Had you wanted to paint the floor with his blood, this would have been the chance. However, instead of walking the brutal path, you slam your training blade into the back of his knee, sending him reeling to the ground on one knee while you back away from him. He quickly regains his balance and collects himself as he gets up on his feet again.

"You're way too fast even for me, Chief.", Joker chuckles and you can see that he's entered a more defensive stance, waiting for you to attack him and tire you out.

While Joker is deep in his defensive stance, tracking your every step and movement with his fixated gaze, your own dodges from one area of his body to the next. What you find weird is that you haven't found any opening or weaknesses in his defense. The mark of a good commando. So you do what a wild Akk dog would do; You feign an attack to provoke him. Thrusting forward with your right blade, it's easily parried by the other commando's sword and he goes in for a counter-attack, but you have two blades at hand and one of them is still in front of him. With your left blade, you beat his sword out of the way before you move in and slams the hilt of the wooden sword into Joker's face, sending him staggering backwards until you launch forward, striking at the same knee as before. You watch as he falls to the ground and you press your blade against his throat.

You can clearly see that Joker's more concerned how Yna is looking at him or judging him right now than the commando standing above him. You, however, don't look at Yna. Never break eye contact with your foe until they're either dead or concede to their defeat.

I think alot of it came from Joker showing he was a living being instead of a mook puppet. His near breakdown back on genosis woke up the players that each character has a personality, psyche, feelings and motivations that influence them. Including chief himself, we're just the warpwhispers in his ear trying to keep him alive and nudge choices that are important.

Its that stoic, odd mind of his. He's obviously intelligent, observant and a brillaint fighter but his social growth was stunted during training. He's high functioning but very awkward around others and speaking. Probably the type of guy who likes privacy and a quite room in his downtime.

He's strong though. Long as he knows we're there for him and make sure to talk with him we'll be fine handling him. Thats probably the most important part. Talking to him, dudes been through a wringer first op out and has nightmares about it.

In the middle of their conversation, you approach them with an idea that both of them find most intriguing; they should have a sparring match now. In the end, Joker loses his patience and attacks her, breaking his defensive formation. You sigh as Yna easily parries him and with a swift kick to his unstable knee, she sends him reeling to the floor in defeat. The duel is over before it scarcely has begun. Whether or not Joker held back to not wound Yna is one thing, but breaking his defensive stance and attacking her so recklessly was something even more stupid on his end. You're left wondering if he did it intentionally or not when Joker says he's needed on the bridge after a message came through his holopad that you missed the sound of. Yna is about to follow him out.
