> Previously, on Mage: the Awakening Quest!

After waking up and realizing Elizabeth had left, you chased after her (with some help from the Good Samaritan Mage) to an old house north of the city. Upon meeting her inside, you find that she risked crossing the Abyss a second time and succeeded, gaining access to a new level of magical power. In the process she let go of the fear that gripped her all her life, thanking you for inspiring her to take this risk.

Returning home, you helped Elizabeth begin working out ways to beat Tsukuyomi, and also realized that there was a possibility of Tsukuyomi being a member of the Seers of the Throne. Seeking now to generate proof of this claim, you have contracted Diana to help find a magical artifact that all Seers possess as proof of their loyalty to their masters in the Supernal Realm.

A quick workout with Jemma followed, and the rest of the day turned into a night of fun and laughs, as the days ahead look to be rough and a night of revelry was needed.

> And now, back to the action!

You awake to the sounds of a loud, annoying ring tone echoing out from your cell phone, the one you use for your magical endeavors. You briefly consider letting it go to voicemail but decide against it, as the only people who have that number are those you trust to at least not try and trace it back to where you live.

"Gnn... Hello?"

"Raguel?" It's Hally, one of the Thyrsus Mages you helped save just before Christmas of last year.

"Speaking." You slowly sit up in bed, a tired and nude Elizabeth shifting in her sleep, rolling away from you and pulling the sheets closer to her.

"Are you busy? I kind of need help with something and thought you could help me out."

You groan a bit and head into the other room so as to not wake Elizabeth up. "What is it? I'll hear what you need help with but no promises."

"Well, there's this one particularly annoying spirit that Yang and I have been trying to subdue for the past few months, ever since you rescued us from the Acamoth. It's a rather annoying little bugger that we can't seem to keep locked down no matter what we do or use."

"I've yet to see why you need me, you guys are just as skilled as I am at handling spirits, and if you two are having issues I doubt me being there will help."

"Well, I think that this spirit is... Uniquely suited for your particular brand of spirit magic."

The only thing that's been revealed so far is that he went in for a simple medical procedure 10 days ago, had a severe allergic reaction and fell into a coma. Rooster Teeth (his employer) had a fundraiser going to help pay for his medical bills (along with their own health insurance) but he passed away yesterday afternoon.

Their own site's being bombarded with people trying to confirm it for themselves, but I saw the main post so it's legit.

He hit worldwide trending on Twitter (and might still be) and Kotaku just put out something (not reading it, as I've been struggling to keep the tears from flowing).

"So what you're saying is you want me to blast it, is that it?" You've tried teaching them about your Spirit Blast spell, but none of the others seem to be able to grasp the concept of it, even if they can logically understand what you do with it.

"If you can't reason with it, yes. Listen, it doesn't have to be right now, but you know how spirits can be, fickle and flightly. This particular one is especially elusive and I don't know how long it'll be before it moves on to pester someone else."

You bounce the idea around for a bit, glancing over at the clock in your office. 'Fuck, it's not even 5am yet...' "You have pretty terrible timing on your calls, Hally."

"Huh?" There's a brief pause before she speaks again. "Shit man, I'm sorry. I'm on the other side right now, you know how time doesn't really affect things here."

"It's fine, just... Give me a few minutes to get ready, and I'll meet you on the Fallen World side, I just need an address."

"Great! Thank you!" There's a slight crackling noise on her end before she speaks up, giving you the address she's at. You don't even have to scribble it down, knowing right away where she's located, and almost immediately don't want to follow through on your promise to help.

"It'll take me about a half hour to get there, just chill at Harold's Diner around the corner."

"Huh?" There's silence on the phone for about 10 seconds before she speaks again. "Wow, how'd you know about the diner there!?"

"Long story. See you soon." At that, you hang up. You glance back into the bedroom, Liz still sleeping soundly in the bed, under the warm, soft, comfortable covers.

You begin changing into some simple clothes, stuff that's comfortable yet warm. As you slip on your shoes you gently shake Elizabeth, who slowly stirs awake.

"Liz, Liz..."

Slowly her eyes flutter open, looking up at you. "Gnn... What is it..."

"Hey, Hally called a few minutes ago, she and Yang need help with some annoying spirit and they want me to help catch it or blast it to bits."

She slowly sits up in bed, clutching the sheets to her chest, mouth yawning to try and either stay awake or go back to sleep. "You think it's legit?"

"I see no reason not to trust them. I'll be careful though." You give her a quick peck on the cheek, her lips barely moving to return the kiss. "Oh, and before I forget... It's in my old stomping grounds."

Her eyes blink open a bit wider at that. "You gonna be ok?"

"Yeah." At least, you hope it will be.

----------------------

You park the car outside the diner, leaving the engine running as you see Hally and Yang inside, both nursing a cup of coffee. The two see you climb out of the car as you wait for them, and they quickly pay for their cups. You look around, seeing the boarded up buildings and potmarked roads, Harold's Diner a rather old, metal building put in back when people were worried about the USSR blowing up the States. The neighborhood as a whole has seen better days, and your time away has only cemented that belief of you getting out of here just in time.

> [1/2]
>>
> [2/2]

"Hey Raguel," Yang says, whistling a bit. "Nice wheels."

"Yeah, can we make this quick? I'm tired and the last thing I want is to have someone try and rob me while I'm here." You let Hally get in the back seat while Yang rides shotgun, and the two direct you down the block and around the corner.

"There," she says, finger pointing at a three story brick-and-mortar building, paint-chipped metal doors and rusted iron crossbars covering the windows. You internally groan, recognizing the place immediately, as old memories and emotions begin to bubble up from the past. "The spirit's in there, on the Other Side."

"So what kind of spirit is it?"

"Well... Near as we can tell, it's a humanoid spirit of some kind, one that is a very aggressive and powerful." Hally forms a portal to the Shadow World, and you three cross over with very little difficulty. On this side the building is not there, instead what you can only describe as a sumo wrestling circle is chiseled out of the swampy landscape. In the center of the circle is a swirl of violet and red, taking the shape of a human. But it isn't pacing about or throwing a tantrum. Instead, it looks like it's meditating.

"And you two couldn't catch this spirit," you thumb to it.

"Well, it's not that we can't catch it... It's been here for the past few months, challenging any and every spirit and Thyrsus Mage that confront it. And to be quite frank, it's pretty strong." Yang walks up to the circle, and the spirit doesn't move an inch.

"What he means is, the spirit kicks our asses," Hally closes the portal behind her, so as to stop anyone else from crossing over or a Sleeper to see it.

"So, what do you want me to do?"

"Fight it."

"... You called me out of bed to fight a spirit?" You shake your head in disgust, trying hard to not yell at the two.

"Listen, you're the only Spirit Mage it hasn't fought, and our thinking is that once you fight it it'll either be banished, killed, or leave to go back to Lord knows where it came from." Hally points to the surrounding area, as it doesn't even look like a swampy, forested area, but instead some country side with... You think it's rice fields, but can't be sure. "And wherever it came from, it's infecting the landscape here. It's our job to protect the natural balance of this side, as things here can screw over the Material World."

You can't really argue with that point, as changes to the Shadow World can influence the 'air' and emotion of a place, which affects Sleeper moods and invites people to investigate the area, which disturbs the barrier between the Worlds, and by proxy irritates the spirits on this side.

"So how's it kicking your asses? An elemental attack, some sort of mental or psychic barrage?"

"No. It only responds when a person enters the ring, and any attempt to remove the Zone it is in is just repulsed back at us. It's similar to a Spirit Court, and it will only change rulers if someone defeats it in combat. And it just assaults us with punches and kicks."

This is starting to sound more and more like one of those old martial arts masters, who challenge all would-be suitors to a duel, and if deemed worthy they will teach the person all their secrets. But that's just old Hollywood movie stories, that's not a real thing...

... At least, you don't think it is.

You sigh, stretching your hands, legs, arms and shoulders, working all the kinks out of your muscles. "Ok... Time to see what this spirit is capable of." You cross the threshold of the ring, and instantly the spirit's eyes flash open, white lights staring at you.

"<Are you ready for battle,>" it asks you, standing up and entering a fighting position.

"Sure, let's rumble." You brush some dirt off your nose and enter a boxing pose, arms raised to your chest, fists clenched, legs slightly bent and ready for any attack you are about to deliver or receive.

Wait, on second thought, let's let him come to us. We don't know his fighting style and if it's counter based he'll want us to go first, whereas if he's a striker he'll still try to make the first move.

Almost forgot this is basically going in blind to an MMA match. They have that bit of info, we don't. Gotta deduce it to devise the best counter strategy.

That pose, the general height and build of the person... You honestly didn't think such a thing was possible, but it certainly seems to be them... And if it is true, you're about to get your ass kicked and can certainly see why everyone else has lost to this spirit.

"Guys, is it possible for a particularly strong-willed individual to survive in the Shadow World, even if their physical body dies?" You keep your eyes focused on the foe before you, trying to absorb in every inch of movement they make, waiting for them to make the first move.

"In theory, yes..." Yang contemplates the notion.

"But that's difficult for even a Mage to do... You'd basically need to be an Archmaster to succeed in that goal. For a Sleeper I think it'd be all but impossible," Hally says. "Why?"

"Because I'm pretty sure this spirit is Bruce Lee," you murmur to yourself, just as the spirit makes the first move: a lightning quick punch. You barely side-step the swing as his arm snaps back, his left leg swinging up to kick the side of your torso. You lower your elbow and block the kick, arm stinging in pain. You throw a punch out, only for the fist to be easily deflected away, and the two of you step back, a smirk crossing the spirit's face.

"Sorry, I don't have any fancy moves like you do," you say to the spirit, who gives you a questioning look. "All I know how to do is punch really hard." You move in quickly, arms clenched in tight, fists raised to protect your face. The spirit begins to retreat from your advance but your longer legs get you in before he can gain any distance and you throw a quick jab with your left fist. He quickly blocks it with his left hand, but you unlock your fist and wrap your figners around his fist. His eyes open in shock as you pull back on the fist, his backward momentum disrupted. You wind back and throw a heavy right fist, which connects in his side, just above his kidneys.

A knee comes up, hitting you in the chest, and you release in pain, backing off. A yell of rage escapes from his mouth as the knee snaps outward, his foot connecting with your face just before you escape his reach. Your head rattles around for half a second as you bring your arms back up in a defensive stance, trying to shake the blow off, as you feel a trickle of blood go down your nose.

"Go Raguel, knock its block off!" Hally cheers from the side, as Yang watches in silence.

You begin circling around Lee, trying to stay near the center of the ring. You'd rather not use magic to fight Lee, but it might be worth trying to come up with something on the fly to see if you can get some sort of edge in this fight. Then again, near as you can tell he's not using anything to amplify his skills or power.

You click on your Spirit Sight, mainly just to try and figure out what the hell is going on. Like is this just some spirit pretending to be Lee, or is it the genuine article, or somebody else trying to emulate him. And near as you can tell with the Sight, it looks like the genuine article; the purple and red swirls and pattern fade away, revealing the man you watched as a kid wreck people in his movies with flying kicks and karate chops and a bunch of 'hiyaas' and 'wataaa!'

"<Is that all you got,>" he asks, not revealing if the blow to his side is hurting or not.

"I'm just getting started," you say back, that long-lost desire to fight starting to burn inside you. You hadn't been in a brawl since the Acamoth, and not an actual ring for combat in almost 10 years, after your last bout's ending. You've always wanted to learn martial arts, but all your parents could swing was some boxing lessions, and while you were grateful for those, it just wasn't enough, and you almost fell down a path that almost no one can return from.

You shake your head, not letting your mind wander down memory lane, and return back to the matter at hand. You step in again, and Lee retreats slightly. You both begin to dance and play footsie games, each trying to get in close, throwing out various jabs and swift kicks. Finally you see an opening, and after he throws a leg out you grab onto it and throw him to the ground, immediately getting on top of him and start to pummel him in the face and chest with your clenched fists.

His legs wrap around your shoulders to stop you from getting a full rotation in, severely weakening your punches, but several do connect through his raised fists and arms. You go to free a shoulder from his leg and the next thing you know you're on the ground looking up, as Lee kicks himself up off the ground, the side of your head ringing after his clenched fist hit.

You quickly get up off the ground, just in time to avoid a stomp of Lee's foot on your chest. You bring your right fist upward, leaping up with a strong uppercut aimed at his jaw. At the last moment he leans back, your fist grazing his nose. He whips around and delivers a strong kick to your sternum, which knocks the air out of you. Recoiling back you barely have a chance to react before he delivers a pair of swift kicks to your head, the force of the blow knocking you out of the ring as you struggle to remain conscious.

"Ooh, so close," Hally says, hurrying over to try and heal you. You wave her off even as your eyes start to blacken on the edges, and you struggle to keep awake. You slowly stand up and wait on the edge of the ring, as Lee eyes you.

"Thank you for the duel, it was very informative," you say to him, arms pressed to your side as you bow deeply to the master even as you feel a bit of blood begin to build up in your mouth, as you press a tongue against a cut on your inner cheek.

"<You are welcome,>" he says, as the swirling facade disappears from him. Yang looks on in shock as Bruce Lee walks over, placing his hand on your shoulder. "<You fight well, holy warrior. May you continue to use your strength for good.>"

Might as well get at the why, possible plot hook.
>>
>>37807769
You dealt 2 damage to Lee. No one else was even able to hit him.
>>
>>37807850
he has to respect that.

Writing.

Hey, to deal any damage at all to Bruce Lee is a monumental achievement in itself. Dude was practically made of reinforced bricks. You'd punch him in the abs and break your knuckles for the effort!

Supernaturals are damn lucky he never became a hunter, he would have cleared em' out.
>>
"Why are you here," you ask him, even as you struggle to stay conscious.

"<After I passed in the real world, I awoke here, and have been wandering the lands, finding any who are willing to spar with me. With no desire for food, drink, or sleep, I have done little more than duel opponents and meditate upon my situation as I wander this mysterious land.>"

"Wha... But... You're..." Yang looks about ready to faint from breathing too fast as he struggles to not fanboy all over Lee. Hally for her part still looks clueless as to who this is.

"If it isn't too forward... Any pointers?"

He nods, and guides your body into a standing form, left arm and fist stretched out at an unseen foe, right arm bent back, hand loose. "<Use the left as a decoy, as your power comes from the strong right. Strike forward with the left, and the moment your foe blocks,>" he gently pulls on your right hand, bringing your open palm strike forward. "<Hit with the palm strike. At worst it'll knock the breath out of them. At best, it'll break their ribs. Now, try and replicate the move.>"

You step away from the others, making sure to not try and hit any of them. You try to put the motion into practice, and while you feel weird attacking with an open palm, you certainly feel the power in the strike, and are able to replicate the strike within several attempts. "Thank you, for everything." You turn and bow deeply to him again, and he returns it.

"<If you wish to learn more, I will teach you. But for now, I must continue my travels.>" He truns to his dueling ring and clasps his hands together. In moments it fades away, the rice fields around you also turning back to the swamp feel and grassy plains of before. "<Take care.>" He begins walking, and slowly fades into the mists.

> Quest End

2 exp.

1 point in Brawl earned.

Special Move learned: Dragon Palm Strike: (Strength + Brawl + 1 die).

I will update the resource sheet for next quest. Here-on out is meta.

This was a pretty cool session. Thanks for running.
>>
Sorry for the shorter quest, I spent most of the day digging out of my house and after hearing about Monty Oum I was just drained physically and emotionally. But I didn't want to flake out and I know some people have been wanting to do side quests, so I figured this was an opportunity to show how I run a side quest.

Also, this was basically the most you could have earned in terms of exp. and other bonuses. You fought Lee head on, only using magic to confirm it was actually him, got in a couple hits and showed respect to the man.

Any training from here-on out with Lee is optional, but you will have to pay a hefty Mana price for it, and it won't be such a big powerup like this initial showing.

are you telling me in our down time we an take fighting lessons from Bruce lee

I think i love you.
>>
>>37808304
Ya i feel you on that but thanks for running.
>>
>>37808304

It was a good one dude, thanks for running.
>>
>>37808304
So we're sitting on, what, 9 xp now? How much does our next point in Forces cost again? I think that should be our next buy, especially since we just upped our brawl at no xp cost.
>>
>>37808304
how did Liz react to us coming back looking like a punching bag and finding out it was bruce lee that did it.
>>
You're welcome. Not sure when I'll run next, maybe Wednesday or Thursday.

Also feel free to ask anything, as I'll be on the PC for a bit while longer, just not gonna have any dedicated time to write.

Oh, one other thing. I know I said I probably wouldn't write any more smut, but what are your opinions of me drawing smut (as I have more confidence in my drawing than writing.)
>>
>>37808492
We should be at 9 exp., and its 15 exp. for a dot in Forces.
>>
>>37808682
hey go for it.
>>
>>37808682
Sure, why not? I kinda want to see what Liz looks like with her new hair color anyway.
>>
>>37808617
Hally will heal you up mostly, any marks left over will just be bruised skin that didn't get healed.

And she will be interested, mainly because as far as you can tell Lee was a Sleeper and he somehow ended up in the Shadow World.
>>
>>37808770
good to know.
>>
>>37808304
Hey for training with the man who pretty much made Mixed Martial Arts a thing it's fucking worth every mana point spent.

Does Dragon Palm Strike have any additional costs and what effect does it have when it connects if any?
