We were now four weeks in to the building of our glorious colony, the past week had been largely uneventful, Sir Pickeringworth allowing us all to take a rest from the non-stop construction work. Several meetings were held over this time with the engineers, who were complaining about not having workshops, with the magitekniks, who were complaining about not having sufficient housing, and with the soldiers, who were perfectly content, tough bastards, gotta love'em.
Thanks to the hard labour of the peasants, we were now blessed with a constant supply of food, our fields would not need to be expanded for a while yet, until at least our population grew a little more.
Also over the week rumours began to surface of strange calls at night, and of movement seen near the treeline of the ridges of the valley. It quickly became apparent to myself and Sir Pickeringworth that our population was superstitious and idiotic in this regard! How wrong we would be proven! Regardless however, we determined that eventually something would have to be done about it, to clear the fears of the populace if nothing else.

Current Season: Spring (3/13)
Population: 72 Gnomish Soldiers (57M 15F), 244 Gnomish Peasants/Farmers (152M 92F), 53 Engineers (25M 28F), 50 Magitekniks (42F 8M), 100 Craftsmen (58M 42F), 1 Royalty (1M), 1 Recorder (1M)

Rolled 88 (1d100)

I would finish the houses. We don't want half finished houses with no boat.
>>
>>37667534
I never understood if those 20% were finished houses, just 20% of our ship's total material worth, or really 20% of a project like the farms.
>>
>>37667589
Confusing I suppose. The ship's entire interior will be gone once it reachs 0%, and any progress on Housing, Workshops, or the Town Hall after that will have to be made using raw materials.
The % for the housing, workshops, and town hall represents how much is built in terms of supporting the whole population.
100% housing would be enough for 100% of the current population, etc.
So take it as 20% of a project, and with each population update the % will lower again.

Anyway, we're starting now, I'll give a few minutes for any more votes.

At the dawn of the fifth week, Sir Pickeringworth wasted no time in getting progress to be made once more. In order to begin to quell the fears of the populace, he sent a scouting party up to the ridges that surrounded the valley, they were under strict orders not to enter the forest (that was for the military expedition), and instead were to simply look along the treeless edges of the valley. Publicly they reported that nothing was found, all the land was as undisturbed as the day it was made, however I happened to be present when they made their report to Sir Pickeringworth.
Sir Pickeringworth sat at his desk in his private quarters above the command deck of the ship, looking stoically out into the New World while I frantically scribbled figures into my notebook. Both he and I were startled at an urgent knock at the door, Pickeringworth immediately said "Come in." and in burst the head scout, out of breath and white faced.
With a smart salute, he began.
"Sir, upon arrival at the ridges we searched for any sign of habitation, or of observation, and Sir, you won't like this."
Out of his side-pouch he procured a cast of... a print. Some kind of hoof, but unlike any myself and the Admiral had ever seen. Sir Pickeringworth leaned over and stared for a few seconds, before calmly leaning back and saying.
"You are not to breath of word of this to anyone, promotions for everyone that took place in this scouting mission if you ensure that this isn't spread around, understood? You found nothing up there."
He said it with such dreadful simplicity that it didn't even dawn on me for several moments what he was suggesting. He was ordering the hiding of a potential threat from the populace! This was a betrayal of public trust! I was about to jump up and voice my opposition when I noticed his eyes on me. His piercing, fire filled look was all I needed to be cowed into submission. Meekly I recorded the session in my journal, and continued on.

After that frightening episode in his quarters, things went on as normal, the Admiral ordered further desconstruction of the ship into housing for the populace. I began to grow worried that we may not have enough materials for the workshops that would be necessary to get our mining movement started. The populace was happy however, more housing meant more land to live on.
(Ship -20% Housing +20%)

The people were growing restless as more and more sightings of strange bipedal beings occurred on the ridges, morale was low and the push for a military expedition to find whatever was up there was mounting.

Sir Pickeringworth announced that he would be leading an expedition into the wilds, to uncover whatever strange beast was causing all this panic among the populace. I was to be left in charge in his place, and the moment he left I set the engineers to bring down their workshops into the village below. It wasn't much, but it was a start, we could begin production of automatons now.

(That's a cool picture, pretty much what I had in mind)

The Admiral chose meself, nineteen of me mates, and three of the Magitekniks to go along with'im into the wilderness. We 'ad with us two muskets to a man, and a rapier each, with three spares. We 'ad enough food to get us through four days out there on our own. Two days in, two days back, eh? The Admiral was 'is usual cheery self when we set out, we 'ad been briefed on the hoofprints that 'ad been found on the ridge, none o' us really knew what was coming.
For the first day we trudged through the forest on the Eastern Ridge, stoppin' every now and again to make sure we was on the trail of those prints. I wish we 'adn't found what was at the end'o'them.

After a wee bit 'o though, Sir Pickeringworth decided that we ought to press forward as a group to follow these tracks, it'd be slower, yeah, but overall safer for all of us. Starting in the morning we pressed onwards, till eventually we found what looked like a well-beaten path. We followed it for a few hours, and then we started to 'ear the sounds. It was Cog damn scary mix of braying, snorting, stamping feet. Sir Pickeringworth 'imself, came with me and one 'o my mates to go check out the noises. It seems we were finally about to solve the mystery of 'oo the 'ell was watching us.
Sneaking forward ever so carefully, our boots enchanted by one 'o our Magitekniks to make less noise. Slowly, slowly we approached the chaotic din. Finally we reached what looked to be the edge 'o a clearing. We all looked at each other, and crept to the edge of the thicket.

My Cog, gimme a moment, I've gotta do'em justice. It was the most 'orrifying site I'd ever seen, two massive thing, bigger even than an Orcish Warlord stood upright, wearing primitive metal armour, locking their enormous, blood spattered horns. 'Round'em stood at least a few 'undred more just like'm, massive 'orns protruding from their 'eads, covered in fur with legs the size 'o tree stumps. I couldn't believe me eyes, I ain't seen nothin' like it at the time. The three of us crouched there, our jaws 'angin open as if we just saw the Great Engine stop belchin' out smoke. We watched the competition between the two 'o them for several more minutes, eventually it seems the larger 'o the two got the upper 'and, and it gored the other with it's massive, twisting 'orns.
The moment the one 'o them stuck the other through with 'is 'orns, causing the other's guts to spill out all over the ground, me and Pickeringworth's third companion gave a yelp and covered 'is eyes. All in a moment that big'un cracked the neck of the small'un and turned 'is eyes towards our 'iding spot. 'Is nostrils flaring. The rest of the crowd too turned towards us, and I don't think I ever felt as much fear as I did then.

I looked over at Sir Pickeringworth, readying myself for the order to run. But then I saw 'is eyes.
"Oh Cog" I thought.
Calmly, without even an ounce of 'esitation, the man 'imself stepped out of the thicket and confronted the beast that was at least four time bigger then 'im! 'E cheerfully looked up at the big bastard and said,
"Tally-Ho! You're a big one aren't you!"
I couldn't believe my ears! With a growl, the big'un narrowed his eyes suspiciously and leaned over, scraping his 'oof in the ground.

Sir Pickeringworth continued standing there, beaming, without a care in the world! 'E even motioned for us to come out. Not one to disobey, we both did, confusing the beast even more. The beast-thing kept it's 'orns lowered, and 'e sure as 'ell didn't look to be stopping for anyone. The beast was just a few meters away from goring the two 'o us flanking Sir Pickeringworth and crushing the man 'imself, when it bunched up it's legs and launched itself o'er us, the momentum carrying it into a tree, which it knocked down.
Sir Pickeringworth chuckled mightily indeed! What a blasted idiot. The beast thing looked us over and roared into the air, stomping over to us with extreme authority. Me and my buddy were petrified, but Sir Pickeringworth simply walked over and pronounced,
"How do you do?"

Sir Pickeringworth cleared his throat, and clearly enunciated to the beast.
"Well my good chap, it appears that we've enroached on land which doesn't happen to belong to us! And during what looks like an important ceremony on top of it! Our deepest apologies my friend."
The beast stared for a few more second before it's eyes widened. With a grunt and a few unintelligible snorts, of all things, it kneeled to us! As did the rest of the onlookers! At that point me and my friend were in such a state of shock, we began laughing! A cold look from Sir Pickeringworth shut us both up however, and it occured to us that this must be very trying on his nerves.

Sir Pickeringworth executes a formal bow and stays low. The beast's eyes widen in confusion and it bows even lower, it's horns scraping the ground.

This has got to be the most awkward meeting of races I've witnessed. Though they aren't stupid I think.

I wonder how long until their chieftain realizes Sir Pickeringworth is imitating him in an attempt to communicate. He's running on pure piss and vinegar at this point flying by the seat of his pants with this plan.

Why does my trip keep dropping. Halp

Stand up. Let the beast win the bowing match.

Phantom congrats you've completely put your players off guard with this. I think we're confused as the first settlers were meeting native americans the first time.

Talk about culture shock.

Sir Pickeringworth stood up then! The madman! These beasts are obviously a threat to us, why would 'e! Well, that was what I thought at the time, little did I know he had obviously made a connection.
The beast snorted in apparent satisfaction and stood up a few moments after Sir Pickeringworth, it reached out it's hand and motioned for the three of us to climb on. Sir Pickeringworth turned to the two of us.
"You, go back and bring the party along, tell them of what transpired and have them follow the hoofprints of these beasts. You, come with me."
I climbed onto the hand with him, as we were being lifted up, Pickeringworth turned and excitedly whispered to me,
"It seems to me they think we are Gods!"

I'd rather settle this diplomatically if we can. If we manage to not get into a war with them its one less thing to worry about. Plus they'd make great allies in a scuffle. nothing says meatshield like a giant slab of beef that runs over anything its pissed at.

An hour or so later, which likely would 'ave taken us several by foot (I worried for the rest of our party), myself and the Captain stood in an magnificent temple, examining carvings several times our size. The temple was obviously built to the size of the beast-men, but it was the engravings which truly confused us.
"My dear boy! Looking at the carvings, it seems at some point in the past one of our very own ships came by this land! And in fact seems to have made quite an impression on these beasts!"
I nodded, wide eyed, still staring at the carvings, they were uncanny, really, seen nothing so detailed and beautiful in my life... aye, it's a shame what happened to them....
Regardless though! Sir Pickeringworth soon stood in front of a large congregation of the beasts and gave a rousing speech that they surely didn't understand a word of (though they seemed suitably impressed), buying time for the rest of our party to arrive.
Upon their arrival, I overheard Pickeringworth talking to the Magitekniks about the potential of some sort of translation enchantment, evidentially they couldn't do it themselves, but reckoned that if they were back at the main colony, it would be easy enough. It was explained to us that this appeared to be a tribal society, though the beautiful temple hinted at potentially a much larger community than we could see.

Day 3/4
Expedition: 1 Royalty (1M), 20 Gnomish Soldiers (14M 6F), 3 Magitekniks (3F)
Weapons: 40 Muskets, 27 Rapiers

>Go back, but leave several soldiers and a Magiteknik there
>Leave entirely, not bringing any with us, and not leaving anyone behind

In other news probably only a couple updates left in me tonight, once this arc is over I'll do one or two more 'normal' turns and call it quits.

We could give them gifts like food and tools.

Well now this is getting interesting... I'm not sure what to do here even if we got over the big hurdle theres plenty of landmines to step on we don't know about I bet.

I'm not paranoid! I'm practical! THEY CAN LITERALLY STEP ON US MAN COME ON

I was sitting outside when it happened, it was a rather peaceful day, and soon enough, as usual, it would be shattered by Sir Pickeringworth. The first thing I felt was the ground shaking, but of course I shrugged it off as a minor earthquake. But it only grew stronger from there, and it seemed to be coming from behind me. I turned around and witnessed one of the most bizarre sights of my life. Sir Pickeringworth sat on the head of an enormous beast! He was holding onto it through it's fur, and several of his soldier compatriots hung onto it's horns! It was covered from head to hoof in a thick, heavy coat of fur, and it wore extremely primitive looking metallic armour. My jaw hanging open, Sir Pickeringworth spotted and waved to me, with a limp arm I waved back, he was a madman!

Soon after it was all explained to me, including Sir Pickeringworth's ballsy showdown with the beasts. I couldn't believe it. It was such a tale that would go down in legend I was sure (and it has! Today it is a popular folk tale in the colony!). Quite unsure what to do with these beasts, I spent several hours talking it over with my closest advisors. With beasts like this on our side, who knew what we could do? Then again, we weren't even quite sure they were on our side yet, our Magitekniks assured me that within the next week they would have a headpiece which we could use to translate, but until then we were flying blind.

Minotaur or Tauren is fine if it's agreed upon, but don't go thinking I have some pseudo-Gnomish language dreamt up, their culture is basically generic steampunk english.

Also I tried to make it clear from how I described them but the Gnomes have never seen bulls or cattle, they just don't have them, that's why I called them beast-men instead of bull-men.

Do we have any connection back home? Paying taxes, serving as a vassal, receiving support? Which regime is in control? Absolute monarchy or meritocracy?
>>
>>37671295
Heres one. Why the hell were we not informed of previous forays contacting these creatures and more importantly setting themselves up as godlike figures?!

Either someone likes secrets or theres even tech savvyier gnomes out there!

And how big do people think the boss' balls are now? He just stared down a minotaur and made it blink.
>>
>>37671343
For the moment your only goal is to expand the Empire, no taxes yet. However if something were to happen at home, or if you were to come across a large sum of wealth that the mainland hears about, that's a different story...

You are nominally a colony of the Gnomish Magitekrocy, which is an absolute monarchy. If you want a bit of lore on the ruling party, check out the "Royalty" section of the pastebin in the OP.

>>37671373
The Admiral's assumptions say that at some point in Gnomish history an undocumented vessel made it's way to the New World, they never made it back. Calls into question what happened to them eh?

(The Boss was already widely revered, and now with that story and riding into the colony on the head of a massive beast like that, phew)
>>
Thanks for the thread. Nice writing

Thanks for running. This little quest within a quest was fun.
>>
>>37671398
If this is any indication that lost vessel made landfall and left its mark on their history. We need to look into this post haste! Hopefully they left a good mark on the new world. While not a pressing concern in the face of survival its definitely a long term goal now!

Who knows what feats the created.
