You're Clarissa, a high-school student currently acting as a Substitute Shinigami. Kimiko - the Shinigami you are acting as a substitute for - has been severely injured while fighting a Hollow, and she is currently residing in the body of your recently dead girlfriend, Aiko, for the duration of her recovery.

Earlier today you've been attacked by something other than a Hollow. The attacker fired bolts of light from afar, maybe a mile or two away, and bent the steel of your sword after you were forced to parry one of them. Luckily, you got away with only minor scratches and burns, and you managed to save the innocent spirit caught in the crossfire.

Chances are that you have a meeting scheduled with this very same attacker for midnight. You have less than twelve hours to prepare for it. With a bent sword, even if you manage to get close, you're not sure that you can beat him with fists alone, even if you're no pushover at martial arts.

There is no immediate way to fix your Zanpakuto, at least to Kimiko's knowledge. Recovery is meant to occur naturally, over time, somehow. You're not sure why or how a steel sword would just straighten itself out, but you're not going to argue with her. She did say that there may potentially be a way to perhaps speed it up somewhat, but, judging by the way she phrased it, she doesn't have much faith in the proposed method.

Though, it's not like you're left with any other options.

Kimiko leads you to the Yumisawa Children's Park (as it was the nearest park around) and takes a seat on the swing. Children are playing around, supervised by their parents. A high-school girl, in the middle of the day, still wearing her uniform, suddenly occupying one of the playground's more popular attractions, is drawing annoyed glances from the kids and suspicious looks from the parents.

And to them, it must also look like she's talking to herself.

"Take a seat, Clarissa. Yup, on the ground. Make yourself comfortable, this might take a while," Kimiko instructs you, smiling and swinging a bit. "Now, try talking with your sword."

"...Are you being funny, Kimiko?" You look at her with unconcealed skepticism. Kimiko stops smiling and tries to put on a firm, serious expression, but you can easily tell that she's trying really hard to keep that smirk of hers hidden. She nods and urges you to try it with a gesture.

Well...

"Uh... hello, sword."

Kimiko bursts into laughter. She very nearly falls off the swing, only saving herself by grasping the chains at the last moment. You glare at her, feeling your face heat up. You throw a few swears her way, but it only makes her cackle even harder.

She eventually calms down, taking a few minutes to do so. Most of the children were taken away by concerned mothers. Wiping away a tear, she finally elaborates, still smiling and breaking out into the occasional chuckle.

"I didn't mean literally! You need to speak to it with your mind, Clarissa. Like, meditation. You'll, uh... probably figure it out as you go. And take your time. This might take a few hours."

"...Will this work, or are you trying to mess with me again?"

"There's no guarantee. It could work, it could not work, I don't know," Kimiko shrugs. "Oh, this means we'll probably be skipping school. Well, Chappy has you covered, Clarissa."

>"I don't want to leave Chappy in charge of my body and social life for longer than I can help it. Let's go back."

It's not 'our' power, it's borrowed.

You place the battered sword on your knees, sit in the lotus pose (it's not really comfortable, but this is how people meditate in movies and that's pretty much all you know about it) and close your eyes. You keep your fingers on the cold steel of the blade, and pulse basic words and greetings at it. When it doesn't work and you open your eyes to report to Kimiko, she hushes you and tells you to try harder.

But nothing happens even as you spend fifteen minutes, then thirty minutes, then an hour, and then even well over that. Occasionally, you hear something, and you spring up with hope only to realize that it's some little kid passing by, or a cat messing around, or a car screeching to a stop.

There's one thing you know for sure - you've been focusing very hard. Hard enough that you're no longer annoyed by the chippering of birds, by the noises of the cicadas, by the creaking of the swing, or by Kimiko's quiet humming. The girl tells you to relax rather than concentrate as you tell her this, though you don't make any progress even as you change your approach.

The only thing that's changed is that the steel has gotten slightly warmer because of your prolonged touch. Your sword keeps its shape, not a single dent having mended itself.

Kimiko managed to last for three hours.

"Ah, you're hopeless!" She gets off her seat and takes the sword from you, studying it. "...I don't actually know if you can even do it at all. You're not a real Shinigami, and your case isn't common enough to have been researched. But it's my power, so that must mean it's my sword, right? Even if it doesn't look like it, it should still be the same."

She closes her eyes, her hand gently sliding along the distorted curves of the weapon. As the tips of her fingers slide past the sharp tip and end up in the air, Kimiko lets out another sigh.

(1/2)
>>
>>37950844
"Nothing. I must still be too weakened to do something like this," She gives you back the sword. "And you don't seem to be getting it at all, Clarissa."

She's berating you, but you think she's wrong entirely. You don't know how to explain it, but you think that the reason why neither you nor even Kimiko can make contact with it is because there's nothing on the 'other side' of this sword.

What you're holding in your hands is just a sword. A weapon. A tool. It's not that you "can't" tap deeper into it, it's that there's nothing to tap into.

This sword is made of steel and nothing more.

With a sigh, you relax, giving up on the task. Kimiko looks at her phone.

"School's almost over, but I guess we could go back if you really want to."

"I need to pick my body up, anyway..." You trail off. You raise your sword, letting its damaged blade flicker in the sunlight.

...

Also, if we succeed on whatever this is then it'll give us a reason to be smug with Kimiko.

As far as I know there was nothing to do if we went back but, time skip to the meeting anyway. We might as well take the chance of repairing our sword since we know some one is gunning for us. That just a sword thing might just be a mental block that is holding up our meditation.

Basically, my point is that we have no indication that talking to the sword some more will work. In fact, the only information we have points to the opposite conclusion.

"...I'll pass, Kimiko. I want to do this for a little longer. Give me a few tips." You lower your sword, looking at the girl. Kimiko turns skywards, hands kept behind her back.

"The Zanpakuto is part of a Shinigami's soul. Because your powers are mine, then that sword should also be mine... although, both of those things may very well be false. It doesn't fit, after all. Just think about it, Clarissa," Kimiko folds her arms on her chest, shooting you a serious gaze, though you're not sure if you can follow her as well as she expects you to. "When I first saw you, I was surprised that you could even see anything other than regular ghosts. And I didn't give you that much power, either - I was hoping you would pick me up and run. A Zanpakuto should reflect the wielder's spiritual power, usually through size, but I really doubted that with the amount of power I gave you, you would have anything bigger than a dagger."

Your eyes trail back to your sword. It's certainly no dagger. Before it was battered, its workmanship exceeded even Kimiko's sword. If a Zanpakuto really reflects the wielder's spiritual power, you'd say yours is stronger. But you don't think that's actually the case. You remember Kimiko's movements when she fought, and you're not sure if you could take on someone like her even now.

"Then this is my own power, not yours? How do you explain that, then?"

"Maybe my power awakened yours, somehow. Clarissa, I really don't know. It's not supposed to be the way it is. I've caught myself saying that a lot these past few days. I'm probably about as clueless as you are," She looks away. "The power given to you by me should have been all spent by now, long ago, actually, but you've made it through about three Hollow encounters and you're still just fine. And if your power really is yours, and if it's permanent to boot, then that's... troublesome..."

(1/3)
>>
>>37952200
"Troublesome, Kimiko?"

"Well, don't worry about it, really. It's trouble for me, not for you," She waves at you dismissively, smiling. "Just keep trying to talk to your sword if you want to. I'll go and keep track of Chappy to make sure it's not doing anything bad. I'll be back at... let's say an hour before midnight, unless you return before that."

You nod and sit down, placing the sword on your knees again. Kimiko starts walking away, turning back to you a few steps in.

"Just remember, Clarissa. If it really is your sword, then it's your only true weapon."

...

The hours trickle away. You're still in the park, though you can't bear to sit anymore. Not the smallest sign or omen of any spiritual progression on your side, and not the smallest dent or scratch repaired on the blade.

If it's just a sword, then it's not going to fix itself. That much is obvious. Or maybe you're in the wrong, and you just suck at this?

Rather than spending any more time on it, you decide to practice with your gimped sword for a bit. It's still a little sharp in places, but some pressure in the wrong place and it'll certainly snap and be done for. At the very least, you know how to swing it and potentially do damage.

Kimiko returns a little earlier than she said she would, bringing you food and drink. You managed to get so involved into trying to bend your sword with your mind that you completely forgot about those needs. No one in the entire world has a right to say that you weren't concentrating.

(2/3)
>>
>>37952227
After a filling pseudo-dinner of hamburgers, it's time for the two of you to head out, towards Karakura High's stadium. Kimiko chimes in to break a tense silence.

"So what's our plan, Clarissa?" She asks, eyes gliding over your weapon. You can't sheathe it, so you have to carry it in your hands. "...We don't have to go if you don't want to. I checked it, and the note didn't threaten you with anything."

...

Your plan is simple. Kimiko will take high-point and keep your covered, and you'll walk right up to him. The 'stadium' is really just a field, but the school building's roof will do just fine. Kimiko told you to yell for her if you need help, but also to not rely on it too much. She is, after all, supposed to be recovering.

Getting into positions themselves is a triviality. You easily jump over the school gate even while carrying a girl in your hands, and for you, getting into the yard is just a matter of phasing through a few walls.

It's dark. Only the pale half-moon acts as a source of light. It's quiet. Kimiko is too far for you to hear, and the shadowy silhouette ahead, although clearly turned towards you, is not uttering a word. It's tense. You can feel a glare. A pair of eyes must be intently staring you down, as if judging every your every move.

The silhouette seems to be quite warmly clothed for the season; even the night, although chillier than the day, probably doesn't warrant this kind of get-up. You can make out something akin to a coat, and you're fairly certain you're seeing the visor of a cap.

It's lighter than it looks at first glance, actually; the intention of the outfit does not seem to be warmth, but rather, concealment. Like a person who doesn't want to be remarkable, or maybe a person who wishes to remain unrecognized even when noticed. A thug, a criminal, or maybe just a recluse; someone who wants to be left alone and unbothered.

You've certainly never seen her in that outfit before.

Little by little, you're getting a better picture. You can't see in the dark, but your eyes are still adjusting. The silent staredown lasts for about a minute, though you're quite sure that the other side has long finished observing you.

You realize that all this time, you've been watched with only a single eye.

"Just tell me this, Naoko - that man from before, the one who was running from the Hollow... the monster. Were you aiming for him, too?"

Naoko doesn't flinch: not her intense gaze, not her calm posture.

"I was."

Your fingers grip your broken sword harder. Naoko's eyes dart towards your white knuckles, but only for a moment. With a glare, you urge her to explain. She remains silent, as if she has nothing else to elaborate on.

"Why?" You urge her with a question this time, and her eyes seem to widen a bit in surprise. As if she doesn't know why you're asking.

"They turn into monsters, Hollows, as you called them. I kill them to prevent that from happening. After all, what difference does it make? They're already dead. Their life has ended; they shouldn't linger in the first place. It's so selfish, too," Her gaze is now tinted with contempt, though does not seem to be meant for you. "They want to spend a few more meaningless moments in this world, trying to continue 'living' their finished lives in hopeless denial, only to end up threatening and harming innocent people. I won't let them take such a risk. It's not their choice to make. The dead should never have power over the living."

Her eyes are filled with more emotion than you've ever seen her show for as long as you knew her. It's an unconcealed, fiery hatred. Yet it is not aimed at you.

Something suddenly clicks in your head. Your eyes widen in worry.

"That girl at the dojo... Setsuko... did you..."

She answers without hesitation, almost with eagerness.

"Yes. I killed the ghost at the dojo as well."

Her words hold no regret, no pity. They're cold and uncaring.

Naoko has recomposed herself. She's just as calm and just as quietly inquisitive as you remember her back at the dojo, and the moment she first spoke to you here. However, she seems hesitant, as if she doesn’t want to talk about this.

"That's because I've learned what you and your kind really are. I know how dangerous you really are, so I took the chance when I was given one."

"I have no fucking idea what you're talking about, Naoko. I'm new to this, and this... this isn't permanent."

Her eyes widen again, slightly. She seems a bit relieved. She seems almost happy to believe you.

"Is that so? If you're really saying the truth, then I'll let you go. If you were forced into this because you were manipulated or coerced, and if you're still able to live normally as a human being, then I don't have any reason to fight you," Her sharp eyes look skywards, behind you. "But that one isn't the same as you. She or he even went so far as to possess another. I'll get rid of that one."

"No." You take a step as Naoko tries to move forward, placing yourself in her path. A little more than 10 meters are separating you from one another.

"You don't know what she did, do you? 200 years ago, she and her kind slaughtered an entire people. The Quincy, I believe they were called. All of them were living humans, and they committed genocide on them. The Shinigami don't only govern the dead, as they try to claim. They also get involved with the living whenever it suits them, and they commit whatever atrocities they wish. Why wouldn't they, after all? There are no consequences no matter what they do. I hate that. It's that selfish thinking again. 'I'm dead already, so I can do whatever I want.' Step aside, Clarissa. I won't ask again."

Naoko is growing spiteful again, her voice brimming with hate. In her demand lies a clear threat.

This
>>
>>37955417
>>37955444 This is me
We also mention re-incarnation or some such? I'm not sure she's aware of it.

>>37955518
Ehh I'd back you but something tells me shouting and being belligerent will just get us stonewalled
>>
>>37955503
We just have to convince her otherwise!
>>
>>37955518
>>37955560
She doesn't know about the afterlife yet...

>>37955417
>>37955444
Go off of this.
>You've been killing ghosts permanently! Did it never occur to you that maybe there was a real life after this one, where they go before they're turned into hollows? Or have you been just doing whatever -you- please in the name of a 200 year old grudge.

>And yet you think you have the right to say 'I hate that kind of selfish thinking' ?"
>>
>>37955417
>"I don't find murder is usually a great first solution to problems, unlike you apparently. Seems like your own philosophy is more like 'They're dead already, so I can do whatever I want'."
>>
>>37955417

>>37955444
I forgot if we know this in character or not. If we do then this. If not then this.
>>37955657
>>
>>37955417
>She isn't possessing anyone...she's...empty and already gone.
>No violence. Not here, not now. Sit, talk, all this shit on the table.
>>
>>37955685
I think we had that discussion like a thread or two ago. Hollows eat people they're gone. But if you sword them or boop people on the head they're good.

>>37955634
Not bad.

But... it comes off more as an attack than an attempt at reasoning. You might push her to stonewall.
>>
>>37955685
We do, Kimiko has explained it several times to us when we asked where souls go after Konso and what happens to hollows we kill.
>>
>>37955736
I made it a bit like an attack, because that means she has to focus on us. If we just try and convince her to talk her problems out she's going to ignore us to kill Kimiko.
And then we'll have to find out what to do with Aiko's body... again.
>>
>>37955417
Voting over, counting votes and writing!
>>
>>37955779
Couldn't have tried for the more sappy stand in front of her and tear up because one of our and possibly our best friend is a soul destroying monster?
>>
>>37955808
I really don't think she cares about sappy, from what I got she's a very logic/anger driven kinda girl.

Could be wrong, but we'll see what happens. I don't think my write in will be picked.
>>
>>37955892
Nah I think mine had the most votes. Still hope we work something out.

It's a bit of a mishmash though. We might see things drawn from all of them. Not sure we've ever written in for Mushroom before.
>>
>>37955931
Let's get a late night morality debate going on up in here.

Given her philosophy, she is gonna fucking HATE the truth about the first Quincy and the true nature/purpose of her powers.
>>
>>37956180
quincy king is a dick[\spoiler]
>>
>>37956180
Perhaps, but we have to convince her we're telling the truth first.

I think she'll probably rationalize it as 'the evil shinigami told you so it must be a lie. There's no way my pure and holy ancestors could even do anything wrong!'

Silly anon, it's VERY important for 40% of the page to be a close-up of a hand and cross-guard that's hard to make out even WITH context. And who can forget the expressive face panels?

That ducking sword.

draws normal physical sword/spirit foci. Summons a giant fucking spirit now in the sky. Now shoots a massive arrow into the ground in from of him...it's actually a giant spirit arrow sword...WHAT THE EVER LOVINGFUCK!

I can only imagine if this dialogue actually happened in cannon.

"Well if you really have to know boy, My sword can obliterate anything with a touch, cloak my body in invisible and invincible heat armor, re animate any enemy I've ever killed ever, and can pull of a sufficienctly over powered version of getsuga tensho."

>>37955444
"Naoko! You were killing innocent fucking souls! They were supposed to go to the afterlife, not die again! If you just let me explain it, I'd fucking do it, you idiot!"

"I trust you, Clarissa. I really do. But... but I'm sure the Shinigami would tell you anything just to get you on their side..."

"But it's true! You were permanently killing the souls, and they were supposed to move on to the afterlife, not fucking die again! Soul Society is a nice place, too, there's no fucking threat to them, and they just continue to live normal lives!"

"Shut up, Clarissa... I... my demands-..." Naoko's eyes waver, as if tempted to look away.

"I'm telling you to listen to me, Naoko! Do you get it yet? You're not fucking supposed to kill those ghosts! You're destroying the spirits, getting them out of the reincarnation circle, and you're supposed to let them go to the afterlife and let them spend the rest of their lives in peace and-"

"SHUT THE FUCK UP ALREADY!" Naoko desperately shrieks. The girl's breathing turns erratic, and her gaze, previously unmoving from your eyes, now frightfully looks towards the ground.

Her hand moves to her chest and grasps an object. She's wearing a cross, one that you haven't noticed in the dark, not until its silver material reflected the moonlight. A wave of unease suddenly washes over you, as if the air turned into drops of rain, pelleting down at you from above.
>>
>>37956683
It doesn't last for long, this unease. You get used to it fairly quickly, but... it could not have been a good sign.

Naoko raises her hand. Blue light gathers around her wrist, dancing, flickering. It then solidifies in a single flash, manifesting in the form of a white glove. The flash repeats around her other hand, and then around her feet, forming something akin to shoes.

She assumes a martial art stance. It's a stance you're quite familiar with, and yet you've never seen it supplemented with such an aggressive, hateful glare, mingling desperation and tears.

And this time, that hatred really is aimed at you.
>>
>>37956707
Hmmm, well that could have gone better.

Well, it's no contest. She is already stronger than us even without powers and she obviously has more experience with her powers than we have with these borrowed powers...so if she's going to straight up try to...we can't beat her.

This isn't a fight...this isn't an accident. This is knowingly murder. She may not know she was doing it before...but now can she? Can she kill her own friend who can't really defend herself? She doesn't want that on her conscience...and we'll tell her she doesn't.
>>
>>37956829
...I know the old man's pain
>>
>>37956976
I just wish it hadn't escalated to this. I mean we're in a drop the sword and beg her to just talk scenario.
>>
>>37956976
Our only chance is the early anime art of guile and trickery that gets replaced with power-levels.
>>
>>37957038
Thankfully, it's too early for power-levels so that still has a chance!
>>
>>37957038
I really would prefer to talk her down rather than try to "trick" her.
>>
>>37956683
>>37956707
>Leave to go grab a quick dinner
>Come back
>Update has been posted and anons have voted for a write-in basically just short of straight up smacking Naoko across the face
So it's going to be one of these quests, is it?
>>
>>37957261
Actually.

>"You've been killing peoples souls before they go to the after life... we need to talk about this.. we can avoid her but you and I need to come to some sort of understanding first."

Doesn't really seem like it was meant to be hostile. But Mushroom apparently made it more hostile because individals like >>37955518
>>37955634

Thought being nasty would be a better idea.
>>
>>37957361
Therein lies the problem. If I can't miss a single update without having the majority of the other players shitting the bed for literally no good reason, it's a powerful disincentive to getting involved at all.
>>
>>37957576
Well then maybe we can ask Mushroom to stick to the majority instead of incorporating bits. Hell the problem may have been that someone said "Yeah I ADD ON TO THAT! WITH HATE AND SPERG!"

I really don't get the logic that being a bitch is the only way to get through to someone.

That or the character is too bitchy to handle things calmly.
>>
>>37957745
Looking back he DID kind of link to a write-in that was almost 100% different than what ended up being written, so there's that. I'm not just unhappy about it, I'm honestly a bit confused as well.
>>
>>37957800
Yeah I know I wrote it so I was confused as to why the
>you idiot!
>you're not fucking supposed to kill those ghosts! You're destroying the spirit

Granted. That may be Clarissa's personality. She may be blunt/less than tactful.
>>
>>37957745
We beat our girlfriend to death with a lead pipe didn't we?
>>
>>37957857
All signs point to maybe.
>>
>>37957845
She does seem blunt, but verbally attacking her friend *repeatedly* feels like a different matter.
>>
>>37957857
I want to go back and compare the ghost we saw getting eaten in thread one to The picture used for Kimiko's meat suit.
>>
>>37958017
I see it this way, she was planning on killing Kimiko anyway if we didn't stop her. Now she's focused on us instead,

And despite all of the anons bitching and moaning about how we're destined to lose, we actually do have a chance of winning in a straight fight in our spirit form.

First of, everyone please remember, THIS IS STILL HER HUMAN BODY. It still has all of the normal limitations of a human body. And since she's implied that she is 'the last quincy' all over again, I think we can assume that she probably doesn't know how to speed herself up using reishi, and the way she's channeling her power suggests that she's only giving herself a physical attack boost against spirits.

Remember that in the dojo we could see her blows coming, even if we couldn't counter them. Well now we can counter them. Yes I know that this is assuming she hasn't gotten a major boost in speed, but even ishida didn't have quincy flash step (or at least didn't show it) until the Rescue Rukia ark, despite how useful it would have been earlier.

And finally, the only reason she would be this angry over our accusations is if she knew we were right and was trying to deny it to herself. Thus All we have to do is get through to her and she'll break down, and on top of this the anger she's feeling will cloud her judgment and mess up her style.

I'm not going to claim that this is the best outcome, but please stop bitching like it's the end of the world just because it's 'SPERG' (i.e. not what you wanted).
>>
>>37958335
Well.

1. It wasn't what won the vote.

2. We "could" win combat but that wasn't the desired outcome.

3.I don't think anyone was bitching like it was the end of the world that's hyperbole.

So yes I'm a bit upset that 'SPERG' (i.e. not what was voted for) won.

>Open the door quietly
Gets the majority of the votes.

Some one tacs on KICK THE DOOR OPEN GODDAMNIT!

And that's what we get.
>>
>>37958335
Quit trying to defend the indefensibly stupid decisions that were made by trying to make it all about how people must be "butthurt" to call stupidity what it is. And quit talking like you somehow know exactly how a fight would pan out, because what you're not concluding through metagame knowledge you appear to be assuming.
>>
Everyone, let's take a few chill pills. I don't want to see another Bleach related Quest brought low and it's players to blows.

Mushroom is still coming into his QMing, let's not drive him to burn the crop and salt the earth.
>>
>>37958481
>Quit saying anything that goes against what I KNOW is right. Quit trying to support the opposite side because I say it's stupid.

Because there could be no other possible outcome than us getting trashed in the fight with Naoko.
>sure.jpg

>Quit talking like you know how the fight would pan out
>you're not concluding through meta game knowledge

You're incorrect on both counts actually.
1) I'm not saying I know that's how the fight will turn out, I'm providing an plausible route the fight may take. We may get our shit kicked in, however we won't necessarily get our shit kicked in with 100% certainty. Hence my other outcome

2) as for my 'assumptions' about her powerlevel, let's take a good look at the earlier episodes of canon.

Would 'Quincy flash step' have been useful when Ishida accidently summoned several hundred hollows to Karakura town? Yes it would have been. However, we never see him use it once during that entire battle.

When does Ishida first use 'quincy flash step'? In his fight with 12th division captian Mayuri in the soul society. There are two major differences between those battles.
1) Ishida is in the soul society, there is a much larger amount of reishi in the air, meaning more spirit particles for him to work with.
2) He has the special quincy glove that increases his ability to manipulate said spirit particles.

Now what does this mean for Naoko?
It is easy to see that she's in much the same boat Ishida was at the start of canon. She's the "last quincy", and as such (just like Ishida) she probably has limited to nonexistant training. Therefore, it is not unreasonable to believe that she is on the same level, or near to it, as Ishida was at the start of canon. She has no glove, she's not in the soul society, so it is reasonable and supportable to claim that she probably cannot use quincy flash step

Make sense?
>>
>>37960695
#2 needs to be changed to "he completed his training with the special Quincy glove that disrupts his ability to gather spirit particles"
>>
>>37960886
That's true, sorry for the mistake.
I was running out of space so I had to make the post more concise.
>>
>>37960995
Fair point...but for some reason it irks me when people say the glove is the powerup instead of learning to work around it
>>
It's not the 'attacks' that got to Naoko, it's forcing an explanation even when she didn't want one!

Explaining things to her seemed to be a common thing in some of the write-ins, so I went with that.

Naoko trusts Clarissa, so it's a bit hard on her right now.
