[Fate Points: 3]

You are Victor Kane, Sentinel Cadet and Savant. You’ve just finished walking your fellow Cadet and Savant friend, Ivy, back to her dorm, whereupon she gave you a kiss on the cheek before running inside.

Still a little stunned, you wander away, thinking over things you should do. Contacting Major Cyril, your mentor, would help in getting out of classes for the rest of the week so you can put together a Special Forces Team. Or, you could just search for members now and talk to Cyril later. The Academy Archives hold records on all kinds of things, but you’d need Cyril’s help in accessing student files. Alternatively, you could just ask around for the most competent members of your class. That should work, theoretically. The last Option would be just to wander around campus and hope for something interesting. You could go take a look at the teaching halls, the administration buildings, the Research Labs, the Dining Hall or the Training Fields.

The time is 1600. You are standing outside the Dormitories.

"So, we know we're going to have a squad, which means recruiting more members... which means I'm going to need your help pouring over student files, or at least gaining access to them, unless you want to choose the other squad members yourself."

Also, what abilities do trainers bonded to dragon-types get? Like Clair, or Lance, unless that's sensitive information.

You decide that talking to the Major is probably the best idea at the moment. You head over to the Main Administration building. The brick building itself is rather squat and narrow as the vast majority of the building is underground. That’s pretty much the standard for most of the buildings on campus, aside from some of the newer ones, like the Dorms. Entering the building brings you to a very spartan waiting room. The Receptionist sits behind her desk and there are several chairs set up in front of her in rows. You walk up to the woman and take stock of her. She’s rather young with odd red streaks through her hair. Dark eyes behind steel-framed glasses look up at you as you approach.

“Yes?” She says in a no nonsense kind of voice. Her tone is sharp and her eyes bore into you. “Can I help you?”

“Yes,” you reply. “I’m looking for Major Cyril.”

She raises an eyebrow at you, “The Major is a very busy man. Why are you looking for him?”

The woman’s other eyebrow rises up to join her first. “Bartholomew is taking on a protege? Now that’s some noteworthy news.”

Cyril’s first name is Bartholomew? Huh, go figure.

She presses a button on her desk and a holographic screen pops up on the table. A few touches from her fingers and she’s looking at a map of the Academy. Another touch highlights a small portion of the map.

“It looks like he’s by the Training fields.” The woman answers. “When you see him, tell him Venus would like to see him at his earliest convenience, would you?”

She gives you an incredibly sharp smile.

“Uh, sure.” You reply. “Got it.”

“Good boy. Now run along.”

You decide to get to the Training Fields immediately. The campus is still active, even though it’s getting kind of late. A lot of younger students seem to be heading back to their dorms and common areas as they’re let out of class.

At the Training Fields, there’s still quite a bit of activity. Lots of advanced students are still sparring and you note some Rangers doing unit exercises. You can see Darius assisting a group of younger Cadets with their exercises, his massive form sticking out from the crowd.

Cyril himself is standing on the edge of the Fields under a copse of trees. He appears to be observing some Cadets from your class who are sparring in one of the smaller fields. You note that Katrina is among them, wielding a long single edged blade in one hand and a throwing knife in the other.

As you watch, she catches the haft of her opponent’s halberd with the longer blade while supporting it with the knife. She holds for a moment before rolling forward at an angle, putting her behind her partner. Spinning rapidly, she touches the blade to the back of her opponents neck. He immediately freezes and lets his halberd drop to the ground. Katrina says something you can’t hear and steps away.

Looking back to Cyril, you see that he’s tapping on something in his Pokegear. Now is probably the best time to approach him.

He looks up as you walk closer and a corner of his mouth twitches upwards. “Victor! How’d your date go?”

“That’s good,” Cyril says. “Now, I doubt you came just to tell me about that. What do you need?”

”I’d like to ask you about setting up a Special Forces team.” You say without preamble.

Cyril blinks and then his eyes narrow.

“I didn’t know for sure but you just confirmed it.”

The Major’s glare is hard as the steel in his soul, but you hold fast. You have to bluff and bluff well if you don’t want to get Ivy in trouble.

"Sir, no offense, but do you think I'm dumb? I doubt you'd introduce me to another Savant -- as cute as she may be -- just to get all buddy-buddy with.” You say. “ I think you and I both know better. Now, will you be assisting me, or will I have to find my squad members myself?”

“Boy,” Cyril growls. Crap, he’s still pissed. “You’re not a half bad liar but I’ve broken men who were far better at it than you. Now tell me the Truth.”

Shiiiit, that did not work. Okay, time for Plan B.

{Uh, Geist?} You send out.

{Yeees?} The Haunter responds. {How may I help you Victor? I’m currently on my way back to you, if you’re wondering where I am.}

{Yes, I may have made a mistake and I need to blame it on you.}

There’s silence on the line and you note that the Major’s glare is only growing in intensity.

Over the mental link, you get a sense of exasperation. {What kind of mistake?}

{I said something that I shouldn’t have known about and I want to use you as an explanation for why I know about it.}

Now there’s amusement. {Ah, but that’s what I’m here for. Do as you please, Victor.}

>[Cont.]
>>
>>37981957

You swallow, raising your hands in a placating gesture. “I have a perfectly valid explanation for this.”

“I’m waiting.” Cyril growls. “And it better be damn good.”

“I kinda, sorta, bound a Ghost Pokemon?” You say, cringing slightly.

The Major blinks. Twice. “Huh.”

Slightly emboldened, you press onward. “Yeah, Geist was snooping around and saw your recommendation to make me a Team Leader.”

Cyril’s glare has abated somewhat but he still looks a little skeptical. “Where is this ‘Geist’?” He asks.

“He’s on his way here.” You reply. You can feel the Haunter approaching from the south, making a beeline straight for you.

Less than a minute later, Geist’s face pokes out of the shadow of the tree, looking up at you and Cyril. You gesture to the ground, and Cyril’s glare abates upon seeing Geist, although his frown grows deeper. Geist just gives him a lazy wave before dissolving into a black mist that flows into your body.

“Why didn’t you mention him before, Victor? The Major asks you.

“Because, ah,” you tug on your ponytail nervously. “ I sort of...only bonded with him just before I met Ivy.”

The look Cyril gives you is pure incredulity. “You’ve been bonded with Geist for just two hours?”

You nod. “He's been following me around ever since my dad died. He’s been on the lookout for me for all that time.”

You quickly explain how you met Geist, how he begged to be bound after telling his story and the encounter with Agatha right afterwards. The incredulous expression fades from the Major’s face and is slowly replaced by a grim frown.

“I didn’t expect that bag of bones to be out and about.” He mutters.

You wouldn’t expect Cyril to badmouth a member of the Elite Four, let alone Agatha. But he probably has his reasons.

“Anyways,” you say. “I wanted to start building a team. I just need to look through student records to start that. And an excuse to get out of class for the rest of the week.”

Cyril raises an eyebrow. “You sure you want to miss out on that?”

“Yeah.” You respond. “I don’t think we’re really doing anything important.”

“That’s true.” Cyril nods. “Do you know what you need when you’re building a team? And do you have anyone in mind?”

forget if you posted them already, but what levels are our 'mons at? I can guess them from their evolutions, but mostly want to know how close Geist is to Gengar since we're not doing trade evolutions
>>
>>37983704

I believe I mentioned before that I dislike using levels since they're too structured and rigid for what I have in mind. Evolutions have certain triggers and conditions that need to be filled out aren't dependent on level at all.

I'd say that Shellshocker is in his lower 40's, Cobalt is in her upper 30's, Geist in his mid forties and Terra around level 5.

The real issue is how the abilities, forms and types of Pokemon affect things. A young Onix is always going to be a powerful opponent due to the sheer mass behind its attacks and can easily kill an opponent of a much higher level, like a Nidoking.

Not to mention that Pokemon do age and die.

Dragon type trainers get a few boosts. Physical abilities go up and they gain an aura of influence. They also develop some personality traits such as increased aggression and pride. However, a good number of these traits depend on the dragon they are bound to.

“Other than that, either someone who can do Stealth and Recon or separate people to do one each.” You continue. “I might have someone in mind for stealth but its a big school and I can't claim to know every student here."

The Major crosses his arms and gives you a knowing look. “It’s Katrina Leighton, right? She’s definitely a skilled cadet and she does have a Stealth specialization but she’s known for being abrasive to practically everyone.”

You frown at the thought of Katrina being an Assassin. It’s not a particularly wholesome career choice.

The color drains out of Cyril’s face. “Oh goddammit.” He pinches the bridge of his nose. “Thanks for letting me know Victor. Anything else?”

“No, sir.” You say, snapping off a salute. “Thank you Major.”
The Major returns the salute. “Any time Cadet.”

You make your way onto the Fields themselves, walking along the gap set between two of the squares. Darius appears to be done with his class, now just talking with some of his students who have stuck around. He sees you approaching and says something to the kids. Darius’s eyebrows rise and he scratches his beard. “Well, it’d be pretty nice. I’m getting the feeling this isn’t a vacation though.”

“Nope. You’re going to be helping me find two more members for our team. Preferably Stealth and Recon.”

Because she's kind of a bitch. We don't want to commit to her being on the time by asking her to join, but maybe a second conversation will change our minds.
>>
>>37986597

"Funny thing, I mentioned her to Major Cyril and he told me she was one of the better Stealth focus cadets as well.” You say as you walk towards Katrina’s field, Darius at your right hand. “Though he mentioned she's better suited to being a Stalker, what with how abrasive she can be.”

“Abrasive is putting it mildly.” Darius rumbles. “It’s like she does her best to offend everyone. But she’s good. Really good.”

“Though after our scuffle this morning, she may outright refuse any offer I make.” You continue as Darius grunts in agreement. “Let's just get a better feel for her first, maybe see her in action and what Pokemon she has. We've got a whole week and Cyril gave me access to the Archives so really we have the entire school to choose from."

“Well, you know me Victor.” Darius says as he eases his maul back into the harness on his back. “I’ll follow you lead.”

“Thanks Darius.” You say. “Lets not mention the Special Forces offer just yet. Lets start off with what she wants to do after graduating.”

Darius nods and remains silent as you approach the field Katrina is training on.

She’s dueling two other Cadets at the same time, her blade and knife against a rapier and broadsword and kite shield. She’s graceful, swaying and curling through the attacks of her enemies and knocking aside their weapons when they get too close. It’s a pretty impressive sight and you and Darius take a few minutes just to watch her match. Sweat drips off her brow into her eyes, but she doesn’t flinch. Her muscles are taut with furious energy as she continues her whirling dance.

Eventually, the two Cadets wisen up a bit and manage to attack with better synergy. A series of thrusts from the rapier wielder brings her into the range of the sword and board fighter and she barely escapes the horizontal slash from his broadsword, bending her knees backward to bring her upper body parallel with the ground. As she straightens, the shield wielder charges forward, bringing his shield to bear down on her in a vicious slam. You think for a moment that she’s done for.

>[Cont.]
>>
>>37987946

You couldn’t be more wrong.

With an incredible display of athleticism and coordination, Katrina runs up the face of the shield and pushes off, flinging herself towards the rapier wielder. Flipping in mid-air, she flies right over his raised sword and slams her booted foot right into his forehead and rides him to the ground. He hits hard, and Katrina immediately jumps up, spinning in the air to launch her knife at the shield wielder’s face. He brings the shield up just in time to deflect the thrown blade. Too bad he had to block his line of vision to do that. Katrina rushes him as soon as her feet touch the ground again, staying in his blind-spot. She reaches his shield and grabs the top of it with her free hand, pulling herself up and over the other Cadet to land behind him.

Her blade is immediately at his throat and you hear her hiss “Yield.

The Cadet immediately drops his sword, screaming “I yield!”
The grin that spread across Katrina’s face is fierce and proud. It reminds you of a predator that has just finished a satisfying hunt. She withdraws the blade from the Cadet’s throat, immediately sheathing it in the scabbard at the small of her back. Leaning down, she picks up her knife from the packed dirt and secrets it away in her clothes

>>37988008

She walks away from the defeated pair, towards where you and Darius stand.

“So,” she says, stopping in front of you and placing a hand on her cocked hip. She’s flushed, breathing heavily and rather sweaty but she’s obviously very happy.

“Enjoy the show?”

Stop. We just got thru telling Darius we're waiting on that call, quit jumping the gun just cause other people want to explore all our options first.

"So are you always such a bitch all the time, or is it just me?"

"Of course.” You reply. “I'd be lying if I said I wasn't impressed, although after seeing that I'm not sure if I should be insulted or thankful with how much you held back during our fight this morning.”

“Believe me, I was tempted to go all out.” Katrina interrupts. “But I figured that killing another Cadet was bad idea all around.”

“Where'd you learn to fight like that anyway?” You press on, ignoring her jab at you. “Your style is fluid and precise but you bring an almost animal like ferocity when the moment is right."

The female Cadet tosses her hair back. “My brother was an excellent teacher and I’ve had plenty of practice. It’s a family style, supposedly honed for generations.”

“What are you even planning to do with all that skill anyways?” You ask.

She shrugs. “Kill people mostly. It’s not like it’s good for much else.”

“Now,” she says as she narrows her eyes at you. “I know that practically everyone avoids talking to me if they can help it so why are you and the meathead here?”

Darius, to his credit, just smiles at her while crossing his arms.

"Because honestly you don't seem that bad, maybe a bit of an abrasive bitch sometimes but I doubt that's who you really are. So is killing people all you signed up with the Sentinels to do? "Well one of our instructors asked us to conduct peer reviews to see how closely our assessments matched up to theirs.” You answer.

One of Katrina’s eyebrows rises as she gives you a skeptical look. Next to you, Darius coughs in a highly suspicious manner, as if masking something.

“Meathead here,” you say while gesturing to Darius. “Thinks you're one of the best in our year but that ‘Does Not Play Well With Others’ tag might drag you down. I'm trying to decide if I agree."

Katrina snorts, “If I honestly cared about working with others, I’d probably try to make friends. You’re also wrong about me being ‘One’ of the best in our year. I am THE best.”

Looks like she’s a little full of herself too. But she did thank you for covering for her after the fight this morning. Maybe she’s not all that bad.

Behind Katrina, Shield Guy has helped Rapier Guy off the ground and to one of the benches on the sideline. The few other matches going on continue without interruption, although they’re all one on one fights.

>[Cont.]

>>37989030

“Honestly,” You begin. “You don’t seem that bad. Sure, a bit of an abrasive bitch sometimes, but I doubt that’s who you really are.”

“Oh wow!” Katrina exclaims in a cutesy voice, clutching her hands together in front of her and raising one leg off the ground. “You’ve seen through the bitchy exterior to the soft and warm-hearted girl on the inside!”

She drops back to both feet and unclasps her hands. “Get real, dumbass. I don’t like people.”

You decide to try another angle. “So is killing people the reason you signed up with the Sentinels? I mean its fine if it is, but if you ask me it just seems a bit of a waste of talent.”

“Good thing I didn’t ask you.” She growls, crossing her arms. “What the fuck do you want?”

“What do you want to do when you graduate?” Darius rumbles. “Where would you go?”

Katrina snorts. “I’ll do what every other Sentinel does. Get an assignment, complete it to the best of your ability, move on, rinse and repeat. Where will I go? Wherever I’m supposed to. What’s with these stupid questions anyways? Did you just come here to bother me?”

>>37989044
"Fine, truth be told I was looking for some cadets to form a team for a future assignment. I can't go into details but when I was looking for someone skilled in stealth your name kept coming up. Sorry for wasting your time, I'll look elsewhere. See you later Katrina, good luck with your rinse and repeat solo career"

>>
>>37989044

Well, it looks like she is in fact an incredibly anti-social person. Definitely not a team player. She’s probably better off with the Stalkers after all.

“No, I'm trying to see if you can work at a higher level without letting your bitchy attitude get in the way of working with others.” You reply. “I'm beginning to think that won't happen."

You turn to your friend."Looks like you were right, Darius. Come on, let's go find someone who might actually be useful."

As the two of you walk away, you toss one final remark back to Katrina. “Good luck with your rinse and repeat solo career.”

You can feel Katrina’s enraged glare on your back as you make your way back onto the campus proper.

“That went… badly.” Darius mutters.

You grunt in response, feeling too angry to articulate a real response.

The Academy Library is another squat brick building with practically all its floors below ground. The only way for any Cadet to access the Archives is to use the computers there. You’ve actually spent quite a bit of time here, reading old stories and epics of times long past. Darius on the other hand hated going to the Library avoiding it like the plague. It’s not that he couldn’t read, it was that he got extremely bored when he did.

Upon entering the library, you’re greeted by warm lighting and a room absolutely stuffed with bookshelves and books. The Librarian’s Desk is hidden under several towering piles of books and is dangerously close to collapsing under their weight. Or at least, you think it is. It was like that when you arrived at the Academy and it’s been like that for years since.

Walking up to the desk, you smile a little to yourself when you hear Darius yawn. He’s rather predictable. There’s a small bell next to the Librarian’s desk and you ring it and wait for a moment. You hear a faint pop and then a tall and thin white haired man wearing heavy robes and glasses steps out from behind one of the shelves.

You grin at him when he sees you. “Hello Lucien.”

He smiles back. “Hello Victor. How can I help you today?”

“I’d like to access the Archives.” You say.

“Oh, whatever for?” He asks.

Pretty difficult but still technically doable. You would have had to essentially bite back like you did before. Answered her insults with more insults. Oh, and kept at it for a little while. She would have gained a measure of respect for you.

She does technically have Anti-Social Personality Disorder, but circumstances have led to her being decidedly restrained about it. Verbal abuse is generally as far as she takes it while at the Academy but she has gotten in trouble for fighting before.

And I'll be running at 1400 EST... today, technically.

When you manage to knock his Husband and Daughter out of the most cherished place in his heart.

Dragons are fairly rare, but it honestly depends on the type you're looking for. Dratini? Super rare everywhere. Bagon? Only in Hoenn. Gible? Only in Sinnoh.

The chances are pretty low unless you're actively searching for them.
