You are called Al-Azif.

Except that was a terrible name, being more accurately the one intended for your armagus then yourself. And how you know that when a Kaka kitten had to teach you how to make a sandwich, you're not going to think too deeply on. So, for the time being, you have decided to refer to yourself as Alice Zief.

Being a mispronunciation of your book, you don't suppose that wins much in the way of style points either.

Amnesiac, Advanced Ars practitioner, and currently one of the most interesting things in the entire Kaka village, judging by how the kittens pile up on top of you in the mornings to play and ask questions.

Thankfully you've gotten them to turn down the roughhousing after the incident with chair, but they're still a little rambunctious.

They've been bouncing up and down all morning, chirping about how a very important person is coming to visit today. Of course they're not here yet, but the kittens still pretty excited anyway.

Maybe you should take some time to meet them yourself.

While the guests could be important...

There are still kittens here.

Tiny, adorable kittens that love to play with the yarn-balls you conjure for them.

They just bat at them and pounce and their claws sometimes get stuck on them so they have giant balls of yarn stuck to their little kitty paws and...

So cuuuuuuuute!

Tao, apparently the kitten responsible for discovering your unconscious body, you have gifted with a ball even bigger then she is.

Currently, she's somehow managed to get her entire arm dragged into the thing.

So now she's desperately trying to escape it by clawing at it with her other arm and now it's stuck in there too!

"Tao won't lose to something like this!" She declares, having been reduced to trying to pry herself free with her feet.

A handful of the rare adult Kaka clan member walk past your window, slowly guiding a tide of kittens in the streets outside. One of them glances through the window and tosses you a toothy smile, jerking their head in the direction of the village's gates.

You suppose that means that the guests have arrived.

And while you could go see them...

"Raaaawr!"

There are still kittens here..

Still, as teeth rotteningly cute as it is, you can't afford to spend all day watching Tao slowly become the center of a ball of yarn.

You gather your cloak, sweeping it out with one hand into a dramatic flourish as you turn.

Tao is slightly distracted, so she doesn't really notice your goodbye, but a handful of the other kittens do at least.

Leaving the house, you meld with the tiny crowd almost instantly. Apart from you, they are all members of the Kaka clan. A few jackets of different colors are worn by a few, but for the most part everyone wears the same yellow-pawed jacket.

To be honest, it makes you stick out a little.

Which might explain why the cat person walking on two legs seems to staring at you.

He's rather weird looking, if you say so yourself.

You've been staying with the Kaka clan and you're familiar with Beastkin, but you've never seen anything quite like him before. While they have animalistic feature, they at least display human traits.

This guy just looks like a cat that decided to start getting around on his hind legs.

Still, it looks like he's making his way over to you.

He pauses, the expression in one eye as unreadable as the one behind his eye-patch.

"Well, I reckon' that this is the first time we've met." He drawls out, his words strangely neutral. "Name's Jubei. Mind if'n I ask yours?"

"Well, you see..." And this feels stranger each time you say it. Not that it felt right the first time, but you don't have a lot of other explanations. "I kind of have amnesia."

"Oh?" Jubei's voice twangs. "Ain't that the kind of thing most folk go to the Library for?"

"I... don't think so?" The Novus Orbus Librarium? Why would you seek out a Grimoire repository for medical assistance? "I woke up a long ways down the mountain in the crater and climbed up to the edges of the Kaka clan's wall. Thereafter I was rescued by one of the kittens. I've been recovering in the village over the last few days." Jubei's nostrils flare.

"Well, at least that explains why you still reek of seithr." He nodded. Wait a second..

"Isn't seithr odorless?" The cat waves a paw dismissively.

"Never you mind that. It's no so much smell I'm usin' as it is something else that there's no point callin' anything else." He seems to relax a bit after that, his eye taking on a much warmer look.

"Still, gotta admit that I'm surprised a lady like yourself could survive down there. The air's thick with miasma, and that don't sit right with most folks, even after spending a few days recoverin'. It explains the hair, though." A claw points out the pale braid hanging over your shoulder.

There's a brief moment of silence as the cat looks you over, a touch of nostalgia in his eyes.
>>
>>38035389

"But, enough 'bout that. Mind if'n I ask you for a favor miss...?" He pauses, waiting for you to fill in the blank.

"Alice, for now."

"Right then, Alice it is. I seem to have found myself an apprentice some time ago." He jerks a paw over his shoulder to a boy in a red shirt standing behind him, and you blink, seemingly noticing the kid for the first time. He seems... oddly familiar. "Now, provided that armagus on your hip ain't for show, mind putting him through some paces? The boy needs to fight something that ain't a log or he'll go crazy, you see?"

The boy in question fumes under his breath as Jubei chuckles.

You look down at the cat's apprentice.

Even the top of his ridiculously puffy hair doesn't reach higher then mid-chest on you. Honestly, you're a little worried here. You can probably handle anything he can come up with, even if he has something concealed in his cybernetic arm. You make a note to keep an eye on it, since those things can have all kind of surprises tucked into them.

"What sort of... training has he had?" You ask as tactfully as possible. You have a feeling you're about to become an object lesson, and the boy is going to be the one recieving it.

"Oh, a couple of months sword training, and a few weeks practicing a log course." That doesn't sound like much at all. And what does a 'log course' entail, anyway?

Jubei explains.

You idly wonder how the hell the boy isn't on crutches.

"Ragna." The boy interjects.

"My name is Ragna. Not 'Boy', not 'Kid' or 'Apprentice'. It's Ragna, bitch!"

You stare at the boy.

Jubei stares at the boy.

You just continue staring as Jubei slaps him upside the head.
>>
>>38035744

"Sorry about that. He's a decent kid at heart." The cat apologizes as Ragna writhes on the ground, clutching his head and swearing. "He's just had a nasty time of things for awhile. Sometimes you gotta make it clear that keepin' a civil tongue around ladies and youngun's is important." He discreetly gestures at the kittens walking by, bright eyes soaking in everything.

"Anyway, so long as you don't kill him, he should be fine enough."

Leading the way to a small clearing on the edge of town once Ragna recovers, he goes over a few other basic rules to keep things 'simple'. Mostly you're just to avoid disintegrating or dismembering.

That this cat is willing to risk an apprentice like this is a little scary. That Ragna is going along with it, and has apparently been doing so for months now, is more than a little scary.

Either way, you're now ready to begin.

Nah, that's just me man.

Commencing mental handshake... Inputting passwords..

Connected.

Your armagus flicks between pages, picking out bits and pieces and fitting them together into a complete ars in seconds. Enhancing speed, strength, durability, and attaching reactive impact sigils at strategic points on your body.

All in all, it take about tewnty seconds of chanting. In a true combat scenario, you'd be dead by now. But considering that time has been allotted to you for preparation while Ragna gets his sword out of his bag, it's still plenty of time to get ready.

Although, the weapon he is using is very... mundane.

It was forged using ars, but apart from it's unusual size, it appears to be an ordinary longsword. It's not even armagus. Just plain steel.

You feel tempted to ratchet things back a little, but you decide against it. You still don't know what's in his arm, after all. That's probably where his actual ars is kept. You just need to keep an eye on it, and the sword, and you should be fine.

"Begin."

Ragna's attacks are, quite frankly, barely worth the name.

They're wide and obvious swings that you can dodge around with too much effort. A few circumstances necessitate a block, but, thanks to the sigils you cast, the hits bounce right off.

You let him attack for a while, dealing with his sword like an annoying bug with a few more slaps. And then, once you realize he's not going to be using any tricks with his arm, go on the offensive yourself.

A lightning fast kick breaks his momentum, and leaves him wide open. Your own flurry of blows breaks right through without any resistance, until you deliberately trigger a reactive sigil on your hand and send him flying.

To his credit, the boy can still stand.

Barely.

"Aren't..." He wheezes out as you walk over to him. "Aren't book-types... supposed to be weak or... or slow or something?" You can't help but raise an eyebrow at that cliche idea.

In response to his comment, you simply smile.

"You shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, you know?" And then you hit him in the face again.

Over his moans, you tell him that next time he shouldn't swing so wildly. And that, judging by the way he held his sword, he could probably hold it with one hand while the other pushed or shoved you away, back into a more effective mid-range where his sword would be more effective then your fists.

When points out that your fists are probably stronger then the sword, you ask him whether he wants you to hit him, or hit the sword.

Judging by how he manically shoves you into swording range, you suppose he's taking the matter to heart.

Another exchange of blows, this one ends when your foot slams into his wrist and makes him drop the sword. You give him a second lecture, this time about never letting go of his sword.

Round three goes much the same as the first, except with more tripping and light kicks to split his attention between your hands and your feet.

By round four, he can barely stand, but makes a valiant effort anyway. This one ends with him laying facedown on the cobbles, moaning to himself.

His black arm remains completely arm-like through the entire battle. It's no stronger then the left one, didn't pop out any gadgets, and he didn't even think to use any Ars. To be honest, you're almost disappointed. You probably overdid your own a bit, if this is all it took to put him down.
>>
>>38036546

"Nah, 's about what I figured would happen." The cat replies when you mention it to him. "Ragna just needed a good dose of humble pie, and I figur'd that you looked like some'un more than capable of forcing him to eat it. 'Sides, at least you took the time to teach some things." His gaze turns thoughtful for a second. "I knew he was weak in hand to hand, but seein' you take 'im apart like that just makes it clear as day. It doesn't work too well for me I'm afraid." He waggles a fingerless paw at you. "But for guy like him, learning some better brawlin' skills would be a pretty solid idea."

Rather then having dinner at your own home, Jubei invites you over to his own place in the village.

Which is a little more like a normal house than your own one-bedroom affair, but given the reverential way most of the other villagers treat him, you suppose it makes sense that he'd get better treatment.

This doesn't make the enormous bathtub you see in his house while washing up for the evening meal seem any less appealing.

Dinner is being prepared by Ragna, who despite having just been beaten a dozen shades of black and blue, is still more then ready to cook anything that isn't fish. It seems that while he was training with Jubei out in the wilderness, that's almost all of what they ate.

You just sort of blank out for a second at that thought. The wilderness? You couldn't really call anywhere with a hierachical city 'wilderness'. So, where did they train then...?

Right now, Ragna's control over the Azure Grimoire mostly boils down to 'nonexistent'. So, while he could try and tap into it's power, that would also be an incredibly risky thing to do, even if he could access it reliably.

"And where exactly is the wilderness?" You ask, not entirely sure you're going to find the answer reasonable.

"Where else can an old cat go for some peace and quite these days?" He shrugs. "There's some shallow valleys no more then a few weeks march from here. For a regular human it's a bit much, but Ragna doesn't have much of a problem with it. And if you came up from where you did, you don't either."

There's a brief moment of silence, apart from the hiss of steam and frying food in the other room where Ragna is hard at work.

"Not that I can rightly say anything about that, I suppose." He sits on stool at the head of the table. "Just guesses and what not. Y'smell foreign to these parts and arrived in a crater. Now, I'm just an old cat so I can't say I know everything , but I've seen a lot. Gives me some perspective into the mysteries of life." His lone eye glints. "Now, you might amnesia. Can't claim I can read minds either, so you might really have it. Some folk might take an issue with that, thinkin' you're nothin' but trouble. But the way I see it, so long as you don't go makin' any trouble, I don't see why you should be trouble."

And then... He swims into focus.

There's no other way to put it.

The very world seems to be pushed away from him, while he seems more real, more powerful than anything you've ever felt.

And then, just like that, it's gone.

"So don't make me think you're makin' trouble, y'hear?" And the old cats tails swish as the rapid sound of a knife on a cutting board comes from kitchen, like nothing ever happened.

What the hell was that?

There was no Ars, no seithr, no anything.
>>
>>38037535

Before you get stuck on it, it's probably a very good idea to change topics.

Like just who is Jubei, anyway?

He smirks a bit when you ask him.

"Now, that's an amusin' question. Most people recognize me on sight, or realize who they're talkin' to once I mention my name." He chuckles a bit, clearly a little bemused at the idea.

"Well, a long time ago I was a soldier. But these days, I'm just an old Cat tryin' to look after what's left of his family." When Ragna walks in with a potful of stew, Jubei's eye turns nostalgic, almost paternal.

Dinner is... surprisingly delicious.

You feel like a bit of third wheel as the cat and the boy trade barbs and talk about the day's training.

Speaking of which, is Ragna really a lolicon? I mean, there's his relationship with Rachel which I tend to see more as at least a little antagonistic.

Nu tried to psychotically murder him, so somehow I don't see a lot of 'love' there.

Lambda bailed his ass out of a fire and took a lethal hit for him, so that I can kinda see. Unfortunately, they spent all of a handful of minutes together, so you can't really call that a relationship.

He hates Luna's guts.

And with Noel, he's sort of aware of her existence but unless something happened during the bits of CP I haven't gotten to, there's not a lot of relationship there either.

I mean, he ends up spending more time with the flatter part of the cast, but I don't really see him as interested in them.

I mean, there's Best Girl, but even with her it'd be a tenuous thing.

After the stew is finished and the dishes are cleared from the table, you manage to quietly request the use of Jubei's baths.

The cat himself, it turns out, doesn't care for them.

"My wife did, but, well..." There's a tightness around his eyes. "She ain't here no more. Go on and help yourself. I'll send the boy up with a towel later."

You give him a polite nod and make a beeline for the bathroom.

Stripping takes only so long as it does to wait for the previously generated barrier jacket variant to shut down. It'll leave you a little chilly while the tub fills, but you honestly don't care.

The steam comin up is plenty warm anyway.

It takes longer then you'd like for Jubei's tub to fill, though.

You pass the time looking through the cupboards for soap and shampoo. Near the back of the one nestled beneath the sink you find a pair of dusty looking bottles with some very fancy labels on them. You're a little worried about using them, but it's not like soap goes bad, right?

By the time you have finished rationalizing this, the tub has filled.

Seeing no reason to wait any longer, you pile in and begin your soak.

Logically, this is when Ragna opens the door with your towel and promptly turns red as a cherry.

Science is coming...

Regretfully, the dawning of the sun and the pouring of natural light through my window make a cunning argument that this is likely to be as far as I'm going to get today.

So, while I'm getting the archive ready, does anyone have any questions?

Darn. I'm disappointed. Honestly I'm really enjoying this so far, thanks for running.

Next session, when?

Thanks!

Sometimes I worry about how I'm depicting the world and characters, but I like to think if people like it then I'm doing something right.

If anyone has any comments or suggestions, I'm pretty open to those as well.

good stuff i was wondering what is the extent of our power right now?

This is a complicated question on multiple levels.

In terms of Armagus use, I'll just put down that you are a Wizard. Not the HP, goodness no. The Dresden kind, the one that gets more dangerous the more preparatory time they have.

After spending twenty seconds charging up and casting, you could kick Kid Ragna's ass six ways to sunday. If you had spent a few more minutes, then more interesting things could have happened. Explosive ones.

The issue is, of course, prep time. Not a lot of actual fights will just let you just stand around and start charging up. The longer the fight goes on, the more seithr you suck up, the more powerful you get. But an early blitz or a surprise attack can put you down.

In terms of using your Ars for more practical thing? Your book can do a lot of stuff. Conjuration, teleportation, magnification, and so on. It's almost easier to describe what you can't do.

When it comes to more /exotic/ things, then the answers get complicated. The big thing to keep in mind, is that you are still nowhere near 100%, and that while the Idea Engine is no longer going to explode you into a cloud of imaginary numbers, you still can't use it.

Again, thank you!

Also, archive is up. Lost the images somehow, though...
