You make a quick stop at the Pokemon center, get Devon and Destiny healed up, then it’s off to the ice-skating rink with Robin, Vance, Jeanine and Clair.

The signs all say that Pokemon get in free as long as they’re accompanied by an owner, and no battling takes place.

“We want people to be able to relax,” the man at the counter explains.

You could take out your Pokemon, but some of them might not be suited to this, or might take all your attention to keep out of trouble

You quickly learn that it’s harder than it looks. Your rental skates feel uncomfortable and you have a hard time balancing on the ice.

“Never skate before?” Jeanine asks, knowing the answer. “Come on,” she grabs you and Robin and starts leading you around while you try to get the hang of it. Soon you’re both at least getting to the point where your feet are on the ice more often than your butt.

"There! Vance and I will be over there," she points to the other side of the rink where faster skaters are. "Clair is around somewhere." She skates off with impressive grace.

You start letting Pokemon out one at a time. First Devon. He skitters on the ice in confusion. His paws scramble wildly. He growls at the ice and you see fire gathering around his mouth. He’s going to melt it!

“Devon! No!”

He looks up at you sheepishly, and then puts his attention to keeping his balance. He keeps going way too fast and barreling passed you and Robin, crashing into a wall. You and Robin can’t help but giggle.

“You’ll get the hang of it. Keep it up!”

You toss out Nibbles, who has an even harder time of it. His legs pump furiously as he tries to keep balance and get traction.

Devon get’s his balance just in time to have his legs taken out from under him by a sliding Nibbles.

You and Robin manage slow and steady.

You ask about the upcoming town’s and gyms as you toss out Trunks.

Robin puts a finger on her mouth. It’s her usual gesture when lost in thought. “Alloycaster is on the coast to the East. It’s a town known for it’s rock quarries and unique coastal formations. The gym leader uses Steel types.”

Steel huh? You haven’t fought a lot of those yet.

“But we could always just head straight south and take a boat or Pokemon across the lake and end up close to Ampberg, where the Electric gym leader is. It’s a bit off the path though. We could also cross the lake to Faeden, but then we’d probably have to double back at some point. Faeden’s gym leader uses Fairy types.”

You’ll have to decide later. You change the subject. “What do you think about Team Imperium and the Elite Four?”

She thinks again. “I don’t know. I think Geno and Emma have their hearts in the right place, and it sounds like Cliff is against it but not able or willing to make a stand. I’m glad Emma and Geno are going to shut that down though. Hornbeam scares me. He doesn’t seem right.” She doesn’t mention her dad.

You can agree to that. You hope Emma and Geno don’t run into any major trouble. Then again, they’re two of Elite Four! Speaking of. “Any tips for fighting Emma?”

She thinks again. “She likes to fight defensively. You’ll either need to outlast her, or find a weakness. Don’t let her set up all her defences.”

That’s surprisingly good advice. You’ll keep that in mind. You toss out Destiny. She spins and slides with absolute grace, until her new pointy bits touch the ice and she skids out of control. You hope she adjusts to her body.

Robin trips on her skates. Almost simultaneously, you can Clair tripping on hers from across the rink. She was eavesdropping!

You help Robin up with Dan’s help. She looks extremely flustered. She tries to say words but they come out jumbled.

Clair knows she's been made. You see the uncharacteristic panic on her face as she does a terrible job acting casual. She tries to chat up some guy next to her.

You skate over in time to hear the guy's reaction. "Are you sure? You don't look familiar."

"Totally! Yup! We used to hang out all the time, you and I. Clair and...you! Buddy! Inseparable. Oh Hey Robin, meet my old pal! This guy here. We were just talking about the good old days, right? Ha ha!" She punches him in the arm. The guy rolls his eyes and skates off.

You and Robin exchange a look. Teenage girls already have a unique ability to ask and answer questions with a glance that makes being psychic a redundancy sometimes.

"It's fine this time, but don't do it again."

Clair slumps her shoulders in relief. "Thanks, and sorry. Not using my powers is hard. Sometimes I do it without realizing."

"I guess that makes sense," Robin says. "It must be like asking someone not to hear or see."

You and Clair cringe at Robin talking about vision. There's a quick awkward pause.

"Well, tell you what Clair. You can observe up close. Come on!" You grab her and Robin by the hands and skate. You're pretty terrible, but they're worse.

Clair's shyness is replaced by a typical smarmy grin. "You're not going to get all lewd again are you? There are people here."

You laugh as Robin blushes. "No, not that. Ask anything you want."

Clair asks you and Robin about your relationship. A lot of it is typical stuff. Things she always knows, but wants you to explain your own way instead of just viewing memories.

You let out Levi. She sees all the people and Pokemon and refrains from roaring. It looks like she's feeling a bit more reserved after getting in trouble for fighting Robin's Gyarados. She stays on her best behavior, which is commendable considering how many small Pokemon slide into her.

You, Robin, and Clair enjoy a nice time on the ice with your Pokemon. It's odd how well Robin and Clair can get along. Or maybe it's not. Robin might be shy, but she's still often very direct if you look past her stuttering. You're the one that snakes and dances through a conversation. It's nice to see everyone laugh.

A figure skates in front of you. "Having a good time? I hope you're ready for a battle!"

It's Emma! That's right, she owns these rinks. She probably just arrived

“Professor Hornbeam, the guy you and Geno were going to stop?”

She looks like she’s really concentrating. “Oh, right. Sorry. I had a weird brainfart there or something.” You’re a little surprised that Elite Four member, a doctor, and pilot, has ‘brainfarts’, but everyone’s human. “I was hoping we could talk about that after. I didn’t want you to be distracted. He got away. We thought we were going to get the drop on him, but somehow he must have known we were coming. He stole a bunch of equipment and he and a disturbing about of Team Imperium people have vanished. A lot of money was siphoned out of Prosapia as well. Geno is following the trail, but I don’t know where it will lead.” She looks you in the eyes. “Kat, you and your friends need to be careful. What little we found is… disturbing. I don’t think he’s right in the head. We think he might go after people he believes have wronged him.” She looks around. “We should talk somewhere else.”

You nod and follow after waving over Vance and Jeanine. You and your friends come to an empty rink. “We rarely have enough people to use this one, but it’s here just in case.”

“It makes for a good arena,” you say. “I’m ready to fight.”

She smiles. “Good. A trainer should always be ready.”

You take a deep breath. You need to win this fight for Robin. You still feel it’s a bit twisted, betting something like her expertise to help someone you love, but you’ll play this game if it means a chance to help her.

It’s a simple one on one. Emma looks fairly relaxed. She’s not worried at all. Why should she be? You take another breath to calm your nerves. She’s just another trainer. She can make mistakes.

If she's really good enough to be an Elite Four member, you can't afford a single mistake. You'll need every trick you know and a few miracles. You watch and wait for her to choose a Pokemon.

"I can help," you hear a voice in your head. It's Clair. "Under normal circumstances I'd never do something like this, but I know how much you want to win. This match isn't anywhere close to fair."

She's right. It's not snowing, but it's cold. It's in a place Emma knows well, and you're just a regular trainer against one of the best battlers in the region. Nothing about this is close to fair.

But can you cheat like that?

Emma casually reaches for a Pokeball and throws out an Abomasnow.

"It's your choice, Kat," Clair says inside your head. "Nobody has to know."

Your heart pounds. The whole reason you took this up was for Robin's eye. Isn't it wrong to let your pride get ahead of that? Or is it wrong to cheat in a match, even if it's unfairly stacked against you.

Abomasnow is a heavy hitter and it's bound to be far more powerful than our pokemon, and Devon isn't the type to get pounded on. Brick break is super effective against him too, and with Dan we can avoid the possible earthquake with magnet rise.

"Flamethrower! Hit her hard!" Devon digs in his heels and throws a powerful stream of fire at his opponent.

"Solarbeam!" Emma counters.

The beams collide, creating an explosion in the middle. Devon pours an intense amount of effort into it while Abomasnow only gives it a little push. Devon manages to push it hard and his Flamethrower nearly pushes Solarbeam all the way back, but they both start to run out of power out before it touches. At least Abomasnow had to struggle towards the end. You feel Devon's fighting presence. Come on! Mega-evolve!

"He's pretty strong," Emma compliments as she checks her nails. She's toying with you!

You can feel your Houndoom's intense presence. You guess he wasn't quite ready. You're sure you can push him all the way to mega-evolve now.

The Solarbeam and Flamethrower evaporate.

You're not sure if you're blown away by how powerful it has to be to negate a Fire move with a Grass type move in this heat, or if you're happy you know you can make it struggle.

"Devon! Again! This time go all out." You know he knows what you mean. You don't want to announce. You need this to be a surprise.

Devon digs in hard and fires away. Her Abomasnow let's another Solarbeam loose to stop it.

"I'm disappointed. Trying the same thing won't give a different result. My Pokemon can last all day and you'll get-"

She stops as Devon glows with power. Your head goes light as he explodes into a Mega Houndoom!

"What?"

The flames rip through the Solarbeam like it's fuel and strikes Abomasnow head on! It goes flying back as Devon slowly walks forward, pressing the attack.

"Protect! Quickly!"

Emma's Pokemon summons an unbreakable shield that keeps the flames from touching her. It looks severely hurt though.

"Simply amazing," Emma says as she looks on. "But I wonder how long you can last?"

You're sweating bullets and your head spins. Without a bridge of some sort, this is even harder than before. You don't know how long you can stay on your feet. You see Devon take a small amount of fatigue too. His ability must be Solar Power now. His special attack is increased under the sun, but at the cost of some of his health over time.

Emma smirks. "I have you now!" She whistles. You see her Abomasnow purse it's lips as the Protect begins to fade. It must be doing a sound based move!
