You awaken to the sound of a woman shouting. At first the words aren't really distinct, muffled by your door. However, as you draw yourself fully into the waking world the noises draw together into coherent speech. It's Prema, you think, barking out orders to your other slaves. Seems she's hard at work getting everything ready for this evening.

You push yourself out of bed, Zahak must have gotten off the bed at some point over the course of the night to curl back up in your fire place. He seems quite content curled up on his pile of burning embers. You make your way over to a window and pull aside a curtain to peer outside. It seems to be fairly late, you'd guess it's after noon judging by the position of the sun. The fishermen have probably already come in and left with the noon tide.

You take a moment to pull on your boots and straighten your robes, washing off a few errant stains they've accumulated over the last few days. Fortunately they're just as luxurious as they were the first day you bought them. You're glad to know that by tomorrow your traveling clothes ought to be ready and you'll no longer need to worry about tearing your expensive robes/

When you step into the hallway, you're greeted by the sight of slaves busily rushing back and forth across the balcony, going about their business. Some seem to be doing some last minute tidying up, others are setting out various decorations. You note that where once statues of previous owners sat, there now sit vases filled to the brim with exotic flowers; roses, lavender, tulips, and the like. They don't grow particularly well in the Pidjatan climate, so only those florist who cultivate the flowers themselves carry them. They probably cost a pretty penny.

You hear a curious noise from downstairs, a strange sort of tapping sound. Like someone knocking on a door, except not quite. Curious, you wander downstairs to find the source of the noise. You nod in greeting to Prema, who bows low as you pass by. She seems to be giving some sort of etiquette lesson to those of your slaves who will be acting as servers throughout the course of the meal. It's all fairly basic, regarding how to properly pour wine, how to interpret various gestures, and other such things.

You pass through the foyer and into the kitchen to discover the source of the tapping noise to be three elven women chipping away at a massive block of ice. One woman is holding the ice still on top of the counter while another attacks it with a hammer and chisel, the third collects the chipped ice in a bucket before dumping it into a wooden vat. You imagine it will be used to cool pitchers of ice water and white wines, which are typically served chilled.

With a wave of your hand the block collapses into a collection of perfectly uniform cubes. The women jump back as the block collapses, but rather than let it cascade onto the floor you bring it all together and dump the ice cubes into the wooden vat all at once.

The women bow to you, voicing their gratitude. You dismiss them with a gesture and they rush off into the slave passages. Now that you've put an end to that infernal tapping, you can devote your attention to more important things.

But no, they're both Water vatis, no need for showers just for a bit of sweat.
Actually, it might be better to just socialize and get everyone up to speed on etiquette and shit in time for the party, if we don't plan on keeping most of our party a secret.
Except for Zahak, he's definitely staying a secret.

> Adventure time mother fucker.
stop being a bitch.
notice how you didn't mention the needle for out training.
It because it got a good result and that was at a glance alot more dangerous. There was a 100% chance of getting stabbed with that huge needle.
so stop being a fag.
with out risk/curiosity/stupidity. We would not be here.
>>
>>38062351
I wonder, would a spirit who we insulted severely and extensively be disappointed if we didn't open the book that would have affected us negatively, and then not tell us what the book does?
It sure seems likely!
Also, magical objets which give off signs of life are always a bad thin.
Why do you think it was sealed with a key in the possession of the Shah?
Maybe it's used to seal souls, and it's what was used to depower the cat spirit.
We just don't know.
>>
>>38062397
>a lot more dangerous
You're saying a needle aimed at a seat installed in a high-tech Rhynian facility that housed and trained soldiers and scientists is more dangerous than all those other things?
There was almost no chance of it being something negative, assuming it didn't malfunction.
Also, notice how only 1 of 7 risky things had a good outcome?
Regardless, what's done is done.
>>38062350
Let me guess, you voted for the mask?
>>
>>38062400
I really want to talk to the cat before we leave.
we can talk to him about the child.
see if we can do a small mission for him get on his good graces and earn more information about the void.
>>
>>38062457
Oh, actually, I guess I should add in the portal to Namek as well, that one had a neutral outcome in my opinion, so let's say 1.5 out of 8 risky things had a good outcome.
>>
>>38062476

Yes a needle that we had no idea what it did.
a needle pointed at your spine.
a needle that hasn't been used in at least 1000 years.
Yes I think that was dangerous.
was it a good choice ofcourse.
after the fact anyway.
but as far as we knew, it was a torture device.
>>
>>38062505

>>
>>38062504
I was not home or something at the time.
but was piss ed as fuck when I saw it.
I didn't vote to threaten a spirit that far as we knew was dealing on good faith.
but even if I am pissed, soma said he didn't really take it to heart.
so it shouldn't be to hard to mend fences.

Schedule anon here, updated the notes doc a bit with some suggested edits and such. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QZb__69OnvXiaTn2JFFc76boNhuYO7w2_LQn4Ex9J3E/edit#

I've also got an idea to help us with out sanity issue. In a way, being more insane then we've ever been might be helpful, at least, so far as this plan is concerned. We know the cat is fluent in Runic, and we know the ring reduces our sanity. We also know Spirits are just Void Entities that've adapted to living on Mundus

>>36341504
Nature of Spirits and Entities: Spirits, the Varistha believes, are merely void entities which have escaped that horrid realm and adapted to live in ours. That's why older spirits are so similar to creatures from the void, according to the Varistha.

And that Void Entities are capable of golem possession:

>>36519714
Sehzade's Notes, Void Entity Golem Possession: The Hiacians beat a retreat as void creatures spilled from the hole, slaughtering the Rhynian troops. Curiously, he states that the Rhynian golems were possessed by the strange spirits of the void, turning them against their masters. Eventually the hole closed itself, but it persisted for months according to the Varistha's writings.
SA's Notes: Void Entities and Spirits share a common baseline. Will the fucking cat be able to possess any golems we make as shells/servants? Or as Saboteurs?

Either way, we don't have a contract with the cat specifying he can't possess our golems. I'd like to propose that we enlist Fulvia into make a golem avatar for the cat to possess, in turn for him agreeing to "read" the runes on our ring and to not possess any other golems in the future. This will allow us to either engineer more potent devices using the "reinforce" rune, or simply a greater quantity or sanity reinforcing devices. Any objections lads?
>>
>>38061914
The issue was not meditating in the Void. The big problem was staying in the void and waiting for the sanity destroying monstrosity instead of, you know, going home.
>>
>>38062603
>>Speaking of cats any chance we can befriend the spirit cat?
>Chances were pretty high. Not so high anymore, but they're above zero.
This implies to me that the chance is more along the lines of 10% than 35%.
Although I wonder, would this friendship have been like a mortal friendship, Soma? Or just a follower relationship from his POV?
>>
>>38062660
Yeah, how about just developing Magnify(+1 vys) and learning the runes on the ring ourselves, instead of always taking shortcuts by bartering with spirits for runes?
Does that sound like such a huge loss for you guys?
I mean fuck, this has been a thing since getting the ring and we still haven't gotten around to it.
Learning the runes ourselves is better than trading for them, and we can meditate on the strings of reality to find out what they do if we don't know already.
Jesus, do I have to post my compilation again?
Also, why would he want a golem? And why would he make a deal with us if he can already possess whatever golem he wants? Why would we be able to make a golem if he himself can't, considering his runic knowledge is much bigger than ours?
I distinctively recall our deal being "can use whatever in this household" so him using our golem and taking it away from us breaks that rule, I think.
>>
>>38062680
Where are you pull g this shit from?
These are some random as fuck as numbers.
>>
>>38062792
Those numbers, as I said, are my estimations and feelings about it.
I state this right in the post itself, anon.
>>
>>38062190
The void meditation wasn't the big problem. The big problem was the amount of fuckers voting to stay and watch the big god thing that would destroy our minds with his mere presence.
>>
>>38062791
>we can meditate on the strings of reality to find out what they do if we don't know already.

>>
>>38062893

I personally don't think it did, but it's a possibility.
>>
>>38062887
>some minor bonus like that.
>+6 is actually pretty big bonus.
>>
>>38062791
My thinking is that we can create a special golem for him, made out precious materials or with more capabilities than a regular golem. Also, I didn't say that I wanted him to simply give us his knowledge of the runes directly, only for him to teach us how to read those runes. It'll be faster and more sure than spending one or two meditations sessions, things that can be interrupted or failed.

Also, checked the archives again. It just says that we own everything inside the house, including the magical artifacts. I don't know where you got the "he can't touch our other shit thing from."

>>37265676
The spirit's voice rumbles forth, the pillar beneath shaking subtly with each word. “I will allow you and yours free use of the facilities. That means the libraries, the rooms, this observatory, and the sea caves below. In addition to everything you find in them, be it magical or mundane. In exchange I require you to fulfill for me a task. Build a shrine in my honor at the entrance to the manse, and others wherever you travel. I will teach you the words you must inscribe upon their surface. Through this you will grow my power, and as my loyal servant yours as well.”
>>

>>
Who are we kidding? We all KNOW we wanted a taste of the child....everyone was so curious...Soma could tell.........we wanted it bad.
>>
>>38062893

Also why the fuck didn't people vote to spend vys to learn create when they were planing to meditate again straight afterwards anyway?

>>
Ok, could we agree on one thing: We don’t need Void meditation for simple metas. If we only need to pass a check of 20 there is no reason to risk anything for another bonus.

That is all I ask. Personally, I think it’s worth it for difficult metas, but fear the readers are too stupid to return once it gets dangerous.
>>
>>38062945
Considering that the golem would be inside the house, I fail to see how him taking control of it would keep to the terms of the deal.
Also, what do you fucking mean "teach us how to read them"? You don't want to spend a single meditation session on developing Magnify, which will get us more vys, and instead want to take a shortcut and trade for it, not getting vys?
Also, how the fuck do you expect Mik to make a better golem then a high ranking spirit?

You retreat from the kitchen, making your way once more through the dining hall and up the stairs to your bedroom. You find your room as you left it, Zahak still fast asleep. You cross the room to grab your cloak off your dresser, slinging it over one arm and carrying it with you as you make your way again through the estate. This time you take a right upon entering the foyer and pass through the ballroom and into the elaborate sitting area beyond.

There's a great spot right next to a lamp surrounded by pillows. You claim at as your own, dropping your cloak near-by and making yourself comfortable. You seem to be alone for now, which suits you just fine. Odd that you haven't seen any of your companions yet. A voice whispers at the back of your mind that they've probably abandoned you. After all, they've been plotting against you from the very beginning. You should probably just off them now before they can enact their vile schemes.

You ignore the voice, finding it a mild annoyance, and reach out to your companions via the brooches. {How is everyone? I trust you're all ready for the party tonight?}

Darzi is the one who responds. {I've taken them Skull Kid, Chryssa, and Profectus out to find suitable clothes for tonight. Mortia and I already have suitable attire and Fulvia can of course appear to be wearing whatever clothing she desires.}

Skull Kid contacts your privately. {Mik, listen. You've been a good friend. If I blow my brains out before getting back to the estate I want you to have my gauntlet.}

You scoff. {Come on, Thaddeus! Shopping isn't that bad. You've got to learn to enjoy it.} To the rest of the party you ask. {Who all is paying for this? So far as I'm aware I have most of Profectus' money and all of Skull Kid's and Chryssa's.}

If the spirit was capable, he'd have created one and would be fucking around town just fine by himself. Also, you seem to be laboring under the delusion that learning runes will gain us Vys. It doesn't. It gives us knowledge of runes. Also, String meditation only works for simple runes. Why would we waste a meditation session, which are becoming every more rare these days, instead of spending an hour with Fulvia to create a nifty body the cat can use to prowl around town and do stuff? Magnify will get us Vys, but we're not talking about whether or not we're learning modify, we're talking about runes, some of the hardest things to acquire knowledge of by ourselves, and whether or not to enlist the help of own of the most knowledgeable experts we have in close proximity. It's a literal no-brainer. I don't know why you're being so hostile.

Darzi is the one to respond. {They promised to pay me back, so I'm using my own funds. It's not like this will really put a dent in my share of the loot. When I get back, you can shell out what I'm owed from their shares and we can talk about what you saw.}

Chryssa's voice pushes through the connection. {What did he see? Did something happen?}

Profectus likewise voices concern. {Yeah, what's so important that we need to get the whole party together? Are we changing course or something?}

Darzi's response is simple. {Relax, relax. I'm sure Mik is fine. It will be better to discuss it in person.}

With that, the connection severs and you reach into your cloak to extract that mysterious tome you retrieved from the library upon first exploring the estate. You set it down quickly as that creeping, prickling sensation spreads across your palms, sitting up straight and examining the tome for a moment.

Since the locks have been undone, the chains which once bound the book closed hang loosely at its sides. The illustrations of flowers on the cover seem to glow faintly, as do the gems embedded in its surface. You count nine gems total, more than you've seen on any other artifact. You note with some concern that the book almost seems to drain the light from the room, the shadows seeming deeper and the light dimmer the longer it's kept out in the open.

You almost wish you had a pair of gloves, but sadly lack anything of the sort. Regardless you reach towards the tome hesitantly and pull open the cover. There is no great light show. Nothing world shattering happens. Spirits do not flood forth from the tome. Rather, you're met with a blank page. Running your fingers along the parchment you find it doesn't cause that same tingling sensation the cover of the book does, and as such you begin to flip from page to page.

You're roughly fifty pages in when you start flipping massive blocks of pages at a time, looking for any hint of text. A scrawl or a footnote. You reach the back cover without finding anything, but on the back of that last leaf of parchment you finally find a little scribbling of text in the corner of the page. It's in Old Samjan, that much is clear. So far as you're able to tell it reads:

“I peered deep into that void. Long I stood there wondering, fearing, doubting; dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.”

Well, we won't know if we don't ask, right? Golems are already self sufficient. It might just be mental projection.

Golems are pretty simple to make matey: >>32143440
Golem Upkeep, Permanency: Yes, the permanency effect essentially makes it self-sufficient. It allows it to gather vys from its surroundings like most living beings do. It would probably cost the upkeep of the golem as a one-time fee. So if you make a massive stone and metal golem, casting permanency on it would cost 10 vys.

>>35776906
Golem Creation: You'd use Earth/Metal/Water/Nature/Fire Magic to sculpt and shape its body, and then run leylines through it to carry vys to each of its limbs and generally just keep it functional. Then you'd animate it, and cast permanency. That would be the most basic of basic golems.

That last rune comment absolutely supports my side. If those runes are overly complex, our basic knowledge of runic simply won't suffice. That's why we should try trading with the cat.

Here's the thing, the runes aren't simple. For something as complex and all-encompassing as the mind, the rune has to be complex if the thematic rune=nature of object thing is any sign. It's at least an middle 35 DC. Furthermore, learning runes takes up valuable meditation sessions, something you haven't refuted. It's not something we can do easily, and there is no drawback to simply asking an expert to help us. Lastly, I never said anything about "give us a guide to learn all the runes ever." That's something you completely made up with no grounding.

Yes, please do assume things you have no idea, or concrete evidence about. Even if the "Mind" rune itself is complex, it doesn't mean the rest are too.
>only for him to teach us how to read those runes
This is either a technique to read all runes, or basically his knowledge of those specific runes.
I don't see how else you can imagine this.

So, it appears that a mortal, probably ancient Samjan, somehow had access to the void. How could he have "peered deep into that void" without having a CLOAK or figuring out how to do what we have done? Sounds like he could have been standing before a portal just like us.
>>
>>38063568
How do you make a portal to the void?
>>
>>38063568
>>38063594
He could've just poisoned the threads of reality, fucked up a Rhynian generator, or fucked up an Enchantment.
>>
>>38063527
Yes, those specific runes. The specific runes on our ring, and those runes alone. That's all I want to know, and what I'm currently imagining.

Do you seriously think that the value/symbol for the most infinitely complex biological computer in nature will be a simple rune like fire? Go up, to the first post, and check out the enchanting pastebin. It says that the DC for learning complex runes is 35. Exactly that. Now, think about every single time we've tried to learn runes, at the gate of the void. We won't get Vatis bonuses, so that's just enchanting and madness bonuses. Do you really want to waste a meditation session with a moderate chance of failure, when we can just strike a deal with the cat?
>>

I take issue with his language, clearly he wasn't too affected by what he saw if his prose didn't suffer much.
>>
>>38063483

A cordial relation with the cat can only benefit us. You on the other hand want to antagonize the eldritch horror that is our landlord just because of the butthurt of losing a pissing contest we started with him.

This entire mansion is bait put out by the cat just to attract someone like us...and maybe SPECIFICALLY us. I don't think we want to underestimate that concept in any dealings with him. Have we increased our value with him by making him a shrine and investing in our "rental"? Maybe...not sure how much goodwill we have at this point, I'm thinking not enough to give us any type of significant help with this book.

What's up with the captchas? Thought we were done with those?
>>
>>38063715
Given the 70% propensity of dice rolls hitting 16 and under, I don't want to take that chance. Furthermore, the longer we go without reinforcements, the greater the chance for unfortunate accidents. You flip once more through the pages, looking for any errant marks you might have missed. You find none. Frustrated you open the book to the center page, or roughly the center page. You can't really be certain. It's a page as blank as any other. You lay your hand flat against the surface of the page and begin to channel vys into the artifact. You're not really sure what you expected. The pages don't light up with text all of a sudden.

As you withdraw your hand you notice something odd. Where once the center of your palm would've rested, there now exist a small blot of ink. It's thick and black, as if someone spilled a dollop from the well onto the page. Before your very eyes a figure steps out, shrouded in black. Its face is skeletal, demarcated from the rest of its body by its lack of ink. It drifts across the page, the ink blot following behind it. Eventually it simply trails off the page.

You turn to the next page and find the figure waiting on the verso. Tentatively, you try speaking to it. “Hello, little guy. What are you?”

The figure raises one of its arms, ink rushing across the page to obey its will. Words begin to form at the top of the page, in Old Samjan you note. When the creature seems finished, the text reads: “Ninety and nine are content but for the hope of the world made new, but I was the hundreth determined to make my dreams come true.”

Quite the eloquent little ink blot, you must admit. You wonder if it was a poet in life. “How did you end up trapped within the pages of this book, little guy?”

Once more the ink begins to flow across the page. “Once upon a dreary midnight, I pondered the world whilst weak and weary. A figure came to me and began to fill my head with things it said. I became insane, and suffered long stretches of wretched sanity.”

Well, it didn't really answer your question. You've no doubt that the figure's insanity ultimately led to it being trapped inside but that's not really the story of how it happened.

We can't be held responsible for that, there's no reasonable way we could have know what would happen when a rhynian generator get's damaged.

Spice was THAT dangerous. The only reason it really was bad was because of entity. Without the entity it wouldn't have been so bad.

Cloak is great, ricky is great, without him we would be so fucking lost.

Bar wasn't that bad we just kinda panicked

Dragon priest was a case of curiosity killed the cat

Surya's gate is ditto

Child was almost ditto but Soma confirmed he wouldn't kill/seriously fuck us up on a random encounter roll so even if the child had walked out we would have been able to get out.

And the Cat was just us getting ahead of ourselves, forgetting that bargaining doesn't matter when your opponent can shitstomp you at the drop of a hat.

You swing the book shut. The parchment strikes together with a weighty thump which seems to echo strangely in the gloom of the sitting room. You pluck up the tome, its cover sending those creeping tendrils of numbness crawling up your arms. For an instant you believe your skin to be covered in vile insects, burrowing into your flesh. You're overcome by an urge to scratch at your arms, to dig out the bugs beneath your flesh. Fortunately the urge vanishes as you dump the tome into your cloak.

The darkness which had been encroaching upon you ever since you brought the tome into the open recedes, the room becoming once more warm and inviting. You absentmindedly scratch at your forearm as you lay back amidst the soft pillows, trying to relax. What you saw was fascinating, though concerning. You wonder if perhaps the figure trapped within the page may one day offer you some vital insight. Unfortunately, you've a party to prepare for. Now hardly seems an appropriate time.

You debate whether or not you ought to fish out another, far more mundane, book and enjoy your time before the party reading something more comprehensible, or perhaps if you ought to seek out one of your companions, or even retreat from the world in meditation. As you're pondering your options, you catch a glimpse of a striped cat's tail, orange against white. It vanishes around a corner into the ballroom.

It's because we want to know what the "strands" of the universe do. Like in this passage:

Strings of Reality: Next you go in search of the section of the network which corresponds to the basic make-up of the pipe on a metaphysical level. It's surprisingly easy to find. You seem to be able to 'feel' what any one collection of filaments represent. Reaching out, you grab hold of the thread which represents the pipe and rip it free, reality starting to rapidly unravel as a result. Quickly, you shove in the glowing lines constructed from the runes you drew in the gap where the pipe used to be.

We only needed to slip into a trance to do that, as well as weaken the veil of reality.

Pushing yourself to your feet you trail after the cat, slinging the cloak over one arm. You find that as you round the corner to enter the ballroom, the cat is just squeezing its way through the door into the foyer. You cross the room quickly and enter the foyer, only to see the cat slipping into the kitchen.

You sigh heavily. It's pretty clear how this is going to go. You'll always be just one step behind the cat. That in mind, you don't rush. You stroll leisurely into the kitchen, finding the cat slipping into the slave passages. Rather than rush to catch up, you take a moment to grab a ceramic cup and pour yourself a cup of coffee from the coffee press sitting abandoned on the counter. The coffee has gone cold, but you heat it up to the perfect temperature with just a touch of fire magic.

You take a long sip from your cup and savor the taste before resuming your chase. As you step into the slave passages, you see the cat vanishing around the next corner. As you reach the corner, he's disappearing up a flight of stairs. So it goes that you follow the cat on this little chase of yours through the slave passages, up to the second story, up to the third story, down a ladder, and through a crumbling archway into a wide open cave. The ceiling vanishes into the blackness above, and the floor the abyss below.

The cat is slipping into a tunnel across a narrow stone bridge which stretches across a vast canyon in front of you. You make your way carefully along the walkway and into the tunnel after the cat. You find yourself peering into a dark corridor, two eyes shining distantly from within the inky black which pervades the tunnel.

You take a long, obnoxiously loud sip from your coffee cup. As you lower the cup you call out to the cat. “So is all this really necessary? I'm just saying, you could've talked to me just fine in the sitting room. No need to lead me on this chase through the estate.”

The cat's voice rumbles forth from deep within the tunnel. “I wished to show you something, and that something happens to lie within this corridor. Now step closer, Mikhael. I'm sure you'll be quite surprised.”

You glare at where you think the spirit ought to lie in the tunnel, at those two glowing points of light. “This sounds suspiciously like you plan on having your way with me. You've even chosen a glorified dark alley. Give me one reason that I shouldn't just turn around and walk back to my estate.”

A rumbling sigh ushers forth. “I need your help, and I don't appreciate your insinuation that I'm nearly so crass. We descendants of the gods do not need to resort to such vulgar methods to continue our line.”

With a sigh, you light your hand on fire and hold it out in front of you. The flames do not burn your skin, they produce no heat. Yet at the same time they seem unable to cut through the darkness in front of you. Regardless you step forward, and as you step past the threshold you find the oppressive black lifts.

You find yourself face to face with a strange statue. Its head is angular, but featureless. Where its eyes should be there are merely depressions, veins of blue spreading from within. Its head is crowned by a massive set of horns, and suspended above its head seemingly by no natural means is a perfectly round, blue circle. It glows with an intense light. However, the feature which really grabs your attention is the line of golden runes stretching across the statues' torso. Before your very eyes its torso shifts from a solid stone construction to an ethereal portal revealing the night sky, except the constellations depicted are none you recognize.

The Cat sits passively next to the statue, cleaning itself. Its voice seems to come from everywhere simultaneously as it begins to speak. “This statue has sat here inert for hundreds of years, but last night the runes upon its surface began to glow. I as well feel different. It is as if an oppressive force weighs upon my mind. I wonder if perhaps you may have something to do with this.”

Nah, the herald that came before the child say he was once human.
>>
>>38067073
Well whatever he is now he sure aint mortal.
>>
>>38067125
>>38067073

He was once mortal but now is not, that doesn't mean he's necessarily a spirit, just something that can survive and act as an envoy of a Child of the Gods whilst in the Void. So as far as how powerful he is he could be likened to a spirt or other powerful void entity, but he may not have the same properties as one.
>>
>>38067125
Not being mortal doesn't automatically equate to being a spirit.
Spirits are creatures with divine cores.
Mortal cannot become them.
>>
>>38067125
Was that not clear enough for you? Being corrupted so far by the void could make you no longer human. Becoming a spirit is impossible by the word of god.
>>
>>38066832
>>38066862
I looked again and I didn't find any differences between the void meditations, so I think all of them were open. According to Varistha, he never in all his centuries encountered any open portal. I don't think this is a good sign. Possible explanations:
- the first time was a rare chance, now we always drift to the same gate because of some strange connection to it.
- the first time was a rare chance, the other times it was because we are in El-Amin and the border to the Void is weaker.
- that strange sect that tries to free Surya has something to do with it. They somehow know about the gates and open them. This would be bad, but I don't put it past Soma to have such a plot happen. The Child might be an independent party or part of the plot.
>>
Why is Surya so angry?

Is it because Pani is. Passive aggressive bitch and won't put out?
>>
>>38067216
>>38067212

Still its interesting to know that there is an apotheosis into something higher.
>>
>>38067288
So the child somehow detects the weakness in barrier between reality and the void caused by either the strange sect OR Mik and his master starting up their efforts to enchant things again...decides to come camp out and investigate what is going on in this here part of the void...sumpins up...

>>
You raise an eyebrow. “Why should it matter to you that some old statue has lit up all of a sudden? Seems innocuous enough. Rather nice in fact. Would make for a nice decoration in the foyer I think.”

The spirit's reply once more assaults you from every angle. “It is a matter of jurisdiction. Once, this statue was apart of my hegemony. I could do with it what I please. Now it exist outside of my control and another entity exerts its control over the statue. An entity I am unfamiliar with. I am curious as to what spirit is powerful enough to usurp my rule over an area without my knowledge.”

You take a sip from your cup before announcing as if it were the most natural thing in the world. “A Child has wandered into the area and taken up residence in the part of the void which corresponds to El-Amin. I can only assume that this statue depicts the Child, and once he was worshiped here.”

Silence greets you. Only the sound of your slurping down coffee echoes through the cavern within which you've come to reside. The Cat stares at you wide-eyed, tail swishing rapidly back and forth. Eventually you decide to break the silence. “So I opened that book, anything you can tell me about the man I found trapped inside?”

Rather than answer your question, the Cat responds incredulously. “Are you not concerned that one of the only beings in existence to have laid eyes upon the gods dwells within our metaphysical backyard?”

You shrug your shoulders. “Why would I be? I'll just avoid traversing the void for a while. Not exactly hard.” You really can't understand why this spirit is getting its panties in a bunch.

(1/2)
>>
>>38067607
Staying in the void causes random encouters, it doesn't matter how long he stays if the Child is right there at the Gate when he arrives.
>>
The Cat begins swishing its tail more rapidly. “You should be concerned because you are one of if not the only mortals to violate the Gods' command that no mortal should use the language of creation. One of the only entities in existence able to receive their orders and enforce their will has now arrived within the city in which you dwell.”

You shrug your shoulders. “I don't know, call me a madman. I can't seem to care. If the Child comes bursting into my estate shouting about retribution, maybe then I'll grow worried. Now about that book?”

The cat spirit falls silent, but eventually launches into an explanation. “It belonged to the previous owner. Before he died he enchanted it to hold within a piece of him. I was fond of the previous owner and hoped that perhaps by opening the book he might be released from his torment. Sadly, it seems I was wrong.”

Huh, that wasn't what you were expecting at all. You actually feel a brief twinge of guilt, though it's gone in an instant. You wonder if that means the book is some sort of botched phylactery.

You're about to ask the Cat another question, but find yourself alone in the chamber. How rude, to just abandon you alone with the creepy statue.

As Mik has been told, the concept of a phylactery is that it contains a piece of one's soul. Thus when the body is destroyed the soul can restore itself from the piece inside the phylactery. Mik isn't sure what a soul is supposed to do without a body.

>>38068039
They're the gods, I'm sure they can make a few exceptions.
We should also ask them to remove the entity, it's a win-win really, that way we don't have to go all the way to the pa'vala to rid of it, and they get to destroy an unholy abomination in their image..
>>
>>38068005
Well Soma did say that the child let us leave because presumably we were beneath its attention and therefore did not turn its baleful gaze upon us.
Could be here for any number of things honestly.
The cat spirit is probably just worried its got itself tied up with said mortal who is violating old laws.
>>
>>38068058
So, if we pulled the soul out of the book and crammed it into a golem, could the soul restore itself?
>>

On one hand, there is no point to bring attention to us, on the other, I don't think they actually care as long as we dont go full rhynian on the world. for the moment we only know very few rune and none that important (not the vys rune for example, wich would probably be able to mess with the void in some circumstance)
>>
>>38068125
No, that would be awfully tedious, we just have to speak with the child's envoy, and have the child hear our offer.
>>
>>38068089
I sincerely doubt they won't smite the hell out of us.
>>
>>38068168

I mean, yeah, maybe we shouldn't mention enchanting too much, though I still think we should speak to the child about the entity.

>As Mik has been told, the concept of a phylactery is that it contains a piece of one's soul. Thus when the body is destroyed the soul can restore itself from the piece inside the phylactery. Mik isn't sure what a soul is supposed to do without a body.

so if we bringed the book to the heart of surya, he would be able to fully regenerate? if a complete soul is stuck in the book, that could be a cool advisor. alternatively, it could be something to trade with the spirit.

(not that we should do it rigth now, because of the child, but if we move in the world to a point that correspond to a different coordinate of the void)

alternatively we could try water to heal the soul?
>>
It appears that something we have been doing with enchanting has caught the gods attention...just as I thought. If this scares the crap out of the spirit...I do not see how we can be so lackadaisical about it.

Warn our master to not go into the void for sure.

The book has a piece of someone's soul in it...the obvious hint from the spirit is that that person might be brought back..but they will need a body..a golem, for their soul to be installed in.
>>
>>38068292
Wherever did you get the idea that water magic could heal the soul?
>>

Nah, we just need to find it a body, I think that's all it needs to regen.

>>38068589
Do you honestly believe we can find that artifact when barely have a lead? It's in the deadliest motherfucking place in the world, barely anyone comes out of there alive.

>>
>>38068645
He won't do it for free anon.
That is if we convince him to even listen to us.
>>
>>38068635
I'm pretty sure Mik would kill to be immortal, though that's a point to be argued.
But, the guy seems like an experienced vatis, and as long as we put limits on the golem's body, he shouldn't be able to do much other than teach us.
>>
>>38068645
The Child raised our insanity without even looking at us.
>>
>>38068645
you know what would probably be the easiest way to remove it? Killing us.
Besides how the fuck would he remove it? getting close to him makes us insane. Also the void with a child in it is probably much much worse than a nasty magical desert.
>>
>>38068696
It's not for free, he gets to either destroy an abomination that mocks his parents, or subjugate a powerful being, it's really a win-win.
Convincing him to listen to us would probably just require telling his envoy what I said.
>>
>>38068711
Anon please stop. Please
>>
>>38068762
At the point of which you assume the intentions of the children of the gods you have no argument besides.
>>
>>38068711
The spirit who was friends with him hoped opening his book would get rid of him and release him from his torment. Why do you think putting him in a golem would be better?
>>
>>38068318
well earth magic can deteriorate it and metal renforce it (I'm not sure of the second) so I assumed water would do it's trick too? when we first discovered "soul vision" there was talk of experiment, but as the only subject at time was ourselves we didn't do it. we should try one day, because that seem useful if it work.
>>
>>38068537
Might be that was the initial explanation...but I can see Soma weaving this into the plot line seamlessly.
>>
>>38068731
>>38068738
He can probably talk to mortals without driving them insane if he wills it.
And he's a fucking child of the gods, he can probably just snap his fingers and have it removed if an artifact can do it. And if he can't he'll probably go ask the gods to do it.
>>
>>38068811
Being sealed inside a book, totally alone and unable to interact with the world sounds like it sucks. If he has a body, he'd be able to interact with surroundings, talk to his bud the cat.

Pa'valan Device, The Many Face God's Temple: The last few pages of notes on artifacts seem to detail recent rumors he heard. You find three pages dedicated to the supposed 'mind restoration artifact' in the Pa'vala. It's purported to be in the 'Temple of Dhatu, The Many Faced God'. You don't recall a Dhatu being in the Samjan pantheon, nor do you recall any god being dubbed 'The Many Faced God'. Surya would be the closest, as a shifting mass of limbs, never assuming the same form twice. However, you've never heard him referred to as Many Faced. If anything, his face is the only thing that remains relatively constant.
You find a short entry which seems fragmented, judging by the number of breaks in the script. A note in the margin remarks that it was found within an old tome inside the library. It reads “Dhatu, He of Many... seven mouths and sang the song which... destroy the corruption which plagued that... Praise! Praise to the Many Faced God! Praise to the Founder of Industry! Praise to the...”
You can't help but find the passage vaguely unsettling. It's followed by another, apparently from the same book according to another note. “Within His greatest temple: the Bahya!-” You find that terminology strange. Bahya, as far as you know, is a word which means “outer” or “outward”. Sometimes used to refer to the curtain wall of a fortress or the facade of a building. “-There lies a stone of crimson blood and jagged appearance. The barest touch is said to cleanse the mind of any influences, internal or external. To make the mind as pure as that of a child.”

We can cure him of his torment by healing his soul.

>>
>>38068936
He can't do much if we put him in a simple golem, remember that Fulvia's magic is determined by her body, not her gem.
>>
>>38068963
That's because her gem is an artificial soul.
>>
>>38068864
That's not much of a lead, we still don't know where it is.

>>38068934
There's no measures of "hugeness" between assumptions. It's completely an assumption, that's that, and one you're pushing onto a character you don't know.

>>
>>38068936
So, he is insane...so is Mik. I think the spirit has more reason to have him restored other than to release him from his torment. Apparently the tormented soul in the book is what makes Mik's hand go numb and depresses the light in the room when the book is opened.

We really need to bargain hard if we are going to bring that soul back out of the book...that spirit wants it bad for some reason. It will be worth a lot to him.

Still not sure if its a good idea though.
>>
>>38068902
It's more
>ITT: People overreact to everything and have unnecessarily long arguments over the slightest disagreement.
>>
>>38068988
>>38068998
Remember that vys is stored in the body, the soul merely produces and manipulates it, as long as his body can't store any significant amount of vys, he doesn't pose much of a danger.
>>
>>38068998
>>38068988
not that guy, but I think vys have to circulate into the body to be casted, not sure if an artificial body not specifically designed for it could do it.
>>
>>38068988
So? I'm not seeing where you're going with this. A spindly golem with small leylines that channel only enough energy to move won't allow him to channel vys like a grandmaster and kill hundreds.

>>38068988
And the soul in the book is only a fragment of soul shard. Even better, and more manageable.

Anon just listen.

Any other time if I was presented with the chance to save someone who had a piece of his soul trapped inside a book I would consider helping.

But stop and look at the facts.

This guy was corrupted by the void
Went increasingly insane
He was deemed too dangerous and had to be our down

I'm usually a very optimistic person but even I know as things are right now that currently seems like a very very bad idea.

If it was a different person, different circumstance than I would probably consider it.

The fact that he did it to himself only makes me even more skeptical.

Thank you for your time

>>
>>38069110
Plus the spirit who was his friend even wanted him not to come back to release him from his pain.
>>
>>38069110
>>38069129

That doesn't change the fact that this is only a botched fragment of a shard and offers us leverage over the damn cat. Also, that this fragment of a soul has not demonstrated an capacity to gather vys whatsoever. Just make it a simple body with basically .5/.5 Vys, and we'll be fine.
>>
You reach out to your Master via the brooches. {Master Karim, this is simply a precautionary measure but I urge you not to enchant anything or meditate upon reality for the next week or so. A Child of the Gods has wandered through this area of the void and it seems to be having adverse affects on spirits in the area. I caught a glimpse of it and felt my soul boiling away into the aether.}

His reply is swift. {Gods above, the minute I start to make progress something must come along and ruin my efforts. Very well, I'll abstain from experimenting for now. How can you tell this 'Child of the Gods' is still in the area? Is it really one of the Gods' children or is that merely some sort of moniker attributed to it?}

{So far as I'm aware, it is a literal child of the gods. Granted the gods supposedly do not reproduce in the same faction we mortals do. Rather they seem to merely break off a piece of themselves which then goes on to mature into an entity all its own. The envoy I met titled the creature the Lord of the Void and it bore massive horns upon its head. It actually reminded me of a Child of Surya. Anyway, there is a shrine beneath my estate which seems to activate in the presence of the Child. If you ever want to check, feel free to swing by.}

>>38069169
How about we read the fucking book first before messing with its enchantment like a dumbass shitter, aye?
>>
>>38069110
Anon...just listen.

Was he put down? How did he put some portion or a large portion of his soul in a book? Did he realize he was going to die and this was his attempt at maybe coming back later?

Did someone/something force him to put his soul in the book?

We don't know the answers to a lot of questions. What we DO know is that the cat seems to value him and wants him released from torment...supposedly...or may even want him out of the book "alive" again...probably.

That would be very valuable to the spirit.

Fact.
>>
You start to wander out of the tunnel and back towards the entrance to the catacombs. Master Karim's voice once more pushes its way through the connection afforded to you by the brooches as you slip through the arched entry into the slave passages. {A child of the gods... if only there were some way to speak with such an entity. It could answer so many of those eternal questions we've pondered through the ages. Sadly I doubt that's practical if it boiled part of your soul away merely by the sight of it. Anyway, we can discuss this in person later. I trust you're soon to send a messenger to fetch myself and the rest of the guest. They've all arrived quite some time ago and it grows increasingly difficult to keep anyone from touching the food.}

{That's right, I'm making my way back into the estate to send out two messengers right now. You should expect them in perhaps a half hour or so.}

With that, the connection is severed. As you make your way towards the kitchen, where you originally entered the slave passages, you reach out to Darzi, Chryssa, Profectus, and Thaddeus. {How goes shopping? I'm about to send out messengers to fetch the guest, so I do hope you're on your way back.}

Darzi is the one to reply. {We're almost back. I really think we made some fine purchases today. You're going to love what Chryssa got for herself. It's a-}

Chrys interrupts. {It would not be proper to spoil a surprise. He will see it when he sees it.}

You get the vague sense that Darzi is disappointed. {Fine, fine. I'll keep my mouth shut for now then. Anyway, we'll be back in about fifteen minutes or so.}

That works out perfectly. The guest will arrive about an hour after you send out the messengers so they'll have plenty of time to get ready.

>>38069110
It's not our master's friend. It's just some poor shmuck who made his phylactery wrong, and I'm pretty sure that by torment he referred to being trapped in a book.
>>
You emerge from the tunnels in the kitchens and make your way into the dining room. You find Prema making a few final adjustments, mostly to minor things like the placement of cutlery. You clear your throat to get her attention and she whips about, surprised.

Bowing low, she apologizes. “I hadn't seen you there, Master. Shall I send out some of the servants to fetch the guest?”

You nod. “One to my Master's home, I trust you recall where it is. Another to my parent's home. It's the Abdul-Hakim family estate. Those of my family who are interested in attending ought to be gathered there already. It's three blocks north of the palace gates and a few houses to the west.”

She straightens up, standing stiffly. You'd almost say she was standing at attention. “Of course, sir. I'll send Stelios and a woman who was previously employed in the Noble's District.”

You dismiss her with a wave and she marches off, vanishing through an unseen doorway nested within the wall. It shuts with a quiet click behind her. You're left to your thoughts, for now.

>Wait until your companions return, it should take long.
>Find Mortia, see what she's up to.
>See if you can't find Fulvia.
