Second part of the night's thread! First part here:

while it lasts

++

[x] Yeah, I understand that.

You nod. “Yeah, yeah. I understand that.” You say, kind of quietly too.

The table is silent again long enough for you to order food- an omelet and some toast, along with a glass of, you're hoping, real damn orange juice. The shit you get in Poland is from concentrate that was probably frozen sometime in the last ice age- bitter and sour and nasty as hell. Mom always spoiled you when it came to that, buying the good stuff-

You pause for a moment, thinking about it. Your parents don't even know they're grandparents yet. You chuckle at the thought internally.

“So,” You say. “Do you girls need some clothes?”

They look at each other, then at you. Again, Stasya speaks for them both. “We have the dresses we are wearing, and our flight equipment. Is that not enough?” She asks, sounding genuinely curious.

You shake your head. “Not at all- you can't wear the same dress every day.” You say. Shit, even you own more than one change of civilian clothes. Not that you ever get to wear them.

The look at each other again. “We cannot?”

You laugh and shake your head. “No, no. not at all. If we have time, we'll have to get you some more clothes.”

The two of them look at each other- they seem to do that a lot. But it's when they start to watch someone past you that you turn around.

You grin as soon as you do, standing up and shaking the hand of the man approaching. “Inspector Victoire!” You say. “Hey, what brings you here?”

“You do, my friend!” He responds, laughing. “May I sit?” the question is addressed to the two girls and Merlin- not you. They don't answer, instead splitting their attention between him and you.

[] Go ahead and take a seat, inspector. They're still a bit shy.

[x] Go ahead and take a seat, inspector. They're still a bit shy.

“Go ahead and grab a seat, inspector. They're still a bit shy.” You say, sitting back down in your own. He elects to grab a chair from a nearby empty table and spin it around sitting with his chest against the back of it. “So you're in charge of security for us?”

He nods. “Oui, all four of you. When they tell me you have daughters, I must laugh. She carried them well, I am thinking, she did not show it at all!”

You snort. “I take it they didn't correct you until later?”

He shakes his head. “They allowed me to travel here with many baby things, diapers and toys and these kinds of things. They are only telling me as I arrive to the station here.” He grins and shakes his head again with a laugh. “It is ok, I will repay the joke later.”

“So I guess the arrangement is the same?” You ask.

“Non, not exactly. This time I have a platoon of the legion at my disposal.” He says, giving you another grin. “I am thinking we will not have problems here.”

“I hope not.” you say, nodding. “But if we do-”

“If we do, I will see to the little ones first, my friend.” He says, neatly guessing what you were about to request. “there is much interest in them, already, you know.”

Both of them seem to pick up a bit at that, though he's addressing you.

“There is?”

He nods. “Oh yes. They were on the TV, you didn't know?”

[x] … no. no I didn't. What got shown?

“No.” You say, pausing to look at the two girls, who have gone back to looking at their food and eating it. They don't inhale it like Merlin can- and does- but they're not slow eaters either. By contrast, most of your breakfast is getting cold on the plate. “No, I didn't. What got shown?”

He shrugs. “The dogfight above the island and a shaky, over-zoomed image of the two of them embracing you while you leaned against yet another beautiful woman and had the look of a dying man.” He says, then looks sideways at you. “How many gorgeous women do you have waiting to hold your hand, my friend?” He laughs.

“Entirely too many.” You respond, thinking about the footage. “How did it get past the censors?”

He shrugs. “I do not know, it was pulled quickly. But enough was shown that questions are being asked. We will be vigilant, my friend, have no worry.”

“It's not that so much.” You say, leaning in. “Did they tell you who they were?”

He nods. “I was notified the same time the mother of night called to offer her services.”

“Brigitte?” You ask, and he nods again.

“Oui. She is nearby, but not here currently. She says you are distracting.” He grins. “I think you are a lucky, lucky man if she thinks this.”

You notice the two girls- and Merlin, are paying rapt attention to the conversation without trying to seem like they are.

[x] Not in front of the kids, please.

“Not in front of the kids, man!” You say, shooting a look at him.

He laughs. “Ah, oui, I am forgetting you are a parent now! I will attempt to be more mature.”

“I appreciate it.” You say, finally turning to your food. “So Brigitte?”

“Oui. Alone, but that is enough. Anyway, I must be going, my friend. Take care.” He says, standing up and returning his chair to it's table. “I will contact you if there is anything you need to know.”

“Appreciate it.” you say around a mouthful of egg.

The girls all sit in silence while you wolf down your food- it's excellent, and you really should be eating it slower and enjoying it more, but the simple fact is that you haven't eaten in several days and you seem to be getting hungrier the more you eat.

Finally, though, Merlin speaks up. “S-so admiral Nixon s-said he was going t-to talk to you about VDNI...” she says, quietly.

[x] He did. I said yes. We'll have to see where it goes from here though.

You nod, finishing your orange juice. “He did.” You confirm.

“A-and?” She edges slightly closer to you.

“I said we'd get it. We'll have to see where it goes from here though.” You say- and you're surprised when she hugs you again.

“You know this might not work out?” You say.

She nods. “Y-yeah. But thanks for b-believing me anyway.” She says.

The two girls sit across the table, quiet still. They remain sitting when you and merlin finally stand up, ready to head upstairs.

“You girls done?” You ask. They both nod.

“Well, let's head back up to the rooms, then.” You say, motioning for them to walk just ahead of you. They comply without comment, walking just within arm's reach of each other and you.

You're met by a uniformed policeman in front of the hall to your rooms, he lets you pass without comment. The two girls make for one of the other bedrooms quietly, while you and Merlin both find seats in the sitting room. You haven't seen anyone else yet, let alone whoever's supposed to be getting you new whites, so you figure you've got a minute to talk.

[x] ask Merlin about the girls.

“So they're quiet.” You say, breaking the silence between you and Merlin. Far from unwelcome, it's just one of those quiets where the two of you are enjoying luxury you rarely get.

She nods. “T-they're kind of scared of you.” She says.

“Scared of me? Why?” You ask, surprised.

“T-they think you'll be angry at them f-for fighting against you.” She says. “I-I've told them that that's not true, but they have to see it f-for themselves.”

You nod. “Fair enough. What else do you know about them?”

“N-not a lot.” Merlin responds, looking down, her voice suddenly subdued. “T-they don't like to talk about a-anything.”

“I see.” You say, trying to keep the heat out of your voice. “Nixon and Longstreet both think they're conditioned.”

Merlin nods. “Y-yeah, I think s-so too. I-it's horrible.” She shakes her head. “F-frank, you'll never let that happen t-to us, right?”

“Right, kiddo.” you say- while you don't like making promises you don't know you can keep, you feel like you can make this one safely. “And I'm going to try and help them get better.”

She shakes her head. “I-I think the best y-you'll be able to do is j-just be there for them.” she looks back up at you, a hopeful smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. “S-shouldn't be hard f-for you though.”

You grin. “Yeah, shouldn't be hard at all.”

You're interrupted by a knock at the door and inspector Victoire's voice. “My friend, I have some navy personnel here to see you.”

“It's me and the tailors, son.” Nixon says, a second later. “Time to get your fancy suit on.”

You sigh, looking at Merlin. “You too?”

She nods. “A-and I'm getting t-the witch uniform.”

You grin. “How daring!”

She blushes red. “M-maybe n-not.”

You laugh at the expression on her face as the door opens. “Go ahead and use the bedroom, kiddo.” You say, and she nods, hopping off the couch.

“So what do you think?” Nixon says, as you hold an arm out to let the guys get a measurement- they've got a set of whites already here, they just need to tighten them up in a couple places- you've lost weight.

“About what, sir?”

“The kids.” He says, taking your seat on the couch.

[x] They're quiet.

You shrug. “They're quiet, sir.” You say, shaking your head. “I don't have much of a better read on them yet, but I'm starting to think the reds fucked them up pretty good.”

He nods. “Doesn't surprise me. Seems like there's two groups there, one of them that does... this. And the other that's like us.” He says. “Your friend Putin is in the second camp, I think.”

“You heard from him?” You ask.

He shakes his head. “No, and I won't. But that doesn't change what I said.”

You're about midway through fitting- bare chested, but at least you've got pants on, when the door to the girl's room opens up and they emerge. They look at everyone in the room impassively, but pad over to the couch nearest you and sit.

“Hiya girls.” you say. “Decide to come out and sit with us?”

They both nod.

“You two want to watch some TV?” you say, holding out your arm again and tilting your head away so the tailor can get a better measurement. “I don't know what's on but-”

Staysa shakes her head. “We wanted to ask if we could go with you.” She says, quietly- you have to strain to hear her. “We don't like being alone.”

You look at Nixon, who shrugs. “Your call, son. It'll make the security team's job harder, but I don't see why not if we leave early.” He looks over at the girls- both of whom are looking at him with that unbreaking gaze of theirs.

Yes, it will. You don't reveal your fucking cards. For all the Soviets know their two fighters were shot down. We don't want to let them see that they're alive. That'll screw with us down the road.

[x] I don't see any reason why not.

“I don't see any reason why not.” You say. “But you know I can't sit with you, right?”

They nod. “We know.” Staysa says. “But being there will be better than being here, alone.”

“Well, son, that means we probably ought to get moving. How's the jacket fit?” Nixon says.

You pull on an undershirt and then the dress jacket. “Feels fine, admiral.” you say. “Dress uniforms are never comfortable.”

“Who're you telling?” He asks, laughing. “Here, lemme take a look at ya.”

He scrutinizes your ribbons and brass, finally nodding. “As good as I've seen.” He eventually says. “Is your RIO ready in there?”

Merlin takes that moment to step out- the bare frill of the witch's dress skirt around the bottom of her Jacket, barely covering her skivvies. Her ribbons are the same as yours- except for the purple heart. “H-how do I look?” She asks, spinning in place slowly.

“Who taught you that?” You ask, laughing. “You look fine.”

“T-the twins.” She says. “T-they said it'd drive K-kenji crazy.”

“Yeah. Yeah it will. And not in a good way, kiddo.” You say, laughing. “Shall we go? Ladies?”

Stasya and Lilya slide off their seats on the couch, stepping in front of you and walking there, between you and your marine escort. They're in their blues- as an escort, they're largely for looks, but the functional part of your security is being handled by the French. You can see more than a few men in suits- you recognize inspector Victoire. He slides over to you as soon as he sees the girls.

“My friend, I will not question you, since you are a father and I am not, but is bringing them a good idea? I am told if they are seen by a camera and identified...”

>>
>>37989467
>"Comrade Stork was surely coming to deliver them to me, but darling was so anxious to meet our daughters that he shot down Comrade Stork so he could present them to me himself."

You look down at the girls, who look up at you. “You girls really don't want to stay in the rooms?” you ask. “We can have someone sit in there and keep you company.”

They both shake their heads.

“I think we can have them stand behind the curtains.” Victoire says, after a second. “This is no more than five meters from where you will be. Is that acceptable?”

You look down at the girls, who look at each other, then at you, then nod.

“Sounds like.” you say. “Can you get them in and out without the press catching a glimpse?”

He nods. “Oui, that is child's play. I am more worried about them being there, but the press is not allowed behind the podium, so that will be acceptable. Though I do not know if they will be able to see you from where they will be.”

“That's ok.” Stasya says, quietly. “We just don't want to be alone.”

You all pile into a trio of staff cars- you end up riding with the two girls, while Merlin and Nixon ride in the car behind yours. It's a little crowded, but you arrive well before anyone else, and have a chance to sit behind the podium, looking around. The ceremony is being held at a nearby airfield. You recognize the buildings as belonging to 'l ecole de air, the ADA's training base.

You're surprised to hear Jean-luc's voice greeting you from nearby. “They dragged you here too, eh?” He asks, walking over and offering a salute- one you return quickly- before shaking your hand. “This is silliness. We should still be on the front, non?”

“From what they tell me, I was dying for a vacation.” You say with a bit of a grin.

He scoffs. “Have they told you what all we are in for?” he asks, after a second. You notice Nixon slinking off- he's out of line of sight before you can say anything.

“Nope.” You respond, noting the girls have found seats nearby- and are watching you. “You got any idea?”

He shakes his head. “Non, but it's going to be big.” He says. “They have been waiting months for this. I suspect it will be long and boring, with much talking and too little to eat and too few pretty girls.”

You quirk an eyebrow. “Don't you already belong to Rosalie anyway?”

He laughs. “Oui, but this does not mean I cannot look!” he grins and shrugs. “Besides, I have found nothing so beautiful as ma rose.”

“You know you don't have to turn on the charm, right?” you ask. “I mean, she's not actually here, or anything.”

He laughs. “Oui, perhaps not, but one can never be sure. And telling the truth is fine, even when no one is around to hear it.”

You laugh with him, then shake your head. “Starting to get loud out there.”

“Oui. The press, I am sure. And the public, it is open to them, afterall.” He says. “This is why I am thinking it will take some time. They will wish to talk about our heroism and bravery to inspire more to serve.”

He shakes his head. “This is the worst of it, but what can a soldier do?” He shrugs.

You're about to respond when a staffer comes back and motions to the both of you. “We're ready.” he says, simply.

Jeanluc sighs. “Once more into the breach, oui?” he says, looking over at you.

You nod, looking over at the girls. “You'll be ok back here?” You ask. They both nod.

“Ok. I'll be back as soon as this is over, ok?”

They both nod again.

Well, at least they're consistent, you think. If you could just get them to talk more.

And that's it for the night! I think nine hours is plenty, what about you? hahaha.

So, just to reiterate, there will be no thread next week. at least, I'm not planning for one, I don't expect to have internet back by then. If I do, I'll let you guys know via twitter.

In the meantime, I I'll drop my pastebin here- it's got two rough Raikov chapters and one edited one. Word of warning, edited takes precedence over rough in the hierarchy of canon- so if something changes in an edit, the newer version is correct. usually this is just names and stuff, typically minor or the result of typos. I'll still post the edited, full version in PJW, as usual.

Pastebin here
http://pastebin.com/u/Ghostdivision

Anyway, that's it for tonight. I'm planning a thread Thursday, but it may not run, it's heavily dependent on me getting out to knock out all my running before anything, and judging by my list of shit to get, that could take some time. I'll keep everyone up to speed on twitter, though, so keep an eye on that.

So till next time (Whenever that ends up being, hahaha) I hope you guys enjoyed the run and Cheers!
