It’s the morning following your rest near the edge of the forest, though it’s difficult to tell with how overcast the sky is. Today’s travel towards the village of Laverre will take you through the northern swamps. There aren’t very dedicated trails leading towards the town from this direction, but you’ll have to make due.

The weather already isn’t doing you many favors. Fog and mist seem to permeate the marsh, and the sky occasionally bursts out pockets of rain. Fortunately, most of the monsters in the area that you notice are those that would rather disguise themselves or run rather than confront you directly. While a few attempt to hide in your path to ambush you, a simple adjustment of course is enough to get them to give up on their trap.

While your walk was peaceful, it was also a bit difficult simply because of the terrain. You try and take your mind off it though.

"So, are you enjoying the trip so far?" you ask Lisa as the two of you stomp through the moist ground.

"Yep," she giggles, "You sure know how to show a girl a good time Ceil."

"Well, what can I say?" you reply, "I know how to pick them."

"Well, it might not be perfect," Lisa smiles, "But I've got you here, and that's enough."

The two of you chat for most of the day, poking fun at the miserable conditions you found yourselves marching through. After a while, you're hardly even bothered by the mud and the muck, and before you know it, you've arrived at your destination by late afternoon.

The village itself is rather small, only a dozen or so buildings are arranged around a large tree in a central square. There isn't a clear line where the swamp ends either, with ponds, rivers, and trees encroaching upon the town on all sides. You realize that you're not even sure if this town had a real inn or not. It's also rather quiet, and apart from the occasional thump from someone chopping wood nearby, you don't see a real sign of anyone.

You follow the continuous thwacking of wood towards the south side of the village, eventually spotting a large man cutting wood by the side of one of the smaller houses, though it does have a rather large shed next to it.

After a few swings he seems to notice you standing nearby, and the grip on his wood axe tightens.

"Who're you lot?" he asks, eying you and your monsters up and down, "Haven't seen you around 'ere before."

"I'm Ceil," you begin, "And this is Lisa. We're travelers from Coumarine city."

He glares at you for a moment more before eventually loosening the grip on his axe and sitting down on a nearby stump.

"Well, it's nice to meet ya," the man continues, "The name's William. William Cooper."

"Do you know if there's anywhere in town we could get some food and supplies?" you begin, "It'd be good to get some fresh food again."

"Well, there's always Sanders," the man replies, "He runs somethin' of a bar during his off hours, and he's got stew too. If you want something for the trail though, you'll want to talk with Pierce. He should 'ave that sort of fare. You'll probably find him drinkin' at Sander's place though."

"He drinks in the middle of the afternoon?" Lisa exclaims.

"Well, yeah. Can't say I blame him, what with what 'appened."

"What did happen?" you ask, "Does it have anything with why this place is so deserted?"

"I suppose I oughta give you the full story," he begins, "It started a couple weeks back, when John, local trapper, didn't come back from one of his 'unting trips in the woods. His daughter was real worried, but we managed to convince her to wait a day for him to come back. After he didn't, a few of us looked around the woods, searchin' for him."

"What happened?"

"Turns out he got caught on one of his own traps, bled out before we even got there. We did the proper thing and took him back to town to bury 'im, but Jenna, that's 'is daughter, didn't take it very well. No kid deserves that sort of thing. Before we could figure out what to do with her though, she disappeared a few days later. We tried searchin' for her too, but didn't have any luck. Then just this past week Sander's daughter up and vanishes in the afternoon. Then the Wilson's kid a few days after that. Nobody 'ardly goes outside anymore, worried that somethin'll happen to 'em."

A few more moments pass as you consider how to respond, but you're not sure what to say. Instead, you decide to change topics.

You decide to head to the bar for now to get something to eat. It's near the south side of town, so it's not a very far walk.

After you enter, you see a handful of tables, mostly pushed aside to the corner, as well as a rather long one with a few kegs underneath, which you assume is the bar. On the other side of the building is a kitchen area, partially walled off, with a few blankets hung up to help divide the two spaces.

You can spy two men drinking at the bar itself, and one behind it, probably Sanders. You think one of the two men is Pierce, though you don't know about the other. Lisa heads over and sits down at one of the tables, while you order some stew.

After a minute of waiting, a young girl comes to your table carrying a bowl of stew, setting it down carefully before rushing back to the kitchen and bringing another. Seems it takes her multiple trips to get the food out, but you thank her regardless and begin eating. It's very warm, which is nice after the day's travel through the water and muck. It seems to mostly have carrots in it, though you do notice the occasional bit of chicken or fish.

"So, what are your thoughts on what's happening?" you ask Lisa, careful to keep your voice down to avoid drawing attention.

"I'm not to sure," Lisa replies, "If it was just the trapper's daughter, I would assume she either ran away in grief, possibly being attacked by something nearby. It's the other two that are confusing. Mr. Cooper said that one of them vanished during the middle of the day, so unless she had a reason for running, something would have had to get them into the forest without anyone noticing. Not many things can pull that off."

"I think I've got an idea," you begin, "I'll talk with Pierce about getting supplies, and ask for some details on what happened to his daughter. Meanwhile, you look around in the woods on the edge of town for any trails the trapper may have used. Use Pidgeotto to look out from above. Riolu, you try using your aura vision to see if you can't spot anything out of the ordinary."

Lisa and Riolu nod in response, and the three of you set to your tasks, with you heading over to the bar to speak with Pierce.

"Excuse me, I'm looking for someone named Pierce?" you ask, the man on the left turning towards you.

"Whadya want, can't ya see I'm tryin' ta drink in peace?" he replies. You can already tell he's been at this for a while.

"My friend and I are traveling, and we stopped in this town to get supplies," you continue, "William told us you might have some we could buy."

"Huh?" he slurs, "Yeah I guess I do...should still be some in the storehouse. You can go see my wife. She'll give ya whatever."

"Thank you, but there was another thing. I was wondering if you could tell me about what happened to your daughter."

He stands up abruptly and turns to face you, a furious look in his eyes. You needed to think fast.

"I might be able to find something out." you start, raising your hands in a nonthreatening manner, "I'm a traveling aura user, my master told me to travel the country and hone my skills by helping people where I can. After what happened back home with the blockade and a couple close calls with wild monsters on the way here I'd rather not take any chances. The man ponders your words, slowly stumbling back into his chair before bursting into tiers.

"My Rose," he cries, "My cute little rose is gone!"

"Relax," you say, "Calm down. Can you tell me what happened?"

"I-I I was..." he stammers, "I was working in the smokehouse, but we were running out of firewood, so I gave her a bit of money to go fetch some more from William. It wasn't that far. She smiled and said she'd be back in no time. I wasn't too worried until she didn't show up for dinner, but when I went over to William's to check he hadn't seen her. We started looking around, but all we found was the handful of coins I gave her lying on the ground near the east side of town. It wasn't even on the way, and nobody remembers seeing her over there either."

He starts sobbing once more, clutching his face in his hands. You can't make out any of the words he's saying now, but you feel like you've gotten most of the details he has.

After thanking him for his time, you decide to go see how Lisa was faring. Heading outside the bar, you spot Frogadier napping on the roof. You glance around the trees nearby, but you don't spot Lisa. Maybe she was further in?

You move around the edge of town, carefully scanning the treeline. Eventually, you spot something. Its Lisa's Sentret, and it's scurrying right towards you. Once it reaches you, it props itself up on its tail and starts yipping while pointing towards the east side of town, and a pit starts to form in your stomach.

Scooping the small creature up under your arm, you rush to the east edge of town, blade in hand. You look across the trees as you arrive, looking for anything. Any sign at all of Lisa. You hear a bird cry from above, and look up to see Pidgeotto coming down to land on you, shaking its head simply.

This isn't happening. She can't be gone. How could anything sneak up on her?

Shaking your head, you calm yourself down. This wasn't the time to panic. You needed to think of the best way to help Lisa.

You head back to the bar, kicking the side of the building to wake Frogadier. It winks one eye open, though upon seeing the grim look on your face it immediately hops down to join you.

You glance around for Riolu and Shelgon, but don't see them anywhere. A quick glance with your aura vision reveals your fears are true, and that they're nowhere in town.

"No. No. No. Not them too," You curse to yourself. This was getting worse by the minute. You needed to do something about this. Now.

Heading back to the east edge of town, you take out your bottle of incense. You needed all the help you could get this time. Once you focus your aura, you start looking into the forest for any trace of Lisa or your other two monsters.

Fortunately, you pick up on something rather quickly, as there is a lingering in the air from where they seem to have entered the treeline. Mixed in with it though is an aura that looks somewhat similar to parts of Lisa's but much more dense. It might be what took them though, so that's what you'll be looking for.

You head into the marsh with Sentret in your pouch, Pidgeotto on your shoulder, and Frogadier following in the trees above. Your eyes were still closed, navigating only using your aura vision. The trail you follow takes many twists and turns, winding its way intricately through the trees and bushes. However, you follow it with ease, and soon enough you can spot what you're looking for. Lisa's aura is in a clearing just ahead of you, along with Riolu's, Shelgon's, as well as three other girls. Judging by their height, you'd estimate them to be around eight or nine. Maybe they're the missing daughters of the townsfolk. Also in the clearing you see a rather powerful version of the aura you saw earlier, which seems to be positioned rather closely to Lisa. Scattered around the clearing and in the trees are much smaller pinpricks of the same aura, about the size of your hand. There's at least two dozen of the things as well.

You blink your eyes open to get another look at the situation, spotting a few of the smaller creatures in the trees. They're small and rotund, like tiny pink birds.

The clearing itself is well secluded by rather thick trees on all sides. You can't make out many details of the figures inside of it, but from your earlier look you knew where they all were.

You motion towards Frogadier, then towards Riolu. He nods in understanding, jumping up into a tree for his approach. Meanwhile, you circle about towards the far corner where you saw Lisa earlier.

Luckily, there seems to be a narrow gap in the trees that you can easily fit through. Once you crawl your way in however, you find something quickly wrapping around your arm and sliding you forward across the soft grass into the middle of the clearing. You quickly sit up to take in your surroundings.

The three young girls in the other corner seem to be seated around a stump, using it as a table. They're all wearing rather fancy party dresses, and seem to be drinking tea, or at least pretending to do so. A few of the small birds are positioned near them.

Riolu and Shelgon are curled up napping a bit of a ways from you, and a few of the birds seem to be napping atop them as well.

Next, you turn to face Lisa and are very surprised at what you see. Lisa seems to be in something of a daze, as she doesn't really notice you. More importantly, she doesn't seem to notice that she isn't wearing anything. Indeed, the only things currently preserving her modesty are the small ribbon-like tendrils wrapped around her. The source of them is a small feline creature curled up in her lap. Upon catching its gaze, it smirks at you and waves one of its spare ribbons. At least now you know what flung you to the center of the clearing.

A few seconds later, you hear a snapping noise from above, and look up just in time to see Frogadier landing on top of you. Seems the branch he was on snapped. You quickly try to disentangle yourselves from the pile.

"My name is Ceil," you reply, "I noticed that my friend Lisa and a few of the other girls from the town nearby had gone missing, so I decided to search for them."

"Well, I can assure you," she laughs nervously, "That the people you're looking for certainly aren't here."

You glance around the room at the others. The two other girls seem to just have a sleepy look on their faces, while Lisa has an absentminded grin.

"Really?" you continue, "Because their descriptions perfectly match those gathered here."

"That's a really strange coincidence," she continues, "But I'm afraid its impossible. What were their descriptions anyway?"

"Well, if I remember correctly, it was three young girls," you reply, "One's name was Jenna, and the other was Rose. I didn't hear the name of the last one, though I believe they were the same age as you three."

"Aha!" she exclaims, "That's where your wrong. We of the Fae court are incredibly long lived, though we may not look it due to our magical youth. I wouldn't be surprised if I was older than you. Why, my mother is probably older than your puny human kingdom!"

"And what about all the monsters here?"

"They are the trusted guardians of the Fae court," she says, "The smaller ones look out for trouble and spread joy, and the larger one is the honorable protector of the queen herself."

As if to announce its presence, the small cat you saw earlier shifts its ribbons around, causing Lisa to burst out in a fit of giggles. You felt like it was purposefully trying to annoy you. You're not sure how much more of this you could take.

"If you really are Fae," you say, "Are you Seelie or Unseelie?"

"What?" she asks in confusion, "What are you-?

Taking advantage of the distraction, you swiftly draw your ghost sword from its sheathe and lunge back towards Lisa and the cat in her lap. The blade doesn't bite very deep, but it does succeed in forcing the creature to disentangle itself from Lisa. It quickly bounds over to Jenna, waving its ribbons menacingly.

Lisa doesn't seem to react too much. Her blank grin is replaced with the sleepy look of the other two, but she doesn't move at all, not even to cover herself.

"Y-y-you pervert!" Jenna cries, "How dare you look at my mom-my mother's body like that! Do you think you can get away with looking upon the Fae Queen like that?"

"Because she isn't!" you retort, "She's my girlfriend, and this entire tea party is a lie."

The small girl bunches up her fists, fuming in anger at you. After a moment she manages to calm herself enough in order to speak.

"If that's how you want it, I challenge you to a Fae Duel," she yells, "In honor of the Fae court and the Fae queen."

"A Fae Duel?" you ask, a bit perplexed.

"Yeah, it's really simple," she smiles, "You and I each have three monsters, and we have them fight one at a time. Whoever has all of theirs knocked out first wins! I came up with it myself."

You remember hearing about similar contests on normal dueling circuits, though usually those were only one on one.

"And why should I accept?"

"Because we're going to use it do decide who's right," she explains, "If I win, then you're banished from the Fae kingdom and can never return. If you win, then I guess I might listen to you."

This was a risk. You're fairly certain she would use Sylveon in the duel, and knocking it out would make it harder for her to back out on her end of the deal. On the other hand, you might be in big trouble if you actually lose.

"Alright, I accept" you say.

"Great! I assume you'll just be using those three?" she inquires while gesturing to Frogadier and Lisa's two other monsters.

You get the sneaking suspicion that even if you were to ask to use Riolu or Shelgon, she'd either refuse you outright, or accept if you could wake them up, which probably wouldn't work based on what you've seen so far.

"Yeah, that's right," you nod.

"Okay, as for me," she starts before whistling. Two of the smaller birds drift down from the trees and onto her outstretched hands.

"I'll be using this one first," she says, placing one her arms forward, "After you pick yours, we'll start!"

You gesture to Pidgetto and it gets the message, taking to the air.

"Alright!" Jenna shouts, "Let's go!"

The two monsters begin squaring off, though Pidgetto slowly begins picking up speed as it flies through the air. The smaller bird flits about, struggling to keep up with the much faster avian. Eventually it stops, and starts spewing a pink mist instead.

As Pidgetto comes in for an attack, it flies straight through the cloud, and you watch as it spins out of control. It crashes into the trees nearby and tumbles to the ground, stumbling as it stands back up.

The smaller bird peppers it with small flashes of pink light, which don't help Pidgetto get back on track. You try calling out to it though, and it manages to shake it off.

You weren't off to a great start.

Once Pidgeotto stands back up, the pink bird tries blowing more smoke in its direction.

"Pidgeotto, fan it away using your wings!"

Pidgeotto seems a bit startled by the sudden order, but complies anyway, flapping its wings towards the cloud. It digs into the ground with its talons, and it starts putting out a surprising amount of force, clearing out the mist and causing the smaller bird to start flailing around in the air.

"Now knock it down!"

Pidgeotto takes to the skies once again, looping around the smaller bird, keeping it off balance. Then it does a sharp climb before wheeling about, using the extra momentum from the dive to slam its beak into its foe, causing it to slam down against the forest floor. It lays there for a few moments before Jenna moves forward and scoops it up in her hands.

"I never said you could tell them what to do," she mumbles.

"You never said I couldn't," you reply.

She gestures to the next bird and it flies forward. Pidgeotto gets in position again, though you can tell its still hurting from the last fight.

"Go ahead Pidgeotto, finish it in one shot!" you say, deciding to keep him in.

"Uhm, do that noisy song thing!" Lenna manages to say.

To its credit, the smaller bird does start a series of high pitches chirps that cause your ears to start ringing. Pidgeotto gets the worst of it as it flies towards the smaller bird though. Still, it powers through, slamming its wings into the tiny creature, which causes it to bounce and ricochet off of the nearby branches.

Jenna scoops this one up once again, placing it next to the other on the tea table.

"Don't think you've won yet!" she calls out, the feline next to her waving its ribbons as it advances.

"Hold on," you interrupt, "Mind if I swap out one of my monsters?"

"Huh?" Jenna blinks, "Yeah, I guess that's fine. Sylveon's gonna have to beat 'em all up anyway."

You call Pidgeotto back to you, allowing him to rest on your shoulder. Instead, you send in Frogadier, who seems be all set to go.

Froagadier quickly unleashes a stream of bubbles towards Sylveon, but the cat is too fast, nimbly sidestepping most of them, but also popping a few with its ribbons for good measure. Then, it shoots out a spray of bright yellow stars.

The frog tries to leap out of the way towards the trees, but the stars somehow curve and strike him in the air. He manages to stand back up again, but looks much worse for wear.

"Use your speed! Get around it!" you call out. Frogadier does so quickly, leaping around the various trees and branches, occasionally sending out a stream of bubbles to heckle it. While it dodges the bubbles, Frogadier always moves before it can counterattack.

After it loses track of him, he leaps down to crash into it with a water pulse.

"Behind you!" Jenna calls out. Sylveon turns about quickly, but not quickly enough to avoid the worst of the blow. It almost looks like its on its last legs, but then it does something rather odd. It rushes forward and plants a kiss on top of Frogadier's head. You watch the frog stumble backwards, and its almost as though their conditions have been reversed. Sylveon seems to be doing fine, while Frogadier is barely standing.

It was a pretty good way to trip her up. It's the type of fact Ceil would know about but a little girl who's not actually Fae wouldn't know, so it's an easy way to confirm it for sure.

As for what happened to her, there will be more time to go into detail next time.
