October 10, UC 0084.

“Not bad,” you congratulate Rossweisse as she steps back from Haman, practice sword still firmly in her hand. You decided this morning to see how well your pilots' melee skills have held up since switching to high-speed transformable machines, and took over one of the Nagato's gyms for a little sparring practice. Regular crewmembers give you a wide berth, unused to practice swords moving so quickly and precisely that all they could follow were the sounds of blade against blade. “You've both improved a lot.”

“Thanks,” Rosse mutters. “Still not as good as Haman.”

“I'm a Zeon Admiral's daughter,” Haman replies, running a hand through her sweaty red hair. “I had fine tutors for dancing, dueling, cooking. It was expected of me. We can work on your footwork later if you like.”

“Of course,” Rossweisse nods with a smile. “I can't say no to an offer like that.”

“I almost feel sorry for Titans,” Carya sighs. “They don't stand a chance, really. Not in a fair fight.”

“They've never fought fair,” Catrina reminds her. “I don't expect them to suddenly start... not now, not ever.”

“Hey, least we have a trick of our own now,” you point out. “The biosensor seemed promising when I felt it over the weekend.”

“I'm not sure I like it,” Carya admits. “It's a powerful tool, I'll grant you that. But it feels unnerving... like someone's watching us.”

>Your call, Carya. Use it or we'll lose it, whatever works for you.
>At least take it for a spin in combat before ditching it.

You can't say you felt the same way the sisters did about the biosensor, but who knows? It's an untested technology meant for a poorly-understood bunch of psychics.

"I can't say what to expect," you reply. "Mental commands are one thing, but getting feedback from the machine itself? Way I see it, we should at least give it a chance in combat before writing it off."

Carya nods. "I agree, really. It's just it makes me nervous, and I don't know why. And that bothers me."

"Do either of you feel that way too?" you ask Haman and Rossweisse. Haman shakes her head, but Rosse fidgets uncomfortably.

"Sort of," she admits. "I feel like I'm not alone in the cockpit."

"It could just be from feedback," Haman frowns. "You think Audrey should keep an eye on it?"

>Yes, and I think we should only engage the biosensors when absolutely necessary. Just to be safe.

"Two eyes," you agree, "as often as I can afford to spare her. But I don't think we should let our misgivings slow us down."

"Caution is good, hesitation is worse," Rosse nods. "Carya? Catrina? Would you agree?"

Catrina shrugs. "Sure. But if it turns into a problem we're shutting the damn thing down."

"Of course," you agree. "But until then, we proceed as we otherwise would."

After a few more minutes of sparring between yourself and the sisters, you hear someone call your name from across the gym.

"Commander!" Reiko greets you as she finally picks her way through the bystanders in order to reach you. "We just received news from the team that was sent to..."

"... Leipzig. Karen wants to see team leaders in her office in ten minutes."

"Team leaders only?" you muse. "Okay, then. I guess she's gotten tired of everyone packing in like sardines."

"Or it's intel she wants to keep quiet," Haman mutters. "Either way, not sure I like it."

"I'll let you all know what she says," you reassure your team. "We'll meet up in the officers' galley around noon."

When you arrive at Karen's office, you find that you were the last there. Emma and Ilia are seated on the comfy couch, angled in such a way that there's not enough space between them for you. Karen herself looks like she's been through the wringer.

"My, you're looking pretty green around the gills," you observe. "You okay?"

"Some kinda bug's been goin' around," she croaks, her normally husky voice showing the strain of having coughed all night long. You hadn't even realized she was sick.

A quick look over your shoulder confirms that there *is* space on the couch, in theory... but neither woman has budged.

"So it's just us so you don't risk getting the whole unit sick?" you ask.

Karen nods. "It's the danger of command," she grins.

After a few moments where you feel content to simply stand, Karen calls you out. "No need to stand at attention. Sit."

And so, somewhat reluctantly, you sit across from your sick Captain, carefully leaning back in the chair to seem nonchalant. All three women seem a little surprised you didn't force your way onto the couch, so that's a feeling that gratifies your inner twelve-year-old.

"So we heard from Cima about Leipzig?" you press.

Karen nods, retrieving a dataslate to read off of. "They confirmed it's both a newtype lab and a skunk works."

"So they're testing machines there," Emma muses. "Probably to do with newtype-use technologies."

"Is there anything strange about the place?" Ilia asks. "Anything that could suggest its specialty?"

Karen shakes her head. "The lab is on the edge of the Leipziger Auenwald, a nature reserve at the edge of the city limits. They believe the skunk works facilities are located in the forest, or underground beneath the forest."

"Sketchy," you observe. "Definitely seems like they're going to great lengths to keep whatever they've got hidden. And the newtype labs?"

"They seem to specialize in psychic phenomena," she tells you. "What sort of 'phenomena' isn't clear."

"So what do you want us to do with that information?" Emma asks. "It's not enough to stage a raid."

"We could use it as a starting point for further research," Ilia suggests.

Karen nods as she stifles a dry cough. "That seems the best thing to do," she growls.

Also, I'd rather put Emma and Ilia towards focusing and prepping their respective teams for a possible raid.

"I want to look at personnel assignment records, if we can get them," you tell her. "If we know who's working there, we may be able to tell what they're doing."

"This is odd," Ilia mutters under her breath as you pour over detailed personnel lists provided you by Reiko and ALICE's work an hour later. "No surgeons?"

"What do you mean?" you ask. "They're doing research with cyber-newtypes, aren't they?"

"It seems they aren't actually performing the surgeries there," Emma notes. "But look at this, under the names of the Doctors they do have."

"Two neurochemists?" you muse. "ALICE, get me all the data you can on these two."

After a moment, ALICE's avatar appears holding a pdf file. "I read Dr. Yahagi's research just now. Fascinating, he managed to isolate a chemical inhibitor that blocks chemical and electrical reactions associated with violent behavior. It nearly earned him a Nobel prize, but the committee expressed certain distaste over his use of test subjects."

"How so?" Ilia asks.

"Apparently he performed live clinical trials with mental patients without proper oversight."

"Sounds like a Titans scientist," you mutter. "Anything else?"

Emma nods. "The list of transfers mentions an unusually high incidence of psychiatric discharges among regular personnel: seven since Titans took over. No fatalities yet."

"What do you make of it, Commander?" Ilia asks you.

So, a Genius with a notable lack of ethics and a mastery of neurochemical reactions, a bunch of discharges due to psychiatric conditions and... Titans Newtype Research.

My bet? He's experimenting on how to make the subjects more docile, there are surgeons, but the data is classified and he is using methods so brutal the personnel involved are suffering from psychiatric problems stemming from guilt.

Alternatively, Dr. Yahagi os using base personnel as test subjects for his research.
Can we get any data on the engineering division? Maybe figure out if they're working on Psichoframe tech by searching for personnel with experience on nano-scale engineering or something?

You quickly have your team read over the payroll and service records of the discharged personnel. Titans was paying for it all, as suspected, and Catharine and Reiko respond in a few minutes from the bridge confirming that none of the records seem to have been falsified.

"ALICE," you ask, frowning hard at the limited data on the skunk works side of the operation, "tell me more about the engineers at Leipzig."

"There are a few Minosky particle physicists, and two aerospace engineers. No other specialists," ALICE replies, her little AI avatar reading over the image of a dataslate in front of her. "Strange."

"They probably aren't testing designs that were built in-house," you guess. "Which means they would have had to bring their machines in from other locations in secret."

Ilia nods in agreement. "And nothing stays secret forever... someone has to have noticed something."

After several minutes, you actually do notice a trend: recently the number of UFO sightings reported in the area around Leipzig has skyrocketed. All of them report a machine roughly fifty meters across, in the shape of a disk or saucer. It runs without lights, and seems at time to move so slowly that it should not be able to stay in the air.

"ALICE," you order, "overlay the locations of the reports onto a map."

ALICE works quickly to follow your order. There's a cluster near Leipzig, mostly along the river that runs through the city.

"Are there similar reports?" Emma presses.

ALICE works for a while longer, then displays a point outside Germany. Then another, and another. The sightings of a fifty-meter wide saucer trace their way all the way across Europe to the Black Sea then stop, resuming in Anatolia. They also disappear in the deserts of the Middle East. The sightings finally trace back to New Guinea, where there is a cluster of about thirty sightings around the EFF base there.

Ilia frowns. "When were these sightings?"

"I will add dates," ALICE offers. It becomes apparent that whatever this thing is came from the EFF base in Papua New Guinea.

"The reports there name it "Matabiri"," ALICE informs you, "named for a local swamp spirit."

"Huh. So it's some kind of advanced mobile weapon," you mutter.

Do we have timestamps or just a general estimation of when these sightings first were reported? We can get an idea at how gofast this thing is. When was the last sighting and do the sightings happen on a set, regular schedule or is it random? We can intercept it in transit to prevent it reinforcing the installation we strike or catch it on the ground and destroy it before it has a chance to launch.

"Can we get data on it?"

ALICE's image flickers momentarily. "Technical data on the "Matabiri" is not stored in the systems at Leipzig. Apologies. I would have to search the databases at the New Guinea facility."

"Take it slow," you order. "If you think you'll get caught, disconnect. Really, I'd just like to confirm or deny what I suspect."

"What do you suspect?" Emma asks skeptically. "And how can you suspect anything with such limited information?"

"It probably hovers with a similar Minovsky Craft system to that of the Apsalus line," you explain. "It probably also draws from the Big Zam, so it in all likelihood carries a massive cannon as its primary armament."

"Okay, good guesses," Emma admits.

"I'm not done," you tell her. "In all likelihood they've offset the massive power requirements by using missiles. Having a newtype pilot would allow them to mount psycommu-guided weapons: the missiles are anti-MS weapons, while the main cannon would be used for destroying ships and fortifications."

"Which explains why it would be transferred to the Leipzig institute," Ilia mutters, following your logic. "Not bad, Commander."

"We should inform Karen," Emma declares, rising to her feet.

I can get behind that, though for different reasons.
All I'm seeing is a big pile of Luna Titanium that can be used to build mobile suits.

At least Chris won't be left behind for long.

Our doghouse is a goddarn Jupitris helium tanker.

If we were able to fit in the Valkyrie AND the Val Varo in there, I'm sure we can do something about the new MA.

After taking a short break to enjoy lunch with your own team, you reassemble in the pilots' ready room. Absent are Apolly Bay and Roberto, leaving Team Two at half strength for now.

"So that's what we know about the base," Karen croaks. "Questions?"

"How are we getting there?" Haman asks.

"What sorts of other defenses are we expecting?" Carya adds.

Rossweisse nods. "I-Fields."

She's right, of course. With a machine that size and presumably that price tag it makes sense that it would be protected by an I-Field generator.

"We'll need to play this carefully," you tell your teams. "There are a lot of factors to account for and a LOT of unknowns..."

Although I'm tempted to utilize the Codex Domscartes maneuver 'Titanfall', my preference towards looting the gutted remains of said mobile weapon won out.

Technical question for you, KoH. Can the Gundams safely re-enter while carrying large ordnance like the psycho-mines?
>>
>>38073595
After consulting with your fellow pilots and officers, you agree that the Matabiri presents too significant a threat to any ship de-orbiting nearby. As such, you agree that using an orbital insertion with the ballute systems is the preferred means of assault, with your suits being recovered by the Valkyrie when your operation is complete.

Next comes another decision: this one falls entirely into your purview. Which teams are you taking with you? Team 2 is down to Emma's MKII and Christina's upgraded Kampfer, and the Val Varo is no use in atmosphere.

>Take Emma and Chris as part of your team
>Leave Emma and Chris with the Nagato as reserves.

Also,
>Stick Ilia in one of Roberto or Apolly's suits and sortie her with the Purus
>Have Ilia hold back in reserve with the Val Varo
>>
>>38073886
Rocks big enough to cause Damage would be visible and would probably cause more damage than necessary, if we can even get it to hit where we want.
Where's that one pic of the Administratum dressing down the guy who wanted to Exterminatus a planet via Very Large Rock and explaining why exactly it was a horrible idea? It's perfect for this.

Orbital insertion, followed by crippling the target's main gun is the best way to go about this. Then the Valkyrie can descend and get the remains.

A competent organization would include self destruct systems in all their experimental weapons.

Y'know, I just realized that in our current team set-up; Emma, Chris and Ilia can get saddled with one Puru apiece.
>>
>>38074581
After some careful deliberation, you decide that there are too many scenarios where the Val Varo mobile armor would be a liability. With that in mind and two machines available due to Apolly and Roberto being deployed to Japan, you arrange to have one of their machines readjusted for Ilia's use.

In addition, you decide that you want to keep Emma and Christina in reserve. Their unit is at reduced capacity, and it may well prove useful to have them ready as backup either in orbit or on the ground.

"Where do you want us to be, brother?" Marida asks you next.

Cynthia frowns. "Our funnels are hard to use on Earth, and our Tusche Schwarzes aren't designed to use psycho-missiles."

"But we've still got big beam guns!" Diana insists. "We can fight with those, can't we?"

Ilia looks to you, clearly unsure herself how to deploy the Puru sisters.

>Deploy them overlooking the base as fire support and overwatch.

They may not be able to defeat an I-Field, but the Purus can kill just about anything else and I-Fields are damn rare. Besides, if we play this right and the dice gods are on our side, we can neutralize the Matabiri before it can attack. The I-Field should only be on during combat, to reduce strain on the unit. We might be able to take it or its pilot out in the first attack.
>>
>>38075179
Dom's brain automatically translated the "oniichan" he heard from Marida.
Those anime club lunch breaks during his yotuh paid off.

That and the added closeness during that scene with Cynthia probably spilled over to her sisters. Newtype/sibling bonding and all that.
>>
>>38075201
We should equip them with regular MS bazookas and other kinetic weaponry, then.

The funnels already count as beam weapons, might as well be prepared for everything.

The way I see it...

>Disable the anti-ship cannon = Call down the Valkyrie
>Disable the missile launchers, I-Field still up = Call down Emma and Christina with long ranged, solid projectile dakka and tons of missiles
>Disable the I-Field = Bring the Purus to play

Let's see how it goes.

"Diana's right," you agree. "Your cannons would be good support for us. We may be able to lure that giant mobile armor out and let you hit it before its I-Field comes on."

Cynthia and Diana exchange excited looks, while Marida and Ilia simply nod in acceptance.

"I'll look after them," Ilia reassures you.

"So what weapon loadout do you want to bring?" Audrey asks you.

Carya shuts her eye and leans deeper into her seat. "Don't worry about us. I'll rig up something."

"Swapping out the funnels for psycho-missiles is a starter," you muse, "but I think our main weapons should be..."

If possible, I'd like the group to carry along some psycho-mines to drop off while they're still in free-fall as an improvised artillery strike before they land. It'd be a good way to clear the landing zone of enemies, at the least.

Haman raises an eyebrow. "You're taking explosives? I'm shocked."

"Thought I'd mix it up a little," you reply with a grin.

"That covers it, then," Karen concludes with a cough. "You have your marching orders, let's get to it."

Artesia might have something to remedy that. She's the crew's doctor after all.

And that's it for tonight, thanks for playing. Archives are up, and we'll resume with the drop on Leipzig next thread.

I'm still debating whether I'll run again tomorrow night, since there's a good chance I'll have a conflict in my schedule. Keep an eye on Twitter, and be aware that it may come an hour later if at all.

As for Kancolle, I've decided I do want to run another short quest with a different cast and different plot, set after the first one ended. That's not on the immediate horizon, but it'll happen eventually: likely taking up a Saturday or Sunday slot, since midweek quest runs from 10pm to 5 or 6am were slowly killing me.

I'll stick around for any questions or comments until I pass out.

Judging by your decision to wrap up within 10-12 threads, I reckon that it'd be enough to resolve the conflict with the Titans (with maybe Voight on the side), but I doubt it would be enough to extend up to Mars and Bernini.

Am I wrong in assuming that?
