“Maintain the journal.”

You close the tome that contains all of your grandfather’s notes on what he entitled the “Second Realm” and stand up.

The old and abandoned residence of your deceased grandfather has been your home for a few years now. You’re not limited in the slightest in empty houses to choose from, but somehow you feel that you have more of a claim to this one, so here you are.

You are Sophia, young and quick-witted, you elected to become what the diminishing humankind would label as an “Occultist.” Mind you, this was because the backbreaking toil of farming, and the dull endless journeying of scavengers did not appeal to you in the slightest.

You walk over to the dusty window.

Perhaps society, or what’s left of it, would attach a stigma to your chosen profession; If only most occultists didn’t end up dead before they even began. The precise words and timing of crucial incantations have only been successfully completed by a very small group of people; recorded by even less. The ritual ingredients, while not terribly hard to come by, will raise a few eyebrows when asked for.

You’re left wondering what forces chose these arbitrary requirements and what forces dole out the terrible consequences of not meeting them. If you had not found your grandfather’s extensive notes on the subject, you’d likely have a different profession.

You inhale and exhale deeply. It’s almost time for your first attempt to enter the second realm. Your fingers absentmindedly trace over the object you found tethered to the tome when you first found it.

The broken compass spins in your fingers. You really out to throw out the thing, but you have some sentimental value for it considering it was your grandfather’s

The heavy dust of the room irritates your throat into a cough, so you decide to step outside to catch some fresh air.

Sunset has always been your favorite time of the day, and the multi-colored vista takes your mind off the important task that’s ahead of you.

You lean against the dilapidated front gate and breathe deep from the clean outside air, closing your eyes to further relax. You keep your thoughts positive. All sorts of objects from the second realm have always fetched a hefty price, bringing something back might make getting food on the table a lot easier. All that needs to be done is have a trader transport it to the appropriate markets.

“Evening, Soph.” A familiar woman’s voice calls out to you.

“Speak of the devil…” You mutter and open your eyes.

In front you stands a girl a few years younger than you, with short blonde hair. She’s wearing one of the strange masks that scavengers sometimes wear.

“Does that thing even work, Ali?” You lean forward, inspecting the old world object in front of you.

“Dunno.” She peels off the mask. “It can’t hurt. Right?”

“If you say so.” You return to leaning against the fence.

Ali gives your answer a small smile. “Today’s the day, right? Finally putting a use to all that weird stuff I brought you?”

“This work is crucial...” You answer, trying to steer clear of the less inspiring details of your work. “And If I ever become really successful from this, you’ll be to thank.” You lump her in with your work to discourage her from questioning the more questionable details of it.

“If you say so.” She responds. “Anyway, how do you feel about your first time? Isn’t that where most of you guys die?”

You sigh and give her a look of annoyance. You haven’t put much thought into how you feel about the journey, there was too much preparation to do. You don’t see why it matters, but pause for a moment and consider that you feel…

“Excited, actually.” You look up to the setting sun. “It’s been a lot of work just getting here, and I intend to make a name for myself.”

“Good for you!” Ali responds cheerfully, readjusting the heavy rucksack that she carries everywhere. “Going at it solo?’

“Alone is conventional for the first time, so that you don’t…” You pause to choose your words carefully. “Cause harm to others if you mess something up.”
“Ohh.” She looks at her feet solemnly. “Well I should be heading off now, I’ve got deliveries to make.” She grabs her mask to pull it over her face again. “Be careful in there, Soph. Sometimes it’s better not to know what’s happening behind the scenes.” The mask covers her face and she walks away.

You wave your goodbye, she may not always comeback at the same time, but you know that she always leaves around this time.

No sense in dawdling anymore.

You return to the inside of the house and proceed to the room where you set up the ritual.

A large tub of goat’s blood sits in a metal tub with exactly sixteen candle surrounding it. Water works for this too, but your grandfather’s notes say that blood increases the chances for success.
>>
>>37887726

All objects are in place, the time is right, and you're well-practiced.

It’s time to begin.

You light the candles, remove your clothing, and stand in the tub with a single black candle in your hands.

“Ugh.” The cool blood sits at your knees and sends a chill down your spine.

The chant comes out of your mouth without much thought. You’ve rehearsed this so many times before, that now it’s second nature. You lower your body as you continue to chant the words in the strange language you’ve never heard anyone speak other than yourself.

You're not nervous, not anymore. You excitedly think of your success and nothing else.

The blood reaches your navel and you feel an intense itching at your nose. A hell of a time to have to sneeze, you should have dusted this place beforehand. Any interruptions in this ritual could have terrible results.

There can’t be any interruptions in the ritual.

You continue your steady chant while flexing your nose in various ways to try to discourage the sneeze. The faces you’re making right now are probably horrendous and you try not to think about it.

The blood reaches your chest as you feel the antique compass that’s strewn around your neck lose its weight.

The itch in your nose is almost maddening now and the flexing is beginning to affect the intonation of your chanting, but you must endure it, you’re almost finished. The timing is just right as the blood finally reaches your chin, you can feel the sweat in your hair from how hard you’ve strained yourself.

The final word is uttered as your mouth crosses the blood, and you breathe a sigh of relief through your nose as you lower the rest of your head and as you slip from world to another the last thing you remember is a wet and violent sneeze.

~

The ground is cold and incredibly uncomfortable, keeping you from sleeping anymore. Wait.

You open your eyes, you take in the strange and unfamiliar world, but ultimately, you rejoice. You’re alive! You stand up, and take in the sights.

The world is filled with giant floating rocks, defying all logic you have gained over the years. You’re likely standing on one yourself.

The world is filled with giant floating rocks, defying all logic you have gained over the years. You’re likely standing on one yourself.

Behind you way back, that your grandfather wrote about. Simply a pool of pitch black water of unknown depth. The compass that you had around your neck is still there, surprisingly without any blood stains on it at all.

In fact your whole body is free of blood, from skin, to white hair, and even wings.

Wings?

You quickly turn your head back at the sight of two large red feathery wings now protruding from your back, and also rub your newly colored hair in between your fingers.

There was no mention of this at all in the journal, perhaps it’s a result of the sneeze, or something else entirely? It must be recorded later, this is something new entirely.

Your heart beats wildly in excitement, and you take a moment to collect yourself.

Regardless, you should get moving, it’s suggested that one not spend more than a few hours here at a time, but what happens if they do wasn’t written.
Far in front of you lies a pool of vividly blue water and behind you is the entrance to a large cave with some sort of light source emanating from inside, likely fire.

You find it strange that the compass materialized just fine in this world considering that your grandfather and other occultists go on about how nothing other than the body will pass through the portal.

You observe the compass and find it to be actually working now, and points toward the pool of black water. The pool of black water is the way to return back to your world, while you don’t think you’ll venture far on your first trip, it’s good to know you will always know the way to get back.

You find the light emanating from the cave comforting and decide to head towards it.

The pattering of your bare feet hitting the ground sends quiet echoes seemingly throughout the whole entire cave. You try to flex your new wings and find that the respond, slightly. You’re not flying any time soon, that’s for certain.

The cave narrows and you find what was producing the light. A small unattended campfire sits in front a small run-down wood cabin. You carefully approach one of the broken windows and peek inside.

The interior is as messy as the outside. Inside sits a strangely pale man surrounded by various moths and dressed in tattered clothing. Blood stains the wall next to him and various decorations the like of you’ve never seen before.

You quickly hide yourself, before you are seen. Taking one or two things from the inside of the cabin back home with you would be an undeniable score. But you’re hesitant to enter, while it was written that not all inhabitants of this second realm are evil, there’s no real way to tell outwardly.

The urge to learn more about this world and take home something of worth calls out to you. But doubt also exists, telling you to turn back.
Perhaps you can outsmart this creature, you've had your share of practice in your world, could it be any different in this one?

Nothing ventured nothing gained, right?

You open the door and see that his smiling face soon turn into one of surprise.

“Oh, I thought you were a human, excuse me.” He tries to clean himself up and then stands. “Can I help you? Looking to buy some relics or something?” He says in a tone of almost admiration.

Why would he care that you’re human? You decide it’s probably better that he doesn’t know and carefully construct your words. Relics?
You cross your arms. “You better have something worthwhile, I didn’t come all this way for nothing, but I will if you’ve got nothing of note.”

“Fine, fine.” He responds, growing angrier, but not suspecting your true identity. He walks over to a broken cabinet and looks at the contents inside. “Business has been poor, so all I have is a Fidelis Stone and a Vigor Leech."

You can’t even begin to guess what those two things might be used for or how you would even begin to pay for them.

“I might be interested, it depends on what you’re charging for them.” You answer in a nonchalant manner.

“Well aren’t you charming?” He pulls out a strange clear jar of leeches and a small pouch. “The leech for two of your feathers, the stone for five. Both of them for six, you’re not going to get it any cheaper out of me.”

Again, only more questions. Six of your feathers doesn’t seem so bad. You’re certainly glad that you have some form of currency.

“I guess I can agree to that.” You respond trying your best to sound like you begrudgingly accept.

“Swell.” He places the items next to you, and then pulls out a very sturdy and large looking set of pliers from his cabinet.

He pulls a small stool forward and motions for you to sit in it.

You accept his offer. “Business has been bad, huh? You short on supply of these things.” You point to your back.

He stands behind you and firmly grasps one of your wings. “Can’t find anyone brave enough to pay the full price. Shame since they’re the best catalysts.” He answers and hands you a tattered piece of leather. “I’ll do three from each. Good luck.”

From how firmly he’s grasping your wing, the piece of leather he offered you, and his words earlier you quickly piece together what’s in store for you.

You shove the piece of leather in between your teeth and give him a nod.

You didn’t think it was possible to regret something so much.

A scream shoots out between your clenched teeth as it feels like he’s tearing deeply rooted limbs from your skin. Again, and again, and again. Tears stream from your eyes as you ball your hands into tightly clenched fists.

By the last feather, he lets go and you collapse to the ground.

[1/2]
>>
>>37892234

He puts away his newly acquired feathers and pulls you up by your armpits. “The pain has passed, here.” He places your newly acquired items in your lap, and places one of your hands on top of them. “Take a few moments if you need it.”

You calm your quivering breath slowly. “S-so these things. How do I best use them?” You ask without your usual subtlety.

“On humans, of course.” He answers quickly.

“Right.” You exhale tiredly. “Seen any of them lately?”

“Two, separately. I couldn’t convince them to come inside.” He sighs bitterly.

“How unfortunate.” You stand shakily to your feet. “I’ll be going now.”

The strange and simply nods his farewell and you step out of his cabin, with your new items.

Your wings press against your body as you walk. The ground feels cold against the bare soles of your feet, likely due to your whole body heating up from the pain.

You return to the black portal. You’ve explored quite enough today, and are eager to return home to record your findings and rest. With your two items secured against your chest, you dip yourself into the pool of black water.

While you did succeed in procuring objects from the second realm, it wasn’t without a cost. You’re now extremely wary of
