Continuing off from here after my internet problems last night: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/37752291/#p37756667

You are Vor'zal, priest of Tak'zaya Ska, now an orc of the Stonetusk Clan apparently. You are on the hunt, though sadly today's prey smells like it would not make for a good meal.

Even if it is close by, you see no reason to change your tactics, staying at the front of the group, following its acrid stench into the mountains.

The lieutenant's warg gives a low growl, ears pinned back. You can understand its feelings, this thing knows where you are now. You think the group has been quiet, and you did not spot it watching you, so it most likely has some supernatural sense for your presence. While you are hunting it, it no doubt believes it is hunting you.

You glance at the stragglers at the back of the group, if it was going to strike, it would hit them first. If it does, you will be ready for it.

The rocky ground of the wastes becomes even more uneven as you move into the mountains themselves. There are plenty of places the creature could hide here. The scent trail weaves off the wider path you are following down into a narrow crevasse, it would be uncomfortably tight and hard to manoeuvre quickly down there, but you could follow it easily enough.

>Go down alone
>Go down with the whole pack
>Stay out of the crevasse, try to follow the trail as closely as possible from the easier path

Looks like you're staying out of the crevasse then.

It's almost like you don't want to get trapped in a confined area with a mysterious supernatural creature.

Writing.
>>
You do not know what this creature is capable of, and the crevasse leaves you few options if the hunt turns against you. You sniff the air, the smell is stronger here, but it is all around you, harder to pinpoint without being able to follow it directly.

You pick your way over the uneven ground to the side of the crevasse, the sun blocked by the looming peaks. Your ears twitch, but all you hear is the clatter of scree on the mountainside. While the Howling Mountains are far from the most populous of locations, you would have expected to have heard some animals around, but the pass is devoid of life. Whatever this thing is, nothing else in these mountains is foolish enough to stray too close.

You stalk along the side of edge of the crevasse, the thing definitely came through here, the stink is getting more and more potent with every step.

“Urgh, what is that,” the lieutenant growls. You suppose it has gotten foul enough now that even regular orcs can smell it.

You pause at the edge of the crevasse, it hits a dead end, the creature would have to come back up here, but the trail doesn't. It just stops dead. The end of the crevasse was a trap, to trap your warriors in a confined space with no way out. Which means the creature is here, somewhere.

A thin wisp of fog drifts past your feet, making you frown. A fog bank, rolling in fast. That is not natural, you are still too low in the mountains for clouds, and it seems strangely purposeful, sweeping over your pack, growing higher with every moment.

“Shit, stay close, no-one get separated,” the lieutenant snaps, as the pack draw their weapons, pressing into a defensive formation.

No stragglers to pick off now, but you need to decide what to do fast, soon the fog will swallow you up completely, then you will barely be able to see a few feet on front of your face. Something tells you your quarry will not be similarly inconvenienced.

>Get to higher ground.

The creature will definitely attack the pack, so plan an ambush on it when it does, keep a close eye, nose, and ear on the orcs for someone struggling/disappearing.
Maybe getting to higher ground to survey them could work, and if we spot the creature itself and an opportunity presents itself, then just do it ourselves.

The fog builds inevitably higher until it swallows up your pack entirely, circled close, weapons drawn, squinting into the thick haze. You can barely make them out it's so heavy, just vague orcish shapes.

A chill settles over the still mountainside, making your skin prickle. All you hear is the sound of the pack's breathing and the low growl of the warg. Your ears twitch, you ignore the stink and the way the fog stings at the inside of your nostrils, you can taste the acrid smell in the air, but you still see no sign of the creature.

Then you hear the silence broken by a pained gurgle, cut off in a split second as one of the pack is grabbed by something out of the mist, dragged out of the circle and gone before you can react. You don't think any of the rest of them even heard it.

You know where it is now, for the moment, but going after it would mean leaving the pack. It seems content to pick you off piece by piece.

You crouch down low, creeping towards the orc cautiously. This thing can see you perfectly, you know that, it could see you before the fog, and now you are even more at a disadvantage. Rather than aimlessly running around trying to find it, you will make it come to you, and then you will strike.

The orc's death rattle is growing more and more faint with every passing moment, there is no point in rushing, you can't heal him. You draw closer, close enough to see him. Half his face is gone, just missing, exposing the ruined mess within, it's a wonder he has held on this long, the skin bubbling and crackling round the edge of the wound.

Every muscle in your body tenses as you lean down closer, ready for the attack, and the creature does not disappoint.

A long tendril lashes out of the mist, spearing the ground where you stood just moments before as you twist your body, wrapping a clawed hand around the writhing appendage, pulling hard, claws tearing at the fleshy tendril. A surprised braying sound echoes through the foggy mountainside as the creature sprawls to the ground in front of you. You still can't see it well, but you can see it well enough to know what it is. A Goat of Mhoiru, a divine servant of the hungry, twisted mountain god Mhoiru. You did not think that god had any worshippers in this land.

“Mhoiru's brood not welcome here...,” you snarl, releasing the tongue as the acidic fluids start to boil away the skin of your hand.

The creature's tongue snaps back into its snouted mouth quickly, rising to its hind legs, lanky and sinuous.

“Pacts have been made, sacred flesh has been devoured in Mhoiru's name, we will bring orc meat to our master's table,” the creature whispers, its voice hollow, echoing.

You have injured its tongue, which is good, but divine servants are full of nasty surprises, you doubt you have seen all that this thing can do yet.

You mutter a prayer to Tak'zaya Ska for strength, for sharp claws and fangs to tear through the beast's enchanted hide. You feel your muscles tense, straining with newfound strength, your tusks curling, teeth narrowing to sharp points, thick hair sprouting across your forearms as both hands grew heavy and taloned.

You hunch down, you and the beast circling each other, both looking for a moment of weakness to exploit.

On one side is the crevasse, on the other is the loose, rocky scree of the mountainside. You can see neither through the thick fog, but you remember the layout well enough that you can guess accurately enough where everything is.

So how do you attack?

You keep your distance, waiting for the right moment. The creature's hoofed feet make no sound as it picks over the rocky terrain, claws twitching, leaving a trail of acrid saliva and blood behind it as its ruined tongue drools uselessly in its snouted mouth.

“Vor'zal?”

The lieutenant is calling for you, and that proves to be just the distraction you were waiting for, the creature's eyes flick momentarily towards the pack, and you lunge forward, lowering to all fours as you lash out at the goat, claws tearing into its leathery skin, teeth and tusks tearing into the flesh. It tastes foul, but you endure, dragging the surprised creature to the ground as you worry at its leg, teeth scraping bone.

It kicks at you with its free leg, the hoof slamming into your shoulder hard, but you just wrench harder in turn, dragging it across the ground, tearing up more of the flesh. Its leg is completely torn open, spattering the rocky ground with thick, dark blood.

With a sound halfway between a bray and a roar, there is a flash of light, and you find your jaws clamping over thin air.

You blink away the spots in your eyes, looking around. The fog draws back, swirling around a massive figure towering over you, drawing into its leathery hide. The divine servant is big as a giant now, towering over you where you stand, barely above its knee. Its smaller form was more humanoid, like some strange mix of goat and man, this one is more bestial. It stands on all fours, skin hairless and maggot-pale, leathery and stretched tight over bone. You can make out all the ribs of its emaciated chest, above you where you stand, barely above its knee.

It looks down at you with a goatlike face, the mouth puckered and shrivelled, its twitching, wounded tongue drooling, yellow bulging eyes fixed on you. A pair of great curling horns sprout from the back of its skull, hanging with tattered ropes and bound corpses like some twisted mockery of religious talismans on some holy tree.

You do note with some satisfaction that the hind leg you were tearing at before still looks badly injured, you doubt the beast can move fast in its present state.

“What the fuck is that,” you hear the lieutenant ask.

You glance over, it seems that the pack has not lost its nerve, which is good. They are running towards the fight, the lieutenant and his warg at the forefront.

“More flesh for Mhoiru,” the hollow voice whispers.

“Lieutenant, spread out... wear down beast... stay out of range,” you grunt, frustrated by how hard it is to convey orders to orcs, leading a family of deathworms was so much simpler.

“Yeah, I get you,” the lieutenant shouts back, barking orders to the warriors.

The Goat of Mhoiru raises a hoof, bringing it down where you were standing, cracking the stony ground as you leap out from under it. You growl, feeling the crag lion hide slung over your back clinging to your skin, burrowing into you, fusing with you. You drop to all fours, hands and feet turning to paws, a coat of reddish brown hair spreading across your body.

The pack is staying back, pelting the creature with slingstones, javelins and arrows, but as yet they seem to be doing little more than annoying the beast as they strike against its leathery hide.

You dart round behind it, going for its injured leg again, lunging at it, but the beast lurches forward into an awkward charge, bearing down on the scattered orcs. Most dodge out of the way, hammering it with more stones and arrows as it lumbers past, but one unfortunate orc slips on the loose scree, his panicked roar cut off sharply as the beast's hoof caves in his chest.

Fortunately, that has also brought it closer to the crevasse and limited its mobility further as it turns for another charge.

What now?

Is it big enough to fall into the crevasse, or would it just get stuck?

harasse it with the warg, weave through it's legs, snipe rend bite them from two directions to confuse and anger it while bringing it closer to the crevasse

It would get stuck, the crevasse is quite narrow.
>>

big enough to break a leg if it fall I'd wager
>>
>>37772440
Try and confuse its step, hurt its leg, and maybe have the orcs charge it to get it stuck in the crevasse, after which we can whittle it down bit by bit, if it transforms then we go after it.

>>37772404
Even if it gets stuck, that's an open options to force it to become smaller or stick it full of spears

good, it's still a great advantage, especially with mauled legs.

You look to the warg, sticking close to its companion. Speaking with beasts is so much simpler, it understands your intentions quickly, breaking off from the lieutenant to join you in darting between the creature's legs.

It brays with pain as the pair of you snap at its legs, clawing at the skin and tearing into the flesh, its hooves stomp recklessly as it tries to crush you, turning in an awkward circle on its wounded hindleg.

You are impressed, it seems the lieutenant understood your intention too, perhaps that is why the warg likes him. You suppose you will have to learn his name sometime. As the hulking creature turns, the lieutenant leads his pack against it, peppering it with ranged attacks as they close the distance, hammering into its already wounded legs.

It stumbles, trying to regain its footing, a shriek escaping its puckered snout as its leg slips on the edge of the crevasse, the creature's heavy body, collapsing under it, its leg twisting at an unnatural angle as it slips halfway into the crack. Its head thrashes, horns slamming against the rock, scattering bones from the skeletal remains strung up in them, its free legs scrabble helplessly on the ground, trying to pull itself free.

For the moment at least, it is at your mercy. Tak'zaya Ska does not reward foolish mercy. The only question is whether you wish to learn anything before you end the creature.

You shift back into your orcish form, feeling the bones and muscles shift as your skin falls away, returning to being little more than a tattered hide slung across your back.

“Questions... answer, or kill you...” you growl.

The creature turns to stare at you, bulging eyes fixing you with a flat stare as it continues to try and drag itself free.

“Who summoned you?”

The creature stays silent, up until one of your pack drives a spear into its side, making it cry out.

“Joachim, priest of our lord,” it howls.

“Why... what pacts made?” you grunt, as another of the orcs drives a spear into the creature's hide, thick blood oozing from the wound.

“The dragon wished for agents to strike at your clan. Joachim offered to summon us, if the dragon offered up followers as a ritual feast. At the height of the celebration, we were called forth to find meat for our master's table,” it hisses.

“How many?”

“Three.”

The lieutenant steps forward.

“I have a question for you too. Why did you target that particular orc. He was nothing special. If you could slip into the camp, why not someone important to the clan?” the lieutenant asks.

The creature regards him silently, bulging eyes flicking from him to you and back.

“Saw too much. Saw what it should not.”

“What did it see?” he snaps, gesturing for his clanmates to drive more spears into the creature.

“I will speak no more, I have brought much meat to my master's table. My work in this realm is done,” it hisses, its flesh starting to buckle and twist, angry boils sprouting up across its hide.

This isn't a particularly high ranked divine servant, so it's highly unlikely that Mhoiru is going to be holding a personal grudge.

Minor divine servants get summoned, killed and banished back to their divine realm all the time.

You don't know what it's planning, and you don't intend to give it time to finish either.

“Kill it,” you snap, and the pack responds with impressive speed, burying spears into the beast, laying into it with axes and swords.

The Goat of Mhoiru gives an enraged shriek, a sound like a thunderclap ringing out as it collapses in on itself and vanishes in a puff of acrid smoke, banished back to its master's realm. All that is left behind to remember its passing is the skeletal remains of its victims, falling from its vanishing horns to the rocky ground, clattering down into the crevasse.

The pack seem to hold their breath, waiting for a moment as if expecting the thing to return, but you know well enough that it is long gone, and it will be many years before it is in a state to be summoned again.

“What do you think it meant by him seeing too much?” the lieutenant asked, kicking a bone fragment over the edge idly.

You don't reply, dealing with orcs all day has worn you out, you want to return to the camp and hunt that bloatfrog you smelled earlier. Politics, deceptions, dragons and divine servants, if you could live the rest of your life without having to deal with any of them, you would be a happy orc.

Still, the pack did well today. Perhaps there is hope for this Stonetusk Clan after all.

There were no remains of the creature, it vanished, as divine servants have a frustrating habit of doing when banished by the destruction of their physical form. Vor'zal can't detect its magic, but he will recognize the smell from now on.
