you have allied with your enemy

heading out to seek out and remove what you assume is the greater threat

i suppose this is a valid plan

but still risky

and foolish

but perhaps the weed and vine will fall in this battle as well

"I guess we should get going while there's still daylight," I say, shrugging.

Jessica isn't going to kill herself, after all. Though it would make my life a hell of a lot easier if she did.

"It's noon," Archibald says, glaring at me. "Don't be stupid."
"Cut it out," Charlotte snaps back at him. "Cecile's right, we ought to get this done as soon as we can."
"Yeah," Irene nods. "I'll go tell the guys downstairs that we're heading out so you three get ready, okay?"
"Yeah, whatever," Archibald replies. "Backups and all that..."

With a smile on her face that's way too cheerful for someone who's actively planning to go and kill someone, Irene leaves the room and hurries out of sight.

"Cecile, are you really okay with going out and..." Charlotte drifts off.
"Yeah," I nod. "I caused this problem and I'm gonna end it."
"No, the Tree of Life is what -caused- this problem," she replies, glaring at Archibald. "So don't ever blame yourself for this, okay?"
"........."

I can't promise that.

"Let's just go," I mumble.
"Alright," Charlotte nods. "I guess we ought to meet up with that girl at the front entrance."

Taking my hand, she leads me out of the room and down the stairs. I spot Irene talking to one of those Church guys along the way, but Charlotte just ignores her and continues on towards the building's front door.

"Yes," Charlotte nods. "She's still in the sewers, cursing to herself..."
"About me?"

Charlotte's expression is all the answer I need.

"Don't worry, I won't let her do anything to you," Charlotte replies.
"Thanks..." I reply with a weak smile.

"Charlotte?"
"Hm?" Charlotte glances at me.
"How exactly to you plan on getting that girl out of the sewer?" I ask. "I mean, she's relatively safe down there and it's not like you can control water or anything..."

And as funny as the mental image of her getting washed out in a torrent of raw sewage, she'd probably just end up freezing it before that happened.

"I can't control water, no," Charlotte shakes her head. "But rats are another matter entirely."

I feel the sudden urge to throw up.

"Charlotte, you're going to-" I gasp.
"If I can manage to do so, I will," Charlotte shrugs, "but that took a lot out of me the last time I tried it so I doubt it'll work as well. I had to actively direct every rat to-"
"Please spare me the details!" I stammer.
"Er... sorry," she sighs.

Please, I don't need any more nightmares.

"Anyways," Charlotte continues, "starting a swarm is a lot easier to do than cause a sudden feeding frenzy so that's the plan," she says. "I'll have one come at her from the right direction and then..."
"But what if she just freezes all of them to death?" I ask. "And I think she has heat vision so won't she see them coming?"
"Yes, I took that into account," Charlotte replies. "That's why I have a backup swarm of bats as well as roaches and other creepycrawlies to 'gently' guide her in the direction I want her to go in..."
"...and then you force her outside and I fire my laser."
"Either that or that dorito boy skewers her outright," she replies. "But yes, that's the general idea."

"If you say so," I sigh. "I just want this to be over with so things can go back to normal."

Or as normal as I can make things, anyways.

"Wha!?"

Out of nowhere, Charlotte spind me around and hugs me from behind, resting her chin on my shoulder.

"Yes, we are," Charlotte replies in a cold voice.
"Well I think that the two of you are an adorable couple. Matching dresses and everything..."

It's almost impressive how Irene just blatantly ignores the fact that Charlotte clearly hates her. I don't know if she's doing it on purpose or if she's just too nice to notice or what.

"Quit trying to make friends with her, Irene," Archibald says, having popped up from nowhere. "She's not worth it."
"Excuse me?" Charlotte lets go of me and steps towards Archibald.

After pulling up a map on her phone, Charlotte turns around and shows it to Irene.

"This is the exit point," Charlotte says, pointing at the map. "So I'll need you and your flunky over there to wait closeby so that we can ambush her when she's out in the open."
"Alright, we can do that," Irene nods.
"Good," she sighs. "Driving her out is going to cost me some stamina so I won't be able to join in the fight right away, but I'll head to where the rest of you as soon as I can."

"Why do you need to know that, Charlotte?" Irene asks.
"Well once that Jessica woman is out in the open, I'll need him to block off the way back into the sewer with his triangles so that she can't backtrack. And for the best results, he'd need to be as far as away from the exit as possible so that we can minimize the risk of her spotting him beforehand."
"...that makes sense," Archibald mumbles. "Alright, I'll do that."

So that's everyone's roles...

"But what about me?" I ask.
"Eh?"
"Where should I be?" I point to myself. "Do you want me to stay with you, or should I go to back up Irene, or..."
"I'd say that it's up to you," Irene replies, shrugging. "Just do whatever you feel you're most comfortable with."

My problem so far is it's seems like we've chased off all the fun parts of our life.

We pissed off Mina with bad decisions
Theresa for not picking her over Charles.
I didn't even want Charles to begin with, but I got her.
So besides CC's sister and Irene, Charles and co. are the last few people who like us.

And now Charles is trying to get Irene out of our lives, too.

Either we have picked worst waifu, or Charles is doing all of this knowingly and we don't even realize it.

>>
>>37718557
I'm still hanging on, but it's getting harder to come back each week when it's "How will CC fuck up this time?" the quest.

I don't think anything we've done regarding relationships is permanent, but it's enough of a dry spell to make me not want to read for a few months until it blows over.

I'm glade Irene is the cutest block of dense in this quest, because I'm not sure I could stand her snapping at us, too.
>>
>>37718534
Cecile isn't emotionally sound enough to be making the type of battle decisions Mina wants us to be making. She ran in. She got frozen. We understandably freaked out.

Theresa wanted us to lie to our long term girlfriend who can detect lies about something just so she could have a souvenir.

There reasons are stupid, and it's just making Cecile feel like shit and make more stupid decisions.
>>
>>37718306

She really dislikes the Tree of Life in particular, and there's also a bit of jealousy because of Irene.

Charlotte's range is unlimited.

There are not.

>>37718343
>Does Charlotte feel pain if she's perceiving through other animals? What happens when the animal she's looking through dies?
She only feels their pain if she's assuming direct control over them. Should an animal that she's controlling die, it's rather traumatic.

>>37718368
>Is it possible to tell Char to lay the fuck off Irene? She's been nothing but kind to us.
You could if you wanted to.

>>37718430

Gardeners have no control over the powers they give.

You get that this is objectively wrong, right?

I'm going to go make an image of arch saying how you don't understand Theresa for future use now.
>>
>>37718659
What do you mean objectively wrong? She wanted us to lie to Charlotte about her having a book so that she could stick it in a shoebox in her closet or something.

Even if we lied to Charlotte by omission by saying Mina had the book, it's not like we were never going to see her or talk to her about the books again. It's very likely that secret would have been blown within a month anyway.
>>
>>37718610
>That last vote had 36 replies.

So you're saying people are WILLINGLY voting for shitposting?

I don't believe that. I find it far more likely that number is a coincidence and what has happened is shitposter-san just happened to samefag the proper number of posts.

I don't subscribe to using unique posters as a measure of how many posters are currently in the thread right at this moment, there's no way to gauge how many people have left since that number was taken since it never decreases.
>>
>>37718610

>>37718776
They wouldn't count at all unless they stop lurking
>>
>>37718735
Cecile isn't a robot, she probably wasn't thinking that way when she decided to tell the truth.

Even if she was, she could have also thought about it too much with the fact that Charlotte isn't a mechanical lie detector, and probably functions off of sensing heart-rate and other biological functions. If Cecile was nervous about it in a way that looked like lying, it would still ping. And Cecile would be nervous in a way that looked like lying because she knew it was lying.

And all of this is still just because Theresa wanted the stupid book just to look at it occasionally. It's not even like she didn't trust Charlotte with it.

It's dumb of her to act like we're somehow stupid for not trying to lie to our girlfriend who detects lies in a way we weren't certain of at the time. For all we knew Charlotte 'detected lies' by reading minds, and she just told us it was only detecting lies so we didn't freak out as much.

Theresa is upset because we were honest with our girlfriend about the location of a potentially ddangerous object.
>>
>>37718791

When you stop posting because of the other players doing stuff that you don't like, that only gives them more of a majority with which to do more stuff that you don't like.

We've never gotten express confirmation on how her lie detection works, I don't think. Since she has a biological focused branch though, it's probably perception based, like >>37718806 and >>37718814 were saying.

But even if it is 100% true/false statement detecting, neither Cecile nor Theresa knows how it works. Theresa could be completely wrong and lying by omission wouldn't work.

Doesn't matter. Cecile's thought process at the moment could have only been 3 things.

>Charlotte can detect lies, I should tell the truth

>Chatlotte can detect lies, which might include lies of omission, I should tell the truth

>Charlotte can detect lies, which might not count not telling the full truth, I should leave something out and technically not lie

The first two are very reasonable thought process to go through. The third one is only obvious in hindsight.

I honestly don't see why everyone gets really upset when Cecile is not making 100% perfect optimal decisions all the time. Everyone makes mistakes, but these aren't even mistakes. These are reasonable actions that aren't the best option in hindsight.

I forgive you though, you don't know what you are doing is wrong, so you cant be held responsible for your own mistakes.
>>
>>37719022
Yes, we brought it up shortly after learning she can detect lies out of a desire to be honest with our girlfriend.

This whole thing is only obvious in hindsight. Cecile didn't have any real way of knowing what she could keep a secret or not.

But no. You're right. If we played Cecile as a perfect just as planned chessmaster manipulator, we might have been able to not make these decisions. We wouldn't be playing the character anymore, but we'd be super optimal.

Do you know what would have happened if we kept lying to Charlotte about the books? All this drama with Theresa not liking us would be replaced with drama about how Cecile feels guilty for lying to her girlfriend's face and wasting her time. We'd still be having people voting to tell Charlotte about the book. It would have happened eventually. It doesn't matter.

You know how I know that I'm right? I'm actually making points, while you're just insisting that lying by omission would have worked and calling me autistic when I offer reasons why it wouldn't.

Cecile thought Charlotte could detect lies. She decided to tell the truth.

Full stop.

It doesn't matter how Charlotte's lie detection actually worked. It only matters how Cecile thought it worked at the time. At the time, she thought it worked very well, and so told the truth. It's that simple.

Theresa is mad because Cecile mentioned the second book. Cecile has no way of knowing how to keep that secret from Charlotte. This is very simple.

The problem is that outside of shit like saving their lives when the circumstances allow us to, we don't have a lot of range for what we could do for them, especially now that they avoid us.

And they'd consider us saving their lives to be due to them as past friends, and not a reason to excuse us.

We could also beg for their forgiveness and say "I'm sorry" a lot, and then the next time things go wrong we'll make another mistake, screw them over and we'll be back to square one.

The only thing she had to do, literally the ONLY thing Cecile had to do in order to keep Theresa's book a secret was to NOT MENTION IT. That is all. Nothing else.

You try to rationalize the stupid shit that we've done by saying that "cecile thought such-and-such" when the only reason that she thought so at all was because Archelon felt the need to try and work all the stupid shit that we do into being in-character.

But SUFFERING doesn't make for an interesting story at all if it means a quest that is primarily based on social interactions has the MC getting cut off from all their friends because they keep making hardly excusable decisions.

And I think that playing a quest include we as the player trying to do the best we can for the character. It's part of the game. But I suppose you can go on a sportsfield and intentionally act like a retard for le epic lulz and make your team lose if that's your idea of fun.
>>
>>37719377
I'll have you know I tried to talk them out of their idiocy and voted against it.

It is so much better when they could have had things go well, even had someone try to guide them and then they drive off the cliff, refusing to admit jumping off a cliff was a mistake.
>>
>>37719377
See I understand that line of thinking in the case of telling Charolotte about Therssa's book.

But ditching Mina was just so pants on head retarded and out of character that it hurt the story.
>>
>>37719398
Seems like you weren't convincing enough, maybe your shit arguments drove them to do the opposite.

I'm not saying we should go full edgelord, just that the optimal course of action isn't always going to make sense from a character standpoint.

So did that Chase Jessica/ Thaw Mina only have a single viable/intelligent choice?
>>
>>37719436
Too bad that isn't a valid excuse for betraying Theresa.
>>
>>37719398
You don't get to take credits for supposedly arguing for the right decision (one an anonymous message board, no less, so conveniently there's no way to know if you're telling the truth) and then rejoicing for the bad one. It just makes you look like you're pulling a slightly more sophisticated version of "I was only pretending to be retarded". It's why the Kirei posters just end up looking like edgy autists.

>>37719436
But we as the players are supposed to know the score, and even without metagaming we should strive to make the character better in spite of their shortcomings. Or else they'll never overcome these shortcomings in the first place.
>>
>>37719455
>Chase Psychopath
>Save best friend
>GO FUCKING NUTS AND HAND CONTROL OVER TO THE CLEARLY INSANE ALTERNATE PERSONALITY IN YOUR HEAD

I won't say it had a wrong choice or a good choice, but it had one really, really bad choice we decided to go with.

I say "We" but I have doubts anyone who still plays voted for it.
>>
>>37719455
Yes. Saving Mina was the only choice that made sense to me.

Well it is still a game. Most have some kind of rating for how well you're doing.

arch could give us total freeform without consequences, or Cecile could go all absurdist on Mina and Theresa and says that her choices don't matter. But would it be the quest arch and the players want to have?
>>
>>37719713
>Absurdist
I thought that was fatalism?
>>
>>37719725
Possible, I hesitated on which one to use.
>>
>>37719474
Since I didn't think Arch would include a trap choice, I assumed Mina was not in danger.
In my head it was like a comic book.
Sort of like Wolverine and Colossus chasing after an ice-based villain and Colossus was frozen in ice. He's merely slowed down for awhile.
Should have recognized we were in Darker Than Black instead.
>>
>>37719733
Fairly sure absurdism is there is no greater meaning to life. Fatalism is that everything is going to happen anyway and out decisions don't matter.
>>
>>37719752
Well Mina did get out without a scratch because her armor conveniently happens to protect her. It's the part where we weren't sure of that but still left her encased that she dislikes.

>>37719755
I stand corrected then.
>>
>>37719713
I'm not saying that choices shouldn't have consequences. I think all choices should have positives and negative consequences evenly so they can be rationally considered.

If only some choices have drawbacks then only REJOICE players and people are unaware of the purely negative choice will choose them and end up making the character appear stupid and incompetent.
>>
>>37719781
Technically REMOVE did give us a shot at stopping Jessica there and then (she could have escaped if we stayed to help Mina) so it wasn't an entirely worthless option, but then we had to fight...
>>
>>37719768
>It's the part where we weren't sure of that but still left her encased that she dislikes.

That's the funniest part to me. Out of the two of us only we were in real physical danger. Out of the two of us only we came away with injuries. We left her with Charlotte and green Doritos a 'sub-optimal' choice (sure we could have melted the ice faster but we didn't leave her completely alone).

She's mad because we put the mission first. Given the last time we let some punk bitch saunter away she came back with allies and kidnapped us it's actually a reasonable reaction.

>>37719805
Jessica got hit hard by Irene and one-shot her.
Jessica got hit hard twice by Mina and insta-disabled her.
She got chased by us, fought us, LOST, summoned a shield weakened the ground and ESCAPED into an underground sewer without help, rest, or guidance.
I think REMOVE was worthless and it is kind of insane we are actually thinking of facing her again at all let alone minus a team member.
>>
>>37719886
I too am kind of annoyed by how often antagonists escape without a scratch in this quest, but if archelon said the fight could be won and Jessica caught/killed by us I'm going to assume he's telling the truth.

>it's actually a reasonable reaction
It was a matter of immediate danger (Mina dying) vs long term danger (Jessica coming back more dangerous than before). I think that saving Mina should have taken priority no matter how infuriating it is to let yet another bad guy get away, but I didn't vote for this decision and I'm not entirely sure I wouldn't have gone with the majority if I did. I really dislike the idea of her getting away and it could have maybe influenced me enough to vote to go after her.
>>
>>37719924
>It was a matter of immediate danger (Mina dying) vs long term danger (Jessica coming back more dangerous than before).

I disagree. When I read the choices

>chase after her
>help mina
>[REMOVE]

I see help as just that:help. It wasn't rescue Mina. Not SAVE Mina. It was lowercase help. Much less emotional intensity than [REMOVE].
>>
>>37719963
Mina was in a block of ice with her only protection being an armor of unknown effectiveness when it comes to protection against the cold, and Archibald was busy crying over his wounded waifu. It wasn't difficult to understand that the situation was critical.
>>
>>37720015
True but that circles back to my original claim the choices are disingenuous. The only reason 95% of people would choose something besides helping her is that a single sentence

>She... she's frozen. All of her. In a huge sheet of ice.

before a very important choice doesn't properly convey more than a simple disabled status effect. The added realism of hypothermia and breathing considerations are added after the fact but the realism of mission first and threat elimination are left by the wayside.
>>
>>37720056
That's one of the problem, when I see sheet I think of a hastily constructed relatively thin obstacle that Mina would be able to get out of. If it were a block of ice, I would have chosen to stay and help.
>>
>>37718186

Perhaps training wheels isn't really the right way to think of it?

I like your combat system, in fact I may just steal it outright for future questlike roleplaying things I do. That system works! But in that system, you have to make three obvious screwups to arrive at a universally bad result.

So why is it that everywhere outside of direct combat, a single bad choice can lead to so much pain and moping? Shouldn't it be the other way around, since combat sequences are risky and climactic? Especially in a quest system where a good portion of the readerbase isn't here for every choice, or even every thread?

Not letting people fuck up horribly with one or two poor choices isn't "training wheels" and doesn't make the quest less interesting. Rather, I'd say that allowing that in the first place is a bad thing, and leads to what we're seeing here. The fun is in how we get to the end, not if.
>>
>>37720235
It's DXR's combat system. Be sure to give credits where it is due.

>>
>>37720846
Joy so we have shitposters and REJOICEr's, bombing this quest now. Given the fact we make shit decisions and refuse to admit they're wrong or lean from them. This very well might kill the quest. Which is a shame considering this is Arch's last.
>>
>>37720875
At least not all anon who follow this quest are asshats. Just most of them.
Hope next thread goes better than this one.
>>
>>37720910
Doubtful, the shit slinging has been increasing exponentially. Hell it's starting to approach PGQ waifu war levels. Considering most of the people left are REJOICE'tards who want cecille to die, or autists who insist on playing Cecille like a retard. I'm pretty sure it won't get better. Doesn't help reasonable people are dropping it due to aforementioned things.
>>
>>37720910
Nah there like one or two of these fuckers samefagging.

Unfortunately I can't say the same for the CC did nothing wrong cancer.
>>
>>37720965
PGQ reached some really low points in Marconetti and it managed to get back on track, I don't see why FDQ can't do the same.
>>
>>37720990
PGQ was mostly unintentional, this isn't. WAifu faggotry is different from REJOICING. Plus Arch is a lot closer to burning out now than he was then. Can take a lot out of you when people intentionally try to shit things up and are unrepentant about it.
>>
>>37720980
CC have done plenty wrong, but there's no reason to dwell on it. Makeing amends and moving on should be the next course of action.
>>
>>37721019
Are you implying waifufags weren't intentionally trying to sabotage the routes they didn't like?
>>
>>37721032
They were, but they weren't trying to kill the game. One is accidental and marginally more acceptable. Plus it burns out arch less as it shows we like the world and characters rather than saying naw I'm going to fuck up for the lulz, screw your world.
>>
>>37721057
Ok, I see what you mean.
>>
Pity about the thread, surprised people are still arguing about Theresa's book from the lie-detector angle though. Personally I don't think we did the wrong thing at all due to the simple fact she bought it online meaning at any time the sellers and/or anyone capable knowing it got sold on the net could trace it to her without the slightest issue. Which is still an issue we should bring up with her, by the way, since someone could come a-knocking any day.
>>
>>37721224
For what it matters, I'm of the opinion that Cecile's fuckups are of the "somewhat understandable, but hardly excusable" variety in-universe. Telling Charlotte about the book might still prevent some Bad Things down the line, but at this point it's done so much damage that it most certainly wasn't worth the drama.

In the end it's us Anons who should conclude that we did plenty wrong. But I don't know how to correct it so I'm not sure that that realization would matter now.
>>
>>37719405
This.

I only read the Book shit-storm in the archives and I still think getting the book away from Theresa was the right thing to do.

Ditching Mina when she was frozen was incredibly stupid though. At the time, I didn't think it might have come back to bite us quite this hard (not that I think the punishment has been unreasonable, but I wasn't really thinking about the long term outcomes in the heat of the moment) but even so, voting to save our friend seemed like such an obvious choice, I was sort of stunned when it lost out.
>>
>>37719924
>I too am kind of annoyed by how often antagonists escape without a scratch in this quest
That was starting to annoy me earlier on in the quest (though it was more on the side of players letting them get away than Arch protecting them). Then we got kidnapped and turned a bunch of dudes into either mincemeat or crispy bacon and my faith was restored tenfold.
>>
>>37721890
I wasn't really surprised when it lost. With how much anons love crying out for [REMOVE] at any given chance, actually being allowed to do it is like a golden opportunity. They just can't pass it up no matter how dumb an idea it is.
>>
>Charlotte becomes the love interest
FUCKING ARCHELON WHY DID YOU RAILROAD US SO HARD. GODDAMN IT

>Cecile makes a decision that's not the most optimal one
FUCKING ARCHELON WHY DIDN'T YOU RAILROAD US? NOW WE'RE STUCK WITH THE CONSEQUENCES.

How about we focus on killing the fuck out of Jessica and just focus on Mina right now.

What Theresa is more butthurt about isn't the fact that we told Char about the book but the fact that we chose Char over her in every single aspect. She's not just mad about the book but she's a woman scorned, she's not going to be easy to fix at all.

For Mina we need to explain the nature of Overshine and why it took over. We were shocked, and was mentally weak at the time so it took the opportunity to assume control. Charlotte can also help explain the nature of the alternate personalities and that might help smooth things over.
>>
>>37722029
All [REMOVE] votes after the very first one have been retarded

It's explicitly the book part that she's butthurt about.

>

Problem is Mina has a her own branch personality and treats her very carefully so she'd consider us weak for giving in.

Again, that's what archelon said.
>>
>>37722029
But there was a vote immediately before the one [REMOVE]™ won that also included [REMOVE]™ and it lost.

That was before Mina was even in immediate danger...
I wouldn't be half as annoyed with [REMOVE]™-friends if they at least had a sense of timing.

Not him but I can't believe Theresa outrage wasn't at least partially fueled by her losing the CC-Bowl.

It's been said before but if it was Mina giving Theresa's her book to the Tree of Life, rather than Cecile giving up her book to Fancy-Dress-Werewolf-Bitch-WhatdoesshehavethatIdon't?!? she wouldn't be nearly as upset.

No, the book was the last straw. Did you forget that Theresa was already pretty jealous of Char? That we would choose to hang with Char over her?

If it was just the book and nothing else it wouldn't make sense.
