September 15th, 2053.

You are Saratoga, and a mousy-haired little destroyer girl has just told you something interesting: you've apparently been summoned by two of the IJN's top battleships.

You're not sure what it is Nagato and Yamato want with you, but it's pretty safe to assume that it's important. For one thing Nagato is your friend, and she wouldn't be so stiffly formal about asking to talk to you if it were anything less than a vital concern. For another, you've also noticed the rest of your team making their way towards Yamato's office with you. Maryland is already with Nagato, and Prinz Eugen has separated off from Bismarck and Tirpitz. She looks concerned, but gives you a nod and a wave anyway as she tries to hide it.

Kongou, however, seems not to have understood the basic instructions, or else is ignoring them. She's got her sisters with her: in fact, Hiei, Haruna, and Kirishima have hardly left her side since you all arrived in Mutsu bay. They're probably going to have to, you realize, and Kongou's probably not going to like it.

>Speak to Kongou immediately. You suspect there's a situation to defuse there, so you might as well do it now.
>Speak with Prinzessin: she may already know something about what's happening, and you want her opinion on it.
>Just head for where Nagato and Maryland are at. You're sure they'll handle everything just fine.

I'll be writing up, but it seems like the internet in my dorm is planning to fuck me again. So there may be a brief break at some point soon while I move to the office.

Kongou, for all her stubbornness and occasional bluster, is a good person. She loves her younger sisters as dearly as you love Lex, and she's been separated from them so long that she's kind of gone overboard now that they're together again. Or at least, that's how you see it. But you also see that Nagato has something planned for you, and that she's calling just your team in to discuss it for a good reason.

So you approach Kongou and her sisters, hoping to pre-empt any problems between her and Nagato before it comes to that. You don't need them fighting each other: especially not now, on the eve of a major campaign against the Abyssal.

“Kongou? What's up with the escort?” you ask, doing your best to sound light-hearted. “I thought this was a team meeting we were going to?”

Kongou raises a single, slender eyebrow: the gesture alone tells you that she's not in a mood to be split off from her sisters. It also tells you that she knows damn well what you're trying to do.

“I thought I'd bring 'em along,” Kongou replies casually. “They get so bored without me, you know. Can hardly keep themselves amused!”

>Come on, I know there's something else to this: you've hardly left them alone since we got here.
>I'm sure they'll understand.
>I don't think Nagato would be too willing to let them listen in.

Kongou and her sisters come to a stop as you step out in front of her and stand your ground. You poke one finger into her sternum for emphasis.

"Come on now, Kongou," you sigh, "you're running from a problem and it's triggering my chase instincts."

"You really are nosy sometimes, you know that Sara?" she growls. "You can cut the team mom act out at any time."

"Can't help it," you shrug. "Tried cutting it out, and it grew right back."

After giving you a look of absolute incredulity, Kongou lets out a little laugh. "Yeah, I guess we've got that in common."

“You really love your sisters, don't you?” you press gently.

Kongou sighs. “Of course I do, you dope,” she replies in a soft voice, visibly relaxing her posture. “How could I not? They're my little sisters.”

“This isn't normal though,” you continue. “You know that, right? You may not have always agreed with Nagato, but you've never outright ignored her like this.”

“I was wondering about that myself,” Haruna admits, allowing her hands to rest on her hips. “I mean, I love getting the gang back together as much as anyone else, but isn't this a bit unfair to Nagato?”

Hiei and Kirishima say nothing, but you catch Kirishima's eyes for a brief moment. Behind her glasses, you can tell she's feeling the same way you do: something's been off about Kongou lately, and she wants to know why.

“Fine,” Kongou mutters half to herself, throwing her hands up in defeat. “Sara, how much do you know 'bout me and my sisters' service?”

“I know you had it rough during the war,” you admit, carefully tasting your words before committing to them. “But beyond that, not much.”

“Hiei-nee was the first Japanese battleship sunk in the war,” Kongou tells you. “An' Kirishima wasn't too far behind. I wasn't there to help them.”

“That's not your fault, sis...” Hiei insists with a gentle nudge of her fist against her older sister's shoulder.

“And then I sank,” Kongou continues. “I left Haruna behind, because I wasn't strong enough. I charged into battle after battle, but in the end I couldn't protect what mattered. As a big sis I failed them once, and I'm not gonna do it again.”

Kongou's eyes suddenly seem to smolder with determination as they meet your own. “I'm not gonna leave 'em behind again. This time we're gonna fight together, and this time I'm gonna be the kinda big sis they deserve!”

(1/2)
>>
>>38001986
"You know Hiei's right though," you counter. "What happened during the war wasn't your fault, and I doubt your sisters want you to beat yourself up about it!"

"She's got a point, sis," Haruna insists. "I mean, I know you want to look out for us, but watching us like a hawk? That's not the big sis I looked up to."

"I always wanted to be like you," Hiei adds. sparing you a glance. You nod, encouraging the short-haired girl to speak her mind. "To some day get to where you are. The last thing I want is to become a worry that weighs you down."

Finally, Kirishima rounds on Kongou, whose eyes have widened in surprise at what her little sisters are telling her. "You're the oldest, Kongou. You're our role model, our friend, our sister... and right now, Nagato needs your strength for something. The Kongou that Kirishima admires wouldn't back down from that."

"Go be you," Haruna adds, resting a hand firmly on Kongou's shoulder: a gesture her sisters are quick to join in on.

Now, you hustle to catch up to Prinzessin. The petite blonde turns her head to watch over her shoulder as you approach.

"Just felt like talking," you tell her. "How you been? How're Tirpitz and Bismarck handling their new lease on life?"

Prinzessin's face lights up, apparently eager to talk about her friends. "Well, I would never have guessed Tirpitz would be as quiet as she is, but she seems to be doing just fine. Same with Bismarck, but she's a bit louder."

"Bothersome?" you ask.

Prinz Eugen shakes her head. "Not at all. She's lively: kind of like a Teutonic version of Kongou really. She doesn't seem to mind being a girl at all."

"You sound surprised."

"A little," she admits. "She's the pride of the Kriegsmarine, so being turned into a human girl? You can see why I'd be a bit concerned, no?"

"It's a bit of a trip," you grant. "Do you know what Nagato's up to?"

"Yamato seemed worried about something," she tells you. "She wanted to speak to Maryland in private, and Nagato went in after them."

"So she interrupted?" you ask. "That's unusual for her."

Prinzessin nods in agreement. "She seemed as concerned as Yamato was."

Your conversation is put on pause as you step through into the pre-fabricated building where Yamato has her office. Inside is a very minimalistic room, with lots of natural-tone bamboo and clean brushed steel. Yamato is sitting at her desk, while Nagato is perched on the corner.

"Please sit," Yamato tells you, and you and Prinzessin find a spot on a low red couch against the other wall.

Once Kongou catches up, rubbing gently at the corner of her eye, she takes a seat next to you. Yamato puts a hand to her lips as she clears her throat, though it seems less "dignified" than the other times you've seen her.

"I am about to tell you something," she says, looking you over slowly. "Once you know this, things will change: but please listen to what we have to say. And please, keep this knowledge within this room."

"Can you do this for us?" Nagato asks solemnly. "Will you listen, and not speak of it? Not even to your own dear sisters?"

Next to you Kongou seems to ponder the issue, but eventually reaches the same conclusion. "I'll hear ya out."

On your other side, Prinzessin merely nods in silence.

"Very well. The fact of the matter is that we have determined that several of the Kanmusu present here have died at least once in the past."

Kongou's eyes widen. "No... that's impossible. I mean, come off it! We're all still here, aren't we?"

Yamato is quick to agree. "True. However, it seems Maryland has some memories from her time as an Abyssal that suggest she was present for the sinking of Musashi and her team."

"More and more we have come to believe that the naval Admiralties have been replacing us a few at a time," Nagato adds. "This is what we have called you for."

"And you're concerned that they may stop bringing us back," Prinzessin concludes.

"Covers our bases," Maryland adds. "Just in case, you know?"

"In case of what?" Prinzessin asks nervously.

Kongou shrugs. "In case they get pissed that someone figured out their secret and do somethin' really scummy."

"Ah," Prinz Eugen nods.

"I have worked with him the most," Nagato suggests. "I know the man."

"And I'm Navy to the core," you add. "Could be I can play the favorites angle. Tag out, Yamato m'dear?"

The stately brunette rises to her feet, gesturing for Nagato to take her seat. "Very well. Speak carefully."

Nagato wastes no time in establishing a video call to Admiral Clarke's address. The image he presents is one of a tired, frustrated man: you can tell he's probably been shouting down some rookie admirals all day long. And they probably deserved it.

It's like one little alien attack suddenly means ANY old officer can earn a star on their collar.

"Ah, Nagato, Saratoga," the man greets you with a long-suffering smile. "How are you liking Japan?"

"Feels like home, sir," Nagato replies with a nod. "Though I must admit I rather miss Hawaii. Probably as much as you're missing it right now."

Clarke sighs wearily, getting up quickly to close the door to his office behind him and shut the blinds. No doubt he knows this is going to be a conversation that's best kept on the quiet.

"How did you know?" he asks.

"The printer behind you," Nagato replies. "The display is in katakana."

"Good eye," he chuckles to himself. "I assume you're not calling to examine my office supplies?"

"Afraid not," you admit.

"Admiral, how much do you know about the reported "lost time" experienced by several of our sisters?" Nagato asks.

There's a moment where the Admiral's eyes narrow nearly to slits... and he realizes you noticed. He lowers his voice, checks instinctively around the room, and leans close to the webcam.

"What have you pieced together?"

"We pieced a little together from Mary's memories and some of the service records for the kanmusu in question," Nagato explains. "Enough to know that something is very wrong about the situation, but not enough to prove anything."

The Admiral scratches at his graying hair. "Fair enough. I suspected you would find out once you met Maryland."

"I can't answer all of your questions, at least not directly. But I will do what I can. Ask away."

“How?” you ask simply.

“Spare bodies are easy to construct,” Admiral Clarke admits. “When a kanmusu dies they are reborn, and their memories are tampered with somehow before they are awakened. Some form of deep mental suggestion. Then any survivors are given the same treatment.”

“Why?” Nagato presses.

“The Admiralty believes memories of previous deaths would lead to severe mental trauma, reducing battlefield effectiveness.” Clarke practically spits the last two words: you can clearly hear his disdain at such sterilized treatment of your sisters' mental health.

“Where?” Nagato continues.

Clarke nods. “Kure, of course.”

“Are we all identical?” you ask. “I mean, our clones?”

“There is only one Saratoga,” the Admiral insists. “Only one. Same is true of all of you. Your sisters may have changed bodies, but their souls are intact... I hope. Oh dear God I want to think that.”

“When the war is over, what happens to us?”

“I don't know,” Clarke replies quietly. “I disagreed too much with my superiors for them to really keep me in the loop, I fear. But I do know this: the Admiralties of the world navies view kanmusu as living weapons. They don't like trusting weapons with their own thoughts and feelings.”

“I would assume the worst of us old bastards, because they're probably planning for the worst from you."

"I know that. Your team and your sisters know that. The Admiralty doesn't, and that's their own failing for never bothering to get to know you."

"Will you help us?" Nagato asks.

Clarke sighs, and shakes his head sadly. "I've done what I can by not acting... I wanted to tell you immediately, but if word got out you would have been 'reset'... and I'd never get another chance. I can cover for you, but you're the only ones who can take action."

"Can we trust anyone?" you ask dejectedly.

"Each other," the old man smiles. "That young madman Buchanan also knows. The man treats his kanmusu as if they were his own daughters... I can't believe that you wouldn't see something stupid and heroic from him before the end."

"Go to Kure. I fear that they are doing something there to replace you; something I have no access to information on. Be careful."

"Enough," you quickly reply. "As for how many 'enough' is, let's put it this way. If you were me and I were you, would you tell you?"

The old man chuckles darkly to himself. "Paranoia is unbecoming of a lady, Sister... but it'll keep you alive. Where you're heading, telling the truth will get you killed. Please remember that."

Admiral Clarke stands, and raises his hand in a salute. "Whether you win or lose, I suspect this will be my last order to you: don't die. That is all."

You and Nagato both return the salute. Even Maryland, Kongou, and Prinz Eugen are saluting the back of the monitor. Yamato shuts her eyes and lowers her head, deep in thought as the feed terminates.

"That settles it," Nagato concludes. "Kure Arsenal must be taken."

As a person who has never played the game, what exactly are the Abyssal's new origins? Is it now outright stated that they are former US ships? Are they Aliens? Corrupted or vengeful spirits?

Inquiring minds want to know.

"Then we'll need to take it," you tell her, clenching your fist. "Our future depends on it... but what about the battle?"

Yamato shrugs. "You mean the battle up north? I suppose you won't be taking part."

Kongou's eyes widen, and she immediately crosses the room to get right up in Yamato's face. You know her well enough to realize that she simply doesn't realize she's getting too close, and you suspect Yamato knows as well... but to most it would seem like she was picking a fight.

"You mean we'll be sidelined for the main event?" she shouts. "You mean my sisters will be fighting for their lives and I won't even be there?"

Yamato nods. "I'm sorry, but it sounds as if they need you to be elsewhere... or is such a mission beneath you?"

"I'm sure she doesn't mean that," Prinzessin interrupts. "But you're asking us to turn our backs on the biggest battle our sisters have ever fought."

"It isn't fair," Mary agrees. "But the world isn't always fair."

"My sisters won't miss me. I'll go."

Nagato nods in agreement. "I will leave it to Mutsu. She has grown strong while we were apart... but Yamato is correct. Though my heart wants to be at my sister's side, my steel and blood are needed in Kure."

You sigh, leaning up against the wall behind Nagato. "I guess you may need air support. Count me in too."

"Tirpitz and Bismarck aren't my only family," Prinz Eugen adds calmly. "If I let you go without me I would never forgive myself."

Kongou, predictably, takes the longest to decide. After several long seconds of avoiding your teammates' eyes, she finally speaks. "I'm tellin' my sisters. I don't give a hot God damn what you say, I owe them an explanation."

"I would never stop you from telling them," Nagato admits. "Mutsu should know as well. She will fight better knowing why I cannot fight at her side, and that even if I am not I will still fight for her sake."

"It's agreed, then," Yamato declares. "You will time your departure to match our deployment to the north, under the cover story that you are suffering from mechanical issues and need to hang back."

"And the local support staff?" you ask.

Yamato scowls at the wall, the intensity of her glare sending a shiver down your spine even though it's not directed at you.

"Upon the name Yamato, they will be dealt with. You may count on this."

"Is that all?" Prinzessin asks. "Can we bring in any support?"

Nagato bites her lip ever so gently in thought. "Perhaps. Capital ships would deprive the main fleet too heavily. Perhaps destroyers?"

>No. We have to do this fast and hard, and we can't expose anyone else to danger.

Let me make this simple for you.
>>
>>38008173
The former will almost certainly come up, but the latter... part of it is she's a ship named after Musashi province, which shares a name with Miyamoto Musashi. The latter was famous in his prime for cultivating a wild and unkempt look, and for psyching out his opponents by finding ways to piss them off or offend them. That's the canon reasoning, at least, and I kept that as part of it. She's making a deliberate play on her name, and her personality takes after him a little.

There's another very simple reason, at least in this quest, that I'll probably mention in the epilogue.

Plot twist, she actually likes the look and enjoys the attention she gets.

"We can take two destroyers," you suggest. "As for who we take, I'll defer to you two, Yamato. Nagato."

Mary nods. "That actually sounds good. Miss Yamato? Can you make the arrangements?"

Yamato nods, still wearing her "battle-glare". "I shall arrange this for you."

She then turns to leave the room.

"Don't go with such scary eyes, big sis!" Kongou calls out after her. "Don't wanna run the poor kids off, do you!?"

"Jesus she scares me sometimes," Mary shudders for dramatic emphasis. "Makes me damn glad I'm not plugged into the hivemind anymore."

"I think we are all happy to have you on our side again," Nagato replies with a wink in her friend's direction.

"So this is it," Kongou mutters. "This is the last battle."

"And I hope this'll be the last war," you add, pounding your fist gently down onto her bare shoulder.

"If there is another war," Prinz Eugen counters, "I want no part in it. I have had my fill... we all have."

"Let's finish this, then," you grin wildly. "Come on, ladies. We have work to do."
>>
>>38008490
And that's where I'm calling it for the night. The battlefield you've chosen is the birthplace of Nagato, Yamato, and many others besides. It's also the resting place of Amagi, Ooyodo, Tone, Aoba, Hyuuga, Ise, Haruna, among others. The air raid there left Nagato as the last surviving Japanese capital ship, and your own assault on hte repurposed base will either secure a peaceful future life for you and all the kanmusu, or will end in your deaths.

Good luck. Archive's up, the conclusion will be tomorrow night at 10pm GMT.

I promised to give an answer to this question, so here it is. I started running this quest because I geek the fuck out over anything to do with naval history, and because I genuinely like some of the character designs presented in Kancolle. Some of the kanmusu don't do it for me but are popular with other people. I think some of them are cute, and that some have a high potential for badassery. I also enjoy a lot of the fanon that tries to expand on the original setting and characters. I thought it would be fun to run a quest based on it, and to have people share in my brand of nerdiness.

And it was a fun ride for me, all things considered. But it was also tiring, and had its moments of rage-inducement. So now that I'm getting to the natural end point of the one arc I'd had mostly thought through when I began, I've decided to make this the conclusion.

Some people have stuck with this through the salt and the shitstorms, and are still having fun. I deeply appreciate that, and I want to provide an ending that satisfies those players as much as it satisfies myself as the writer.

If I dragged it out with a second arc, I'm not entirely convinced I could deliver on that: the longer this runs past what I initially planned, the less confidence I'd have. So that's why I'll be ending it with this next battle and the aftermath.

Hope that answers your question.

That makes sense. I do remember reading that drama over the railroading too.

I raise the option of doing a more lighthearted Kancolle quest that expands on the setting and characters without getting into quite the heavy themes and overarching plot that you have with this quest. A middle ground between this and the anime perhaps? You seem to enjoy Kancolle but not the ringer this put you through, so I think that's a viable thing.

Really I just want more Kancolle stuff since, afaik, this and Planefag's quest are the only two that exist.
>>
>>38008860
Well, from the start, and with your twitter responses, and with what seems to be you samefagging, you tripped /a/'s bullshit meter.
>>
>>38009010
In my defense, there was zero railroading involved. Not bringing Mary along, finding a way to arm her, not letting her leave Kongou's side, or hitting the target DC would have led to a different scenario.

But that's in the past now. As to your other thoughts, I really don't feel like I'd be your guy to run a light-hearted quest on any topic, let alone one where I've ruffled too many feathers already.

Doesn't mean I wouldn't play one after I retire this name though.

Doh, and here I was already thinking of possible scenarios to suggest.

One where the Abyssals "invade" the naval base. But it's not actually them, but instead Bismarck and some other German ships dressed up in (rather crude) abyssal girl outfits asked by the Admiral to test the combat readiness of his/her local ship girls. Property damage and severe embarrassment would follow before the German girls join the fleet.

And something I joked about in Planefag, quest, Kongou getting her hands on JoJo and infecting the other ship girls with dramatic posing tendencies.

You could mix stuff like that up with actual combat missions and expeditions.

In any case, even if you're willing to play one, there isn't anyone but you and Planefag offering the quests in the first place.
>>
>>38009385
