, standing a bit awkwardly. How exactly do you reassure her without lying?

You place a hand on her back, between her shoulders, and rub in small circles. “I’m not going to lie to you. This is a dangerous job. It’s a dangerous life. You heard the speech the Marshall gave this morning. Most of us don’t survive past ten years. We might die. Or our Pokemon or our friends.”

Shit, this is actually really depressing. You need to change the tune. Thinking back to your father, you come up with an answer.

“But we keep the memories of those we love close to our hearts.” You say in a lowered voice. “And we move forward, with our dreams and ambition. It’s not the end of the journey that matters for us, it’s what we do along the way.”

For a moment you don’t think Lyn heard you, as she stays hunched over with her arms wrapped around herself. But then she straightens and wraps those arms around you instead. You’re a bit surprised at the action, but return the hug anyways.

“Thank you.” She murmurs.

She lets go at the same time you do and clears her throat. “I don’t know if I’m really ready for that kind of life. But I’m willing to try. I’d like to join your Team, Victor.”

You grin. “Thanks for your support. I’m grateful you’re willing to give this a shot.”

“Hang on a second.” Lyn says and she grabs the helmet and pulls it off of her head.

The girl underneath is very pretty. Blonde hair, amber eyes, a small nose and a brilliant smile. She’s slightly flushed but still looking very happy.

“I figured we might as well meet face to actual face before you leave.” She hold out her hand. “Hi, I’m Lyn.”

You smile back and take her hand, giving it a firm shake. “Hi Lyn, I’m Victor.”

“It’s great to meet you!” She practically glowing at this point.

“Same to you.” You finish. “Hopefully, we’ll be seeing more of each other in the future.”

“Yep!” She nods exuberantly. “Oh, before you go…” And then she’s leaning forward and pressing her lips against your cheek.

It’s so sudden that it’s already over by the time you react. Your normally razor sharp reflexes seem to be a bit dull today. Of course, this is just your mind pinging random thoughts as you try to deal with a pretty girl kissing you. Again.

>[Cont.]
>>
>>38118611

With a soft smack, the kiss ends. Lyn backs up and winks at you while turning away. “That’s for being a gentleman and helping a lady in distress. See ya around Victor.” And then she’s flouncing away helmet in the crook of her arm.

You blink. Once. Twice. Damn, you didn’t think girls would be all over you if you started to actively interact with them. Then you remember Katrina. Yeah, it must be a fluke or something. Ivy has her Savantness and Lyn is, well, bubbly. They’re just exceptions is all.

There’s a snort from behind you and you turn to see Darius pointedly looking away while covering his mouth with a fist. You glare at him. It’s pretty obvious from the way his shoulders are shaking he’s trying to avoid laughing. He mostly succeeds, a few snorts escaping.

“Yeah, yeah, laugh it up.” You growl as you make your way back to Captain Hathaway.

Darius steps up behind you, an innocent expression on his face. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” He rumbles, his words taking on an amused tone.

The Captain is once again tapping away at her pokegear, which is immediately shut and stowed away as you approach her.

>[Cont.]
>>
>>38118646

“All done?” She asks. At your nod she sighs. “Finally, let’s go get your weapons.”

A quick stop to the Security Checkpoint has your weapons back in your hands and a few minutes later, the Captain is handing you your Pokeballs back. You calmly attach them to your hip, although internally you’re very relieved to have your companions returned to you.

“Alright then.” The Captain says. “Get outta here.”

You heed her orders and make your way out the airlock. Some uncomfortably bright light later, you step back out onto the surface. The sun has set and the moon has risen. You can hear the chirping of insects in the night as you take a deep breath of the cool air. The Hub’s air is stuffy, no doubt recycled through air conditioners.

Darius stretches his arms above his head and cracks his neck. “So, wanna grab some dinner?”

You nod. “Sure. we can discuss the candidates we’ve met so far.”

The two of you make your way to the Dining Hall, swiping your IDs and entering the cavernous building. You both grab some trays, and sit at a table in a rocky area near the pool.

>[Cont.]

>>38118646

bro u just jelly
>>
>>38118697

After letting your Pokemon out, you all tuck in. Shellshocker has jumped into the pool and is apparently chasing after some Luvdisc for dinner. Cobalt simply inserts an entire tray of chow into her mouth and spits the tray back out onto the table. Terra is apparently not interested in food at all and is amusing herself by building a castle out of dirt and rocks. So far she’s got two walls up and is working on a third. Yamo, being much bigger and wiser than your Pokemon, sits down cross-legged on a boulder nearby after swallowing her soup, apparently meditating.

“So, Victor.” You hear Darius say from across you. You take a bite out of your Taurus burger and turn to Darius who is apparently on his third of the same.

“What do you think of our ‘candidates’ so far?”

yeah but she has better assets. (I mean her inventions jeez anon get your mind outta the gutter) She might give us access to OP equips, she's just as capable in combat, can probably replicate Lyn's ability with a gadget and is likely better equipped mentally for chaotic situations. and she is less of a leader i.e. won't contradict our judgement as much whereas Lyn explicitly stated she might.
>>
>>38119046
Did you read the part where Lyn said she bases most of her stuff off of what Clark makes?

She also said that the only reason she wouldn't follow orders is if they were obviously suicidal -- something which we, just as well, explicitly stated we wouldn't be doing.
>>
>>38119106
>Did you read the part where Lyn said she bases most of her stuff off of what Clark makes?
You are supposing that Clarke would share her objects with her when she comes to us.

Okay, I noticed something.

Katherine makes a ton of stuff but she said she needs resources and facilities. We could just befriend her and set up a deal where we test her gear in the field in exchange for some of her tech permanently given to our squad. Lyn has already shown that she's good at modifying Clarke's work so she can maintain it in the field while providing other skills.

Lyn seems too soft to be of much use in the field.

You know if it comes down to it, we could always have Kathrine and Lyn give a demonstration like we're doing with Ryan. Give them both a chance to show their skills and any tricks they have up their sleeves, plus lets not forget Kathrine is still considering our offer and my turn us down in the end. Not to say we couldn't stay on friendly terms and maybe have here be an official/unofficial Engineer to help with equipment and tune ups if she wants, plus we could field test her stuff for her if she doesn't want to leave the labs. Also we should consider having Ivy give a demonstration as well, not so much Medic wise but more to see what she can do outside of healing.
>>
>>38119732
this does make sense.
>>
You know, we never asked if Clarke would be able to handle grief that well. She could be just as bad as Lyn in that case.
>>
>>38118726

You think the question over while chewing on your burger.

You swallow. “Blackburn is almost a shoo-in. He’s got the skill and the mentality for fieldwork. Clarke on the other hand seems to have commitment issues. She’s got a real gift, but outside of her inventions and Engineering prowess she doesn’t seem have much to bring to the table. However, her inventions might be just that valuable. Lyn is pretty talented in a bunch of fields but she’s a little… soft.”

Darius grumbles as he scarfs down his fourth burger. Upon washing it down with water, he begins to speak.

“I agree on the topic of Ryan.” Darius’s baritone voice intones. “He’s certainly a capable warrior and I’d feel safe with him at my back. On the topic of Clarke and Strom, though…” He trails off, thinking.

“They both have their deficiencies. Clarke will likely be heavily dependent on facilities in order to keep producing her devices. She can fight and maintain equipment otherwise but that’s about it for her. Lyn on the other hand is already proven to possess expertise in many fields. Her only failing is that her heart is still a little tender. It often takes more time to learn those skills than it does to harden a heart against pain and grief, especially with the lives we’ll be leading. That’s just what I think though. Ultimately, it’s your choice Victor.”

You ponder the questions for a moment, looking around the hall. On the ground nearby, Terra appears to be digging a moat around her castle, which has four walls and four turrets. Shellshocker has climbed out of the pool and is now lying on his back, apparently completely full of Luvdisc. Cobalt hasn’t moved at all from her position right above you. Over the connection with Geist, you feel a dormancy. You think he’s sleeping.

Turning back to Darius, you sigh. “I’m skeptical about Bryant. Blackburn doesn’t have a very high opinion of him and the guy might have the same kind of problem as Katrina, that is, being a bad team player. As for testing, I say we do it in three parts. We assess each candidate's skills, then a mock battle, both with the Trainers and their Pokemon. Finally, a teamwork exercise of some sort to make sure they can actually work together. Of course, this depends on whether or not Katherine takes up our offer.”

Darius nods. “I don’t particularly care about Bryant one way or another. I can see about setting up a teamwork exercise or two in the afternoon once we let Strom and Clarke know to meet us.”

He then looks behind you, before nodding. “It looks like the Major is here to see you.”

You twist around and see the Major walk up to your table. He’s still clad in that black armor and carrying his greatsword on his back. Cobalt turns to regard him briefly before resuming her position above your head. The Major sits down across from you, next to Darius who shifts to accommodate him.

“Hello Victor, Darius.” He greets you two. “How’d your recruitment efforts go?

I have...prospects and I'm going to put them through their paces to see if they can handle it. Im feeling..optimistic about this.
>>
>>38121450
"We're still working on it, sir. But I think we've lined up some promising candidates. We'll be doing some trials and exercises tomorrow to help us narrow down our selections."
>>
>>38121450
>We're holding a few trials tomorrow to see who works best together.
Give him the time and place in case he wants to have a hand in choosing our team. His veteran input could be extremely valuable. Let him know so.

"Things are going well, sir. We've found some really promising potential recruits. We're going to set up some trials tomorrow to see them in action. Except Joseph Bryant. We hate that guy, apparently."
>>
>>38121450
"Going well, I have another two that have accepted and one more that is considering. We're working on setting up a test tomorrow to demonstrate they're individual skills and teamwork. I also have another meeting with Ivy on Saturday but I think it would be prudent to invite her along for tomorrow since she'll need to learn to work with them anyway. If you wanted you could supervise since we'll be working under you anyway."
>>
>>38121590
>Except Joseph Bryant. We hate that guy
not so much hate as feel he won't mesh well with the team from the get go. I still think Katrina will show up at the demonstration tomorrow when she see's Victor there
>>
>>38121698
Don't mind me, I'm just salty that we didn't even get to see my husbando.
>>
>>38121760
>husbando
>we never even met him
It's okay, your opinion meant nothing anyway.
>>
>>38121760
shouldn't have chosen so poorly then, sorry

"Things are going well, sir.” You reply. “I have two more Candidates that have accepted and one more that is considering. We're working on setting up a test tomorrow to demonstrate their individual skills and teamwork. Inviting Ivy is probably a good idea too. If you wanted you could supervise since we'll be working under you anyway."

Cyril’s eyebrows rise. “Two recruits in less than a day. You’ve been proactive. Good job. I’ll definitely be stopping by then. Who were your candidates?”

“Ryan Blackburn for a Scout and Stealth Operative, Katherine Clarke for Engineering, but she is still deliberating, and Lyn Strom also for Engineering and Tactics. Ivy Ravel was already chosen as the Squad Medic.” You reply.

Cyril nods, rubbing his chin. “Sounds like you’ve got a good team set up there. That’s excellent news. What time were you planning on having the trials?”

“Around one.” Darius rumbles. “I’ll have to grab some equipment and volunteers to set things up, but it should be doable.”

“Sounds good.” Cyril says. “I’ll have your candidates excused from any classes. I’ll be seeing you around then.”

He stands, nodding at the two of you before leaving.

[Thread End]

[It’s not where I wanted to end it but I’m damn tired. The Next thread will probably be on Friday but I since there’s a shitton of snow in my area, I may be able to get out of going to work tomorrow. If that’s the case, then I’ll run again then.]

[Next Thread will also start on the Morning of the Next Day, which is Tuesday, May 15th 2033 in game time. You'll be prepping for the trials]

[I’ll stick around to answer questions while I get ready for bed.]

I'm already in my bed, good night man, no questions from my part.

thanks for running!

my head's hitting the pillow as I type this, see you Friday Sleepless
>What pokemon did Ryan, Kathrine, and Lyn have again if you don't mind?
>How many days til graduation?
>Once we're in the field, will we be gone for a full year or will we be able to return to the Academy? Are there Sentinel Facilities in the wild?
>>
>>38122591
>Ryan Blackburn for a Scout and Stealth Operative, Katherine Clarke for Engineering, but she is still deliberating, and Lyn Strom also for Engineering and Tactics. Ivy Ravel was already chosen as the Squad Medic.
It sounds as if we could recruit all three.

Is that feasible? I thought Katherine and Lyn were in direct competition for their spot. I'd rather have both.
>>
>>38122811
Squads are 4-5 members so both probably isn't doable, I still say keeping Kathrine on as an unofficial Engineer to keep us up to snuff and provide gadgets and prototypes to field test would be the best solution
>>
>>38122808

Ryan has a Braviary, Pidgeot and an Emolga.

Joseph has two female Pyroars and a Talonflame.

Katherine has a Magneton and an Ampharos.

Lyn has a Jolteon and a Luxray.

There are now Six days to Graduation, which is on Sunday, May 20th.

Once you've graduated you'll be given assignments by HQ through your CO. It's up to you to choose which missions to carry out. Some missions can take a few days. Others might take over a year. It depends on the complexity of the mission and the location as you'll likely be required to travel all over the world.

>>38122811

I assumed that after the tests you would make a final choice.

what kind of boosts would one get from bonding to a normal type pokemon?
>>
>>38123205

Answered this one before but Normal types can bond with pretty much Any Trainer and provide a boost to their abilities.

There are no Dual Normal types though.
