"Move! Move!" You kneel down next to a rock formation and wave your team over. It won't do much to stop tank shells, but it will keep you hidden. "Kreuss, what's our status?"

Leifstel and Schreiner plant their shields down to cover your flanks, while Garcia braces her machine gun against the rock to look out for advancing troops. Kreuss unfolds a map and everyone else gathers around her.

"We've reached the Imperial army's left flank," she says. "The main Gallian force should still be in a fighting retreat. They should be able to go on the offensive once we've forced the Imperials to commit forces to their flanks, but it'll take some time."

To prevent the Imperial army from laying another siege against Ghirlandaio, the Gallian army decided to interdict them. It's an extremely dangerous manoeuvre, but if you can pull it off, you'll completely crush the Imperial offensive in northern Gallia and the Gallian army will be free to commit forces elsewhere.

"Sir, there's a tank coming our way," Garcia says. "It's escorted by two shocktroopers."

"It's time to get to work," you say.

>"We'll fight them from behind cover and get rid of the shocktroopers first."

"We'll flank the Imperials first," you say. "Nelson, the Imperials are bringing a lot of tanks with them, so make your lances count."

"I never miss, sir," he says.

"Good." You turn to the rest of your team. "We'll start by flanking the tank. Garcia, lay down suppressive fire. Leifstel and Schreiner, keep your shields covering our flanks. Kreuss, keep an eye out and make sure we don't get ambushed."

You run out of cover. Leifstel and Schreiner slow you down a little, but Garcia's machine gun fire forces them into cover in the tank's front. The tank slowly rotates its turret to track your movements, but it's always a few angles too late and all its shot miss. Which is good, because those shells look liked they'd hurt a lot.

William runs slightly ahead of your team and slides into position behind the tank. He fires his laugh, laughing like a maniac, and hits it right in the back. Not only does the tank explode, but it flips over completely, landing on the two shocktroopers Garcia had forced into cover. You see their legs twitch once or twice, but it's clear that you don't need to waste time confirming the calls.

"Excellent job, Nelson." You help him back up and pat him on the shoulder.

"Honestly, sir, it was beyond my expectations."

"I don't mind if you raise your expectations a bit then." You look around. Gallians and Imperials are fighting everywhere around you, but none of them are paying attention to you right now. "Let's see, our next target…"

"Sir!" Kreuss yells. "There's someone from our side heading here."

You turn around to see Captain DuLac's "friend" running towards you at full speed.

"Lieutenant!" He yells. "LIEUTENANT!"

He practically crashes at your feet, gasping for breath.

"Take your time, private," you say. "The war's not going anywhere."

"Captain sent me." He wheezes. "Need help. Ernestine went to kill enemy commander. We were cut off."

"And Captain DuLac needs to focus her efforts on the flank and can't spare the people to link up with her," you finish for him.

"We're not really in a position to mount a rescue operation ourselves, sir," Leifstel says.

"It's probably not a rescue operation," you say. "She can just hide from enemy troops until the battle's over. But if she's still hunting her objective…"

The rest of your team is needed here, but you should be able to find Ernestine and back her up.

You look at your sniper rifle, then at your team, then at the battlefield. You don't want to leave your people behind, but this is open warfare with massed formations. Your talents can best be applied elsewhere.

"I'll go after her," you say. "Private, can you tell me where she went?"

"She went through the mountain," the private says. "She went up a hidden tail near an old shack, but with the fighting retreat, the Imperials were able to overrun it."

"Thanks, I should be able to find her. Go tell your captain." You turn to your team. "As much as I hate to leave you all behind, this battlefield isn't my kind of outing. Hell, it's not even what this team was put together for, but we still need to do our job. Schreiner, you're in charge. Keep Nelson safe and do what you can to put pressure on the Imperials. Understood?"

"Yes, sir." Schreiner raises his sword in a salute. "I won't fail."

With that, you head for the mountain.

You are Second Lieutenant Karl Schreiner. After having lost your team, you were reassigned as the nominal executive officer of another team, although it was so small that your position never really mattered all that much. Now is your chance to make up for your previous failure and prove your worth as a commanding officer.

"What are your orders, sir?" Leifstel asks before anyone else on the team speaks. You take that as her vote of confidence.

"The Gallian army is still pulling back to stretch the Imperials out," you say. "Our job is to weaken the Imperials' flank so they have to call reinforcements from their main force. That's our objective. As to how we're going to accomplish that…"

"We'll set up an ambush first," you say. "After that, we'll try to pull them in with a fighting retreat. The more we stretch out their soldiers, the better."

Identifying the battle lines is not actually possible. Soldiers move back and forth and around so that one moment, the Gallians are surrounded by Imperials and the other, the Imperials are flanked on all side. Still, the Gallians are slowly moving back towards the fortress, including the forces harassing the Imperial flanks. After all, things will go badly if they become isolated.

You pull back a little bit closer to the fortress and climb a short distance up the mountain to set up your ambush. Your whole team finds cover behind the rocks or just over a small cliff.

You don't need to wait very long for your first target.

A dozen Gallian troops run by just under you. They're followed by seven Imperial scouts, who are doing their best to prevent the Gallians from running. It's clear that the Gallians are in full retreat, at least until they can find some time to patch up and regroup, so they won't be able to help you against the scouts. On the bright side, you won't have to worry about harming them in the crossfire.

It looks like the scouts will be in range of your ambush spot soon.

You raise your sword high up and swing it downwards.

"FIRE!"

Garcia, Kreuss and Stroheim immediately open fire on the Imperial scouts, who hurl themselves sideways into the nearby bushes without even bothering to look at you. They return fire, but they can't hit any of you from their current angle. However, now that they know you're there, they might be able to reposition and get a shot at you.

"At least we gave those other Gallia troops a break," Leifstel says. "What now, sir?"

You keep your head down to avoid the Imperials' fire, while Garcia sustains her suppressive fire in order to pin the scouts down. It's not going to last forever, however. Even though Kreuss and Stroheim pick up the slack when Garcia needs to reload, they'll show an opening eventually.

"Prepare a mortar strike on my order," you say. "Gunners, be ready to fire full volleys to cover up the sound of the mortar."

It takes a few minutes for your mortar team to judge the angle and load. Garcia maintains a lighter barrage to save her bullets without giving time for the scouts to move away. When the mortar team indicates they're ready to let loose, you motion for Garcia, Kreuss and Stroheim to fire as quickly as possible.

The mortar launches pops behind you and the explosive arcs towards the hidden scouts, the sound of its flight completely covered up by the sound of gunfire. The mortar lands and explodes into all-consuming azure flames. Some of the scouts died instantaneously, but others survived long enough to run and roll about in a futile attempt to put out the fire. In the end, their efforts amount to nothing. They just burn.

"That looks clear to me," you say. "Kreuss?"

"The Imperials are all dead, but I think I see something else coming towards us," Kreuss says. "It looks like an Imperial tank. They have some soldiers with them, but I'm not sure how many."

Your current ambush spot is now less than ideal. Even if they didn't hear the explosion, it won't be hard to spot the carbonized corpses and the still-burning crater.

"All right, we're pulling back," you say. "I don't want to get cut off from the rest of the Gallian army."

"Yes, sir," Kreuss says. "I'll bring up the rear and keep an eye out for the Imperials."

"Good," you say. "Garcia, back her up. Stroheim, you're in the middle. Leifstel, Nelson and I will be the vanguard. Let's go!"

You stay in the mountains for a while longer, but you return to flat ground once you spot assembled Gallian troops. They've been able to distance themselves from the Imperials. You call out to a nearby soldier.

"What's the state of things?"

"The Imperials have pulled back," the soldier says. "However, they haven't gone far. We think the plan was a success and that they're waiting for reinforcements."

"So the fighting's almost over?"

"Not even close." The soldier laughs. "We're guessing that the Imperials are preparing for a major push to get us to back off. Once we survive that, then the fighting will be mostly over for us. We'll be pulled back in case the main force needs its own reinforcements, but the bulk of the work will be over by then."

"So we just need to take this last attack," you mutter to yourself.

You return to your team, who, aside from Garcia, are all taking time to catch their breath. The shocktrooper is completely unphased from all the running and shooting.

"We're almost done here," you say. "Just one last little fight and the Imperials should be broken."

"What are your orders, sir?" Kreuss asks.

"We'll head for the front of the lines," you say.

"Of fucking course we are," Stroheim says. "You're just as bad as the usual boss."

"We have to earn our pay somehow, Stroheim," you say.

"Poverty is looking great right now." Still, she prepares her equipment and gets up. "Let's get to it then."

You move through the assembled Gallian soldiers and get closer to the expected point of attack. Most of the troops are heavier infantry, so Kreuss is the only one who sticks out. Still, it's useful to have a pair of eyes.

You wait for the Imperials to come. It doesn't take you very long.

There's a line of Imperial troops heading your way, mostly tanks and shocktroopers. Their pace is relatively slow, but the weapon fire they're putting out is anything but. There's one tank in particular that seems to be heading straight towards you, along with a small number of soldiers.

Tanks are probably the reason why the boss brought mortars along and there's no point in being stingy now that the battle is almost over.

"Mortars!" You yell. "Get that tank!"

You and Leifstel set your shields down to protect the team from the Imperials' bullets. You hear quite a few ping off, but even more hit the ground around you without damaging anything.

"Mortar ready!"

The shell flies over the battlefield at its maximum range and strikes true. The mortar's explosion is followed by a secondary explosion from the tank itself. The remaining soldiers run towards you in order to avoid the blast.

Now that they're closer, you can clearly see you're dealing with two fencers and two engineers. The engineers are most likely there to perform maintenance on the tank, but their grenades are still a threat.

Fighting is breaking out all around you. Most of it is still at gun range, but a few fencing duels are getting started. It's about time for you to join the action.

"Stroheim, use a grenade on them when they get closer," you say.

"Yes, sir." Stroheim moves directly behind your shield so she can better spot the incoming soldiers and takes out a grenade.

Fortunately, the fencers and engineers are both advancing in a group, so Stroheim will be able to catch them all in the blast if she's careful. The engineers take pot shots at you, but they don't accomplish much aside from keeping Stroheim behind cover.

Stroheim peers through the small crack in your shield and, when the soldiers get close enough, she lobs her grenade over.

It explodes upon landing, killing the two engineers. The two fencers slow down and their armour is covered in scorch marks, but they're not out of the fight yet.

Your sword arm itches, but this isn't the time to be fancy about things. You need to finish off those soldiers now.

"Gun them down!"

A hail of gunfire from Garcia shatters one of the fencers' shield and riddles his body with bullets. He stumbles a bit and falls face-first on the ground.

The second fencer takes a few light wounds from Kreuss, but that slows him down long enough for Stroheim to take out her own rifle and open fire. Weakened as he is, the fencer can't handle Stroheim's bullets. He dies a few feet ahead of his comrade.

The battle goes on, but it's clear that Gallia is on the winning side. You hold your position in case you need to reinforce nearby allies or intercept new Imperial troops, but in the end, you don't need to move. The Imperial lines collapse and the troops retreat in a disorganized mob.
