Today's school lunch feels... tense. Your 'best' friend has been acting strangely ever since she found out that you're (supposedly) dating a girl; the most truthful thing about that statement in your current situation is that you're into girls, which seems to be the main problem, as your supposed partner is someone Ren has never even met before, at least not until they accidentally bumped into one another last night while you and Kimiko were out on a patrol.

"Are you sure you're okay, Ren? It feels like I'm botherin' you or somethin'."

"I said I'm fine!" The red haired girl very nearly shrieks and turns away.

An awkward silence is the response to Ren's loud reaction. She seems to realize that she overdid it, and starts fidgeting a little bit.

"Somethin' happen between ya?" Akemi decides to perk up first.

"No!" Ren immediately denies it, yelling out before you get a chance to put a word in. "I mean... well, Clarissa knows what's going on!"

The girls all look your way, waiting for an explanation. You shrug.

"Nope, I don't know what you're so mad about. I said I'm sorry for not hanging out with you the whole summer, so what else can I do?"

"I forgave you for that! I'm talking about that -other- thing, and you know what it is! I'm sure you do."

"Well, if it's what I think it is, then I dunno why you'd be mad about it."

"Is that so? You're not even trying to deny it, so it's true, isn't it? Well, I-I'm not going to start that topic."

"Just say what your problem is, Ren. Stop acting all pissy about it."

"It's your secret, so I'm not going to bring it up first." Ren pretends to go back to her lunch, as if 'closing' the conversation.

Another silence hangs in the air. Everyone seems to be curious and yet too scared to say anything.

>"Are you some kind a homophobe, Ren?"
>"Is there something wrong with me dating Aiko, Ren?"
>You don't want to make a show; don't bring it up with everyone here, see if you can settle it alone with Ren.

Its neck and neck...next few votes decide our fate.

How will this play out?
>>
Damn, because I already voted. Come on, guys. Lying about shinigami stuff is one thing...but this kind of behavior with our best friend can only eventually lead to ruin...

Especially with Kimiko having the Social talents of a Potato with a smile painted on it.

If she's not it may reassure her for now but coming out later would cause an even bigger commotion.

You let out a sigh as you poke your rice with chopsticks.

"There ain't a secret, Ren. Aiko was just pranking you. I'm as single as the rest of you." You tell her. It's not really lying, it's just... you're not saying the whole truth, either. Aiko's dead, so you're technically single.

You hear some gasping, unironic this time, and mostly done by Akemi.

"So you two were almost about to fight because of a boyfriend? Haha!"

Ren seems to be caught off-guard by your statement, momentarily giving you a wide-eyed stare, which then shifts into one of utter fury.

"I knew it! She was lying! Damn that... that... stupid fox!" While yelling out apparently the most insulting thing she managed to think of, she hits her own knees. "I'm sorry, Clarissa! I thought you were... I thought you were hiding that you're... uh... that you're dating someone."

"Really? That's what bothered you? So you're not bothered by-..."

"No, no, of course not! It's just... I thought you didn't trust us enough to talk about it, or something, so I got a little upset. But... I guess I'm glad I was wrong." Ren seems to finally calm down, sighing in relief and smiling.

She soon arms another glare directed at something behind you, though. You turn around, spotting Kimiko.

"Clarissa, could I borrow you?" She mutters and shows you the greenish screen of her phone. The device is beeping, and there is a blinking yellow dot on it.

It's a Hollow.

"I'll be right back." You tell your friends, though you're not entirely sure that you can keep that promise.

"...Explain it to me again. What does this candy dispenser do?"

"It kicks your soul out, and replaces it with an artificial one. It means that while you're out hunting Hollow, your body will still be alive, moving and interacting with others. It's like you never left."

"And it's called... Soul Candy?"

"Its official designation is Gikongan, but I like Soul Candy more. Well, if you're not comfortable with it, then I guess I could just manually rip your soul out with my glove. It's just that your body might be found. Unless, of course, you want me to keep it safe while you go out to hunt on your own."

"Are you sure that no one is going to figure out that it's not actually me?"

"I wouldn't know, Clarissa. I can't guarantee it, I didn't make this stuff."

Liltotto Lamperd, Sternritter 'G', is an interesting character. She shows little in the way of remorse for her actions and also is quite young to have the wisdom that she does possess regarding everything that is going on around her.

Was she a child born into the Vandenreich's shadow city or was she someone found by Bach after the Selection of Quincy. She appears too young to have been alive during the selection...so maybe she is the child of one of the survivors who wound up on death's door like As Nodt, Sternritter 'F',

"Right, slow down for a bit, Kimiko. Let's test it first. If it looks fine, then I guess I'll go with it."

"Okay, but we don't have too much time to spare. Say 'ah', Clarissa."

You open your mouth, and Kimiko pushes the candy dispenser's soft-looking bunny head, ejecting a small sphere out of it. You swallow it.

It takes a moment for it to work, but your soul pops out of your body, and it remains standing rather than limply dropping to the floor, though it does hang its head and wobble around for a moment, probably disoriented. 'Clarissa' then stands properly, issuing the real you a cheery salute.

"Clarissa is ready and good to go, pyon!"

"She really does sound like me, but she doesn't really... feel like me, you know? What's with the 'pyon', anyway? Is she pretending to be a rabbit? I don't talk like that."

"I will work hard and do my best, pyon!"

"I'm telling you to stop that!"

"I'm sorry, ma'am, pyon!"

"It's fine, Clarissa," Kimiko tries to reassure you. "People believe what they like to believe, so I'm sure you won't get into any kind of trouble. No one will ever guess that you're a Shinigami. Anyway, let's go, we have a Hollow to kill." She takes out her phone and moves to open the janitor closet's door.

"Hold it; I didn't make up my mind yet."

"Ah, just let Chappy handle it! Chappy knows what it's doing, it was made for this, and besides, you could stand being a little cuter. ...And it was pretty expensive."

...Well. At least Naoko isn't around to see through your body-swapping shenanigans.

After quickly giving the artificial soul a few reasonable, simple rules (to which Chappy nods and affirmatively 'pyons' profusely), you and Kimiko dash out of the school building.

...

You pass through Karakura's busy streets, soon approaching the site of a traffic accident. A massive truck has flipped on its side, nearly crushing another car underneath its cargo. People are trying to be helpful - a pair of volunteers has pulled out the vehicle's unconscious driver.

Kimiko pulls your sleeve, saying that the Hollow is just around the corner. You sprint ahead.

A man's terrified shriek pierces the street. It is deafened out by the screeching roar of a Hollow.

The soul of the truck driver you had seen just moments ago is running away from a green Hollow in the form of a half-snake, half-humanoid; as you approach closer, you notice that the Hollow's limbs are replaced by massive talons, each one at least as tall as you.

You leap, hopping on air several times in order to gain more altitude. You flourish your exquisite sword and raise it in preparation for a slash. Your body clad in black draws an impressively wide arch through the air; with both momentum and surprise behind your attack, you're certain that you can slay this Hollow in a single blow.

A blue light glows behind you, its brightness rapidly increasing with each passing moment. It's causing a strange, loud noise that resembles the flickering of flames and the whistling of a loosened arrow, both mixed into a single loud buzz. A sensation of growing warmth suddenly pours into your back, giving away the danger of the incoming projectile. You plant your feet into the air and jump aside, performing a flip to gain speed. The miniature shooting star flies by your side, soaring towards the Hollow.

You manage to land on your feet, thrusting a palm into the ground to make the landing more stable. If the projectile was just a little faster, you wouldn't have gotten away. You can barely make heads or tails of the current situation, but a sense of imminent danger urges you to act fast.

You turn your head towards the souls. The Hollow wasn't as fortunate as you - there is a gap as thick as an aging tree in its massive mask; the bone and flesh melted into a gooey substance under the heat of the bolt. The monster begins dissolving into the air, but something doesn't feel right about its demise. Rather than moving on, the soul fades.

There's no time for that right now. You catch a glimpse of the shining blue light with the corner of your eye; the attack has not been launched yet, but only moments remain.

You see something else that demands your attention.

It's the soul of the dead driver. The blue bolt only faded after piercing through his right shoulder, leaving him with a barely attached arm. The poor man drops on his stomach, his body quivering in silent agony.

His Chain of Fate has been melted by the bolt, and only inches of it remain. Not only that, but the chain is still melting; corroding. You have a feeling that nothing good is going to happen when it reaches the center of his chest.

"PERFORM A KONSO, NOW!" You hear Kimiko scream at you from behind.

You sprint forwards, feeling another shooting star pierce the air the moment you raise a foot. You can't stop now, or it'll kill you.

You grab the spirit and leap. The bolt passes by your shoulder blades and burns the back of your sword-wielding right arm.

But you avoided it. For just a few moments more, you're safe, until the attacker is ready to fire another one of those arrows.

You put the bottom of your hilt against the man's back. You were never good at performing konso, and your skills are not at all better under this much stress. Precious moments are wasted before the spirit begins to glow with the blueish light that heralds its passage to Soul Society. It takes a few moments more for it to actually fade. Finally, he's gone.

But the pale blue glow is still present, coming from another source.

There is no time to evade. It will surely connect. But at the very least, you have the chance to make it connect with something other than your own torso.

You swing your sword at the orb of light. The projectile halts, colliding with the sharp edge of your Zanpakuto. The strain on your arms is immense - it feels like you are trying to stop a train with your bare hands.

Your skin is trying to melt under the warmth of the star, but you're not letting it, limiting it to minor burns across your arms. You don't know how you're doing this; it's like you're shaping your 'spirit' to resist the influence of another 'spiritual force'. That force is stronger than you, so damage is still going through, but it is negligible in comparison to what could have been.

With a yell and a push of your blade, you disrupt the sphere. The power explodes with overwhelming brute force, sending you into a flight further down the road.

It was sudden enough to make you drop your sword. You search for it, and you find it almost instinctually. The blade is bent. You pick it up, regardless. Even if you can't cut anything with it, you can still use it as a shield again.

The shooter is preparing another one of those bolts. The bright light is surging in the distance, on the rooftop of one of the apartment buildings. The distance, let alone the blinding glow, is already enough to conceal the attacker.

Again, there are only moments to act.

You sprint through a wall, hiding within the safety of an apartment building. That bolt could probably easily pierce through these walls if such a need arises, but it's useless to do so without a line of sight to hit you.

You continue making your way closer to the attacker by phasing through walls, leaping across the alleys separating the buildings. You spot Kimiko down below during one of those leaps; she's probably using the alleys for cover as well.

The attacker is a long way off; you never had to measure distances on a glance before, so you really can't make any kind of accurate assumptions when it comes to range. You can still get there quickly because of your Shinigami form, but it'll take time. And because it'll take time to get there, you'll have to peek out and show yourself to the attacker occasionally so that he doesn't just lose interest. You move upwards when you phase through your fourth building, quickly reaching the roof through a mixture of airhopping and intangibility.

You don't see a glow or a silhouette on any of the rooftops, even as you linger for a while longer. Did they figure you out, or did they just give up once you became something more than an almost stationary, highly confused target?

With the tension gone, exhaustion floods through your body like an injected drug. Didn't Kimiko mention something about going through walls and pretending to fly too much? This is probably what she was talking about. Or it may just be a coincidence, as you had to catch the equivalent of a tank shell with (almost) your bare hands just a short while ago.

You've been standing around for a minute, and the attacker still hasn't taken the clear shot. Either he's plotting something, or he's gone. Pursuing the attacker isn't really possible, as you don't know what he looks like. You haven't 'sensed' him ever before, and neither has Kimiko, so odds are, it's not something you can do.

(1/2)
>>
>>37864172
You return to the girl, who is still hugging the wall of an alleyway with her back.

"...Is it safe?" She asks, at which you shrug.

"If we just stick close to buildings, we'll probably be fine. Were you planning on doing something about that guy?"

"Not really. I couldn't have done much, at least not without pushing my recovery back a few days as payment."

"So, what the hell was that?"

"I... have no idea. I've never seen anything quite like it," Kimiko folds her arms, looking at the ground in contemplation. "But either it's someone vicious enough to use an innocent person as bait to get to you, or it's someone with a grudge against everything spiritual."

"So it's not a Hollow? You gotta at least have theories about what it is, right?"

"Of course. But if they're right, they won't provide us with any helpful information; and if they're wrong and we assume incorrectly, it might end up harming us. It's just speculation that I won't cloud your head with for the time being, Clarissa. Not until I have something good."

You show her your bent sword.

"You think you can, uh, repair it before midnight?"

"I can't repair it. It should fix itself, eventually. How long that might take, though, I don't know. It's okay, we'll skip today's patrol if we have to. It seems that Karakura Town has yet another guardian... though I sure hope I'm wrong on my assumption that he hates everything spiritual."

You want to show Kimiko the note, but... you don't actually have it on your person. Well, not on your Shinigami person. You explain it to her in words, though, and that you suspect that this same attacker is also responsible for the note.

"Oh. I guess we might need to think of a way to speed it up after all." Kimiko mutters with disappointment, looking skyward.

"You, uh, mentioned you got all your stuff from a shop, Kimiko. I dunno what the hell kinda shop it is, but you think they could fix my sword?"

"Not at all. And we can't buy another one, either. It's all on you, Clarissa. Well... I've got a plan. Let's see if we can make this work."

Say, has your speed been improving?

Did Rabbit Clarissa establish, confuse, or otherwise ruin any relationships, pyon?
>>
>>37864834
I had a pretty clear scene in mind for today, so it was easier to write!

>>37864858
We'll probably find out soon, pyon.
>>
>>37865000
Sigh...because it's saying Pyon we now have THAT personality inhabiting us.

...I wish it had been Kon.
>>
>>37865131
What's wrong with someone who says Pyon? It's a cute tick. Granted it's no Nya.

It's weird. Kon is a full on Mod Soul...while Nemu is just a standard artificial soul with an enhanced Gigai.

wait. Does that mean that Kon with his Mayuri enhanced body was at Lt level or higher as of his appearance in the final arc? And then he got left in the Royal Realm at Kiriko's palace...the inventor of the Artificial Soul. Kon is now viable combatant tier, maybe on par with Big Damn heroes mode Renji and Rukia. Wait. Nemu was given a Zanpakuto. Why did they never give Kon one?

The end of episode Omake's are really the best. A fine combination of fourth wall breaking and short comedy.
