"Did you ever hear voices in your head?"

Again that question. What are they trying to say? And who is listening to them so closely that they can't be straightforward about it?

Baron of the Final Tide grosses his swords in front of him, in a guarding stance, and dashes against you.

The blades whistle slashing through the air, and you step backwards narrowly avoiding their screams. He immediately follows up with a low leg sweep that nearly knocks you off your feet...

...but you manage to shift your weight at the last moment and take a second step back, keeping your balance.

"This is getting annoying." Tia mumbles from the sidelines, clearly itching for a fight. It must be hard for her, to stand back without getting involved.

You can't really allow yourself to dismiss this odd riddle the Abyssals of the Tyrant of the Doomsday Machine are throwing at you the way she does, though.

They made it fairly clear: there's something they're trying to tell you. And they can't speak openly. That much, you understood. ...Or at least, you think.
And you need to figure it out before you reach their flying ship and end up face to face with the Deathlord herself.

Baron interrupts your train of thought with a deep lunge, which you manage to parry with your open palm. The blade sends off sparks as it clashes and slides against your skin, and you and the Dusk-caste clash against each other, shoulder to shoulder.

>Get some distance, keep up your guard, try and make him talk.
>Try and grab his swords and disarm him.
>Try to grab him in a wrestling hold, then throw him.
>Try to grab him in a wrestling hold, then crush him.
>Try to grab him in a wrestling hold, and maintain it.

>Who are we?
Maka, an exiled noble Exalted as a Zenith-caste Solar. She was in the western city of Tianna as a guest of queen Amata, an old friend. Abyssals are targeting the city for conquest, Lintha pirates have infiltrated it with spies and agents, and the Realm is probably planning to get rid of you.
But things are also looking up. You have gathered a lot of allies and friends, have a powerful Manse under construction, and are unifying Tianna in a great nation under your overwhelming charisma.
You just discovered the reason everyone seems to be so interested in Tianna: an enormous magical fortress lies buried underground, a relic of the First Age with enough firepower to destroy anything...

>Solar? Zenith? I don't know Exalted...
This quest is as newbie-friendly as possible, and I want it to work as a newbie's intro to Exalted. If you have ANY question, ask in thread. For the setting, google "1d4chan exalted".

>Archive?
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Solar%20Quest

>System?
Dicepool-like system. When performing an action, everyone rolls 1d10 when posting. the first X rolls are considered, where X is equal to attribute + ability. Yes, this means that the more people are posting, the stronger Maka is, up to a limit of her attribute + ability.

>XP?
Attributes cost [current score x5] xp. Abilities cost [current score x3] xp, except Zenith costing [(current score x3) -1]. Charms cost 10 xp, except for Zenith-based charms (related to charisma and physical/mental fortitude) which cost 8 xp. At the end of every "session" (thread) you will be presented with a list of possible acquisitions.

(You have [SOLAR HERO STYLE] and [ARMORED IN RIGHTEOUSNESS STANCE 2] on.
You're also at [ESSENCE: 2/6], I didn't have Photoshop with me to edit the sheet, sorry.)

Physical + Dawn = 5 3 5 5 1 1 3 7 10 = 3 succ.

You take two quick steps towards the Abyssal, but just as you start to build up momentum to lunge at him with both hands and grab his swords, he melts away from your grasp with a flowing movement.

You're left, for a moment, with no target. And then two swords slam into your stomach, point-first. They don't pierce your skin, but the force of the impact lifts you off your feet and forces the air out of your lungs.

You catch, with the corner of your eye, Tia standing up from her seat in the cart and barely forcing herself to not jump in the fray. Millian seems suitably horrified, while Reken is clearly enjoying the fight.

Then, the abyssal slams an axe kick that locks his heel onto your neck. Your vision rotates and ends on the ground as your head opens a small crater in the rocky, dry soil surrounding you.

"...you're hard." he grins, taking a step back as the dust settles and you slowly stand back up.

That hurt.

Physical + dawn = 9 2 2 2 8 10 6 1 10 = 6 succ.

You charge at the Abyssal, building up speed and kicking up sand and dirt behind you, then leap, straight up and ahead, bringing both legs up, heel first.

He lifts both blades, crossed, to parry your strike, and chains and black shadowy hands rise from his own shadow to intercept you as his castemark erupts in a bloody glow.

Your flying kick plunges through the chains and shadows, cutting into them like an arrow through flesh: cleanly through, but they do slow down your momentum.

You connect with his guard, and you see his heles digging two deep trenches in the ground as he is thrown back, absorbing the force of the strike.

Landing back on your feet, you both stand motionless in front of each other for a tense moment.

You do have the sudden realization that he's holding back. He's clearly more skilled than you in personal combat, but he's not interested in going full-power and defeating you.

Plus, he's nimble, fast and agile, but you don't know if he's actually strong enough to hurt you. This could be a standstill.

After facing for a handful of seconds, he surprises you making a quick gesture at you, and two long black chains shoot at you from inside his sleeve, each tipped with a jagged, wide-bladed knife.

You don't even try and parry them: the blades are slow and thrown without much force, and they bounce harmlessly against you.

...then the chains wrap around your arms and torso, suddenly moving of their own accord, like living snakes, and tug you towards him.

You ⇨ ⇩ ⇨ + P and slam you fist, hard, on the abyssal's chin as soon as he's in range.

Your fist, however, only grazes him, ripping through chains and clothes and a bit of skin as the Dusk waves around your uppercut and slides behind you.

Following his movement, loops of chains try and wrap around your arm, but the shockwave of your fist shatters them and scatters broken bits of black steel throughout the sky.

"I don't. Not yet." He whispers in your ear as he slides behind you and you turn around to chase him. "They don't have my name. They don't know me. Mistress kept me hidden."

You swing your fist around, and he ducks just below it. "Not gonna last long. They'll get to me, sooner or later. But for now... They don't Whisper to me. And they can't hear us."

"The dead titans at the heart of Death itself." He whispers, with icy breath, as you grab his neck and slam him through twenty centimeters of rocky ground.

"I heard about them." You whisper back, as you let him wrest itself free with a roundhouse kick to your arm. The impact is hard enough to numb it a bit. He backflips up on his feet and immediately shoulder-checks you ten meters back.

"They eat our names and take a hold on our souls." You hear as you both roll on the ground, crushing and shattering rocks where you go. "But I had lost mine before mistress gave me the Black Exaltation."

"Smart."

"It was an accident, but a lucky one." After a brief struggle, he elbows you in the back of the neck, grabs you across the waist from behind, and lifts you up. His swords, moving on their own accord on the chains, drill into both sides of your ribcage, pointed at the heart, spraying sparks all around.

"...What do they say?" You wonder, suspended in the moment of silence.

"Murder." He whispers back, before suplexing you. "Crush. Kill. Destroy. Burn everything down. Ruin Creation forever."

You're left on the ground, the air completely knocked out of you, your sides sore and black and blue.

You slowly stand up, batting rocks and pebbles and dust out of your dress and cracking your hurting neck left and right.

"...What does this have to do with me? I ain't no Abyssal and a still have my name-"

Baron catches you by surprise. You thought the fight was over now, but apparently no one told him. He grabs you by the ankle and lifts you entirely up off your feet, leaving you hanging for a second...

"You killed them."

"...It wasn't me." You manage to reply, caught by surprise by the sudden reversal of the entire world around you.

"They don't care." He slams you on the ground like a sledgehammer, holding you by the ankle, squeezing it almost to the breaking point.

"They remember you." Then he lifts you back up and hits you back on the other side, and does a bit of back-and-forth slamming you around.

"And they want you to destroy everything good around you and inside you, and then to die in a fire."

He lets you go when he finds Tia's Skullopener held straight in front of his throat. You roll on the ground, your head spinning.

You grab his hand and take his help to stand back up.

"That never happened." you reply, confidently. "I'm sorry, you're wasting your time here."

He bites his lower lip, letting your hand go. "...I see. There's no chance to see eye to eye on this, then."

"Afraid not." you shake your head, patting dust off you some more, walking back to the cart. Tia follows you closely. "This is all a huge waste of time for you all, sorry."

He looks down, sullen. "You're probably right."

"For me as well." you exchange glances with Millian, who is wearing a very worried expression. "Now, what do I have to do to get Regis back?"

"...at this point there's no reason for you to go and meet Tyrant, so he's useless to us. I guess I'll go and order him released." he also glances briefly at Millian. "I might be a pirate, but I'd like to think I'm not so low as to start a war while keeping a hostage I got in good faith."

>I want to meet Tyrant anyway. I need to tell her something.

"Do whatever you want, I'm tired of this charade." You reply, looking away from Millian. "There are no voices from beyond Death whispering to me. There is no curse." you mumble to yourself, staring into the distance as you climb back onto the cart.

"Maka...?" Millian is very distressed. You see she,s almost about to break and cry.

"Don't worry. Everything will be alright." you reassure her. "They're not going to hurt him."

"Maka." Tia whispers to you, but you lift a finger to silence her.

"...what about me?" Reken asks, worried.

"I'll free you when Regis gets back to Tianna."

She exchanges glances with Baron, and he nods before walking away, back towards the black airship.

"...seems fair." she mumbles.

You turn the cart around, taking care not to break a wheel in the broken landscape, and head back towards Tianna, sad that you had to waste so much time trying to find a solution where there was none, but still a bit relieved that you didn't waste as much time as the abyssals tried to take up.

For the entire trip back, Tia looks at you, frowning. It's an odd, pensive look, one that you don't often see on her.

>What? You mad at me or something?

After a whole five minutes, you pull the reins and stop the cart, unable to withstand Tia's inquisitive gaze any longer.

"Okay, what." You ask her, irritably, turning around to face her.

"You're overreacting." She notes peacefully.

"You're one to talk." You reply. "Since when have you been the voice of reason in this outfit?"

She scratches her head. "You're just acting weird."

"Back against the Lintha you were seriously thinking about cutting my legs off to keep me out of the fight." You remind her.

"I was being stupid back then." She admits. "You're being stupid right now."

You take a deep breath, trying to calm yourself. "I should go back home." You tell her.

She doesn't reply.

"Nothing will change anyway. Deathlords are Deathlords. It's a waste of time. It's not like I have a free choice. It's not like this entire crazy plan can work. It was all doomed to fail from the beginning."

"...Why are we going back?" This time it's Millian asking you.

"I don't have a choice." You reply.

Tia sighs loudly. You drop the reins and cross your arms. "Okay, what?" You ask her, like a challenge.

"I'm not going to marry a woman who gives up so easily." She says, looking at you straight in the eyes.

"Pfft." You try and suppress derisive laughter. "It's me. You're going to marry me anyway."

You immediately feel bad about saying that. You feel bad about THINKING that.

You pick up the reins and drive the cart back on the road towards the airship.

Tia says nothing, she just keeps looking at you, like she's studying your facial expression.

The silence gets embarrassingly long and empty.

You decide to break it after a while, when you reach the point where Baron was waiting for you. "...Tia, I-"

"You don't have to say anything." She interrupts you.

"But-"

"It's alright."

You drive the cart past the broken terrain. Time passes. You make good way, alone with your thoughts.

The panorama around you turns downright ghastly. You see skeletons marching in ordered files and ranks, under black and silver banners. You see the sky turning black and cloudy, and the soil grey and lifeless. And, in the distance, but growing bigger and bigger with every spin of your wheels, the black shadow of Tyrant's airship, resting atop a black, dry hill.

Finally, you reach it. Tents and flags are littered around in the orderly chaos of a silent, lifeless army camp.

On the side of the ship, a large steel arch opens like a gate inside the bowels of the beast.

An old acquaintance is waiting for you there, standing in the middle of the passage. He looks surprised.

"Baron told me you turned back."

With how EF has done things this thread, I doubt it will, though I really fucking hope it does go to the background and never becomes the focus ever again, but it would seem that the Abyssals plot is all about fighting the Curse with the Titan, which would be fucking appalling on EF's part to reduce the quest to another GC plot campaign.

I really really hope I'm wrong though, but its not looking like it sadly.

I wonder if the same people who complain about having to solve the Great Curse are the same who complain when Maka suffers from it.

"Like this? Aren't we missing the Nega-Twilight or whatever you call it?"

He stares at you in amazement.

Then breaks into giggling.

After a few seconds, you and the others start laughing as well.

"...No, we call it a Daybreak, but..."

"Daybreak, huh." You nod. "Makes sense."

"Doc is..." He scratches his head. "He's really busy with another thing, let's say."

"That does break the symmetry of the whole thing. Symbolism and all." You note.

He shrugs. "Sometimes you have to make do with what you have. Even I got here at the last moment."

"Oh?" You wonder.

"Looks like the Silver Prince is on the move." He replies, looking worried.

"Where to?" That is bad news.

"No idea yet. He's just marshaling his forces for now." He accompanies you inside, through a corridor lined with carved iron pillars and sculpted bone chandeliers.

It gives you the chills, and the worst part is that you can't dispute that, despite its creepy aesthetic, it's actually fairly elegant, in its own weird way.

"...So... How's your mistress?"

Phoenix smiles. "She kind of looks a bit like you."

"Really?" You wonder. That sounds weird.

"Bit taller." He sidesteps as you both reach the end of the corridor, a massive double door in glass and steel. It's either brand new or has been recently polished to a mirror-like sheen, leaving not a speck of dust.

The idea of a Deathlord ordering servants to clean up her house because she's waiting for guests is, for some reason, quite amusing to you.

"...The mortal should probably stay in the cart." Phoenix suggests, as you're about to push the door open.

You give him a nod, and wait for him to escort her back before pushing the door open.

In a vast, black cathedral-like room, every surface in steel and iron lined with specks of blood-like rust, surrounded by black, red and silver drapes and tapestries, sits on an iron throne a massive, threatening figure, easily twice as tall as a normal human.

The oddest thing right now is probably that, for some bizarre reason, you don't feel any sort of fear or anxiety.

Is it odd that you feel so much at home right here and now?

The massive death lord looks down at you with eyes glowing with the power of Death itself, and you feel an icy touch crawling across your skin.

Tia steps behind you. Is she intimidated? Overwhelmed? Whatever it is, you didn't expect her to do it, and it catches you by surprise. You thought Tia was completely fearless, but now you feel her grasping your hand for comfort.

The monster smiles pleasantly. "Welcome."

Her voice is... it sounds like the voice a machine could make. A vast, hollow, magnificent machine made of brass pipes and perfected harmonics.

But buried deep in the echo of that voice, in some distant place and time, you feel the lingering warmth of blood.

You give the Tyrant a perfect bow, and gently pull Tia ahead from her hand to introduce her as well.

"It's a pleasure to be able to finally meet you in person."

"Likewise." The Tyrant replies, slouching a bit deeper into her jagged throne. "I'm glad that you accepted my invitation, even though it was extended in a rather unorthodox way."

Odd that she doesn't mention the people she sent to harass you along the way.

"This is my future husband, Tia." You present her. "If she'll still want me." You add with a bit of modesty, that seems well received.

"I, er... uh... hello." She bows very stiffly, clearly a fish out of all the waters that have ever been, are, and will ever be.

So she's not afraid of a literal incarnation of death. She's worried that she'll cause you to make a bad impression on her in what is clearly an important meeting.

"Would you like something to eat or to drink?" She asks, gently lifting (where did she get that?) a silver pitcher. The smell of red wine wafts from it, together with spices and... something else.

You're not sure how to reply to that. She's almost so polite it HAS to be some kind of trick.

The Deathlord signs and looks down, as if working up the courage, or effort, or finding the right words to use.

"I need the Titan." She says.

"Why?" you simply reply.

"I need to fire a single shot from the Eye of Judgement, its main weapon, into a specific location, which rests in the Underworld."

You can't help but be impressed. "Doesn't sound like a walk in the park."

"It's not." she replies. But it's the one way to shatter the chains keeping me bound."

"...that just raises all sort of questions." You continue. "Is the Titan your Machine?"

"Yes." She replies. "A world before, I was its master."

"...why are you asking, instead of taking? Is it just politeness?"

"...I want you to be on my side." The says, almost... Shyly. "I want you to approve of what I mean to do."

"Why me?"

A long pause follows.

"...He appears to you, doesn't He? Sometimes. He guides you."

"...Him? Yes. Sometimes. Why?"

"...he no longer appears to me. He long disappeared from my life. Instead... I get the Voices."

You nod.

"I want to go back."

It's because whenever the GC comes up it inevitably takes over whatever used to be the plot of the game and replaces it with "cure the Great Curse"!

When the whole point of tabletop games is to come up with your own story, this is a poison.

Well, Deathlords became Deathlords specifically because they refused to repent. You can't redeem a Deathlord because then she wouldn't be a Deathlord.

Luckily, she seems interested in ceasing to be a Deathlord.

>>

we should probably save up for social 5

I'd love to save for Soc 5, but this is way too useful for what we're doing to pass up.

Also, normally I don't like pointing fingers, but there's something i want to talk with you guys about.

When I throw you a curveball (not specifically "Maka doing something different than voted", I mean generally any unexpected event or result), there are two possible reactions:

"What the shit, that is not what we voted for, railroading, worst QM ever."

and

"What the shit, that is not what we voted for. I wonder what's happening. Let's keep acting in character and use write-ins to avoid obviously bogus or biased options. There must be a reason this thing is happening."

I realize I'm running a quest on 4chan and therefore I can't exactly choose my players. But I do hope (a bit naively perhaps) that all the players in the first category will get mad, drop Exalted Quest, and leave only those in the second category to play.

The ones complaining about "GC plot ruins everything" are fine for example, that is legitimate criticism, I can take that. But if an Abyssal steals Maka's bike or something, react to it within the game, don't complain in meta because a turn of events you didn't like or approve of just happened.

Let me come out clear: there ARE times where the result of your votes is going to be weighted unevenly or outright ignored, and times where you will be presented with biased or "trap" options.

It could be the Great Curse, brainwashing, other curses, social combat results, memories and facets of personality from Maka's First Age persona or Primordial War persona resurfacing, or any other kind of reason.

It's not going to happen often. Think how often it has happened in 60 threads and almost one year of running. I don't think it's going to be any more often that it has been up to now.

You might not like it when it happens.

Much like a bad dice roll, an Abyssal stealing your bike, or stuff like that, you will have to deal with it in-character as it happens, just like you did in this thread, with all the write-ins ignoring the options to go back.

I think that roleplaying with a GM works off the general assumption that the GM will not be a dick and that you can trust him to have a good reason for the shit he pulls.

It's your decision if you believe you can trust me with that or not.

While you are correct to an extent, I think the medium and your delivery here are bigger factors than you're implying.

It's not all just HURR PLAYERS NOT PLAYING ALONG; a big component is also that the narrative elements you're trying to get across aren't effecitve in reaching your players; or at least not with the effect you intend. I think you need to take a hard lookat that, too
