The night passed in but a mere moment, disappearing in a blink of an eye. Is that why you feel like you haven't slept at all? Regardless, you can feel that the wagon is moving, wheels rattling on the worn down roads. Sandra, your ever-faithful vassal, and Yuna, your self-declared servant, are taking up the little space you have on your side of the wagon.

It's really cramped – Yuna has a grasp on your arm and won't let go, while Sandra is blocking your exit. Worming your way out of her reach, you step over Yuna and inch around Sandra. You're finally free to some space. You sneak a peek outside through the blinds. The light from the rising sun bleeds through the cracks, spilling inside with a warm color.

A city lays adjacent to the sun on the horizon. Buildings new and old decorate the outskirts of the place. It has a rather homely feel to it, rising from the ashes of the old Arkad. The sight is peaceful. Relatively speaking.

The light from the outside wake your vassal and servant, stirring them from their slumber. Yuna is surprisingly the first one to get up. “Mmmmrrrh, good morning,” she yawns, stumbling towards you. Her attempts to walk fail horribly, tripping over herself. You make an effort to catch her, but she dives straight into your arms, trapping you in her embrace.

“Good morning to you too,” you murmur softly, setting her aside. Yuna is surprisingly cooperative, not immediately clamoring for your attention.

Sandra rises from her rest, surveying her surroundings. Her hair is wild and disheveled, sticking out in all directions.

“Sandra,” you call out to her in no more than a whisper. “You have bed hair.”

“H-Hey!” She wakes from her stupor and straightens herself, smoothing out her hair as best as she can. Yuna playfully joins in but is immediately smacked away by your embarrassed vassal. Sandra makes a valiant effort to untangle her hair, but eventually admits defeat. You couldn't help but watch the entire time. Sandra glares at you. “Stop it with that giggly smile of yours.”

Yuna, now fully awake, asks, “Oh, oh! How close are we to the capital now?”

“We're already here, aren't we?” The three of you glance outside, looking past the blinds. The capital is closer than ever. The looming city close up is definitely humbling, even if it looks makeshift.
>>
The caravan stops at the gates of the capital. A hoard of people flood out from the wagons and transports, waiting for the gate to open. The guards grant them passage, opening the entrance.

“Alchemist!” A man cries to you. “You will not be forgotten for your care and mercy. Blessed be you.”

“Alchemist,” yells another. “Your short time with us has been an inspiration to us all. Be well, friend.”

“Alchemist.” A woman bows. “Grace to you.”

“Traveler,” the caravan leader nods from the crowd. “This is where we part ways.”

“May you walk safe, friend,” you reply, sending him off with a wave.

Sandra keeps quiet, waiting until the crowd dissipate through the gates of the city. When they are out of view, she stares at you perplexedly. “Alchemist?”

“It's nothing,” you smile bitterly.

From the distance, now that the crowd is gone, you can see a familiar man, conspicuous with a sword sheath tied to his waist. The sword itself is markedly absent. You approach, moving closer to get a better view. An accessory hangs from the sheath. A mask.

It's Rolan.

You decide to call for him. “Rolan,” you say once, lifting your hand up in the air to get his attention. But he doesn't respond. “Rolan!” You call again, raising your voice. This time, he turns, quizzically glancing around. The moment he sees you, his eyes widen, surprise striking through his face.

“You!” he shouts. “Va– erm.” Rolan cuts himself off, looking around guiltily. He motions for you to come over. You comply, ushering Sandra and Yuna along with you. Yuna immediately recognizes him and is about to say something, but your vassal slaps a hand on her mouth.

“It has been a while, Rolan.”

“So it has. How have you been... Vala?” The man pauses as he calls your name, creasing his eyebrows as he smiles.

“I have been better,” you wearily admit. Leaving your usual pleasantries out, you cut straight to the point and ask, “Is Arcadia doing well?”

“It's doing better than Arkad. With new infrastructure being built, we're accommodating and uniting the tired, hungry, and meek. The refugees and the runaways have a home, if they choose to accept it.”

“That is good. And Minerva?”

“I haven't seen her for some time. She's been busy in the capital while I've been... out here, keeping watch over the gates.” Rolan shrugs. “Our paths don't align.”

“I see.” A question lingers in the back of your mind. One you'll keep to yourself for now.

“So what about Anya?” Unfortunately, Yuna decides to speak your mind, whether you wanted her to or not.

Rolan completely freezes, looking down at his feet. “I don't know.”

“You don't know? What happened?” Yuna obliviously asks, caught up in her own curiosity.

“Regrettably, she went off on her own and refused to tell us anything,” he laments. “Anything after that is anyone's guess.”

“Oh,” you sigh. “Thanks anyway. Will you be staying here?”

Rolan nods. “It's my job.”

You decide to enter the city, taking in the sight of the capital from the inside. There are many wandering the streets aimlessly, unsure of where to go. Traders and travelers alike roam the streets, a low chatter humming throughout the area.

Yuna does a little twirl, grinning at you and Sandra. “Reminds me of the old Arkad. The energy and excitement of people coming and going, hurrying to their next destination.”

“Nostalgia?” Sandra asks.

“Not really. I don't really miss it. I didn't like being a slave too much.” Yuna shrugs.

“So, what's the difference now?”

“I'm a servant!” whines Yuna. “It's different! There are a lot more benefits to it.” She smiles genuinely, a rare tranquility in her eyes. “After all, who would want to be forced to do anything? I can do things based on whether I want to or not. And that's good enough.”

“I suppose it is.” Sandra concedes, nodding slowly.

As you pass through the streets, you can hear a mob of people, all muttering words of dismay and irritation. A tower-like building casts a shadow under these people, apparently waiting in line for something. A man looks especially displeased, waiting at the end of the line.

“Excuse me, but what exactly is happening here?” you ask the man.
>>
>>38088741
He grumbles, “We've been waiting here for hours to receive food and supply for our families, but the line has yet to move. I was told to come here to find safety, but we're all here starving. I've to feed my family. We all do. Yet, the line hasn't budged.”

Sandra approaches him and asks, “Are you all refugees?”

The man shakes his head. “Some of us are. Some of us aren't. That's just how it is.”

“Then,” Yuna interjects. “Do you believe you deserve this food more than anyone else in this line?”

“No,” he resolutely denies the claim. “But the line isn't moving, so nobody is getting any – it's the worst possible outcome.”

“Do you know why?” You question him.

“I do not,” he sighs.

>If people will the line to move, then so shall it move.

“Alright then, thank you for your time.” It's still too early for you to take action. You're not exactly sure what the problem is, so you shouldn't meddle too much without more information.

“Are you going to help us?” The man in the line expectantly asks.

“In a sense. I'll be investigating the case.”

“So, what are you going to do?” Sandra eyes you warily.

Hmm. “Well. First thing's first, we gotta figure out what's freezing the line.”

Moving forward through the line, you're faced with many complaints of cutting. You have to constantly insist that you're here to investigate and not get ahead in line. The trip to the front of the tower takes you about 10 minutes, if only because you were hindered by the people waiting. The entrance to the tower is even more packed with people, forcing you to squabble through the crowd. You keep a close eye on Sandra and Yuna – who knows where they might disappear to in the mob.

After securing your followers, you head over to where the line ends and a huge mob begins. A line of guards are position in front of the entrance. The mob seems disinterested in getting close, idle in their activity.

You approach the guards, making deliberate eye contact with one. He does not seem threatened – fortunate for you.

“Do you need something?” The guard at the front acknowledges you.

“I'm just investigating why the line's been held up. There's been some complaints.”

He rubs the bridge of his nose. “As I'm well-notified. But who might you be?”

Hmmm.

“The alchemist,” you reply. Not immediately wanting to expose yourself as Vala, you throw out the first title that comes to mind – the one that the people of the caravans bestowed upon you.

“The Alchemist!” cries the guard, immediately prostrating himself before you. “My father tells of you. Did you not cure those afflicted with noxious disease in the caravans? My sister was one among the many you've healed. Words do not mean enough for the happiness you created.”

Well. That worked out better than expected. “I don't deserve such praise.” You brush off his compliments. “I do my work as you do yours.”

“Great Alchemist, do you have the power the aid us?” The man asks, bowing lower to the ground. The other guards hush and whisper to the man to stand up.

“Certainly, I will aid,” you declare. “I only need to know how.”

“This is a righteous day,” Yuna beams, swinging her arms around in excitement.

A second guard points to Sandra and Yuna. “And they are?”

Yuna answers for you. “His most beloved companions!”

“My followers,” you clarify.

“Artras,” the second guard calls to the first. “Do you really feel it to be necessary to explain the situation to such a suspicious character?”

“I have absolute faith if the man says he can,” the guard, Artas, states firmly. “My resolve be tested, I will retire from duty should he fail.”

“I am skeptical.” The second guard sighs, shaking his head. Then, jerking his head to the entrance of the tower, he motions for you and your followers. “But you are free to enter. Artras, please escort the man and his aides.”

Artras does so, leading the way. The tower has many doors and pathways, but the guard only goes straight. Ahead is a large door, heavy but unlocked. “The problem was that the food reserves are low. It isn't empty, but there is not enough to feed all those waiting in line outside. By our best judgment, we decided to stall for time by holding the queue. I ask, Alchemist, do you know of a solution?”

You close your eyes. “I may.”

To fix this problem we should give them the means to sustain themselves.

There are many problems, but this is one that you can solve. For now. You open the door, peering over the preserved food storage. If the issue is that people are waiting to get food and ration, then the most obvious solution is to provide. Yet how long does a solution like that last? Clearly never long enough. But that'll do, if only for this very moment in time. Closing the door, you prepare yourself.

You breathe. The Wish Current flows through your will, a gold light personifying the desires of those who believe. You are imbued with a divine force, your spirit swaying to the roar of the Current. The entire floor housing the food storage shakes and tremors, responding to your power. In moments, the vault is almost overflowing, salted meats meeting dried fruit and bread.

The door whines and creaks, responding to the sudden lack of space in the vault. You open the door, practically swimming out from the rations. Artras is taken aback, stunned in disbelief.

“Will this work?” you ask.

“...Wh– err, um.” He swallows the lump in his throat. “I believe so.”

From the entrance, you can hear the shouting of the other guard posted in the entrance. “Blasted alchemist! You did well in reviving our infertile soil as well as our crops, but you lack foresight! What about the horde of people waiting for the food they want NOW? We asked for food, not crops!” The man's muffled shouting stops the moment he kicks open the door to the vault.

Sandra clears her throat, pulling you out of the quickly-piling food stash. “As you were saying, guard?” She eyes him with a hidden glee.

Yuna says nothing but is wearing the biggest smile you have ever seen.

“...This blunder, I will take to the grave,” the guard corrects himself, kneeling in apology.

You can only shrug.

“Great Alchemist,” Artras bows. “You have certainly earned your merit. My father and I are eternally indebted.”

“Then repay me in the form of happiness. Make sure the capital can tend to such prosperous fields and food will be plentiful for this city. Spread this happiness to others.”

“Peace be with you, Alchemist,” Artras salutes.

“Our job is done here~” Yuna gleefully bounces up and down.

“'Our' job? All you and I did was watch.” Sandra glares at Yuna, but your servant doesn't really seem to mind. Or notice.

You leave with your followers before the crowd goes wild when the doors to the tower open.

But where to now? You have little reason to stay in the capital. Still. You're here to... to... do what exactly? You're not entirely sure.

You could also visit Lymarck and check up on Arden and Lillian. You haven't seen them for a while.

There isn't much reason in staying. Compared to Arkad, the capital seems... rather untroubled. Despite the problem with the distribution of rations, its residents did not immediately riot. You could call that improvement.

You'll keep your journey moving onward.

Yuna latches onto your side, tugging at your arm. “Where are we going now?”

“Wherever the path takes us, I guess. We'll keep going through Arcadia.”

Sandra squints. “Well. That's... particularly vague.”

“C'mon, Sandra, where's your sense of adventure?”

“I never recalled asking to have an adventure.”

The path to the second gate of the capital meandered with more twists and turns around street corners than necessary. You're unsure why this is the case, but nevertheless it is irritating. You suppose there is some reason human architecture has to be so needlessly complicated, but you personally can't find its merit.

“You know, there is something I don't understand,” Yuna wonders, making conversation during your quest to find the gate.

“What is it?” you ask, grateful for some conversation to take your mind off of the winding roads.

“Why was the other guard-man so angry that you planted crops? Isn't that good?” Yuna puts her index finger to her lip, slightly chewing on it. “I don't get it.”

“Because it didn't solve the problem at hand,” Sandra answers, crossing her arms.

Yuna returns with a confused stare. “But why would that make him mad? Didn't he say that he didn't believe Master?”

Sandra shakes her head. “False hopes quickly change to anger. It's like breaking a promise.”

“It's the responsibility I have to bear if I fail. It's part of being a god.”

Yuna rubs your shoulders from behind. “Must be tough!”

“...I suppose.”

The trail outside is rather bleak. With the occasional wagon passing by, there isn't much activity to keep note of. You were unable to catch a ride in a wagon, so it takes a good portion of the morning and noon to get to a small town. The place is tranquil, seemingly filled with more crops than people.

A small band of three people are talking in front of the town, discussing something with avid voices.

A younger man scratches his chin. “Do you really think so?”

“I know so. It wouldn't make any sense, otherwise.” A girl snaps her fingers, apparently confident in her claim.

A smaller child squeaks, “Yeah, but–”

“Just think about it, numbskull! Things just don't magically fix itself. That's just common sense.”

“But wouldn't common sense imply–”

The girl holds her palm to the man's face. “Shh.” She takes a quick stride towards you. “Hey! You there! Are you religious?”

“Uh,” you stammer, suddenly joining in on the conversation. “I'd like to think I'm fairly spiritual.”

“Great. What do you think about whatever happened in the Halcyon incident?”

“It was change, whether that be good or bad. The incident changed everything about Arkad – its very people, its rule, its mindset. And everything that followed was the aftereffects of such change.”

“Exactly! The work of a god! One that dreamed of flipping the corrupted hand of Arkad on its back! Through hardship or non-hardship, it forced change! And guess what: we move on. Who cares when Arcadia becomes the most reliable nation in the land?”

“Um,” the man starts. “I'm pretty sure people will still care.”

He is completely ignored. “The thing is, people will still suffer whether some god is grateful enough to help or not. So when people say, 'Curse Vala,' feh! Praise Vala! I'm a heretic! A swine!”

The young man and his friend hush the girl. “Don't say that! You might get in trouble!”

“Yeah?” The loud-mouthed girl blabs. “I'm not in the capital anymore. Who's going to stop me? I'm entitled to my own opinion. I think slavery's bad. I despise green apples. Again, who's going to stop me? What Vala did was right.”

“I think what he did was right, too.” Yuna, in an unexpectedly tender voice, makes herself heard albeit softly.

Sandra, in no more than a murmur, voices herself. “...I do too.”

The girl sets her sights on you. “Then what about you?”

Well, this is troubling. “I don't think I have the right to say.”

The girl is absolutely indignant. “Well, why's that?”

Slavery ensured that all the poorest had a place to sleep and food to eat, but it also opened the door to thoughtless abuse and it de-valued the worth of the human soul. It'll be harder this way, certainly, but people are going to be left behind either way. History will be the judge.

You should show her why. From your right hand, you produce a green apple. The girl immediately recoils in disgust. Her disgust immediately turns to vague interest and then surprise. “Perchance, do you know of the problems behind the rations in the capital?”

She narrows her eyes. Squinting suspiciously at you. “Yeah. What about it?”

You roll the apple around your hand, taking a bite out of it. It's sour. As expected. “Today, the lines stopped completely still. It turns out that there were not enough rations to feed every person waiting. So I gave them food and got crops planted.”

The once loud-mouthed girl is now silent, taking in every word.

“I thought I'd wander around. Help those in need. I thought I did good once. And even if I did, I am biased to my own action or inaction.” You take another bite from the apple. The sourness isn't so bad the second time. “So I won't say. At the time, I thought it to be the right way. Now I must ask, what would you have done?”

The girl takes a minute to absorb everything in. She breathes in and out slowly. Then, with a bright grin, she chuckles. “I would have done the same thing!”

You allow yourself a smile. “Thank you.”

“I was right about you, Vala,” she declares pridefully. She also takes the time to sneak glances at her acquaintances, who seem outright embarrassed.

“You're entitled to your opinion,” you reply. “But there's one thing you're right about.”

“What is that?”

Placing the apple core in the dirt, you shake your head. “Green apples are horrible.”

Sandra looks straight at you with the most disappointed look she can muster. “You should know that the great Vala is decidedly an idiot.”

Yuna springs forward, throwing out a sudden question to the girl. “So what's your name, champ?”

She sports a toothy grin. “Name's Lisette. Nice to meetcha.”

That's the thread for tonight. Next thread will most likely be on Thursday. I have deadlines to meet, so we shall see.

I vote Lisette for third Vassel

It was completely right and I don't regret this.

I like Lisette. Seems like she'll be another nice counterweight to Sandra's constant downer attitude.
>>
>>38095463
getting reaffirmations is merely for self-justification and arrogance. I'm saying this as the one who suggested it.
>>
>>38095503
What would you have done?
>>
>>38095361
You can't just simply make someone a Vassal. It takes time and... a lot of other things.
>>
>>38095551
>a lot of other things
We did Sandra our vassal instantly.
>>
>>38095551
then tell me those things and I WILL MAKE IT WORK, pls
>>
>>38095528
Asked ALL of them BEFORE revealing ourselves. Get them to seriously consider things from their perspective. I don't expect them to reach a "right" answer, but to bring to light the issues that are important to them.

I think he went into it last thread somewhere.
>>

Vassals are "created" when a family establishes a shrine and gives a son or daughter to the god. They consummate and birth an offspring, which then becomes the first vassal. After that, it is the vassal's offspring that succeeds them.
>>
>>38095808
Basically we gotta impregnate a human to get a vassal, what if we fuck, say, Anya, does she give birth to a deity?
>>
>>38095808
what about Yuna, she's a vassal right? Or is she just a servant since we bought/freed her when she was a slave
>>
>>38095808
so we need to have Lisette's parents make a shrine and offer her to Vala, done.
>>
>>38095850
Deities are not birthed by natural cause. They are created via Wish Current.

>>38095858
She's not even a servant. She's a self-appointed one.

>>38095903
Even then, it would be Lisette's son or daughter that would be the vassal, not herself.
>>
>>38095923
So deites can't give brith?
>>
>>38095923
so, uhh, what's with throwing all these ladies at Vala?
>>
>>38095923
What does happen when dieties mate then?
>>
>>38095923
>Even then, it would be Lisette's son or daughter that would be the vassal, not herself.
>>
>>38095923
can we appoint Yuna as a servant?
>>
>>38095923
so if we convince Lisette to build a shrine at her house, then any children conceived there afterwards would be Vassals?

Nope.

>>38095988
I've thrown many things at Vala.

>>38096021
Best left to your own imagination.
>mate
I don't know if this is the appropriate word though.

>>38096025
see image

>>38096041
You could, if you push for it. It's not a very important aspect of the quest. Unless everyone thinks it is. Then it is.

>>38096058
After the first child, it is custom to marry into another human outside of the family. This is also the reason why many later vassals do not have deity-like traits.
>>
>>38096147
>Nope.
How can't they? We just need a "miracle" don't we?

>>
>>38096147
i think the deciding factor would be if "official" servants get anything out of it, if she's just gonna be the same as before then people may not want to put the work in to make it happen
>>
>>38096194
I'm not really interested in making it happen. Just curious about the process.

You could probably list her in"persons under Vala's name" if you ever needed such a list.
>>
>>38096267
she'll either be happy with how things are now or ask Vala to do it officially one day, cross that bridge when we get to it and all that
>>
Honest as much as we want to take Lisette home there's the matter of what she wants to do; she might rather stick with her friends and do whatever.
>>
>>38096363
we could always ask if she'd show us around since we're just kinda wondering the country, then let her make the choice herself later.
