As Rainya waits at your side you take the time to scan the building for psychic influences, first making sure that your powers are undetectable and then you teleport in with Rainya, again after hiding your powers.

Once inside you and Rainya head deep into the police archive building. You’ve love to carefully hack these machines and steal the data without anyone noticing, but you need to be out of here before the alarm system finishes rebooting, so you and Rainya simply pull hard-drives out of computers for later decoding. Once you have enough, you head to the basement, where Six said there was some special machine hidden.

As you head down there you see a light on. You motion for Rainya to stay where she is and you creep down the stairs, quietly as you can. Peering through a crack in a partially open door you can see a room full of boxes, evidence storage room perhaps. In it there is an old Hiver man, maybe sixty or so, and behind him is a computer, sitting all alone in a corner.

The old man is ticking off items on a list, opening boxes on after another, examining the contents, sometimes making notations, and then closing the box and moving on to the next one. Possibly inventorying the place, or looking for something important. Why he is here at 1am you don’t know. But he’s right next to the computer you need to steal info from.

The entire room is packed with shelves, and lit by a single light. What do you do?

Sadly this is entirely true of my luck.

You sneak into the room and whilst no more than a few feet from the old guy, you carefully open the computer behind him and slide out all of its hard drives, and without him noticing. You then close up the case and you head out. You wonder how often the computer is accessed, you theft might not even be noticed for several days.

You and Rainya make it out of the building with over 2 minutes to spare and then you fetch Lirael so you can all head back to the Waystation, with your stolen harddrives all held securely in your dimensional arsenal.

“What do you think is in them?” asks Rainya with a yawn, as Lirael heads to bed.

“I don’t know” you say “but I expect we’ll find out, g’night Rainya.”

“I am” you say, as the sea creatures thrash in confirmation “but not at you, I think this was aimed at me, and I’ll deal with it.”

“Oh” says Kae “ok, then why...?”

“I need to get into Quinns head” you say “before we try anything else, offering him sanctuary, infiltrating a party with elder vamps, I think we should try reading his mind first.”

“In his dreams you mean?” asks Kae “That’s, ah that’s complicated.”

“You can’t take me with you, can you?” you say “I knew it, damn, sorry Kae I’ll have to find another-”

Kae jumps down off the wreckage into the water “No it’s not that” she says “I can get you in, but if Quinn can’t tell anyone, that means someone one has protected the information, locked it up in his head.”

“So what?” you say “He can’t speak it even in his dreams?”

“No” says Kae “He will be able to say it in his dreams, because he won’t realise he’s talking to another person, he’ll think he’s talking to another part of his own mind, in a sense, going into his dreams might be the only way to get the information out of him without tripping whatever defences are protecting it.”

“Ah good” you say “Can we go now? I mean, I expect Quinn will be asleep right?”

“In order for this work” says Kae carefully “Quinn can’t suspect that his mind is being invaded, or he could wake up, or the traps in his head set to protect the vampires identity could be activated.”

“What’re you saying?” you ask Kae

“I’m saying” says Kae swallowing “That we have two options, either I get you in, and watch for the defences, but won’t be able to do much else – you’ll need to convince Quinn to tell you. Or, I can go in alone to get him to talk.”

“Which has the better chance?” you ask.

“If I get you in” says Kae “I can watch for the defences, maybe warn you before they trigger, or slow them down if they do, but I’ll be so focused on that I can’t help you. Still I should be able to cover you. If I go in alone, I’ll be too busy talking to Quinn and pretending, to watch out, if only we had another telepath, but, anyway, it’s just us Shee.”

“Alright” you say, mulling over the decision “I guess that-”

“Wait” says Kae “there’s more, as I said, if Quinn realises we’re in there, it’s over, whoever is talking to him has to act....the way Quinn would expect us to act...in his dreams.”

As you draw back with a disgusted expression Kae says “Yeah, it’s just that bad, so what do you want to do?”
