You manage to get it working and then you tell them about your conversation with Ash, and how he might be best suited to getting details out of Quinn. Lirael boots up a game and picks up a controller.

The last few days have been pretty crazy, a day with your friends sounds really good right now.

With the games console up and running you spend some time playing some older videogames, ones you remember vaguely from a very young age. Lirael gets the hang of them but Rainya is slower to pick it up.

Rainya manages to beat you both when she plays 2 parts of a 4-person vs game though.

“That’s cheating!” howls an outraged Lirael

After video games you head out into the Hive to do some clothes shopping, since you’ll be living here for the foreseeable future. Mindful of your still limited funds you head for cheaper stores, but still spend a long time looking at outfits.

You’re standing in front a huge forbidding estate. There are high walls, active cameras and elaborate metal scroll works all over the place, and spikes, lots of spikes.

It’s night time and the few street lights outside don’t really illuminate the place, more just outline the darkness. You can see perfectly, thanks to your owns powers of course.

“It’s not that spiky in real life” says Ash “So this is Quinns dream realm huh?”

“What is it?” you ask

“The Crimsonthorne estate” says Ash “Sort of at least, just...creepier. Alright, I guess I have to find Quinn.”

Quinns dream realm is very different to yours, and you reflect, probably consistent with someone who hates and fears his family. Even though Quinn isn’t your friend, this place could do with a few changes. As you think that, water starts to drip from your hand, the droplets splashing against the paving stones. You realise you could make this yours, changing things to suit you really is a part of you after all, and Quinn is no friend.

“Compared to them” says Kae “Quinn is your best friend. Beastmen won’t threaten to kill or rape or eat someone, they’ll just do it. The army commanders will probably give them strict instructions *not* to go into the Hive and the goblins and therianthropes will try it anyway, and the others will be quite happy to travel a hundred miles on foot to attack the dusters for fun.”

“That sounds less like an army and more like a disaster” you protest.

“Oh they’re a plague walking upright are the beastmen” says Kae “They were created to be tough, savage and brutal, and utterly obedient to the fae, other than that, no one cared about giving them compassion or self-restraint.”

“Why here” you say “Why now?”

“Money and politics” says Kae with a shake of her head “some rich idiots thought it was a good idea, and now its too far along to stop, not even the King could stop it now.”

You notice the shadows around you getting longer, some so dark that you can’t see into them. Nothing is happening yet, but maybe your presence here is not completely unknown.

“So they’ll be coming through the Worldgate soon” you say grimly “great...”

“As soon as they untangle the chaoswell from farming and turn it into a ‘Gate” says Kae “yes.”

Your reply is forestalled by Ash coming out, shaking his head.

“No Quinn?” asks Kae

“He’s in there” says Ash “But he’s terrified, he looks like Quinn did at 10 or so, and whenever I try to get him to talk he screams that his sister will find him if he does. You want me to keep trying?”

“Well that’s for the best, right Kae?” you look at Kae, who is looking thoughtful.

“Maybe a change of scene” says Kae “Somewhere Quinn is more relaxed, and older, a nightclub maybe.”

“Can you do that?” you ask “I mean, won’t it be noticed?”

“Not if I’m careful” says Kae “It’s a risk, but a small one. It’s a scene change, not unheard of, and if I pick a club Quinn knows it will seem natural to his mind.”

“They don’t look like much” you say “just shadows”

“If they touch you...” says Kae “Well, don’t let them touch you ok.”

Some time later, you’re not sure how much later, Ash comes out, he clothes rumpled, he has several bite marks on his neck and he’s walking stiffly.

Suddenly every shadow at once leaps towards Ash even as Kae screams at him to shut up, coloured lights appearing around her hands and flying towards him.
